To Brazil and back – winners – local youth capture top honors at world competition Yorkton students have shown they have what it takes to not just compete on the global scale but to dominate. The Board of Education of the Good Spirit School Division (GSSD) is recognizing the amazing achievements of the YRHS Robotics team. This past week, they participated in, and were awarded the top ranking team in the World Skills Americas robotics competition held in Sao Paulo, Brazil! Team members in attendance include Bo Chiasson (Grade 11) and Jayden Leister (Grade 12) as well as coach Mr. Kevin Chiasson, YRHS Practical and Applied Arts teacher. The YRHS Robotics team consists of four members: Bo Chiasson, Jayden Leister, Rachel Machnee and Taylor Pachal. All four students attended the Skills Canada provincial competition as well as Skills Canada Nationals competition but only two

students from the first place team can participate in international competitions. The WorldSkills Americas competition included teams from North and South America. The next and final step is attendance at the WorldSkills International competition to be held in Leipzig, Germany in July, 2013 where the local pair will compete against teams from around the world. Bo and Jayden have been preparing for the past four months through a series of modules by practicing their programming skills on a robot similar to the one they would be given to work with at the competition. Two days before competition, the boys learned that there had been dramatic changes to two of the four modules meaning that everything they had practiced was incorrect.

HIV awareness

December 1 is World AIDS Day and the Sunrise Health Region is taking the opportunity to raise awareness locally by handing out ribbons at the Parkland Mall from 11:00 a.m. until noon on this Saturday. World AIDS Awareness Day is observed annually on December 1. This year’s theme is “Getting to Zero” – Zero New Infections, Zero Discrimination, and Zero AIDS Related Deaths. In Saskatchewan there has been a significant increase of new infections of HIV since 2003. The theme “Getting to Zero” highlights how everyone has a part in reducing the spread of HIV and bringing AIDS related deaths to zero. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). HIV is easily killed outside the human body and therefore can only be transmitted directly from person to person, either by sexual contact, exchange of blood or body fluids or from mother to child. According to the UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations program on HIV and AIDS, in 2011 there were an estimated 34 million people in the world living with HIV. Of the 34 million people living with HIV, about half do not know their HIV status. In Canada, one in four people who are living with HIV don’t realize it. Continued on Page 20.

New referral process to benefit Sask. patients There’s a new way of doing things and the provincial government says it will mean Saskatchewan patients will now benefit from innovative scheduling options that reduce the time spent waiting for consultations with specialists in order to receive surgery and other treatments. Eight groups of specialists have adopted the streamlined process called pooled referrals, and a new provincial service is making it easier for specialists to participate even if they don’t share an office. Health Minister Dustin Duncan took part in the official opening for Referral Management Services, which facilitates referrals from physicians and other clinicians. “Through the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative, our government is encouraging the use of the pooled referral model that has been successfully implemented by several groups of surgeons in the province,” Duncan says. “This is a common sense approach that gets people to a specialist sooner so they can arrive at a diagnosis and agree on a treatment plan.” Pooling referrals is about improving patient choice by offering the patient the option of seeing the next available specialist. Patients are consistently assigned to an appropriate specialist with the shortest wait time or they can choose to see a specific specialist. “Before we started offering pooled referrals five months ago, the average wait for a gynecology appointment was 44 days,” Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region’s Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Corrine Jabs adds. “We’ve cut that almost in half to 24 days. By levelling their workloads,

our gynecologists are able to see patients sooner and achieve a more manageable workload. This is just one of the ways our region is focusing on reducing surgical wait times and enhancing our patients’ experiences.” The Obs-Gyn Department has outsourced the referral process to the new provincial service. Referral Management Services confirms receipt of the referral with the referring physician and contacts the patient within two weeks about an appointment. Specialists receive regular reports about the types of medical conditions being handled, the length of patient waits and other information that can be used to manage future demand and further improve health care delivery. “Developing Referral Management Services from scratch was an exciting project for HealthLine,” Saskatchewan HealthLine Director Roberta Wiest says. “After extensive consultations we took part in a collaborative effort with medical department heads, the Surgical Initiative, the Saskatchewan Health Quality Council, the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region Information Technology Department and our project consultants to create more efficient business processes that support better service to patients.” So far, two groups of specialists in Saskatoon, four in Regina and two in Prince Albert are using pooled referrals, with six more preparing to adopt this approach for improving access to care. Of these, two groups of specialists are using HealthLine’s Referral Management Services and three others will start in 2013.

Do whatever it takes to improve

Whatever steps we can take to streamline and speed up the process has got to be a good thing. Saskatchewan patients are expected to benefit from new scheduling options that will reduce the time spent waiting for consultations with specialists in order to receive surgery and other treatments. To date eight groups of specialists in the province have adopted a process called pooled referrals, and a new provincial service is making it easier for specialists to participate even if they don’t share an office. Pooling referrals is about improving patient choice by offering the patient the option of seeing the next available specialist. Patients are consistently assigned to an appropriate specialist with the shortest wait time or they can choose to see a specific specialist. Provided each specialist is well informed and kept in the loop this initiative makes logical sense. “Before we started offering pooled referrals five months ago, the average wait for a gynecology appointment was 44 days,” Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region’s Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Corrine Jabs says. “We’ve cut that almost in half to 24 days. By levelling their workloads, our gynecologists are able to see patients sooner and achieve a more manageable workload.” Referral Management Services confirms receipt of the referral with the referring physician and contacts the patient within two weeks about an appointment. Specialists receive regular reports about the types of medical conditions being handled, the length of patient waits and other information that can be used to manage future demand and further improve health care delivery. So far, two groups of specialists in Saskatoon, four in Regina and two in Prince Albert are using pooled referrals, with six more preparing to adopt this approach for improving access to care. If it’s proving that it works, the lives of Saskatchewan patients are worth the effort.

Pass the bill, bring on the change The way I see it...

People can get as angry as they like but I think it’s a good thing. In a system that is so riddled with problems that we can barely see our way out, transparency will be one step towards taking an honest and objective approach to making things better for all concerned. There’s a bill that’s soon set to pass through the House of Commons that will require First Nations in Canada to publish their financial statements – including the pay and expenses of the chief and council. I say if they have nothing to hide and they are proud of the way they are running things then what’s the big deal? The deal reportedly is though, that there are many chiefs and councils (no, not ALL) that are pocketing hefty pay cheques while others on the reserve are left to struggle. Houses are falling to pieces, people are going hungry and some chiefs are living the high life (on the taxpayers dime). According to reports, the chief on the Peguis First Nation in Manitoba takes home $220,000 a year – tax free. The blood tribe band in southern Alberta apparently has received a whopping $75 million from Aboriginal Affairs. Chief Charles Weasel Head and his 13-member council earn $1.7

million in salaries, honoraria and travel expenses. And like the articles I’ve been reading state, this wouldn’t be terrible if the reserves were being run well, but there are many problems. When are we going to get with the times and Shannon Deveau create change that is obviously so desperately needed? What may have worked and been called for a hundred years ago is not working today. Why are we continuing to hand over dollars where they are unquestionably being misspent? I agree with the comments of one reader on this topic and they are: “There is an old saying: The best way to enslave a man is to provide for his every need. They (reserves) are prisons in many respects – they hold people back from building a future and keep them locked down in a culture of being victims. They are a form of segregation and promote repression and stagnation. It is time for First Nations to step forward and grow as a people, instead of being trapped in the past and wasting away.” By all means lets make things more transparent and following that, let’s take the steps needed to follow through on lasting, positive change.

