CA$H BAC K FOR CHRISTMAS Deadline nears

for MS clinical trial

– applications accepted until February 24 Applications will close Friday, February 24 for Saskatchewan multiple sclerosis (MS) patients interested in volunteering for a clinical trial in Albany, New York. Until midnight on that date, the online application form (www. health.gov.sk.ca/msclinical-trial) will remain available and the toll-free number (1-855690-9901) will be open 24 hours. The two-year, doubleblind clinical trial at Albany Medical Centre has room for eighty-six Saskatchewan MS patients. To date, about

589 people have submitted applications online or by phone. Saskatchewan has one of the highest incidences of MS in the world, at 340 per 100,000 residents. An estimated 3,500 people in the province have been diagnosed with MS – a neurological disease in which the communication ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord is impaired or destroyed. Applying for the clinical trial does not guarantee participation. Continued on Page 4.

Thin ice warning issued GET OUT GET ACTIVE! – We may be enjoying a milder than normal winter but the ski trails are still in excellent condition at Good Spirit. According to Good Spirit Ski Club member Anne Stupak, the shelter has seen a record number of skiers and membership is at 55 at this time. The next event coming up for the GS Ski Club is the only night loppet in the province. The Lamplighter Loppet is a non competitive ski event the club is hosting for the second time again this year. The Lamplighter loppet is slated for Saturday, February 18 starting at 6:30 p.m. from the Good Spirit Park Rec Hall. Ski distances go from 8 km to 15 km, skiers choice. There will be a hot meal waiting for everyone on return to the Rec Hall and the rest of the evening will feature the talents of some of the skiing participants. All are welcome! Cross Country skiing is not for everyone, but snow shoeing is a great alternative for those who still want to get out in the fresh air. It’s an annual occurrence that many tend to overlook but two area boys could have lost their lives earlier this week and RCMP are warning Saskatchewan residents to take note. At approximately 2:10 p.m. on February 7 Kamsack RCMP received a call of two five year old boys falling into a dugout approximately three miles north of Hyas, Saskatchewan. Five children around the same age had been playing outside when they were able to climb a fenced in dugout that was being aerated. They proceeded to the area of open water before two of the boys fell into a hole in the ice and became partially submerged in the water. Continued on Page 2.

Two of the other boys present remained to assist by grabbing onto the boys while the fifth and youngest ran for help. Two of the boy’s mothers came running out onto the ice and were able to pull the boys to safety. Both boys were transported to Kamsack Hospital by the Norquay Ambulance where they were treated for mild hypothermia. The dugout which was aerated was estimated to be at least 10’ deep. The Kamsack RCMP would like to commend the heroic efforts of the two mothers as well as the other youth at the scene. Hyas is located approximately 50 kilometers north west of Kamsack, Saskatchewan. The RCMP are reminding everyone to be aware of dugouts and other bodies of water that may have thin ice due to factors such as aeration devices.

Potential research participants will be randomly drawn from all applications, and then go through a screening and assessment process to confirm they are eligible to be involved in the research. The first of the eligible Saskatchewan patients are expected to travel to Albany in March. It will take several months to contact, screen and assess enough patients to fill all 86 spaces available to Saskatchewan patients. Half of those participating in Albany will receive the Liberation Therapy

procedure, and half will receive a placebo procedure. In 2010, the Saskatchewan government was the first province in Canada to commit funding for research into the effectiveness of the Liberation Therapy as a treatment for MS. In the absence of a suitable research proposal within the province, the government pledged $2.2 million to cover costs for patients selected to participate in the Albany research trial. Take Me To the Pilot flies in to Yorkton By DEVIN WILGER N-R Writer Take Me To the Pilot is far from an overnight success, but the young band starting to catch on with audiences on the strength of its debut EP, and it’s starting its tour with The New Cities, which will make a Yorkton stop on February 16 at the Army and Navy Veterans Club. Mike Bilenki, lead singer for the group, promises “lots of loud, fast, fun, furious music” at the show, and says that their goal is to put on a show that connects to everyone in the audience. “We like to make the record sound as polished as we can, but when we’re live we’re a full on rock band. We hit as hard as we can

and make it sound as big as possible. One thing that translates really well is the energy, that’s one thing you can expect even more of live,” Bilenki says. Apart from touring, the band is busy putting together new music, filming videos, and Bilenki says that the group has no time to rest. They’re also planning their next release, and he says being on the road is a mixed blessing creatively. While it puts them in a great musical mindset for writing songs, there’s not always the time or space to sit down and really write a new song. “More than anything else, it gives you a wealth of experience to draw on when you’re writing your music. A

