Heartfelt Design

Setting the Stage

The home is 12,505 square feet with five-bedrooms and six-and-a half baths. The three-story home features a bottom level housing the garage and providing flood protection as per building codes. The clients wanted an impressive entrance and Krümm, underscoring her belief in holistic design, knew this space had to be as special as the rest of the home. She envisioned a two-story textured feature wall with sculptured Duchateau wood tiles and lit the wall with LED architectural lighting, custom Varaluz pendants, and a Capiz shell chandelier by Cocoon Gallery. The glass-encased stairwell can be sealed off entirely, for both security and storm protection, and the elevator rises behind the upstairs bar, where a two-way mirror surprisingly unveils direct views of the Gulf of Mexico. Her client wanted a special element to greet guests upon entering the main living space. Kira and her team engaged artisans to create a unique metal art inlay in the entryway floor symbolizing and memorializing the Pentium Processor he designed.

Kira Krümm has been described as a designer with a heart and she and her team bore that out in a recent project for a couple’s new primary home on Gulf Shore Boulevard in Naples.

“I was fortunate to have worked with them before on their seasonal condominium in Tiburon, but this project was different. They were preparing to move their primary residence in Chicago, where they had raised their family, and although excited about the permanent move to Florida, relocating is a major life change. I knew this transition was bittersweet and I wanted to help them create their forever home and make it as welcoming and warm as could be,” she says.

Krümm, founder and Principal Interior Designer of Koastal Design Group, is known (over her three-decade career,) for creating subtle, shimmering, and oh-so-elegant homes for her

clients. Much of her work is ethereal, reminiscent of the sea and cloudless skies, as though one were surrounded by the pearlescence of a shell’s interior. While her signature palette is soothing and lovely, Kira also integrated the vision of her clients incorporating warm vivid colors for a perfect balance of calm and dynamic.

“We made use of the golden tones of European white oak in the floors and ceilings—to emphasize warmth and introduce earth elements,” explains Krümm. She also incorporated textures and elements reminiscent of the sea to communicate the cool calmness of coastal beauty.

Kira worked with her clients and looked for components that reflect their own unique taste.

“My clients’ lifestyle and aesthetic desires always drive the design direction,” says Krümm, “As a residential designer, it isn’t about creating a showroom, but rather creating a home that is livable and feels good. It was an honor to be chosen to help them create the place where they would spend the rest of their lives and make new memories.”

Open Spaces

Polished nickel shoots through the cut grooves of the great room’s oak feature wall, like lightning through a summer sky. The Phillip Jeffries ombré wall covering on the flanking walls is the color of the Gulf when the storm has passed. Seashell art by Trowbridge underscores the room’s water imagery. Sand-colored performance fabric covers the twin sofas and azure wingback chairs which are drawn up to the custom coffee table by Old Biscayne Designs, set before the linear electric fireplace fronted by Cristallo quartzite. In the dining area, a Varaluz Kabebe shell chandelier from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery shines down upon the dramatic custom table by Cocoon Gallery, created from an entire tree root system naturally unearthed in Indonesia. Dining chairs by Palecek offer seating for eight.

Lighted cabinetry by Ruffino and cut-glass pendants from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery reflect off the iridescent subway tile in this elegant L-shaped kitchen. The custom hood’s cladding is replicated in the knee wall, atop which is a thick slab of Cristallo Prime quartzite, providing both a sturdy surface for the chef and a lovely counter for visitors seated on the Palecek bar stools. In keeping with the latest kitchen trends, many of the appliances are concealed behind cabinetry. The shiplap used in the ceiling adds to the coastal references.

Entertaining Area

Ruffino Cabinetry built the stunning bar, composed of custom Golden Oak cabinetry, with nickel and glass shelving, complemented by a Melbourne white quartzite countertop, and a built-in wine cooler. But the true showstopper is the two-way mirror at the bar’s back which allows those riding in the elevator to stop at this level and look out onto a stunning view of the Gulf of Mexico.

Working Well

Holding pride of place in the center of the home is the glass-enclosed study. Though retired, the man of the house continued consulting and wanted a bespoke place to conduct business without feeling as though he were cut-off from the family activities just outside this sanctuary. Exquisite millwork by BCB Homes framing the French doors and adjoining the ceiling is stained a deep Golden Oak tone, which echoes the elegant builtins and shelves by Ruffino Cabinetry. The walls are clad in a pebble gray wall covering by Phillip Jeffries and the dramatic ceiling tray sports a soft fern green stone luster paint by Koastal Paint and Wall Décor. A Luiza quartzite countertop and comfortable chairs by Palacek allow for even more workspace in this highly functional room. The rich flooring includes a thin metal inlay, which outlines the chevron wood detail.

