HELLO SALVE

Find your feet this year… Give It A Go is back and we want to make this year the biggest and best year of your university experience. Whether you’re a fresher or final year, undergrad or postgrad, home or international student, we want everyone to get the most that they can out of their university experience. This booklet is crammed with ideas to help you make the most out of every part of uni life. With societies, sports clubs, volunteering groups, Careers, Enterprise and a whole host of other student and university groups running sessions to help you settle in, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to trying something new. We know that you’re not going to have time to try everything this term that’s why we’ll also be around in Spring and Summer! If there’s anything you want to see then get in touch. Ballroom and Latin Taster with DanceSport Thurs 13th Oct, Hendrix Hall 8.00pm-11.00pm Ballroom and Latin dancing catered for mixed abilities! No partner required! Just turn up, learn some steps and have fun! This session costs just £1 and is Strictly open for all!

Looking Glass Taster Editorial Meeting Tues 1st Nov, FR Leavis Room (above Hendrix Hall) 6.00pm-7.30pm Love reading? Read and discuss creative writing submissions in this informal, friendly environment before giving the writers some feedback...biscuits will be provided!

Samba Taster Session Sun 13th Nov, E/058 (Music Department) 3.00pm-5.00pm Did you enjoy the carnival atmosphere surrounding Rio 2016? If so, Samba York may be just right for you! Beginners and seasoned sambastas are welcome. There’s no need to be able to read music simply choose your instrument and you will be a pro in no time!

Yoga, Meditation and Self Defense with Lishi Wushu Fri 11th Nov, Derwent Squash Courts 12.00pm-2.00pm The stresses of term getting a bit much? Get away from it all with this session that helps you relax and kick ass too when you need it!

Week 2 X-men Apocalypse (12A) Mon 3rd Oct If you missed this summer blockbuster, now’s your chance to get your hands on the latest installment in the X-Men franchise!

Week 3 Suicide Squad (15) Thurs 13th Oct This was a huge blockbuster hit this summer and now it’s coming to York for a showing on Thursday AND Friday!

Week 4 Captain America: Civil War (12A) Fri 21st Oct Captain America is back and bigger than ever. Loved the other two films? You’ll definitely enjoy this one!

Week 7 The Magnificent Seven (12A) Thurs 10th Nov This remake of the classic Western movie is hotly anticipated - come and see it at a fraction of the cost of most commercial cinemas!

Week 8 10 Cloverfield Lane (12A) Fri 18th Nov Looking for something to make you jump? This is guaranteed to do the trick! Didn’t catch it in March? Catch it now!

Week 9 Now You See Me 2 (12A) Thurs 24th Nov The cast list on this thriller is incredible and, if the first film is anything to go by, this film is definitely one for the ‘must watch’ list.

Week 10 Bridget Jones’ Baby (TBC) Fri 2nd Dec Catch up with Bridget Jones in this brand new release. A perfect chance to spend some time with your flatmates before vacation starts!

At York, we do sport and we do sport well! Whatever your ability, you’re guaranteed to find a way to keep fit and with 64 sports clubs and countless other ways to get involved, there’s bound to be something for you. We’ve picked some of York’s top sports clubs for you to get involved with, along with sessions run by York Active. Have a look, find one that interests you and Give It A Go!

Week 2 Week 3 Tennis Tues 4th Oct, 1-3pm Tennis Courts Give tennis a go with UYTC! ALL standards are welcome, with beginner’s coaching, fun games, and casual competitions provided!

Cricket Tues 4th Oct, 4-6pm Sports Centre Main Hall Like dressing up in white and playing with balls? Then come down to the sports hall and give cricket a go! All welcome irrespective of your ability and experience.

Ultimate Frisbee Weds 5th Oct, 1.30-3.30pm 22 Acres Looking to get fit fast? Why not try this fast-paced, exciting sport!

Kendo Weds 12th Oct, 7-9pm Dance Studios Want to get to grips with this modern martial art? Come along to this session to find out more about this exciting combat sport!

