The company hasn’t specified what type of fuel the aircraft uses. A regular driver’s license is all you need to drive the aircraft on the streets, but a pilot’s license is required to go airborne. The Transition Roadable Aircraft will cost an estimated $279,000 when it goes into full production. Terrafugia is taking orders already; all that’s needed is a refundable $10,000 deposit.

It’s about time that all those fancy gadgets seen in the “Back to the Future” movies came to real life. The Transition Roadable Aircraft was the must-see spectacle at this year’s New York International Auto Show. The vehicle drew large crowds even though it never took to the sky. The aircraft was thoughtup and produced by Terrafugia, a company founded in 2006 by award-winning MIT-trained aeronautical engineers. These same people also happen to love aviation. And thus the “flying car” was born. The vehicle is more aircraft than car, which definitely gets odd looks driving down the street. CCM alumna Amanda Von Goetz

Driven. Determined. Highly motivated. Goal orientated. That is how Jeffrey Jones, CCM math professor, describes 29-year-old Amanda Von Goetz. Jones said she took his basic statistics, statistics and applied calculus classes a few years ago and earned an A in every single one. Von Goetz was homeschooled in math in high school, so earning those grades left an impression on Jones. Jones said for someone to do that well who has not taken a math class in almost seven years and was

home-schooled, he knew he had an extraordinary student in Von Goetz. Recently, Jones wrote a recommendation letter for her to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jones said the recommendation process for MIT brought back memories of writing research papers in college, but she deserved all the effort he could possibly give. Of course, this is a long way from where she started, but Von Goetz was destined for success from a very young age. Von Goetz was born in Seoul, Korea, but was adopted at 9 months old by a

family in Mendham, N.J. Her father is of German descent, and her mother is of Assyrian descent, so she always referred to her home as the United Nations of New Jersey. At the age of 4, Von Goetz took an interest in the piano. She was walking around the house aimlessly and out of sheer curiosity began to tinker with the keys of the household piano. Her mother signed her up for lessons and then began her journey to becoming a professional pianist. Von Goetz won the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra young artists auditions and signed with

International Creative Management when she was just 14 years old. Words like ‘prodigy’ began to be associated with her. Most of Von Goetz’s teenage years were spent traveling the world playing the piano. She played in Russia, Germany, England, Columbia and Spain, just to name a few. Von Goetz has fond memories of Russia and Columbia especially. “Visiting Russia when you speak the language is a very different experience, so I treasured my time there,” Von Goetz said. “The Republic of Columbia was another favorite, purely CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Water main break causes shutdown at CCM BRENDAN FERRIS Contributor

If you were on campus on May 9, you know about the water main break that caused classes to be canceled. For many, this was a breath of fresh air. But in order to get off the campus you had to wait at least 25 minutes and put up with the frustration of hundreds of eager young drivers looking for the fastest way out of the school. This brings to attention the question of whether CCM administrators could have handled the evacu-

ation in a more efficient manner. “It was like 1, 2, 3 go,” Molly Smith, a student at the college, said. “If it was a serious situation, we all would have been screwed.” Dr. Bette Simmons, vice president of the Office of Student Development and Enrollment Management, felt that creating a generic evacuation plan would be a difficult task. Unforeseeable circumstances occur in every evacuation that need to be taken into account. “We recognize we could have gone about it in a different way and we

have talked about other options,” Simmons said. “If we could have dismissed people in stages it would have been more manageable.” The Titan Alert system is great. Receiving a text telling you major campus updates is more effective than having to hear news through word of mouth or e-mail. In serious situations, however, the school should have well-organized evacuation plans to keep the process as quick and efficient as possible. The free-for-all where everyone is racing to his or her own car should be avoided at all costs.

