CCM students advocate for equal opportunity BY KELBY K. CLARK Features Editor
United States high school graduates face more financial barriers to higher education than graduates of any previous generation. However, for the estimated 65,000 undocumented students living in the U.S. that graduate from high schools all across the country, dealing with barriers to education is nothing new, according to a report by Collegeboard. com. Even today, when undocumented students turn to more affordable avenues of higher education like community college, they are charged out-of-state tuition rates, despite whether or not they have resided in the state for years, which often stands in the way of many of them attaining a degree. At County College of Morris, undocumented students — individuals born abroad who are not U.S. citizens or legal residents — and documented legal U.S. citizens are attempting to remove the tuition barrier by working together to rally support for tuition equity within the Morris County community. “I was one out of eight students I know of that was undocumented at Roxbury High School, but I was the only one out of eight able to attend CCM with the out-of-state rate,” said Renata

Renata Mauriz speaks to Board of Trustees members about tuition equity at CCM. Mauriz, a fourth semester international studies major and honors student at CCM. “Every semester I always wonder if I’m going to have to drop out.” For Mauriz and many others, affording the CCM out-ofcounty tuition rate is a serious financial burden. With a cost of out-of-state tuition at CCM falling at approximately $350 per credit per course, compared to a rate of approximately $250 for out-of-county residents and $135 for in-county students, a basic three-credit course would total more than $1,000 for an
undocumented student enrolled in the college. Tuition equity at CCM would mean that students like Mauriz, who has resided in Roxbury Township for nearly six years, could pay the more affordable in-county tuition rate. Mauriz decided it was time to bring the student issue to the forefront of the college’s agenda and so, on March 13, Mauriz and more than 14 additional students, who are now referring to themselves as Tuition Equity Advocates of N.J. (TEANJ), attended a Board of Trustees meeting held on campus to show initiative and
support for their cause. CCM students Francisco Agudelo, Lina Marin De La Rosa and Mauriz gave accounts of their experiences as undocumented students in the country. Many students in attendance were moved by their speeches. “My best friend is an undocumented student here at CCM. I have been through a lot with her, and I know all of the complications and ‘road blocks’ she encounters being undocumented,” said Emily Van Hook, a business administration major at CCM. “In my opinion, it is not fair that these
students should have to pay such high prices, more than $300 per credit.” Aside from the three individuals’ statements, students who attended said the rest of the meeting was absolutely political. Some students explained that members on the Board of Trustees listened to the students’ concerns, but suggested no movement for action or evoked a sense of immediacy and importance. Nursing major, Marianna Borrero, found the meeting to be an eye-opening experience. “I went to the Board of Trustees Meeting on March 13... expecting to just go and support my best friend make a proposition to the Board. I thought this was a simple enough task,” Borrero said. “What happened next was not exactly expected, the whole room got a little heated. The tension was palpable.” Borrero explained that the Board of Trustees Chair Advocate told Mauriz directly that the Board was not going to put the tuition equity issue into their next meeting’s agenda because there was “nothing to discuss.” “I was puzzled by this statement because I had not expected it. How was that answer appropriate,” Borrero said. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
CCM student receives prestigious scholarship BY KHUSHBU KAPADIA Editor in Chief
Some college students are achieving huge success, even at a national level. Apart from having an outstanding college academic record, students are going above and beyond at trying to achieve exceptional national academic recognition. One such example is Sean Moore, a liberal arts major at County College of Morris who has been selected as one of only 73 recipients nationwide for the reputable Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship. The foundation rewards up to $30,000 per year to obtain a bachelor’s degree. According to jckf.org, “the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship makes it possible for the nation’s top community college students to complete their bachelor’s degrees by transferring to a four-year college or university.” The scholarship is intended to
