HELLO SALVE

Give it a Go is all about seeing an opportunity and grabbing the chance. Whether you’re a fresher, postgrad, international or home student, we really hope you find something new and enjoy. In this booklet, you’ll find a huge range of student-led groups to Get Involved with, employability sessions to help you Go Develop and we want you to Be Social and join us and make friends on Viva trips around the UK. Give it a Go gives you the chance to try something at any time. If you don’t see anything you like now, don’t worry - we’ll be adding more sessions online and watch out for GIAG Week next term. SOCIETIES

Whether you’re looking for a cultural experience like Scottish reeling or you fancy a sing-a-long with the Glee Singers, there’s a wide range of societies to suit everyone’s taste. Face it, you’re going to end up joining at least one, so try them out with us first!

Week 1 Quidditch Taster Sun 1st Oct, 22 Acres 2pm-4pm An introduction to the real life sport of quidditch. You’ll learn about the different positions on pitch, the role of each ball and basic skills that are key to success in quidditch. Missed it? This session repeats on Sun 8th Oct, 2-4pm, 22 Acres.

Week 2 Board Games Night Mon 2nd Oct, G/0/20 8pm-Late Friendly space for people to play board games. All are welcome, even if you haven’t played one of our large selection of games before. Lishi Wushu Taster Tues 3rd Oct, James Hall 4pm-5pm Unwind, energise, get fitter, more supple and have fun Friendly classes, we delve into an ancient art - doing Forms, Qi Gong, Dao Yoga, Meditation and Self Defence Missed it? This session repeats on Tues, 17th Oct, 4-5pm, James Hall.

Scottish Reeling for Beginners Tues 3rd Oct, James Hall 8pm-10pm Come along and start learning how to reel! Our first session is open to complete beginners and old hands alike, and will teach you all the basics including spins, turns and dances. Technical Theatre - Introduction Session Weds 4th Oct, V/N/045 2:30pm-3:30pm We are a new society for anyone interested in getting involved in the lighting and sound for events across the university. This is an informal session where you can have a play with our equipment, speak to our committee and find out more about our society and doing tech for events around campus. Swing Dance Taster Weds 4th Oct, Hendrix Hall 8pm-9pm Swing dancing includes many different styles, including Lindy Hop and Charleston! Come join us for a fun lesson and learn what swing dancing is all about. No previous dance experience or partners required, just your lovely selves and your enthusiasm!!


International Food Night Thurs 5th Oct, More House Catholic Chaplaincy 7:30pm-9pm Come along to CaSSoc and bring some food from your home country or town! You don’t need to be Catholic or Christian to come along and share in this evening of food and friendship. Campfire Night with SAGGY Fri 6th Oct, Meet outside Nisa (Market Square) 7:30pm-Late Would you like to spend an evening singing songs and toasting marshmallows amongst lots of fun and friendly people? If so then come down to SAGGYs campfire!

Week 3 Craft Soc: Make a Dreamcatcher Mon 9th Oct, J/Q/002 6:30pm-8:30pm Join us and we’ll create dreamcatchers in our taster session. No experience necessary! Give It A Go - DJing Tues 10th Oct, YourSpace 7-9pm Come along for a chance to have a go at DJing - experienced DJs will be on hand to help and show everyone the ropes so previous experience is not necessarily required.

Malham Walk Sun 8th Oct, Meet outside RKC 8:45am-6pm Join outdoor society for a walk at Malham cove! We will be running 2 medium length (8-10km with a pub lunch halfway through) and 2 long walks (15km). Malham has stunning scenery and features Malham Cove - a huge limestone cliff! £7, Wear shoes suitable for walking.

Zeus and His Family Drama Weds 11th Oct, D/L/047 6:30pm-8pm Families are often full of drama. But when it comes to the Olympians… all bets are off. Join Greek & Cypriot Society for nectar (drinks) and ambrosia (snacks). All you need to do is show up and settle in for some fun in the world of Greek mythology. Singing & Conducting an Opera Chorus Thurs 12th Oct, E/106 (Music Dept.) 2pm-4pm OperaSoc invite you to have a go at conducting an opera chorus or get an idea of what it is like to sing in an opera chorus. This session is aimed at those who would like to audition for future shows with our society or would like some experience before pitching a show! HAZSoc Introduction to Nerfing Thurs 12th Oct , Vanbrugh Bowl 6pm-8pm Come along to CaSSoc and bring some food from your home country or town! You don’t need to be Catholic or Christian to come along and share in this evening of food and friendship.

