REMEMBERING 9/11 – Different emergency service providers from throughout Yorkton, including Yorkton Fire Protective Services, Crestview Ambulance and the RCMP came together to remember their fallen comrades in 9/11 on the 11th anniversary of the event. “We’re all in the same line of work, we’re all out there because we like helping people and being there for them when they can’t help themselves, and when anything happens to any one of us it’s a family, it affects each and every one of us,” says Deputy Fire Chief Greg Litvanyi.
Community rinks in line for provincial funding grants There’s money up for grabs for local rinks. The Government of Saskatchewan has announced support for community rinks, many of which are vital hubs of year-round activity in their towns and cities.
From now until November 30, communities, non-profits, schools and rink boards can register their rinks for the $2,500 per ice surface grant which can be used to help fund operating costs and minor capital upgrades.
“The government understands that rinks are the centre of activity in many communities during the winter months,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty comments. “This grant will help ensure that our province’s
rinks continue to be well-operated and well-maintained. It is one of the ways our government is ensuring Saskatchewan people benefit from the opportunities generated by our growing province.” The Government of Sas-
katchewan is committing $1.9 million to the grant program. The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association will administer and deliver the grant. Continued on Page 3.

City forges ahead with land plan – annexation deal finalized By SHANNON DEVEAU N-R Writer It’s been a little over a two year process but an annexation deal between the City of Yorkton and the RM of Orkney has been approved meaning council can go ahead with development plans in and around the area of the airport. The city officially received approval from the Saskatchewan Municipal Board late last week and as such takes over full responsibility of land that while city owned, was previously governed by the RM of Orkney. It’s a fair deal says Mayor James Wilson, adding the only sad part is, it took so long to reach an agreement “We’re pleased ” he says “that

GROWING FORWARD – A special sod turning ceremony was held recently to celebrate the addition of three new relocatable classrooms at Canora Junior Elementary School (CJES). Construction is set to begin on September 17 and is a sign of the population growth that Canora and area is seeing now and into the future. The Town of Canora was represented by Mayor Terry Dennis who helped in celebrating a major addition to the elementary school where community members are strong partners in education. It was also Grandparent’s Day at the school where many past staff members and students of the school were in attendance to share a special day with their grandchildren – the current students of CJES. After brief presentations by GSSD Vice-Chair Bryan Cottenie and MLA Ken Krawetz, the sod turning ceremony took place followed by a puzzle piece project in each classroom and a hot dog lunch. The warm, sunny day set a perfect scenario for a very special day! It’s back to school time – part two In Part One, I discussed ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) symptoms and possible causes. ADHD symptoms include the inability to sit still and to concentrate properly, thus creating problems at school. Many dynamics may cause or aggravate ADHD symptoms. Genetics may cause susceptibility, but several other issues may worsen the situation. Childhood vaccinations, fluoridated water, exposure to environmental toxins and allergies may cause problems. In the diet, food additives, such as artificial flavours, colors, preservatives and sweeteners, may also compound the symptoms. Processed food additives are especially harmful when combined with sugars. Furthermore, many who suffer from ADHD have sensitivities to grains, especially wheat. CLEANSE Fortunately, there are natural ways to relieve ADHD symptoms. Firstly, toxins from vaccinations or other drugs may have produced symptoms. In
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION by Dr. Gail Smolinski DNM® www.drgail.ca this case, temporarily taking an appropriate homeopathic remedy may help the body to clear these toxins. Secondly, minimizing a child’s exposure to environmental toxins in the air, water and food can really help him improve. Since children have smaller bodies than adults, they cannot tolerate as much toxic build-up as adults. Whatever causes a sensitive or allergic reaction for the child should be removed from his life, whenever possible. NOURISH Proper nourishment is a must. Avoid white flour, white pasta, commercial juices and all processed foods. Avoid all stimulants – coffee, tea, chocolate, sugar and desserts. It is very important to remove
Community rink grant Con’t from Page 1.
“The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association is excited to be part of this grant program,” Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association Board President Darrell Lessmeister adds. “Our organization is confident that these funds will help improve community rinks across the province. It will support opportunities for people in urban, rural and remote locations, to participate in winter sports and recreational activities.” To register complete the online form on Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association’s website at: www.spra.sk.ca/Grant.

artificial colors, flavours, sweeteners and preservatives from the diet. According to Dr. Donald J. Brown, a naturopath at Bastyr University, a whole foods diet, high in complex carbohydrates, is best for children with attention deficit disorders. A food plan that is abundant in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains (except wheat) is usually best. BALANCE Many people have nutritional deficiencies, children included. Symptoms are the language our bodies use to warn us of problems and of the need to make lifestyle and dietary changes.
For example, the inability to remember dreams may point to a vitamin B6 deficiency. Rough bumps on the back of the upper arms often results from a lack of Vitamin A. White spots on fingernails could reveal a shortage of zinc. Did you know that Yellow Dye #5 can cause zinc loss? Bedwetting in children over 5 or cravings for chocolate may signify a magnesium deficiency. Ticklish individuals who are sensitive to their environments may be low in magnesium and possibly calcium. Muscle cramps and trouble relaxing or going to sleep may also indicate low mineral levels. A history of eczema or dry, scaly skin often means a person is lacking essential fatty acids, which are very important for healthy brain function. As you can see, the list of possible food-related symptoms is lengthy. For many reasons, our foods are often deficient in nutrients to begin with, even when we eat a
healthy diet. Furthermore, the absorption of nutrients depends on a healthy digestive system. Many people cannot absorb their nutrients properly. You need not worry about individual nutrient deficiencies, though. Fortunately, there is an easy, effective and tasty approach that can help us all balance our nutritional needs. I am talking about supplementing with Sunrider food-grade herbs which contain a broad range of nutrients that nourish our cells and organs.

