ts queer that we’ve much relish to adopt the ‘ in vogue ‘ accessories than to modify the orthodox words of our books. You all might be familiar with Mr. Chips. God, that novel might had read by our grandparents too. That’s why, in stupor of it, most students are reluctant to open the book and rapt the stuff written a century ago. The radical people pay heed to bring in fashion, new games, shows and gadgets but not new stuff to syllabus. It is not that we have lack of good writings and words to add in books. It is only the slovenly attitude of authorities. Every student has different aptitude from the other. Most students don’t get what they want to know about in this conventional syllabus. Whom can they ascribe now.? This orthodox syllabus is impairing creativity in young minds. Their skills are engulfing, their interests are agitating and their abilities are disparaging. The students are doomed to learn the pages not to understand them or use the concept out of fantasy world. Another issue is that the Urdu literature is something out of vogue. The amorous poetry, backward stories and poor people’s lives; something which has nothing to do with modern concepts. There are many new writings in Urdu literature, the authorities can add ‘em in syllabus, apart from keeping a straight face. Now, sweet buds! It’s your duty to fall to work .This nation needs your new words. You keep abreast of current stock. Keep in mind that hardwork and aim go hand in hand.

saw him on a roadside, he was not much talkative but his concepts about life were very rational and positive. Five-year-old Khurram inspired me as true patriot and real ambassador of Pakistan. Although he was a tea boy on nearby hotel, most of the time I found him busy there. Interestingly he never attended school but he had strong desire to learn something new. Anyhow after noticing his interest in learning I offered him to teach basic curriculum. Every day I used to go to that particular hotel and taught

him. One day I found him in new green shirt on which a simple one-liner was written “Mein Pakistan hun” (I am Pakistan). I asked him about his new shirt he replied after smiling, “baji my mother stitched and embroidered this shirt for me because Pakistan lives in my heart , my attitude, actions , behavior towards others is true reflection of my beloved country.” “ Baji I want to represent my country through this slogan (mein Pakistan hoon). I am trying to be true ambassador of my country but building better image of our country is everyone’s responsibility. “Baji why we only portray Pakistan as terrorist state and always complain about problems, Pakistan is a land of peace, land of brave and beautiful people. We should also present good things before the world about our motherland. I was impressed by his thoughts and vision, now I was contented that our future is in safe hands.

Rhapsody of Eve (2018)

A success saved

R

Rhapsody of Eve, the play by Gulshan Majeed (Author/ Director) and Sabene Rizvi (Producer/Sound) was held in the auditorium of Beaconhouse School Liberty Campus Lahore. The play opened with 12-year-old Eve (Barza Usman) arguing with her Mother (Iqra Nayab), on her objection to Eve’s right to go outside to play in the rain. The mother was afraid of Djinn, who worshipped Satan. The male Djinn performed under the rainbow, and objected to human’s sight when they danced in the rain. Eve cheated on her mother, and watched Djinn’s dance. Djinn saw her. As she tried to run away, they captured her scarf. They brought it to her mother and demanded Eve sacrificed her life to save her family from Djinn’s anger. When Eve returned, the mother showed her the scarf and gave her the dagger to kill herself and fulfill Djinn’s demand. Eve cried, asking for forgiveness. The mother suggested her to seek Djinn’s forgiveness a hundred times, and pray that he accepts it as ‘an alternate’ which they normally don’t. Rhapsody of Eve also reflected on the troubles of the war, and the fear of the cannibals. The people had no crops to eat as food. So, they ate each other to survive, saying, “There is nothing to eat here; so, we eat eachother,”waving, “The weak comes first”. The death danced at night. In the end, everyone died in the two cities. The world signed a peace treaty, and everyone danced on the bridge between Eve’s and cannibals’ city. The play was linked through Djinn, peach festival, old people’s death 12

celebrations, and two peace treaty dance scenes. The middle school dancers did an amazing job even with the little time span to learn and rehearse five different dances after school. The main dancer, Haniya Javed, had great posture and grip of her character throughout all five dances. The backup dancer, Rameen, did a spectacular job despite uncertainty being her handicap. My personal favorite dance was the one where Zara Maria Larsson’s lush life symphony was mixed with the Pakistani classic Kathak dance music. When the lyrics, lush life played, Hamna Babar and Rameen Khalid lead the backup dancers to perform western dance and when the eastern taal: doom Tanana played, Haniya Javed performed the Kathak dance. Rhapsody of Eve was allowed no budget except for the microphones, and lighting which was not provided by the school until after the play had started. Still the students managed the production. Students self-invested in all the props except for the Japanese kimonos and Chinese costumes that Majeed had arranged from his personal resources with great difficulty. The school also provided the auditorium. The production team, including the hair and makeup did a great job. Nothing was perfect yet parents and students greatly appreciated the performance and ignored minor technical ups and downs. Overall, the audience enjoyed and loved the performance of Rhapsody of Eve by middle school students. It felt as if they were all artists and they had perfected a masterpiece.

’ s t Poe r e n Cor Sigh of an acid attack victim By Khushbakht Imran I know that you flinch when you look at me; That you pity me. I wish I could tell u that your sympathetic expressions, They do not make me feel better– They only make me feel worse! I’m so sorry that you have to go through the pain of looking at me. I know that my scars, they make you gag. If I could only ask you for one thing, It would’ve been: to look at me once, just once, The way that you would look at her: The pretty girl. The one you could stare at for hours; I would not ask You to look at me For that long, of course. But just for a minute Or a second longer? Without shifting your eyes. Just once with a steady gaze; Just once without the pitiful eyes; Just once.. look at me And tell me The truth: That it won’t be alright–ever. Its been so long, And I’m tired of hearing all the lies! Just once tell me the truth; Give me the courage To face What’s to come and embrace what’s done. Just look at me for once and tell me the truth, That it won’t be alright but I’ll get used to it. Because I’m more than my scars. I wont let my past get the best of me.