cover a significant amount of Moore’s college expenses. The scholarship covers tuition, living expenses, books and other fees for two to three years that are needed to complete a bachelor’s degree for a transfer student. “It’s up to $30,000 a year. I would be pretty much set if I got accepted to any on the top-notch schools I applied to,” Moore said. Moore applied to top, competitive schools and is hoping for good results. For Moore, it was a long but inspirational path of academic success. “I didn’t do well in high school at all. They basically passed me because of sympathy.” The inspiration and motivation in Moore’s academics came from many things. However, one such inspiration developed from a trip Moore made to Cornell University. “I did really well my first semester here at CCM,” he said. “A friend mine, who went to CCM and now attends
Cornell University encouraged me to get involved and said that I can go to any school I want when he found out how well I did.” “After visiting my friend in Cornell, I developed a stronger passion for academics and decided that I want to go to a prestigious school like Cornell.” Not only is academics Moore’s strong suit, but also extra-curricular activities. Moore is involved in Phi Theta Kappa honors society, where he holds the position of vice president and he is also a member of the Student Government Association. After earning the prestigious Jack Kent Cook Undergraduate Transfer scholarship, Moore awaits PHOTO BY KHUSHBU KAPADIA to hear back from highly competiSean Moore receives Jack Kent Cook Undergraduate tive schools which will ultimately Transfer scholarship. foreshadow his bright future.

Imagine that you are a parent with a child in elementary school. You hear that there has been shots fired at the school and run to their aid. You see other children holding hands, making their way outside into the arms of their parents. Unfortunately, your child is not one of the lucky ones. You realize that your worst nightmare has become a reality. Your child died at the hands of a young gunman. You then join the crowd of weeping parents who just lost their sons or daughters in a building full of bloodshed. On April 11, the U.S. Senate voted down a compromise bill that extended background checks on gun sales. The bill failed by a vote of 54 to 46. It would have expanded checks to cover all firearms sales at gun shows and over the Internet, but would have exempted sales between friends and acquaintances. Adding to the anger and the heartbreak, according to USA Today, opinion polls showed that up to 90 percent of Americans supported the bill, including 74 percent of members of the National Rifle Association. Yet, after an avalanche of misinformation by opponents, it fell six votes short of the 60 votes needed for passage under Senate rules. Do the young and innocent lives that were lost in Newtown, Aurora or Blacksburg mean nothing to us? If not, what will it take? Will it take 50 young children and their teachers at an elementary school being murdered to affect change in our country? What about 100? 200? What will it take for our elected representatives to pass legislation that would enhance the safety of the constituents that they are supposed to serve? The men and women of the U.S. Senate who voted against the measure have disgraced the office of which they hold. Being a U.S. senator is an extremely high
honor. Few Americans run for political office in general and even fewer win spots in the U.S. Senate. As reported by many news agencies, Dr. William Begg, a physician who made it to the emergency room the day of the Newtown shooting, said during his Senate testimony: “People say that the overall number of assault weapon deaths is small, but you know what? Please don’t tell that to the people of Tucson or Aurora or Columbine or Virginia Tech, and don’t tell that to the people in Newtown..” I am all for the Second Amendment, allowing every American citizen the right to carry a gun. Over the summer, I had the opportunity to shoot a 12-gauge shotgun for the first time. It was one of the most exciting experiences of my life. I also have experience shooting a .22-caliber rifle. I like my right to carry and use a firearm just as much as the next person, but the right to carry a firearm must be weighed with the public’s general welfare. When we have toddlers being killed by loaded firearms and students being killed by those who should be receiving psychological care, something must be done. As people living in a relatively safe part of New Jersey, we would like to think that acts like this cannot happen. I hate to break it to my readers, but not everyone is a responsible gun owner. The young minds that were taken off this earth too soon must not be in vein. At a minimum, we owe it to the 26 human beings who were killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and their families who have been left to pick up the pieces and grapple with the magnitude of this horrifying act. This fight is no longer one of legislation — the disgrace caused by the U.S. Senate turned the issue into a fight of morals.