Foundations of Latin & Ballroom Tues 10th Oct, Hendrix Hall 7:30pm-9pm This is your chance to learn Latin and Ballroom dances from a professional teacher who has competed on the professional Latin Circuit. Will you get a 7 from Len for your Waltz? Whether you’re a complete Ed Balls or have danced before, come along and Give Dancesport A Go!

CHMS Performance Taster Sat 14th Oct, Hendrix Hall 11am-3pm Itchy feet? Join CHMS for a studentled musical theatre workshop where we’ll make a literal song and dance about the start of the year! Wear clothes you can move in. Russian Film Night Sat 14th Oct, V/045 6pm-9pm The Russian Speaking Society invites you to our very first subtitled film night this year (voted for at the event)! There’ll be Russian and Eastern European snacks and beverages, and a mixer opportunity with our members. Absolutely everyone is welcome, regardless of your ability to speak the language. £2 Cost UNA York - Mini Model United Nations Conference Sat 14th Oct, D/L/037 10am-5pm C Join UNA York, a society recognised across the UK for excellence in debating and discussing international relations, for a fun one-day conference that will present different perspectives and teach you diplomatic skills. Bring a laptop, notebook and pen!

Samba Drumming Class Sun 15th Oct, E/058 (Music Dept.) 3pm-5pm We will be making noise and having fun whilst learning about the rhythms traditions of Brazilian Carnival Samba drumming- any and all abilities welcome! (Drums provided).


Week 4 Living Below the Line Challenge Mon 16th Oct YourSpace 8pm-10:30pm Join the International Development Society as they give you an introduction to who they are and what they stand for. You’ll also get briefing on the Living Below the Line Challenge.

Give Singing a Go with the York Glee Singers Weds 18th Oct, P/L/002 7pm-9pm Come along, tune up and sing with Glee Singers! All welcome, *no audition required* and good times guaranteed! We sing everything from Mika to Minchin, to Mozart, so there is something for everyone. Challenge.

Week 6 Doug of the Dead Tues 31st Oct, D/L/036 7-9pm We’ll be celebrating Halloween in true DougSoc style - dressed up, playing silly games, and having way too much fun! Expect party games and activities with a Halloween twist. Come along to meet some new people, and indulge your inner child. Wear fancy dress!

Week 2 Welcome Meeting and TV Studio Tour (YSTV) Thurs 5th Oct, G/N/020 & YSTV 6:45pm-8:45pm Come along to YSTV’s welcome meeting to try your hand in the studio, mess around in the control room and have a laugh with the Green Screen. PhotoSoc Lightpainting & Firewire Tues 3rd Oct, The Quiet Place 7pm-9pm Join us at Photosoc’s most popular event! Unleash your creativity with us through long-exposure photography of lights and firewire. All photographic abilities are welcome; we are happy to provide advice if you need it!

Week 3 Tabloid News and Journalism Fri 13th Oct, Grimston House (Vision office) 6pm-8pm Interested in journalism? Have a go at writing a news story, editing a page or writing your opinion piece. If you’ve got a different point of view, then Vision is the place for you.

SPORT CLUBS Week 2 Give VX a Go Thursday 5th Oct, York Sport Centre Squash Courts 7:30-8:30 Give the new and exciting sport of VX (Rock-it-Ball) a try! A mix between lacrosse and dodgeball, this fun and fast game is great for de-stressing in the clubs diverse environment. The session you’ll meet clubs members and get involved in the game format of V2 (1v1). Get your hands on Handball Weds 4th Oct, Sports Hall 8-10pm Whether you’ve been playing for years or haven’t even heard of handball before, the UoY Handball Club welcomes you to give one of UK’s fastest-growing sports a go in a fun and educative session that promises to leave you wanting for more. Darts - Newcomers Tournament Fri 6th Oct, Roger Kirk Centre 8pm-Late This tournament is for anyone that wants to give darts a try or get involved in the club.

Week 3 Softball Club Taster Mon 9th Oct, 22 Acres 4pm-5:30pm Our softball club aims to be as accessible as possible regardless of skill level. You’ll learn all you need to know to play a practice game at the end of the session.

