A special signing ceremony recently launched a fouryear Bachelor of Indigenous Education program, slated to begin in Fall 2012 at Parkland College’s campus in Fort Qu’Appelle. The initiative is a new partnership between Parkland College and First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv). FNUniv’s Indigenous Education program aims to develop teachers who are skilled and knowledgeable within the framework of the Saskatchewan Core Curriculum, while placing special emphasis on the development of First Nations content in all subject areas. Students are introduced to the unique needs of First Nations pupils and the issues of First Nations education. Cultural components are also integrated throughout the program. “Parkland College is proud to be a partner in this ground-breaking project, and we look forward to welcoming new students to our halls,” says Gwen Machnee, University Program Coordinator. YORKTON’S 4-H LIGHT HORSE CLUB recently held a special year end achievement day event with members turning out to demonstrate what they’ve learned and test their skills.

Club holds annual achievement day

Submitted by Donna Turner

The annual Yorkton 4-H Light Horse Club Achievement Day event was held recently at Moon Shadow Stables (Karen Nordin and Garth Bode), with eight members taking home awards for their accomplishments throughout the year. Local members participated in a fun-filled day beginning with Judging followed by Questionnaires, Showmanship, Tack and Groom. This year the club had a lead line class for potential upcoming youth and also a couple of parents (Way to

go Chris and Rhonda!). Dalaney DePape displayed her young horse, Valentino, in the Young Horse Development Program. This is a project where a 4-H member of at least 3 years, works with a weanling and shows them at 4-H Achievement Day as a yearling, demonstrating the work they have done. This project will take 3 years to complete. After lunch there was more riding including Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Trail, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Costume Class and Bareback Class. The members again included

their parents with a Run & Ride class. The parents/family member have a course to run while the 4-H member rides but cannot pass the runner; a crowd pleaser! Participants for the day were: • Cloverbud: Kael DePape, Ana O’Neill • Junior: Grady Hawkins, Matthew ZalysSmeretsky • Intermediate: Dalaney DePape, Bryn Hawkins, Brooke Switzer • Senior: Shawna Turner Following a BBQ supper, there was a raffle and awards were presented. Awards included – Over-

all Record Book: Matthew Zalys-Smeretsky Reserve Grand Aggregate: Dalaney DePape Grand Aggregrate: Matthew Zalys-Smeretsky All members received awards for completion of the year. The local club received a grant from Sears Canada this year which members used to fund two horsemanship clinics. Members also received a grant from Farm Credit Canada which they used to purchase learning DVD’s for the club. The club had great support and thanks its sponsors for their generosity and for making the day a success.

A broken nose comes from snooping around Ed, my neighbor next door, really enjoyed seeing a good-sized white bandage on my nose. “Stuck your snout into the wrong person’s business and got a good poke in the nose didn’t you?” Ed asked in self-satisfaction at my expense. “Nothing so exciting, I donated a growth to a surgeon who seemed so young I wondered how long he’d been out of diapers,” I told Ed. Then I added, “My nose has never had so much attention before, but at my age any attention is a bonus.” Ed only wanted to know a few details, because too much talk of blood or pain makes him uncomfortable. He had five-rapidfire questions for me. They were: “How long until the bandage comes off? Where did you have the surgery done? Did they freeze your nose before the procedure? Did you watch them do the procedure? How long did it take?” I guess Ed was satisfied with the answers as he proceeded into a favorite topic of his – overpaid doctors and nurses. Thankfully, Ruby called Ed for supper or I’d be still stuck at fence while Ed wound up and down on one of his pet peeves. When I go to the doctor, I don’t care what amount of money he makes, but I do care if he can help me with what ails me.

Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher

“This is a program which I am confident will yield many benefits for every community in our area.” The Indigenous Education program is open to both First Nations and non-First Nations students. About 60 students have expressed interest. Most of the students are from the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council (FHQTC) in the Treaty Four territory. FHQTC includes the following bands: Carry The Kettle, Little Black Bear, Muscowpetung, Nekaneet, Okanese, Pasqua, Peepeekisis, Piapot, Standing Buffalo, Starblanket, and Wood Mountain. “A major focus for FNUniv is to make postsecondary education as accessible as possible to our First Nations communities,” adds Dr. Angelina Weenie, Department Head of Professional Programs. “This partnership

Benjamin Franklin spoke of doctors this way, “God heals and the doctor takes the fee.” As far as I know, Ben Franklin wasn’t a relative of Ed’s. I like the Arabian Proverb that states, “No man is a good physician who has never been sick.” Best of all, I like the words of Ambroise Pare – father of modern surgery – “I dressed his wounds, but God healed him.” All the inside information a doctor gets would overwhelm me. Sickness tends to overwhelm most people. In the Bible, we are told of a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and spent all she had, yet instead of getting better, she grew worse. The woman, hearing about Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd surrounding him and touched his cloak. She thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” And she was! Jesus healed many peo-

ple, but not for money. His healings here on earth were to demonstrate that He was, and is, the Son of God. God is concerned with both our body and our souls. Health and healing are limited here on earth. Our mortality rate is 100 per cent. Jesus came to bring God’s healing to bear upon us now and eternally. He was willing to suffer on the cross and lay down His life there for us. He arose on the third day after His death so that we could know earthly death can lead us to eternal life with God. I waited an hour on a hospital bed for the plastic surgeon to come and deal with my procedure. It seemed long, but the time was not filled with pain, suffering, or harassment. As I waited, I thought of Jesus nailed on a cross suffering terrible pain and hateful taunts. At the hospital, I was receiving the best of care, while on the cross Jesus faced the worst. He died there to heal us forever.

