LIVIN’ LARGE

Contemporary, pristine furnishings introduce clean lines and a recurring contrasting color scheme in the living/great room area that sets the tone for the entire home. “This is an open plan, with the dining room, kitchen, great room, and family room all open to each other so each design choice carries into the next space,” expresses Errett-Pikosky. The chenille sofas were designed by Thayer Coggin. White geometric cocktail tables are Clive Daniel Home originals and composed of wood with brushed-gold supports that runs through the bottom of each. Elegant, fabricut contrasting pillows in pleasing patterns bring a touch of dark, inky teal green called Deep Jungle. The Chevron diagonal-cut pile area rug, by Rosecore, was custom made for the room (12-feet wide by 24-feet long) and is colored Platinum. Hued walls, prevalent throughout, are painted Sherwin Williams Drift of Mist while the trey ceilings are extra white. An eye-catching LED-lit floating ring above the dining table is a polished chrome oval ring with crystals that resemble stalagmite.

EASY ENTERTAINING

An extraordinary view of the mangroves through the sliding glass doors creates the backdrop for the great room. The distinctive tilted chairs by RC Furniture are styled in a brushed polyester and rayon fabric. The dining room, visible here, features a wall with two shelves filled with wine bottles and accoutrements while six armchairs, all on coasters, offer plenty of seating and mimic the counter stools in the kitchen. Built-in art niches are papered in the same color as the dining room wall, while puck lighting displays the unique ornaments atop the white shelves. The white oak flooring by LW is in neutral, yet elegant Champagne. All of the accessories are sourced through CDH with emerald green running through the home through vases, pillows, and other curated accessories.

For more than three decades, Bonita Bay has endured as one of the most desirable addresses in Southwest Florida. Conveniently situated between Fort Myers and Naples, Bonita Bay in Bonita Springs presents miles of walking and biking paths, a marina with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico with alluring white sand beaches, natural attractions, and quiet beauty. The Omega Luxury Condominiums are just one of several high-rises in the Bonita Bay community that offer exceptional living in a lavish tropical environment.

Clive Daniel Home (CDH) designers Rebekah Errett-Pikosky and Charlie Hansen came on-board as the design team in 2021 on the 5,725-square-foot, 4 bedroom, 4-1/2 bath model condominium project. “The design style of this high-rise is ‘soft contemporary’,” says Errett-Pikosky, and ‘upscale, livable luxury,’” adds Hansen. Their main goal was to try to make spaces different and individual, whether by incorporating a lighting element, seating arrangement space, or build-in wall details. “When you have condo units with all the same backgrounds to choose from, you want a unique design,” says Errett-Pikosky. Challenges that presented themselves to the design team were specific to condominiums. For example, within the design process, there were restrictions and limitations with the elevator regarding furniture: sizing and deliveries had to be coordinated. “It was also an OSHA-restricted building, so that added challenges,” Errett-Pikosky explains. All in all, however, the project was a successful undertaking, with the final result being truly spectacular.

SERVING UP DELECTABLE DELIGHTS

Enjoying meals in this sensational kitchen is as effortless as the Florida lifestyle. The three stools on either side of the island table are designed with a charcoal metal frame and textured chenille-like fabric. The countertop is white quartz with the kitchen island providing a stunning contrast. Rich stained cabinets are espresso-hued to match the kitchen color palette. Modern whisk lighting, by Eurofase, features a black metal finish. “Every piece ties in with the other,” explains Errett-Pikosky.

TASTEFUL TOUCHES

A closer view of the dining area displays a beautiful space decorated with a custom-designed black and white free-flowing picture crafted by a CDH art vendor—with the unusual dimensions of 24 inches wide by 84 inches high. The dining room table holds a European ceramic tabletop with refractory ends. “Featured on the back wall, which showcases the built-in wine bar with backlit LED lighting, is a mica-flect wallpaper that’s the same as the fireplace wall in the family room which connects the two spaces,” says the designers. Glorious glass candlesticks blend beautifully with the blingy oval lighting ring.