Simple Elegance

The stunning primary bath is a testament to simplicity. The feature wall behind the soaking tub is made up of starburst tile for a subtle dramatic effect. Ruffino Cabinetry is pumiced, washed, and brushed with driftwood glaze to evoke a warm glow standing in contrast to the serene sophistication of the subtle metallic tilework reflected throughout the room. In the center of the built-in stands an interactive mirror by Electric Mirror, backlit by the touch of a button. The snowy white quartzite countertop holds a trough sink with nickel faucets by Brizo and offers a space for a vanity serviced by an Old Biscayne Designs stool. The steam shower and floor beyond are made up of large format tiles to minimize grout lines, with smaller herringbone laid tile underneath the tub for visual impact and safety. Above is yet another one-of-a-kind ceiling, banded in warm wood with inlay furnished by Koastal Paint and Wall Décor’s signature custom Lusterstone finish. Suspended from it is a spectacular Kichler Lighting firework chandelier.

Masterfully Designed

“Rejecting the standard white vaulted ceilings found in many current residences, the clients were very interested in having unique ceilings in each of the rooms in their new home,” says Krümm, who took the challenge to heart when she designed such masterpieces, like this oak clad ceiling. Aqua accents mimic the water visible from the adjacent patio in the primary bedroom. The custom bed, with a headboard of horizontal upholstered panels set high on the wall, was assembled on-site. The bedding ensemble is by Ann Gish. Palecek table lamps sit atop nightstands which complement the Dune dresser by Vanguard, sourced from International Design Source (IDS). Louvered shutters, referencing many historic coastal properties, are built into the window frames, and may be closed on the bottom and open on the top, allowing for privacy as well as nuanced regulation of light in the room. The custom-made abstract area rug from Carpet Designs laid on the European white oak floor, conjures the hues of the Guff outside and further reference is provided by the fossil shell art by Trowbridge.

Playful Choices

Planning ahead for eventual grandchildren, the owners chose kid friendly furnishings and colors intended for their future family expansion. By the end of the project, the couple’s two grandchildren had made an appearance and the room was ready to welcome them. Twin beds by Blend Home Furnishings have custom faux-leather and Ultrasuede headboards and are outfitted with washable (bleachable) white bedding with marine blue accent pillows by D.V. KAP. The bubble patterned Jaunty rug, in shades of blue, easily disguises stains. Wall art from Leftbank evokes skipping stones in a pond and the Old Biscayne Designs nightstands and dresser are a fun play on puzzle pieces. A corner chair is the perfect place to read a bedtime story and Ambler Art Group +WJC Design provided the whimsical lifelike sculptures of stingrays scooting up the nearby wall. The bath cabinetry glimpsed through the open door has a white Pompeii quartz countertop with a toe kick and pull-out step to help little people reach the sink to wash sandy hands.

Outdoor Living

With a complete outdoor kitchen underneath a split-stone wall (that, for symmetry, matches the home’s exterior), this huge outdoor living area was designed for entertaining. Beneath cypress beams of the vaulted hip roof supporting tongue-in-groove planks painted in Sherwin Williams’ Rainwashed, a robin’s egg blue which is traditionally believed to discourage birds from nesting. Two gray teak tables from Essentials For Living may be combined to host larger gatherings. The tables themselves are bistro height so those seated at them have a clear view over the railing to the Gulf beyond. A seating group of synthetic woven seagrass with Sunbrella cushions and a stone coffee table are pulled up to the linear fireplace wall, topped, as is the outdoor kitchen counter, in Taj Mahal quartzite which was purposely built low per request so as not to block the view of the Gulf and poolside.

Impactful Interior

Striking gold cabinetry hangs above the built-in bar with its wine refrigerator (an ‘80’s version had to be replaced.) The same striking tile as in the powder bath, here set in a herringbone pattern, acts as backsplash and the wooden cabinetry below, topped with snowy quartz, has a bronze and gold overlay. The other cabinetry to note in this room is the floating credenza, with Asian-inspired hardware, under the television. A small Interlude shagreen chest is glimpsed through the arched doorway leading to the powder and laundry rooms. A custom porthole mirror ensures beautiful light is reflected down the hallway.

Old friends are gold, the saying goes, and that was certainly true when Diana Hall, owner of Diana Hall Design got the call from Naples Kitchen and Bath (NKB). They had new clients who needed their villa in Naples’ Venetian Village renovated and NKB knew just who to call for help. Hall and her associate, Elizabeth Manchego, jumped right in.

