YOUNGEUN JOUNG Studying architecture has been a perfect fit for Youngeun, who has found it to be her passion. Her Masters education in Architecture and Urban-Planning has greatly prepared her for a successful career. She feels that being very deliberate and precise in her work are two of the best skills she has developed over the course of her studies. Joung’s sketching skill has consistently remained integral to her designs, as she prefers to sketch out the basic idea of the design before deconstructing it into what the site requires. This process leads the design and aesthetic choices which in turn influences designs from a schematic level. Youngeun believes that the character and texture of the building profoundly influences both built structures and quality of life. “Well-designed, engaging, and urban spaces form the foundation for healthy, vibrant communities and sustainable infrastructure.”

PRODUCE MARKET Benton Harbor, Michigan

In a collaborative effort with fellow student Victor Andino, this public market was designed for the owner of Benton Harbor Fruit Market Inc., Lee LaVanway. LaVanway requested that the team design a place where local residents could sell locally grown produce; a market that would entice the public to stop by, come back, and invite their friends. It was our goal to encourage social and economic diversity, ultimately enabling human scale activities to better exist and evolve.

This market is meant to be a destination, a symbol for where people meet. This project is to be part of something bigger, to be part of a classic story that people have forgotten in busy day-to-day life. This generation should be reminded that there is more to having a good life with meaningfully built environments. We hope for buyers and sellers to be reminded of that.

The Farmer’s Market is a structured in such a way that Farmers can easily sell their freshly harvested produce. Each truck is provided with a stall to display their wares. This market is designed for year round use, vendors can quickly and easily open their stall and sell their product. This largest of the buildings is designed to as the main market.

IGNITING WATER STREET Niles, Michigan

The Water Street project is a new development where people can relax and refresh their mind. This project provides spaces that encourage creativity and innovation that will serve many generations to come. This area was designed with flexibility to allow changes over time in order to sustain growth and continuation. The timeless design will ultimately encompass the past and the future.

VOLUNTARY WORK EXPERIENCE

SCHOOL ADDITION Palpa,Peru

Volunteered work for Architecture Missions Group, lead by Martin Smith, in the designing of a new school addition onto a Church, in Palpa Peru. The plan is for construction to begin in December of 2015. This school addition is for kindergarten students to high school students and provides one office, four classrooms, and two bathrooms. It is connected from the North to the South side of the church which easily connects to the original school located on the same property.

CHURCH ADDITION Santa Cruz, Bolivia

As one of the assistants with Architecture Missions Group,

very educational for all involved. Many materials and methods

a trip was planned to visit Santa Cruz, Bolivia to reconstruct

were used that are somewhat atypical to North American

orphanages and design a church addition. As a team with

practices, for example tying rebar together to form the roof

“AMG, 5 classrooms were designed with, a large Sabbath

trusses and beams. These methods seemed to be equally

gathering place, a kitchen, and two bathrooms. This trip was

compatible and much more cost effective.

LIBRARY PARKING LOT AS PLAZA Berrien Springs, Michigan

The Berrien Springs Public Library requested an updated parking lot design that will transform their space into a more welcoming and functional plaza. The space needed to be better utilized to fit more cars during the busiest times of the week. The Library Plaza is also to be used as a gathering place for village events and for local artists to showcase their work. They aim to better connect the community and to encompass the neighboring historic Courthouse Museum.

BARN PROJECT Berrien Springs, Michigan

It was the desire of this client to reimagine a barn as a gathering place, for both family gatherings during the holidays and for business meetings. The planning of the barn revolved around the idea of efficiency regarding function and family. This required an entrance that welcomes the guests and a kitchen that is down to earth, yet big enough for multiple people to work together. The client envisioned many layers of entertainment throughout the building while maintaining wide open spaces, especially the living room and dining room merging seamlessly. Each space within the barn was thoroughly thought out to eliminate chaos and reflect the peaceful woods surrounding the barn.
