– Churchbridge pool needs your support

to Cowessess hasn’t been made public. Lynn Acoose, chief of Sakimay, says information meetings have been scheduled and mail-in ballots have been distributed to the 635 band members eligible to vote.

The New Churchbridge Swimming Pool Project has been selected as a semifinalist in a national fundraising competition, and it is now seeking the support of others to move to the finals. The Churchbridge project is one of 64 selected from across Canada to be named semifinalists in the $1 million Molson Coors Community Cheer funding program. To move to the final stage the swimming pool project must now receive 225 “Cheers” from supporters both near and far. They can cheer by going to the contest’s website www.ourcommunitycheer. com, scrolling down to the New Churchbridge Swimming Pool Project page and following the registration guidelines. There’s no cost to do so, however you can only cheer once, and you must be of legal drinking age. The cheering began last Tuesday and within three days the Churchbridge project had received over 100 cheers, putting it well on its way towards getting the required 225. The deadline for submitting a cheer is February 17. If the Churchbridge project receives 225 cheers and is selected to receive funding, Molson Coors could donate up to $20,000 towards the construction of the town’s $1.1 million swimming pool which will replace a badly deteriorated 40-yearold pool.

THE ONE THAT DIDN’T GET AWAY! – It was an exciting birthday for Yorkton’s Darla Lang who decided to venture out to Lake of the Prairies on her special day and try her hand at ice fishing last weekend. Not only was she not skunked, but she pulled in a whopper walleye. Lang’s big catch weighed in at 10 pounds and measured 28 and one half inches! Happy Birthday to her!

Sakimay offered $21 million flood deal An ongoing issue that’s created some tension between Sakimay and Cowessess First Nations, and Crooked Lake cottage owners and recreationists over the years could soon be proverbial ‘water under the bridge’. Sakimay and Cowessess members are scheduled to vote on the offers con-

nected to long standing claims by the bands that federal government actions visa vie a control structure built at the east end of Crooked Lake during the early 1940s resulted in flooding of First Nations’ land in the Qu’Appelle Valley. Sakimay was offered a $21.2 million deal to settle while the amount offered

Sakimay offered $21 million deal: vote slated Con’t from Page 1.

As well a ratification vote has been set Monday at the Sakimay Community Complex. Cowessess members are expected to vote on their offer in March. “We see the upcoming vote as the first steps to attaining economic selfsufficiency. Current and former leadership of Sakimay have spent the last 13 years negotiating an agreement for the illegal flooding of our lands.” The flood-claim negotiations according to Chief Acoose, have dragged on following decades of the band’s land being made unusable. Acoose says the flooding drove families from their homes on the west end of Crooked Lake.

As well, the flooding destroyed haylands and pastures upon which band members depended for feeding their livestock. The federal government estimated the flooding affected some 640 acres although Acoose points out even temporary flooding diminishes the productivity of the land, damaging valuable vegetation which is replaced by ‘marsh grass’. According to the band, Sakimay forwarded a Specific Claim to Canada in 1986 seeking compensation for the unauthorized flooding of its land. In 1998 the claim was forwarded to the Indian Claims Commission and in 1998 Canada agreed to accept the claim for negotiation, according to

Sakimay. Among the terms of last week’s agreement are those which allows for future flooding of reserve land and Sakimay co-managing water and related resources along Crooked Lake. If Sakimay ratifies the agreement, Acoose says the payout will be invested with returns from those investments directed to “quality of life” issues not currently covered by federal government funding: “our federal transfer payments don’t cover those quality of life programs and services like that – language, recreation, culture, education.” And while band members are likely pleased with the progress in negotiations, cottage owners and lake users

are probably feeling the same relief, Acoose acknowledges. Over the years and as negotiations stalled, the bands didn’t allow federal government employees access to the control structure at Crooked Lake. With the stop logs not installed, the water passed out of Crooked Lake unimpeded. That in turn resulted in lake levels dropping substantially below normal operating ranges. In many cases the lower levels created hardship for those attempting to launch or load boats. Others pointed to the lower levels as destructive to fish spawning and habitat. Former Sakimay Cottage Owners Association (SCOA) presidents Ed Welke and Fred

