A major change is coming to the virtual lives of County College of Morris students, faculty and staff. As of Jan. 13, 2014, students will be enabled to use one username and password to log into several virtual campus services. They include Blackboard, student email, WebAdvisor, the CCM wireless network and resources provided by the library. “Students are strongly encouraged to change their automatically generated passwords. Passwords must be at least eight characters in length. A web page will be provided to change passwords,” according to the CCM website. According to the college’s website, “passwords will automatically be changed to the letters ccm, followed by their sevendigit student identification number.” Most students could have been unaware of the significant upcoming change, but the students had strong opinions about it. Kevin Laudenbach, a music performance major, thought it was not the best idea. “People could hack in and look at all of your information with just one password,” Laudenbach said. “Now, at least you have different passwords.” He went on to state that forcing students to have different usernames and passwords for each resource provided some level of se-

curity for students. “I don’t use CCM websites that much,” said Lisa Sigurdardottir, a student at CCM. “It’s a big change… it’s very stressful to think about all of those things and keep them all straight.” Roy Stoll, culinary arts/restaurant management major, was undecided about the change. “What they are doing now is fine,” Stoll said. “I don’t have a problem with people creating their own password.” He went on to state that what they are doing come January 2014 is fine as well. “I don’t think its going to hurt security unless you tell someone your password,” he said. Sandra Cayavas, a nursing major, illustrated the issues she sees with Blackboard and the system as a whole. “Blackboard should be one click. You gotta go here and then here and then here … Sometimes I get confused on Blackboard,” Cayavas said. “When you have to schedule an exam, you have to have a totally different password… WebAdvisor is the password that I always forget.” Cayavas described the changes as “great” and “convenient.” “That’s awesome. I don’t remember half of mine. I have to write them all down,” said Paul Sharpe, landscape management and design major. “What are they going to do? Check my grades? Do my homework for me? Thanks.”

Nikolle Delgado, a current CCM student, was 8 years old when her mother, Monica Gomez, woke her up in the middle of the night to tell her she was taking Britanny, Nikolle’s younger sister, to the hospital because she had a high fever. Nikolle and her older sister Stephaney stayed up all night to hear if their 2-year-old baby sister was better. “I remember seven or eight doctors walking into the room after Britanny was checked,” Monica said. “I was so confused.” “Britanny’s actual doctor approached me and said she needed to be rushed to a different hospital immediately because they couldn’t treat her there.” Britanny was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue, such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the bloodstream, according to the National Cancer Institute. There were 48,610 new cases of leukemia in the U.S. this year alone. Britanny went through chemotherapy for approximately two years at Hackensack University Medical Center. “I was so young at the time, and it was so sad seeing my younger sister lose her hair and spend so much time at the hospital,” Delgado said. “Fortunately the chemo went well, and I was so glad my sister was cured.” When Delgado turned 11, her family moved to Madison, and Britanny was set to start kindergarten two weeks after the move. One afternoon, Britanny was experiencing stomach pains. Delgado and her family thought it could be a virus she contracted from another child. Please see CANCER on Page 5

Phi Theta Kappa hosts Educational Summit By Melissa Dellacato Managing Editor
County College of Morris’ Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Kappa chapter hosted an Educational Summit Friday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Six expert speakers focused on various aspects of America’s educational system, and what students can do to change it for the better. Richard Bahner, a professor at Kean University, discussed American and international education. “Our school systems are still very good, so [people from other countries are] coming here,” he said. “But what I’ve learned in my business is they used to come here and stay here and invest here. Now they’re coming here, learning here, and going home.” The amount of foreign students in the U.S. dropped from 23 percent to 16 percent in 2011, according to Bahner. “They are starting to realize that they can get an equal level of education someplace else,” he said. Bahner referenced the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Education Report from June which found that the U.S. ranks fifth in the attainment of a college degree among 25-64 year-olds, but only 12th when considering 25-34 year-olds. According to the report, 42 percent of American adults between the ages of 25 and 64 had a college degree. This is low when compared to countries such as Canada (51 percent) and Russia (54 percent). Dr. Dwight Smith, vice president of academic affairs at CCM, spoke about the No Child Left Behind Act. “What we find in this country is that there are performance gaps,” he said. “The No Child Left Behind [Act] as it indicates was a federal effort to try to address those issues that were hindering the achievements of all children in public education and private education.” The act sought to improve
academic achievement, lower school drop-out rates, and to train high quality teachers, among other things. “If the state needed support to improve student performance, the idea with No Child Left Behind was (1) the testing gave some indication of what the gap was and (2) there are funds available to try to address it,” he said. Smith also discussed testing and the common core state standards. “When we begin to compare our educational outcomes with
