MODERN AESTHETICS BY CHANNING SPANO PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE ANDERSON

L

ocated in Lake Park, this home is not only set in a coveted neighborhood, it also offers modern aesthetics inside and out. A beautiful sunlit interior and spacious living areas perfect for someone who wants a peaceful oasis in the middle of all that Naples, Florida has to offer. “The location is one of my favorite things about this listing,” says Principal Broker, Chris Wells. “Lake Park is one of the most centrally located communities in Naples and this home is perfectly situated to take advantage of shopping and dining, as well as the beautiful beaches just across the Trail.” In addition to location, the threebedroom, four-bath home offers a stunning marble-clad kitchen which includes a designer appliance package, a western-facing covered poolside lanai, and discreetly positioned open air courtyard, enhancing the outdoor living area. The airy master suite opens to the pool, beautifully landscaped backyard, and maintenance-free synthetic lawn.

BIG ON STYLE

The home’s contemporary design starts with the exterior. The straight and clean lines with minimal details are mimicked in the landscaping. The symmetry of the home both in its architecture and the vegetation is attractive and helps to enhance the modern feel as you approach. Large format pavers in varying sizes create more visual interest.

CONTEMPORARY CUISINE The kitchen is a study in marble as the entire wall behind the cooktop is clad in the elegant stone. Its monochromatic design is enhanced by the espresso-colored cabinets on the far end of the room which house the other important appliances. The large island is perfect for entertaining.

FLEXIBLE LUXURY “All the rooms in 1218 are filled with natural light. The home is designed with high ceilings and windows placed to beautifully capture the sun,” says Wells. “The home’s contemporary style is still very warm and inviting, so if you’re just wanting to relax after a day out on the beach, the furnishings and design work for comfort. However, if you want an evening with friends, the home décor can be beautifully formal.” The home’s white on white great room is accented by pops of blue and orange. Comfortable sectionals and sofas create a U-shaped main seating area that is afforded views of the beautiful landscaping through large sliding doors.

STUDIOUS SPACE The office is more masculine than the rest of the home while still keeping true to modern design. Warm colors are cleverly introduced into the room through the art piece, wooden legs of the floor lamp, and the books and accessories on the tailor-made built-in shelves.

MODERN SLEEP

TRANQUILITY REIGNS

The master bedroom’s focal point is the dark wood headboard wall that provides separation between the bathroom and the master suite. As in the other rooms, this space is minimalistic with a focus on specific accessories that drive the design story forward.

The master bath is clean without feeling clinical. The headboard wall doubles as a bank of cabinets which provides plenty of storage so cosmetic accessories and towels can be stored out of sight. This keeps the bathroom, especially counters, uncluttered which is a hallmark of contemporary style. The master bath also features a dual vanity and a large soaking tub.

OUTSIDE SPACES The home’s emphasis on indoor/ outdoor living can be best seen from the pool deck and lanai situated in a private courtyard design. Perfectly proportioned for the home, the linear pool’s design extends to a sunbathing area with white lounge chairs. The space is anchored by a maintenance-free synthetic yard that’s green yearround and a row of attractive palm trees, perfect for the home’s gulf town location. This home is offered at $2,488,000. STYLE SPOTTER DESIGN TRENDS FOR THE NEW YEAR BY OLIVER NASH

A

NEW YEAR ALWAYS brings a fresh perspective. From your personal life to your style to your home’s aesthetic, most people find themselves wanting to create new habits and infuse new life into their spaces and daily routines. Last year has definitely brought some new perspectives. We have come to understand what’s really important in our lives and what we can live without, while still having a full and rich existence. Our focus has turned towards the home, a place where we do so much living these days. This shift has taken us back to our roots. Historically, home and the small community surrounding it, was the place where people spent the vast majority of their lives. Family and friends were close, providing important support networks, and the physical home itself was more than just a place to sleep at night. It was the school, it was the office, it was the restaurant, and the gathering space for celebrations. It tethered people to their lives and communities in a very tangible way. Events throughout history have influenced design, so it’s no surprise that we are seeing that happen again. For example, after World War II, a generation of veterans with young families looking for ways to build their lives created the need for inexpensive housing and furnishings, causing a boom in design and production. People were optimistic about the future and commercial jet travel encouraged a growing fusion of cultural

