Elevated Coastal

Panache Designs proudly presents its latest design triumph through the Coastal Pizzazz project. Located in Boca Raton, this design venture epitomizes the fusion of coastal charm and cosmopolitan flair. Renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship, Panache Designs has curated a coastal home that brings together the ambiance of the shoreline with the vibrant energy of urban life.

Drawing inspiration from the azure hues of the ocean and the sun-kissed shores, this home celebrates the essence of coastal living. Panache Designs’ expert team of interior designers has meticulously crafted spaces that showcase a relaxed yet refined home that fits the owner’s personality.

“They are a fantastic couple - she loves and works in the world of fashion, and I was struck with her wonderful sense of style,” says owner and founder Karen Press. “That love of style and her own impeccable taste really informed the design of the home.”

The couple also hails from New York so they wanted to infuse their own take on coastal living to their Florida home.

The modern home offers a palette of soft, sandy tones intertwined with bursts of aquamarine and seafoam greens and blues. This beautiful colorway brings a sense of tranquil elegance that permeates each room and offers the owners and their guests a relaxing atmosphere. The seamless integration of natural textures and contemporary accents reflects the Press’ creativity and her commitment to listening to each client

Design

she works with. “I love this project so much because the owners were really a dream to work with, but also because they trusted my vision,” she explains. “My goal is to always deliver a home that is as unique as each client and to make sure I am creating a space that reflects them. It’s such a rewarding experience to deliver a home that reflects my passion for great interior design and that tells the client’s story to everyone that walks into their home.”

The Coastal Pizzazz project is a testament to the company’s dedication to bespoke elegance. Every aspect, from the furnishings to the curated artwork adorning the walls, reflects an astute attention to detail. By capturing the essence of Boca Raton’s coastal lifestyle and infusing it with Panache Designs’ signature sophistication, this home stands as an emblem of exquisite design, where the coastal breeze and metropolitan allure converge in perfect harmony.

Great Beginnings

“This really was a renovation project,” says Press. “The home was built by a different owner before my clients purchased it so they basically were handed a blank box that we had to fill with style and personality.” That style can be seen as soon as you walk through the front doors of the home. Greeted by a large staircase and tall ceilings, Press infused the space with subtle color and fantastic textures, setting the stage for the rest of the home. An accent wall was covered in a gold wallpaper with mica accents which sparkle as it reflects the light from the stunning chandelier. The light fixture, from EuroFase, features hand pressed glass wafers that almost look like seashells since no two are alike. Press painted the banister and railings and added an eye-catching carpet to the stairs to create more visual interest and to modernize the room.

The focal point, a custom wall unit, offers a beautiful design element as well as storage. The high shine, wood laminate mimics the look of an antique mirror and creates a one of a kind piece the owners love.

Glamorous Entertaining

Just off the entry is the comfortable living room. More formal than other spaces in the home, four Armchairs have been arranged in a comfortable seating area, perfect for conversation and entertaining. The combination of gold Chenille and blue suede fabric is comfortable while remaining elegant and modern. The Missoni pillows match in the color theme perfectly and add a touch of playfulness to the room. The abstract, Nourison Home area rug brings an energy to the room thanks to the layers of soft gray highlighted by swirls of carved golden accents that add dimension. The focal point, a custom wall unit, offers a beautiful design element as well as storage. The high shine, wood laminate mimics the look of an antique mirror and creates a one of a kind piece the owners love. Lighting can be changed to match the mood, and large artwork perfectly completes the room.

Food for Thought

Featuring a continuation of the beautiful blue tones found in the Living Room, this space is the perfect place for a more formal gathering. Wainscoting and wallpaper have been added to whe was a very plain space to enhance the room and add visual interest. The wallpaper is infused with tiny crystals that catch and reflect the light for a little pop of glam. Press used another fabulous light fixture to bring warmth into the room and the soft curves and glass florals are the perfect accent to the space. The dining table features a matching buffet and is surrounded by chairs clad in floral embroidery. The suede seats and backs are durable and elegant for years of entertaining. The mother-of-pearl accent in the table and buffet is subtle but perfectly compliments the space.

Comfortable Elegance

One of the most dramatic changes can be seen in the family room. The once plain space has been transformed into a comfortable yet elegant area perfect for casual entertaining or family movie nights. A large sectional faces a media counsel with sliced geode drawer pulls. A custom bar area was added to create a second area for entertaining and offers more storage space and seating. Press added inlays to the cabinets and new bar area to create a more design forward space. The colors of the room are soft and relaxing and pull in the blue/ green tone of the kitchen cabinets creating a cohesive look. “I used elements like the swivel armchair and the area rug to bring the color from the kitchen into the family room,” says Press.

A custom bar area was added to create a second area for entertaining and offers more storage space and seating.

Open Spaces

The kitchen cabinets came with the home so Press decided she needed to find clever ways to include the costal, yet at times tricky, color into the living room and kitchen nook. “One of the biggest changes in this room was closing off the long window over the range,” she explains.

“While those windows bring in a little extra light, they break up the line of the cabinets and make the kitchen look shorter. And this kitchen it’s a small one!” Now, a solid stone slab creates a much more cohesive and upscale cooking environment.

The Nook

A breakfast nook offers the perfect start to the day. Using embroidery once again, Press continues the elegant color scheme. An organic light fixture with mixed metals draws in both the silver and gold found in the adjoining kitchen.

I used astroturf to add color and a more natural feel that’s easy to maintain, painted the wall this relaxing blue color to match both the living room and office, and then found these fun, sculptural pieces that the owners love.”