“We’ve worked together with NKB on many projects over the years,” says Hall, “and they do such a great job that it is always a pleasure to collaborate with them.”

The villa, a 3,500 square foot, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath home, is set on stilts overlooking the peaceful waters of Venetian Bay. The setting is lovely and the owners were looking to upgrade their home to better fit its surroundings.

“The wife is very artistic in her own right, having design experience herself,” explains Hall. “She has exquisite taste and is very familiar with high-end manufacturers, making all the furniture selection much easier.”

Incorporating some long-cherished pieces of the owners’, like a Hermes tray and a Japanese fish print, helped set the color scheme for the home, adding pops of color to a sophisticated palette of neutrals and metallics. Hall says, “One of the homeowners is a beautiful ‘Autumn’, a redhead with honeyed skin and she was drawn to those colors.”

Furnishings were chosen to host guests when the couple entertains, but to also be comfortable enough for them to kick off their shoes and put their feet up when the party’s over.

This double-duty notion informed all of Hall’s design choices and she was ever-aware of the fact that the space was small enough to warrant some clever choices to make sure everything fit.

“The kitchen was a particular challenge,” she says. “We opened it up by taking out a wall, but that revealed that a neighbor’s plumbing had intruded on our space. The cabinetry had to be reconfigured, but it all came right in the end. We even won a Sand Dollar Award for ‘Best Kitchen Design.’”

Hall looks back on the project with a wide smile on her face. “It was an absolute joy to work on this home and I love how it all turned out that I’d be happy to move right in myself.”

Great Conversations

Matching sofas face each other to encourage conversation (and the throw pillows are all easily removable for lying down to watch some TV.) Chenille swivel chairs were requested by the man of the house and the clever, custom ottoman which doubles as a coffee table was Hall and Manchego’s design. The wooden top, which hosts the owner’s beloved Hermes tray, moves freely back and forth so, no matter where someone is sitting in the room, they have a handy surface to use. Underneath it is a hand-knotted camouflage-patterned area rug from International Design Source (IDS). A Baker lamp with branch-like design illuminates the scene without taking up much room. The glass-topped corner table has two levels, the bottom to hold magazines or the latest novel and the top for a favorite cocktail. Overhead, a chandelier of bronze wands tipped with bulbs from Visual Comfort hovers close to the ceiling to draw the eye upward. The draperies, by Window Wear, are strategically made from polyester. “Other fabrics shrink over time and have to be hemmed again,” Hall shares. The dining table and chairs, with seating for six is from Henredon and a Baker chandelier casts soft light on one of the owner’s abstract paintings which again injects a bright orange shot of color.

Cleverly Done

Much space is saved in the galley kitchen which started out as a dark, cramped box. The waterfall counter of Taj Mahal quartzite (which benefits from its translucency when sunbeams illuminate it) has no backing so that the Interlude Lucite stools may either be set opposite each other, for game night, or tucked away underneath, freeing up space on the Legno Bastone wide-plank oak floor. Naples Kitchen & Bath ivory cabinetry sports a gallery shelf on the very top, spotlighting locally sourced coral as a nod to the nearby beach. Two cabinet drawers on the lower right are refrigerated beverage holders. Metallic cabinetry hardware complements the dramatic gold range hood, a focal point of the room.

Functional Beauty

Show stopping marble tiles, inlaid with brass, are set on the entirety of the room’s largest wall. It is home to twin frosted sconces from Restoration Hardware which flank a mirror by Aldecor Custom Framing & Gallery. Making dramatic use of the arch, a leftover from before the renovation, Hall lined it in Phillip Jeffries grasscloth and made a place for the headboard of the Ackerly bed by Fairfield Chair Company, which has been upholstered in linen performance fabric and banded in stained wood. Custom pillows and a quilted bronze silk coverlet from Restoration Hardware glow softly from the lights inset in the arch. Interlude nightstands are made of lacquered grasscloth and hold lamps of back-painted Lucite by John Richard. The hand-knotted rug from IDS combines the grays, silvers, and golds adorning this sophisticated room.

Tranquil Spaces

A true collaboration of building and design, the primary bath was expanded to fit an oversize soaking tub (the owners are bath aficionados) set against a breathtaking wall of laser-cut Carrera marble in a floral pattern. Ivory cabinetry with gold handles is topped with durable quartz and holds a trough sink with metallic fixtures. A custom mirror, running the length of the wall, reflects light and highlights the texture of the grasscloth wall on which hangs a cloudscape abstract from Benson-Cobb Studios. The floor sports 30x30 tiles to reduce the number of grout lines, presenting a virtually unbroken creamy vista.

