After leading the Terriers to the Canalta Cup Final in 2011, losing to the La Ronge Ice Wolves in Game Seven Trent Cassan made no mistake behind the bench in his second return to the SJHL Final as a head coach as the Terriers bench boss leading the team to its first league title since the 2005-06 season. Cassan, who played his junior hockey with the Terriers was behind the bench for a Terriers team that finished with benchmarks of 51 wins and a home ice record that saw Yorkton lose just three games at Farrell Agencies Arena. When reflecting on the 2012-13 Terriers, Cassan says while there might have been more talented players on other teams in the league, this group of players were the best team he has ever coached. “I might have coached teams with more talent and we might no have been the team that had the most talented players in the league, but we had the best group of players I have ever worked with who were willing to work for each other and came together as a special team,” said Cassan at the Terriers Award Banquet. Cassan points out that the work of the rest of the Terriers staff was instrumental in the team’s success. General Manager Don Chesney, Assistant Coach Casey O’Brien, Assistant GM Gord Pritchard and Scouting Director Garry Carson were instrumental to the building and framing of the Terriers championship roster. Cassan especially highlighted his relationship with Chesney to his coaching success saying, “Don has been a huge help for me as a coach and a pleasure to work with and we both had the same vision and combined with the work of the rest of the staff and the players it resulted in success.” Cassan also mentions the tight knit staff is a blessing saying, “When you enjoy going to the rink everyday because you are working with great people it is that much easier to do your job.” Scout Garry Carson was given praise in finding the players that made the Terriers champions as the scout works tirelessly to find prospects for Cassan and Chesney. “Garry could probably tell you more about the players than anyone,” says Cassan. “He spends long
Trent Cassan
nights in cold rinks on the road to help us find new players and his hard work is a huge part of our success.” As for bringing a championship to Yorkton for the first time since 2006, the head coach says how special it was to bring a title run to a city he has deep roots in, playing with the Terriers from 2002 until 2004. “Yorkton being where I played my junior hockey and where I got a chance to be a coach it has been an extreme pleasure to work in this city and now bring it a championship. Cassan also says that Yorkton’s reputation of being a great hockey city has made it easy to build rosters around players who want to play in a good city with a contending franchise in the Terriers. Next season Cassan will be on the coaching staff for Canada West at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge, an opportunity fit for one of the best young coaches in Junior hockey. A long career rooted in Yorkton is continued by Cassan with an SJHL title. With a team that was built to contend for 2013/14 expect more good things from Cassan and company next season as the Terriers continue to succeed under their young bench boss.

Terriers show the bond between city and team By CHASE RUTTIG N-R Writer This season was my first covering the Yorkton Terriers, going into researching the team and covering and attending the preseason scrimmages, exhibition games and camps. I didn’t know what to expect. I knew that the Terriers had lost to the Melville Millionaires in the Sherwood playoffs the year before and that they were returning key players, but still there wasn’t anything that screamed out that the Terriers were going to win an SJHL Championship and I was relatively new to covering the team. Yet as the season moved along in the fall you started to sense that the Terriers group was a special one and one that had the hallmarks of a team that was going to be memorable. Their defense, which was undersized at the start of camp, got a huge boost in getting back Yorkton’s John Neibrandt a WHL Champion with the Kootenay Ice and Austin Bourhis from the Prince Albert Raiders to shore up their blueline and provide a physical presence. Tayler Thompson, who had injury problems and spent only partial time with the Terriers as a member of the Prince George Cougars, was back for a full season as was fellow former Cougar John Odgers. The Terriers began to get deeper and deeper as a roster and with that the season started to progress and signs started to emerge. From beating the streaking Flin Flon Bombers early in the season at the Farrell Agencies Arena to a shootout win over the Millionaires in the first Highway 10 Battle of the season after being eliminated by their rivals the spring before, the Terriers started to show that they were a contender in the SJHL and carried that through their three week long November road trip while they were kicked out of the FAA for the Harvest Showdown and despite some road woes were still right at the top of the Sherwood Division standings heading into the last game before the Christmas break where they would