Working Well

Press was able to use one of the downstairs bedrooms to create a comfortable home office. The focal point of the room is the fun and vibrant geometric wallpaper. This blue theme is continued through the comfortable loveseat and then moves outside into a courtyard area Press completely transformed. “The original space was so cold and stark with pavers and walls the same boring light beige,” says Press. “I used astroturf to add color and a more natural feel that’s easy to maintain, painted the wall this relaxing blue color to match both the living room and office, and then found these fun, sculptural pieces that the owners love.”

Behind the bed, grasscloth has been installed for a natural finish and brings in different textures and shades of gold.

Bedroom Dreams

Press changed the flooring both in the master bedroom and the upstairs rooms and hallways. The darker wood floor now anchors the room, adding warmth to the primary space. The color palette brings in the same coastal tones found throughout the rest of the home, but they are more muted to keep the space calm and relaxing. Behind the bed, grasscloth has been installed for a natural finish and brings in different textures and shades of gold. The acrylic canopy bed offers a modern take on a much loved classic. Bedding adds a subtle pop of color and above, a traditionally shaped chandelier with a unique center column, brings in the urban sophistication the owners love so much.

Updated Design

Once again, Press was faced with a challenging cabinet color but chose to paint them to create a totally fresh perspective in the primary bath. “The original almond color pulled the light right out of the room - the new owners needed a light and bright bathroom to match the rest of the house,” says Press. She also added wallpaper with a fun print that enhances the elevated coastal feel of this important space.

Create a Festive Bar Cart Holiday Cocktail Hour

As the holiday season approaches, and entertaining at home ramps up, there’s no better way to elevate your holiday gatherings, than with fabuloso bar cart. Adding both style and convenience, a classing bar cart provides guests with a chic, interactive experience. Whether you’re hosting a large gathering or an intimate family get-together, this beautiful addition (great for year round festivities aswell) can serve as a conversation piece and an opportunity to showcase your creativity.

Selecting the Perfect Bar Cart

Before diving into the details, making sure you have the right bar cart is important. Consider the size of your space and the number of guests you’ll be hosting, as well as personal needs throughout the year. A bar cart is also a decorative item that you can use at any time so get one that functions well all the time. A small, two-tier bar cart works well for intimate gatherings and can fit in a smaller space, while a larger cart with extra storage may be necessary for bigger events. Look for a cart with wheels, as it allows you to move it around the party with ease, making cocktail hour truly mobile. To enhance the festive vibe, consider a cart in metallic finishes like gold, brass, or silver, which can instantly create a holiday feel. Alternatively, a sleek, black or glass bar cart

can add a modern, minimalist touch to your décor. Once you have your cart, it’s time to deck it out with holiday flair!

Festive Décor Touches

A bar cart is not just a practical element for serving drinks; it’s also a fantastic opportunity to showcase your holiday style. Adding fun and personal holiday touches will not only make it a functional centerpiece but also a decorative one.

Twinkling Lights: Stringing battery-operated fairy lights around the bar cart can create a warm and inviting ambiance. Opt for small, warm white or multicolored lights to match your overall holiday décor.

Ornaments & Garlands: Drape miniature ornaments or festive garlands along the edges of the cart to tie it into your holiday theme.

Seasonal Greenery: Sprigs of pine, eucalyptus, or holly can add a natural element to your bar cart. Place a small, seasonal arrangement in a vase or tuck greenery in between bottles for an organic touch.

Themed Barware: Swap out everyday items for seasonal versions. Think holiday-themed cocktail napkins, coasters with festive patterns, or drink stirrers shaped like snowflakes or reindeer. These small touches can really make a big difference in how cohesive and festive your bar cart feels.

Stylish Glassware

Glassware is one of the most important elements of any well-stocked bar cart. During the holidays, it’s your chance to bring out those special, stylish pieces that add a touch of elegance and charm to your cocktail hour.

Classic Rocks Glasses: For serving whiskey or bourbon-based cocktails, keep some heavy, crystal rocks glasses handy. Crystal glassware with a cut or etched design adds a vintage, holiday feel.

Champagne Flutes: No holiday celebration is complete without some bubbly! Keep a few sleek champagne flutes on the top shelf of your bar cart, and opt for gold-rimmed or festivepatterned flutes.

Coupe Glasses: A nod to vintage glamor, coupe glasses are perfect for serving cock tails like Manhattans or French 75s.

Highball Glasses: Keep highball glasses available for cocktails like gin and tonic, mojitos, or any tall, fizzy beverages that require more room for garnishes and ice.

Decorative Pitchers and Decanters:

A stylish pitcher or decanter can add an air of sophistication to your bar cart and filling them with pre-made cocktails allows guests to serve themselves.

Stocking Seasonal Spirits

To make your holiday bar cart truly festive, you’ll want to incorporate a selection of spirits that reflect the warmth and flavors of the season. Think of ingredients that are comforting, spicy, and fragrant.

Whiskey & Bourbon: These are winter classics, perfect for warming drinks and are perfect for Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, or a simple whiskey on the rocks.

Vodka: Versatile and neutral, vodka can serve as the base for a wide variety of holiday cocktails. It pairs beautifully with seasonal flavors like cranberry, apple, and cinnamon.

Spiced Rum: A wintertime favorite, spiced rum adds warmth to cocktails with its hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.

Cognac & Brandy: Cognac or brandy is a sophisticated choice that works well in classic holiday cocktails like the Brandy Alexander or a festive punch.

Liqueurs: Stock your cart with holiday-themed liqueurs like crème de menthe, ginger liqueur, or Grand Marnier to add a burst of warm flavor to your drinks.

Sparkling Wine: Whether it’s cham pagne or prosecco, sparkling wine is a must-have for festive occasions. Keep a chilled bottle on hand for those celebratory toasts.

Organizing Your Bar Cart

Now that your bar cart is filled with spirits, glassware, and festive touches, it’s time to organize it for maximum impact. Here are a few tips to keepeverything functional yet stylish:

Top Shelf:

Reserve the top shelf for the essentials — glassware, decanters, and any premixed drinks you want guests to try first.