RELAXING IN ELEGANT STYLE

Rich espresso-brown walls, cabinets, and trim on the chairs add charm and personality to the sand-white décor in the family room and showcase the color scheme found throughout the home. The streamlined cushioned sofa is a CDH original, as is the glass-topped center table and dramatic custom-ordered artwork. Floor lamps are designed by John Richard with a polished chrome base and sheer-on-solid boxed lamp shade. Ultra-modern ceiling lighting is three rings by Eurofase in bronze and acrylic. The elongated cabinet against the far wall is also espresso-colored and unique with its niches off to the right. Described by the designers as a gold metal “swoosh” sign, this attention-getting element is perched atop the cabinet and contrasts the custom-made art. Sitting next to the sofa is a glass and metal end table.

OFFICE CHIC

Taking care of business has never been so functional—or fashionable! Built with a distinctive component of the bookshelves wrapping around the corner wall, the office is an exceptional environment for work, or any activity. The sleek-looking stained maple desk is by Huppe which is placed on top of the intriguing swirl-design wool and silk area rug in charcoal, caramel, ivory, and light gray. The rug is a Clive Daniel Home original, one of many they offer. “We have an extensive rug department,” points out Errett-Pikosky. The built-in behind the desk, which maintains the open, three-shelving theme, is designed intentionally darker than the desk for interest. Ceiling lighting in bronze and gold is by George Kovacs; the impressive accessories were brought in by CDH.

BATH AND BEYOND

Facing vanities in the master bath again carry the espresso color theme and introduce a lavish, contemporary feel with their white countertops and polished-chrome hardware. Within the shower enclosure sits an alluring tub with black and white porcelain and metal finishes used all around. Here, again, a view of the mangroves looking north onto the golf course offers a welcome sight. The mirrors above the vanities are framed to match the cabinets. Glass panels lead to the walk-in shower, with its seamless shower environment. Relaxing in luxury is what the designers had in mind.

ROOM WITH A MESMERIZING VIEW

Dreamy mangrove vistas, with the Gulf in view, are sure to lull to sleep those who climb into bed in the sweeping master bedroom. The king-sized bed showcases a dark panel behind it in the same espresso color wood finish incorporated throughout the unit. Two wall-mounted lighting fixtures, called Hollywood in antique silver, by John Richards, flank the bed. The gray and white geometric-print area rug, in silk and wool, with natural textures and finishes, is linear with architectural details and provided by CDH. On either side of the bed are champagne-finish nightstands by Adriana Hoyes, while the antique-gold-finish bench at the foot of the bed is another John Richards original. ‘Magnificent’ most fittingly describes the master bedroom.

DREAMY STATE

Guests and family members will discover a restful utopia in this colorful second bedroom—one of three guest rooms—complete with a captivating landscape. A king-sized bed rests in front of a brick-colored wall clad in Roycroft Copper Red, by Sherwin Williams. In contrast, an upholstered headboard in a creamy chenille fabric by Lazar infuses softness into the room. Bright glass-front drawer nightstands are by Trica and silver-etched mirrors, framed in a hazel walnut finish, complete the wall. Drapery panels feature an abstract pattern in a brick red, slate blue, and mustard with matching pillows. Adding light at the side of the bed is a Mercury glass star-based lamp. With its cheery colors and outside beauty, all will feel right at home here.

MADE IN THE SHADE

Natural surroundings provide the perfect setting for the immense covered terrace. Large arm chairs, finished in an offwhite mushroom tone, have been cast in metal to look like mesh and are manufactured by Skyline feature. The center table, from Seasonal Living, comes with a frost textured finish over glazed ceramic. Two small metal-topped tables are the perfect complement to the accompanying ottomans with their light gray upholstery. Pillows are compliments of Elaine Smith and made with taupe-twisted rope. The flooring is a porcelain tile. One of several terraces, the space invites company for outdoor parties—or solitary daydreaming.

The Personality of Color

While color trends last year focused on the inspiration of nature, this year is all about individuality. The idea of self expression has always been at the forefront of interior design but people will be rediscovering the joy in creating a highly personalized space for themselves and their families this year. And remember, just because something isn’t “on trend” doesn’t mean it’s not the perfect thing for your home. These days, people are caring less and less about trends and more and more about what makes them happy and comfortable. The colors this year reflect that idea allowing people to choose from a range of tones that are both bold and classic while encouraging self expression and individuality.