influences. This led to a blurring of Eastern and Western aesthetics in interior design. There was also a shift in the way families lived at home. The elaborate pre-war households were gone, replaced by informality and adaptability. The idea that furnishings had to be expensive, statuesque objects was also gone as new materials and technologies developed during wartime were used to create increasingly abstract and lower priced, mass-produced objects. Innovators like Charles and Ray Eames developed their highly influential “LCW” chair based on their wartime experiments. Designers across the country wanted to promote American design through the Good Design movement, which promised life-enhancing products for any budget. As events shape our lives today, the trends for 2021 in furniture and accessories are impacted as well. Our renewed time at home means people are looking for ways to refresh their spaces and create a place that brings peace and stability to their lives and the trends reflect that desire. A return to home has created the desire to return to a design aesthetic of yesteryear that’s updated for our modern sensibilities and that can be seen in the top three emerging trends for 2021. A love of antiques, the shift towards warm tones, an embrace of familiar textures and prints, and a focus on nature or sustainability, these styles are finding their way into décor and home fashion this year.

COTTAGECORE

A

t its heart, Cottagecore embraces a simpler, sustainable life in harmony with nature. It is idyllic escapism that looks to life beyond cities and modern technology, and brings an appreciation for simpler living. The design style gives a nod to the traditional English countryside through romantic nostalgia. In fashion and online, you may have noticed dainty daisies, wild cottage flowers, and warm tones popping up on fabrics and photos which is a sneak peak of the style we will be embracing this year. Cottage style décor, furniture, and styling can be easily emulated in your own home. If you’re longing for wildflowers and slow-living in a cozy home, these are three key elements of Cottagecore to incorporate as you bring this style into your own rooms.

NATURE

Cottagecore embraces a love of wild flora and fauna, and the natural setting that accompanies countryside cottages. The sounds of birds, the colors of the outdoors, the smell of summer coming through open windows—in Cottagecore, inside is just an extension of outside. Bring in nature with houseplants and choose a natural color palette with warm tones. Use large foliage displays and wild flowers over more manicured hothouse blooms. This style embraces the fluidity of wild plants and flowers versus the structure of something like succulents that have been very popular over the last few years. These less rigid flowers also dry well, and dried or pressed flowers can be used in design, reminding us of simpler times when people wanted to preserve the beauty of their flowers, not always rushing to buy new ones as soon as the color began to fade.

14 | YOU R HOME M AGAZIN E®

SUSTAINABLE STYLE

A core tenant of this style is the belief that we can and should live more sustainably, returning to a simpler era as we embrace what nature gives us and what we can create with our own hands. While there are manufacturers that create pieces that work well with this style, shopping at vintage or antique stores is not only in keeping with this design theme, it’s also the perfect way to find treasures that add layers of depth and history to your home.

DAINTY DETAILS

You probably noticed an overabundance of “prairie style” dresses with small flowers and delicate leaf prints in the stores and all over social media this summer. Just like those dresses, basically a modern take on Little House on the Prairie, dainty details are a staple of Cottagecore design. Vintage lace tablecloths and handmade décor that’s one-of-a-kind is the ideal. Intricate floral or checked prints are the perfect accessory to rustic furniture and aged walls.