Bottom Shelf:

Store your spirits and mixers on the bottom shelf, arranged neatly so that they’re easy to access.

Decorative Accents:

Place your smaller décor pieces, like mini ornaments or greenery, strategically around the cart without overcrowding it.

Coasters & Napkins:

Keep cocktail napkins and coasters in a small tray or holder for guests to grab easily.

Mantel Magic

Decorating Your Fireplace for the Holiday

The holiday season is the perfect time to transform your home into a warm, inviting space, and no area offers more decorating potential than your fireplace mantel. Whether you prefer traditional, rustic, or modern decor, there are endless creative ways to style your mantel with garlands, stockings, candles, and statement decor pieces.

Classic Christmas Charm

A classic Christmas mantel is timeless and elegant, bringing together traditional holiday elements that evoke feelings of nostalgia and warmth. To create this look, focus on deep, rich colors like red, green, and gold, combined with festive textures and natural materials.

Garlands and Greenery

Garlands are a must for any classic mantel design. A lush, green garland draped across the mantel instantly adds a festive touch. You can choose fresh garlands for a natural look that also brings a wonderful holiday fragrance into your home, or artificial options which can be just as beautiful and are reusable year after year.

For added dimension, layer your garland with sprigs of holly, red berries, or pinecones. You can also weave in gold or red ribbons, twinkling string lights, or beaded garlands to give it extra sparkle.

Stockings with a Personal Touch

No classic holiday mantel is complete without stockings hanging from the edge. Choose traditional knitted or velvet stockings in red, green, or white, and personalize them with each family member’s name for a charming, custom touch. Choose embellished stockings with embroidered designs, bells, or festive appliqués. Use stylish holders or decorative hooks to keep everything securely in place while adding visual interest.

Candles for a Warm Glow

Candles are essential for creating a cozy atmosphere. Line your mantel with pillar candles in varying heights to create a layered effect. Stick to a cohesive color palette, such as white or gold, for a sophisticated look, or incorporate red and green candles for a more traditional holiday feel. LED flameless candles are a great option that give you the look of real candlelight without the fire hazard.

Rustic Winter Wonderland

If you prefer a more natural, rustic aesthetic, embrace the beauty of the outdoors with a woodland-inspired mantel that feels cozy and inviting. Think natural materials, earthy tones, and understated decor that brings the warmth of the forest into your home.

Modern Minimalist Elegance

If you’re drawn to a sleek, contemporary look, consider going minimalist with your holiday mantel decor. Clean lines, metallics, and a neutral color palette create a chic, sophisticated display that still captures the festive spirit.

Sleek Garlands

Lit Faux Eucalyptus and Pine Wreath & Garland

Natural Greenery and Textures

Start with a base of lush, evergreen garland, but keep it understated. For a rustic feel, incorporate natural elements like twine, burlap ribbons, and dried orange slices. Adding birch branches, wooden beads, or antlers can give the garland a more organic, woodland-inspired appearance. For texture, you can use faux fur or wool accents. A woven basket filled with firewood next to the fireplace is another great touch.

Rustic Stockings

For a rustic mantel, swap out traditional velvet or satin stockings for those made of burlap, wool, or linen. Stockings in neutral shades like cream, beige, or brown can complement the earthy tones of the rustic look. Personalized wooden name tags or leather accents on the stockings will add a custom, artisanal feel.

Candles and Lanterns

To enhance the cozy, woodsy vibe, place wooden or metal lanterns with LED candles or fairy lights along the mantel. The warm glow will give your rustic display a soft, inviting ambiance, perfect for curling up next to the fire with a blanket. Additionally, wooden candlesticks or vintage-style metal candle holders can add an extra rustic touch while staying true to the natural theme.

For a modern mantel, less is more. Opt for a streamlined garland of eucalyptus or magnolia leaves, which provide a cleaner, more minimalist look. You can also skip the greenery entirely and drape a metallic or monochromatic garland across the mantel for a contemporary feel. Choose a garland in silver, gold, or even black for an ultra-modern vibe.

Modern Stockings

Minimalist stockings can make a subtle yet impactful statement. Look for stockings made of sleek materials like velvet, felt, or faux leather in neutral tones. Stockings with simple, geometric patterns or metallic accents can also enhance the modern aesthetic, and use slim, elegant stocking holders to complete the look.

Candles and Metallic Accents

Stick to clean, simple lines by using white or metallic candles in clear glass holders. A row of tall, slender candlesticks in gold or silver can add height and a sense of modern luxury.

Complement your minimalist mantel with sleek metallic accents like silver or brass vases, geometric sculptures, or minimalist holiday figurines.

Bold and Whimsical Holiday Decor

For those who love color and creativity, a bold, whimsical mantel is the perfect way to express your fun holiday spirit. Think vibrant hues, playful ornaments, and a mix of textures and patterns that create a cheerful, festive atmosphere.

Colorful Garlands and Lights

Set the tone with a bright and cheerful garland. You can use traditional greenery as a base, but dress it up with colorful ornaments, tinsel, and string lights in vibrant colors like pink, turquoise, and lime green. If you want to go all out, choose a garland

made entirely of multicolored ornaments or oversized pom-poms for a playful twist. Consider using rainbow-colored string lights or twinkle lights that change color to keep the display lively and engaging.

Playful Stockings

Whimsical stockings are a chance to get creative with patterns and designs. Look for stockings with fun, colorful prints, sequins, or pom-poms. Mismatched stockings in bright hues or ones featuring quirky characters can add to the fun and festive energy of the display.

Quirky Decor Pieces

The key to a whimsical mantel is adding unexpected decor elements that spark joy. Incorporate oversized ornaments, playful figurines, or even vintage holiday decorations to create a one-of-a-kind mantel. A set of nutcrackers, reindeer, or even a ceramic Christmas village can add a charming, nostalgic touch.