Just getting by in life can be a huge challenge these days. Add obtaining a college education to the mix, and the challenge becomes almost impossible. Most students who attend college, especially county colleges, work at least part-time and some work full-time jobs. Trying to manage your education, job, and maintaining a social life is something that all young adults struggle with. Online classes and proper scheduling can relieve some of the burden and free up time to spend with significant others. Taking online classes can make a huge difference and are actually preferred by most students. One of the strongest advantages with online classes is the flexibility. Even students attending a school who have a long commute can decrease their awayfrom-home hours by taking a few classes online. Doing school assignments in the morn-

ing before work and in the evenings after your shift can be a very healthy option. Because of the nature of an online education, students can work at their own pace with set deadlines. It will be challenging, but finishing assignments in your free time and at your own command can make a difference. It is the difference between sitting alone at home or being free the one day that your significant other is finally available. Whether you use an online calendar, a paper calendar or a spiral notebook, the importance of knowing when assignments are due is always monumental. If you are offered an extra-credit assignment, you will be able to figure out if you have time to take care of it. Also, you will know ahead of time if you and your friends can take a trip to the beach for the weekend. Instead of sitting in a classroom that is like watching paint dry, why not take your time and complete it at home on your computer.

because it is just a different side of life there.” Due to extensive traveling, Von Goetz and her parents had to make a difficult decision when she was just a freshman in high school. Mendham High School had a very strict attendance policy and Von Goetz exceeded the absence limit by October. Von Goetz and her parents made the decision to leave the school and that she would be home schooled for the remainder of high school. “I felt it was the right move to make because I was traveling so much,” Von Goetz said. “At a very young age, I had many people in my life who depended on me, so we had to make that decision almost as a team.” While Von Goetz was being home schooled she had a tutor she worked with once in a while, but mostly it was left up to young Von Goetz herself. Later on she did a correspondence program with a school in Florida where she would mail in tests and papers. Von Goetz became a very independent learner from this, which would eventually benefit her in the future. After high school, Von Goetz attended Juilliard where she received her bachelor’s in music. A smile began to surface when Von Goetz talked about Juilliard. Not because of fondness, but because she expended three times more energy coming up with ways to get out of class than she did on her actual work there. “I was the worst student in the history of the world when I was there,” Von Goetz said. “I was living my teenage years a little delayed because I worked very hard during those years, so I needed a break.”

Aside from Von Goetz living out her delayed frivolous adolescent years at Juilliard, she learned an invaluable lesson while she was there. At the time, Von Goetz was dating a Russian violinist. One day she said that she would love to learn to speak Russian to be able to talk to his mom, who did not speak English very well. He turned to her and said that Russian was too hard of a language for her to learn. At that moment Von Goetz questioned what her former boyfriend thought of her. Even more significant, what she thought of herself. “Am I the kind of person that would actually say, ‘oh yeah you’re probably right,’” Von Goetz said. “And then I thought ‘no, actually, I’m not, you’re not right.’” Von Goetz made a bet with her former boyfriend that she would speak it fluently in one year. After the year was over she was holding conversations with native speakers. Von Goetz said that setting that goal and being so motivated to accomplish it was a life changer for her. Von Goetz realized she could accomplish anything with that raw ambition. Following her years at Juilliard, Von Goetz began to lose interest in playing the piano and wanted to pursue another career path—business administration. Von Goetz realized she needed a quantitative background in order to earn a master in business administration and that is when she sought out CCM. Von Goetz thought CCM was perfect for her at the time because, economically, it would allow her to take a few classes and allow her curiosity to run free on

certain subjects that piqued her interest. During her time there, she took a few math courses online, taught herself computer programming, and started building her first Internet business called GVG Studios—a business where Von Goetz would provide other businesses with the technological advantage it needs to sell its products. “I didn’t see the light of day for about maybe two years,” Von Goetz said. “I worked around the clock, seven days a week. I don’t know where it came from but I just felt fueled.” CCM permitted Von Goetz to start part two of her life. No one there knew she was a professional pianist, and she could finally be someone different than the person she had been for her entire life. A feeling of relief was in her voice as she talked about her newfound identity that she discovered there. Von Goetz was also appreciative of Professor Jeffrey Jones for his doubtless belief in her, which, to her, was another life changing event. Von Goetz and Jones remain in contact today and have built a strong friendship from her experience at the college. Von Goetz achieved all the goals she set for herself at CCM and now had the quantitative background she needed to take the next step—acquiring the M.B.A. After refining her first business and later launching another Internet business called Notes On the Road, she felt she had the advantage she needed to be accepted to the prestigious MIT. On Feb. 6, 2012 at approximately 7 p.m., Von Goetz found out she had just been accepted.

