Province announces pasture patron funding

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart have announced funding to help pasture patron groups prepare to assume operation of federal community pastures. “Returning these lands back to their provincial owners is a great opportunity for those, with a more direct stake in the use of the land, to take over the pasture management,” says Ritz. “Our government is pleased to work with the Province of Saskatchewan and use the flexibility of Growing Forward programming to support this transfer.” “Pasture patrons have

– operations change hands been the priority for our government throughout this transition,” Stewart said. “This funding will help patron groups with the business costs associated with assuming operation of these pastures and we will continue working hand-inhand with them throughout this process.” Funding will be available to patron groups for up to 75 per cent of the costs associated with establishing legal entities and the development of business plans, up to a maximum of $80,000. In addition, funding will be available for up to 75 per

cent of the costs for patrons to improve their business management skills, up to a maximum of $40,000. Pasture patron groups are eligible for a maximum benefit of up to $120,000 per group. Funding will be provided under the Saskatchewan Farm Business Development Initiative. Funding to help patrons establish business plans, form legal entities and access training was one of the recommendations made by the Pastures Advisory Committee. Continued on Page 2.

Liquor regulations see change

ONE FOR THE MONEY TWO FOR THE SHOW! – St. Michaels School’s first grade french immersion class has been in school for fifty days, so to celebrate they had a day all about the 1950s. The provincial government is modernizing Saskatchewan’s liquor regulations with a focus on reducing red tape and creating new opportunities and flexibility for businesses. “Saskatchewan has many liquor regulations that haven’t undergone a comprehensive review for decades,” Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Donna Harpauer comments. “Our government is pleased to make these changes today and remains committed to reviewing regulations on an ongoing basis.” Included in the more than 70 changes: salons, spas and movie theatres will be

In 2010, a government-wide review of red tape was initiated. The province’s alcohol regulations were the first to go through this process. The review of liquor regulations included feedback from stakeholders and a detailed review by Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA). Continued on Page 2.

The Committee is made up of industry leaders and was appointed to provide advice and recommendations to the provincial government regarding the transition of these pastures. “We are pleased the federal and provincial governments are providing this funding to assist patrons in developing their business plans,” Sas-

katchewan Stock Growers President Harold Martens adds. “We know this transition will require some business expertise and this funding will go a long way to helping ensure a smooth transition.” “We have heard from many pasture patrons who are looking to move forward with establishing a business model and this funding will assist them in that process,” SARM President David Marit

said. “We appreciate this funding and the support governments are providing to patrons.” For more information, patrons can contact their local Ministry of Agriculture Regional Services office, call 1-866-457-2377 or visit www.agriculture. gov.sk.ca. Funding for this program is being provided under the federal-provincial Growing Forward agreement.

In recognition of children’s rights and the incredible potential of our home-grown youth, the Government of Saskatchewan joined with the rest of Canada to celebrate National Child Day on November 20. National Child Day is celebrated in November of each year to mark the occasion when Canada adopted the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, outlining the basic human rights for children and youth. The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the Convention on November 20, 1989. As of September 2010, the Convention had been ratified by 193 countries, making it the most widely ratified human rights treaty.

Daily plans are put on hold by a storm

Ed, my neighbor next door, just had to say, “I told you that you should shovel driveways this winter for pay.” He was all smiles yesterday as he cleared the thirty centimeters of snowfall from his drive with his new snow-blower. After repeated times of shoveling during the weekend-long snowstorm, I was ready to talk to Ed about the cost of having him keep my sidewalk and driveway clear with his new snowblower. Pride and cheapness wouldn’t allow me to even think such thoughts for long. After one big snowfall, it is too early to throw in the snow shovel. However, I did find that this first big snowfall made me think in envy of bears which hibernate through the winter. It seems to me, hibernating is better than going south. When

will they come up with a pill that you take in November and you wake up in April thinner and ready to make your presence known again? I told Ed that he doesn’t understand the stress of needing to drive to work when the snow is falling and blowing and piling up in sneering drifts on the highway. He doesn’t need to worry about winter roads. Winter driving to work can make it seem like every storm day you face you are working a double shift, but only getting paid for one. Of course, Ed had no sympathy and accused me of always whining about something, which may have some truth to it. Jesus understood that many of us have a tendency to worry not only about wintry roads but any number of things. Jesus asked, “Who of

Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” Certainly, our lives are much more than work and our drive to and from work. The recent snowstorm that shut things down reminded me that even work schedules mean nothing to God. We go to work or school and come home, but only when God lets us. When a road is blocked with snow or a highway closed, our plans for going get put on hold. Bad weather stops us from going where we want, when we want,

and puts us on hold until conditions improve. It cramps our style. Sometimes, when we phone a business, we get put on hold. Waiting our turn for the next

available service representative can be frustrating. We tend to think that time belongs to us and no one should cut into our time. Every once in a while, God reminds us that time belongs to him and if it’s His time to snow, it may be our time to stay home. It is a stretch for us to allow God to have a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven. We may see a time of birth as too early or late, but it is

God’s time. Likewise, the time of death may not seem right to us; however, it isn’t our time, but God’s. We think that today and tomorrow are ours, but they belong to God. The Bible says it this way, “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city’ … Why you do not even know what will happen tomorrow… Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’”

“Connect” for addiction help The Ministry of Health is marking Saskatchewan Addictions Awareness Week (SAAW) with a reminder to residents that local addictions services are provided and accessible in every health region. “We want to increase public awareness about the risk of alcohol and drug use, and promote healthy lifestyles among all Saskatchewan people,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan says. “The theme of this year’s awareness week is ‘Connect for Help’. We encourage individuals to connect with available addictions services in your local communities if you are concerned about your own substance misuse, or are worried about your loved ones.” Earlier this fall, the Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre in Prince Albert opened its doors.

This 15-bed facility provides a six-week residential treatment program to Saskatchewan youth ages 12 to 17. In addition, an eightunit provincial family treatment facility in Prince Albert is anticipated to open early next year. This facility will primarily serve women with addictions who experience

difficulty in providing care to their young children. This inpatient program will provide child care on site, making it easier for residents to complete their treatment. For more information about addictions services available near you, visit www.health.gov.sk.ca/ addictions-awareness.