DISTANT SHORES

W

hile we might not be traveling as much, design inspired by far off lands is still strong, especially when it comes to a relaxing beach trip. Perfect for the oceanside setting Florida has to offer, the laid-back lifestyle of Hawaii in particular has been reimagined in this next trend. Interiors inspired by distant shores offer a calm and relaxing living space making home an inviting place to recharge. By adding a contemporary edge to a classic floral design, the Distant Shores trend takes tropical brights, subtle monotones, and soft yellows to a new level to inspire your everyday life. As in Cottagecore, these naturally inspired elements are used to bring outside indoors, and then introduction greenery into homes. Besides fabrics, digital prints are another great way to create the feel of a tropical resort, and are designed to work in any home with complementary color palettes. A return to global inspiration is sure to be a hit and here are some ways you can include this style into your home.

NATURAL WOOD

Think of a home found on the shores of Hawaii and chances are you will picture a mix of dark and light woods. Rattan, bamboo, ohia, koa, and mango wood are all commonly used in Hawiian furniture and design, and add layers of color and texture to your design. These classic materials can take on new life when used in modern ways, so there’s no need to worry your home will look like something out of the 1960s. Natural woods are modern and elegant.

COLOR

A staple of this style, and of 2021, naturally inspired color can be used as an accent in linens and in art, or as the palette for a whole room. Earthy reds and oranges, ocean blues, foliage greens, and warm neutrals can come together or be used in small doses to create a travel-influenced home.

PATTERNS

When emulating this design style, patterns play an important role. From organic shapes to modern, structured lines, patterns can be used in every room. And while tone on tone patterns will work, this is a style where you can play with bolder options. Leaves and corals in bright green and saturated red are beautiful against a contrasting background.

YOUR HOME MAG AZ INEÂŽ | 17

INDUSTRIAL STYLE

A

third trend you will see this year will be a move towards an industrial interior style. Industrial style refers to fuss-free, no-nonsense décor that takes inspiration from the look of warehouses, factories, and industrial structures. Comprising stripped-back architectural details like the use of bare bricks, metals, and wood, salvaged and recycled materials are also used to achieve this look. This ability to use reclaimed or antique items is one of the reasons this style is gaining popularity. As with Cottagecore, people want grounding design that adds history and depth to their homes. This is just a more masculine way to achieve that look. With this focus on reclaimed items, one of the main benefits in creating an industrial style home is the opportunity to customize the look using furniture and décor that are completely unique to you. This is a fuss-free style that is gaining popularity as people look for new ways to change their interior design scheme into something that creates a mix of modern and traditional design. This design style works in all settings, not just urban environments. So here are some themes to keep in mind to incorporate this style with confidence.

COMFORT

While it might seem counterintuitive based on the name, when creating an industrial style room, keep comfort at the forefront. Furniture should be minimalist, but that doesn’t mean comfort should be sacrificed. Choose furniture that has a simple design with solid upholstery in natural textures and neutral colors.

COLOR AND TEXTURE

An important part of this style is creating the right palette. For example, when designing an industrial living room, stick to a base of neutrals like gray, black, and white, then add pops of warm colors through accents. Bring in your own personality with vibrant art, throw blankets, and bold pillows that provide a contrast to the monochromatic décor. From there, it’s about the different textures you add to your space. This can come from the metals, wood, and stone, so this style is perfect for people who love exposed beams, ductwork, or brick walls.

ACCESSORIES AND LIGHTING

Limit accessories to just the most impactful items to keep surfaces clutter-free and clean. When choosing your accessories, look for pieces that have history to them but still remain contemporary. Pair with modern elements like large abstract wall art or metal structures with a structural feel. Lighting is an important accessory in this style, with most people choosing metal pieces in a combination of pendants and lamps. Pendants should be low hanging with wide shades and multi-directional floor lamps are a wonderful way to add this style into your home. Of course, look for reclaimed lighting whenever possible.

THE COLOR OF INSPIRATION Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams

Aegean Teal by Benjamin Moore

Passionate by HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams

L

ast year brought about some impactful and chaotic changes. With that in mind, many companies have chosen colors that are serene and soothing to help you create a peaceful environment. As we work from home, school from home, and just spend more time in general at home, the colors you surround yourself with have become more important than ever. Here is a roundup of the leading color and design companies’ choices for colors of the year.