The switch from print to Internet news and social media is in full swing

NICHOLAS CIRILLO Contributor

August Paule, a Montclair State University student, celebrated his 22 birthday Sunday and was hoping to wake up to multiple cards, phone calls and text messages wishing him a happy birthday, but instead he fell victim to this generation’s new form of communication… social media. The place where our voices are heard through a status update and our friends are people we may have never met in person. “I only received one phone call and seven text messages, but had 194 people post on my Facebook wall, and out of those people, there was only one that I ever met in person,” Paule said. “Every family member that is on Facebook posted to my wall, but never called or sent me a text.” According to a survey published in December 2011 by Ovum Research about the impact of social media on traditional forms of communication, 40 percent of the people questioned no longer own a land-line phone and reduced their usage of mobile calling devices because they use social networking websites to stay connected to friends and family instead. What happens if there is a family emergency and your computer crashes before you get the

notification? The use of land-line phone service is not the only one suffering from the usage explosion of social media. Newspaper companies are trying to combat their losses in print and convert into online publications. The change has not been as successful as they hoped though. As of May 2011, only 25 percent of the U.S. population was still reading newspapers in print form, but the amount of online users that visited current events and global news sites was only 2.6 percent, according to the State Of The Media: The Social Media Report Q3 2011, a yearly survey done by Neilsen. According to the study, Facebook has 845 billion active users, 57 percent of which talk to people more online than in person. This statistic is probably one of the more disturbing ones because it shows where society is headed. Without face-to-face communication, how will we survive as a whole? There will be a time when someone does not have a computer or smartphone attached to them, and will have to speak. Will they remember how to? Face-to-face communication is how we learn how to interact with all different types of people, how we learn about ourselves and how we make close friendships as children. With the heavy use of internet social apps by younger generations, many will be shoved into the “real world” and be dumbfounded at their first job interview because “LOL” will not work in that setting. What will they do then?

Increase in enrollment for food stamps

RICKI SANCHEZ Contributor

One in seven Americans relies on food stamps, according to the Wall Street Journal. People who rely on food stamps are considered to be below the poverty threshold or poverty line, which is decided by the Census Bureau each year. The amount of people that have enrolled in the federal food stamp program, formally known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, has increased in recent times. This increase can be contributed to the loss of stable jobs, natural disasters and possibly President Obama. In New Jersey, which was ranked number two in household income two years ago, more than 400,000 households receive food stamps, according to the Star Ledger. This rise in recipients has increased since the beginning of the recession in 2007, and still remains at a high level. As of 2010, more than 35 states had at least 10 percent of its population enrolled in the federal food stamp program, including New Jersey. Jobs are hard to come by and even harder to keep with the constant depletion of money from companies nationwide. Often, when a person finds a job, it is a low-paying job that cannot support a family. Food is constantly rising in price, putting more stress on those with little or no money to buy groceries. This leaves them with only a few options, one of which is food stamps. Natural disasters are an as-

pect of life that cannot be controlled and often leaves survivors with nothing. Those affected can enroll in federal aid, such as food stamps, to survive. The process of fixing the damage and rebuilding their lives is arduous and emotionally draining. Federal aid can relieve stress when piecing their lives back together. With the presidential race coming up, criticism of both parties becomes noteworthy. Is Obama to blame for the food stamp increase in America? During a Republican debate in January, Newt Gingrich accused President Barack Obama of being the “food stamp president.” He claimed that more people have been given food stamps since Obama’s presidency than ever before. Apparently Gingrich did not research well. Statistics say that there were about half a million more Americans enrolled to receive food stamps during Bush’s presidency. Though some can still argue that Obama made it easier for Americans to enroll, during his presidency Congress passed a spending bill of $80.4 billion for food stamps. This has increased the average monies given to a family, making it more appealing. Food stamps have been part of government aid since 1939 and have served Americans who have needed it for decades. The program has experienced negative responses and cutbacks throughout its years, but still remains an important facet of government aid. It is re-assurance that even in the toughest times, there is hope.

