Lake users wary of pipe plan

– mine causes concern Faced with massive flooding a year ago that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and brought on a stateof-emergency declaration, home and cottage owners at Katepwa Lake could be confronted with a new water-related challenge. This time around, however, it’s the possibility of low water levels that has seasonal and permanent residents at Katepwa concerned following the announcement by Brazilian mining giant Vale it’s studying the potential for constructing a potash mine near Regina. If Vale proceeds with the project it’s considering building a 70-kilometre pipeline from Katepwa to the Kronau and sending 40 million litres of water daily to the mine. Wheth-

er Vale will build the mine will be decided this year and if it gets government approval, construction on the pipeline could start in 2013. That has Katepwa residents worried, according to District of Katepwa administrator Glenda Hodson, who says a lack of information is adding to the uncertainty. Dispelling that uncertainty and providing accurate information was the pressing imperative to the meeting held Saturday at the resort village office and attended by representatives from Saskatchewan Water Corp. (SaskWater) and Saskatchewan Watershed Authority (SWA) along with area elected officials. Continued on Page 2.

They don’t know what’s going on,” Hodson says. “There’s too much speculation and no concrete answers” but the meeting and the information gathered by the district will enable it in turn to disseminate it to lake users and residents, Hodson says. The District first heard about the possibility of a mine and the Katepwa pipeline during a meeting last fall with SaskWater, says Hodson, but it was very preliminary: “At that time, basically all (Sask Water) knew was the name of the potash company and the location of the mine.” At Saturday’s meeting the District presented a list of questions to SaskWater and SWA and pressed for a week deadline for those questions to be answered after which it would provide information its webpage. Saturday’s meeting was restricted to government and area municipal officials, Hodson says, but once the more information from that meeting is provided to the public, a meeting or meetings will be called that’ll be opened to the public. Hodson says the District is also encouraging

people to provide their comments and opinions via Facebook created by the District. There could be a wide range of concerns posted back to the District considering the number and variety that have been expressed from home and cottage owners, and lake users in general. “It’s a wide base of concerns, anywhere from the basic that everyone’s asking – how it will affect the water level and the flow rate, to much more complex questions like where the water is going to be pumped from (to) what will it do to the fish quality. “There’s questions about what’s going to happen to left-over salt this mine is going to create. There’s questions about what happens to the salt tailings piles, how many years do the mines have to dispose of these, how are they going to remove them, how much additional water is required.” And while no one has specifically asked her

about what the project could do to property values, Hodson says she’s sure that question is on the minds of many Katepwa Lake property owners. One of those cottage owners is Merv Ozirny of Melville who believes pumping such a massive volume of water from Katepwa will have a substantial negative impact. “It’s going to upset the ecology of the water and the fish in that area. I think there’s going to be a very, very strong (public) stand against it.” While there’s been surplus water to the point of flooding at Qu’Appelle Valley lakes including Crooked and Round last year, that situation could change quickly, Ozirny points out. “It (10 per cent of Katepwa Lake’s total volume) could be a lot (to be pumped) in a drought year… (and) it’s not only going to affect Katepwa, it’s going to affect the lakes downstream.” Ozirny says.

We are living in an inflammation nation

Sadly, we are a nation of people whose bodies are full of inflammation. Inflammation can occur from different causes, including a poor diet, unbalanced hormones, chemicals, bacterial or viral infections, and, of course, physical injuries. INFLAMMATORY PROCESS

Inflammation usually accompanies damaged tissue. When cells are injured by any cause, various chemicals are released. This process results in inflammation of damaged tissues that are rich in blood vessels. The inflammatory process starts when there is trauma to body tissues. It prevents the spread of injury, disposes of disease-causing microorganisms and promotes healing. The four main local signs of inflammation are redness, heat, swelling and pain. Often, there is also a loss of function. During the acute inflammation phase, repair mechanisms are put into place by the immune system. Normally, healing should occur within 8 to 10 days. CHRONIC INFLAMMATION However, at times, the persistence of the infectious agents or the injured person’s weakness, or both, may postpone the healing for more than two weeks. Chronic inflammation may also develop from prolonged exposure to internal or external toxic substances. Chronic inflammation may eventually lead to healing or to the formation of granulomas, which are local inflammatory tumors or growths. Granulomas are typically found in diseases like sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. ANTIINFLAMMATORY DIET Certain foods are better than others for fighting inflammation, while certain foods actually cause inflammation. The best fruits for this purpose are cantaloupe, pink grapefruit, raspberries, strawberries and rhubarb. The worst are banana and mango. The best vegetables are carrots, collards, garlic (Yes!), kale, onions, spinach and sweet potatoes. Avoid corn, white potatoes and especially French fries!