Raspberry Blush, Benjamin Moore’s pick for 2023 color of the year is a cheery color with a vibrant red-orange, coral, and pink tones. This saturated shade energizes a room as people look for ways to personalize their space with color. Raspberry Blush the rest of Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends palette for 2023 offers beautiful statement colors that let you create your own individual space. For maximum effect, splash Raspberry Blush on walls, trim, and the ceiling to wrap a room in warmth. Or for a more subtle statement, use it as an accent on your kitchen island or paint the trim around builtin wall units. Soft shades of white and beige balance the bright, rosy hue.

While individual style is on trend, people are still turning to nature to find inspiration. In contrast to the bright colors other companies have chosen, the soft, earthy shade of pinky clay takes the lead at Dunn-Edwards. Terra Rosa blends brown and burgundy creating a rosy pink can be both a grounding neutral and a delicate accent. The color is sweet and cozy without being overdone and can be used inside and out.

Spanish Moss, a midnight green shade from Krylon with a strong connection to the richness of nature as it brings the tones of forests and mossy terrains into your home. Green is a renewing and balancing color and is quickly becoming a popular neutral tone. Krylon specializes in spray paints so this shade easily upgrades furniture and decor giving off the feeling of understated luxury. This color pairs well with gold, sandstone, and copper.

Canyon Ridge by Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. A nod to the landscapes of the Southwestern landscapes, Canyon Ridge by Better Homes & Gardens is an orange-meets-pink paint color that offers a trendy take on the classic terra-cotta. This color couples especially well with bright blue as it sits opposite to this tone on the color wheel. Canyon Ridge, infuses energy and comfort into any space and is available exclusively at Walmart.

REDEND POINT

Redend Point by Sherwin-Williams is on trend, earth toned shade subtle pink undertones. The color can act as a warm neutral for a whole room or be used as a subtle yet eye-catching focal point. This color works well with other tones from Sherwin-Williams like Urban Bronze and Cool Beige to create a natural and calming palette.

VINING IVY

Vining Ivy by Glidden blends blue and green for a tranquil backdrop and works well with both contemporary and classic styles. The tone is energizing yet calming and works in space. Its versatility takes the guesswork out of design. Pair the blue-green jewel tone with wood finishes, stone accents, and rich textures for a room that borrows from the outdoors. Or opt for smaller doses of Vining Ivy on trim, furniture, or cabinetry for a subtle dose of the soothing paint color.

RUSTIC

GREIGE GENTLE VIOLET

Dutch Boy offers up Rustic Greige this year. A cozy, goes-with-everything color, it blends gray and beige with subtle red undertones. Rustic Greige wraps a room in warmth, making it perfect for kitchens, bedrooms, and family spaces. Individuality looks a lot like taking care of your overall well-being as people are dedicating time and energy to designing personal spaces that make them feel cozy and calm. Rustic Greige fits the bill as it brings a sense of personal wellness into your home.

Behr’s Color of the Year is Blank Canvas.

As an off-white shade, Blank Canvas is a safe bet for those who want a true, neutral tone with a warm feeling. The barely off-white hue of this color is an invitation to embrace a fresh start. This tone straddles the line between past and future, and offers a meditation on the present and feels like a deep exhale of calm and creativity.

Valspar has selected 12 paint colors creating a collection that works together for the ultimate in individualization. The grouping includes soft neutrals, sweet pastels, and soothing shades of blue and green. In this collection three stand outs are Desert Carnation, a faded and natural terra-cotta tone, Gentle Violet, a softened violet that embodies harmony and connectivity, and Rising Tide, a light blue with a dose of softness, used as a fresh neutral with uplifting qualities of a modern pastel.

BLANK CANVAS

Finally, the leader in color, Pantone has selected Viva Magenta as their Color of the Year. Inspired by the red of the cochineal, a cactus-eating insect native to tropical and subtropical America, this tone vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration.

