Study abroad can take many different forms. Some programs offer a cultural immersion experience, consisting primarily of intensive language and culture training. Other programs offer a semester or a year of coursework at a foreign university taught in the language of that country, which is ideal for students who have achieved proficiency in another language. In addition to programs in the English-speaking world, YSU maintains partnerships with universities in Taiwan and Turkey that offer a wide range of courses taught in English, allowing students to take a combination of language training and other academic courses in their majors.

• Scholarships for Excellence—based on academic performance in high school. Among the ways you can add dimension to your education at YSU is by getting involved in the dozens of activities offered by Campus Recreation and Intramurals. At the Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center, you can climb the wall—all five stories, if you want—spin, jog, play racquetball, basketball, and ping pong, take a quiet break in the meditation room, do yoga, learn tai-chi, work out on the cardio and strength equipment, drop in at a fitness class or two, or go for a dip in the Olympic-size pool at nearby Beeghly Center. And that’s just on the inside. There’s also an outdoor competition-level track, tennis courts, and playing fields for soccer, softball, and baseball.

intramural & club sports Intramurals allow you to compete on an informal, friendly basis. It’s a great way to meet people— and stay in shape. YSU offers intramural competition on men’s, women’s, and co-rec teams. Volleyball, tennis, dodgeball, 8-ball, table tennis, badminton, frisbee, soccer— you can’t lose when you choose one of these. Club sports teams compete with other colleges and universities, but less formally, without NCAA regulations. Options here? Ice hockey, bowling, and lacrosse—and the option of starting your own club team.

Youngstown State University’s NCAA Div 1-A athletics program is large and successful, involving over 350 students and fielding 8 men’s and 10 women’s teams. In recent years, they have captured four Division 1 FCS national championships and many conference crowns. With great coaching, up-to-date equipment and facilities, enthusiastic fans, and outstanding academic records, YSU student athletes are a justifiably proud bunch. Why not join them?

Downtown offers a lively scene of watering holes and restaurants, live bands, street festivals, and the Covelli Centre (below), scene of major events and concerts. There’s also the DeYor Performing Arts Center that features concerts, traveling shows, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, as well as cutting-edge community theater at the Oakland Center for the Arts.
