– Sask. municipalities to receive $216.8 million
TOP NOTCH SKIING – Asessippi Ski Area & Resort has announced it has become the first Manitoba/Saskatchewan resort to receive FIS Homologation. “FIS is the international organization that maintains standards in many areas of skiing including alpine,” says Spencer Reavie, President of Ski Asessippi Limited. Asessippi received the approval from the international body for a slalom course on the Top of the World/Roller Coaster run. It has been certified for both ladies and men, with an official vertical drop of 117 meters and total length of 450 meters. The course has
been approved and corresponds to the requirements of the ICR (The International Ski Competition Rules). “We had worked with MB Alpine when we designed this course and knew we were eligible but having received the actual certification does feel like one more achievement,” Reavie adds. “It gives our athletes the assurance and confidence that they are competing on an internationally approved course.” Manitoba Alpine will host the Manitoba Cup at Asessippi on February 4 & 5 and return March 16 -18 for the Provincial Finals. In his address to the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) annual convention, Premier Brad Wall confirmed the government will keep its promise to provide annual revenue sharing equal to a full point of the provincial sales tax (PST). That means Saskatchewan municipalities will receive record revenue sharing of $216.8 million in 2011-12, an increase of nearly $90 million or 70 per cent since 2007-08. Urban municipalities – Saskatchewan’s cities, towns, villages and resort communities - will receive $138.7 million this year, an increase of 105 per cent since 2007-08. “The completion of this important promise means that urban revenue sharing has more than doubled since our government took office,” Wall says. “That’s on top of millions of dollars our government has also provided in infrastructure funding, and to help develop new residential and commercial subdivisions. “We are working with our municipal partners to keep Saskatchewan growing and moving forward.” This year’s revenue sharing is the highest amount of operational funding provided to municipalities by the provincial government in the history of Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan’s largest city, Saskatoon, sees municipal revenue sharing increase to $37.8 million in 201112 from $29.2 million the previous year. Regina, the provincial capital, has municipal revenue sharing that will grow to $33.5 million in 2011-12, up from $25.9 million the previous year. All Saskatchewan municipalities will see increases, with overall funding based on their population. “The new funding formula provides a predictable, sustainable way to ensure municipalities know the amount they will receive in the coming years,” Wall adds. YRHC sees improvements
Patients in Sunrise Health Region will benefit from reduced waits and improved access as result of a secure computer system for the storage, retrieval, and display of diagnostic images, such as X-rays and CT scans. The system is called the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). Yorkton Regional Health Centre joins hospitals in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Swift Current, and three hospitals in Saskatoon as the first hospitals in the province that have this type of digital imaging system. “Being in Yorkton today to talk to the health care professionals and to see firsthand how PACS provides a higher quality of care to pa-
tients is impressive,” Health Minister Don McMorris comments. “Central archiving of information allows authorized providers to securely access digital images, like x-rays, ultrasounds, and CT scans, when and where patients need care. This speeds up the time for diagnosis and treatment.” “Our provincial leaders and information technology specialists have shown exceptional vision,” Sunrise Health Region (Interim) CEO Suann Laurent adds. “Sunrise Health Region is proud of our local team, dozens of people, who have worked for three years to implement the system in our region, benefiting our patients and reducing their need to travel for health care
consultations.” “The efficiency of radiology reporting is much improved with the PACS system and we no longer spend excessive time handling the many steps in the old paper and film based process,” Sunrise Health Region Chief of Radiology Dr. Johann Hahn says. Safeguards are in place to ensure that only health professionals involved in patient care access personal health information. Policies, procedures and electronic security protect the information from unauthorized use, error or loss. PACS and the Pharmaceutical Information Program (PIP) are the first components of a provincial electronic health record.

Name labels for family members
The visit of his family during the recent holiday season led Ed, my neighbor next door, to give certain family members name labels. His list of family name labels goes something like this: the really old timers; the gadget-obsessed separatists; the tireless talkers; the constant correctors; the silent, living ones; and last of all, the forever awkward angels. According to Ed, the really old-timer relatives know you from your beginning as a fat baby. They look at you with knowing eyes. They remember how you kept taking your diaper off. They tell everyone of how you bit the mailman so that he needed stitches. They always mention how you were mean to your baby sister and how you got expelled from high school for a week. It used to be that kids in a family from ten to forty were just a little self-centered; now, they are gadget obsessed. No matter where they are or what they are doing, they are glued to a device.

Don’t talk to them; don’t disturb them; they have no idea who you are or why you are there any way. They just want to be separatists in their own world of technology. Ed has the most affection for the silent, living members of a family who only mutter a few polite words and then miraculously listen to whatever is said by the tireless talkers. They escape the constant correcting of the correctors by not talking and never feel compelled to comment or smirk at the forever awkward family angels. Every family has those disturbing angel types who are always upset-
ting the situation and a bit of an embarrassment. They are not only extremely noticeable and different, but most of all, they say those things everyone thinks but would never say as the truth hurts. I told Ed that God is like a really old-timer relative who knows everything about you. Some relatives have been around a lot longer than we have been around. God has always been around and will always be around, as God is described as eternal without beginning or ending. John the Baptist, a relative of Jesus, was one of those awkward family angels known as a prophet. John appeared in the
wilderness and proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As a prophet, John was awkward in that he was extremely strange and unique. Clothed with camel’s hair and sporting a leather belt around his waist, John ate locusts and wild honey. He preached repentance to the people. John was seeking to prepare the people for the coming of the Christ, or Messiah, among them. Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. Jesus came as the one sent from God to rescue all
people from their willingness to be separatists from God through sin. In his baptism, Jesus was willing to be one with the sinners of the world, although he was sinless himself. As the Son of God, he would obey God’s laws for us, so he could be a sinless sacrifice on the cross for us sinners. God in heaven was not embarrassed by His son Jesus, but said at his baptism, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Perhaps the labels that matter most come from God and they describe us as a beloved son or daughter through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.