Daunheimer say while the water levels don’t affect them to any extent, the water stability the agreement could bring will be welcomed by others. And it may have a beneficial carryover effect in the ongoing dispute about property lease increases brought in by Sakimay in 2010 that sees rates for lots on Sakimay land hiked by 600 per cent and more, Welke and Daunheimer agree. The issue is still before the courts. Like Welke and Daunheimer, Acoose is hoping the progress on the flood claim will result in better relations between SCOA and Sakimay. Acoose says Sakimay is awaiting the outcome of a class action suit launched by SCOA against the federal gov-

ernment. In the meantime, Sakimay is looking at options for trying to resolve the leaseincrease issue, Acoose says, adding there are informal communications between the band and the association.

Surviving a humdrum winter: stay calm Ed, my neighbor next door, has hit the restless rapids of winter whitewater. He claims that since the middle of January he feels like he could drown in monotony. In spite of weekly curling, twice weekly bowling and daily coffee chats with the guys, he is restless and working toward winter crankiness. Ruby has suggested that they go to Arizona or take a Caribbean Cruise, but Ed says, “I’d rather be stir crazy at home than squandering my hardearned money on a vacation or cruise where the ship may sink anyway.” It has been such a good winter that I was surprised at Ed’s boredom. Ed claims that is part of the problem. When winter is its usual nasty self, a person is more content to stay home and keep warm. Really good winter weather makes a person edgy to be doing something. Ed wants to be out at his farm, but there is nothing to do there right now except listen to the wind whis-

It has been said that life is best lived by behaving like a duck on water. Ducks are calm and unruffled on the surface, but paddling like fury underneath. It is difficult not to get ruffled by boredom, with winter weather, daily routines and life in general. We always have a tendency to want what we don’t have at the moment. The truth is, we get upset when life deals us those hidden cards like sickness, accident, loss of job, a loved one’s death etc. It takes a lot of paddling in our minds and hearts to deal with our ordinary and shocking days

of life. Being calm and unruffled is described in the Bible this way: “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Paddling like fury underneath is pictured in the Bible this way: “Forgetting what is behind I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” We keep paddling so as to stand (stay) firm in the Lord. Our paddling involves rejoicing in the Lord always, even when we are bored and life is monotonous. Our restlessness should not be

evident to all, but our gentleness instead. We are unruffled, because the Lord Jesus Christ is near, who is our Savior from heaven. We need not be anxious about anything, as we keep paddling furiously in prayer with thanksgiving. We can be assured that God will give us peace and contentment to guard our hearts and minds in everything. Paul spent years bringing the gospel to the gentiles. In doing so, he was in jail frequently, flogged thirty-

nine lashes five times, exposed to death again and again, beaten with rods three times, and stoned. He was too involved in a life and death effort to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to be bored. His life was never monotonous or humdrum even in jail, because he was always actively living his faith. He was calm and unruffled on the surface, but paddling his faith furiously in his heart and mind in every situation of his life.

Hormonal imbalances in women and how to cope Peri-menopause and menopause are transitional stages that women naturally experience, sooner or later. Due to their very nature, these changes temporarily create hormonal imbalances. Peri-menopause leads to menopause. It can last anywhere from six months to several years. Menopause means that all menstrual periods have stopped. The average Canadian woman achieves menopause at around 52 years of age. In certain individuals, symptoms of peri-menopause and even of menopause can start in their 20’s or 30’s. Important hormones include those produced by the adrenal glands, the pituitary gland, the pancreas, the ovaries, the thymus and the thyroid gland. Female reproductive hormones include estrogen, progesterone and, yes, even some testosterone. Estrogen, produced by the eggs in the ovaries, travels through the blood, telling distant body cells what to do. ESTROGEN IMBALANCES Estrogen dominance can cause easy weight gain, abnormal periods that are very heavy or missing,

breast tenderness, depression and mood swings. Estrogen deficiency may cause hot flashes, insomnia, reduced sex drive, vaginal dryness and body aches. Women deficient in estrogen may even think they have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. PROGESTERONE IMBALANCES Progesterone, produced by the ovaries, is a calming hormone which prepares the uterus for pregnancy. With overly high levels of progesterone, women may feel sleepy or dizzy, experience depression, have an increased appetite and gain weight more rapidly. Low levels of progesterone may result in irregular periods, mood swings and increased Premenstrual Syndrome. TESTOSTERONE IMBALANCES Testosterone is an important female hormone. It helps build muscle and promotes a healthy sex drive. However, high testosterone levels tend to cause acne, unwanted hair growth and may result in an increased sex drive. Low testosterone levels can result in muscle loss, increased fat, depression and a reduced sex drive.