VX Sun 16th Oct, 2-4pm Squash Courts You study in York and this rapidly expanding sport originated in Yorkshire - do you need any more motivation to take part?! Learn more about this unisex sport in a session designed for all abilities.


Weeks 3-10 All these sessions are run through York Active and cost just £1.50 to attend! Want to go to more than one session? Pay £5 for 5 sessions!

Badminton Monday, 4-5pm, Sports Centre This classic sport is huge at York and they’re looking for even more people to join them? Not sure how good you are? Give It A Go!

Sitting Volleyball Tuesday, 4.30-5.30pm, The Tent Fast paced fun, accessible to all!

Rush Hockey Tuesday, 5-6pm, JLD Pitch It’s hockey, but not as you know it!

Futsal Tuesday, 5.30-6.30pm, The Tent Want football with a few more tricks? Futsal is the sport for you!

Tag Rugby Tuesday, 6-7pm, JLD Pitch Quick-paced, no contact version of one of Britain’s favourite sports.

Women’s Football Saturday, 11am-12pm, JLD Pitch Everyone welcome, whether you’re a seasoned first team regular, or if you’ve never kicked a ball before!

Squash Saturday, 11am-12pm, Sports Centre Kick off your weekend in the most active way possible!

Netball Thursday, 4.30-5.30pm, The Tent Haven’t played netball since school? Don’t worry, York Active are here to help you get back in the game!

Basketball Thursday, 5.30-6.30pm, The Tent A short, sharp session to get you active!

Week 5

Taekwondo Thurs 27th Oct, 5-6pm Dance Studio Fancy learning some basic self defence? Then come along to the Taekwondo taster session, get active and get re-energised!

Week 6

Aikido Tues 8th Nov, 5-7pm Derwent Squash Courts Already tried martial arts, but haven’t found one that you’re interested in? Why not try this non-competitive, non-violent Japanese sport?

Archery Sat 12th Nov, 11am-1pm Sports Centre Main Hall If you haven’t managed to check out the Sports Centre on Hes West so far, head over today... and while you’re there, check in with the Archery team. Warning: could get competitive if you’re going with friends!


RAG and Volunteering are massive parts of life at York and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and give something back. With 14 volunteering projects and tons of fundraising opportunities to get on board with, why not check out some of these opportunities and see if anything takes your fancy? Remember that RAG Week is happening from 31st October, so stay tuned for plans and updates!

Fill Bellies, Not Bins Thurs 6th Oct, YourSpace 3.00pm-5.00pm Come to our event to enjoy some good healthy surplus food and marvelous company - all on a pay as you feel basis!

World Homeless Day Event Sat 8th Oct, Parliament Street, City Centre 10.00am-4.00pm Help SASH to mark World Homeless Day on October 8th by raising awareness of the hidden problem of youth homelessness. They need as many volunteers as possible to help to give this event a real impact so get involved!

Big Build Meeting Thurs 13th Oct, P/T/005 6.00pm-7.00pm Want to have the experience of a lifetime and raise thousands of pounds for charity? Come along to this meeting to find out how you can head to Nepal to help areas affected by the 2015 earthquake.

Challenge Events Meeting Tues 18th Oct, YourSpace 6.00pm-8.00pm How does climbing Mount Kilimanjaro sound to you? Or trekking through the Amazon? If you could give either of these a go, head to this introductory meeting to find out how you could have an incredible experience.

Everybody knows that the YUSU bars and kitchens are massive social hubs on campus - York wouldn’t be the same without them. But did you also know that 95% of all YUSU Bars staff are also students at the University? These jobs are designed to fit around the student lifestyle while also making sure that people can afford to study at York. We’re putting on these sessions to help you land a job whilst you’re a student at York...take advantage of them!

At York, we offer a range of support to students who want to set up their own businesses. We also encourage students to develop enterprise as a mindset - a set of skills and values that will help you deal with tricky situations, and will often set you apart from others when applying for jobs!
