All for sports, sports for all. 8

I work out ATHLETICS Laurier offers a very popular intramural program. In fact, last year more than 8,000 students participated in a variety of intramural sports to keep their bodies as active as their minds. With options as diverse as ultimate frisbee, squash and dodgeball, there’s a sport for everyone. Facilities Whether you’re a full- or part-time student, your OneCard acts as your athletics and recreation membership so there’s no need to pay monthly fees. With your OneCard, you will get access to some of the best facilities in the county. The newly updated Athletic Complex is a 20,000 sq.ft state-of-the-art fitness facility, complete with cardio and strength-training equipment. It also houses a triple-court gymnasium, physical therapy room, air-conditioned squash courts, an indoor climbing wall and many multi-purpose/fitness classrooms. The 50-metre pool has also been recently updated to offer a better swimming experience. Alumni Field is directly in front of the Athletic Complex and offers a full-sized, artificial surface, providing space in the middle of campus for students to engage in interuniversity and intramural sports as well as spontaneous play. laurierathletics.com Varsity sports If you are a competitive athlete, and want to be a part of the interuniversity program at Laurier, call the Hawk desk at 519.884.0710 x3803 for more information.

Moving to Waterloo K-W LIFE Kitchener-Waterloo (K-W) is a thriving, culturally diverse community, that is home to the largest Oktoberfest celebration this side of Munich and the birthplace of the world-renowned BlackBerry® smartphone. With a population of about 350,000, K-W is small enough to be safe, comfortable and easy to get around, yet big enough to provide most of the services expected of a large city – a great selection of restaurants, a symphony, live theatre, interesting shops, art galleries, parks and an efficient public transit system. We currently guarantee first-year students a spot in residence only when they’re coming directly from high school. However if you’re interested in living on campus, please contact the Residence Office to see if there’s space for you. wlu.ca/residence Living here Staff in the Residence Office are also available to assist students in finding appropriate off-campus housing. For more information, visit wlu.ca/residence and click on “Off-Campus Students.” Extra mustard, please Kitchener-Waterloo is a very student-friendly community, offering great value restaurants, shopping and entertainment. The list to the right contains a few popular spots, according to our students. All locations featured are within walking distance or a short bus ride from our Waterloo campus. Dining on campus For your convenience you can choose to purchase a meal plan, which is added to your OneCard, and allows you to dine at the Fresh Food Company in the main dining hall, as well as other food service outlets on campus. wlu.campusdish.com There are also some restaurants off campus that will accept your OneCard as payment. Money matters FINANCIAL SUPPORT Financial support is available to all students studying at Laurier through in-course scholarships, bursaries and other awards. Some are open to all senior students, while others are tied to a specific faculty or program. Be sure to visit the Student Awards website throughout your time at Laurier for a current list of available opportunities. OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) Roughly one half of all Laurier students are granted government loans through OSAP. Assistance is based on demonstrated financial need and offered in the form of repayable loans or free grants. Loans are interest-free as long as you remain a full-time student. osap.gov.on.ca Laurier Work Study Program This program provides on-campus, part-time work for full-time students. The maximum you may earn is $1,000 per four-month term. Apply through the Student Awards office for these in-demand positions. Other sources of income The Waterloo campus offers plenty of opportunity for part-time employment as a teaching assistant, residence don, computer analyst, telefundraiser or through the hundreds of food service opportunities right on campus. Laurier is also located in a thriving community with a healthy retail and service sector that offers plenty of employment opportunities throughout the year. Depending on your program, the choice to participate in co-op can be lucrative – both from a financial and personal growth standpoint.