Wakeboarding Give it a Go! Weds 11th Oct, North East Wakepark 12pm-6pm We’ll be heading to a cable wakeboarding centre for an exciting afternoon of wakeboarding. This event is perfect for beginners. Each rider gets their own cable and dedicated instructor. Bring a towel and swimming costume, transport, coaching and kit hire are included in the subsidised ticket cost. Limited spaces, Tickets - £10 @ yusu.org Tai Chi Chan Sat 14th Oct, Derwent Squash Courts 9pm-11pm Learn meditation exercises, qi gong (breathing), form work, and some pushing hands drills, which is a light self-defence exercise. All our activities are optional; people are welcome to stay for as much of the session as they wish.

Week 4 Fun Introduction to Taekwondo Weds 18th Oct, Dance Studio 5pm-6pm Come along and try the ancient Korean martial art of Taekwondo. We’ll cover the basics, including punching and kicking technique, as well as fitness work and self-defence - all taught by 7th Degree Black Belt Master Alan Sparks. Missed it? We’re running this session again, same place, same time on Weds 15th Nov,


Give Jiu Jitsu a Go Thurs 19th Oct, Dance Studio 6pm-8pm Ever wanted to try Jiu Jitsu but not had the chance? Wanted to learn a few self defence moves? Or just wanted a fun way to keep fit and meet new people? Then this session is for you.

Week 5 Give Kendo A Go Weds 25th Oct, Dance Studio 7pm-8pm Join us for a crash course in the art of Japanese fencing.

Week 6 Bouldering at Red Goat Weds 1st Nov, Red Goat Climbing Wall 2pm-4pm Come on down to Red Goat Climbing Wall to try out bouldering (climbing without ropes...) All abilities welcome! £10 cost Women’s Rugby Taster Sun 29th Oct, 22 Acres 2pm-4pm Join us for fun, action packed training, have a go at tackling, ball skills and fitness drills. Most people who join us have never played before, so don’t feel intimidated, we love to welcome new girls to our family!

RAG & VOLUNTEERING

Want to put your overflowing enthusiasm into good use? Whether you want to vamp up your CV or just love volunteering, you will be brightening up the day of so many people!

Week 2 Theatre in Schools Thurs 5th Oct, James Hall 3pm-5pm Theatre in Schools is an exciting volunteering project which runs drama workshops in local primary schools. In this session we will play drama games, talk about our programmes and answer any of your questions. Come along and see what we are all about!

Week 3 Introduction to OpenMinds Mon 9th Oct, V/045 5:30-6:30pm OpenMinds aims to reduce the stigma and increase awareness around mental health conditions by training our volunteers to go into secondary schools and deliver interactive workshops. Come down and meet committee members and learn what volunteering involves. Percussion Workshop with MEG Weds 11th Oct, Central Hall 2pm-3pm This session will involve largely African drumming and Samba, but may also include elements of our body percussion workshops! There will be opportunities to share warm up games, join in with the instruments and learn how we deliver sessions to school children.

Fancy Dress RAG Bucket Shake Details on GIAG Social Media Bring your nuttiest fancy dress and try out the most essential way of fundraising -- the infamous bucket shake! See how much money you can really raise in two hours! KEEN Interactive sports sessions Sun 15th Oct, Dance studio, York Sports Centre 1pm-2pm Get involved with KEEN York! We offer free interactive sports sessions for children who have Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities (3-11 years). Sessions include a range of activities including musical games and fitness focused sensory activities. Planting with Edible Uni Weds Weeks 4, 6, 8, Allotments (Check GIAG Social Media) 2pm-4pm Want to grow your own organic food and learn gardening basics? Please join us even if it’s just for half an hour. It is the perfect activity for releasing stress and doing something productive. No experience needed! Tools and gloves are provided.

Teach First – Ready, Steady, Teach! Week 5 - 23rd Oct, D/L/006 12:00-13:00 Do you have what it takes to teach against the clock? Please come and join us for our interactive “Ready, Steady, TEACH!” event. Whether you already have some teaching experience, or are interested in finding out more, this event will provide the opportunity to develop your teaching and presentation skills whilst working with qualified members of Teach First staff. Teach First – Lesson Planning Workshop Week 8 - 15th Nov, P/T/007 12:00-13:00 Prepare for teaching or school volunteering through this skill building session lead by education experts Teach First. Understand why teachers plan, what makes lessons effective and where to start when planning your own!
