The federal government’s legal team can look forward to a banner year in terms of billable hours. A recent ruling by Justice Douglas Campbell of Canada’s Federal Court found Parliament acting illegally in passing Bill C-18 without a vote. This has farmers chomping at the bit to break open the chink Campbell struck in Bill C-18’s armor. One such farmer is Duane Filson of Woodrow, Sask. who has filed suit against the federal government and hired Tony Merchant as legal counsel. Filson’s lawsuit alleges the government’s seizure of $15.5 billion worth of assets from the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) is unlawful as these assets belong to the CWB. That lawsuit has the backing of CWB supporters including Melville-area farmer Ed Sagan who is also regional coordinator for the National Farmers Union.

Too many choices makes decision making more difficult Ed, my neighbor next door, doesn’t like to go to a buffet, as he says there are too many food items to choose from. He ends up trying most of them because they all look good and then he resents the ones that were more good looks than taste. Ed goes back a second and third time for the food items he likes best, but he overeats and goes home bloated and uncomfortable. According to Ed, “When there are a lot of choices before you, it makes it worse instead of better. Just two choices are best. With two choices, you have a fifty percent chance of making the right choice.” Ed’s comments made me think of a story the evangelist Billy Graham told about a man who had trouble with his eyes. His doctor advised the man to have an operation, because he was steadily going blind. So, the man had the operation and his sight became normal again. Unfortunately, the man’s memory began to be affected, so the doctor operated again and the man’s memory returned to normal, but his eyesight failed. The perplexed doctor asked the man, “What do you choose – your memory or your eyesight?” The man replied, “I choose my eyesight, because I would rather spend my life looking ahead than remembering the past.” Seems to me, life is often only two choices and they are difficult, like deciding if it will be our memory or our eyesight. The choice we make may turn out to be wise or foolish, or it may be good, but not the best choice possible. A person can ask the right questions, ask the right person, receive the right answer and still

This young man asked Jesus, “What good thing must I do to get eternal life?” Jesus gave the rich young man a hard choice to make. Jesus told him to go and sell his possessions and give to the poor and then come follow him (Jesus). The young man chose to go away and keep his possessions and not follow Jesus, because he had great wealth. Making a choice means we cannot have it all. If the young man was to fol-
low Jesus and receive eternal life, he had to give away his wealth to the poor first. His desire for eternal life was not as great as his desire to hold on to his wealth. Some choices in life are costly and tremendously hard. Peter came to Jesus asking him how many times that he must forgive his brother when he sins against him. Peter’s choice was to stop forgiving after seven times. Jesus said Peter needed to forgive without limit or a specific number. The Bible challenges us with the hard choices.

We support this lawsuit hands down. The CWB bought the head office in Winnipeg, we bought hopper cars, we bought steamships, and that belongs to us. They say it all belongs to them. The government never paid for it, we farmers paid for it.” Sagan believes Filson’s lawsuit will be one of many Bill C-18 related lawsuits filed against the federal government this year. “The CWB’s assets belong to the farmers, it’s as simple as that. The assets have to go back to the farmers.” According to Filson, it will take about five years for a decision to be reached in the case. He is confident in Regina lawyer Tony Merchant’s legal abilities. “Tony Merchant has won many class actions. He knows what he’s doing and there will be more legal actions to come,” Sagan says. The CWB has announced preparations to take similar legal action against the federal government. “Our legal counsel is prepared to file a submission to court within days if necessary,” says Canadian Wheat Board Al-
liance acting chair Gilbert Ferre in a recent Friends of the Canadian Wheat Board release. “It is clear that the Harper government is pursuing a policy of confiscation without either consultation or compensation,” says Grandview, Man. farmer Larry Bohdanovich. Sagan believes these lawsuits could be avoided by allowing farmers to vote whether the CWB should retain the single desk or allow dual marketing. CWB supporters have an excellent case against the government and they need to understand people have a say and they can’t just force their legislation, according to Sagan. “All we’re asking the government to do is take the decision back to the farmers. They don’t want to do it because their pollsters are saying they would lose,” he says. “As far as I’m concerned, the federal government is acting as dictators,” he says. “They think they can do this because they have a majority government. In other countries they are fighting to get a vote, in Canada we have a vote but we can’t utilize it.”