scored two second period powerplay goals on League MVP Alex Wakaluk to lift the Terriers to the Division title. Melville had the league’s top two scorers as well as the MVP in net in Wakaluk, making the Terriers win that much sweeter and once again showing the value of a complete team. By the end of the game the crowd was all Yorkton, with “Go Terriers Go” chants at every whistle and faceoff taunting their rival fans as the crowd at Melville’s new arena was nearly a 50-50 split in Terriers and Millionaires
fans. That support trickled over into the Canalta Cup Final where the nearly two and a half hour drive to Humboldt did not deter the fans from filling up the two charter buses making the trip up or driving themselves to support their Terriers on the road. In the final the Terriers once again lacked the statistical numbers of the Broncos led by CJHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Hrynkiw, Joey Davies and former #1 WHL Bantam Draft Pick Alex Forsberg. The series between the Broncos would be a tight one, with the Terriers needing at least one win in Humboldt to take home advantage from the defending champion Broncos they would fall just short in Game One as Alex Forsberg’s OT winner would give Humboldt the win. Yet when Game Five rolled around with the series still tied
at 2-2 going back to Humboldt, the Terriers still knew they could win in Humboldt and win the series and in post game interviews that confidence was repeated again and again, “We know we can win in Humboldt,” was the mantra that was repeated countless of times after winning Game Four at the FAA and after two misses in Games One and Three the Terriers knew Game Five would be as good of a time as any as a win would give the Terriers a chance to close on home ice the following night. The fans knew it too, piling into the fan buses and making the trip up to Humboldt’s EPA Arena where they would be treated to one of the best games the SJHL has ever seen. Three overtimes. 50 saves from each goaltender and a Yorkton Terriers win from a tip in front of the net from hometown hero Jeremy Johnson sent Terriers players and fans back home for Game Six on Sunday night. In that Game Six the Terriers would come out roaring to a 3-0 lead. Four year veteran Nathan Murray would score his first of the playoffs in his final game at the Farrell Agencies Arena. Yet Humboldt came back and when Adam Antkowiak scored with under five minutes left to tie the game you could hear a pin drop at the FAA, but the Terriers didn’t give up. In the end a last minute hustle play from their captain Devon McMullen to get to the puck and put it on net after winning a 50/50 battle for a puck that trickled out to the slot led to Jeremy Johnson’s second game winner in two nights and the Terriers first title since 2006. Yet for nearly an hour after the game, you still couldn’t find a seat at the FAA as the fans stayed to witness their team lift the cup. After the win the Terriers and their captain Devon McMullen showed why they were champions, when initially given credit for the goal, McMullen made sure to let everyone know that his teammate and last year forward Jeremy Johnson tipped in the winner. Building a championship team: Chesney reflects Don Chesney has been involved in the SJHL since he was a player for the Melville Millionaires in 1972, compiling an impressive resume as a coach and player in the Saskatchewan league. Chesney was an All-Star with the Millionaires in his playing days before becoming SJHL Coach of the Year with the now defunct Lebret franchise as well as in 2003 with the Terriers. Yet despite all of his success as a player and a coach as well as multiple trips to the SJHL Finals as a player with the Millionaires, as a coach and as a General Manager, Chesney had never been a part of an SJHL Championship winning team until this season when the Terriers dispatched Humboldt in six games. Chesney, a lifer of the SJHL had to wait 41 years to hoist his first ever SJHL title trophy when captain Devon McMullen handed the cup to the GM during the title celebration on the Farrell Agencies Arena ice. Chesney says this Terriers title came one year ahead of schedule as they were building to contend for 2013-14 but the group that they had came together and the young players they had developed early, resulting in success. “We had a deep roster this year, and even though we planned on next year being the big year, everyone came in and accepted their role and worked hard which in the end paid off with a championship” said Chesney when asked if he thought the Terriers would be a title winner this season. Trent Cassan was given a ton of credit from his General Manager as Chesney believes that his balance of the lines and the roster was crucial in developing the team concept and environment that was so pivotal to the teams success. “With the deep that roster that we
Congratulations Yorkton Terriers
had it put Trent in a difficult situation where he had to balance playing time and juggle the lines to make everyone happy and he did a great job of getting everyone to buy in to what we were selling and he is an extremely talented young coach who did a great job for us.” With only six guys leaving the championship roster next season as 20 year olds, Chesney believes that the returning core of Terriers players can contend for another title as they were built for the 2013-14 season. With the relationship and talent between coach and GM, you have to think that is a realistic goal. With one SJHL title under his belt, Chesney is thirsty for more next season.