The A rt of Hygge

Embracing Comfort and Coziness

This Holiday Season

In today’s high-stress, high-pressure world, the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) offers a refreshing change of pace by encouraging us to slow down and savor life’s simple pleasures. At its core, hygge is about cultivating comfort, warmth, and coziness — whether you’re enjoying a quiet evening with a good book, sharing a meal with loved ones, or simply lighting a candle to create a peaceful atmosphere. Hygge is less about material things and more about the feeling of contentment and connection that can be found in everyday moments.

Origins of Hygge

Hygge has deep roots in Danish culture, where the long, dark winters have historically encouraged people to find solace in warmth and togetherness. The term “hygge” itself originates from a Norwegian word meaning “well-being,” and over time, it has evolved into a way of life that celebrates coziness, simplicity, and mindfulness.

Denmark consistently ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world, and many attribute this to the widespread practice of hygge. Instead of focusing on the cold and isolation of winter, Danes embrace the season as an opportunity to slow down, surround themselves with comfort, and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

Hygge isn’t just a trend or a passing phase; it’s a philosophy that encourages the discovery of joy in the everyday, to be present in the moment, and to create a sense of sanctuary in our surroundings. It can be practiced year-round, but it’s especially powerful during the colder months and the holiday season when people seek warmth, light, and connection.

The Principles of Hygge

1. Comfort and Coziness

The essence of hygge is creating an atmosphere of comfort. Do this by filling your space with soft textures, warm lighting, and cozy furnishings. Imagine a soft blanket, a crackling fire, and a pair of woolen socks — these are the physical embodiments of hygge. When you’re physically comfortable, it’s easier to relax and be present in the moment.

2. Simplicity and Minimalism

Hygge emphasizes simplicity in both design and lifestyle. This means embracing a minimalist approach to your home and your activities. Rather than filling your space with excess decor or gadgets, focus on meaningful items that bring joy and serve a purpose. Hygge is about decluttering your environment — and your mind — to make space for calm and tranquility.

3. Mindfulness and Presence

One of the most important aspects of hygge is being fully present in the moment. Whether you’re sipping a cup of tea, reading a book, or having a conversation with a friend, hygge encourages you to savor the experience and appreciate the simple act of being. This mindfulness creates a sense of contentment and reduces stress.

4. Togetherness and Connection

While hygge can certainly be enjoyed alone, it’s also about creating a sense of community and connection with others. Hygge moments often involve spending quality time with family and friends as you gather around a dinner table, play board games, or simply enjoy each other’s company. This sense of togetherness fosters happiness and strengthens bonds.

5. Nurturing the Soul

Hygge isn’t just about physical comfort; it’s also about nurturing your emotional and mental well-being. Activities like journaling, meditating, or practicing gratitude can be incredibly hyggeligt (hygge-like). The goal is to create a sense of balance and peace in your life by doing things that nourish your soul.

Incorporating Hygge Into Your Home

Warm Lighting - Lighting plays a huge role in setting the tone for a hygge environment. Harsh, bright lights can be overwhelming, while soft, warm lighting creates a calming atmosphere. To achieve hygge lighting, swap out overhead lights for lamps with soft, warm-toned bulbs. Candles are a quintessential element of hygge, providing both a warm glow and a sense of tranquility. Scatter a few around your living room, bedroom, or bathroom to create an inviting, serene space.

Cozy Textiles - Comfortable, soft textiles are essential to any hygge space. Invest in plush throw blankets, oversized cushions, and textured rugs to make your home feel like a cozy retreat. Natural materials like wool, cotton, and linen are great for adding warmth and texture. Layering these items can create a sense of abundance and comfort that invites relaxation.

Natural Elements - Bringing nature indoors is another key aspect of hygge. Incorporate natural elements like wood, stone, plants, and flowers into your decor. Wooden furniture, stone accents, or even a few potted plants can create a sense of grounding and connection to the outdoors, which is a key aspect of hygge living.

Decluttered Spaces - A clutter-free space is essential for creating a sense of calm and relaxation. Hygge encourages minimalism, so take some time to declutter your home and remove anything that doesn’t serve a purpose or bring you joy. Focus on creating a clean, organized environment where you can unwind without distractions.

Personal Touches - Finally, hygge is about making your home personal and reflective of your life. Display items that hold meaning, like family photos, cherished books, or handmade crafts. These personal touches add warmth and soul to your space, making it feel truly hyggeligt.

Practicing Hygge in Everyday Life

Savor Simple Pleasures

Hygge is about finding joy in the small, everyday moments. This could mean taking the time to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning without rushing, savoring a delicious homemade meal, or spending an evening curled up with a good book. By slowing down and appreciating these simple pleasures, you can bring hygge into your everyday routine.

Unplug and Be Present

In our digital age, it’s easy to get caught up in technology and lose sight of the present moment. Hygge encourages you to unplug from your devices and focus on the here and now.

Create Rituals

Rituals are an important part of hygge because they help create a sense of stability and comfort. This could be a weekly tradition of cooking a special dinner, taking a long bath on Sunday evenings, or enjoying a cup of tea in the afternoon.

Connect with Loved Ones

Host a small, intimate dinner party with close friends, play board games with family, or simply enjoy a cozy evening on the couch with a loved one. The key is to create moments of genuine connection that leave you feeling nourished and fulfilled.

Embrace the Seasons

Hygge is often associated with winter, but it can be practiced year-round. In the winter, focus on creating warmth and light indoors. In the summer, hygge can be about enjoying the outdoors, taking walks, or sharing meals on the patio. The key is to embrace the unique qualities of each season and find ways to incorporate hygge into your life no matter the time of year.