“Unfortunately, a college education is much more important now than it was when I went to college,” she said. “So even if college has become more expensive, it’s more important for students to get a college degree.” Schennum explained that one of the major reasons that tuition has been increasing at public universities is because state funding has been going down. Thus, the only way the university can afford to educate its students is to raise tuition. These high tuition rates have
dent of the student government association, spoke about athletic emphasis in academia. “We identify colleges with their mascots,” he said. Benefits to playing sports include building character, teamwork, and adding a competitive edge to college applications. However, athletics do have a down side. The funding for them is expensive, and they can cause students to prioritize sports over their academics, According to Herrera. “Division I schools spend more on athletics than education,”
“In many ways, our higher education system in the United States is in crisis ... The cost of going to college has become prohibitively expensive.” Dr. Jill Schennum Chairperson of the Department of Sociology, Economics and Anthropology other countries, at one point it was very positive. At this point we’re falling behind,” he said. “There are other countries who have high expectations for their students and those students are reaching the expectations.” In the 2014-2015 school year, a new test for high school juniors will be implemented called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). It is graded on a 5-point scale; if a student receives a 4 or 5, it indicates that he or she is college ready, according to Smith. Dr. Jill Schennum, chairperson of sociology, economics and anthropology, focused on the cost of education in America. “In many ways, our higher education system in the United States is in crisis,” she said. “The cost of going to college has become prohibitively expensive.” The average annual tuition cost for a 4-year institution was $22,000 in 2010. If college tuition had not gone up at such “astronomical” rates, it would be $8,000 a year, according to Schennum. Schennum said that even though tuition has been increasing, the ability for families to pay for college has not been going up at all.
forced students to take out more loans to fund their education. According to Schennum, there are more than a trillion dollars in student debt in U.S. An average student graduating from a 4-year school owes $30,000 in debt. Schennum describes student loan debt as a “massive” and “predatory debt.” There’s more student loan debt in the U.S. than there are in credit card debt or automobile debt. “Most families simply cannot afford to pay the kind of tuitions that are out there now,” she said. “It’s almost unavoidable to take out student loans for education.” A student in the audience asked Schennum why the “price tag” of America’s colleges is so high when compared to other countries. “One reason education is cheaper in other countries is because it’s considered to be a public good,” Schennum explained. “We see the reverse of that in the United States.” Other factors that contribute to high tuition rates include the expansion of support services, athletics and student amenities. After a short intermission that featured TEDTalks about education, Carlos Herrera, presi-
he said. “Athletics are dominating schools in terms of money.” Money is also going to athletes in the form of athletic scholarships. Herrera suggests creating a “higher standard for athletic scholarships” in order to put the focus more on education. “Colleges were started for educating, not really for playing sports,” he said. “We want to focus on education as a career for students.” Kelly Fitzpatrick, assistant professor of mathematics, described female education in America, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. She showed the audience a picture of Albert Einstein and asked them to identify him and explain what he’s famous for. As predicted, he was easily identifiable. She then showed a picture of Marie Curie and just one student was able to guess who she was. Curie was the first female to win a Nobel Prize in the field of physics. She later won a second Nobel Prize in chemistry. Yet only one student knew who she was by picture. Grace Hopper, a woman famous for her ideas in computer programming, was also not easily
recognizable. “Male role models are more recognizable than female role models in STEM fields,” Fitzpatrick concluded. “[However,] female role models all have one trait in common: they believed in what they were doing.” Fitzpatrick had an important suggestion to increase the amount of women in STEM fields. “One of the primary things for success to have females in those fields is for them to identify with role models,” she said. “Have female role models at the institutions in place ... [female students] need someone to help guide them.” The final speaker for the summit was Kari Hawkins, the lead coordinator of transfer services at CCM. She described employment opportunities and how to prepare for the workforce. “The importance of internships and other forms of experiential learning is very valuable,” she said. “You can’t get a job without experience. The internship is the answer.” Hawkins said 80 percent of jobs are achieved through the “hidden job market.” This means that companies are hiring people they know, friends of friends, or interns. To increase your marketability, you need to develop “soft skills.” Some major soft skills include teamwork, leadership, and communication, all of which you can start working on by joining clubs on campus or taking on responsibilities at a part-time job. Most importantly, ask yourself “What do I, as a Millennial, bring to the workforce?” “Millennials are picked on for poor work ethic and a need for constant feedback … challenge these ideas,” Hawkins said. “[You’re] seeking jobs that matter. You’re looking for that passion.”