The institution of a tuition equity policy at County College of Morris has been discussed in previous years. CCM became one of the first schools in New Jersey to openly acknowledge the enrollment of undocumented immigrants and allow them to pay county tuition rates when the Board of Trustees voted for the policy 7-1 in February 2011, according to the publication on NJ.com. Since then, the policy has been changed so that CCM’s undocumented students have to pay the out-of-state tuition rate. A total of 13 states have enacted laws that permit undocumented students to pay in-state tuition rates, including Illinois, California, Texas, Maryland, Connecticut and New York, according to the National Conference of State Legislature. However, in New Jersey there is currently no statewide policy that deals with undocumented students, meaning that each New Jersey college and university, including CCM, decides the tuition rate for their undocumented enrollees and has the power to change that tuition policy, according to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Mauriz and other students involved in Tuition Equity Ad-
vocates of New Jersey are determined to obtain the Board of Trustees support for tuition equity at CCM, and in the future they hope that the support will lead to a policy change. CCM students like Charles Ziegler, who attended the Board of Trustees meeting in March, are confused as to what exactly is preventing the policy change. “The board says the law is what is stopping those who have lived in Morris County their whole lives from receiving incounty tuition,” Ziegler said. “This is bewildering the fact that a piece of paper is stopping these committed students from being able to flourish; these students deserve the right to have this financial handicap lifted.” The New Jersey state legislature is currently reviewing several pieces of legislation, including the A1659 and the S2355, that would allow undocumented students to pay in-state tuition if they attended a New Jersey high school for at least three years. However, Mauriz and other CCM students advocating for tuition equity do not want to rely on the possibility that these bills might be passed when the college has the power to do something about the issue. Mauriz and other student
participants in Tuition Equity Advocates of New Jersey will begin reaching out to the CCM student body and spreading awareness of the facts, figures and controversies surrounding tuition equity by getting involved with the student panel presented by CCM’s Diversity Committee. The panel will be hosted on April 25. If Mauriz and supporters are successful in initiating a policy change, it will mean progress for the thousands of undocumented students living and working toward an education in the country. “I attended the last Board of Trustees meeting to listen to some classmates speak on behalf of themselves and other undocumented students that are currently attending CCM, they are students that were brought to this country by their family members for one reason or another illegally,” said Cindy Levine, business administration major at CCM. “These students have been raised as Americans, attended public schools...many of them are honor students and involved in the CCM community. Although [undocumented students] are county residents, and have been most of their lives, they are being charged an out-of-state tuition rate. I believe that equal tuition for all county residents, despite their status, would be beneficial to the school and the county. As a CCM student I have a voice and so do you.”

Boston Marathon bombing: CCM professor tells his story BY MELISSA DELLACATO Managing Editor
There were approximately 23,000 runners in the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, all of whom would unknowingly experience a tragic, historical event. A County College of Morris professor was one of these many runners. Professor Mark Washburne has been running the Boston Marathon every year since 2005, making this year’s marathon his ninth one. It began like any other race for him. He ran 24 other marathons before, so he knew how they went and what to expect. “I didn’t walk at all during the race, but I didn’t have my fastest time,” Washburne said. Washburne finished the race in 3 hours and 50 minutes at exactly 2:14 p.m. His girlfriend, Diane, was watching on Boylston Street, waiting to greet him at the finish line. Washburne called Diane at 2:37 p.m. after he crossed the finish line and received his medal. Thirteen minutes later, at approximately 2:50 p.m., Washburne was
walking parallel to the street. He heard this “huge explosion from behind.” “I was literally one block away,” he said. This sparked a lot of confusion and chaos among the runners. He heard someone close by say that “it sounded like a helicopter flying into a building.” The second explosion occurred approximately 15 seconds later. “I walked a bit further and I started seeing people running from Boylston, down the side streets,” he said. “It looked like everybody was on their cell phones. I have a flip phone, so I still didn’t know what was going on at the time.” Washburne described the panic and chaos of the scene. People were crying and running,
searching for answers that no one knew. He said there was a “wall of people” rushing towards a traffic cop to see what was going on, but he didn’t know, either. Meanwhile, his girlfriend was cutting through Lord & Taylor to make her way to the hotel, since Boylston Street was too crowded. She didn’t even hear the explosion and joked about how she was “shopping while there were explosions going on,” said Washburne. The streets of Boston were so crowded that Washburne had a tough time getting home, as well. “There was a row of ambulances trying to get through when we were leaving,” he said. Despite everything, Washburne said he was okay emotionally on that first day, mostly because he didn’t know the extent
of what had happened or “how bad it was.” He said it wasn’t until Tuesday, April 16, when he described the scene to his history classes, that he got emotional. “For me, the emotional part was having Diane there watching the race. She’s there to support me, and she’s in harm’s way,” he said. “If I was just a few minutes slower, she still would’ve been on Boylston Street when the explosion happened.” A few days later, on Thursday, April 18, the suspects were revealed by authorities. “My heart literally stopped because they finally had suspects,” he said. “They said the video cameras from Lord & Taylor were the ones that caught the suspects walking through the area. [Diane] was in that area.”
