Local resident honored with Queen’s
Forty-one individuals from across Saskatchewan – including one from Yorkton, were honored recently with a special award. Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield and Education Minister Russ Marchuk presented 41 Saskatchewan residents with the
Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal at Government House in Regina. Yorkton’s Bryan Mierau was among the recipients. “The Queen has chosen the theme of service for this milestone year, and so it is most appropriate that Canada created a Diamond Jubilee Medal,
which celebrates both Her Majesty’s lifetime of service and the outstanding contributions of deserving citizens,” Solomon Schofield said. “On behalf of our sovereign, I thank each medal recipient for their commitment to the greater good.” The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee began in February 2012, in

celebration of the 60 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Canadian Mint created 60,000 medals, which will be awarded to outstanding Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life, across the country. “Today, we pay tribute to individuals from our province
who, like Her Majesty, truly exemplify the ideal of service to others through their actions,” Marchuk adds. “By honouring them here today, we also honour what is best about Saskatchewan.” For more information on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medvisit: www.jubileesk.ca.
Gaming grants give back – Yorkton groups get $98,408
The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) has announced it is providing approximately $2.1 million in charitable gaming grants to more than 1,000 volunteer groups and organizations across the province. “These grants recognize the efforts of Saskatchewan volunteers by providing them with additional funding to further support the important programs and services their groups and organizations provide,” Minister responsible for SLGA Donna Harpauer comments. “These volunteers enhance the lives of people in our communities and that work is appreciated.” Among the grants provided by SLGA this quarter: Yorkton and surrounding area received $98,408; Humboldt and surrounding area: $90,959; North Battleford and surrounding area: $81,847; Moose Jaw and surrounding area: $77,397 and Swift Current and surrounding area: $67,284. The charitable gaming grant program provides a grant equal to 25 per cent of the net revenues raised through charitable gaming activities including licensed bingos, raffles, breakopen tickets, Texas Hold’em poker and Monte Carlo events. Groups that conduct licensed charitable gaming activities and events do not have to apply for the charitable gaming grant. Charitable gaming reports submitted by the groups are used by SLGA to calculate grants and paid out each quarter.

City forges ahead with land plan – annexation deal finalized By SHANNON DEVEAU N-R Writer It’s been a little over a two year process but an annexation deal between the City of Yorkton and the RM of Orkney has been approved meaning council can go ahead with development plans in and around the area of the airport. The city officially received approval from the Saskatchewan Municipal Board late last week and as such takes over full responsibility of land that while city owned, was previously governed by the RM of Orkney. It’s a fair deal says Mayor James Wilson, adding the only sad part is, it took so long to reach an agreement “We’re pleased ” he says “that