CCM welcomes Psychology Club to campus By Jonathan Cook News Editor
County College of Morris welcomed a new club for students. The Student Government Association officially chartered the Psychology Club, on Oct. 5. Diego Arenas, a psychology and education major, pitched his future plans and goals as the president of the club, alongside his vice president, Angelique Onorati. “[What] we essentially want to do is bring the psychology world here to CCM,” Arenas said. “There’s no psychology basis for all students,” Arenas said. “There are obviously students interested in neuroscience or psychology than just us.” “We’re hoping to introduce more students to more events going on outside in the psychology world because it’s a very important field. It really influences everything.” With more than 60 members officially

signed up, the club is gaining momentum among the student body. Surveys were passed throughout psychology classes to gauge interest and see what students wanted from the club, according to Arenas. Many events are planned to introduce potential psychology majors to actual practice of the study. Trips to developmental centers for children and correctional centers for criminals are being arranged in the near future, according to Arenas. The club is “mainly for psychology,” but other majors in similar or connected
fields like education and criminal justice are encouraged to join. The two main highlights for future events include a visit to the Museum of Medical Oddities in Pennsylvania and hosting a live viewing party for open brain surgery said Arenas. The museum is famous for preserving Albert Einstein’s brain. “We’re going to hold an entire conference room with over 100 people to come in and view a live brain surgery happening in a hospital,” Arenas said. “We’ll have a giant screen projecting a live feed.”
Angelique Onorati, the vice president of the club, credited the idea as “completely” Diego’s. “He took great initiative, hard work, and leadership in creating Psychology Club,” Onorati said via an email conversation. Onorati said she hopes to work within the field of pediatric neurology, which is a specific area of psychology that the club will explore with its members. “I, like Diego, am interested in neurology and neuroscience,” Onorati said. “Psychology club is the ideal place to bring together students that are interested in this field.” Kathleen Connelly, a liberal arts major from Randolph, volunteered to become recording secretary of the club despite only taking one psychology class. “I like psychology a lot,” Connelly said. “I even like reading the book, even though I don’t read much.”

New research finds possible ways to prolong life By Alyson DeVries Contributor
The medical research industry has found new ways to possibly prolong life, according to a Pew Research Center publication released in August. They conducted surveys on the public’s outlook toward living longer than 100 years. According to the survey, 51 percent of the participants said more people living longer would be bad for society. “I wouldn’t want to live past 100,” said Lorraine Pepe, a sophomore at the County College of Morris. “After you’re that old, what more can you really do? If you have a disease especially, you’re not going to want to suffer that much longer from it.” Approximately 69 percent of the respondants stated that their ideal lifespan
would cease at around 79-100 years old. “I mean it’s great if other people want to live longer,” Pepe said. “Everyone might not have a chance at receiving it either; that will depend on the cost and effectiveness of it.” Only 24 percent of adults say that they have complete confidence in the new medicines that are tested carefully before being introduced to the survey. Forty-one percent say that present day medical advances cause as many problems as they are trying to fix. “I would want to live past 100,” said Harsha Mirchandani, a CCM student. “I love to help people and having more time would give me a better chance to help more people. I have a lot I want to do and accomplish in life, and it will give me more time to do everything I want to.” A major question in this research is if
everyone will have access to this medical breakthrough if and when it comes out. A whopping 79 percent of people who were included in the survey believe that if you want to take part in something like this, you should have the opportunity to. It should not only be available to the wealthy. “I don’t think that everyone will be able to have access,” Mirchandani said. “It’ll depend on the cost of it. If it’s too expensive, other medical companies might make fake ones for cheaper that are unsafe, and it’ll be a bigger problem.” The idea of this breakthrough might not have a chance to exist, considering this is all speculation. The mere speculation has caused controversy and made a lot people think about their stand on this idea. Life after 100 years old could be possible in 2050 as stated by the Pew Research Center, and society has spoken its thoughts.