“I walked a bit further and I started seeing people running from Boylston, down the side streets. It looked like everybody was on their cell phones. I have a flip phone, so I still didn’t know what was going on at the time.” Mark Washburne CCM Professor
The following day, April 19, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found in a covered boat in Watertown, Mass., according to the criminal complaint filed against him on April 21. He has been charged with “using a weapon of mass destruction” and “malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device.” According to the charges, three people lost their lives and more than 200 suffered from injuries that day. The question remains as to how Tsarnaev should be tried and if he should be treated as an American citizen. “[Tsarvaev] should never see the light of day again,” said Jon Rodriguez, an 18-year-old CCM student. “Maybe he should be locked up for good.” Washburne had an opposing stance. “Our Constitution was set up to protect both the guilty and the innocent. It’s an American citizen on American soil,” he said. “People should be given a fair trial.”
CCM students react to growing tensions on Korean peninsula Visual arts major plans trip to Seoul, South Korea in December BY JACOB WINTERFIELD Communications Manager
An attack on Seoul, South Korea’s capital, by North Korea is highly unlikely, according to David C. Kang, professor and director of University of Southern California’s Korean Studies Institute. Seoul is located 30 miles from the Demilitarized Zone and could easily be destroyed by the North Koreans, but that would facilitate an immediate response from the United States, which would result in the complete destruction of North Korea, according to Kang, in a lecture for Korea academy for Educators workshop. The DMZ located at the 38th parallel has remained stable since 1953, Kang said. “Deterrence is incredibly solid on the peninsula. It’s worked for 60 years,” Kang said. “When Gary Luck, the commander of the Korean and U.S. forces, was asked by Bill Clinton ‘What happens if I go to war on the peninsula?’ Gary Luck said, ‘A mil-
lion deaths and $1 trillion in damage.’ ” Students at County College of Morris reacted to the growing tensions on the Korean peninsula. Oliver Torres, visual arts major, plans to visit South Korea in December. Torres would like the opportunity to experience the culture firsthand and find out what Korean life is like each day. “The United States role is to watch over the rest of the world and keep everyone safe,” Torres said. “The North Korean leader was raised to be threatening, but I don’t think we will start a war, and if he does, it will be without warning.” North Korea and South Korea were divided at the 38th parallel by the United States and the Soviet Union following Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II. Korea was a colony ruled by Japan from 1910-1945, according to the U.S. State Department. The Korean War began June 25, 1950, when troops from North Korea invaded South Korea. The war was a result
Press Release College Student Success Course Exciting new College Student Success course offering at CCM, starting this Summer 2013! Sometimes the transition from high school or the workforce into college is not easy. Time-management, motivation, study strategies are some of the challenges college students face on a regular basis. Some students might already be enrolled in college for some time, but still struggle to find their way. Student retention and success is an area of concern across colleges and universities nationally. There are many studies that show students who feel connected, engaged and confident about their academic capabilities and experiences have a greater chance of succeeding. County College of Morris is proud to continue enhancing our class offerings by launching our own College Student Success (CSS 011 – N2 Credits) course beginning this Summer 2013 semester. The course will be offered during Summer 2, 3, and 4 sessions and also