Breads – The best are flour tortillas, mixed grain, pumpernickel and rye breads. The worst are bagels, English muffins, French or Vienna bread, Kaiser rolls and hot dog or hamburger buns. Wheat, generally speaking, is considered inflammatory. Pasta and Grains – The best are barley, couscous, kasha and rice noodles. The worst include cornmeal, corn pasta, millet and white rice. Oils – The best are almond, apricot kernel, avocado, canola, hazelnut, olive and high oleic safflower oils. Avoid cottonseed, palm kernel and high linolenic safflower oil. Crackers, chips, etc. – The best are Melba toast, saltines and tea biscuits. The worst are corn chips, potato chips and pretzels. Nuts and Seeds – The best are almonds, cashews, flaxseed, pecans, and Brazil, hazel, hickory and macadamia nuts. There are no bad ones! Herbs and Spices – The

best are curry powder, turmeric, ginger and garlic. There are no bad ones here, either! Beverages – Calli, green and herbal teas, carrot juice, club soda and mineral water are the best. The worst are soft drinks, lemonade and cranberry juice. If you eat fish, avoid farmed salmon. Choose wild caught salmon instead. NATURAL ANTIINFLAMMATORY OPTIONS The well-known supplement, Max GXL, is very effective for lowering the level of inflammation in the body. Therapeutic enzymes,

taken between meals, can also fight inflammation very effectively. As well, there are some very valuable homeopathic remedies, taken orally, that can decrease pain and inflammation. They can also help to minimize the bad effects of injuries

and promote healing. Homeopathic topical choices for inflammation include Arnica gel and R30 ointment. I find both of these to be excellent for reducing inflammation and pain. Certain essential oils are excellent for reducing inflammation, minimizing further tissue damage and speeding healing. Wintergreen, peppermint, clove and nutmeg essential oils are all antiinflammatory Lavender and myrrh work well for inflammation due to tissue damage and bruising. If inflammation is due to a bacte-

Tim Horton’s Terriers claim tournament title Fresh off of their Russell Initiation Program Tournament’s A side championship win, the Yorkton IP Tim Hortons Terriers took to the road again to attend the Esterhazy Initiation Tournament. The IP Terriers picked up

right where they left off, winning all three games on their way to the Esterhazy Initiation Tournament’s A side championship. In the tourney opener, the Terriers came out firing, defeating a game Langenburg Warrior squad 21-2.

Terrier power forward Liam Hoffman potted two goals and was named Rising Star of the game, while winger Chance Happy, fighting through illness all weekend, was named the game’s Most Sportsmanlike Player. The second game saw the

YRHS Athletes of the Month

The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS)/ CAB Clothing Male Athlete of the Month for November, Jason Blommaert, is a Grade 12 student and has maintained a good academic average with special interests in construction and welding. He has played volleyball at Columbia School and as a Raider since Grade 9. Blommaert recently received the Alex Robichaud Memorial Award. Blommaert also plays hockey and baseball and winning various championships. -no picture available-

The CAB Clothing/ YRHS Female Athlete of the Month for November, Brandey Blahut, is a Grade 11 student who maintains a 90+ average. Currently she is on the senior girls’ basketball team. During this year’s cross country season Blahut was successful in placing in the top 15 at provincials.

She also participated on the senior girls’ volleyball team last fall. Blahut is the External Publicity Director on the S.R.C. and plays in the concert and jazz bands. Outside of school, she is working on her Grade 9 piano, and enjoys spending time with her friends and snowboarding. She helped coach basketball this past summer and looks forward to reffing elementary basketball. Blahut would like to thank her family, all coaches, and Mr. Hayden for all his extra hours helping to train the team for this year’s upcoming basketball season.