“I would want to live past 100 ... I love to help people and having more time would give me a better chance to help more people. I have a lot I want to do and accomplish in life, and it will give me more time to do everything I want to.” Harsha Mirchandi CCM student
Medical physician discusses support for universal health care By Josef Luftman Layout Editor
On Monday, Nov. 11, Dr. Winthrop C. Dillaway III, president of the New Jersey Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program, spoke to a small group of students and faculty about why people should support universal health care. Dillaway started off his lecture by juggling three bean bags that his wife made. They had three letters on them: “A” for access, “C” for cost and “Q” for quality. Dillaway explained that these three elements are essential to providing affordable health
care for all Americans. He said this “juggling act” is challenging because in order to satisfy each of these areas, monetary resources are being strained. Comparing the health care system in the U.S. with health care abroad, Dillaway pointed out some of the economic obstacles in the U.S.: $2.7 trillion (annual health care cost); 10,000 different plans, 30 percent overhead; 313 million (U.S. citizens needing health care); 1 million bankruptcies. In “The Healing of America,” a book by T.R. Reid examining universal health care, Dil-
laway quoted sections explaining the differences in health care coverage between the United States and other leading countries. “All leading countries provide universal health care at approximately half the cost and higher quality,” he said. “Some are publicly delivered; some are privately delivered; some are combinations of public and private.” “Universal health care contains few extras,” said Monica Maraska, chair of the nursing department at the County College or Morris. “I do agree with what Dr. Dillaway said about the
Affordable Care Act being something that was absolutely needed. It certainly is not perfect, but it is a step in the right direction. [It’s] not without its negative downside and many insurance plans have some… luxuries that universal health care does not.” The Affordable Care Act could benefit CCM students by increasing opportunities in the health care field and enabling more patients to receive more and better care. “It means that the hospital I work for will be paid when an uninsured person is admitted for care,” said Carmen Del Guercio,
a nursing major and president of the Student Nursing Association at CCM. “Our country has enough wealth to support the well-being of each citizen within it.” The goal of universal health care is to ensure that all U.S. citizens have access to health care. “Those who are not insured and who are underinsured do have poor health outcomes,” Maraska said. “Being a nurse and ensuring that everybody gets the same care… that’s very difficult to do, so it’s very frustrating… Anything that addresses that problem with equal health care for all certainly needs to be explored.”

Guest speakers inspire CCM students
By Josef Luftman Layout Editor
On Wednesday, Nov. 20, County College of Morris welcomed two guest speakers who are professionals in broadcast and multimedia journalism, Doug Looney and Radhika Marya. Speaking to two small groups of CCM students and faculty, they presented information and answered questions about various career possibilities in the communication field. Marya, a multimedia journalist, started her career in newspapers, later moving on to WNYC public radio, various online outlets, and eventually working as a senior editor at mobile-first Breaking News at NBC. She recently left that job and is now looking for her next career opportunity. “I am what I consider an accidental journalist,” Marya said. “When I was little kid I [thought] ‘I’m going to be like Lois Lane someday’ and it ac-

Dr. Matthew Jones, chairperson of the communication department, answers questions at a communication job fair. tually kind of happened even though I didn’t plan for it.” Her advice for CCM students is two-fold. She advised students to consider whether or
not a master’s degree is important for the career they want to pursue instead of just assuming one should get an advanced degree. Secondly, she feels it is
vital to learn the basics of a journalist’s craft and not assume that one only needs to be well-versed in digital media. “I studied featuring [and] business reporting because those things are still very important,” she said. “We shouldn’t just discard those basic skills just for the sake of [learning] new technology.” Looney dreamed of working in broadcast news and was lucky enough to land an entry-level job with ABC news in the late ‘90s “running scripts.” Looney went on to work for Disney Media Group when digital media was still in it’s infancy, creating “little old web videos, which, at the time, were kind of groundbreaking.” However, the basic skills of telling a good story never go out of style. “If you’re a good storyteller, whether it’s with visual or audio or especially the written word … that goes a long way,” Marya said. “If you can write a good story, you can craft
a good story in many mediums.” Kelby Clark, a journalism major, was grateful to gain insight into the various communication fields like journalism, PR and broadcasting. “[It was] an eye opener to hear from people that have been in the field and have had experiences in things that we’re interested in and hopefully, [will] have careers in,” Clark said. Marya also encouraged students to take advantage of internship opportunities, even when they are not ideal. Lia Weber, a communication major at CCM, completely agrees. “I’ve already had an internship doing social media … and I don’t really think that that was really right for me,” she said. “It helped me realize that it wasn’t really anything that I wanted to do.” “Communications is a great career to have,” Looney said. “The key is to find out what you want to do.”