A Transitional Transformation

Working on this project at Fiddler’s Creek felt a lot like déjà vu for Interior Designer Elizabeth Manchego of Diana Hall Design. Walking into the three-bedroom plus office, three-and-a-half bath residence was something of a homecoming. 15 years before, Manchego, then as Assistant Designer for another firm, had helped apply faux finishes and design every room in the house.

“Everything then was Tuscan, very ornate, and overly ‘done’”, recalls Manchego. Dark wood, heavy plaster and lavishly finished ceilings was the style then, but it was the exact opposite of what they couple who bought the house now wanted.”

Interestingly enough, this full circle moment happened by chance. The couple knew nothing about Manchego having worked on the home before.

“They sort of pulled my name out of a hat,” she laughingly relates.

“But when I walked into their home, I remembered everything about it.”

Manchego held extensive interviews with the couple, retirees from Tennessee, who wanted to use the property as their second home, to establish their budget and tastes. Then she assembled a two-day presentation about her vision for the home, incorporating all their notes and adding her creative flair.

“The wife wanted a neutral, elegant palette and the husband wanted color in every room, but those wishes were easily accommodated. The fact that the home

Foyer: Every inch of this entry foyer had been faux finished in the home’s previous incarnation, including the ubiquitous columns. Manchego began again, painting everything, including the ceiling, a clean white to set a lighter tone. The back wall is clad in Schumacher’s grass cloth wallpaper with a Greek key inside a hexagon to add a classical note. The Woodbridge console has brushed nickel pulls and above it, the mirror’s texturized resin frame is silvered. The Visual Comfort lantern chandelier continues the metallic theme with its polished nickel cage. The hand-knotted rug with its abstract diamond pattern is from Hadingers Flooring.

was filled with classic columns, harkening back to that previous Tuscan design, was the true challenge.”

It wasn’t that the columns were structural, the problem was that the floors had been built right up to and around the columns and to remove them would have meant extensive reflooring, an outcome the owners wanted to avoid for both time and expense. So, Manchego had to think strategically.

“We added wainscoting in some rooms to blend into the columns making the design more classic and then painted all of them white to take the emphasis off of them. It was important to the owners that the home’s design made everything appear lighter, brighter, and more transitional.

Manchego was successful. The owners loved everything about the redesign, finding it livable, comfortable, and elegant; all, as they said, they could ever hope for.

For her part, Manchego appreciated the couple’s exquisite taste and cooperative attitude and enjoyed working, again, on this lovely residence.

She sums up the project perfectly, “It was a most wonderful transformation.”

Living Room: As the first room visitors see in the home, it was important to the owners that the living room’s design be elegant and impressive. Manchego began with the coffered ceiling, which was washed oak once finished in tones of dark red and deep brown. By painting it white, it made the ceiling look even taller, an illusion aided by hanging floor-to-ceiling draperies in a light gray. The Vanguard sofa sports off-white performance fabric and is served by matching end tables from CTH Sherill. Twin swivel barrel back club chairs by Rowe, the bisquit-tufted ottomans with nail head trim, and the beige architectural armchair from Vanguard add extra seating. Cushions from Kravet Couture, reflect the colors of the rug from International Design Source (IDS.) The entertainment center, “So pretty it almost made me cry,” says Manchego, is from Old Biscayne Designs and has textured two-tone doors and a dark gray lacquer cabinet. Above the Fremarc Designs coffee table, the 40-inch Crystorama globe chandelier in an old silver finish brightly lights the scene. The abstract paintings introduce the husband’s requested pops of color.

Formal Dining Room: A cleverly designed, custom built-in with three drawers acts as serving buffet. “I didn’t want it to take up too much space as the dining room isn’t very deep so this saves space while still offering a pace for storage and to serve from,” says Manchego. Double scones from Kelly Wearstler for Visual Comfort light the Capiz texture of the niche’s wall covering and painting from a gallery on Naples’ Fifth Avenue. A designer-led shopping trip to Gattles Fine Linens in Naples supplied all the glassware, chargers, and even napkin rings atop the Vanguard pedestal table. A sculpture by John-Richard, a gold twig inside a silver ring set on a marble block, serves as centerpiece. Seating for six is provided by the Michael Weiss for Fairfield high-backed chairs covered in gray/sliver fabric banded in leather. Wainscoting continued from the hall tie into the room’s columns. A trio of glass bowls on the wall were hand-blown for the room and are lit by the crystal and nickel San Marco chandelier bar from Restoration Hardware.