Column

CFL fans and Justin Bieber fans don’t overlap Justin Bieber was booed at the Grey Cup, something which probably could have been predicted from the moment he was announced as half-time entertainment. It was a bad move to have the teen idol take the stage at the event, and both his management and the organizers of the event should have seen the negative reaction coming, and decided against having the young star perform at the event. I don’t have anything against Bieber or his music myself, but I also would never call myself a fan. I don’t need to be, he makes music that appeals to young women and he’s good at reaching that demographic. There are a lot of young women out there, many of whom buy music and support their favorite artists, and he’s made a career by appealing to them. Good for him, I’m not going to begrudge the young man his career. That said, he was simply the wrong choice for halftime entertainment at the CFL’s biggest game. It’s nothing really against him as a performer, with a receptive audience he’s going to go down well, but that audience is not going to be in the stands at a football game. Football and Bieber’s brand of pop music don’t really overlap demographically. The kid never had a chance on that stage, and the reaction to his half time show was a good example of that.

Things I do with words... Column Devin Wilger One might wonder what the logic was behind having a teen sensation on stage at a football games. It could have been an attempt to expand the demographics of football fans to include people outside of the traditional ranks. If the league can get fans when they’re young, they might be able to get life-long football enthusiasts out of them. If they can get young girls on their side, which is probably the most difficult audience for the CFL to attract, they might be able to expand their demographics into uncharted territory for the league. Even if a crew of pre-teens might be otherwise uninterested in a football game, the promise of Bieber could get them in the seats, in theory at

least. But that’s just ignoring the actual core audience of the sport, which is predominantly male. A male audience is also less than receptive to Bieber’s brand of pop music. I have my own theory as to why that is, that being young men wishing the young women would pay attention to them rather than pop stars, but that’s beside the point. Young men aren’t going to be particularly fond of Bieber’s brand of pop music. People over twenty-five are going to be largely indifferent, but would be hoping for half-time entertainment more in line with what they would listen to normally. Bieber isn’t really made for this game. I understand the gambit to a degree, but the CFL needs to consider their demographics if they want people to actually pay attention during the half-time show. Bring in someone that the actual fans of the game would want to see, rather than trying to draw the eyes of people who would otherwise ignore the game. Gordon Lightfoot, who also performed, got a much better reception, and was also more likely to appeal to an audience that had come out to watch a bit of football. Still, for most people, the half-time show is a chance to refill drinks and pay a visit to the nearest bathroom facility, so maybe it doesn’t matter who they choose.

Privatization is not the answer for Sask. To the Editor: The Green Party of Saskatchewan (GPS) is encouraging the Saskatchewan Party Government not to privatize the Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan (ISC). Privatization is not the way to make the Crowns more accountable. In-

stead, these agencies should be democratized by transforming them into Crown Co-operatives. As a Crown Co-operative, ISC would still be owned by the taxpayers of the province through the Government of Saskatchewan, but these agencies would operate like cooperatives. The key features

of Crown Co-operatives would include: • The election of the Board of Directors, • A public annual general meeting, • The paying of dividends to taxpayers (when it is feasible to do so), and • The publishing of quarterly financial reports.

Saskatchewan Crown Corporations need to be democratized, not privatized. This means the balance of power within each Crown Co-op would lie with the taxpayers of Saskatchewan. Victor Lau, Leader of the Green Party of Saskatchewan, Regina, SK.

Sunrise parking situation a topic of contention To the Editor: Sunrise Health Region is advertising that effective November 20, 2012 they will start to charge for parking in the parking lot at Yorkton Regional Health Centre. The rates range from $1.00 per half hour to $10.00 per day. I have had occasion to visit the Yorkton Health Centre on many occasions, and each and every time, it would take a good 15 to 20 minutes just to get through

Admitting, and then I would have to wait at least another half hour past my stipulated appointment time with the specialist or diagnostic services. The way that the doctors or diagnostic services schedule appointments would indicate that they can see at least two patients in half an hour. Theoretically I should pay $2.00 for one hour, or perhaps $3.00 to get another half hour leeway. But that’s only in theory, because without fail, I’ll spending upwards

to 3 hours or more before I’m done! My question to the Sunrise Health Centre is: Will Sunrise give me a voucher to offset the extra parking cost due to delays outside of my control? Or should I just pay the $10.00 day fee?! The $1.00 per half hour may not mean much to a lot of people, but it sure means a lot for us seniors! Kaare Askildt Preeceville, SK.

To the Editor: The Communist Party of Canada condemns the barbaric Israeli aggression against Gaza, which has already killed 100 people including 23 children, and inflicted yet another serious blow to the infrastructure and economy. This crisis threatens to become even more dangerous as Israel prepares for a massive ground invasion. The Netanyahu government is deliberately provoking this volatile situation for its own narrow political purposes, by whipping up anti-Palestinian sentiments in advance of the upcoming Israeli elections, and to prepare for possible military attacks against Iran and Syria. This scenario poses the real danger of a wider regional conflict, or even a catastrophic war involving imperialist powers beyond the Middle East. Those who seek to assign “equal blame” for the crisis ignore the decades-long Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories in contravention of international law and many important resolutions of the United Nations. This so-called balanced approach also dismisses the fact that over 1,400 Palestinians were killed in the infamous Cast Lead operation of 2008-09, and that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and injured by the Israeli forces during periods when there were no rocket attacks from Gaza. The true motives behind the latest aggression were revealed by Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai, who told Haaretz newspaper that the goal of the present operation is “to send Gaza back to the Middle Ages… only then will Israel be calm for 40 years.” The agenda of Netanyahu and the most reactionary Zionist forces, and their supporters in the US and Canadian ruling classes, is the apartheid-style removal of the Palestinians from all the lands occupied and claimed by Israel. The Communist Party of Canada calls upon all our members and friends to help step up the pressure on all parties in Parliament to speak out against the Israeli attacks in Gaza. We condemn the Harper Tories for their unconditional backing of Israeli aggression, and for their shameful support for the brutal genocide directed against the Palestinian people. We demand an end to Israel’s illegal and inhuman siege of Gaza and an end to the continued occupation of the West Bank (including the removal of illegal Jewish settlements and the ‘Apartheid Wall”). We reiterate our support for Palestine’s right to self-determination expressed as a viable and truly independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, including the right of return for all displaced Palestinians. This is the only way towards a just settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict, which is critical for the achievement of genuine and lasting peace in the Middle East. The first step towards such a solution is to mobilize maximum opposition to end the criminal Israeli attack against Gaza! Darrell Rankin, Communist Party of Canada.

