The Hirsch-Satrum Leadership Scholarship is named in honor of Phil Hirsch and K.J. Satrum who first opened the doors of Kilcawley Center in 1974 as the original administrative team. Phil was Kilcawley’s director, and his first hire was K.J. Satrum as assistant director. They enhanced and expanded student services and activities on campus.

This scholarship was established to recognize their commitment to and support of YSU’s student leaders. In the 1980s they instituted the original Arby’s Leadership Scholarship, in partnership with the campus food service vendor. The scholarship has been granted to campus leaders for nearly three decades.

Up to four students are awarded $600 toward their fall tuition.

IN TAFADZWA’S WORDS:

“I spent eighteen years of my life in Zimbabwe which is in Southern Africa, but I got accepted to YSU and I was so excited about it. It was difficult to leave my family. However, I had dreams and I wanted to come to college to make my dreams become a reality. When I got to campus, the first two people that I met were resident assistants. I had to stay isolated for fourteen days before I met other students or residents in person. The residents’ assistants made sure that I get food every single day. I would have struggled if the resident assistants had not been there to help me. I wanted to be able to do the same things for all international students who were to ever come to YSU and needed support or help.”

ADVISOR’S THOUGHTS:

“Tafadzwa has always done a tremendous job of connecting those within Housing to other departments and organizations on campus by planning of many events, including the International Student Organization’s Annual Prom Night and the African and Caribbean Student Union Week. Tafadzwa also connected her residents and our staff to these events, attesting to her capability to support those around her. This connection of Tafadzwa’s roles on campus has shown us that her ability to bring others together is astonishing by helping to educate others, as well as create a stronger sense of belonging within our community. Tafadzwa is dedicated to learning, growing, and becoming the best version of herself. Tafadzwa is a wonderful representative of not just the Office of Housing and Residence Life, but a remarkable representative of our institution as a whole.”