Kitchen: Manchego had the glazed finish removed, the cabinetry painted soft white, and the hardware changed to polished metal in this gorgeous kitchen. The original island featured two different counter heights, a now dated look that needed to change. The designer chose Taj Mahal quartzite to top the now level island, because of its gold veining that matched marble floor. She highlighted the whole scene by use of pendants from Visual Comfort. Fairfield stools have been upholstered in a light gray herringbone pattern with nail head trim. All Wolf appliances are new, and the custom range hood was designed by Manchego herself. But the room’s true showstopper is the dazzling backsplash, a mixture of marble and Capiz stone from UMI Stone.

Connoisseurs of wine, the couple entertains often with wine tastings a favorite event. The brushed silver metal wine rack consists of pegs that can be added to as more vintages need display. 28 bottles are held at present, with more in a built-in wine refrigerator. This clad opening with wood trim once had iron gates, but now allows easier access to the dining room for festive dinners.

Wine room: The designer left the original countertop in place in this wine room but painted the cabinetry a mushroom gray. She then added texture with a cork-like wall covering by Phillip Jefferies. Two hanging lanterns from Progressive Lighting feature clear, seeded glass and brushed nickel. An intriguing shadow box of miniature pods is by Palacek and the tusk near the serving sink is by Global Views. The arched opening, one of two in the room, offers access to the living room.

Family Room (top left): The renovation was done in two phases and, in the second, the couple opted to create a comfortable family room for relaxing and watching TV in a less formal space. A grouping of windows with Roman shades flank a funky threedimensional entertainment center by Bernhardt in ceruse greige. The Hancock & Moore sofa holds three power recliners and the twin birch leather chairs facing the television are also recliners. The identical Taylor King swivel rockers sport a diamond pattern and the designer assures they are “very, very comfortable.” A shell stone drum table from Wilson Lighting hosts a mixture of elements continued in the Vanguard cocktail table, with its shaded slate cabinet, marble accented top, and partial glass trundle, which recesses when the recliners are extended. Cushions are by Lexington, the Bokara Oriental Rug is from IDS and the two-toned grid-patterned draperies are by Kravt Couture. A local artist Alejandra Ponce painted the sea turtles on commission to introduce color to the room. Even the ceiling got a makeover with grass cloth by Thibaut grass cloth between the beams.

Guest Room (bottom left): A double linen drum shade by Wilson Lighting softly illuminates this charming guest room. The metal bed by Wesley Allen features an upholstered head and footboard. The tufted Pine Cone Hill bedspread is topped by chenille pillows in Schumacher fabric and pillows with a sea fan fabric by Stroheim. The Villa & House white lacquered raffia nightstands hold ombre glass lamps by Jamie Young. Three Elk Home boxes contain glittering geodes and are set atop light blue wood grained wallpaper by Thibaut. The textured giclee is from Artists Guild of America.

Master Bedroom: A duo of whimsical antique silver chandeliers, from the Ellis Collection by Capital Lighting soar overhead in the spacious master bedroom. Floor-to-ceiling draperies by JF Fabrics accentuate the ceiling height, now painted a natural tan to add intimacy to the space. A Vanguard Cleo bed has a tufted linen headboard and a Taylor King chenille upholstered bench at its foot. The coverlet is by Restoration Hardware. The throw and other cushions are by Lili Allessandra. The bed pillows were custom-made. The silver twig wall sculpture by Uttermost echoes the frame of the twin nightstands by John-Richard which have reeded front doors and ring pulls. Glass lamps by FlowDécor provides soft light for nighttime reading. The seating area features two linen covered chairs and a table from Vanguard, with a pierced metallic lamp by FlowDécor. The round ottoman by Vanguard, in an alligator print, has one button and plenty of space for the owners to put their feet up at the end of a busy day.