The inspiration behind this hairstyle was an elegant woman who pinned her hair without much thought, but looks all the more stylish for doing so. It doesn’t matter if it is a fishtail braid or braided up-do, all should be cohesive and look effortless and undone. The look should pose a handcrafted quality and a style nobody has seen before. Statement accessories are a great way to add some glamour to any low-key style. This summer’s major accessory is headbands. Celebrities have been photographed with braided, studded, and stretch headbands. The most fashionable trend in 2012 would be the ombre. Currently, the trend is at its peak. For those who don’t know, the word ombre is French meaning shading. Ombre hair is normally darker at the roots and gradually gets lighter. Celebrities like Eva Longoria, Jessica Biel, and Lauren Conrad have all been seen sporting

Previous hairstyles and trends consisted of short hair, bangs, and bobs. This summer’s trends are all about a low-maintenance, low-key, messy look. First seen on the runway, the urban wave is gaining a great deal of popularity. The loose louche curve in the hair is made to look effortless and look as if the models did it themselves. Some stylists agree the urban wave is similar to the beach wave, but other professionals say the main difference is the beach wave is messier. Perfect for medium to long length hair, the urban wave is a simple and quick sultry look. The hairstyle only requires a rough blow dry, subtle curl with the iron, and raking through with hands to create the right amount of undone-ness. It’s a street-ready style designed to look chic and effortless. Braids received a graceful makeover for the spring. Projected to be one of the most popular trends for summer, the braid can

this trend. Clients like the ombre because of the drastic variation of colors and shading that can be acquired. Whether you go for an extreme two-toned look or a subtle style, the ombre is a great choice. The copper ombre is extremely subtle for brunettes who want to attain butterscotch, golden copper, or an apricot color. For more dramatic hair and for those women who want to follow in the footsteps of Katy Perry, color dimensions and the rainbow ombre are options. The rainbow consists of color dunking the end of the hair into various different colors. Bold vibrant colors like pink, purple, and teal are the most popular among women in their 20s. 100 years to remember

KELSEY ZIGARELLI Contributor

April 15, 1912 is the day that a famous ship sunk in the Atlantic Ocean. The Titanic was the biggest ship of her time, and it was popular before it ever even set sail. The ship also had a broad range of people on board including the wealthiest, who stayed on the top levels, and the poorer people--mostly immigrants--, who stayed in the steerage. 2,223 people were aboard the ship and only enough life boats and vests for half of the passengers. The boat was practically destined for failure. The evening of April 15, 2012

at 11:40 p.m. the ship hit an iceberg. Within three hours of hitting that iceberg the Titanic sank to the bottom of the ocean. Many innocent souls were lost on that day; out of the 2,223 people on the boat, 1,517 died. People try to tell the story, but no one has told it as well as James Cameron did, when his movie Titanic hit theaters. The movie’s lifetime gross has brought in over $1.9 trillion worldwide. In honor of the 100-year anniversary, Paramount Production has brought the movie back to theaters. However, this time it is in 3-D. A lot of people are debating on whether or not to spend the $13 to see

a movie they have already seen, but it is worth it. This movie feels more real than the first release. When Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and Rose, played by Kate Winslet, are at the tip of the boat leaning over, you feel like you are there with them. It is almost like you are hanging over the boat too. Not only did Cameron and his team change the movie into 3-D, they completely upgraded the actual film quality. Besides a few new CGI scenes, the updated version of the film could compete with any 3-D movie out today in quality. Bottom line, Titanic 3D is well worth the money.