“Don’t sweat it!”
Ed, my neighbor next door, had a kind word for me the other day. I almost fainted, but I suspect it was a slip of his tongue and won’t happen again. I mentioned to Ed that I had been grouchy at work with a friend and a couple of other people. Sometimes I get snappy and cranky and let loose my anger on others. “I don’t want to be an old porcupine throwing barbs of anger around!” I told Ed. “Don’t sweat it,” Ed said. “There are worse things than cranky words. Sometimes a little anger is honest and needed. Truth can get focused in anger.” Then he continued, “I’d rather deal with honest anger than dishonest flattery. It is better to be openly cranky with another person than to be quiet around them yet resentful and slanderous about them behind their backs. At least with you, people know if you have a grievance with them, as you’ll tell them with your crankiness.” Some people seem so calm and focused no matter what is happening. Some of the rest of us can become like a tree bent out of shape by a strong wind. We can be found boiling over in frustration or sputtering out in anger. Some can easily let things go and some of us won’t leave a troubling situation alone. All of us tend
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com to agree that self-control is needed, but some of us cannot hang onto ours. I have noticed that when I get angry, it is like I’m not in my right mind. The Bible speaks of Jesus coming to the region of Gerasenes and a man came out from the tombs to meet him. The Bible describes the man this way, “This man lived in the tombs and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. He had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.” One might say that he was out of control all the time and suffering greatly for it. People described him as having an evil spirit or being out of his right mind. Crankiness, anger, jealousy, hatred, lust, greed, drunkenness, selfish ambition and envy can
spin us out of control. These things are part of our sinful nature and ever seek to get the upper hand in our lives. They are part of us naturally, but they are self-destruction buttons that promise much, but are no less than deadly poison aimed at self-destructing us. No one could bind the man who met Jesus from the tombs. There is no subduing our sinful nature by our own efforts. There is no difference we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. Yet, like the man from the tombs, there is hope for us. Jesus cured the man who was out of control and restored him to his right mind. When the people of the area saw the man healed and in his right mind they were afraid of Jesus. Yet, he came among us to heal the sick in body and soul and mind. When we go to meet Jesus as those not right in our anger, greed, selfish ambition etc.; He offers us acceptance and healing. We are the ones who need it.

6 STEPS TO SUCCESS A concrete driveway represents an investment that is designed to last a lifetime, provided proper procedures are followed. The average homeowner will not normally be able to install a concrete driveway without expert assistance. It is strongly recommended that a qualified contractor be engaged to ensure a satisfactory job. To provide a quality driveway, the following guidelines should be carefully observed. (Concrete should be placed between April and September. If placed outside this time frame, additional precautions will be necessary.) 1. DETERMINE THE REQUIRED THICKNESS (MINIMUM) a) For cars and pick-ups 100 mm b) For light trucks 125 mm c) For occasional heavier trucks 150 mm (placed on competent subgrade) 2. SITE PREPARATION Concrete can be placed directly on uniform subgrade after removing the topsoil, or on deteriorated asphalt pavement. Excavate or bring to grade as necessary using granular ‘A’ as leveling course (typically 100 mm). a) Make sure subgrade is uniform, well compacted and contains no frozen material. b) Slope away from buildings at 2%. c) Install isolation joints using asphalt impregnated board strips (see Figure 1). d) To form driveway, use stiff wood forms kept in position with stakes not more than 1 metre apart. Top of stakes should be flush with, or slightly below the top of form at finished grade [see screeding – section 4(e)]. e) Plan exact position of concrete joints [see part 6] before starting the project and mark the locations on the formwork prior to concrete placement. DO NOT ALLOW power floats or trowels to be used. Overworking the fresh concrete causes scaling. This extra finishing is not required and will reduce the durability of the slab.