THE NEWS REVIEW - Thursday, November 29, 2012 - Page 7A

Statistics provide vital info. Did you know that across Canada, people speak a total of more than 200 languages in their homes? That fact comes courtesy of a book just released on November 13th titled the 2011 Canada Year Book. The almanac-styled volume, published by Statistics Canada, is a thorough report on the social and economic life of our country and its citizens – according to the answers you (and the rest of us!) supplied in the 2011 Census. It has more than 500 pages of tables, charts and analytical articles on every major area of Stats Canada’s expertise. The book tells more about the languages spoken in Canadian homes. For instance: • In 2011, 17.5per cent of the Canadian population, or 5.8 million persons, reported speaking at least two languages at home. In 2006, 14.2per cent did so (nearly 4.5 million persons). • In 2011, 63.5per cent of the population whose mother tongue was neither English nor French reported speaking English at home. • Nearly seven million Canadians reported speaking French most often at home in 2011, compared with

Parliamentary Report Op-Ed Column by Garry Breitkreuz 6.7 million in 2006. However, they made up 21per cent of the Canadian population, compared with 21.4per cent five years earlier. • Between 2006 and 2011, the number of persons who reported being able to conduct a conversation in both of Canada’s official languages increased by nearly 350,000 to 5.8 million. The bilingualism rate of the Canadian population edged up from 17.4per cent in 2006 to 17.5per cent in 2011. While those facts may be little more than a curiosity, you may be interested to know why the answers you supply in the Census are important – or, for that matter, the answers you supply to one or more of the 350 or so other surveys that Statistics Canada regularly conducts. The surveys ask about almost every aspect of Canadian life and livelihood –everything from how, when and where you work, to how much money you

make and spend, to which vegetables you grow – and how many. Some people find these surveys annoying, but the information they gather is invaluable in helping us all to better understand our country. Statistics Canada, the organization that conducts them, is a member of the government’s industry portfolio. Stats Can, as many have dubbed it, is mandated to collect vital and reliable information on Canada’s population, resources, economy, society and culture. Our elected representatives as well as many businesses, unions, non-profit organizations and individuals make better decisions because of Stats Can surveys – decisions that ultimately affect us on many levels most of us could never imagine. Constituents sometimes call my office to ask whether or not they must participate in Stats Can surveys. While some surveys are, in fact, mandatory,

others are not. For instance, the Labour Force Survey must be completed. So must agricultural and business surveys. However, other surveys are voluntary. Skills competition turns out winners Con’t from Page 1.

Instead of getting frustrated, the pair worked extremely hard to forge through the new material and understand it for the competition; a truly remarkable feat. Not only did they learn the material but they mastered it with their robot being nicknamed “Usain Bolt” due to the high level of accuracy and speed it was able to attain, “We are ecstatic that our students are not only able to compete on the world stage but that they are the individuals leading the way in their field,” states Bryan Cottenie, Board Chair. “This is a great

opportunity for our students to show that the work they are doing in a classroom setting is of international standard. Mr. Chiasson and his team are to be commended on their dedication to not only this competition but to the upcoming WorldSkills competition in Leipzig, Germany next summer.” The YRHS team competed against students attending trade schools comparable to SIASTaged students; they were the youngest team in attendance making their win that much more remarkable. Bo and Jayden achieved a final mark of 91.5 out of 100 with the second place finisher scoring

82 points; it was a decisive victory. “It’s not all about winning but about personal growth, that has been our goal all along, to develop personally,” states Chiasson. He goes on to say, “This was a perfect scenario where students were under pressure in a competitive situation and they performed wonderfully. The color of the medal didn’t really matter but it was experiencing the international level of competition and achieving our goal that helped us all to personally grow. “Community support with volunteers helping in both time commitments and funding has been tremendous.

Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve the levels we have. Additional support is always welcome as We prepare to head to Germany in July.” The group estimates that they will spend approximately 2,000 hours in preparation for both international competitions. The Practical and Applied Arts Department at the Yorkton Regional High School has seen dramatic growth in this newer course offering at the school. In the fall of 2009, the YRHS Robotics Club started as an extra-curricular activity with three students involved. Over the years, and as interest has grown, a Robotics 10 course was implemented at the school by Chiasson and, due to rising popularity, Grade’s 9 and 11 robotics courses are now being developed to allow students to continue with their interests in this area. On the afternoon of Monday, November 26,

Bo and Jayden along with Chiasson will be at the Legislature in Regina to demo their robot for Members of the Legislature. Afterwards, they will join local MLA Greg Ottenbreit who will introduce them to the Legislative Assembly. For more details on Bo and Jayden’s trip to San Paulo, check out

the team’s dedicated Facebook page at: www. facebook.com/yrhsrobotics. The link can also be found on the GSSD website at www.gssd. ca. As the year progresses, the students will continue to post updates to this page up to and including WorldSkills International in July, 2013.

THE NEWS REVIEW - Thursday, November 29, 2012 - Page 9A

The farmer is trained, moves on and settles in Submitted by Kaare Askildt, former Preeceville area farmer in training. This is the 19th of a series on getting settled in Hazel Dell. What was supposed to be a Saturday BBQ with close friends, had to be cancelled due to the inclement weather. High winds and rain. We actually watched what appeared to be vertical sheets of water being pushed eastward by the 70 km winds. It spooked the horses and they all galloped in from the pasture to seek shelter in the barn! My wife had erected a gazebo in the yard, which the wind picked up and tossed into the trees. The BBQ has been rescheduled for a later date. The torrential rain and forecasted drop in temperature overnight caused my wife to take pity on the horses. She loves them so much, and they love her right back. She decided to put blankets on them for the night. The rain had stopped and the horses

had wandered back out to the far south eastern pasture, so she had to call them back to the barn. They heard her voice and ran back to her in full gallop. The corral by the barn had become a virtual mud slide, and the horses slid to a halt. It’s a dirt floor in the barn, and with all the rain some water got in there and turned it to mud as well. Honest, I didn’t realize how bad it was out there, so when the dogs wanted out, I just opened the door and out they went. Trust me I didn’t know! However, I was given a vivid description of what happened next! Try to visualize. The horses were in the barn and shaking from being cold and wet; the pecking order meant nothing as they all wanted my wife’s attention, which resulted in the horses crowding her. Then into the barn bounced three barking dogs full of energy, and they also wanted my wife’s attention. It’s a small barn, in fact just a three tie stall stable.

