Cardboard Cities SIB Proposal for Colin, Belfast 2014

A child's favourite toy is a cardboard box -‐ imagine an entire city made from them! Young at Art Events is delighted to present their unique and wonderful Cardboard Cities project. Families are invited to come along and have a blast building their very own structures – houses, roads, skyscrapers, boats and much more to add to our very special cityscape made entirely from cardboard situated in unoccupied retail spaces throughout Northern Ireland. Cardboard Cities is an ever-‐changing installation/drop-‐in workshop created by artists Caragh O'Donnell and Sinead Breathnach Cashell. First developed in 2010 through work with architecture students and children, it has been inundated with families at every location and has now been enjoyed by thousands. Each child (and parent) takes part in building their own ... whatever they want! Hotels for mice, rocket launch pads, motorways, entire kitchens. The only limit is your imagination, all materials are supplied and no planning permission is required for this very special city.

This unique event appeals to all the family from toddlers to early teens and even parents as they are actively encouraged to join in with their children in building and adding to this city, giving a unique parent-‐child bonding experience. Not only is this workshop fun, it encourages children to think about towns and cities, to explore the ideas of planning and city scapes – allowing them to understand more about their own town or city as well as enabling their imaginations to go wild. They also gain an understanding of repurposing and reusing materials, something very important today with such pressures on our environment. Testimonials • • • • • •

Timings It will take approximately three to four days to install Cardboard Cities into a venue. In advance of opening to the public each day, event staff will arrive half an hour early to prepare the venue for opening. After the event has closed for the day, event staff will prepare the space again to reopen to the public. Normally Cardboard Cities would run over a period of a month – running for 2 days for 4 weeks. As part of the SIB launch in Colin YAAE would run Cardboard Cities for 8 full days in a row. Venue requirements Cardboard Cities takes all of the space available in the room/ venue it is situated in. It is suitable for spaces up to 50 feet long X 30 feet wide x 14 feet high. For a larger venue please speak with us so we can consider up-‐scaling the event. Cardboard Cities is not suitable for spaces smaller than 20 feet long X 15 feet wide X 8 feet tall. It is essential that there is adequate light for the public to move around, however, there is no requirement for special lighting or sound. Stage lighting could enhance the exhibition area. This is not essential. The venue is required to provide 10 chairs for the event and has responsibility for clearing and disposing of the material from the space after the event. Equipment/ Materials The walls and floor of the space are covered in cardboard. Corrugated cardboard is stapled on to the walls and thin cardboard is taped to the floor. Large structures are made from cardboard by artistis and brought into the space. Lines and tape marks, marking out roads and features, are drawn/ put in place before the exhibition is open to the public. Young at Art Events provide all materials for the duration of the event – giving the children and families cardboard, paper, tubes, cones, glue, pens, chalk and more to help them create their contribution to the city. The client only needs to supply heat, light and the venue itself. Young at Art Events – Floor 2 Cotton Court, 30 Waring Street Belfast.