Churchbridge pool Con’t from Page 1. The pool fundraising campaign has been very successful to this point, raising nearly $800,000 in a little over three years. Its biggest contribution has been a $300,000 recreational infrastructure grant from the provincial government. Although several requests have been submitted for federal funding the project has not yet received a single dollar from the federal government even though the swimming pool has been the host site of Canada Day celebrations in the community for over two decades. Nearly $500,000 has been raised locally, thanks to the support of individuals, businesses, and organizations. Its fundraising efforts continue with a major gala scheduled for Saturday, February 4. Construction on the new pool by Western Recreation of Winnipeg, began last July, carried through until November and is set to begin again in early spring with the goal of holding its official opening in July as part of Churchbridge’s 125th anniversary celebrations. Anyone wishing to donate to the project can do so by sending it to Box 223, Churchbridge, SK. S0A 0M0. Tax receipts will be issued by the Town of Churchbridge for any donations greater than $20.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

by Dr. Gail Smolinski DNM® www.drgail.ca

HORMONE SUPPORT Imbalanced hormones at any age can lead to much misery and suffering in women. Naturally balancing the hormones can also help to prevent unhealthy aging. Natural means include nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies and gemmotherapy. At menopause, the adrenal glands must take over some of the functions of the “retiring” ovaries. Therefore, it is especially important to nourish and support the adrenal glands during peri-menopause and menopause. Nutritional supplements to support the adrenal glands can be very beneficial at this time. Homeopathic remedies

are marvelous for minimizing unwanted symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause, since they can often help women to rebalance their changing hormones and relieve symptoms. Gemmotherapy uses the buds and young shoots of trees and shrubs, since these plant parts include all the properties and energy of the future plants they were designed to develop. They contain not only genetic information, but also vitamins, minerals, nucleic acids and growth hormones. With all the nutrients they have to offer, gemmotherapy remedies are very rejuvenating! Exactly what aging women want! In order to help you achieve your health goals,

U12 Bulldogs compete in Regina tournament By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer

VOLLEYBALL SKILLS – Shelby Richards serves the ball at the recent SVA U17 Sask Cup Tournament. The U16 McSweeney Selects, who both hosted and played in the tournament, used it to sharpen skills for the season. The team plans to compete at a national tournament this year.

The Yorkton United Bulldogs Under 12 boys soccer team competed at the Annual Regina Soccer Association tournament. Friday night, the Bulldogs faced Aurora Athletics from Saskatoon in the first game of the round robin. Both teams came out defensively and there was no score by halftime. In the second half, Aurora started the scoring which woke up the Bulldogs offence. Yorkton scored four goals in the second half to win the match 4-2. Goal scorers were Jordin Rusnak with two and Matthew Cochrane and Jacob Pindus with singles. Saturday the Bulldogs faced the top team in Regina, REU Chelsea. The hard fought match ended in a 0-0 tie. Coach Andy Wyatt says the Bulldogs carried the play but just couldn’t score. “I thought our boys played a pretty good game and we put a lot of pressure on REU but we just couldn’t find the back of the net. They had a very strong goalie and tough defenders.” The third and final game of the round robin was against another Regina team, ACFC Red. Offence was not a problem in the game. Yorkton led 2-0 at half as the Bulldogs clinched a 9-0 win. Assistant Coach Dave Malinowski says, “Unlike the REU game, we finished our chances and really played well offensively. A lot of different kids got on the score sheet and gave us the confidence we needed going into the semis.” Based on the round robin results, Yorkton finished first in their pool and played REU Predators on Sunday morning. The Bulldogs came on strong at the beginning and hit the crossbar in the first minute. Most of the play was in the REU end but once again, near misses were the story of the day. REU had a 1-0 lead after the first half due to a Yorkton miscue on defence. In the second half, the bounces

