CCM hosts active shooter forum in effort to raise awareness BY BRIAN CAPRIOLA News Editor

There have been roughly 156 mass public shootings recorded in the United States over the past 100 years, 84 of which occurred from 1990-2012, according to recent research conducted by The New York Times. With at least 40 mass public shooting incidents taking place on school campuses since 1990, County College of Morris is among the type of institutions at a seemingly high risk for active shooter situations, raising safety concerns among its students and faculty members. “I would think with all the mass acts of violence from last year that CCM would be more actively involved in educating [students] on what to do if a shooting were to happen here on campus,” said Ariel Almodovar, a first-year CCM student. “It seems like the mentality is these types of shootings probably won’t happen here, but in reality our safety is being compromised.” According to the campus security office at CCM, there is and has been a tactical response protocol implemented for some time, the contents of which can be found on the official college website. A survey conducted by The Youngtown Edition suggests ac-

Harvey Jackson, director of the department of public safety, speaks at the active shooter forum cessibility to the video is difficult. As more than 90 percent of the 50 CCM students polled said they could not find the video from their smartphone. Mass public shootings are incidents in which four or more victims are killed publicly with guns within 24 hours, as defined by the U.S. Department of Homeland

Security. Using information gathered from FBI Supplementary Homicide Reports, statistics indicate the seven mass public shootings in 2012 were the most since 1991, which had eight such shootings. “Mass shootings can happen at any time,” said Lt. Christopher Giuliani, a Randolph police officer with 18 years experience and

current liasson to CCM campus security. “It’s important to look at past tragedies and learn, make any adjustments necessary to improve safety at CCM. [Randolph police] feel the best thing to do is get as far away from the shooter as possible, while warning and keeping others away from the danger. If you can’t get out try

to hide, or in the worst case scenario that the shooter can not be avoided, fight for your life.” While there have been no documented shooting events in CCM history, a seminar to inform students and faculty of an active shooter threat was recently held at the Dragonetti auditorium, with roughly 200 people in attendance. “I don’t know if CCM is doing enough to prepare for an active shooter,” said David Aussiker, retired police officer in Morris County and current criminal justice professor at CCM. “There may be no such thing as enough preparation when an active shooter is involved, nothing is concrete because each situation is different.” Even the bravest students admit that when faced with an active shooter, options are limited and survival is the only goal. “I’d like to think I would fight back and try to disarm the shooter,” said Brett Reilly, an 18-year-old CCM student. “The fact of the matter is, as an unarmed student, the resources needed to defend against a person on a shooting rampage are not available. The smartest and only things to do are run and hide.”

CCM students react to killings caused by 4-year-olds BY KHUSHBU KAPADIA Editor in Chief

A 6-year-old boy is dead due to a shot fired by a 4-year-old friend on April 8. According to a CNN report, Brandon Holt, the 6-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9. Holt was outside playing near the unnamed 4-year-old’s home in Toms River, New Jersey when the accidental shooting occurred. The 4-year-old boy retrieved a gun from within his house, a .22-caliber rifle. He went outside and fired a shot striking Holt in the head. Some students at County College of Morris expressed their views on these tragic events. Erin McCormick, a music major, stands strongly on the notion that if guns are present in homes, they should be secured. “Guns should not be lying out. They should always be safely locked up,” McCormick said.

Hillary Schnatter, a criminal justice major, said that the parents should be responsible. “The parents are at blame for this one,” Schnatter said. “The gun should’ve been out of reach and locked away where the boy couldn’t reach it.”

Schnatter said that kids learn violence from video games and movies. “It’s everywhere, shows, movies and video games.” According to CNN, the uncle of Holt, Daniel Watkins, said the two boys were close friends. “It’s really difficult to deal with,” Watkins said. “This is something that shouldn’t

have happened. It’s horrible.” Further investigation of this tragic event is taking place by the Atlantic County prosecutor’s office team to determine whether charges will be filed in this case, and if so, against whom. Another fatal shooting took place in the United States involving a 4-year-old boy, however, this time in Tennessee, according to a CNN report. On April 7, the unnamed 4-yearold boy, shot Josephine Fanning dead with a loaded pistol. Deputy Daniel Fanning, the husband of Josephine Fanning, had guns in his bedroom for personal and professional use. Fanning and the boy, who was the deputy’s 4-year-old nephew, walked into the bedroom which had guns. The boy then picked up a loaded pistol from a bed, and with a single shot, Mrs. Fanning’s was dead. According to a CNN report, Deputy Fanning told his story in an e-mail he sent to CNN affiliate WKRN.