The horses acted up and started pushing each other, the dogs were running around the horses, my wife got pushed, fell over a dog and ended up face down in the mud with the dogs running over her. She leapt back on her feet, grabbed the horses one after the other and threw the blankets over their backs. She wanted to get rid of the dogs before securing the blankets; in fact she had murder on her mind! But the dogs were still barking and running, causing the horses to back out of the barn and the blankets starting to slide off. With fire in her eyes she let out a bone chilling wolfish growl that could be heard all the way to Preeceville, and managed to chase the dogs out of the barn and secured the horse blankets on the horses. She was spitting fire and nails coming out of the barn, she chased the dogs back to the house. When she opened the door, the dogs ran right up and crowded behind me. My

beautiful wife looked like she had spent some time at a mud spa. I couldn’t make out the kind of clothes she was wearing as they were all covered with a blackish mud, and all I could see of her face was the white in her eyes. I didn’t quite understand the guttural utterances and growls she aimed in my direction, but I gathered that whatever she was saying, it wasn’t particularly nice. After she cleaned up and calmed down, she told me in graphic detail what had happened out there. All I could say was: “Oops, I’m sorry! It won’t happen again! But that mud pack on your face probably worked wonders on your skin!” She saw the humor in the situation, and just started to laugh!

The bad weather reminded me about a story from the old days. A Norwegian freighter was headed out of the Oslo Fjord into the Atlantic when the Captain radioed a lighthouse operator for a weather report. A thunderstorm was coming towards him, and the radio reception was really bad. The report came back garbled and he could hardly hear the operator. “Please spell the weather report,” suggested the Captain. The lighthouse operator came back with: “W-E-TH-O-R-R-E-P-O-R-T.” “Good grief,” said the Captain, “that’s the worst spell of weather I’ve had in a long time!” We’re getting closer to Christmas every day! Speaking about Christmas, do I have a

Tax loss selling strategies Develop a strategy for tax loss selling now to reap dividends later. Tax loss selling typically occurs in the first half of December and often results in bumpy markets. The stocks most vulnerable to volatility are those trading near their 52-week lows. The best performing stocks are also affected because investors often sell winners to crystallize profits in conjunction with tax loss selling in order to minimize or eliminate capital gains. Mutual fund managers who trigger losses to avoid showing them in yearend reports exacerbate the volatility. However, these actions open the door to opportunity. Investors who have been sitting on the sidelines are well positioned because they can acquire good quality stocks whose prices have been depressed by tax loss sellers. Unlike tax loss sellers, who must abide by superficial loss rules, investors with cash have an advantage because they can acquire the depressed stocks before the tax loss sellers can re-enter the markets. Investors who are not sitting on cash, but need to do some tax loss selling, should act early in order to be at a cash advantage during the tax loss selling season and benefit from depressed prices too. Additionally they will have more time to assess trends, analyze potential purchases, and determine best exit points. Early action helps avoid even greater losses in the sale of losing positions, which can result from liquidation when selling pressures are at their peak.

Financial freedom by Kim Inglis

www.reynoldsinglis.ca After a less than stellar year, the markets offer investors a number of tax loss selling prospects. The TSX Venture Index is into double digit losses on a yearto-date basis. The S&P/ TSX Index also has a number of losers, although on a year-todate basis it is still slightly in the green. The S&P/TSX 60 Index's five worst performers so far this year are Research In Motion (TSX: RIM), Enerplus (TSX: ERF), Penn West Petroleum (TSX: PWT), TransAlta (TSX: TA), and SNC-Lavalin (TSX: SNC). In order to crystallize a capital loss, investors must abide by superficial loss rules and wait 30 days before repurchasing the investment. These rules prevent taxpayers from realizing losses without actually disposing of the assets. However, there are options for investors who wish to realize losses but still want exposure. They can buy an exchangetraded fund that is linked to the desired sector, or purchase shares of a similar company. For instance, an investor who wants to sell Barrick Gold (TSX: ABX) but is still bullish on gold could purchase the iShares S&P/TSX Global Gold Index (TSX: XGD). Alternatively, they could acquire shares of another large cap gold

producer, such as Goldcorp Inc (TSX: G) or Kinross Gold Corp (TSX: K). However, don't sell a stock just to trigger a tax loss. Investment decisions must be based on tactical thinking and careful evaluation. Be sure you have no reason to continue holding the stock. If your analysis suggests it can recover, you may want to make a different choice. The concept of tax loss selling appears simple but there are intricacies to consider. Before embarking on any new strategies, investors should consult with their tax advisors. Not so happy a Christmas season for many This year not everyone will be preparing for a Merry Christmas. Holidays can be very painful for people who have experienced a loss of any kind. The pain of grief can come from many different sources. Yes, having experienced a death is very painful around the holidays, but so are the pains of many other factors in life. There is no “happy pill” that one can take to magically remove the emotions of grief. This year you may be facing a diagnosis of a terminal illness, loss of job, loss of friends, maybe you are having a difficult time to make ends meet. Perhaps you have experienced a separation or divorce and your Christmas may be very difficult this year.

Whatever you loss may be, take comfort in the fact that you can draw support and comfort from those around you. Your family and friends can form a team approach to deal with the loss, and together you can make it through these holidays. One can’t dwell on the past, “I should have” and “If only I would have”. We have to move beyond that point. If we do not move ahead we can become very bitter. In becoming bitter, we will show anger. When anger is displayed openly, we will hurt those whom we love the most. We can decide to make our Christmas less stressful by not conveying anger and bitterness to our family members. Often our emotions are

When I am coasting on the hill tops and all is going well, I have learned very few lessons in my life time. Perhaps this year Christmas can be less stressful for us, because of our loss. We can do less running around and less shopping. We can spend more time in building family relations by being together. We can use our time wisely and focus on the real meaning of Christmas. We don’t need all those material things that will be exchanged a few days after Christmas, or

contagious and other family members will respond to our outward expression of emotion. How can we turn our loss around into a learning experience and grow from it? God is walking with us; we are not alone. He will help us through this difficult time if we but give Him a chance. I have often discovered the greatest lessons in life when I walked the darkest valleys in life. When things were the most difficult, I learned to trust in the Creator, and I spent more time in prayer.

things that get broken just days after Christmas and land up in the garbage. God always takes our weak moments and turns them into pillars of growth. He takes our difficult situations and uses them for our own good. As we seek to trust him more in the small trials in life- He will sustain us and provide for our every need. God encourages us to forgive each other. An unforgiving attitude can eat us up inside and prevent us from moving forward and having a good Christmas. Often funeral homes, hospitals or churches will offer a “Blue Christmas service” around the holidays. If you have experienced a loss of any kind, I encourage you to attend a service. This service of remembrance will

SUDOKU RULES The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid (also called “boxes,” “blocks,” “regions,” or “subsquares”) contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which typically has a unique solution. Completed puzzles are always a type of Latin square with an additional constraint on the contents of individual regions. For example, the same single digit may not appear twice in the same 9x9 playing board row or column or in any of the nine 3x3 subregions of the 9x9 playing board. This week’s puzzle is medium. See the solution on Page 20.