started to go Yorkton’s way and after goals from Jacob Pindus and Jordin Rusnak Yorkton took the lead. More hit posts happened but Yorkton held on to win the semi-final 2 – 1 which led to a finals match against a very strong team from Humboldt. In the final Humboldt started strong and dominated the play for the first half. It was only the strong play of Yorkton keeper Nicholas Fetsch and some timely saves by the Yorkton goal posts that kept Humboldt off the score sheet. Though Humboldt outplayed Yorkton in the first half the second half was a different story with Yorkton having a slight edge which led to the first goal of the game being scored by Jordin Rusnak for Yorkton. The Bulldogs continued to play well but with five minutes left Humboldt scored to tie the game. Following a scoreless 10 minute overtime, the game went to a shoot out. Yorkton ended up winning 2-1 in the shootout to take the gold medal. Coach Wyatt notes, “It was a great final game. I thought throughout the tournament the boys controlled the games and outplayed the other teams but against Humboldt, we found ourselves being outplayed in that first half. Credit to Humboldt because they were a very good team. What I was very happy to see was how our boys responded to the challenge and how well they played for the rest of the game. After Humboldt tied up the game we dominated and rarely had the ball in our end. Matthew Cochrane hit the post in overtime and others had good chances while I don’t think our goalie had to make a save at the end of the game. Both Matthew Mandziuk and Nick Fetsch scored in the shootout and Fetsch played great in goal to limit Humboldt to one goal in the five penalty shots they had.” The Bulldogs next game action will be on the January 27 to 29 weekend in Regina. All of Yorkton’s seven competitive soccer teams will be attend this tournament, hoping to represent Yorkton well.

CJHL announces new playoff format for next year The Canadian Junior Hockey League has announced a new regional playoff format for its four western provinces beginning in 2013. The British Columbia Hockey League, Alberta Junior Hockey League, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and Manitoba Junior Hockey League will move to a five team tournament and crown the first-ever Western Canadian Championship (WCC) winner. The WCC will include a host team and the champion from each of the four western leagues. The 13-game tournament will include a round-robin schedule followed by two semifinal games and a championship game. According to SJHL president Bill Chow, the new tournament may prove to be a boon for the SJHL. “By having the WCC, there may be a community that couldn’t host an RBC Cup, but may be able to host a western championship,”

Chow says in a recent interview. “Most arenas in the SJHL are probably adequate but the accommodation factor has to be first and foremost.” The WCC winner and the runner-up will both represent Western Canada at the RBC Cup National Junior A Championship. “Congratulations to the four western leagues on this significant step in the growth of Junior A hockey in Western Canada and across the country, says CJHL chairman Kirk Lamb. “The new championship format will create a tremendous opportunity to showcase our players, teams and communities and is yet another example of the strengthening relationship among Junior A leagues in Canada. I commend the four western leagues on partnering together in the development of this initiative.” Lamb and the four western provinces are

honoured to announce the hosting rights for the inaugural WCC in 2013 have been awarded to the BCHL community of Nanaimo, BC. The 2013 Western Canadian Championship will be held from April 26 to May 5. “I want to congratulate Nanaimo on being selected to host the first WCC in 2013,” says BCHL Commissioner John Grisdale. “I am extremely confident the host committee, the Clipper ownership group, their fans, the City of Nanaimo and the volunteers will work cohesively towards ensuring the championship is not only successful in Nanaimo, but the legacy left will provide a blueprint for the other Junior A leagues to follow.” Nanaimo Clippers owner Ken Wagner is proud to bring the inaugural WCC to Nanaimo during a milestone season for the franchise. “Hosting the WCC in conjunction with our 40th anniversary is a great

way for the team and community to celebrate. I believe the Nanaimo Clippers are a flagship franchise in the CJHL and it is a true honour to

be selected as the host city for the first-time event. Nanaimo offers the ultimate in hospitality, beautiful scenery and a strong volunteer base,

which will result in a successful experience for everyone involved.” Continued on Page 11.