One college football super fan’s adventure to see every FBS team live DANIEL CHARDON Sports editor

Sportscaster Chris Schenkel’s famous catch-phrase was “College football—what better way to spend an autumn afternoon?” Stephen Koreivo couldn’t agree more. Koreivo is the author of “Tales from the Tailgate: From the fan who’s seen them all,” a book about his quest to see every Division I Football Bowl Subdivision team in person. As of 2012 there are 120 Division I FBS teams. It would be easy to think that seeing all these teams live would be nearly impossible, or at the least, take a lot of time and money. It is not as expensive as one might think but it is time consuming. Koreivo begins his chart of teams seen in 1979 with Delaware squaring off against Rhode Island. By the time the 21st century rolled around, he began thinking about exactly how many teams had he seen in person. He figured he had seen half of the Division I teams play and then the craziest thought struck him: why not try and see all the teams play live? Koreivo thought to himself someone had to have try and accomplish this goal before, and if not, then why not me? Since undertaking this selfimposed mission, Koreivo has done meticulous planning on what teams to see and what is the best way to get there. “It isn’t the quantity but quality of teams that I’m looking for,” he said. Some might question why go through all the trouble of trying to see every Division I college football team live. Koreivo loves the atmosphere. “[It’s] the old fashioned thinking, the spirit of the game, tradition, passion and the tailgating.” He said he spends about a $1000 a year on his adventures. But sometimes he gets a helping hand from the least expected place. One memorable instance came from Sports Information

Director at the University of Colorado Dave Plati. Plati had read about Koreivo’s pursuit in a preseason college football primer and realized that he had never seen Colorado or Colorado State play. Plati extended an invitation to watch the two teams play in their annual Rocky Mountain Showdown. Koreivo had to respectfully decline but it is situations like this that helped him reach his goal. Being a super fan for over 30 years, Koreivo has seen lots of changes in the sport and some not for the better. Talking about disparity within the college football rankings, he said “recruiting and coaching are more important. Tradition is out the window.” You would think that someone who has been watching the game for so long and has seen so many teams play in-person, he would get asked all kinds of football questions. And you would be wrong too. Koreivo said one the question he gets asked most frequently is “Are you married?” The question always makes him chuckle because he has been married over 20 years. His wife has dubbed herself “Saint Laurie” for enduring his crazy passion. The great part is that is that he turned his family onto watching college football also. His wife travels with him sometimes, as well as his two children. His kids also ended up partly choosing their college destinations based off the football program. Starting in 2012, four teams will be added to the Division I FBS so Koreivo has to gear up again this upcoming season to check them all off his list. With the frequency teams are being added and moved around, Koreivo might be on his quest for a long time. To keep track of what games Koreivo will be attending this fall, you can follow him on his website www.collegefootballfan. com.

For many young people, politics seems like an old-timer’s sport. This is not the case with William “Hank” Lyon, the youngest Morris County Freeholder ever who assumed the position March 9 at the age of 24. Before Lyon ran for freeholder, he started a group called the Young Conservative Leaders. The organization was created to transition young conservatives into politics. Lyon plans to go back to school locally and attain his graduate degree while staying active in his political role. The freeholder position is part-time so most freeholders also have full-time jobs. Lyon works for his family’s business of real estate and restaurant ventures. “I think most young people think they can’t do it for say, ten years; they need to think big,” said Lyon. “As young people we have our entire future ahead of us, that should be a great incentive to become involved.” There are many different committees and commissions at the local level that young individuals can volunteer for such as environment, historic, library, and fair housing committees. Lyon is one of seven Morris

county government. Freeholders directly control six departments in the county including the county library, county roads, the planning and development department, general administration and public works. This year three freeholders will be up for reelection, two of whom decided not to run again. Freeholders appoint the majority of trustees of the County College of Morris. Lyon and fellow freeholder Thomas Mastrangelo are the liaisons to the CCM. It is the liaison’s job to attend the board of trustee meetings and report on the actions of the college to the county. “If there is an issue between the county and CCM, I’m the point person,” Lyon said. Freeholders do not have any enhanced power other than board members, but they do regulate county college funding. CCM receives over $11 million annually in funding from Morris County’s operating budget. If the county pulled the funding from the college, tuition prices would increase tremendously. The Morris County capital budget appropriated an additional $8.5 million last December for CCM. Renovations to roads,

walkways, parking lots and retaining walls will cost $3 million, lighting improvements will cost $2 million, another $1 million for academic building modifications and $3 million for heating and air conditioning system repairs. The entire expense for capital projects is estimated to be $185.6 million for Morris County between the years 2012-2017. “If you turn off the television and you listen to a lot of leaders— more at the national level but really any level of talk—they’re always saying things like ‘we have to do this for our children and our grandchildren,’” said Lyon. “The way I look at it, we are the grandchildren. We don’t need an intermediary and these problems are enormous and we’re going to have to solve them in the end.”