Yorkton Terriers 2012 – 13 MVP: Brady Norrish
On a team as balanced as the 2012-13 Terriers it was going to be hard for Trent Cassan to single out just one player as Most Valuable Player. It was only fitting though that the Terrier who seemed to stand out the most amongst a group with so much parity in skill won the award. Brady Norrish was announced as the 2012-13 Terriers MVP. Norrish seemed to have the knack for receiving recognition throughout the 2012-13 season racking up multiple SJHL Defensemen of the Week and also receiving Defensemen of the Month honors. In the playoffs he was Co-SJHL Playoff MVP alongside Dawson MacAuley. In the Western Canada Cup he was Top Defensemen of the tournament as well as being on the All-Western Canada Cup team. Despite being deserving of the accolades, he posted seven goals and 25 assists in the regular season and turned his game up another notch in the playoffs with six goals and five assists Norrish said he didn’t expect all of the accolades he received going into 2012/13. “To be honest all of this is unexpected for me,” he says adding he doesn’t really even focus on personal achievements. “I just take everything one game at a time and hope to help the team win so I am blown away by the amount of awards I have managed to win
Congratulations Yorkton Terriers
this season.” On winning a title this season, Norrish says the team coming together was the key. “Everyone worked as hard as they could and filled whatever role coach Trent asked us to fill, blocking shots, hitting hard and doing whatever it took to win and it paid off.” Norrish also says, “He couldn’t have asked for better teammates.” Norrish along with his twin brother Chase is one of the smallest Terriers on the ice, but he is blessed with incredible skating and puck handling skill as well as the drive to do whatever it takes to win, Norrish grew into one of the Terriers most counted on offensive talents as well as one of their best defenders. That carried over into Nanaimo, where despite the Terriers falling one goal short of the Royal Bank Cup were one of the more strong defensive teams eventually holding the Brooks Bandits to just one goal in the final qualification game of the tournament. The 1993 born Norrish will be back for his last Junior season in Yorkton, something that he relishes. “It was special to win a title with a great group of teammates and now that we all know how that feels the guys that are returning all want to make that happen again so the next year should be a good one,” he concludes.

McMullen leads Terriers to the SJHL title After being a part of the Terriers team that lost to the La Ronge Ice Wolves in Game Seven of the SJHL Finals in his earlier seasons with the Terriers, Devon McMullen got over the hump in 2012/13 as captain of the Terriers lifting the Canalta Cup. The initial sting of losing the final and then their playoff exit last season to the Millionaires made it that much sweeter for the captain. “We got there a couple of years ago and lost in Game Seven then losing to Melville last season made it that much more special to win a title this year, especially with some great teammates I have played with being in their last season, he says. As for his role as a Captain McMullen said that having a focused group helped him out, “We all kind of were already focused and ready to do whatever it took to win so I mainly just helped out by doing whatever extra I could to make sure the guys were all ready and did whatever it took to help us win. McMullen, who received the team’s Top Defenseman award, registered just three goals and 11 assists and four goals and two assists in the playoffs, but his role on the team is valued immensely by Trent Cassan who mentioned that McMullen’s skill at doing the little things and stepping up in a timely fashion is what makes him a leader saying, “He is always getting in the shooting lanes to block shots or
laying the body and has came up at big times for us all season. In the Western Canada Cup, McMullen scored a huge late third period goal in the opening game of the tournament to help lead the Terriers to a 4-3 comeback victory over the host Clippers, showing the offensive flair that despite only having seven goals during the SJHL season, is a huge part of the small, speedy blueliner’s game. McMullen did not come up any bigger than in Game Six of the Canalta Cup Final where his shot from the slot deflected off Jeremy Johnson and in to give the Terriers a 4-3 lead in the final minute of the third period. His leadership qualities were most evident in the postgame interview afterwards where McMullen made sure that his teammate got all the credit for the goal despite some confusion on if the puck deflected off Johnson or not. McMullen will more than likely be back for his last junior season with the Terriers next year and said as for expectations for next year he is just going to take some time to enjoy the moment before getting focused on 2013/14. “Right now I am just going to enjoy celebrating and finishing off the year with the guys before we all get ready for training for next season, but we have a lot of returning players coming back and even though we are losing six great teammates we should be coming back just as strong in the fall, closes McMullen.