Cancer: Patient saved by sister’s courageous act
Continued from page 1
“The pain wouldn’t go away and she was crying so hard,” Delgado said. “We took her to the hospital, and we were told the cancer was back.” Britanny missed kindergarten and was back at the Hackensack hospital for chemotherapy. Her father, Harold Delgado, was constantly at work, and Gomez was an hour away at the hospital. “I would have to go to school or cook for myself a lot,” Delgado said. “Our neighborhood was so supportive. They would bring us dinner or stop by to check on us. They even raised money to help pay for Britanny’s treatment.” Britanny’s second time at chemotherapy was not successful. Her body was no longer strong enough to handle the chemotherapy. It was decided that she could not continue with the treatment due to her weight loss. “The doctor told us she wasn’t going to make it the second time,” Gomez said. “I was told she had a 3 percent chance of living. They were ready to pull her out in the hallway.”
In shock, Delgado and her family insisted there must be something else the doctors could do. The doctors tried a bone marrow transplant, but the chance of Brittany surviving would still be insignificant. “The doctors told us they believed the transplant wouldn’t work because she was doing so badly,” Delgado said. “My parents decided to take their chances and believed that God would cure her.” Delgado and her family were tested hoping to be a match for Britanny. Approximately three out of every 10 people can find a similar donor. It can take months or even years to find a match if no related donor is available, according to Cancer Today magazine. Many patients who are placed on the waiting list for a transplant die in their quest to receive it. “My parents sat down with me and explained I was Britanny’s match,” Delgado said. “I was only 12 and didn’t know how to handle it, but at the same time I was mature enough to understand that was a life-or-death situation.” Delgado’s surgery was scheduled within a week. “I remember walking into my sister’s room that day and she looked so bad,” Del-
gado said. “At that point, I was no longer scared because I knew I was doing the right thing. I walked into the surgery room the doctors explained to me the procedure, and it felt like I was in some other world.” Delgado was given general anesthesia and the transplant took about an hour. “They took out the stream cells directly from my bone marrow and I remember it was a lot of blood,” Delgado said. “This type of surgery is big, it was out of my back, and the doctors did it out of my spine. I was in a lot of pain after.” As soon as Delgado woke up she was able to see Britanny. “Everyone had to help me walk because it was so painful,” said Delgado. “But then I saw the blood being transferred to Britanny and I remember thinking ‘That’s it. I really hope it works.’” Delgado had to skip school and rest for more than two weeks. “Nikolle was so amazing and strong,” Gomez said. “I remember her shaking and crying before the surgery and all she kept saying was ‘I can do it for my sister’ over and over again. She always had such a strong bond with Britanny and I believe she was chosen to be her match.” In less than two weeks, Delgado and her family received the news that Britanny’s
body accepted the transplant successfully. “The doctors were all shocked,” Delgado said. “They said I saved her. No one believed it would work. It was a big miracle.” Britanny remained isolated in a separate room for six months with an air purifier to avoid any form of contact with bacteria or germs, because she was too weakto handle it. When Delgado and her family would come by to visit, they would have to wear masks and wash their hands multiple times. If Britanny attracted any kind of virus or germ, her recovery would be hampered indefinitely. After spending six months in isolation, Britanny was able to come home. She finally attended school for the first time. “She got so much healthier, her hair grew back and she started first grade,” Delgado said. “I couldn’t believe I was able to do that for her. Everything is just a big memory for us. She is now 15 years old and she is becoming an amazing adult.” Delgado is now 21 years old and is currently studying early childhood education at County College of Morris. She has aspirations of becoming a kindergarten teacher. She currently holds a part-time job as a nanny. “Having cancer was very hard, I was very young but I remember a lot from it,” Brittany said. “I was always feeling weak and going through surgery was difficult, but it was all worth it because of my sister.” Britanny loves animals and dreams of becoming a veterinarian. “Because of my sister I get to chase this dream,” Britanny said. “I am a freshman and I am looking into colleges.” With one sister in college and the other soon to follow, the admiration for that life-saving decision years ago does not wane for their proud mother. “I admire my daughter Nikolle so much,” Gomez said. “I remember bringing Britanny home the day she was born and Nikolle took her in and kept saying Britanny was only hers. Her love for her sister made her so brave to go into surgery. Her love saved Britanny.”

‘Carrie’ returns to frighten new film-goers By Daniel Eng Opinions Editor
A shy, pale, teenage girl runs through a locker room with blood on her hands. As she clutches at her fellow classmates she screams for help, smearing them with blood as their looks of confusion and concern turn to disgust. “It’s just your period,” one of the girls says, smiling as she hands the crying girl a tampon. “Plug it up.” The girl refuses the tampon in terror, confused and helpless, insisting to the others that something is wrong. The atmosphere quickly escalates. One after another they begin to taunt the screaming girl, throwing tampons and waving pads in her face as they chant, “Plug it up! Plug it up!”