URBANE BRONZE BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS This warm neutral is Sherwin-Williams’ color of the year. Urbane Bronze SW 7048 is a bold and grounding shade of gray-brown inspired by nature and intended to reflect serenity and stability. The gray undertones balance the natural brown to create a comforting color reminiscent of well-loved metals or timeworn stone. Urbane Bronze is intensely saturated while still subtle, making a sophisticated statement in any room. Perfect for a den or bedroom because of its cozy feel, it also lends a contemporary look to builtins or kitchen cabinets when walls are finished in a warm white to offset the richness of the paint. The bold shade also works well in smaller doses, such as on your front door or an accent wall in the living room. Natural materials like wood, stone, and woven textures enhance the color’s organic feel. For depth, choose accents that supply a variety of textures, such as worn leather, faux sheepskin, and aged metals. This color is available at Sherwin-Williams stores nationwide.

AEGEAN TEAL BY BENJAMIN MOORE Benjamin Moore has selected a soft and soothing blue-green for its color of the year. Aegean Teal 2136-40 brings tranquil blue and a soft green together with a gray undertone to keep the color modern. In keeping with the theme of nature and harmony people are searching for in their homes, the color

20 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®

invites you to take a moment to reset with its calming qualities. This makes it a great choice for bedrooms or home offices, or it can create casually elegant kitchen cabinets. Benjamin Moore has released 11 other organic colors this year in their color trends palette. Aegean Teal can be paired with buttery yellows, creamy off-whites, and deep earthy hues. To enhance the color’s warmth, decorate with natural materials like wood, stone, and brick for a balanced and textured look.

PASSIONATE BY HGTV HOME BY SHERWIN WILLIAMS HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams predicts vibrant, daring colors will be the trend of choice in the coming year. Passionate HGSW2032 is a rich and saturated tone, connecting the modern and traditional. The bold yet elegant hue, named color of the year by HGTV Home, joins nine nature-inspired shades in their Delightfully Daring Color Collection,

Aqua Fiesta by Glidden

Farrow & Ball

Cherry Taupe by Valspar

VALSPAR 2021 COLORS OF THE YEAR

which can be found exclusively at Lowe’s. As we spend more time at home, we are paying more attention to the things that make us truly happy. This year, people will be immersing themselves in color, breaking free from expectations to create personalized oases. Passionate’s deep red creates an vibrant backdrop for neutral furniture and nature-inspired accents. For a more dramatic look, try pairing it with other vivid shades from HGTV Home’s collection, like Long Horizon, a classic blue, or the refreshing green Cloverfields.

AQUA FIESTA BY GLIDDEN Taking a new view, Glidden has, for the first time, announced an accent color as their color of the year. Aqua Fiesta PPG1147-4 is a bright, refreshing aquamarine that looks great on an accent wall or millwork. While it might be a little overwhelming as an all-over wall color, this vibrant blue-green makes a splash in small doses when combined with other neutral paint colors. The brand suggests pairing Aqua Fiesta with a cool gray to create a spa-like ambiance that’s perfect for bathrooms. In bedrooms or living areas, layer in cream-colored fabrics and neutral accessories to soften the color’s boldness.

Also thinking out of the box, Valspar has named 12 cozy muted colors as their top picks for the new year. Ranging in tone from misty blue to warm apricot, the hues were chosen for their ability to provide calm and encourage mindfulness. As homes become offices, classrooms, and our main gathering areas, the colors in our rooms have a large impact on our daily lives. The collection of colors features a mix of beautiful neutrals like Gallery Grey, Maple Leaf, and Soft Candlelight, while warm, organic colors, like Cherry Taupe (pictured), offer a warmer option while still subtle and sophisticated. The paint colors are all available at Lowe’s and other independent paint stores nationwide.