YORKTON TERRIERS SPECIAL EDITION - Thursday, May 16, 2013 - Page 11
A season of success: Terrier club president
The 2012-13 season was a successful one for the Terriers hockey club on the ice and in the board room as President Lyle Walsh saw the Terriers win a Canalta Cup while the board initiated two new projects to bring in funds for the team that saw increased profits with their Seed to Score program and the new 50/50 technology brought into the Farrell Agencies Arena. That combined with the attendance success of a championship run made the 2012/13 a season to remember for Walsh and the Terriers. “We had some beginners luck with the first crop of our Seed to Score program and the farming community stepped up tremedously in helping us with that, says Walsh. “Then despite my concerns of the cost of installing a new program our electronic 50/50 program has increased the enjoyment of our 50/50 lottery at Terrier home games for our fans as well as bringing in record pots for the team while leaving some
fans extremely happy at the end of games after winning some nice jackpots at the Farrell Agencies Arena which was a help fundraising wise. Walsh gives credit to the front office staff and the players for all the hard work they put into the 2012-13 season saying, “The work of Trent (Cassan) and Don (Chesney) and the rest of the coaching staff as well as the players has lifted us to the promised land and has given us the championship the City of Yorkton and our fans deserve. He also thanks all of the billets, volunteers and fellow board directors on the hard work they do day to day to ensure that the organization runs smoothly and that the Terriers season is always a success. Walsh says Don, Trent and assistant coach Casey O’Brien are going to be there to help the Terriers in 2013-14, mentioning that Casey and Trent have been invited to coach at various tournaments next
fall which will take a couple of weeks of their time away from the Terriers early on in their SJHL regular season. Lastly, Walsh says a big thank you to the City of Yorkton. “The City of Yorkton has always been there for us, whether it is with their wallets in coming out to the rink, or being a billet parent, a volunteer, or just supporting their team Yorkton has created an atmosphere in the city that has made our franchise one of the most sought after locations for young aspiring SJHL players and for that we thank you.
Terriers: history in the making Con’t from Page 3.
That selflessness and commitment to the team over personal glory is what made the 2012/13 Terriers an unforgettable team. Blessed with homegrown talent in the Johnson brothers, Dylan and Jeremy who both contributed to huge series clinching playoff moments and a handful of other players who spent their minor hockey careers in the Yorkton area including Kale Thomson, John Neibrandt and Tayler Thompson, the Terriers team embraced the city of Yorkton and the city of Yorkton embraced them back. When the Terriers were headed out to Nanaimo for the Western Canada Cup the city sent them off in style with a pep rally that nearly 1000 people made it out to attend. When they were playing in Nanaimo, often during the middle of the day during the week. Fans made sure to tune into the radio or sneak out for lunch at one of the sportsbars showing the game to catch their team. Even though they fell one game short of the Royal Bank Cup, this was a Terriers season that will be looked upon as one of the best Yorkton has ever seen. 51 wins. Just two regulation losses at home. Their first Canalta Cup since 2006. The 2012-13 Terriers gave Yorkton something to cheer about and the city rallied to support them, which is what sports is all about. As a reporter I don’t cheer for a specific team or result as part of the job, but being from Yorkton it was an honor to fol-
low a team that I cheered for as a child, watching the Terriers team that went to the Royal Bank Cup and won titles up until 2005-06. Watching the city come together to fill the FAA to full capacity for Game Six of the Canalta Cup Final was something I will never forget and being on the ice when the cup was presented to the players and to the city was one of the best moments of my short time working and covering sports in Yorkton. Often as a city we can forget to take time to support and be proud of those who represent who we are and what we stand for as a community. It is something that happens in every city, often life moves too fast and too many things happen to really take time to truly appreciate everything that goes on in a community. While sports are not for everyone and more things go on in life outside of the walls of the athletic field, they have the tendency to bring people together and show the bond inside of a community. The Yorkton Terriers showed that this season. Whether it was the bond between the fans and the players making the FAA the toughest place to play in the SJHL. Or a business putting a simple “Go Terriers Go sign on their window, the support between the community and the team was evident. While the season is over and players will go back home, with six 1992 born players ending their junior hockey careers the memories will live on. The 2012-13 The Terriers will go down in history and it was an honor to capture it for them.