One girl records the humiliation through her smartphone while leading the charge closer toward the helpless young girl, who crawls backward on the locker room floor in nothing but a towel. Finally through the screams and the laughter, a voice of reason emerges as a faculty member disperses the crowd of girls to attend to the lone, bloody, shaking girl surrounded by tampons on the cold tile floor. Audiences may recognize this scene, sans smartphone, from the 1976 horror classic “Carrie,” based on the Stephen King novel. County College of Morris students have their own take on the new film. Elizabeth Mertz, an early childhood education major, said the film was well-made and
up-to-date. “I think that the filmmakers definitely stuck to the original and casted it appropriately,” Mertz said. “I think it had a modern twist to it.” Mertz went on to praise the underlying themes of the film. “‘Carrie’ is not only a fantastic, well-made horror movie,” Mertz said. “It also sends a strong message that bullying has been around for generations and the severity hasn’t changed, including how the bullied respond to situations.” Kimberly Peirce of “Boys Don’t Cry,” directed the reboot with Julianne Moore as Carrie’s deranged mother and Chloe Grace Moretz as the titular character. Peirce is attentive with giving a makeover to “Carrie.” The new
faces, better special effects and cinematography are all uniformly excellent as the modern technical quality breathes new life into the film. Moretz and Moore both give strong performances as they summon empathy and horror from filmgoers. Much of the film’s appeal comes from the nostalgia it carries by paralleling director Brian De Palma’s original in a near scene-by-scene fashion. Peirce is careful in not altering the plot or the feel of the source material, making it play like a faithful, accurate remake, not a reimagining, spin-off or sequel. This attention to accuracy, however, is the film’s biggest weakness. Peirce takes absolutely no risks in her “Carrie” reboot. Aside from the incorporation of
smartphones and social media, there are no additions to the plot. There is a brief introduction with Carrie’s birth attempts to shed some light on the origin of the character’s telekinetic gift, but it offers no insight. New filmgoers unfamiliar with the original “Carrie” will enjoy this version of the film as its timeless plot, swift direction and strong acting are much more engaging than much of the usual gore porn that ends up in theaters. Fans of the original may enjoy the new version because of its fresh faces, clean camera work and bloody nuances; however, some may be disappointed, as there is little new substance offered. Peirce’s remake is accurate, to a fault.
Online dating paves way for social interaction By Nikki Versandi

The new generation socializes more online than in-person. According to a Pew Research Center study, an online research resource, there has been an 11 percent increase in Americans who are using or know someone who is using online dating websites to meet new people since 2005. “I think it [online dating] has a lot to do with our trending ways in how we interact with one another, regarding social media or our phones,” said Christine Reyes, a nursing major at County College of Morris. “We look down at our phones more than we look up at people, especially
in public spaces.” That is the way that social interaction is changing. People are using dating websites to make social connections whether temporary or long lasting, according to Reyes. “I don't think that online dating is the only problem,” Reyes said. “Facebook, tweeting and text messaging, it’s a possible repercussion the younger generation that this will be all they know.” Reyes is not the only student who believes that the way people interact is changing because of social networking. “People feel more comfortable when they are behind the scenes,” said Becka Devalv, 20-year-old human services major
at CCM. “You can feel more real and be more honest with people when you aren't talking to them face to face.” There are a variety of websites that are specified to attract people of specific creeds, genders or identities which is creating less face-to-face socialization, according to Devalv. “It cuts back on people’s social interactions and that hurts them more because they don't know how to interact with people other than typing,” Devalv said. While some agree that the increase in social media may affect a person’s interactions with people around them, others have found it to be a good thing. “For the most part my friends have
gone on some really cool dates, even if they haven't turned into anything further than that,” said Lauren G, english education major. “I just feel like online dating is going to continue being a big thing in people lives, if not the main way to meet people.” Lauren would like to see people creating connections in actual life experiences but feels that it is up to the person. “I know people who've been dating for five or six months, and the guy turned out to be a really nice guy,” G said. “They're both really lucky.”
Are you suffering from ‘brain fog’ or forgetfulness? Here’s your path to a better brain By Khushbu Kapadia
more juice. For example, week one is one juice per day, week two, two juices per day, and so forth. Null suggests to get up to four juices a day.