A Fun Take on Coastal Living

Beautiful without being too feminine, colorful while still neutral, and family-friendly without compromising design — that was the directive set forth by the homeowners of this new construction home in the Isles of Collier Preserve.

With those wishes in mind, Lisa M. Guild and Amanda Bugar of LMG Design Consulting set about creating a home that embraced the laid-back lifestyle Naples has to offer while never compromising on the design of the home or the clients’ tastes and needs. In fact, the home went on to win a Sand Dollar award for best home over $1.5 million. “These clients were wonderful to work with and I loved the vision they had for their Naples home,” says Guild. “They moved into the Isles of Collier Preserve for the amenities and lifestyle, and wanted to make a home that worked for their family which includes two sons who frequently have friends come into town or who visit from a nearby college. Fabrics needed to be durable, the furniture comfortable, so that the home is conducive to relaxed entertaining and multigenerational family time.”

Ready, Set, Go

Guild and Bugar started by adding architectural items to the home and establishing a color palette of taupe-inspired neutrals and pops of coral, rose gold, and turquoise. Black was used as an accent in artwork and some well-placed accessories. In the entry, the marble top console sports an architecturally interesting stainless steel base that feels like metal branches have been woven together to create the modern table. On the wall, a giclée by John-Richard sets the stage for the rest of the home by introducing the coral pink and hints at the fun yet sophisticated design beyond.

Sparkle and Shine

The focal point of the living room is the handmade mica wallpaper made by O Mexico. The paper shimmers in all lights and is the perfect complement to the darker accents on the media stand with pinwheel doors and the metal and wood in the flanking bookshelves and cerused oak coffee table. Known for their love of beautiful wall coverings in their designs, Guild says, “We use wallpaper in a strategic way and only when it adds to the narrative of a coastal home. It infuses visual interest without adding a lot of color, so the backdrop of the home remained neutral.” Coral and turquoise are introduced through the painting while the space is anchored by a custom silk and wool area rug with the same tonality as the kitchen and dining room connecting the mica and abalone chandelier. The large sectional seats eight and is flanked by two chairs with chrome bodies and easy to clean fabrics. The huge fan helps move air through the room when the wall of sliding doors is open creating seamless indoor/outdoor living.

Kitchen Combo

The rich, taupe island helps to connect the kitchen to the rest of the open concept home. The solid surface counter is light while adding subtle veining. The barstools are elegant and functional, covered in a shimmery gold high-performance fabric for easy cleanup. Above the island, two pendants by Hudson Valley Lighting offer a new perspective on an iconic lantern shape through the use of classic linen shades and surrounded by a metal trapezoid. In the dining room beyond, Guild and Bugar added a statement piece with an abalone shell chandelier. The art brings in turquoise for a flash of color. “This shade of blue can be a really wonderful accent color but it can also feel cutesy if not used correctly. Adding a small amount through modern art was one way we brought in this Gulf-inspired color without it feeling juvenile,” says Guild. Around the table, the lead chairs pull their color and pattern from the chandelier finishing the room with a polished touch.

New Perspective

The wallpaper used in the master bedroom is actually paper that’s folded to create waves of texture that match the color on the surrounding walls. The bed, with a washable silk coverlet, is flanked by blue-grey nightstands from Vanguard featuring mirrored trim detail. Stools at the end of the bed showcase the same finish as the nightstands and the branch-like bases add a natural touch to the elegant space. Wingback chairs provide seating and the fabric offers a change of perspective on the wallpaper pattern.

Oyster Pearl

For Guild, taking inspiration from the Gulf Coast setting offered a unique perspective. “We love the idea of creating spaces that almost feel like you are inside a shell. The colors of the home and the shine in the metals used throughout creates a sophisticated take on coastal living.” In the powder bath, the mirror is the element that brings the coast to the home. The beautiful oval shape is surrounded by a fantastic frame that makes you think of coral and shells. The lacy texture is tipped with silver leafing. Rosy wallpaper with tons of organic movement creates a stunning backdrop for this elegant bath.