Old Florida MODERN DESIGN

When the owners of this Naples home approached Toscana Homes, they wanted to build something that paid homage to Old Florida style while remaining contemporary. Naples has seen an explosion of coastal contemporary homes in the last few years and now people are wanting to build homes with their own unique spin on this well-loved look.

This elegant home plays off the ideas of Florida Cracker architecture while incorporating modern elements to keep it relevant. “We kept the lines clean and simple which is a nod to the designs you would have

historically seen here. Also, houses of this style were characterized by metal roofs which we felt was an important design element to add,” says Richard Compagnone, one of two Principals at Toscana Homes. “From there we wanted to modernize how we used metal around the exterior, so we added a stainless steel front door.” The driveway pavers have been laid upside down to hide the pillowtop bevel which makes for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Backlit glass garage doors add a beautiful design element day or night and the landscaping brings in traditional Florida elements and pops of vibrant colors.

Just inside the home, the foyer sets the tone for the modern design found throughout.

Architectural stairs with stainless steel and glass railings create a floating effect and the open design of the treads means light can flow through the space. The chandelier and art niche showcase the owner’s love of contemporary art and design.

“The wine storage is one of my favorite elements in the home,” says Compagnone. “Originally this was just a large opening but we came up with this unique design that houses the wine in glass cases to provide some separation between the two living spaces.”

In the kitchen and family room, modern design reigns.

Top-of-the-line appliances are surrounded by flat paneled cabinets in muted tones. The island features a custom glass table connected to the larger prep space. The breakfast nook is topped with a modern sunburst light fixture. In the family room a wide sectional with a low back keeps sightlines between the two rooms connected. Throw pillows add a pop of color. Large sliding doors leading to the pool create an indoor-outdoor living experience. “The recessed lighting in the ceiling mimics beams—a modern take on a coastal element,” Compagnone explains. Millwork throughout the home has been kept sleek and simple to add the Old Florida feel.

The office is a working from home dream space.

Warm wood tones and natural leather come together to create a modern space with plenty of storage and fantastic views. The built-in houses floating shelves and a credenza with flat panels and minimal knobs for a sleek display area. Above the room, the ceiling features four floating, backlit squares with recessed lighting, continuing the theme of unique ceiling details and thoughtful design.

The master bedroom is also topped with an interesting ceiling.

The vaulted look is a nod to Old Florida while the design keeps it modern. Stopping before it hits the wall, it appears suspended over the room for a show stopping effect. The room’s tranquil base color of soft grey is enhanced by accents of blue which mimic the colors of the water outside. A comfortable seating area next to the oversized windows allows for beautiful morning views. The addition of chrome gives the room a little sparkle and abstract art above the bed ties the motif together.

The outdoor kitchen and seating area are featured under a wood-clad ceiling.

The modern furniture complements this old world accent. Plum colored furniture with chrome frames would be at home inside or out, and are a stylish addition to the room. The large gas grill is backed by tiles found in the kitchen to give the two spaces continuity. Artificial turf has been inlaid between stone pavers to create a traditional garden feel with an updated pattern. Pocketing screens protect the lanai from the elements and provide shade from direct sunlight.

“Old Florida homes were originally built around a layout that allowed the breeze to pass through, cooling the interior.

We now have air conditioning to do that, so the addition of so many windows is our take on that principle,” says Compagnone. From the rear elevation, it’s easy to see how the home’s interior is kept so light and bright, and the pool can be seen from almost every room. The raised pool allows for an infinity edge which creates a beautiful water feature when sitting in the lower fire pit area. While the bright blue tones are classic, their mosaic design lends itself to a more contemporary feel.

Holiday Lighting for Outside Your Home

As the holiday season approaches, the tradition of outdoor lights is a favorite one across the county. Whether you’re decorating a palm tree in Florida or putting lights up on the snow covered eaves of your home, using twinkling lights to bring festive cheer to the exterior of your home is a timeless tradition. Lights can help you create a magical winter wonderland or a minimalist, elegant design and offer endless creative possibilities. 1.

Designing a Show-Stopping Display

When planning your outdoor holiday light display, it’s important to think about your overall design and how different lighting elements will work together to create a cohesive look. Here are some design tips to help you create a stunning holiday display:

Choose a Theme

Before you start hanging lights, consider choosing a theme for your display. Having a theme can help guide your choices and ensure your display looks well-coordinated. Some popular themes include:

Classic Christmas: Stick with traditional red, green, and gold colors, and incorporate elements like wreaths, garlands, and bows.

Winter Wonderland: Use white and blue lights to create a cool, icy effect, and add snowflake motifs or icicle lights.

Rustic Charm: Opt for warm white or amber lights, and use natural materials like pinecones, burlap, and wooden accents.

Modern Minimalism: Keep the design simple with monochromatic lights and sleek, geometric shapes for a sophisticated look.

2.

Layer Your Lighting

A truly eye-catching display often features layers of lighting, which add depth and dimension to your home’s exterior. Start by outlining the architectural features of your house, such as the roofline, windows, and doors. Next, use additional lights to highlight trees, bushes, and

other landscaping elements. Finally, consider adding pathway lights or lanterns to guide guests to your front door.

Layering different types of lights — string lights, net lights, and spotlights — can create a more dynamic and visually interesting display.

Outdoor Holiday Lighting Trends

The world of holiday lighting is always evolving, with new trends and technology emerging each season. Here are some of the hottest trends in outdoor lighting to inspire your display this year:

LED Lights: Energy-Efficient and Long-Lasting

The shift from traditional incandescent lights to LED lighting has been one of the biggest trends in holiday decor. LED lights use up to 75% less energy than traditional lights, making them an eco-friendly option that significantly reduces electricity costs. Additionally, LEDs are more durable, lasting up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, which means less frequent replacements and reduced waste. LED lights are available in a wide variety of styles, colors, and sizes, allowing you to create any type of holiday display — from a classic, warm white glow to vibrant, multicolored strands. Because of their lower heat emission, they’re also safer for extended use, especially in areas where the lights may touch greenery or surfaces.