Five months into the war, Communist China joined forces with North Korea, and the Soviet Union helped supply the armies. The U.S. and a combined U.N. force battled North Korea until the war ended July 27, 1953. Nick Kuzezki, a business major and advocate for peace, said he thinks that North Korea holds the U.S. accountable for the Korean War. Kuzezki said that North Korea will use nuclear weapons to intimidate other countries especially South Korea. “North Korea does not want to be held under the watchful eyes of the USA. in regards to South Korea,” Kuzezki said. “In short, they don’t like to be bullied by the greater power.” Over the past several decades, South Korea has achieved a remarkably high level of economic growth and is now the
during the academic year, as an 8-week and 15-week course with various sections to fit the needs of our diverse student population. CSS 011 is designed to assist first year students in their adjustment and success with the college experience. Students will learn about academic expectations and developing skills to meet them, campus resources, library use, making career choices, taking online courses, and working with an academic advisor. This course will also introduce the development of leadership skills. This class will clarify the specific dynamics of the interpersonal relationships within the campus community, emphasizing the expectations placed upon students by professors, and aiding students as they create an understanding of the role they play in their academic journey. Last year, the college ran a pilot version of the course, resulting in very positive student feedback. Opiate addiction among young adults
Local epidemic stirs within County College of Morris BY BRIAN CAPRIOLA News Editor
Within the past five years, abuse rates of both heroin and prescription pain medication have risen sharply among suburban New Jersey young adults, according to Gov. Chris Christie’s Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. For some County College of Morris students, these statistics are indicative of a massive drug abuse problem plaguing the state’s younger population. “Opiate addiction is an epidemic throughout Morris County,” said Caitlyn Hardiman, 21, student at CCM. “It feels like not a day goes by that I’m not hearing of another person I went to school with is in rehab, or sometimes worse. People with such accomplished pasts and bright futures; I don’t understand how this happens” A large number of heroin addictions are a result of prescription painkillers, as heroin is often a cheaper and stronger solution to the more expensive pills, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency. The suburban demographic initially has the financial means to acquire prescription drugs from the black market, but when the pills became too scarce or too expensive, addicts often graduate to heroin use. “It’s known as the cycle of addiction,” said Elizabeth Ho-
ban, coordinator of health services at CCM. “People that may abuse drugs their entire lives have enough sense to avoid heroin, yet factions of our educated youth are hooked on this stuff. The reason is the need to fulfill the opiate high created by painkiller use.” In a 2012 research conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, abuse of prescription
drugs is highest among young adults aged 18-25 years old, with 5.9 percent reporting nonmedical use in the past month. Heroin treatment rate among Morris County residents under the age of 25 is between 4.1-5.1 percent, according to a recent Star Ledger study. Urban areas such as Union and Essex counties reported rates between 0.5-2.0 percent.
“I think people have a misconception about heroin addicts,” said Chuck Moore, a CCM student from Pequannock. “There is a new type of junkie today who probably comes from a nice home and is well-kept, offering little signs of their daily struggle with drug abuse.” According to the Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Administration, roughly 40,000 Americans died from drug overdose in 2010, the last year statistics were available. “Bottom line is this is an epidemic,”Hoban said. “It’s important for students to know that help is available from either myself or through colleagues, free of charge.”