A Guide to Healthy Habits for Cleaner Water Pollution on streets, parking lots and lawns is washed by rain into storm drains, then directly to our drinking water supplies and the ocean and lakes our children play in. Fertilizer, oil, pesticides, detergents, pet waste, grass clippings: You name it and it ends up in our water. Stormwater pollution is one of New Jersey’s greatest threats to clean and plentiful water, and that’s why we’re all doing something about it. By sharing the responsibility and making small, easy changes in our daily lives, we can keep common pollutants out of stormwater. It all adds up to cleaner water, and it saves the high cost of cleaning up once it’s dirty. As part of New Jersey’s initiative to keep our water clean and plentiful and to meet federal requirements, many municipalities and other public agencies including colleges and military bases must adopt ordinances or other rules prohibiting various activities that contribute to stormwater pollution. Breaking these rules can result in fines or other penalties. Easy Things You Can Do Every Day To Protect Our Water: Properly use and dispose of hazardous products -Hazardous products include some household or commercial cleaning products, lawn and garden care products, motor oil, antifreeze, and paints. - Do not pour any hazardous products down a storm drain because storm drains are usually connected to local waterbodies and the water is not treated. As a resident, business, or other member of the New Jersey community, it is important to know these easy things you can do every day to protect ourwater. Limit your use of fertilizers and pesticides - Do a soil test to see if you need a fertilizer. - Do not apply fertilizers if heavy rain is predicted. - Look into alternatives for pesticides. - Maintain a small lawn and keep the rest of your property or yard in a natural state with trees and other native vegetation that requires little or no fertilizer. - If you use fertilizers and pesticides, follow the instructions on the label on how to correctly apply it - Keep leaves and grass out of storm drains. - If your municipality or agency has yard waste collection rules, follow them. - Use leaves and grass clippings as a resource for compost. - Use a mulching mower that recycles grass clippings into the lawn. - Clean up after your pet - Don’t feed wildlife - Do not feed wildlife, such as ducks and geese, in public areas. -Many municipalities and other public agencies must enact and enforce a rule that prohibits wildlife feeding in these areas. Some colleges prepare for a complete zombie takeover

NOZOMBIESALLOWED.WORDPRESS.COM

STEVEN LUNDELL contributer

A virus has completely devastated over 1000 college campuses throughout the world and is spreading rapidly. At this point in time we know of only one method of killing the creatures: Nerf Guns. Be on guard of anyone who may have been infected with the virus. If you find yourself in a threatening position please do not hesitate to act. This is not a test, nor is it a joke. We as a species are overwhelmed. Humans vs. Zombies, the war has begun. The game Humans vs. Zombies was created in the fall of 2005 at Goucher College by Chris Weed and Brad Sappington. After the word spread bogus “H1Z1” zombie virus around the area, Weed and Sappington created a website which led to the games popularity in over 1000 colleges

in across six continents. The object of the game is to kill the zombies and survive the H1Z1 outbreak. However, the game is open-ended so each school playing can add their own rules. The humans identify themselves by wearing a bandana on their upper arm, and the zombies identify themselves by wearing a bandana as a headband. If the zombies tag the humans, the humans become a zombie. On the other hand if the humans shoot the zombie with their Nerf Gun the zombie is stunned for a certain amount of time. The game is played in two parts, Survival and Missions. The missions are used to get participation in the game, whether playing or watching, and the winning side can win power-ups depending on how the college plays their game. Survival is pretty self-explanatory, just survive.