lot of the songs I’m working on right now directly relate to all the stuff we’ve had to encounter on the road, from leaving your friends and family behind, to meeting new people, to highs and lows of life on the road,” he says. Speaking of songwriting, Bilenki reveals that most of the songs are written on acoustic guitar and built up from there. He says that method gives the songs a good core to build on, and that having a strong song beneath the production is a way to keep things working no matter what they do. “I’m a big believer that a great melody will make a great song,” Bilenki says. While being constantly on the road can be

difficult, especially in terms of being away from family and friends, Bilenki says that the experiences in different cities with different people are something that makes it worthwhile. “You can judge your life by how many humourous anecdotes you’ve collected over the years, and our collection is pretty healthy after all the touring

we’ve done. We’ve lived some cool stuff and have some cool stories to tell,” Bilenki says. This is the first time the band is going to be in Yorkton, but Bilenki has fond memories of the city from back in the eighth grade when he was part of Team Manitoba as part of the National Debate Championships. “That’s not a cool thing, and everybody in

the band heard me say that and are rolling their eyes at me right now,” he jokes, and says he hopes the family that billeted him will come out to see the band. Take Me to the Pilot and The New Cities will be at the Army and Navy Veterans Club on February 16. Tickets are available for $10 at Booster Juice.

Harlem Crowns clown around at YRHS By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer

JOSH MASTER clowns around with some of the YRHS Senior Raiders at the Harlem Crowns game. The team was in Yorkton to take on the local team and show off their comic take on the sport. Money raised at the event went to support the local teams.

Their game may be unorthodox. Their antics on the court bring out laughter in their audience, but make no mistake, these guys can play some serious basketball. The Harlem Crowns were in Yorkton, performing their magic on the court at the Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) Wednesday night taking on the YRHS Senior Raiders before a full house. YRHS Senior Raider coach Jason Payne says The Harlem Crowns came out of the U.S. to bring a Harlem Globetrotters style exhibition to Yorkton. Payne says in addition to providing some light hearted humor into the game, the Crowns also showcase some top quality basketball skills. Funds generated by the event will help support the school teams, Payne closes. Harlem Crowns spokesman Herb Scaife Jr. says the Crowns originate from the Harlem Globetrotters. Started in Chicago, the Harlem Globetrotters developed a highly entertaining style of basketball which featured well developed skills and routines set in a comic format which delighted audiences around the world. No one could resist their antics on the court as

they challenged local teams and invited them to be part of the show. After 17 years of touring, Globetrotters founder Al ‘Runt’ Pullins changed the name to the Harlem Clowns. Herb Scaife Sr. was a member of the original Harlem Clowns team. The Clowns soon had more bookings than they could comfortably handle and the Harlem Crowns were born. The Harlem Crowns team in Yorkton included Herb Scaife Jr. and Herb Scaife Sr. from Oakland, CA, Keena Payton from Emeryville, CA, Josh Master of Vancouver, B.C., Darrell Jones from Reno, Nevada, Mario Malave of Oakland, and Tion Lofton from San Francisco, CA. All are former college basketball players. The current Halem Crowns tour started at Lethbridge, Alberta, came through Yorkton and moved on to Brandon, Man. Collectively the Crowns perform at about 90 shows for about five months each year, says Scaife Jr. The Crowns perform for the kids, says Scaife Jr. They also like to help raise money for the school and the community, he adds. “It’s a good thing. It’s good for the kids. It’s good for the community and it’s good for us,” he closes.

SJHL partners with Canalta SJHL President Bill Chow is proud to announce a new 10-year partnership with Canalta Hotels. YRHS grapplers earn medals By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer The Yorkton Regional High School Raider wrestling team travelled to Saskatoon to compete in the Western Canadian High School Wrestling Tournament. The huge tournament featured over 600 athletes in attendance. Fred Slater and Noah Misener took home silver medals in the novice tournament Friday while Jessica Riffel won the gold in her class in the Elite Tournament Saturday. Next up for the team will be the Small Cities Tournament in Prince Albert at the beginning of March.

JESSICA RIFFEL took home gold at the Western Canadian High School Wrestling Tournament in Saskatoon.