3. PLAN YOUR REQUIREMENTS FOR LABOUR AND MATERIAL a) Concrete: Class C-2; 32 MPa; 0.45 w/ cm ratio; 5%-8% air entrainment; 100 mm slump (maximum), for all exterior slabs on grade as required by CAN/CSA-A23.1 & OBC using quality proven aggregate. 48 hours advance notice of delivery should be provided. b) For coloured concrete, it is recommended that the colour be integrally mixed with the concrete at the time of batching. Air entrainment (5%-8%) must be measured after the colour has been mixed in. c) Make sure adequate labour is on hand when concrete will be delivered – normally a minimum of 3 persons, but more for larger jobs or when placing on hot, dry days. d) Check list of tools and materials needed: • large roll of plastic sheeting (protection from rain) • wheelbarrows and shovels • water supply for curing and wetting subgrade • long handled bullfloat about 120 mm wide minimum (preferably wood or magnesium for air entrained concrete) • straight rigid board for screeding • vapour retardant concrete broom for texturing • curing materials (burlap and water or chemical curing compounds).
Yorkton Concrete 2012 is the ONLY local supplier of redimix concrete that supports LOCAL groups and organizations. We appreciate your support of local businesses!
782.3582 or 641.5559
4. ORDER AND PLACE CONCRETE a) Dampen the subgrade without leaving freestanding water. Oil the forms before placing concrete. b) A 100 mm slump is adequate for placement. Adding water to increase the slump or workability has a very detrimental effect on both strength and durability of the concrete. c) Distribute concrete using wheelbarrows (or directly from concrete mixer truck if possible); use shovels to bring to rough grade avoiding segregation. d) Strike off the concrete to finish grade by using a straight board on edge between the forms – use “sawingâ€? motion. Tap forms to consolidate the concrete. e) Screeding: Smooth the surface using the long handled bullfloat (use edging tool to finish edges) – DO NOT USE STEEL TROWELS. f) For final non-slip finish use a concrete broom, burlap drag, magnesium float or impressed mat finish. g) IF PLACING ON A HOT, DRY OR WINDY DAY, TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS • protect fresh concrete from rapid moisture loss by covering with plastic after screeding to keep surface moist, or use wind screens, fog nozzles, vapour retardants, etc. • be prepared for fast setting during warm weather • protect hardening concrete by curing concrete immediately after final finish h) During cold weather, longer time is required before performing final finish. Do not perform final finish while concrete is still bleeding. NOTE: Improper procedures can result in a poor quality job. 5. CURING AND SEALING a) For proper curing, moisture must be retained in the slab for an extended period. Curing must start immediately following final finish and is accomplished by using: (i) curing membranes/compounds, which can be easily rolled or sprayed on as soon as the finishing operations are complete. MAKE SURE THAT THE MANUFACTURERS’ RECOMMENDED DOSAGE AND COVERAGE IS OBSERVED. OR (ii) wet burlap, soaking hoses, waterproof paper or polyethylene film to keep the surface CONSTANTLY wet for 7 days. Do not place hoses on surface. b) DO NOT APPLY DE-ICERS (e.g. SALT) UNTIL THE CONCRETE HAS GONE THROUGH ITS FIRST WINTER. DO NOT USE AMMONIUM BASED DE-ICERS AT ANY TIME. c) If the concrete is placed in the late part of the year below 5°C, use polyethylene film or other cold weather curing methods. An air drying period of one month after the curing period is required before de-icing salts can be applied. A PENETRATING SEALER can be applied as caution against chloride penetration. d) Under normal conditions the concrete may be sealed with a PENETRATING SEALER according to the recommendations of the manufacturer: (i) after 30 days if a curing membrane has been used (ii) after a period of air drying if water-cured. 6. CONTROL JOINTS As concrete ages initially, it shrinks because of water evaporation and cooling of the concrete. CRACKS will occur at random locations unless they are controlled in a pre-determined manner. a) Control joints (preferably sawn) shall be: (i) cut as soon as possible without pulling the aggregate out, usually within 4 to 12 hours after concrete has been placed (can be much longer in cold weather). (ii) cut 1/4 the thickness of the slab – this is the minimum depth. (iii) not more than 3 m apart for 100 mm thick slab, 4 m apart for 125 mm slabs, and 4.5 m apart for 150 mm or thicker slabs. (iv) control joints should be cut in a square pattern.
Reminder to Home owners Make sure you seal your concrete before the first freeze up!

God Grant You Many Years on the celebration of your 25th Anniversary.
St. Mark the Evangelist Orthodox Church It was on August 30, 1987 that Saint Mark the Evangelist Orthodox Church began as a mission at the Godfrey Dean Cultural Arts Centre in Yorkton. This provided a place for the city of Yorkton and the surrounding areas to be greatly blessed with services completely in English, including the Divine Liturgy, which, with God’s blessing, continue to this day. There was a desire to be able to experience and live the faith as handled down from Jesus Christ through the apostles. The doors were opened for those raised in the Orthodox faith and for those who were looking to experience the fullness and richness of the Christian faith regardless of their background. The parish of Saint Mark reflects a broad range of cultural heritages and diversity from this outreach becoming a community united as one in Christ. It was with this vision that Nickolas and Evelyn Kozmeniuk were instrumental in organizing the beginning of the mission. Under the guidance of Father Alexander (Dennis) Pihach from Saskatoon as the first full time priest the mission began to see growth as a church. It wasn’t long before the church needed more space to worship that Saint Mark began to use Saints Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church’s building in 1990. We continue to have an unique mutually beneficial relationship as congregations; together, yet separate. Come and join us at 160 Betts Ave.