Stay a While

The owner fell in love with the teal coverlets (shown at the end of the queen beds) and that love affair set the color cues for this whole guest room. Color block drapes are set flush to the ceiling to accentuate its height. Louvered shutters allow for adjustment to the room’s light without having to resort to blackout shades. Custom throw pillows set on the organic cotton bedding, add varied shades of the same teal as the coverlets. Hall applied horizontal molding on the wall to elongate the room. A button tufted headboard on the Bernhardt bed offers no sharp contrast to the soothing wall color. The nightstand, by Villa & House, is topped with a lamp from Currey & Company adorned with shell roses. A low armchair, with biscuit-tufted upholstery and visible legs, draws attention to the wide oak-plank flooring. A faux fur rug adds a bit of whimsy.

End the Day

The cozy loft, found up three steps from the home’s bedroom level, is used not only for enjoying a favorite movie in the evening, but also as an office. The cabinetry under the television conceals file drawers. The focal point of the room is the Japanese fish print, made by using a real fish as an ink block, which sets the color tone for the room. The orange is reflected in the painted tray ceiling and in several of the throw pillows on the performance fabric-clad sectional. Twin Hair on Hide ottomans show off a bit of their wild sides with little manes projecting from the seams. As the Bermuda-style home is viewed from the new custom-poured shell driveway one would never guess at the extensive redesign and artfully executed renovation which took place. The orientation of the home was changed from the narrow side street to face Gulf Shore Boulevard, a second two-story wing was added on the right, and the triple-arches were changed to reveal a new grand entryway. “It took a lot of structural re-engineering, but I’m glad we were able to add the arches because they look spectacular as you approach the house,” notes builder Jay Bowerman.

A new beginning for an Olde Naples Estate

As you approach this elegant Bermuda-style home, you would never guess that it was once hidden behind a jungle of trees and subtropical shrubbery, obscuring its potential to be a modern family home in one of Naples’ best locations. Looking at it today, it’s also impossible to tell that it has undergone four renovations in its past life because this, the fifth and last renovation, was done with such vision, skill, and care. This beautiful home has at last been transformed into the modern Olde Naples estate it was meant to be.

“I was always drawn to the home and I felt it was too important to be torn down,” says developer Kristen Williams of KW Properties. “Living in this area, I knew it was one of the first grand homes built on Gulf Shore Boulevard.

I could tell it had great bones, we just needed to revive it, and create a home that fit the needs of the new Naples resident.”

Williams enlisted the talents of architect Alberto Abad of New Architectura and builders Jay Bowerman and Jaider Gonzalez of Big Island Builders. The team set to work designing an additional wing and new entry worthy of the home. “We felt it was important to change the orientation of the entrance to create more curb appeal and to give the home a true Gulf Shore Boulevard address. Also, the original two-story wing made the home feel off balanced,” comments Abad.

Bringing a design perspective driven by couture runways and a love of vibrant palettes, Williams and designer Lillian August were able to create a home that plays to fashion while still maintaining the traditional feel Northern transplants are so accustomed to. While inspired

by the Floridian sky, August was also charmed by Williams, and her handson approach to the project. “I found working with Kristen to be magical, and collaborating with a woman developer was empowering. It gave me the ability to play to fashion and celebrate the power of style through the design of the home.”

One of the main challenges Williams and August faced was the physical distance between them. While Williams and August were able to travel to one another at times, someone at the local level was needed to facilitate the vision. That task fell to Suzanne Costa of Suzanne Costa Interiors who says, “As a New York designer I was very familiar with Lillian August and working with such an icon was an honor. I feel we were able to take her distinct and colorful style and successfully translate it for Naples’ coastal market.”

Throughout the home, August’s unique ability to layer color, retro styles, and whimsical elements creates an interior that speaks to the history of the home and its setting, while looking towards the bright future it’s sure to have.

“This home was about surprise elements for me—from the way a hallway would open into an intimate sitting room, to accent items found throughout, I wanted people to be excited about each new space—,” says August. An expertly curated mix of traditional formality and a relaxed lifestyle is apparent. The sleek silhouette of twin Maison sofas pairs with the gold finish of the coffee and side tables offering an 80s vibe. The art in this room is from August’s Wendover collection, inspired by her love of Florida’s always beautiful sky. The large antique mirror was retrofitted for the home and plays off the arched windows it reflects.