FARROW & BALL 2021 COLORS OF THE YEAR England-based paint company Farrow & Ball selected 12 restful shades this year. From earthy neutrals to rich natural colors, the shades were chosen by the company’s color curator to reflect the broader trend which is leaning away from cool greys and blues and embracing warmer, organic colors. The collection is divided into four distinct categories and colors can be combined to form timeless schemes. The collection includes chocolatey hues with strong red undertones, fresh yet familiar blues, lush greens with gray undertones and earthy colors that offer an elegant alternative to white. Perfect for a range of rooms from the entryway to your home office, the company’s commitment to non-toxic paint and manufacturing makes them an appealing option to people looking for a more natural option.

Heart(s) of the Home T H I S Y E A R ’ S K I T C H E N & B AT H T R E N D S

HOME DÉCOR ISN’T THE ONLY THING GETTING A MAKEOVER IN 2021. THE KITCHEN, THE HEART OF THE HOME, AND THE ALL IMPORTANT BATHROOM, ARE ALSO SEEING DESIGN CHANGES AS WE ENTER THE NEW YEAR. HERE ARE THE MAIN TRENDS TO WATCH OUT FOR AS YOU PLAN A NEW BUILD OR REFRESH YOUR CURRENT HOME. 32 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E®

Kitchen COLOR

The days of the all white kitchen might be numbered. This year we will see a return to color in the kitchen as people want to customize their spaces more than ever. Kitchens are filled with surfaces that love color, from appliances and flooring, to window treatments and cabinets. If you feel a little hesitant to dive right into this trend, a good way to start is by deciding how much of a permanent commitment you are willing to make. Maybe a bright blue island isn’t for you, but wall colors can be easily changed if you decide to go in a different direction. Color is such a personal thing, so choose something that will make you happy in a few years, not just the trendiest option based on current fashion.

W O O D F I N I S H E S This retro trend has not been seen in mainstream design re-

cently, but it’s making a comeback this year. Wood-faced cabinets add warmth to your kitchen while still providing a neutral backdrop for other design elements. Use woods with a subtle grain and minimal stain to keep the look modern and natural. Part of the appeal of this trend is

embracing a more minimalist look, and these cabinets also pair well with industrial home décor. This trend looks really beautiful paired with stone or concrete.

D E E P & D A R K Darker kitchens have been gaining popularity and are predicted to continue to be popular for many reasons. Often overlooked as purely an accent color, black is having a moment. Not only is black liveable while being luxurious, it works with textured woods adding rustic, homey charm. For homeowners with a love for all things modern, shiny black cabinets, black marble countertops with stunning white veins, black floors, and even black appliances are an interesting addition to their kitchen. If you love this idea in theory but aren’t ready to commit to an entirely black kitchen, don’t be afraid to start small. A black backsplash or an accent wall is a great way to begin to incorporate this trend. C U R AT E D D E S I G N A focus on design continues as people want to feel totally comfortable while spending more time at home and the kitchen is getting an upgrade in design and décor. A curated look means thoughtfully designed visual spaces styled with original artwork, decorative ceramics on open shelves, cookbooks stacked in the corner, and other unique accents carefully placed to achieve an instant lived-in look. The goal is to add personality, creating a space that feels inviting and warm. This kitchen is a nostalgic one where people feel inspired to bake, try new recipes, and generally slow down surrounded by the comfort of familiar and personal treasures. YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 33

Bathroom B O L D B AT H If there is a room in which to implement a design update, it’s the bathroom. These smaller rooms offer the opportunity to try new ideas, as they are private areas and closed off from the rest of the home. Want to paint the walls red? Do it in the powder bath for a fun surprise when guests arrive. Love that bold wallpaper but not sure how it will look in a larger space? Use it in your master bath instead. Bathrooms are now less confined to traditional whites, polished ceramic, and a clean contemporary feel. People are becoming more confident about bold design in bathrooms and powder rooms. This year will be all about bringing the outside in (see page 25), so creating a sanctuary in your bathroom can include murals and wallpaper that infuse vintage charm with modern sensibilities through natural motifs. T H E H O M E S PA

After a difficult year, it’s no surprise that people want to create an oasis in their home, and the bathroom is the natural starting point for a spa-like experience. Scented candles, luxury fittings, rich textures, and unique finishes—there are a variety of ways to create your very own spa retreat in your master bathroom. These oases at the heart of the home are a place to privately unwind, and this trend embraces a quiet sense of individualized luxury. You can create this atmosphere though something as simple as candles while you take a bath, or it can be fully enjoyed by outfitting your bath with things like massaging showers, hydrotherapy baths, and state-of-the-art steam rooms and saunas.