There are “safe zones,” but when you are not in those zones watch out, if you’re tagged outside the safe zone welcome to the zombie side. New Social Engine at both Fairleigh Dickinson University and Drew University has hosted HVZ at their campuses for the past two years. Kristen Smith, a senior at Fairleigh Dickinson University and president of FDU’s chapter of New Social Engine, described HVZ as “Basically a glorified game of tag, with some added accessories. There are obvious precautions that are to be used, for example, Nerf guns have the ability to be modified meaning that they shoot farther with a power powerful shot. What we do is we check the guns to make sure they are safe. As for what type of guns, there are all different types they can possibly use, meaning small pump guns,

or perhaps bigger automatic guns. We let them get creative so long as they do not cause harm.” But with the rising concern of college shootings the issue of using guns as weapons in the game has been brought to the attention of several colleges, including Goucher College, the first college to play HVZ. “We aren’t telling anyone to go out and shoot people, or hit people with socks, or anything like that. It is literally tag, with soft foam bullets and socks. We have very dedicated players. This semester is a bit of a smaller group but they are a group of extremely involved in the game. Past semesters we have had over 100 students playing and wholeheartedly in this to win. Overall, the game really takes to the students playing and they enjoy it,” Smith said in reaction to the concern of gun use. However some colleges aren’t on the same page about the topic. “Obviously gun violence is a concern after the past college shootings,” said Don Phelps, associate director of campus life at CCM. “The students could always replace the guns with dodge balls or something but it does sound like a fun thing for students and a great way for them to interact. Assassin was played on campus 9 years ago.” Although it may sound childish to run after each other with Nerf Guns, it’s definitely something you should get involved in if you can. Not only does it help you meet people it’s also a great way to get involved at your college.

Skinny doesn’t always mean healthy HOLLY A. SCHNEIDER Contributor

Whenever we think healthy, we tend to automatically think of weight loss. Though maintaining a healthy weight is very important to avoid things such as high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, it is not the only important factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In order for you to be confident in your physical appearance, you must be functioning well internally. The truth is that cancer, organ failure and other medical conditions don’t care how pretty you look, how perfect your tan is or how you can fit into size 2 pants for the first time in your life. These are all non-essential features because if your insides aren’t taken care of, your physical appearance will only provide you with temporary happiness until health problems inevitably catch up with you. Diet pills and cigarettes are good examples of quick fixes for weight loss and curbing an appetite, but do so at the cost of your health. The phrases “It’s great, I’m not even hungry” or “I can’t quit smoking because I’ll gain back all the weight I lost” are often used as excuses to continue these unhealthy habits. Rather than constantly giving an excuse, try asking this question: “What is the top priority?” In order to create a healthy lifestyle, you must consider three things: how active you are, what you put into your body, and last, but certainly not least, your mental health. BE ACTIVE: Even if you walk in between classes or park farther away from the shopping mall, these little efforts will get your blood flowing. Try waking up earlier to jog for a few min-

utes each day. You can challenge yourself by increasing the time and/or distance. Upping the intensity of your workout is a good way to insure that you don’t plateau and get stuck at a certain weight. Physical health directly affects mental health. The endorphins from exercise, whether it be a brisk walk or a lengthy run, should noticeably boost your mood. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT: The basic food pyramid has not changed much since it was created in the early 90s, but what has changed are the ingredients and quality of food. The biggest challenge today is that everyone is always in a rush and subsequently tend to reach for foods that are fastest to get and to eat. However, what may be convenient is not always good for our bodies. We have to be careful because many things that are put on the market as “health foods” are often quite the opposite. A good guideline to follow is if you cannot pronounce an ingredient that is contained in the item, it’s probably not good for you. Many times we find these ingredients in pre-packaged and processed foods. If you research them, you will find that they are often chemicals and man-made substances, none of which are nutritious or safe for us to consume. From now on, think before you eat because you are, in fact, what you eat. Feeding our bodies harmful chemicals and ingredients because we like the superficial results or because they taste good is a dangerous way of life. Aim to be physically fit instead of the often desired “skinny.” If you take care of your body, it will take care of you in return.