“The parents are at blame for this one. The gun should’ve been out of reach and locked away where the boy couldn’t reach it.” Hillary Schnatter CCM student Deputy Fanning’s email stated, “I would like the viewers to know that officers of Wilson County do not make a habit of leaving loaded guns simply lying around.” “The door to the room the accident happened in stays locked unless we were sleeping or we were in it,” Fanning wrote. “This was the only loaded gun in the house other than my duty weapon, which was locked away.”

Is it time for citizens of Uganda to say goodbye to miniskirts or the freedom to watch Beyonce’s extraordinary dance moves? The Anti-Pornography Bill could do just that. This bill, proposed in Uganda, has sparked contentious debate and protests around the world, including at the County College of Morris. According to the text of the bill, originally crafted by domestic policymakers in 2011, it “seeks to create the offence of pornography which has become an insidious social problem.” This Bill lists multiple qualifications for what constitutes as “pornography” under the law. In general, it defines pornography as behaviors, practices or forms of media that depict “a person engaged in explicit sexual activities or conduct” and/or “sexual parts of a person.” However, the proposed bill has been interpreted by multiple media outlets, such as the BBC, AOL, and The Huffington Post, to consist of a ban on miniskirts and sexually attractive celebrities, such as Beyonce Knowles, from appearing on television. This led to the creation of the Twitter hashtag #SaveTheMiniskirt, which has been used across the globe, according to The Telegraph, a British news group. “No one should tell you what to wear,” said Melissa Gamarra, a business administration major at CCM.

SGA and YOU! In recent months, the Student Government Association at County College of Morris has received a number of concerns regarding the overall safety of the Randolph campus from both students and faculty members. The SGA is pleased to report that many of these issues are being addressed. For example, members of the association were recently informed of one of the major public safety issues our campus is currently facing: the potholes that are scattered throughout campus roads are scheduled to be filled over the summer. The members of SGA have devoted time each week to discuss public safety issues during their meetings. In a previous meeting, Harvey Jackson, director of the department of public safety, came in to speak. One of the SGA’s main priorities toward the end of the spring 2013 semester is to ensure that these problems are being addressed by the Public Safety Committee and that we remain updated on their progress so that the information is relayed to fellow students. A second urgent public safety issue is the rising concern surrounding the college’s safety

While the bill could potentially ban miniskirts, that’s not all that the bill is intended to target. “Any attire which exposes intimate parts of the human body, especially areas that are of erotic function, are outlawed,” said Simon Lokodo, the ethics and integrity minister in Uganda, to The Guardian, a British newspaper. “Anything above the knee is outlawed. If a woman wears a miniskirt, we will arrest her.” Anyone found guilty could be fined or put in jail, according to The Guardian. Kelby Lee Bailey, a 20-year-old CCM student, said it seems like a “step back” in the country’s development. “We should embrace our bodies,” Bailey said. “We shouldn’t be ashamed.” Lokodo also told The Guardian that they would monitor the Internet to see who was watching pornographic material, in addition to banning many sexually explicit photos and television programs. “[Uganda] is a developing country and the law might not be strict with crime,” said Prianka Chohan, a 19-year-old respiratory therapy major. “They must have a good reason behind it.” According to New Vision, a news organization for Uganda, the bill is unnecessary because there are other forms of legislation being considered that cover some of the provisions proposed in the AntiPornography Bill. Regardless, the bill does not have a favorable public opinion and it seems unlikely that it will pass either way.

protocols for an active shooter situation. At the active shooter forum, a number of questions were raised about how exactly the situation would be handled. In a recent SGA meeting, even more questions and concerns were raised when SGA members were informed that there are currently only two hired officers that actively patrol the campus. “I’ve never personally felt unsafe on this campus,” said Marianna Borrero, president of SGA. Borrero later added that the growing concern for school public safety has made her rethink just how safe and prepared the campus is for any situation, particularly an active shooter. “My views on the campus being safe have changed,” Borrero said. “Construction is one thing, but active shooter is another.” There are clear construction hazards that can affect how an active shooter situation plays out. For example, there is much concern surrounding the locks on classroom and office doors and if they are functioning properly. At the same time there is concern surrounding the need of protection for doors with glass panels. There have been more than eight school shootings at education institutions around the country and schools all over the coun-

try are potential targets. The SGA feels that all necessary steps possible need to be taken to prevent any situation like those from happening at CCM. The members of the SGA are looking to students for support on this issue. As the issue gains momentum, the SGA will make sure to keep the student body informed. If any student has any other public safety matters not listed here, would like more information about these issues, or has concerns about the school’s active shooter procedures, the SGA’s student issue boxes are located around campus. These boxes serve as a direct line of communication between SGA members and all students on campus. -- Kelby Clark