The province’s innovative and globally competitive manufacturing sector and the businesses comprising it are the focus of Saskatchewan Manufacturing Week, held November 26-30. In 2011, the value of Saskatchewan’s manufacturing shipments was $12.6 billion. Almost half of the province’s manufacturing sector is based outside of Regina and Saskatoon. As of December 31, 2011, Saskatchewan had 1,063 manufacturing establishments across the province. Small businesses made up 88.1 per cent of these establishments. “Our manufacturers are ambassadors of the Saskatchewan brand,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd comments. “Farming, industrial and commercial operators around the world increasingly know the word ‘Saskatchewan’ when they see it, and actively look for it. It represents quality they know and trust. This week is an opportunity to acknowledge the people and business responsible for this global recognition and the contributions it has meant to this province.” According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, the value of Saskatchewan’s manufacturing shipments set a new record for the month of September, posting the highest percentage increase in the nation on a yearover-year basis, up by 7.7 per cent. Nationally, figures were up only 1.8 per cent. “This industry is a significant driver of our economy, both in terms of gross domestic product and employment,” Boyd concludes.

HIV Awareness Day

BIG BOY – Hi there, my name’s Diesel. I’m a one year old labshepherd cross, and I’m a neutered male. I’m big and friendly, and I get along with all sorts of people and other dogs too. I’m looking to join a loving, responsible family, and I know there’s someone out there who can’t live without a dog like me. To learn more come visit the SPCA or call 7834080.

Con’t from Page 1. While there is no cure for HIV, it is treatable and preventable. With the development of safe and effective medications, individuals living with HIV are living longer and healthier. Knowing your HIV status has two important benefits. If an individual is HIV positive, they can access treatment, medical care and support before symptoms appear. And secondly, an individual can take the necessary steps to prevent the spread of HIV to others. In Sunrise Health Region information on HIV and HIV testing is available through family physicians, nurse practitioners, local Public Health Offices and 601 East

Outreach in the SIGN Building on Broadway Street in Yorkton. 601 East Outreach is a satellite office of AIDS Saskatoon and has been in existence for over two years in Yorkton. HIV related stigma and discrimination can affect whether someone living with HIV gets tested and accesses medical care and support. “By increasing personal knowledge about HIV and challenging the misconceptions, it helps to create a supportive community for people living with HIV”, says Deanna Bartok HIV Strategy Coordinator for Sunrise Health Region. “We encourage everyone to wear red ribbon on December 1st to show your support of individuals living with or affected by HIV.”

Seven points in five games is the statistic that has given the Yorkton Harvest’s season new life as the team has gone from battling to just staying out of dead last to chasing the final SMAAHL playoff spots in what is shaping up to be an intense race for the rest of the season. The Harvest continued their hot play for much of last week as they beat the Notre Dame Argos at home on Wednesday to extend their winning streak to three games in what was a 4-2 affair. The Terriers rough start to the month of November is now an afterthought after a bounce back weekend in goal from Kale Thomson. Solid penalty killing and defense saw the Terriers sweep the Melville Millionaires in their weekend series in another intense installment of the Highway 10 Rivalry. Going into the weekend set the ‘Terriers were riding a three game win streak after wins over La Ronge, Weyburn and league best Flin Flon while Melville was struggling despite hot goaltending from SJHL goalie of the Week Alex Wakaluk. The Millionaires had lost six of their last seven games heading into the weekend, losing the footing they once had on the top of the Sherwood Division and needing a turnaround to keep pace with the suddenly hot Notre Dame Hounds and the Terriers, who both were eager to take advantage of the struggling Mils. The series saw a flip of the October matchup with Melville hosting Friday’s game at the Horizon Credit Union Centre. Melville looked like they were going to rise to the occasion with the first two goals of the game in the first period coming from Daniel Orsborn and an Allan Kilback goal with five seconds left in the period to give the home Mils some serious momentum heading into the second period. Momentum quickly turned the other way as Tayler Thompson continued his stellar play in his return

big win to extend their winning streak to four in a row. Kale Thomson had a slow night in net, just facing 21 shots, but made the saves needed grabbing the win in goal. After Friday’s thriller matched the intensity and entertainment of the first two October games Saturday night’s game in Yorkton had an electric feel going in with 1255 in attendance at the Farrell Agencies Arena and the game did not disappoint. Kale Thomson got the start in net after earning the nod with his performance in Melville Friday and after only facing 21 shots the night before was in for a much busier night as he and Wakaluk went toe to toe in what was to be the best goaltending showdown of the season. The Terrier powerplay struck once again as a Russell Trudeau high sticking penalty led to Tyler Giebel deflecting in a Brady Norrish slapshot from the point to give the Terriers the first bounce of the game and a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. After being outshot 1410 in the first period the second was all Millionaires offence as they were given six minutes of powerplays in the second half of the period as Austin Bourhis was the recipient of a mixture of bad luck and bad discipline in taking two penalties in a five minute span to close the period with a questionable holding penalty followed by a charging infraction leaving the penalty box to put the pressure on his team.

round out the first period scoring before Notre Dame returned the favour to start the second period. Levi Morin added a powerplay goal to his assist on the Lumb marker to give the Harvest a 2-1 lead before the Argo’s tied up the game with a powerplay goal of their own to head into the second period intermission. Logan Herchak scored the game winning goal before Lynndon Pastachak

added an empty net tally for insurance as the Harvest won all three games of their FAA homestand going into their road meetings with the Regina Pat Canadians and the Notre Dame Hounds. Saturday’s meeting with the Pat Canadians was the Harvest’s first game against a top SMAAHL in weeks as the Scraped Dutch Chocolate

Harvest had the advantage of playing Beardy’s then the Argo’s at home, but the Harvest proved their strong play was not the product of weak competition as they rose to the occasion and matched the second place Canadians in their own building. Carson Cayer opened the scoring for the Harvest after a scoreless second period before Chase McKersie gave the Harvest a 2-0 lead with fifteen minutes to go in the third period in what was looking like two more points with the Harvest up 2-0 and just needing to hold on defensively to wrap up the fourth straight win. YRHS basketball looks to end era with success By CHASE RUTTIG N-R Writer Three seasons ago the YRHS Raiders Sr. Boys Basketball team began a rebuilding program after losing all but four role players on their team that went to the Regional Finals. After a two year stretch that saw the Raiders finish one quarter away from Hoopla in 2010-11 and advance to the big dance last year, the Raiders look to send off a generation of hard working and special talent with another run at Saskatchewan basketball’s Holy Grail. It will be hard to top a bronze medal finish last season but a new look Raiders squad will be up to the task. Gone are seven Grade Twelve players from last year’s squad which rode an impressive regular season record to a top four seed and home Regional Playoff games to wins over Weyburn and Regina Miller to advance to Hoopla where they lost a tough semifinal game against Moose Jaw Central before beating Meadow Lake in the bronze medal game. In is a crop of new faces from the talented YRHS Jr.

