UNDERSTANDING WHITEBOARDS IN COLLABORATIVE SETTINGS THE GOAL Having deeper understanding of whiteboard collaboration settings along with creating and testing whiteboard cultural probes
GETTING INFORMED Much of this research is applicable to our project and much of what we saw in our own observations was confirmed by the research. ... So what now?
DIGGING DEEPER We were able to confirm the given research results in our own observations. But we saw dimensions in collaboration that we couldn’t signify. We believe that understanding these dimensions will lead ACCO to finding hidden treasures.
1. Mass Writing
2. Representational Symbols
3. Constant Eating during the meeting
4. Using a laptop to explain the idea rather than a white board
5. Whiteboard is an analysis tool not a documenting tool
6. Whiteboard as a stage
DIMENSIONS After research analysis, we generated the Element of group collaboration. Each element identifies the whiteboard experience moments.
DIMENSIONS RADAR Later, we created the tool to help understand collaborative environment based on the elements.

CULTURAL PROBES “Probes will not reveal comprehensive information about them, but fragmentary clues about their lives and thoughts.” Gaver, Dunne and Pacenti
Cultural Probes are... • Evocative objects meant to illicit inspirational responses from people. • Embrace ambiguity and uncertainty. • Not objective but more of a projective method of assessment. • We don’t know what we’ll see until we see it.
PROBES VS. PROTOTYPES
PROTOTYPE
PROBE
Concerned with how actual prototype performs
Not concerned with performance but what behavior is brought about
Meant to illicit feedback to improve actual design
Meant to illicit feedback by inspiring users to freely explore and experiment
PURPOSE
Goal or task oriented
Exploration oriented, undirected and more free flowing
SOLUTION
A solution has been reached and designed
The solution has not yet revealed itself

DESIGNING PROBES We designed probes and its instructions. The probes have two versions: analog and digital. The digital version is for the company having more capabilities.

TILES
How does scale and modularity affect the dynamic between independent thinking (micro) and team thinking (macro)? The goal is to see if the ability to toggle between individual and team thinking within a team context leads to on-the-spot synthesis and encourages team collaboration and understanding.
Analog version
The team is presented with a tiled whiteboard as well additional individual tiles on the desktop. The group is encouraged to go about their meeting as they usually would and to utilize the tiles as they see fit. Team members should be debriefed soon after the experience for their thoughts on the introduction of the probe.
Digital version
Team members can demarcate with their finger or tool the content they would like to email and/ or save for reference. Team members should be debriefed soon after the experience for their thoughts on the introduction of the probe as well as two weeks later for insight into extension use.
WHITESPACE
How does the experience of being immersed in team work affect collaboration? Does a panoramic view of the work aid in group comprehension and recall? The goal is to see if using content as space assists in the productiveness of team meetings; aids in recall; and encourages widespread participation among all group members.
Analog version
A team is provided with large modular, reconfigurable whiteboard. Team members should be debriefed soon after the experience for their thoughts on the introduction of the probe.
Digital version
The whiteboard grows more luminous as more bodies gather round and participate. Conversely, the board grows dark as activity and interaction wane. Team members should be debriefed soon after the experience for their thoughts on the introduction of the probe.

SCALE MATTERS 1. Treated whiteboards like individual pieces of paper and not as smaller parts of a whole. 2. Participants are influenced by the scale of the surface, so they moved to smaller pens. 3. Wanted larger surfaces. COMMUNAL PROPERTY 1. Notebooks are personal objects whereas these whiteboards were communal.
PROBES IN THE WILD Products we use everyday send data back to companies. Companies use this data to learn and develop new products.
THE BIG IDEA ACCO could develop products that provide direct feedback. This feedback could be used to gain deeper insights and develop products to match those insights.