“This is the husband’s space, so we needed to create a room that matched the design of the rest of the home while still being a functional, and much-used home office,” explains Guild. While the furniture is modern and fashion-forward, there is plenty of storage available. Grey Phillip Jeffries wallpaper with nailhead details is accented by the bright colors in the art above the walnut-colored storage cabinets with chrome details. Mango wood lamps add a natural element and are in keeping with the theme of black accents. The room is anchored by an area rug with an abstract pattern that reminds Guild and Bugar of seafoam sprayed on the shore.

MAKING THOSE RESOLUTIONS STICK

The New Year means new resolutions.

To eat better, get fit, organize our lives, learn new skills, read more, be online less…the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, by the second week in January about 30% of people will have given up and, by June, over 50% will have abandoned their enthusiastically made resolutions. That doesn’t have to be you this year. Here are a few easy steps that will keep you on track and help you make your resolutions into healthy habits that will follow you for the rest of your life.

1. Be Realistic

The best way to set yourself up for failure is to be too aggressive with what you want to accomplish. You can’t go from never reading to reading a book per week and expect to be able to keep up that pace for any meaningful amount of time. It’s the same with working out or eating healthy. Resolving to cut out your favorite food all together is setting you up to fail or expecting to suddenly work out six days a week just isn’t realistic. Small changes add up to big progress over time.

2. Know Your Why

Don’t feel in a rush to make a resolution. Really think about what you want to change about your life and why. You might find you’re making changes because of outside expectations. Don’t just fall into a resolution, plan it out so you know your “why”. This will help you keep going when life gets busy or when the change is hard.

3. Make a Plan

Come up with a clear path to achieving your goals. If you want to be more organized around your home for example, make a cleaning and organizing chart that has specific tasks for each day of the week. Not having a plan drastically increases your chances of failure.

4. Include Others

Tell people you know will support you and your resolution. Get them involved so they can help you and so they don’t become a source of temptation by putting you in situations where you have a hard time staying on track. 5. Keep Track

One of the biggest ways people get derailed is by not tracking their progress, especially when it comes to weight loss or exercise. Taking progress photos on a regular schedule will show you how far you’ve come when you just can’t see it in the mirror. Recording personal records in the gym as you increase your weights, speed, and distance will help you see how far you’ve come when you’re discouraged.

6. Don’t Obsess

Don’t let your resolution become a source of anxiety or stress in your life. Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. It took you years to create the issue you’re trying to fix and a slip up now and then isn’t going to derail your progress. Obsessing over your goals only makes it more likely that you will quit before you see significant progress.

Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce

MAKES: 4 Servings

STEAK

1 ½ pounds flank steak

MARINADE

¼ cup oil

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon salt juice of 1 lime

CHIMICHURRI SAUCE

½ cup cilantro

½ cup parsley

½ onion - diced

1 teaspoon salt - or to taste

¼ teaspoon pepper - or to taste

1 tablespoon garlic

½ teaspoon Italian blend seasoning

½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

⅓ cup oil

2 tablespoons red wine vinegaror apple cider vinegar

Whisk together marinade ingredients. Combine marinade and steak in a large ziplock bag. Seal and chill for 30 minutes, or up to overnight.

Combine all chimichurri ingredients in a blender or food processor, and pulse until smooth.

Preheat an oiled skillet or grill to medium-high heat. Sear steak for 6-8 minutes on each side until heavily browned on the outside and slightly pink in the middle.

Thinly slice steak across the grain and serve with chimichurri sauce on top.

Green Shakshuka

MAKES: 5 Servings

2 tbsp olive oil

½ medium onion, diced

4 garlic cloves, finely chopped

9 ounces brussels sprouts, shaved or finely sliced

1 zucchini, grated

1 tsp cumin

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp pepper

2 cups packed baby spinach

5 large eggs

¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped

1 large avocado, for garnish

Heat olive oil in a saute pan on medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Add the shaved brussels sprouts and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently. When the brussels sprouts have softened, add the zucchini and spices and stir for another minute.

Add the baby spinach and stir until it just starts to wilt, then turn the heat to low.

Flatten the mixture with a spatula and create 5 small wells, then crack the eggs into each well. Cook until the eggs are done to your liking. You can also add a lid to steam and cook the eggs faster.