October 1-7 is Breastfeeding Week – local support events planned World Breastfeeding Week Canada is October 1 - 7, 2012 and Sunrise Health Region has activities planned throughout the week to celebrate breastfeeding and to promote the theme of “Understanding the Past, Planning the Future.” This year’s events are coordinated by the Baby Friendly Committee a group comprised of members from several health service departments in the Sunrise Health Region, the Yorkton Tribal Council, Kids First, and interested individuals from the community. The committee is encouraging as many nursing mothers as possible to meet for the Quintessence Nursing Challenge (www.babyfriendly.ca) on September 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Yorkton Public Library. The Quintessence Nursing Challenge is a worldwide challenge to gather the largest number of mothers to breastfeed simultaneously in a set geographical area. Last year was the first time the event was organized in Yorkton and the local group contributed to Saskatchewan placing third world wide out of provinces, territories, states or countries with similar birth rates per year. “All breastfeeding mothers in the region are welcome to attend this year’s event” says Lactation Consultant, Heidi Russell. “The Committee will have gifts for all participants along with many great door prizes.” The Baby Friendly Initiative Committee in partnership with the Yorkton Colony
Quilters Guild will hand out baby slings to all moms delivering on the obstetrics ward at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre during World Breastfeeding Week. “We certainly appreciate the ongoing support of the Yorkton Colony Quilters Guild,” adds Russell. “The families that receive the baby slings are very happy to accept this generous gift.” The Breastfeeding Matters Support Group, a joint venture started by the Early Visiting Program in Public Health and Lactation Services in Primary Health, will formally launch on October 3, 2012 at 10:30 am at the Yorkton Public Library. The topic will be “Baby Wearing” which will demonstrate the use of ring slings. The group has been meeting for just over a year, and now has a permanent home with the Yorkton Public Library. “Sunrise Health Region is happy to have this partnership with the Yorkton Public Library, and is pleased that the library is providing space for the support group to meet,” said Russell. “The support group is for moms and is run by moms, with a health care professional present to facilitate as necessary.” The Breastfeeding Matters Support Group meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month. It is open to all women interested in promoting and encouraging breastfeeding by sharing stories and experience, and by connecting with other breastfeeding moms. Visit: www.SunriseHealthRegion.sk.ca
Bus program expanded The Government of Saskatchewan has expanded the Discounted Bus Pass Program to North Battleford; bringing the number of communities in the province where the program is offered to seven. The program has also been renewed for another year in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton and Swift Current. Social Services Minister June Draude says, “As a result, people with lower incomes in seven Saskatchewan cities have access to affordable public transportation, allowing them to enter the workforce, remain working, or take part in community activities.” Under this program, the province pays participating cities a $24.50 subsidy for every bus pass sold each month and the city then reduces the cost of bus passes for people with low incomes. The province will invest $2 million in the program this year. The program is available to Saskatchewan residents receiving assistance from the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability program, Saskatchewan Assistance Program, Transitional Employment Allowance, Saskatchewan Employment Supplement, or the Provincial Training Allowance. There were more than 67,000 discounted bus passes sold in Saskatchewan last year.

Change: humbling and evident Ed, my neighbor next door, stops shaving during the rush of harvest. His beard, a healthy growth of stubble, was evident yesterday when he asked me about our recent trip to Ottawa. “Well, how did the wedding go in Ottawa? Most people know the hundred mile rule – if a wedding is more than a hundred miles away, it is too far to go!” Ed commented along with his question. “The wedding was impressive, but it was humbling to keep answering the question, ‘Who are you again?’ Being a brother to the groom’s grandmother seemed to surprise those relatives under forty who were not really all that impressed that I even existed. I was living ancient history, which tends to be pretty, uninteresting stuff for most folks,” I told Ed. “Good job they didn’t get to know you, as you are just too plain ordinary to be memorable. You’re not like my grandmother’s brother Tom. He was famous at every family celebration, especially weddings, for bringing his own good Scottish whiskey but not sharing it, and he always wore the family tartan kilt. He died at ninety-four while dancing the Highland Fling!” Ed related. After a pause Ed said with deep reverence, “He went out in glory – died surrounded by bagpipes and drafty kilts!” Ed’s last comment had me suspecting that he had been spinning another yarn. Being at a family wedding and seeing some relatives after fifteen or twenty years made me
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com aware that many of them have grown much older. It was evident that I myself was part of the oldest group of relatives present at the wedding. It was both obvious and rather humbling to be one of the old timers there! Anyone can see that Ed has a beard presently, but he’ll soon shave it off. It is only temporary. In contrast, I have gone bald, and there is nothing temporary about it! Once, I had abundant hair so it is humbling to accept that it has left my head and isn’t coming back. Sadly, we often fail to see beyond the surface or the outside appearance. Just as important as the outside of the cup is the inside. We need to determine what is in our own heart that is, our motives, and the motives of others. In the Bible, we are told of Samson, who was proud of his great strength. He delighted in a beautiful woman, Delilah, who only pretended to love him. She wanted to find out the secret of Samson’s great strength and betray him to his enemies. Once Samson shared with her the secret of his strength, she had his hair cut off and Samson lost his strength. He quickly ended up in chains, in prison, with his eyes gouged out. It

was humbling for a person of Samson’s strength to be captured. In prison, Samson was powerless, but he realized the truth that his strength

was from God and for God’s purpose. His strength was so that he could protect God’s people. The enemies of Samson celebrated his captivity and they saw him as a weak captive, but it brought about their doom, as Samson’s hair had grown while in prison. What makes us proud can also humble us if we forget God gives us strength or power for His purpose, not for our own glory.
