It’s Summer! The days are getting warmer, the nights are getting lighter and we’re back to top off your year with another massive range of activities and opportunities to help bust the stress of exam season and let you unwind in the best way possible. This term, it’s all about giving you short, sharp ways to escape exam revision and assessment prep and experience something a bit different. Don’t feel guilty about taking this time away, it will help you in the long term! Alongside all this stuff, we’ve got ace sessions from people like LFA, Careers and YUSU Bars to help you make the most out of your summer by finding work or helping you travel in a safer and more convenient way. Filmmaking with YSTV Sat 4th June, YSTV Studio (Opposite James G/020) 1pm-4pm Get away from exam stress by creating a short film in a short space of time - a good laugh and a fantastic way to learn new skills.

Tea and Coffee Every Tuesday, Derwent SCR 10.50am - 12.10pm Come along to help out at the Tea and Coffee volunteering group’s weekly coffee morning! Drink some tea and coffee, chat with members of the community and play a quick game of bingo to help make someone’s morning.

As a student at York, you gain a lot from the University and from the wider community...so why not give something back? RAG (Raising And Giving) and Volunteering play a key part in uni. By getting involved not only will you be giving something back and having fun, but you’ll also push yourself and will come away with something to put on your CV! RAG and Volunteering doesn’t need to be time consuming or hard work you can give as much time as you want and do whatever you want to do - even the smallest help will make all the difference. There are opportunities to cover everything from sporting feats to helping out in schools, so have a look and see if you’d like to give any of these opportunities a go!

Harmony Cafe Sat 16th April, St Aelred’s Community Centre 1.30pm-4pm Make somebody’s day a little brighter and head along to the Harmony Cafe for an afternoon helping the elderly get out and about and socialise. Sound like something you’d be interested in doing? Email mindsinmotion@ yusu.org!

Give Blood Mon 2nd May, James Dining Hall 10am-4pm No matter how stressful exam season gets, it’s important to remember that there are people in worse situations than you and that we should all help these people whenever possible. Giving blood is simple, easy to do and will go to help people who need it most.


Now that summer’s here you really have no excuse whatsoever to get active! Exercise is also a great exam season stress-buster so try out these sessions, get moving and Give It A Go! You can buy tickets for paid sessions from yusu.org/tickets.

Judo Sun 24th April, Derwent Squash Courts 6pm-8pm Learn how to throw people over your shoulder with the judo taster session. Great for fitness, confidence and self-defence.

Wakeboarding with YuWake Sat 16th April, Meet at James Reception 12pm-6pm Learn to walk on water in a beginner friendly environment! After this session, you’ll be qualified to take part in Roses 2016 if you want to so what are you waiting for? Ticket Price: £15

Sailing and Windsurfing Sat 16th April, Meet outside the Sports Centre 9am-5pm This session will be a fun session of sailing and/or windsurfing, with instructors on hand to teach anyone new to the sports, mini-races and a lot of fun!

Try-dive with YUSAC Thurs 19th May, Archbishop Holgate Swimming Pool 6.30pm-9pm Fancy giving SCUBA diving a go? Join the Sub-Aqua club for an underwater experience and top off your year in style!

What are Activators? Activators are weekly sports sessions designed entirely for beginners. Competition isn’t the aim - these sessions are all about getting involved and getting active. They run every week between Weeks 3 and 10 so you’ve got plenty of opportunities to get involved! Activators are a fantastic way to get into playing sport at York so if you like these sessions, why not try joining your College sports teams? If you really decide to get involved with sport at York, why not join one of the 64 sports teams? And while you’re at it, why not support your sports teams as they go head-to-head with Lancaster at Roses 2016?

Netball Tues, Sports Centre Main Hall 4pm-5pm Netball is one of the university’s most established clubs - that doesn’t mean that they’re not looking for new ways for you to get involved, though! If you haven’t played netball since school and want to give it another go, then this is the session for you. Each session costs £1.50 to attend.

Badminton Thurs, Sports Centre Main Hall 6pm-7pm Get active with these sessions from the Badminton club. They’re fast paced, fun and informal with no strings attached! Head on down, take part and Give It A Go!

Touch Rugby Fri, JLD Pitch 6pm-7pm Touch rugby is a fantastic way to keep active. It’s fast-paced, high tempo and no contact! This is the perfect session to attend if you want to build your skills up before trying rugby league or rugby union.