program mixed in with yet another solid group of veteran Grade Twelve leadership that are poised to carry on the recent Raider Basketball tradition of success. “Our goal is the same as it is every year, and that is to make Hoopla,” said head coach Jason Payne but when asked on expectations to start the season he was unsure. “It is hard to tell, until you have went out there with fans in the stands, the scoreboard on and referees you don’t really know what you have, kids are going to react differently in games than they do in a practice and it is going to be awhile to know what we have and how things shake out.” The Raiders strength is once again going to be the two man combo of forward Ben Redl and guard/forward Daniel Mandziuk. Entering their fourth year playing for the senior Raiders, the former Saskatchewan Provincial Team players have been the teams offensive catalysts ever since putting on Raider uniforms and will once again be counted on to use their athleticism

and offensive skill to lead the Raiders. Redl, a tall finesse post player can run the floor and has a wide array of post moves in addition to being able to shoot from the outside while having length and leaping ability to give him a shot blocking threat on help defense as well as crash the offensive boards. Mandziuk is a combo guard who can do everything from run the point to playing a forward role, can do a little bit of everything on the court, filling the stat sheet while leading the Raiders fast break with excellent court sense and passing skills. Beyond those two players coach Payne feels the Raiders will have yet another strong starting rotation saying, “We have two players I can feel have what it takes to play at the next level, and we have two or three more that might be able to as well, so even though we lost seven really good players last year we still have a strong team.” The Raiders will be employing a new motion based offensive scheme this year, something that is going to steepen the learning curve

RAIDERS SR. BASKETBALL tips off this weekend as the Raiders look to repeat their success of last season when they finished third in 4A at Hoopla. according to Payne, making the teams first trip to Melville’s annual home tournament something of a tune up for the Raiders as they look to employ new systems and new players in for the first time, with some playing their first ever senior high school games on the weekend. The Raiders will have no time to rest after Melville as they head to Saskatoon Centennial’s annual tournament in what will be an early pre-Christmas test for

the Raiders as some of the top 4A and 5A talent will be awaiting the Raiders in a tournament the Raiders have had success in the two years they have visited. Home dates will include SHHS/YRHS four team round robins Dec. 14/15 and January 4/5 with the 3rd Annual York City Classic taking place February 1/2 with the Raiders looking to revenge their overtime loss to the provincial champion North Battleford Vikings in last years York City

Classic Championship Game. A new year of 4A basketball is about to tip off for a Raiders squad that despite losing many key faces, has a strong returning core mixed in with hungry fresh faces in an attempt to get back to Hoopla for the second straight year. It is hard to tell in November, but if the Raiders play of the last few years has been any indication they will be ready to contend come playoffs in March.

Saints b’ball begins new life in new division for 2012-13 season By CHASE RUTTIG N-R Writer After a lengthy run of being one of the 4A division’s peskiest underdogs, the run and gun Saints are headed back to the 3A category and in addition to the new division the Saints will also likely have a new playing style. “We are returning eight guys from last year with four grade elevens and grade twelves returning so two thirds of our team is returning, but we are losing our three leading scorers and will probably not have the same transition game as we had with those athletic players in Nathan Ruff, Preston Liebrecht and Logan Coutts,” said head coach Garrett Karcha. Despite the loss of their old guard Karcha feels that the Saints will have a much better team defense and shooting team this season to make up for the potential of losing their highly effective transition game of past years. Grade twelves Brendon Walkington, Brock Liebrecht, Carter McKay, and Colin Shewchuk will provide experience and defense as they did as grade elevens last year, but one of them is likely going to have to develop into a scoring role if the Saints are to contend this season. Underclassmen David Ojo and Carter Ruff will give the Saints two

players who will be able to play both in the mid range game and in the post while giving the Saints size they haven’t seen in recent years as Ojo and Walkington will give the Saints two natural post players for the first time in years while Ruff can play in the post when needed and can also play the shooting guard and small forward positions giving Karcha options he has otherwise not had in his tenure as Saints head coach. In addition to the new strengths in size and shooting, the Saints will also be looking to more man to man and pressing defense something that comes with having better matchup options. “In past years we needed to use strictly zone to combat being a smaller school and lacking true post players, but now with the added size and the fact that most 3A schools run zone we would like to see how our man to man defense looks more to add an extra element to our game,” mentioned Karcha. As for the switch to the 3A Karcha mentioned that the lower division still has very talented teams and that his Saints squad will be prepared saying, “The 3A division is always competitive and we have been actively trying to face 3A schools in the past few seasons here and there so we know what we are getting into this year.” Karcha also mentioned that his

team should get through his conference as four teams advance to the Regionals rather than the two team system put in place in the 4A division and that the Saints will be going up against Wynyard, Melville, Esterhazy, Moosomin and Kamsack in their new conference alignment. Going into the opening weekend Karcha and the Saints have the difficult task of having one less week of practice than their hometown rivals in the YRHS as the Saints making 4A volleyball provincials prevented them from practicing as a full squad until Tuesday, giving them just three practices before their season opener Friday night against the hosts and familiar foes MCS. The Saints will then travel to what will be a tough early season challenge in Caronport before wrapping up their pre-Christmas break schedule with their SHHS four team round robin with the YRHS, MCS, and Canora and returning to the YRHS in their first action after the break. Trips to Moose Jaw Vanier and Lumsden round out the Saints road tournament schedule with Lumsden on the February 7-9 weekend serving as the Saints final test before Conference and Regional playoffs. By far the biggest date on the Saints calendar will be the 2013 York City Classic Febuary 1/2 as the Raiders and the Saints will once again be teaming up to host the third

inaugural tournament which houses the best 4A and 5A talent and will now be featuring some of the best 3A talent Saskatchewan has to offer. “Coach Payne and myself worked on getting some top 3A teams into this years York City Classic and as always the tournament is going to be a chance to see where we stack up and is at that turning point of the season where you see what your teams strengths and what you will be looking at heading into the stretch run towards March.” Playoffs begin March 8/9 in Wynyard for Conferences before March 15/16 Regional Playoffs and finally Hoopla at the March 21-23 weekend, a place the Saints can never be counted out of after years of threatening to ruin much bigger 4A schools March dreams in close calls in the Regional playoffs. A new division will be fitting as the Saints look to find a new identity in shedding the giant killing role they had in 4A. The fun run and gone might be gone as well, but an always well defensively coached team that creates a high amount of turnovers can never be counted out and with new size and new competition it is going to be interesting to see how the 2012-13 SHHS Saints basketball season shakes out. If anything has been learned from the Saints 4A years it is this: never count out the Sacred Heart Saints.