Ambassadors Club begins to welcome class of 2015 BY BILL SANFILIPPO Contributor

As the semester comes to an end more and more students keep checking their mailbox for that acceptance letter.Soon after they graduate, the fear and nervousness of a new school, a new chapter, and a new experience begins for young college freshmen. The Ambassadors Club of County College of Morris helps calm the nerves of ambitious freshman and guides them through the beginning of their freshman year. “Our goal is to assist County College of Morris in whatever they need,” said Brielle Marinelli 19,president of the Ambassadors Club. “We are the representatives, faces, and volunteers of CCM.” The CCM’s Ambassadors Club is a select group of CCM students who work with the Division of Student Development and Enrollment Management in recruitment, retention and community relations. They serve as campus tour guides and gener-

ally promote campus life and student involvement at CCM. “We could not run the admissions office without this group,” Jessica Chambers. Ed.D. said, CCM’s Director of Admissions and faculty advisor for the CCM Ambassador’s Club. The club participates in many activities around campus. Members of the CCM Ambassadors Club lead prospective students on campus tours, serves as usher at the CCM student productions and musicals, volunteer at various campus events, and help at the annual open house event. The club also plans general student events like the 90’s cartoon showing party planned for the end of the semester. The club has been awarded several recognitions for the work they have done for CCM. Members are invited to attend the CCM Foundation Gala as they are the faces and “ambassadors” of CCM. The club meets on Thursday’s during college hour in the

admissions office located in the Student Community Center. Club officers also try to hold meetings on Wednesday’s to accommodate students who cannot make the general meeting scheduled for Thursday. The club has about 10 to 15 members and fluctuates between semesters according to Chambers. Students interested in becoming a part of the Ambassador’s Club may stop by the Office of Campus Life, the Admissions Office, or contact the president directly. Chambers also stated that being a member of the Ambassadors Club looks great on a resume when you transfer to a four year school. The club is gearing up to welcome prospective and new students. Members plan to participate at the open house event on April 20. They also plan to assist with new student orientations and other welcoming events for the class of 2015.

Public opinion mixed during troop withdrawal

BY BRIAN CAPRIOLA News Editor

As United States military forces continue to withdraw from Iraq after a nearly decade long presence, American public opinion on issues surrounding the Iraq War is generally mixed. The statistics from a recent Gallup study indicate a divide among Americans’ views, which are supported by conflicting opinions at County College of Morris “The decision to invade Iraq was made by elected government officials intent on protecting national security,” said Marine Pvt. Joel Nina, currently assigned as a Marine recruiter at CCM. “The

United States had reason to believe the safety of [American] citizens was being compromised, and therefore eliminating the threat in Iraq became our nation’s highest priority. I personally feel most goals of the Iraq War were accomplished.” According to a Pew Research Center survey, 46 percent of Americans said the U.S. had mostly succeeded in Iraq, while nearly 40 percent said the initial decision to use force was a mistake. Certain CCM students voiced strong negative opinions, specifically regarding the premise of the Iraq War, which George W. Bush, the president at the

time, attributed to Iraq’s intent of developing weapons of mass destruction. “Aren’t we still looking for weapons of mass destruction, or have we finally given up the search 10 years later,” said Melissa Stavious, a CCM student. “The war was a complete lie, with claims of WMD’s being used to scare the public into supporting it. On a scale from 1 to 10, if 10 is strongly agree with the Iraq War, I would be a negative 10.” Current Gallup Poll statistics suggest roughly half of Americans opposed the Iraq War, with 53 percent saying the war was a failure. Factions of CCM students are indecisive, mirroring the 5 percent of Americans who said they were inconclusive in the study. “The country felt really vulnerable after being attacked on 9/11, and I think we felt the need to respond or bring justice to those responsible,” said CCM student Nicole Dagnilli. “I’m not sure Iraq deserved the blame or if we should have been there for all these years, I am sure that the war ending is a good thing for both nations.” The Iraq War lasted nearly nine years and claimed the lives of more than 4,400 U.S. troops to date, according to a recent United Nations report. Federal analysts estimate that the total death toll including Iraqis, foreign troops and civilian contractors exceeds 162,000. “Bottom line is the troops need support of the American people when returning home,” Nina said. “Regardless if a person agrees or disagrees with the war, the sacrifices made by those who fought need to be recognized and appreciated.”