Mainstream music meets Indie-Rock

KALAH MCLAUGHLIN Contributor

Indie-Rock seems to be the polar opposite from mainstream Pop and Rap on the music spectrum. However, lately the genres appear to be sliding closer and closer together. It takes a true indie rocker to even notice the difference when Nikki Minaj takes a backseat to Gotye. All mainstream guppies know is what songs made the top 10 countdown and what songs need to be downloaded to iTunes. When it comes to indie rockers, a fine line can be drawn between wanting others to realize your music isn’t “weird” but rather based on music theory instead of synthesizers, while at the same time wanting to keep Indie favorites in a little box so they don’t become sell-outs. This was apparent when people with “Bieber fever” started downloading Vampire Weekend, M83 and The Black Keys. These bands first made

HONEYMP3.COM

appearances in commercials, receiving decent attention before completely blowing up on the radio. Once the transition from Indie to sell out occurs, it leaves the rockers with little hope. It just so happens that when success hits, the record label changes the band into something different from what the band originally intended. The bands then lose the appeal that made them unique to begin with. While it is certainly uplifting when Bon Iver and The Middle East receive play-time in movies, indie rockers seem to wait, with bated breath, for the wave of attention to pass without dire consequences to the band’s image. It would be a harmonious world if we could filter the radio of Katy Perry and One Direction and pump in more songs by The Givers and Yellow Ostrich. Although I don’t think Bjork will be taking Katy Perry’s reign any time soon, an Indie take over is coming sooner rather than later despite the objections of Indie die-hards everywhere.

with Nanophosphate technology. Driving range using the battery is up to 50 miles. No gas mileage is given for Sport Mode. Not only is Fisker helping the environment but it is doing it in style. The design for Karma, as described on their website, was inspired by “windswept sand dunes and the muscular grace of a cheetah.” It makes for a sleek and elegant look that captures true luxury in a car. Ford shocked many in attendance with the redesigned 2013 Taurus. The new Taurus is more muscular looking with sharper angles to give it a more aggressive look. This not your run-of-the-mill generic family sedan anymore, the Taurus looks to revolutionize the sedan market. New sharp lines on the hood lead to the Taurus’s new, bold grill. The car also sports a new, unique spoiler that is sporty looking and also helps stability and gas efficiency. The Taurus probably got the makeover to compete with Dodge’s midsize sedan, the Charger. Since its inception, the Charger possessed certain aggressiveness in its appearance and it seems Ford is bringing the fight to Dodge after remodeling the Taurus. One place where Ford still holds the advantage over Dodge is the truck market. Dodge is looking to change that with the 2013 Dodge Ram. The Ram 1500 is both beautiful and powerful. Dodge’s motto for the Ram is “Hard charging power, easy-going gas mileage.” The Ram is the only pickup to achieve 20 mpg highway use for its entire light pickup lineup.

That’s quite an achievement considering how important gas mileage has become. In keeping with Dodge’s tradition of aggressive looking vehicles, the Ram’s front grille is quite monstrous. The Ram comes in nine different trims but the best is probably the Ram Longhorn. Clad in a full chrome wraparound bumper and chrome grill, the Longhorn has “look at me” presentation. The Ram also comes optionally with a 5.7L V-8 Hemi engine that puts out 390 horsepower. While not quite as powerful as the original 426 Hemi engine, the name carries a lot of heritage and provides comfort knowing extra power is there when needed. One of the criticisms of pickup trucks is that they aren’t comfortable to ride in. Advances in technology have quieted those slams but Dodge may have finally found the solution. The 2013 Ram will be air-ride equipped. What this means is that the suspension on the Ram will be powered by an air pump or compressor providing a smooth, constant ride. For those who actually use the Ram for heavy duty work, it has a 10,450-pound max tow capability. Whether towing cars, industrial materials or a camper, Ram has got it covered. The New York International Auto show is full of innovation, shockers and excitement. Along with auto makers showcasing next year’s models, other auto industry companies have exhibits as well. DUB magazine, Harley Davidson and Monster Energy are just some of the businesses on display. For car enthusiasts, this is one show that is a must see.