MC Knoll basketball supports breast cancer research By CHASE RUTTIG N-R Writer A great thing about sports is the potential they have to do good things in a community. That is exactly what MC Knoll is doing as they begin their drive to sell 200 pink MC Knoll basketball t-shirts to support breast cancer research as part of their 2012-13 basketball season. Coach Mark Schendel has been doing fundraisers for his basketball program the past two years via a shootathon pledge drive and this year decided to go the route of selling t-shirts with breast cancer research as the focus. “Everyone knows a story of cancer affecting someone they know

and one of the things I love about sports is that it teaches you life lessons and one of those is giving back,” said Schendel. “We got 200 t-shirts printed off and will be selling them at fifteen dollars a piece with the costs of the shirts being covered by local businesses,” explained Schendel who mentioned the t-shirts are not just for basketball fans, but for anyone who wants to donate and support a worthy cause in the community. Another way to promote the campaign is Valentine’s Day Battle of the Genders game where the MC Knoll Basketball team will play the YRHS Jr. Girls team at MC Knoll and there will be a “Pinkout” day to promote the

t-shirts and breast cancer awareness. Donations and pledges can also be made to the MC Knoll Basketball program for those who want to further support the campaign. D’s Signs and Designs donated $1000, Schmidt Homes and Heartland Fuels each donated $500, as well as McDonald’s and Fox FM who also donated $500 a piece to cover all of the costs of printing the shirts. The slogan on the back of the t-shirt says “One Team. One Dream” something Schendel believes is fitting to the cause their program is fighting for in breast cancer research. T-shirts and donations can be purchased from MC Knoll school

YNHL kicks off trial season for 2012-13 By CHASE RUTTIG N-R Writer On a snowy November night the Yorkton Novice Hockey League opened shop on a night that proved the merits of a hometown league with less than desired driving conditions making parents grateful for the short distance to the FAA. After years in the Major Hockey League the Yorkton Minor Hockey program decided to open its own five team league in order to cut on travel as well as shift a focus on growing players with practice and fundamental time over a focus on game experience. Seven weeks of practice time led to the league’s first game last Wednesday as two of the league’s teams got the honor of playing in the potential new league’s first ever game. Novice hockey organizer Ryan Hoffman mentioned this idea has floated around for years and finally a survey showed that over 80% of parents showed interest in doing a homegrown league at the novice level. “Sport Canada studies have shown that this level is crucial for the growth of fundamentals and we have been focusing over the last couple of years to increase practice time so we made some

changes and started the league after seven weeks of practice,” said Hoffman. Each team will play a twelve game league schedule until the February followed by a brief playoffs schedule giving teams ample game time in addition to the new focus on practice time. The all Yorkton format now gives coaches and players the benefit of working together and improving skills at a progressive rate rather than the typical model

of splitting teams up where the focus of development is sometimes lost to winning as teams key players often see added ice time in the spirit of competition. Hoffman also hopes this change will attract more kids into the game saying, “Obviously you want kids and parents first experiences with the sport to be as enjoyable as possible and with our talented group of coaches and parents and our new model hopefully we can entice

a few more players and families into the sport we love.” The YNHL will run from now until spring and will be reviewed at the end of the season to see if the model will be brought into the long term picture or tweaks need to be made. For now, Yorkton is making an important leap into determining just what route to take in developing its next generation of hockey heroes at one of its most crucial developmental levels.

Rapid Fire Rants: November wrap up edition In honor of the 100th Grey Cup and what has been a jam packed November, Ruttig’s Rants: Rapid Fire Edition makes it’s triumphant return to close out the month. Let’s get it started. While on the topic of the 100th Grey Cup it was very hard for me to keep my eyeballs glued to what was a relatively boring game of football. Credit to the Toronto Argonauts defense for shutting down the Stampeders early and often, but I found myself tuning into Packers-Giants on TSN2 for most of the second half. As for the halftime show: Remember it is a football game, not a twelve year old pop concert. Goes without saying that Ricky Ray needs to be applauded for rejuvenating his career in leading the Argos and silencing many doubters who thought the veteran quarterback was past his time. He may have never had the statistical dominance that Damon Allen or Anthony Calvillo have had, but I am sure Ray will take his now three

Grey Cups in what will be a career we should praise more than we do, but we won’t. Also Kevin Glenn should be congratulated for coming back from the brink and leading the Stampeders to twelve wins and a Grey Cup berth. Yes his performance in the final was poor, but Glenn has battled hard throughout his CFL career and will likely never get back to the big game. Here is hoping he goes back to the Bombers in the offseason and keeps the starting role in this league he deserves. Extremely early odds for the 2013 Grey Cup in Regina have the Riders sitting at a +600 payout. If anyone is bold enough to think that the football gods will let that happen it is worth a look. A huge hand should go to the CFL for being classy and letting Taylor Field have one last Grey Cup in its dying years. The Riders need to make some improvements, if they want to be in their home Grey Cup, but like we saw with the Argos sometimes get-

Ruttig’s rants Column Chase Ruttig

ting hot at the right time is all it takes. One last Canadian football note: props go to Laval for winning yet another Vanier Cup in their rematch of last year’s classic with McMaster. The game was the most attended game in CIS history with only the 1989 Vanier Cup at the newly built SkyDome coming close. It is time for the CFL and Canada to embrace the college game and give our game a truly Canadian focus and reserve more roster spots for our homegrown talent. Turning the Canadian spirit sour after the Grey Cup was the NHL lock-

out saga adding an extra chapter as both sides have finally agreed to mediate. A three billion dollar company throwing away this much money is appalling and even if they return, it is going to be an empty season at best. Making things worse for hockey fans: the World Juniors are in Europe this year. Thank God Tim Hortons drive thru is open 24/7. We will all need it. It will be likely that staying up will be worth it as the NHL lockout will allow for a bumper crop of talent to play in one last tournament. Canada will however now be missing one of those stars as