Icicle Lights: Create a Winter Wonderland

Icicle lights continue to be a popular trend, especially in areas where snow is scarce but the

3.

desire for a frosty, wintery look is high. These lights are designed to mimic the appearance of cascading icicles hanging from the eaves of your roof, porches, or windows. They create a delicate and enchanting effect that adds a magical touch to any home. Opt for warm white icicle lights for a cozy, classic look, or choose cool white or blue lights for a more modern, wintry effect.

Smart Lights: Control with Ease

Smart technology has made its way into holiday lighting, offering homeowners more control and flexibility. Smart holiday lights can be controlled via smartphone apps, allowing you to customize brightness, colors, and even create lighting schedules. Some smart lights can sync to music, flashing and changing colors in time with your favorite holiday tunes for a truly festive experience. Many smart lighting systems are compatible with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, so you can easily turn your lights on or off with a simple voice command. Plus, the ability to control your lights remotely adds an extra layer of convenience.

Projection Lights: Easy and Impactful

For homeowners who want a dramatic display without the hassle of hanging hundreds of lights, projection lights are an ideal solution.

Focus on highlighting the most important areas of your home’s exterior. The roofline and eaves are great places to start, as they define the shape of your house and are visible from a distance. You can also decorate porches, railings, and pillars to create a welcoming entrance. If you have

trees in your yard, wrap them in lights for added height and visual interest. Don’t forget about your yard! Pathway lights, stake lights, and illuminated figures like reindeer or snowmen can draw attention to your landscaping and add extra charm to your display.

These devices project colorful patterns, snowflakes, or festive images onto the exterior of your home. They’re easy to set up — simply stake the projector into your yard and aim it at your house. Projection lights can cover large areas, making them a time-saving option with a significant impact. Many projection lights are now LED-based, making them energy-efficient and long-lasting. Look for models with customizable settings, such as rotating patterns or adjustable brightness, to enhance the visual effect.

Solar-Powered Lights: Eco-Friendly and Budget-Friendly

For environmentally conscious homeowners, solar-powered holiday lights are a great option. These lights harness energy from the sun during the day and automatically turn on at night. Not only are they eco-friendly, but they also eliminate the need for extension cords or outdoor outlets, making installation easier and safer. Solar-powered lights are available in a variety of styles, from string lights to pathway lights, and are an excellent option for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint while still enjoying a festive display.

4.

Mix and Match

For a more personalized and eclectic look, don’t be afraid to mix and match different lighting styles. Combine icicle lights with string lights, or use a combination of warm and cool white tones to create contrast. You can also mix string lights with projection lights for a more dynamic effect, or alternate between steady and twinkling lights to keep your display visually engaging.

Sustainable Holiday Celebrations

Embracing Joy with Conscious Choices

As the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to gatherings, delicious feasts, exchanging gifts, and the vibrant atmosphere that makes this time of year so special. However, the festivities can often come with a significant environmental cost like increased waste and energy consumption. By adopting more sustainable practices, we can enjoy the magic of the holidays while reducing our impact on the planet.

Rethinking Gift-Giving: Thoughtful

and Sustainable

Choices

Gift-giving is a beloved holiday tradition and there are many ways to give meaningful, thoughtful gifts while also being mindful of the environment.

Choose Experiences Over Material

Gifts - Rather than purchasing physical items that may eventually end up in landfills, consider giving experiences. Concert tickets, museum memberships, cooking classes, or a weekend getaway offer lasting memories without the environmental impact of producing, packaging, and shipping goods. This approach also promotes connection and quality time with loved ones.

Support Local and Sustainable Businesses - When giving physical gifts, prioritize items that are sustainably made and support local artisans or businesses. Look for products that are made from recycled or renewable materials, are ethically produced, or have minimal packaging. Handmade gifts, whether it’s a knitted scarf or a jar of homemade

jam, can be more meaningful than mass-produced items. By buying local and handmade, you also reduce the impact that comes from transporting goods from overseas.

Opt for Second-Hand or VintageShopping at thrift stores or vintage shops is another eco-friendly option. Pre-loved items like books, clothing, or unique décor pieces can make wonderful, thoughtful gifts while reducing the demand for new resources. It’s also a great way to find one-of-a-kind treasures that have a story behind them.

Practice Minimalist Gift-GivingRather than overwhelming friends and family with multiple gifts, focus on quality over quantity. One thoughtful, well-made item is often more appreciated than a pile of presents that may not hold lasting value.

Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping: Creativity with Less Waste

Gift wrapping, while beautiful, can be incredibly wasteful, especially when using non-recyclable wrapping paper, bows, and plastic ribbons. In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that about 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper are thrown away each year during the holiday season. Here are some sustainable alternatives:

Reuse What You Have - Before buying new wrapping supplies, take stock of what you already have at home. Old newspapers, maps, or magazines can make for creative and stylish wrapping. Scarves, reusable fabric bags, or tea towels can serve as both gift wrap and part of the present.

Choose Recyclable or Reusable Wrapping - If you prefer traditional wrapping paper, opt for versions made from recycled materials and ensure it’s recyclable. Avoid shiny, glittery paper or anything with plastic elements, as these cannot be recycled. Reusable gift bags, baskets, or boxes are another sustainable choice and can be used year after year.

Get Creative with Decorations - Instead of plastic ribbons and bows, use natural elements like twine, dried flowers, or sprigs of pine. These can add a beautiful, rustic touch to your gifts and are compostable.

