very organism on Earth cannot live alone and needs many other organisms to rely on, for this they all need to interact with the sun, air, soil and water. This interaction is called an ecosystem. A biome is a large group of ecosystems. Biomes have similar weather, plants and animals. The world is split up into many biomes. Some of the major types of biomes are, tundra, marine, grasslands, forests, deserts and freshwater. Seventy-one percent of Earth’s surface is covered in water so the most common biomes are freshwater biomes. Freshwater biomes are mostly large communities of plants and animals around a body of water. These bodies of water have only one percent salt concentration. Freshwater biomes have many different seasons and temperatures. Towards the top it may be a different temperature and towards the bottom, different. Ponds, rivers, oceans and streams can be identified by their unique characteristics such as aquatic life, temperature, vegetation and how much water it holds. This type of biome is a home for fish, frogs, beavers, reptiles, ducks, turtles, otters, insects, crocodiles, catfish, dragonfly and crabs. These biomes also become home for many plants. Some well-known plants that are found there; water lilies, algae, duckweed, cattails, reed, mangroves and pickle-weed. Water lilies are a good example for such plants. They give shade and protection for fish in ponds and also provide a soft resting place for frogs and insects. Water lilies are both temperate and tropical. Some animals in this biome are extinct or endangered. Hippopotamus which is also known as “river horse, is found in rivers in Africa. It spends sixteen hours a day in freshwater, it has threat from poachers who kill for the ivory in their teeth. American crocodiles are another species that are threatened. In the past it was hunted by people for its skin and now it suffers as it slowly loses its wetland habitat. Manatees are mammals that live in rivers. The last known endangered species is Mekong Freshwater Stingray. The climate in freshwater biomes can be as low as two degrees Celsius in the winters to 24 degrees Celsius in summers. The location of a freshwater biome determines its climate. Most water humans drink and use comes from freshwater sources. The temperature in this biome also decreases as the water gets deeper. Humans also impact these biomes and ecosystems. Humans also depend on freshwater ecosystems for survival, but their impact on these waterways can be devastating. People can alter habitats or even destroy them by creating hydroelectric dams or irrigation projects. Dams create reservoirs of water and artificially limit the flow of water. This way people can 02

change and destroy the natural distribution of water. People also overuse the water we have available in these sources, which puts pressure on aquatic population, and also reduces the amount of space they have to live. People promote afforestation, this helps clean the air quality and makes life easier for animals, plants and humans. Humans also find ways to adapt to the artificial
environment they’ve created for themselves and other creatures. Humans use more machines to make their environment the way they want and to make it livable. They use air conditioning to make hot areas cool and central heating to make the cool hot. In return the environment affects them too. Freshwater biomes are very important for all living organisms. And thus it is our responsibility to save it and help it last for as long as it can. It is also our duty to keep all its organisms safe and secure. 03 Nation May 19, 2018

I found a little beetle; so that Beetle was his name, And I called him Alexander and he answered just the same. I put him in a match-box, and I kept him all the day ... And Nanny let my beetle out Yes, Nanny let my beetle out She went and let my beetle out And Beetle ran away.
Jumping Monkey
She said that she was sorry, and I really mustn’t mind, As there’s lots and lots of beetles which she’s certain we could find, If we looked about the garden for the holes where beetles hid And we’d get another match-box and write BEETLE on the lid.

She said she didn’t mean it, and I never said she did, She said she wanted matches and she just took off the lid, She said that she was sorry, but it’s difficult to catch An excited sort of beetle you’ve mistaken for a match.
We went to all the places which a beetle might be near, And we made the sort of noises which a beetle likes to hear, And I saw a kind of something, and I gave a sort of shout: “A beetle-house and Alexander Beetle coming out!” It was Alexander Beetle I’m as certain as can be, And he had a sort of look as if he thought it must be Me, And he had a sort of look as if he thought he ought to say: “I’m very very sorry that I tried to run away.” And Nanny’s very sorry too for you-know-what-she-did, And she’s writing ALEXANDER very blackly on the lid, So Nan and Me are friends, because it’s difficult to catch An excited Alexander you’ve mistaken for a match.