is another important step in extending the reach of our programs.” Parkland College of-

Millionaires season finished The season has come to an end for the Melville Millionaires. The battered WMBL club, forced to play with only 14 players and a number of them in positions they regularly don’t play, lost out in a tough fivegame series with the Moose Jaw Miller Express at Pirie Field. Game five saw the Express score early and often, knocking Mils ace Jon Mark Abbey out of the contest after just three innings as they scored six runs on the way to a 10-1 victory and a 3-2 series win. The lone bright spot offensively for the Millionaires was catcher Cam Firth who recorded three hits. The Mils faced a win-or-gohome situation in Moose Jaw and managed to stave off elimination with a 5-4 triumph. Sheldon O’Dell was the hero at the plate for Melville, homering in the first inning and doubling in the fifth, driving in three runs. Michael Medina started on the mound for Melville but was replaced by eventual winner Allen Rimer, who allowed only four hits and two runs while fanning six in a relief appearance. It took a few extra days for the Express and Mils to complete games three and four of

the first-round playoff series. Originally set to be games on back-to- back nights in Moose Jaw, the games were rescheduled to be a double-header. In game three the Express held a 5-2 advantage when the skies opened, meaning the Moose Jaw club would get the win, but it would leave the two teams needing to hook up again in the Band City for game four. The contest saw the Express score four first-inning runs and hang on for the rain, and the win. Parker Thomas got the start for the Mils and was charged with his first loss of the year. He hurled six-and-two thirds innings, walked two, struck out seven, and allowed five runs. It took 15 innings in game two, but the Express tied the series at one game apiece, exploding for six runs off Melville closer Dustin Emmons who took his first loss off the season with a 10-4 triumph at Pirie Field. Every player on the Millionaires collected at least one hit with third baseman Garrett Killgore’s grand-slam homer in the sixth inning being the big blow for the $ * Millionaires.

Millionaires season over Con't from Page 6. Ryan Talley started on the mound for the Millionaires and he was solid, giving up four Moose Jaw runs in five innings of work. Nathan Kirby and Rimer combined for three innings of scoreless baseball before Emmons allowed five runs on four hits and three bases on balls. Medina finished the game for the Mils, allowing a couple of hits and one unearned run in one-third inning of work. The Melville Millionaires took a 1-0 series lead over the Moose Jaw

Miller Express in the first game as three pitchers combined for a 6-0 shutout. Abbey was masterful for the Mils, recording nine strikeouts over seven innings in a gem of a game for the righty hurler. Kirby and Medina each tossed an inning of scoreless baseball to keep the Express off the scoreboard. Sebastian Wong was four-for-five at the plate for the Blue and White while Ben Villafuerte, Killgore and Bryson Thionnet each hammered out a couple of base hits for the home field Mils.

“Grampa Can Dry Your Basement”

Mud Runners event success The Melville Mud Runners Association can chalk up another successful summer event. The group, made up of local motor-sports enthusiasts, hosted their fourth annual Mud Bog Races and Tough Truck Competition recently and according to MMRA member Karl Sundquist, this was the group’s best event to date. “This has been a better year for entries than we’ve ever seen and we had a lot of fans out to take it in,” Sundquist admits, saying two days of sunshine certainly didn’t hurt the cause. “We always have great weather and this year we had a lot of people from out of town.” Entries in the event came from all over Saskatchewan and Manitoba with Swan River and Nipawin being two of the more distant centers to have vehicles involved. This year the group

made a few minor tweaks prior to the event, but for the most part, it was business as usual. “We focused a little more on safety this year,” Sundquist tells The Advance. “We didn’t have a problem before but we’ve done a few things to keep people safer like putting up guard blocks and cattle fence to keep people off the field and it worked very well.” Sundquist says over 80 vehicles, some stock and some modified to the hilt, were entered in the event where the pay-out for the weekend for winners was close to the $6,500 mark. With attendance and entries up the group is hoping to accomplish something they have never been able to do in the past: put some money away for a rainy day. “Right now, we’re looking at getting set up for if we had a year that was a flop or we had rain, we

wouldn’t have to take money out of our pockets and this year we might be able to do that.” The organizers are pleased with how every event went off and Sundquist says, being the owner of the land near the junction of Highway 10 and 47, he’d like to see it get even bigger and better. “You talk to people and they love everything. There’s nothing you’d get rid of or change,” he says adding many of the folks in attendance weren’t typical motor-sports fans and one of the main attraction was a pair of Montana bike and sled riders who wowed the crowd with their aerial antics. “Absolutely everybody comes here. We had some little old ladies who were excited about the bike jumpers – they couldn’t believe that – and they loved everything.”