Editor in Chief
As you get older, so does your brain. Or at least that’s what we’re told. Wrong! As you get older, the aging of your brain depends on the lifestyle you adapt to. What exactly is meant by this “lifestyle” that might be an advantage or a disadvantage to your brain? Gary Null, co-author of “The Joy of Juicing,” provides a thorough analysis of the affects your lifestyle portrays on the workings of your brain. In Null’s documentary and book, “Mind Power,” he informs the audience about various things that destruct your brain power, thus causing numerous problems such as brain fog, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia and much more. There are several things that causes your brain to age, such as stress, lack of energy and deficit of blood and nutrients going into the brain. From 40 years onward, most people lose blood flow to the brain resulting in losing brain power, losing memory, losing sharpness and losing sleep. Once again, keep in mind, this is not because of age, it’s because of your lifestyle! Now that you know what it is that destroys your brain’s ability to remember and increase in power, let’s go through some things that Null suggests would aid in recovery and enhancement for your brain. According to Null, there are some healthy approaches that you should adapt to in order to reverse brain age and increase brain power. •
Cleanse your body of all toxins: Null suggests having a glass (12-16 oz. a day) of an organic vegetable juice. Every week you should add one
•
Also in the cleansing process of your diet, add fiber. The best fibers are oats, beans, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, apple skins, jerusalem artichokes, fennel and anise. You should intake 50 grams a day of quality fiber. It’s recommended to have fiber before you go to bed at night; this cleanses your body overnight.
•
Apart from natural juice and fibers, some natural nutrients are also crucial in the cleansing process of your diet. Some great nutrients are dandelion, burdock root, buckthorn and berry juices. Good oils such as organic raw coconut oil, macadamia oil, mustard seed oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil, and oil of primrose are also filled with natural nutrients.
The first things to eliminate when it comes to brain health are foods that your brain is “allergic” to such as wheat, dairy, sugar, corn, beef and eggs. •
Exercise: Null recommends exercising six days a week including 45 minutes of aerobic activity and resistance exercise. This is crucial in the process of rebuilding your body after the healthy cleanse.

Null also gives useful advice to people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. “For those people who have Alzheimer’s or early sign of Alzheimer’s, take L-Phenylalanine, Glutamine, Taurine, Manganese, Caprylic Acid, Melatonin and Bcomplex, in addition to a healthy diet and exercise,” he said. These are all natural supplements that will aid your brain to recovery. Following all of these tactics will not only improve brain power and reserve brain again, but also you will notice that the arthritis, the fibromyalgia, the infection, the constant colds, the flu, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol will all significantly improve and may even be eliminated.

Would bribery improve grades? Study shows money can increase students’ will to perform By Alyson DeVries Contributor
Is it possible that the simple answer for students getting better grades is bribing? In 2010, the film “Freakonomics” was released based off the bestselling book. The fim introduced many documentaries going into detail about human nature through science and economics. One documentary showed a trial that would pay ninth graders at Bloom Trail High School $50 a month for all grades a C or above, and no more than one unexcused
absence. Also, whoever is eligible each month has a chance to win $500 in a lottery and ride home in a hummer limo. “I think if the system works, do it,” said Mike Lopez, a County College of Morris student. “I would definitely try to be a better student overall, and I don’t have a doubt in my mind everyone else would want to, as well. I mean it’s basically free money, who wouldn’t?” The money received would help some students, especially those working and struggling to pay for self-expenses.
“It’s hard to pay things off, even when you’re working,” Lopez said. “The monthly $50 would have helped me fill up my car every once in a while and would’ve made a big difference. I think having motivation like that would have made me try harder in high school.” If this process was introduced to freshmen and continued all the way into their senior year, students would have more money in their pockets and increased collegiate options with their higher grades. “I really don’t understand
this at all,” said Favian Molina, a recent college graduate. “High school kids should already have the drive to want to do well. They have all the tools they need to succeed, and if they don’t want to use them, that’s their own fault. They shouldn’t have to need a monetary bribe to want to graduate with above average grades.” The documentary in the end revealed that majority of the students who were initially classified as “average” brought their grades up to meet the requirements needed, whereas students who were completely failing did not try to
bring their grades up. “The idea of cash for grades is awesome,” said Krystal Atieh, a high school senior. “I know I would already make the monthly requirements without having to do anything extra, but I think it would help the people who were struggling. Everybody needs money, right?” Whether or not people agree with the topic or think its fair, it has been proven to work with most kids. It gives them a better chance at succeeding in the future, while making some money while doing it.

