Your chance to vote Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart is encouraging local wheat and barley producers to participate in the first-ever board elections for the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission and Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission. “Western Canadian wheat and barley producers have entered a new era with marketing freedom and these new commissions will help direct the future of their Industry/, Stewart says. “I encourage Saskatchewan producers to learn about the candidates and help elect boards of directors to build on this milestone opportunity for growth. The commissions were established by the Ministry of Agriculture in June 2013 following an extensive consultation process with producers. Check-offs administered by the
– new marketing options open up commissions will generate about $5 million annually for research, market development and promotion of wheat and barley. These crops represent about one-third of Saskatchewan’s total annual crop acres. Voter packages are being mailed to registered wheat and barley producers. Mail-in ballots must be received by the returning officer at Levy Central in Saskatoon by December sixth. The new boards are expected to take office during the commissions’ annual general meetings in January 2014. The commissions will play a valuable role in the future of the wheat and barley industries
and help to achieve the goals set out in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, including increasing crop production by 10 million tonnes, increasing agri-food exports by $5 billion, increasing value-added production and establishing Saskatchewan as a leader in biosciences. Further information can be found on the commission websites at www.saskwheatcommission.com and www.saskbarleycommission.com or by calling the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission office at 306-6537932 or the Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission office at 306653-7232.
Summer Jobs deadline changes WAX ON WAX OFF – In preparation for the upcoming season the Yorkton XC Ski club recently hosted a wax clinic for local ski enthusiasts. Above, Warren Popick hot waxes ski tips and tails, showing the application of glide wax to members of the local club. “Getting the true enjoyment out of each ski day starts with prepping your skies correctly, says Popick. “Glide and grip wax applied for the snow conditions and temps makes xc skiing either classic or skate simply a great experience and a complete full body workout. To have positive traction and incredible glide comes from knowing what to apply and when, from there it is skier skill level that brings it all to perfection. – Submitted by Anne Stupak
Deadlines have changed so if your plan is to hire a student this summer under the Summer Jobs program, you need to act soon. Garry Breitkreuz, Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville, is advising employers who plan to utilize the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program of an important deadline change for those applying for wage subsidies in 2014. The deadline for CSJ has changed and is earlier than in previous years. This year, applications will be available online beginning December 2, 2013, and must be submitted before January 10, 2014. Strong economy, balanced books
The province is crediting a diverse and growing economy for balanced books in 2013-14, with surpluses projected for both the General Revenue Fund (GRF) and Summary Financial Statements. “Balanced budgets are a key part of our government’s Plan for Growth,” Finance Minister Ken Krawetz comments. “Managing spending is an essential part of our commitment to fiscal responsibility. We’re confident the Saskatchewan economy is well positioned to continue to withstand some expected volatility in the natural resource sector over the remainder of this fiscal year.” The Mid-Year Report,
released today, projects the province will finish the year with a $22.8 million pre-transfer surplus in the GRF and $677.7 million in the Growth and Financial Security Fund. The Summary Financial Statements are projected to show a surplus of $467.0 million at year end, up $317.2 million from budget. Economic growth is now forecast to increase to 3.6 per cent in 2013, mainly due to record crop production. Saskatchewan continues to experience record population growth, has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation and leads the country in employment growth and growth in average weekly earnings.
Volatility in potash revenue was offset by increased oil revenue, resulting in a GRF revenue decrease of $33.9 million from budget. Expenses are forecast to be $8.1 million higher than budget. Disaster assistance spending as well as increased support for the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability program and other disability initiatives are the main areas of higher spending than projected at budget. Beyond those needed increases, the Mid-Year Report shows that most other ministries and agencies are holding the line or reducing costs, identifying $75.6 million in expense reductions.
Sask. Summer Jobs Program Con’t from Page 1.
These new timelines mean that successful employers will be notified sooner and have more time to recruit students. “Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) is an initiative that helps students gain the skills and experience they need to be successful, now and in the future, while earning money for the upcoming school year,” says Breitkreuz. “It also helps employers create much needed summer job opportunities for students, while strengthening local economies and communities across Canada.” Those eligible to apply for wage subsidies under CSJ funding include notfor-profit and public-sector employers and small private-sector employers. Private-sector employers must have 50 or
fewer full-time employees across Canada to be eligible. Full-time employees are those working 30 hours or more per week with the employer. Eligible students must be: • between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a fulltime basis in the next academic year; • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and, • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. A man’s best friend is not his dog, it’s his truck Ed, my neighbor next door, is determined that I should get a Ford pickup truck. He claims that since I’m preaching at the far ends of the province this winter, I need a truck or a dog sled. According to Ed, Neudorf, Springside, and Kamsack are all remote destinations in the winter. Mind you, Ed says that no one should leave Melville in the winter. He adds, “Get stuck and snowed in at home – don’t travel out of town for the aggravation you can get right here.” I learned quickly that Ed cannot see any harm in trash talk. He wants me to buy a Ford, but he knows I’m a GM fan. As soon as he saw my GM van when we moved next door to him, he told me right then that the only way to improve the appearance of a Chevy, is to park it between two Fords. He also had to inform me that GM stands for Glued Metal. I could have given back the trash talk that Ford stands for ‘Found On Road Dead,’ but I restrained myself. I did say to Ed that friends don’t let friends drive a Ford. This of course he totally ignored. Owning a pickup truck is the
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com ultimate experience of life according to Ed, even if, a person isn’t smart enough to drive a Ford. Ed is sure that a dog is considered man’s best friend only because not every man drives a pickup. If everyone drove pickup trucks, the dog would no longer be man’s best friend. Ruby, Ed’s wife, says she isn’t jealous of Ed’s affection for his truck or his dog, in fact, she often likes them best herself. She claims they can be a lot less trouble than Ed. Trash talk can become common place between rivals in sports, but there is a danger it can cross over the line to mockery and ridicule. This happens most when someone is
at a distinct disadvantage. People are quick to scoff at, criticize, mock and condemn those that appear as powerless prisoners. When Jesus was arrested, put on trial, and crucified everyone seemed get in on ridiculing him, and scoffing at him. His enemies scoffed at Jesus on the cross, “He saved others let him save himself if he is the Christ of God the Chosen One!” Even one of the two criminals, being crucified on a cross near Jesus, railed at Jesus saying, “Are you, not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” It is wise to hold our tongues when ‘trash talk’ is being leveled at another. The truth may seem to be obvious, but

we tend to see only one side of a person or situation. Yes, Jesus did save others, but he could not come down off the cross to save himself. He was on the cross as a divine sacrifice for the sins of mankind. Jesus prayed on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Thankfully, some recognized Jesus as being innocent. One of the criminals crucified with Jesus said, “This man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” Jesus replied to him, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.”