Congratulations to the Yorkton Terriers on a great season! ÂŽ

The Terriers: in Yorkton, the name means hockey (www.yorktonterriers.com – Daniel Fink)
The Yorkton Terrier name has been associated with hockey in Yorkton for much of the 20th century. Before that, the senior Terriers played great hockey in the days when the best senior team in Canada would often represent the country in the Olympics, and when the players were often former NHLers who had completed their careers in the tough six-team pro league. In the winter of 1972, the senior Prairie Hockey League was on its last legs, and that became the catalyst for the birth of the Yorkton Terrier Junior A team. Because the PHL was on the verge of folding, the executive of the Yorkton Terrier senior organization changed its name to the Yorkton Terrier Hockey Club paving the way for adding the word “Junior”. The annual meeting in the summer of 1972 agreed to send an application to the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey League for membership in the 1972-1973 season. The new executive under president Jim Caudle was charged with the responsibility of bringing Junior A hockey to Yorkton. On June 25, 1972, the Yorkton Terriers officially became part of the SAJHL, as the league expanded for the third consecutive year. The Terriers became part of the Northern Division with the Melville Millionaires, Humboldt Broncos, Saskatoon Olympics and Prince Albert Raiders. Gerry James, who had
played senior hockey in Yorkton in the previous years after both a distinguished hockey career with the Toronto Maple Leafs and a CFL football career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, was recruited as the first coach. Jerry Bulitz, another senior Terrier, served as general manager. The first official Terrier goal in league play was scored
by Brian Lauder, assisted by Clayton Pachal only a minute into the first period of the first game against the Melville Millionaires, which was to set the tone for a Highway 10 rivalry that continues to this day. The first decade playing in the SAJHL was challenging for the Yorkton Terriers. It wasn’t until 1983 that the
Way to Go Yorkton Terriers
team, then under the private ownership of Jerry James, won the league title. The 1982-1983 season fulfilled its promise. Along the way to the league championship, the Terriers established an unbelievable feat, winning 31 of 32 home games. They set a new league record of 464 goals surpassing the Prince Albert Raiders
1981-82 record of 454 goals. Darrell Spelay completed a fourth season as a 50-goal scorer and set a new scoring record of 401 points. In 1983-84, the Terriers once again became a community-owned organization after a short five-month tenure under new private ownership. The 1980s brought many challenges, along with memorable events such as the 1987-88 league final against the Notre Dame Hounds. Under Dennis Polonich, the Terriers were eliminated in an action-packed final series. The Hounds went on to win the Centennial Cup national championship with 14 midget-aged players. The Terriers returned to national prominence in 199091 and 1995-96 by representing the SJHL at the Centennial Cup in Sudbury, Ontario and Melfort, Saskatchewan. Celebrating the team’s 25th anniversary in 1997, the Yorkton Terrier organization moved into its next quarter century by securing the Royal Bank Cup tournament for May, 1999. When that event rolled around, Terrier hockey fans witnessed the best-ever Royal Bank Cup as the Terriers finished second in the round robin before losing the semifinal in double overtime. The Terrier past has been exciting and colorful, and thanks to the continuing hard work of dedicated volunteers and the support of the community, the future looks promising. In Yorkton, the name Terriers means hockey, and both the team and the sport are an integral part of the community fabric.