Sprinkle the fresh cilantro on top and garnish with sliced avocado.

Sauteed Broccoli Rabe

MAKES: 4 Servings

¼ cup (60ml) extra-virgin olive oil

4 medium cloves garlic, thinly sliced

Large pinch red pepper flakes

3 tablespoons pine nuts

1 pound (450g) broccoli rabe, ends trimmed

Kosher salt

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat olive oil with garlic over medium heat until garlic just begins to turn golden, about 2 minutes. Add red pepper flakes and toast for about 30 seconds. Remove from heat.

Add broccoli rabe to boiling water and cook until thickest parts of stalks are tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain well. Add rabe to skillet, toss well, and return to medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally and lowering heat as necessary to prevent scorching, until the rabe is very tender, about 10 minutes. Add pine nuts and season with salt.

Turn heat to low and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes. Serve hot.

Grilled Zucchini

MAKES: 4 Servings

2 cloves of garlic minced Juice of 1 lemo

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

4 medium zucchinis cut into ½-inch-thick slices

2 tablespoons feta cheese crumbled

2 tablespoons pine nuts

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Olive oil spray

To a gallon freezer bag, or medium bowl, combine the garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Add the zucchini slices to the marinade, and let sit while you preheat the grill.

Heat the grill to medium high heat, and spray with olive oil.

Add zucchini in a single layer and grill until charred on both sides, about 2 minutes each side.

Move to a large plate, sprinkle with feta, pine nuts, and parsley. And serve hot.

Thai Shrimp Curry

MAKES: 4-6 Servings

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced

⅓ cup thinly sliced scallions, white and green parts, from 4-5 scallions

2 cloves garlic, minced

2½ tablespoons Thai green curry paste

1 (14-ounce) can coconut milk

¼ cup water

2 tablespoons fish sauce

1 tablespoon dark or light brown sugar

2 pounds large, extra large (26-30 per lb) or jumbo (21-25 per lb) shrimp, peeled and deveined (see note), thawed if frozen Juice of 1 lime (about 2 tablespoons), plus more lime wedges for serving

¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro, Thai basil, or Italian basil (or a combination)

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring frequently, until soft, about 3 minutes. If the onions start to brown, reduce the heat to medium. Add the scallions, garlic, and green curry paste, and cook, stirring frequently, for 2 minutes more. Add the coconut milk, water, fish sauce, and sugar and bring to a gentle boil. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring frequently, until the shrimp are pink and just cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the lime juice and sprinkle with the cilantro (or basil). Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary, and serve with jasmine rice.

Spinach Frittata

MAKES: 4 Servings

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

¾ cup thinly sliced shallots, from 2 to 3 shallots

5 oz. baby spinach (about 5 packed cups)

½ teaspoon salt

8 large eggs

⅓ cup heavy cream

¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

¾ cup shredded Cheddar cheese

½ cup Parmigiano Reggiano ¼ cup fresh chopped basil

Preheat the oven to 325°F, and set an oven rack in the middle position.

Heat the oil in a 10-inch cast iron or ovenproof nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the shallots and cook, stirring frequently, until softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Do not brown. Add half of the spinach and cook until wilted down, about 1 minute. Add the remaining spinach and ¼ teaspoon of the salt and continue cooking until all of the spinach is wilted, 1 to 2 minutes more.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, pepper, and the remaining ¼ teaspoon of salt.

Add the cooked spinach mixture, Cheddar, Parmigiano Reggiano, and basil to the egg mixture and stir to combine.

Pour the mixture back into the pan (no need to wash it), then place it in the oven and bake until set, 20 to 23 minutes. Immediately place an oven mitt over the pan handle to remind yourself that it is hot (it’s easy to forget and burn your hand, and the handle stays hot for a long time). Serve the frittata directly from the pan, or use a rubber spatula to loosen the edges and slide the frittata onto a serving platter.

Freezer-Friendly Instructions: The cooked frittata can be frozen for up to 3 months. Remove the frittata from the freezer about 24 hours prior to serving and reheat it in the microwave or, covered with foil, in a 300°F oven until hot in the center.
