ello and welcome to the launch issue of Your Fantastic Backyard magazine! Over the past few months my own fantastic backyard has been subjected to a bit of a hammering, firstly frying to a crisp in extreme hot weather, then battered by heavy rain and finally being hit by a tornado that sprang on us at 3am one Sunday morning Editor Penny Barker and left hefty branches of 100-yearold trees snapped off like matchsticks and our neighbour’s boat in an entirely different paddock. The rigours of Australian climatic conditions aside, we love our backyards and love to make them as individual as we are. Increasingly, our backyards are becoming an extension of our living spaces with all the design accoutrements formerly lavished on our interiors, mini-resorts influenced by our travels to exotic destinations or a place to grow healthy fresh herbs and vegetables to feed our families and enhance the flavours of our cooking. Whatever plans you have for your backyard, we’re here to help. Each month, Your Fantastic Backyard will be peeking into celebrity backyards and offering inspiration and tips on backyard design, outdoor entertaining and new products that will lift your outdoor living spaces from so-so to truly fantastic. Above all, the magazine is all about your fantastic backyard so get involved and send us your projects, stories and pics. Perhaps you’ve built a unique shed, cubby house or chook palace, had a backyard disaster or completed a major project you’re proud of? If so, let us know! In the coming months, we’ll be holding some fun competitions with great prizes to be won. To make sure you never miss an issue of Your Fantastic Backyard, visit www.yourfantasticbackyard.com.au to subscribe. A subscription to the magazine also makes a great gift for those hard-to-buy-for friends and relatives. Enjoy!

The same floor surface was used for all these areas to enhance the relationship between them. Elevated above the natural ground level, they offer the best position from which to take in views of the mountains to the west that connect the tree line of the existing eucalypts. In addition to the aforementioned plantings, century plant (Agave attenuata), Florida gardenia (Gardenia augusta ‘Florida’) and dwarf lilly pilly (Acmena smithii ‘Allyn Magic’) were included in the design to provide low-maintenance gardening that suits the clients’ busy lifestyle.

LIGHTEN UP!

Light on Luxury Designed by Ecodesign and constructed by Senator Pools, this spectacular swimming pool features a unique, in-built lounge area which spans one side of the pool for immersive relaxation. Adrian Swain, Director of Ecodesign, says “Our design kept to the brief from Merit Homes, which was to integrate pool and landscape to create a truly unique outdoor living environment, to complement the luxury home. The landscapes beautifully reflect the lines of the house, with glossy green foliage providing a solid background to the bold and contemporary colours in the pool. Low voltage LED garden lighting ensures the landscape design and pool are as dramatic by night as by day. 61

LIGHTEN UP!

Zen Tranquillity Sydney-based landscape design practice Ecodesign brought a true Japanese sense of Zen to the landscapes within the Sekisui House display village located at Kellyville HomeWorld. Says Director Adrian Swain, “The project consists of a village of six homes linked with boardwalk like paths made from bamboo decking. Spectacular, well-detailed and functional outdoor living environments are a feature of each house, their sense of tranquillity highlighted at night by the careful placement of low voltage LED lighting.