Ryan Murray underwent surgery for a shoulder injury suffered during WHL action for the Everett Silvertips. His loss will be a huge blow in a year where Canada will be missing home ice advantage and Russia will be equally as strong with CHL and KHL talent. For those who really need their hockey fix and are getting ready for the aforementioned WJHC, Sportsnet’s Friday Night Hockey has been showing marquee talent across the CHL all season long. Has there ever been a team to play as good of games to start a season 3-11 like the Toronto Raptors have? Canada’s only team right now have found a way to make every game this year close save for the one early season blowout in Oklahoma City, but seem to find a new way to lose every night. Andrea Bargnani’s four point performance in their double OT loss to San Antonio Sunday might just be the final straw that gets the trade waters moving for the former number one pick. That stretch last year where he was one of the top five scorers in the league before his legs gave out seems like forever ago now and the always passionate Raptors fans are about to turn on him for good if he doesn’t turnaround fast. On a positive Raptors note, all of you who dismissed Jonas Valanciunas for being European when the Raptors selected him in the 2011 Draft, your apologies will be accepted at the door

after his big twenty plus point performance Sunday against the Spurs. Ed Davis also had a big game off the bench, further heating up the Bargnani animosity as Davis continues to get buried on the bench after continuing to improve and work hard with the limited minutes he is given. Shame goes to TSN for not using its college basketball rights and not showing the ACC vs. Big Ten Challenge this week. With multiple Top 25 matchups and Canadian content on Michigan as they take on NC State Canadian sports fans deserve better from the three letter network who stubbornly are taking their ball and going home without their crown jewel due to the lockout. College football down South will have a hot storyline as Notre Dame somehow, some way finished their season undefeated and will likely face one loss Alabama/Oregon in the National Championship Game. For all the controversy the no playoff format has created for the NCAA it should be credited for the fact that they have the most entertaining and important regular season in all of sports as one loss on any given Saturday can sink an entire state’s dream of a National Championship. Saints volleyball bows out at Provincials By CHASE RUTTIG N-R Writer The Saints Senior Boys Volleyball team competed at the SHSSA 4A Boys Provincial Championship over the weekend. The event was hosted at Nipawin’s L.P. Miller High School and their Central Park School The competition consisted of ten teams with two pools of five. Pool A featured defending provincial champion Oxbow, La Loche, Nipawin, Shaunavon and Esterhazy. While Sacred found themselves in Pool B which featured; Caronport, Birch Hills, Bigger and Osler in addition to the Saints. The Saints first match was against Caronport where the team came out strong leading the first set 16-5 and finally won 25-21. Caronport picked up the pace and won the next two sets 25-21 and 25-19 stealing a win that easily could have went the Saints way after they did the heavy lifting in winning the first set, but just couldn’t capitalize in sets two and three. Sacred bounced back and did a great job passing the ball to win in two straight sets 25-21 and 25-23 preventing the

three set loss from ruining their opening day at provincials. Friday’s action wrapped up with another three set match against Birch Hills. In the first set, the team came up just short losing 23-25. In the second set the team gained momentum after a strong hit down the line by Derek Marshall. Sacred eventually won the second set 25-19 but once again could not get the all important second set win and bowed out in the third set making Saturday morning’s fixture with Osler a must win to continue their provincial run. On Saturday, Sacred Heart played their final round robin match against Osler. In the first set Sacred Heart’s setter/power Jaedon Pellatt injured his knee in the set and had to leave the match. Pellat’s injury swung momentum as the Saints were rattled and lost the first set 22-25. The team regrouped and crushed Osler in the next two sets winning 25-6 and 25-16 to see their way into the next round facing off against Shaunavon in the 3rd. vs. 2nd matchup in quarterfinal action.

Harvest wrap up Cont. from Page 21.

However the Canadians showed why they are one of the league’s top teams as they answered the Harvest’s insurance marker with one of their own to make the game 2-1 with plenty of time remaining in the third period. A Canadians penalty late in the third looked like it would wrap things up, but a late shorthanded goal from Zach Zborosky tied the game and sent it into overtime where they Canadians finished the comeback and stole the extra point away from the Harvest. A 6-3 loss Tuesday night to the Notre Dame Hounds and Yorkton’s own and Prince George Cougars product Matt Kustra ended the Harvest’s unbeaten streak in regulation and kept them one point off of Swift Current and the Argo’s in the SMAAHL standings. The win also saw the Hounds climb to within one point of the Harvest in a race that sees five teams separated by just four points in the middle of the standings. The Harvest will look to rebound quick this weekend as they host the league’s final playoff team in Swift Current in Saturday/Sunday action at the FAA before going back to Wilcox to face the Argo’s next Wednesday in a very important run of games. Two wins this weekend would likely see the Harvest gain important footing in the points race while two losses would see the Harvest fall back down into the cellar and give the Legionnaires breathing space. A slow start has given the Harvest’s December a must win vibe, two very crucial games lay ahead and will determine the story for the club’s December stretch before Christmas. Win and the climb continues, lose and the return from the cellar resets only time will tell how the story goes.

The Saints struggled to control Shaunavon’s big middle hitter and was defeated in two close sets losing 23-25 and 18-25 putting them out of contention and a chance to play for a provincial medal. “This was Sacred

Heart’s second consecutive year at Provincials, and it was a great experience for the entire team,” says coach Curtis Moen. “The team played extremely hard and represented their school with class. We had a strong group of grade 12

Terriers roll to six straight with a victory Cont. from Page 21. Thomson answered the bell making several highlight reel saves in the period, but could not get the Terriers completely out of the hole as the Mils equalized shortly after Bourhis’ second penalty to send the game into the third level. Thomson saved 21 of 22 shots in the second period on his way to a 41 save performance in his best game of the season after a difficult stretch to November. A much tighter third period saw the Terriers press at the end to score a last minute goal, but could not find the mark. Sending the game into overtime and 3 on 3 action for the opening two minutes as Bourhis received a roughing after the whistle penalty after an after the whistle scrum with Melville’s Sean Aschim. Open play filled the overtime session and the Terriers once again controlled all of the late

scoring chances outshooting Melville 4-0 in the overtime session. Eventually it went to the shootout where two saves from Thomson and Derek Falloon and Tyler Giebel goals gave the Terriers the 2-1 win. The win streak was extended to six games on Tuesday night as the Terriers avenged their home loss to Estevan with a 4-1 victory backed by another solid netminding performance from Thomson who seems to have refound his form and is this week’s SJHL Goalie of the Week and could be good for back to back honors if his play holds up for the Terrier’s remaining two games. A home date with Battlefords Thursday and road action in Humboldt Sunday night wraps up the week for the Terriers as they look to extend their winning streak that has them keeping pace with the Hounds who are winners of ten of their last eleven games. The month of December will see the Terriers play six of their eight games in the friendly

confines of the Farrell Agencies Arena after a road filled November schedule and will give the Terriers a chance to pull away from the Sherwood Division pack provided the streaking Hounds cool off. The Hounds come into town December 18 in the final game before Christmas break for a meeting that should be circled on everyones calendar before Melville and the Terriers renew their annual holiday tradition December 30 and January 1 to round out December’s notable contests. In other Terriers news third string goaltender Conor Barrie was traded to the Pickering Panthers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. The move will free up a roster spot for the Terriers in addition to making the Terriers goaltending picture officially the one two tandem of Thomson and MacAuley unless another goalie is brought in during the coming weeks.