CCM baseball continues strong fundamental traditions BY BRIAN CAPRIOLA News Editor
Comprised of players from all over New Jersey, the 2013 County College of Morris baseball team is among the finest organizations competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Since its first season, nearly 40 years ago, the CCM baseball program has created opportunities for student-athletes to showcase talents at a collegiate level, while preparing players for success off the CCM baseball diamond. “Our main objective is to
help prepare our student-athletes for their academic and athletic futures,” said Brian Eberly, CCM baseball head coach. “We put a tremendous amount of time into helping our players develop mentally and physically. As a team, our goal each year is to win the region and conference.” With the 2013 season nearing conclusion, CCM is in position to fulfill their annual preseason goals, as their winning percentage currently stands at roughly .500 percent. According to a Youngtown Edition team report, certain players that have transfer issues has
disrupted the team’s pitching rotation and everyday lineup, making the path to a conference championship more difficult than anticipated. “It’s been tough losing some of the great players from last year to other schools,” said Eric Barsanti, a first-year-student and second-basemen on the team. “We are a strong team with great unity, but need to eliminate mental mistakes and big first innings. This current roster is full of young talent capable of winning.” For some teammates, playing at CCM is vital to their progression of their baseball careers
and is a necessary step to achieve playing at the professional level. Roughly 46 former CCM players have been drafted by Major League Baseball teams since 1972, of which 6 percent played in the majors, according to baseball-reference.com statistics. “I will be playing college baseball after CCM,” said Chris Hugg, a second-year-player. “The ultimate goal is to get drafted someday. Given the history of CCM baseball, I feel like this is a very realistic and attainable goal, so long as I put in the work.” Players and coaches encourage the staff and students at CCM
to support Titan’s baseball in the second half of the 2013 season. “It’s a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather,” Hugg said. “The games left on the schedule will be intense that carry major playoff implications. “The Titans remaining schedule include away games at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Delaware Technical Community College and Northampton Community College. Final home games of the season will be played April 28 against rival team Burlington Community College.
Convention stresses importance for communications field expansion BY BRIAN CAPRIOLA News Editor
An organization dedicated to the open exchange of ideas, information and research about communication held its annual conference recently, where roughly 100 scholars and professionals in attendance discussed global communication issues, challenges and opportunities. Members of the New Jersey Communication Association gathered from various locations at Fairleigh Dickinson University Saturday, April 20., which provided a forum for students to connect with colleagues and possibly create future professional contacts. “Everybody here has a passion for communications,” said Jordan Kohn, a College of New Jersey student nominated for an award at the NJCA conference. “The conference really encourages me to explore further education and involvement in the communication field, both in an academic and professional environment.” The conference was broken down into four sessions throughout the day, with time allotted for breakfast and lunch services included in the $20 admission charge. Lectures and presentations were conducted by educators and students from all over the northeast region, which presented on
content ranging from human trafficking to examinations of Super Bowl ads. Members were could filter in and out at leisure, as there was no obligation to attend any one specific presentation. During the agenda setting period in FDU’s Henderson Hall Mansion, formerly owned by the Vanderbilt family,CCM assistant professor David Pallant was appointed as the association’s county college representative. After noticable encouragement from the majority of attendants, an initially reluctant Pallant accepted the nomination, citing the importance of community college representation in the NJCA justifies adding to an already full plate. “My wife and I are expecting a newborn baby in two months, there may be repercussions I have to deal with here,” Pallant said. “All kidding aside, community colleges play a significant role within the NJCA. Members of community colleges throughout New Jersey benefit tremendously from the organization, just as the organizations benefit tremendously from their contributions. The opportunity to improve the community college presence in the NJCA is an exciting for both me and my family.” Later in the day, longtime professor
and communication field professional Dr. Maureen Taylor delivered the keynote address, using personal experiences from time spent in nations around the world to stress the importance of global communications. Taylor is a strong supporter of the NJAC, citing the conference has a major benefit for current collegiate students. “This conference creates relationships among young and experienced people,” Taylor said. “It gives them access to new ideas, as well as an opportunity to share new ideas with others in the field. But most of all I believe it helps understand this big picture. A lot of times when we study the small part of communications, whereas a conference like this allows us to look at all topics, allowing us to really see the interconnectedness in all issues of communications.” According to the United States Department of Labor, Jobs within the communication field are among the fastest developing professions in the U.S., with certain factions expecting nearly 25 percent growth by 2020, according to the United States Department of Labor. Yet current curriculum for CCM students majoring in communications is primarily focused on liberal arts concentrated content,
which Taylor said can be both positive and negative.“Communication is an incredibly broad field with multiple theories and multiple perspectives,” Taylor said. “I think you need your own department to be able to go deep into those areas. The ability to critically analyze, write and argue will help a communication degree drawing from liberal arts. I believe it makes it stronger, but its time for disciplinary identification of communication as separate body of knowledge.” While rumors regarding plans for a CCM communication department have circulated for some time, one of the faculty members responsible for the expansion confirmed plans for curriculum change. “We expect to have the communication department up and running by fall of 2013,” said Dr. Matthew Jones, a CCM assistant professor and NJCA member. “[CCM communication department faculty] are still working on details and developing courses, but at this point it’s mostly just setting priorities.” No timetable has been given for an official announcement regarding the communication department expansion.