Sustainable Holiday Décor:

Celebrate with Nature

Holiday decorations bring warmth and festivity to our homes, but they can also generate waste, especially when it comes to plastic ornaments and single-use items. Instead of relying on disposable or synthetic décor, there are many sustainable ways to create a cozy holiday atmosphere.

Choose Natural Décor - Incorporating natural elements into your holiday decorations is not only sustainable but also aesthetically pleasing. Pinecones, evergreen branches, dried orange slices, and cinnamon sticks make beautiful, fragrant decorations that can either be composted or repurposed after the holidays.

Invest in Quality, Reusable Decorations - If you prefer store-bought decorations, invest in high-quality items that can be used for many years. Avoid single-use or cheaply made plastic items that are likely to break or wear out quickly. Handcrafted

ornaments or heirloom-quality decorations add a personal touch and can become cherished family treasures. When possible, look for decor made from materials that are also compostable like wood, wool, or glass

Make Your Own Decorations - Homemade decorations are a great way to get creative and involve the whole family. From paper snowflakes to salt dough ornaments, there are countless ways to create festive décor using materials you already have at home. Not only is this more sustainable, but it also allows you to personalize your holiday space in a meaningful way.

Consider the Christmas Tree Debate

- One of the most significant holiday decoration debates is whether to choose a real or artificial Christmas tree. While artificial trees can be reused for many years, they are often made from non-recyclable plastics and eventually end up in landfills. Real trees, on the other hand, are renewable, biodegradable, and can be recycled as mulch. Many farms also plant new trees to replace the ones that are cut down. If possible, buy a tree from a local farm or consider a live potted tree that can be replanted after the holidays.

Mindful Holiday Feasts: Reducing Food Waste

Holiday meals are a central part of the celebration, but they also generate a significant amount of food waste. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, about 40% of food in the U.S. goes uneaten, and holiday gatherings contribute to this staggering figure. To reduce food waste consider incorporating the following ideas into your menu and meals.

Plan Your Meals Carefully - Careful meal planning is key to reducing food waste. Estimate how much food you’ll need based on the number of guests and avoid over-preparing. Stick to a well-thought-out grocery list and resist the temptation to overbuy.

Support Local Food Producers - When shopping for holiday meals, buy locally produced, organic, or sustainably sourced ingredients when possible. Shopping at farmers’ markets or supporting local growers helps reduce

the carbon footprint associated with transporting food long distances. It also supports your local economy.

Use Leftovers Creatively - Leftovers are inevitable after a holiday meal, but they don’t have to go to waste. Get creative with your leftovers by turning them into new dishes. For example, turkey can be transformed into soups or sandwiches, and mashed potatoes can be made into savory pancakes. Freeze anything you can’t eat right away, and compost food scraps whenever possible.

Spreading

the Message: Inspiring

Others to Celebrate Sustainably

Celebrating sustainably is not just about personal choices; it’s also about inspiring others to join the movement. Share your sustainable holiday practices with friends and family in a positive, non-judgmental way. Consider hosting a zero-waste holiday party or organizing a gift exchange that focuses on experiences or handmade items.

Encouraging children to get involved in sustainable celebrations is another powerful way to create lasting change. Teaching kids about the importance of conservation, recycling, and mindful consumption can instill values that they’ll carry with them into adulthood, helping to ensure a more sustainable future.

The flavors of the season are warm and welcoming with an emphasis on a great balance of savory and sweet. Classic dishes bring a bit of nostalgia to your celebration and are always a crowd pleaser. Here are some wonderful recipes, from apps to mains and everything in between, that will help you get dinner on the table whether you’re hosting a small gathering or enjoying full house.

Cranberry and Orange Glazed Ham

SERVES: 8-10 people

1 spiral-cut ham (bone-in or boneless, about 8-10 pounds)

1 cup cranberry sauce (homemade or store-bought)

½ cup orange juice (freshly squeezed)

Zest of 1 orange

⅓ cup honey or maple syrup

¼ cup Dijon mustard

¼ cup brown sugar

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

¼ teaspoon ground allspice

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Fresh rosemary sprigs (optional for garnish)

Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Line a roasting pan with foil or parchment paper to make cleanup easier.

Place the spiral-cut ham, flat-side down, on a rack in the prepared roasting pan. If the ham is not pre-sliced, score the surface in a crisscross pattern, making ½-inch deep cuts.

Cover the ham loosely with foil and bake it for about 1½ to 2 hours, or until it reaches an internal temperature of 120°F (49°C). This allows the ham to gently warm while you prepare the glaze.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine all the other ingredients (other than the fresh rosemary). Stir the mixture well and bring it to a simmer. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the glaze thickens slightly and the flavors meld together. Remove from heat and set aside.

After the ham has warmed for about 1½ to 2 hours, remove it from the oven. Increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C). Generously brush about half of the cranberry-orange glaze over the ham, making sure to coat the surface and get into the slices (if using a spiral-cut ham). Reserve the remaining glaze for basting and serving.

Return the ham to the oven, uncovered, and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, basting every 5 minutes with the remaining glaze. The glaze should caramelize and create a shiny, sticky coating over the ham.

Once the ham reaches an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C), remove it from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh rosemary sprigs (optional) for a festive touch, and serve with any extra glaze on the side for drizzling.

Three-Cheese Scalloped Potatoes

INGREDIENTS:

4 large russet potatoes (about 2 pounds), peeled and thinly sliced (⅛-inch thick)

1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded

½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

2 cups heavy cream

1 cup whole milk

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing the dish)

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter and set it aside.

Peel the russet potatoes and use a mandolin or sharp knife to thinly slice them into ⅛-inch thick rounds.nSet the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning while you prepare the cheese sauce.

In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until warm, but not boiling.

In a separate large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the flour to create a roux, cooking for another 1-2 minutes until the mixture is lightly golden.