Google services have been useful tools that have existed to streamline the Internet experience. Such conveniences as their search engine, maps and email have come at Google’s own expense without the user really having to invest anything. Google has been taking steps to access its users’ personal information to enhance their own services to tailor it to its users. Google Plus, the company’s answer to Facebook and similar social networking services, has been integrated into Google owned websites such as YouTube and Picasa. These websites were previously available to any email account; now they require a Google Plus account in order to be used. Backlash has been prominent with several users deleting their accounts or ceasing use and others signing petitions to force Google’s hand. One such petition garnered over 180,000 signatures in a week since the YouTube shift according to an article posted by The Guardian. “Every time I try to comment or even have to log on, I have to log in to get anywhere on YouTube,” said Johnathan Arbelaez, a frequent YouTuber and Android user. “It’s boring, it’s annoying. ‘Why are you doing that? You’re destroying the fun of it,’ that’s what I say.” YouTube has been the most recent to fall prey to Google and their ambitions to match Google Plus to that of Facebook’s audience and influence. Before, one could comment anonymously on a video without worries of re-
percussions; now, Google Plus is required to use a real name to comment with suspension as punishment for those who do not comply to Google’s terms and conditions. “I feel like it’s being pushed on us,” said Michelle Vargas, a habitual user of Google and YouTube. “I used to (comment on YouTube) a lot, but since I use a different email for my YouTube account, I can’t do it. It’s not fair.” Google’s own explanation of this switch is to implement more moderation and discourage comments that are hateful, ignorant and unrelated to the video. But those comments are still viable and can occur. The difference being that one’s real name is tied to the comment along with personal information, such as phone numbers and uploaded pictures. Since each service by Google is tied to the other, Google Plus accounts can be accessed through the Google search engine just as anyone with a Facebook can search for other Facebook users. The common theme between these user integrations is the sacrifice of one’s privacy in order to enhance the user’s web experience. “[Privacy] is a right for everyone,” Vargas said. “You should be able to do with it what you want, not what Google wants.” Despite the transparency behind a Google Plus account, Google is implementing new innovative features exclusive only to its service. Its Communities feature lets everyone in the circle see the type of activities one has done on the Internet. Its Hangouts extends that even further by proposing real life meetings to a shared location of interest.
Anyone can join circles, developing new ways for commercial businesses to reach out to their consumers. In a similar way, employers can search any prospective hires personal information and discover more of their online presence through a Google Plus account than through Facebook or Twitter. With regards to that, Jamie Ayala, an international studies major, suggests that users should take caution with what they put up online. “Sometimes you apply for a job in Japan and you can’t go there…then (your Google Plus) should only be professional information,” Ayala said. “Go into your personal history, but nothing too personal. A name, a phone number, something job related.” The newest feature in the planned 2014 Android update, KitKat 4.4, is a caller ID that displays the caller’s Google Plus information regardless of service or device. Anyone dialed through an Android phone with KitKat will have a personal image along with a full name and the phone number appear on the screen. Google has been known to innovate starting from their grassroots as a search engine to their maps features and new technology like Google Glass. But as the company continues to expand, the amount of information it has gained has made it into a force that has brought it into the homes of thousands of users. Google has become the Internet’s first online monopoly. It is a tool that should be used, not the other way around.
CCM Titans men’s basketball begins season By John Goldfarb Sports Editor
A new men’s basketball season has started. County College of Morris men’s basketball players and coaches have high hopes for the new season as well as confidence that they will make the playoffs. Ryan Harris, a criminal justice major, has high hopes for the team because they have four returning players to lead this season. “I think we’re going to look real good,” Harris said. “Personally, I believe we’re going to come away with a win. So after that there’s going to be a whole bunch of heads turned, like, oh, they didn’t think we can do this and whatever. I think we’re going to be fine. I think we’re going to win and just move on from there.” Harris said the defense will
help the CCM men’s basketball team make the playoffs this year. “I truly believe because we have so many options like from the point guard to the center position,” Harris said. “We have so many different weapons to use, so we’re going to be very effective on the court.” CCM’s new men’s basketball head coach Eric Powe was previously a women’s head coach and an assistant coach for Mercy and Felician Colleges, division two schools. He also has experience with strength and conditioning at both colleges. “I think we got experience,” Powe said. “And coaching men for a long period of time, it’s going to give me an advantage of connecting with the players, understanding how they process information, and then incorporate all that into ... a teaching meth-
od that will get out to all of the athletes.” Powe said you have to be always optimistic in the eye of adversity, and everybody wants to win and nobody goes out with an attitude. “Once again you want to be optimistic,” Powe said. “Number one, it’s the work ethics of my athletes. They’re student athletes and have obligations as being a student at CCM, representing the institution in a positive way and have that transcendend on the basketball court. All these fellas work very hard at practice, their attendance is solid, and their personalities are solid. They’re very polite young men; I think all of them will do very well beyond college.”