Chivalry not dead: Cafeteria employees shed light on student behavior BY BRIAN CAPRIOLA News Editor
Although County College of Morris students must adhere to certain behavioral responsibilities mandated by state and federal laws, maintaining a strong decorum is not a required element outlined in the school’s code of conduct policy, according to the 2013 student handbook. Yet the majority of CCM students are generally well-mannered and polite, as suggested from a recent Youngtown Edition study. “I have never had a problem with a student in the 31 years I’ve been here,” said Linda Turner, a student center cafeteria employee at CCM. “My experience with students has always been very pleasant, ranging from enjoyable
small talk to questions about my health when absent.” Statistics showed findings from the observations of 100 CCM members during peak hours of cafeteria activity, as well as interactions and responses to services provided by cafeteria employees. Research showed 68 percent of individuals expressed positive verbal or nonverbal responses, with 25 percent offering impartial or no acknowledgement to the employee. Only 7 percent of students responded in a rude or offensive manner. “Sometimes [students] have only 15 minutes break from class and are in a rush,” said Gary Lis, a CCM Quizno’s employee. “Every once in a while a student will break the norm and not be polite, but then again they are paying
customers. Manners are appreciated but not expected.” Other components of the study included identifying student responses to kind gestures and friendly greetings, as 30 student reactions were recorded throughout two separate scenarios. Of the 30 students that had a door held open by another student, 85 percent expressed graciousness, either verbally or nonverbally. Statistics among those observed from the friendly greeting scenario were less positive. Only 55 percent either reciprocated the greeting or acknowledged the greeter favorably; moreover, a student among the 45 percent who did not respond verbally or nonverbally said this can possibly be attributed to stresses of higher education.
“It kind of took me off guard a bit,” said Ashley Constandi, a 23-year-old student from Garwood, N.J. “I don’t think it was my intention to ignore or be rude. My mind is all over the place right now with school and work, just a lot going on right now. I’d say I’m generally a friendly person that just didn’t feel like being the least bit social at the time.” A similar study conducted recently at Jersey City State University indicated a less positive response to kind gestures than CCM students, as only 40 percent of the 20 JCSU students acknowledged or reciprocated the friendly greeting. Statistics from the door holding scenario showed 70 percent of students responded favorably or showed gratitude, with 25 percent offering no verbal or non-
verbal response. “I think it’s a bit of a different atmosphere here,” said Michelle Nahrwold, one of the JCSU students that conducted the study. “[JCSU] is located in extremely diverse Hudson County where the primary language of many households is something other than English. It’s possible that these cultural differences may sometimes result in barriers between students, which at times make certain students appear rude or impolite.” “I understand ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ may not be universal in all languages,” Nahrwold said. “But politeness can be expressed in both verbal or nonverbal forms.”