Gradually whisk the warm milk and cream into the roux, making sure to whisk constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the sauce thickens, about 4-5 minutes. Add the cheddar,

(Serves 6)

Gruyère, and Parmesan cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth. Season the cheese sauce with salt, pepper, thyme, and a pinch of nutmeg (if using). Remove from heat.

Drain and pat the sliced potatoes dry. Arrange about one-third of the potato slices in an even layer on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour about one-third of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Continue layering the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce in the same manner, finishing with a layer of cheese sauce on top.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly, and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Remove the scalloped potatoes from the oven and allow them to cool for about 10 minutes to set before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Spiced Mulled Wine with Cinnamon and Citrus

(Makes: 4)

INGREDIENTS:

1 (750 ml) bottle of red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Zinfandel work well)

1 orange, sliced (plus extra slices for garnish)

1 lemon, sliced (optional)

2 cinnamon sticks

4 whole cloves

2 star anise pods

¼ cup honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)

¼ cup brandy (optional, for an extra kick)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

Fresh rosemary sprigs or cinnamon sticks for garnish (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a large pot, combine the bottle of red wine, orange slices, lemon slices (if using), cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Stir in the honey or maple syrup and brandy (if using) for added depth and warmth.

Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Be careful not to let the wine boil, as this will evaporate the alcohol and change the flavor. Once it starts to simmer, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer gently for 15-20 minutes. This allows the spices and citrus to infuse the wine.

After simmering, taste the mulled wine and adjust sweetness as needed by

adding more honey or syrup. Stir in the vanilla extract (if using) for an extra layer of flavor.

Strain the mulled wine through a fine mesh sieve to remove the spices and citrus slices. Serve the mulled wine warm in mugs or heatproof glasses.

Garnish with fresh orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or a sprig of rosemary for an extra festive touch.

Creamy Sage and Garlic Butternut Squash Soup

INGREDIENTS:

1 large butternut squash (about 2-3 pounds), peeled, seeded, and cubed

2 tablespoons olive oil

(Serves 4)

1 medium onion, chopped

4 garlic cloves, minced

1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried sage)

4 cups vegetable broth (or chicken broth)

1 cup heavy cream (or coconut milk for a dairy-free option)

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Fresh sage leaves, for garnish (optional)

Crusty bread, for serving (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the cubed butternut squash on a baking sheet and drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Roast for 25-30 minutes, or until the squash is tender and caramelized on the edges. Stir halfway through for even roasting.

In a large pot, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes, until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Once the squash is roasted, add it to the pot with the onions and garlic. Stir in the chopped sage and cook for another 1 minute to release the flavors. Pour in the vegetable broth (or chicken

broth) and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Remove the soup from heat and, using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth and creamy. Alternatively, transfer the soup in batches to a blender and blend until smooth, then return it to the pot.

Stir in the heavy cream (or coconut milk) and season the soup with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg (if using). If the soup is too thick, you can add a bit more broth to reach your desired consistency.

Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with fresh sage leaves and a drizzle of cream if desired. Serve warm with crusty bread on the side for dipping.

Bourbon Pecan Pie with Vanilla Bean Whipped Cream

SERVES 8

INGREDIENTS:

For the Bourbon Pecan Pie:

1 unbaked pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

1 ½ cups pecan halves

1 cup light corn syrup

¾ cup light brown sugar, packed

3 large eggs

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

¼ cup bourbon

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon salt

FOR THE VANILLA BEAN

WHIPPED CREAM:

1 cup heavy whipping cream, chilled

2 tablespoons powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste

(or 1 vanilla bean, seeds scraped)

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Roll out your unbaked pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim and crimp the edges, then set the crust aside in the refrigerator to chill while you make the filling.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the corn syrup, brown sugar, eggs, and melted butter until smooth and well combined. Add the bourbon, vanilla extract, flour, and salt to the mixture, and whisk until fully incorporated. Stir in the pecan halves, making sure they are well coated in the mixture.

Pour the pecan mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading the pecans out evenly. Gently tap the pie dish on the counter to remove any air bubbles.

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the filling is set and the center no longer jiggles. The pecans should be golden and the crust should be lightly browned. If the edges of the crust start to brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil or a pie crust shield halfway through baking.

Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the filling to set.

Once the pie has cooled, slice and serve it with a generous dollop of the vanilla bean whipped cream on top.

MAKE THE VANILLA BEAN WHIPPED CREAM:

While the pie is cooling, prepare the whipped cream. In a large bowl, combine the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla bean paste.

Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the cream on medium-high speed until soft peaks form, about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to over whip, as you want a light and fluffy texture.

Baked Brie with Cranberries and Walnuts

(Serves 6)

INGREDIENTS:

1 round of brie cheese (8-12 oz)

½ cup cranberry sauce (homemade or store-bought)

¼ cup walnuts, roughly chopped

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon fresh rosemary (optional, finely chopped)

Crackers, baguette slices, or sliced apples (for serving)

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Place the brie round on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a small oven-safe dish. If you like, lightly score the top of the brie in a crisscross pattern with a sharp knife. This allows the cheese to melt evenly and helps the toppings soak in.

In a small bowl, mix the cranberry sauce, walnuts, honey, brown sugar, and chopped rosemary (if using). Stir until the mixture is well combined. Lightly toast the walnuts in a dry pan over medium heat for 3-5 minutes before adding them to the cranberry mixture.

Spoon the cranberry and walnut mixture over the top of the brie, spreading it evenly. Place the brie in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the brie is soft and melted inside. Be careful not to overbake, as the cheese can become too runny.

Remove the baked brie from the oven and let it sit for 2-3 minutes to slightly firm up.

Transfer the brie to a serving platter and serve warm with crackers, sliced baguette, or apple slices.
