PreSchool of the Month MARIA MONTESSORI PRESCHOOL Maria Montessori Preschool has been providing excellence in education and care to children aged 3 to 5 years in the Monash area and surrounding suburbs since 1977. It offers a unique program to children and families utilising the Montessori methods to extend children’s learning as well as incorporating child led play resulting in spontaneous as well as purposeful activities. This is conducted in a warm respectful and responsive environment that is safe secure and stimulating where children’s self-confidence independence self-identity and well-being is valued and fostered in an inclusive and culturally diverse manner. Specialised Montessori designed didactic materials are utilised to assist children further develop their concentration and self-discipline skills. This encourages them to work at their own pace and to extend their areas of interest. Children engage in four main areas - Practical life, Sensorial, Language and Mathematics. Attention is also paid to the other areas of the Montessori program such as Creative Arts, Music and Movement, Science, Geography and Cultural Studies. The importance of children’s play is acknowledged and a strong emphasis is placed on developing their independence through the everyday life activities that they encounter at home and at preschool. Each child is encouraged to improvise and use their creativity and critical thinking in resolving issues across all areas of social emotional and physical encounters at a pace that is developmentally appropriate. Actively listening and conversing with peers and adults, confidence in sourcing and imparting information and having fun through acting out stories rhymes chants and songs assists the child to extend their social and literacy skills. They express themselves through drawing and art, group and individual reading using phonetics. Writing letters of the alphabet, words and sentences, plus numeracy activities of simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are all part of the Montessori program. These activities are individualised at the child’s level of ‘readiness’. The children become enthusiastic and engaged learners, displaying confidence in their own abilities to undertake life’s challenges. The child’s innate passion for learning is one of the many rewards that our staff experience. The richness of having a very culturally diverse preschool community creates further opportunities to enhance the children’s experiences especially in the areas of general knowledge and geography. A High priority is given to listening to both families and children to ascertain their strengths needs and interests. Special events are offered throughout the year. Harmony Day is a key event in the preschool calendar and highlights the vibrant partnership that is evident between parents and staff.

Care Where Building commences on the new Monash Children’s Hospital
On 15 July 2014, Monash Health celebrated the turning of the first sod, marking the beginning of construction for the new 230bed Monash Children’s Hospital that is located next to the Monash Medical Centre in Clayton and due to open in early 2017. The new Monash Children’s Hospital will ensure more Victorian children and their families can benefit from world-class specialist paediatric services and will include: 96 acute paediatric inpatient beds, 10 paediatric intensive care unit beds, 64 neonatal care beds, 20 same day oncology
beds and many more services. At the recent sod-turn event in July the Premier of Victoria Dr Denis Napthine, said the new state-of-the-art facility will allow Monash Health to provide expanded services in a child and family centred environment, delivering an extra 60,000 outpatient treatments each year and providing purpose-built day facilities for children. Heidi Millier, mother of one year old Sonny who was born premature with severe heart and lung problems, also spoke to guests about the importance of a new hospital and how grateful her family is for the care Sonny received. “I used to look at families that were going

It’s Needed through things like this and think ‘how do they do it?’ Those people that spend most of their lives in hospital. Then, 15 months ago we became one of those families,” Heidi said.
“We really value the input and feedback of our consumer advisory panel at all levels because ultimately, it assists in ensuring that our decisions lead to improved outcomes and quality of care for our young patients,” said Kym Forrest, Director Monash Children’s Hospital Project. Gill, a panel member, had her five-month old grandson treated at Monash Children’s Hospital in 2012.

“Right from the start, we felt welcomed and I feel free to express my point of view as a mother and always feel we are being listened to,” said Gill.
Today Sonny and his family are fighting the odds and refusing to give in. Sonny spends his days attached to an oxygen tank, requires 24 hour care and has continued to be treated at Monash Children’s Hospital. “As a parent I don’t think you can imagine anything worse than having a sick child. If only we could trade places with them. Words cannot explain how much we appreciate, respect and are forever grateful to the Monash Children’s Hospital,” Heidi said.
A Community Focus Monash Health is engaging the local community in planning for the new hospital. A consumer advisory panel has been established that includes current and past patients, parents and families meeting with Monash Health planning teams each month.

Being A Parent Parenthood is the most blessed and treasured feeling for a mother and father. All parents would want their child to do their best in all their endeavours of life. However, today the biggest concern of parents is “Will my child grow up to be a good human being?” Well, the answer to this question is with YOU as a parent. Parents need to be friends to their children. This gradually helps in developing the emotional and logical bond which eases all hesitations created due a persistent generation gap. An assertive approach against an aggressive one, is required when your child commits a mistake. Every child has a rebel in them especially in their infant to adolescent days. Parents need to understand that being aggressive or angry at the child can only make them rebellious. By letting your children learn from their mistakes and providing certain leverage will give them a feeling of independence, allowing them to take their own decisions rather than parents always dominating and taking the lead. Similarly, encouraging children even on their smallest achievements helps boost their confidence immensely. Actively involving children in family discussions i.e. monthly savings or monthly budget and household expenses can help in building trust between parents and children. Parents always want their children to have strong principles, morals and values. What are these values and principles? It simply means being truthful to oneself and others. It sounds simple yet the most difficult and challenging task for parents. Children are shadows of their parents. They generally replicate their actions and reactions. This means that parents must consciously focus on inculcating good habits and

mannerisms in their children. Cultivating habits like a daily small prayer in morning and at bed time or simply thanking the Almighty eventually creates a God loving attitude in the child.
Once a month taking the child along with you to an Old Age Home or the Orphanage will make the child realize importance of parents and how blessed they are to have loved ones in their life. Similarly, it shall also create feelings of Humanity and Respect for Elders. Teaching basic mannerisms like a “Thank you” and a “Sorry” goes a long way. An apology when wrong will gradually give your child the courage to fight their ego as they grow and develop a positive self-esteem. Introducing morals like honesty and sincerity helps children in all walks of life. Whether during their nervous times of exams in school or in a competitive career world, these two golden values help to kill the temptation of using deceit and shortcuts to success. Above all, cushioning and reassuring your child with love and support in their tasks and efforts and not imposing your viewpoints and decisions on them will help in the holistic development of your child.