‘Metamorphosis’: Behind the scenes of CCM’s fashion show BY CAROL BERMUDEZ ENAMORADO Managing Editor
Fashion design students at County College of Morris prepare during spring semester for the 10th annual fashion show held on May 2. This year it’s titled “Metamorphosis” to showcase design and garment construction skills as well as uniqueness and execution. “Fashion is self expression,” said Anthony Antignani, 20, fashion design and business administration major at CCM. “I want to make others feel the best they can feel in my pieces.” Antignani, a headliner in this year’s fashion show. His line is inspired by nature, his future plans to one day be on the red carpet, and his fine arts creative side. So you will see faux-fur, leather and feathers, along with red carpet type dresses and sculptural pieces. He wants to establish his name and one day own his own fashion house. “My reputation is the most important thing to me as a designer,” Antignani said. “I would hate to put something out there, put my name behind it and be embarrassed.” Valerie Lopez, 20, fashion design student and headliner at CCM, is inspired by interpreting fashion in her own way. “My line is very simple and chic, with very neutral colors,” Lopez said. “It’s a lot of my style and a lot of me goes into my pieces.”
“It’s a collection of what I’ve been doing at CCM,” she said. “It’s an 8-garment selection, I want my models to be comfortable so they can execute effectively my pieces at the showcase.” “When I make original pieces and I make a mistake, I embrace the mistake. A rip in a dress can turn into an original, unseen design,” said Kyle Toomer, 21, fashion design student and headliner at CCM. “The one thing that matters to me the most is that people see my vision, I know there is an audience out there that wants a certain look that they’ve yet to find,” Toomer said. “ I want to create it. And I want to make people smile.” “I was really excited, now I am beyond stressed,” Toomer said. “I have to get close to a dozen new models to walk down a runway and I’m also handling the music. The excitement will return the second the show is over.” “The success of the fashion show will mean that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to,” Toomer said. “My line this year is all spandex,” said Nan Shoenfelt, an adjunct math professor and non-matriculated student at CCM. “Most people think of spandex as a tight form-fitting fabric that only those with the perfect body can wear. But is it a very flow-y fabric that can be worn in many ways.” The day of the fashion show will be a special day for Shoen-
felt. This will be the launch for her new website, with hopes to have a Facebook page established with a lot of pictures to start piecing together a presence. As a headliner, she will also have her two daughters model in her showcase. “My kids are totally there to support me. It’s better than Mother’s Day,” Shoenfelt said. “ I am both excited and stressed, its wonderful to see the amazing talents of the CCM students.” “Fashion is art in motion, an embodiment of humanity itself and a form of art present throughout society,” said Cheryl Lin, 21, fashion design student at CCM. “I hope people will be able to see me (my personality) in every garment I have constructed.” For Lin’s collection, she has included a lot of glittery and colorful garments. Some are sexy, girly, and playful, while others are kind of casual and unisex. Lin said everything inspires her from big city fashion shows to people she sees out in the street and sometimes, even food. “Its really a lot of responsibility to take,” Lin said. “From trying to make all the garments in such a short period of time, to taking care of all the models with hair and makeup.” “This fashion show is the first ‘professional’ show I have ever participated in.” Lin said. “I believe this is a great opportunity for me to improve my abilities and prepare for the future. It means a lot to me.”

Designer Anthony Antignani fits his model, Tressy C. Dumas. The show “Metamorphosis” will be divided into three categories. “Futures” consisting of one or two pieces, “Undercards” with four to six pieces, and “Headliners,” a full collection of eight or more garments. This year’s headliners are Anthony Antignani, Alexa Buonpastore, Cherly Lin, Val-
erie Lopez, Nan Shoenfelt, Julexy Lopez, Jennifer Turcios, Ananda Vandensteen, Kyle Toomer, and Fashion Club’s Vice President Katy Hopkins. The highlight for the student designers will be finding out who earned the honor of closing the show for the quality of his or her line.