Sled ‘n Snap offers photo contest A new snowmobile website Sled ‘n Snap (www.slednsnap. com) is an online photo contest and community forum that celebrates snowmobiling in Saskatchewan. It features safety and riding tips, local events and trail maps. The Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association and Flaman Group of Companies recently launched the new website as a way to reach out to the sledding community. “Our biggest challenge is getting the message out to our many members about safe and courteous riding,” says Chris Brewer, President and CEO of the

Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association. “This contest is a fun and interactive way to spread the word to a larger audience.” “But it’s more than just a photo contest. It’s a destination site for anyone who snowmobiles. There are links to trail maps, articles about safety, a tips forum and more.” Sled ‘n Snap’s premise is simple – visitors to the site upload their photos in a variety of categories like Trail/Scenery/Wildlife, Youth and Family, Action!, or Club Rides. At the end of March, the photos will be judged by an association panel who will select

a group of finalists and then the public will vote for the grand prize winner. Up for grabs is the use of the amazing, fully-loaded Stealth aluminum enclosed sled trailer for one year. There are also category prizes from the Saskatchewan Association and every entry is eligible for the random draw for a new two-place aluminum tilt trailer from Flaman Trailers. And it’s a way for snowmobilers across the province to share memories and common experiences. They can leave comments on photos or share pictures on Facebook. “One of the submitted

photos is of a cabin that’s used as a shelter, and someone’s already commented on how they remember going to that same place,” says Brewer. “There may not be snow all over the province, but we encourage riders to load up their trailer and head north, where many clubs are opening up their trails. There’s still a lot of time to enjoy snowmobiling in Saskatchewan.” The submission period for the photo contest ends March 31, 2012. To be eligible for any prizes, entrants must have a registered sled. For more information, visit www.slednsnap.com.

CJHL moves to new playoffs

Broncos fall to Pee Wee Millionaires The Melville Pee Wee Millionaires reaped the benefits of having a full line-up in a home matchup with the Swift Current Broncos recently. “We had almost the entire team make it for a change and it made a big difference for us,” offers head coach Darrell Sass. The South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League Millionaires scored twice in the first period and four times in the middle frame on the way to a 7-2 win over the Broncos. Six different players scored a goal for the Pee Wees with Preston Kotylak, Jordan Mish, Austin Johnston, Rin

Beny, Colby Holloway, Jordyn Williams and Liam Tittle each contributing a goal in the victory. Beny also registered a pair of assists while Luke Wyatt, Kotylak and Johnston each notched one helper. Dylan Sies got the win between the posts for the Melville squad, turning aside 34 shots while his teammates fired 43 pucks at the Broncos cage. The Mils led 2-0 after the first period and held a 6-2 advantage heading to the game’s second intermission. Broncos were nailed for four of seven minor penalties called.

Continued from Page 10. The WCC will be hosted by the BCHL in 2013, followed by the MJHL (2014), AJHL (2015), and SJHL (2016). A Site Selection Committee will be responsible for selecting a host team annually, upon the recommendation of the host league. When Melville Millionaires coach and GM Jamie Fiesel was reached for comment, he wasn’t sure whether he liked the idea of the tournament or not. “I’m on the fence right now,” Fiesel explains. “If the Melville Millionaires make it to the Anavet Cup, I guarantee we’d make some money... with this new tournament we’d be losing three home games and that’s a lot of cash.” SJHL president Chow says he agrees the two teams which make the Anavet Cup did have the opportunity to cash in financially, however he feels for the entire league the western championship might make more sense. “The potential is that each league and each team in the league and depending on the formula and amount of money generated each team within the SJHL and MJHL may benefit financially,” Chow explains.

OVERSTOCKED ON NEW M SERIES MacDon SWATHERS

How much horsepower your tractor has available and how it gets that power to the ground are directly related to the size of your engine. Versatile HHT tractors use a Cummins QSX 15L engine to make the most of your tractor. Versatile HHT Series tractors always have the power you need to do the tough jobs. Better torque and better fuel consumption, from a better engine. After all there is no replacement for displacement.

ENGINE SIZE DOES MATTER!