Sr. Saints on top in Estevan By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer The Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) Senior Saints boys’ basketball team played in an eight team tournament in Estevan recently. The Senior Saints swept to a tournament title with a perfect 3-0 record. Sacred Heart went up against Stoughton in its openiong game, emerging with a 77-71 win. Scoring leaders were Brendon Walkington with 11 points and Carter Ruff with 10 points in the game. The Senior Saints downed the host Team, Estevan, 75-51. Preston Liebrecht led the scoring with 38 points while Nathan Ruff added 12 more. The final match saw the Saints come up against Weyburn to claim an 86-56 win. Liebrecht, who seemed to get stronger as the tournament progressed, led the way again, scoring 42 points. Nathan Ruff contributed another 19 points for the win.
MCS girls win in Indian Head The MCS girl’s basketball team captured their second tournament win of the year in Indian Head last weekend. The Cobras won the round-robin draw with a record of 3-0 after victories over Indian Head, Assiniboia and Weyburn. The opening game was against the Weyburn Eagles. The Cobras had lost a match with the Eagles earlier in the season; one of only two losses for MCS. Melville avenged the loss with a 64-53 win. The
YORKTON UNITED BLAZERS – The Yorkton United Blazers (U8), coached by Alfredo Bermundez, attended their first soccer tournament of the year in Regina on December 9-11. They finished the weekend with a three and one record and had a great weekend all around. The team had plenty to be proud of both on the soccer pitch and off. This was a first time experience for most of the players and they had a great time. Cobras came out to a fast start putting up 21 first quarter points to Weyburn’s 10. The lead grew to 37-19 at the half. In the second half, the starting unit for Melville pushed the lead to 22 points and the second unit played well to preserve an 11 point victory for the Cobras. “We were not at our best when we lost to Weyburn
earlier in the year. It was obvious that we were focussed and determined to make up for that loss. Our fast break was clicking and resulted in some quick scores. It was all started by solid rebounding from Akon Beny, Cassandra Sullivan and Kelsi Rieger.” Continued on Page 8.

Pee Wee Rock come up short in Wynyard Melville’s Pee Wee Rock made it to the final game of a tournament in Wynyard on the weekend and ended up losing out in the ‘A’ final. In the final Saturday the Major Hockey League Rock came up against the host Wynyard Monarchs and just couldn’t get their game in gear as they dropped a 7-1 decision. The Rock, who trailed 5-0 after period one and 7- 2 after 40 minutes got its goal from Tyler Grodecki with Kelsey Tuba and Jarod Prouse drawing helpers. Melville were fingered for four of the match-up’s seven minor penalties. Zach Huber was tagged with the loss between the pipes. The Rock opened the event Saturday morning with Quad Town in a seesaw affair which ended in a 9-9 draw. Alexis
Frick had a natural hat-trick for the Rock as well as an assist while Grodecki
had a couple of markers and two assists and Nick Courtorielle also lit the lamp for the Melville squad. Gabriel Croswell
and Tyler Schultz rounded out the Rock scoring with singles. Colton Screpnek was in goal for the Rock and was credited with the tie as Melville took four of seven trips to the sin-bin for minors. The game was tied 2-2 after the first stanza and deadlocked at 6-6 after two frames. Game two saw the Rock matching up with a familiar foe in the Yorkton Terriers in yet another close game. The games was tied with period scores of 1-1 and 2-2 before the Rock hammered three goals home in the third to salt away a 5-3 triumph. Schultz led the Melville offense with a couple of tallies and as many helpers while Frick blinked the goal-light twice with Prouse adding a single. The teams split eight minor infractions as Kyle Hansen stood tall in the Melville cage
recording the win. Sunday the Rock were back on home ice at the Merv Moore Sportsplex where they bounced the Ochapowace Thunder by a 17-2 count. The outcome of the game was never in doubt as the home squad led 9-0 after the opening period and 12-0 after two. Frick and Croswell lit the lamp three times each to lead the Rock attack while Grodecki, Screpnek, Hansen and Schultz had a couple apiece. Singles went to Jackson Fenske, Lauren Schick and Jack McGuire. The Ochapowace team led the penalty parade with six minors and three double-minors while the Rock were called for only four two-minute infractions. Next action for the Rock will see them hooking up with the Yorkton Century 21 Terriers Sunday at the ‘Plex.
MCS Cobras girls basketball nets tournament Continued from Page 6. “The only negative for us in that game was we had Amanda Auchstaetter go down in the second quarter with an ankle injury. She does a great job on defence and runs the floor well. We are hoping she gets back in 3-4 weeks as she is a Grade 12 and a starter.” In game two, Melville was matched up against the Assiniboia Rockets. Once again, the Cobras were off to a running start and had a 20-8 lead after the first quarter. Kelsi Rieger was able to find Janelle Rieger in the early going and the two sisters scored 33 of the 36 first half points for the Cobras. In the second half, the scoring came from a variety of players with Cassandra Sullivan scoring 7, Amanda Lowe with 6, Akon Beny with 6 and a few other players scoring a basket each. The Cobras
scored 64 points and held Assiniboia to 31 in the victory. “Defensively we played very played well. We kept their offence from getting into a rhythm by playing man to man and pressuring their guards. Once again we rebounded well and kept the taller Assiniboia team from scoring easy put backs.” The last game against Indian Head was a lower scoring affair that MCS hung on to win 49-40. The Cobras once again lead the entire way; 11-6 after the first quarter, 29-19 at half and 36-27 going into the last quarter. Janelle Rieger led the Cobras with 23
points, Kelsi Rieger added 14 points and added 6 assists, Akon Beny had 10 rebounds and 5 blocked shots and Cassandra Sullivan had 8 rebounds and 3 assists to help MCS get the win. “I am proud of our effort this past weekend. This team plays hard every game from tip-off to the last whistle. To play an up-tempo style you have to be willing to sprint and work harder to get down the floor than the defence and we usually manage to do so. We also have an experienced point guard in Kelsi Rieger who can make passes that lead to those fast break scores.”