CCM students react to Texas school stabbing BY NICOLE DARRAH Entertainment Editor

A 20-year-old student at Lone Star College in Texas was arrested Tuesday, April 9 as a suspect in a mass stabbing. The attack, which occurred late Tuesday morning, took place on the school’s CyFair campus in Cypress, just northwest of Houston. Dylan Quick was identified as the suspect according to the Los Angeles Times. The community college campus, according to an LA Times report, was put on lockdown around 11 a.m. and remained closed for rest of the day. “Twelve of the victims were hospitalized with laceration injuries, including four who were taken to the hospital by helicopter,” the report stated. “Two declined

treatment at the scene.” Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia told reporters it was unclear what the suspect’s motive was, or what weapon he used in the attacks. “We do not know exactly what type of weapon was used other than to say that it is at this point an unknown instrument,” Garcia said. “We don’t know whether a knife or some other type of instrument.” Students at County College of Morris expressed their concerns after the news of the attacks broke. Some students found the situation to not only be intimidating but also feared it could happen close to home. “I find it scary how someone can injure 14 people before being stopped,” said Justin DeStefano, freshman at CCM. “This can hap-

pen anywhere, and similar to the news surrounding gun violence, it’s more than just guns. Violence like this can happen anywhere with anything.” Another student agreed, and thought that a rampage harming 14 people could happen so easily is alarming. “Shootings in general have been happening more and more often,” said CCM student, Courtney Maloney. “The fact that this took place at a community college just like ours is frightening. Although it could happen anywhere and at any type of college, I feel I can relate more because it’s a school like CCM.” Surprisingly, this isn’t the first attack that has happened at Lone Star College. Approximately a month after the Newtown shooting, in late January,

another shooting took place on the school’s North Harris campus. With three people wounded, the shooter was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. “It’s crazy, and I think schools need to evaluate their students,” said CCM freshman Steven Masi, about the fact that two attacks have taken place at this school within a matter of months. “Maybe something along the lines of a background check to make sure they’re mentally stable, and if they’re not then to provide those students with help.” The Houston Chronicle described the suspect, Quick, based on an online profile, as “solitary and uneasy in social situations... initially reluctant to participate.” There still remains no clear motive in this attack.

“The fact that this took place at a community college just like ours is frightening. Although it could happen anywhere and at any type of college, I feel I can relate more because it’s a school like CCM.”

College undergrads express support for marriage equality BY KATIE LONDONO Copy Editor

On March 26, a red photo with an equal sign appeared across Facebook. According to aol.com,“Facebookers Go Red to Support Marriage Equality” article, this photo is, “a new take on the Human Rights Campaign’s usual yellow and navy logo, turned red and white to represent love.” After hearing that the government of California may pass Proposition 8, American citizens began to show their support for same sex marriage through social media.

County College of Morris students expressed their take on marriage equality and it’s social media presence. Mark Burner a student at CCM said that he supports same sex marriage and that “everybody should be treated equally because that’s what America represents; equality and freedom.” “As soon as I saw the new HRC logo made to support marriage equality,” Burner said. “I changed my profile picture immediately to show my support.” Lauren Travlio said that she supports marriage equality and strongly believes that people should be allowed to marry

whoever they love. Travilo said that, by the government trying to ban same sex marriage; it is a repetition from years ago when “colored people” weren’t treated equally. She also said that many of her “Facebook friends” have changed their profile pictures to support marriage equality, including herself. “I think it’s awesome that so many young people support same sex marriage,” Travilo said. “And the fact that most of us will show our support and do whatever it takes to have everyone treated equally, is an amazing accomplishment.” According to Aol.com, “The photo

-HRC’s new logo- has been shared over 65,000 times since being uploaded and has garnered almost 20,000 likes.” Kelly Fittik said she was a bit “confused” at first when she saw peoples profile pictures changing on Facebook. Fittik decided to search as to what the logo meant and why it was rapidly spreading. After she read that the logo represented marriage equality, she decided to share it with her peers on social networks. “I’m so proud to be part of a generation that wants equality for everyone,” Fittik said. “It makes me very proud to be a young adult during this time.”