The French country kitchen is consistently one of the favorite rooms in the home. Designed by Carol Ruffino and manufactured by Ruffino Cabinetry, the Alabaster White-finished cabinets provide the perfect canvas on which to build. Wire-grill door inserts with limed oak T&G backs, and shelves with custom iron brackets complement the beautiful limed oak island. Ruffino’s design incorporated a Lacanche Chassagne Classic Art Culinaire French range. Williams used the French pastry table at the end of the island to enhance the classic European look. Calcutta Gold marble and French white oak flooring complete the space.

American made chinoiserie wallpaper represents a new opportunity for designers as it replaces the more expensive and labor-intensive hand-painted method. The wallpaper sets the color scheme and period for the room, and is accented with the punch of Chinese red and oversized porcelains. The dark wood dining table sits on a rug that reinforces the traditional feel.

This guest room is beautifully appointed with nautical art and colors. The perfect place for a fun sleepover, twin bunkbeds create plenty of sleeping space. Leather ottomans at the foot of the bed are a durable and fashionable seating option for kid friendly spaces.

The pool area created a unique set of challenges for the builder and architect. Because the lot was fairly narrow and the orientation of the home had been changed, they had to be creative in working around their setback requirements. Abad’s solution was to cantilever the home, giving the exterior more visual interest while adhering to the city’s guidelines. The tiered Travertine pool was another clever solution, and creates a unique entertaining space. Large pink flamingos by Ed Koehler add a tropical pop of color to the neutral tones of the pool area.

Coconut Curry Lentil Soup

MAKES: 4 Servings:

1 cup dry red lentils, rinsed

1 can (14 oz) coconut milk

1 onion, chopped

2 carrots, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon curry powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

4 cups vegetable broth

1 tablespoon olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.

Add chopped onions and garlic, sauté until softened.

Add curry powder and cumin, stirring for about a minute.

Add lentils, carrots, coconut milk, and vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes until lentils are tender.

Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.

Classic Spaghetti Bolognese

MAKES: 4 Servings

1 lb ground beef

1 onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 can crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon olive oil

8 oz spaghetti

Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, sauté until softened. Add ground beef, break it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.

Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, cook spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain.

Serve the Bolognese sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.

Honey Garlic Glazed Chicken

MAKES: 4 Servings

2 pounds of chicken wings

5 tablespoons honey

4 tablespoons soy sauce

3 tablespoons olive oil

3 garlic cloves, minced Salt and pepper to taste

Chopped green onions for garnish (optional)

Preheat oven to 375°F.

In a bowl, mix together honey, soy sauce, olive oil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.

Place chicken wings on a baking dish and pour the honey garlic mixture over them, coating each piece evenly.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through, basting with the sauce halfway through.

Remove from oven and let the chicken rest for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Beef Stir-Fry with Vegetables

MAKES: 4 Servings

1 lb beef sirloin or flank

2 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

1 tablespoon sesame oil

2 garlic cloves, minced

1-inch piece of ginger, grated

2 cups mixed vegetables (bell peppers, broccoli, carrots)

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Cooked rice for serving

In a bowl, marinate the sliced beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger for at least 15 minutes.

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add marinated beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

In the same skillet, add more oil if needed and stir-fry the mixed vegetables until crisp-tender, about 3-4 minutes.

Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the vegetables, toss everything together for another minute. Serve the beef stir-fry over cooked rice.

Asian Glazed Salmon

MAKES: 4 Servings

4 salmon filets

3 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 tablespoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

2 cloves garlic, minced

Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish (optional)

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, and minced garlic.

Place the salmon in a shallow dish or a resealable plastic bag. Pour half of the glaze over the salmon, ensuring each piece is well coated. Reserve the remaining glaze for later.

Allow the salmon to marinate for at least 15-20 minutes.

Transfer salmon to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

During the last 5 minutes of baking, brush the reserved glaze over the salmon for an extra layer of flavor. Once done, remove from the oven.

Garnish the salmon with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve over rice or alongside your favorite vegetables.

Pan-Seared Pork Chops with Garlic and Rosemary

MAKES: 4 Servings

4 bone-in pork chops

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 sprigs fresh rosemary

1/2 cup chicken broth or white wine (optional)

Lemon wedges for serving

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Pat the pork chops dry with paper towels and season both sides with salt and pepper.

Heat olive oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add the pork chops and sear for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

Add minced garlic and rosemary sprigs to the skillet, spreading them around the pork chops.

If your skillet is oven-safe, transfer it directly to the preheated oven. If not, transfer the pork chops and aromatics to a baking dish. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F.

If desired, deglaze the skillet by pouring 1 cup of chicken broth or white wine, scraping up any browned bits. Allow it to simmer for a few minutes to create a simple pan sauce.

Serve the pork chops hot, drizzled with any pan sauce if made, and with lemon wedges on the side.