F LU T E D SU R FAC E S

Picking up steam this year, fluted surfaces, especially on cabinetry, is going to be a hot trend among those looking for a visual and tactile combination in their bathroom. These ribbed surfaces which are reminiscent of Art Deco glamour, have been given a contemporary twist. Perfect for

34 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®

the bathroom where you can introduce forward-thinking design, delicately ribbed vanities and cabinets provide subtle interest and look especially upscale when the ribs are kept natural. Even shower doors can get in on this trend as decorative, vertically grooved glass offers more privacy than flat glass and takes your bathroom design to a whole new level.

WA R M TO N E S

We cover this more in depth in our color article on page 20, but warm, earth-inspired tones are here and ready to be used in your bathrooms. Inspired by the current desire for comfort and warmth, natural pigments like terra cotta, rust, caramel, and biscuit are wonderful additions to your bathroom, and work well with any design scheme from modern to rustic, as long as you accessorize well. A natural area to find these colors is in your tile, so look out for tiles in earthy colors and tactile finishes. Try contrasting them with black fixtures or stone counters to add definition. These tiles also look wonderful next to unfinished wood as a companion to the natural warmth these tiles bring. If you aren’t ready to replace or commit to tile, you can also paint the walls of your bathroom in these warm tones, or dip your toe in the water by adding accents through ceramics, towels, and rugs.

GATHERING SPACE In the home’s great room, the cathedral ceiling features poplar scissor beams stained in Weathered Teak which creates a dramatic effect leading the eye to the view of the pool and lake through large sliding glass doors beyond. Limestone in a grey finish lines the wall to match the scale of the room, while an attractive seating arrangement of cream-clad sofas and armchairs provides a wonderful gathering space. Naturally aged White Oak flooring finished in La Jolla anchors the room and extends through the main living areas of the home.

ELEGANT OPTIONS Placed at one end of the dining room, the temperaturecontrolled wine room with frameless glass walls offers ample room for even the most extensive home wine collection. The warm glow from the abstract art provides another elegant feature in the already beautiful dining area.

DELICIOUS MEMORIES The formal dining room is perfectly set to create memories with family and friends. The espresso-stained table is flanked by lighter wood chairs with open backs and tall host and hostess chairs. An attractive buffet placed in a wallpapered niche offers serving and storage space. Above the room, the stained wood ceiling features an intricate design and showcases John Cannon Homes’ ability to create masterful design details customized to each client.

TAKE IT EASY

CHEF’S PREP

The bonus room is a great space for casual entertaining or a night with family, and is enhanced by the pocketing glass doors which open to the outdoor living areas. A comfortable, neutral sectional is complemented with pops of green and blue, while natural wood accent chairs continue the feel of the West Indies architecture. The dark stain accentuates the ceiling with details laid in a chevron pattern between box beams. Outside this room, the outdoor kitchen is accented by a bold, weathered, teak-stained wood ceiling, and provides an generous, al fresco dining space.

The kitchen features two distinct areas for maximum function. The main portion of the kitchen is suited for everyday family use, while the chef-grade prep kitchen is complete with a bright yellow gas BlueStar range. The unique maple wood framed window finished in Portobello is not only decorative, it allows for clean sight lines in the main kitchen area which makes the space feel like an upscale dining experience. A contemporary mix of Zodiaq and Quartz countertops are as functional as they are beautiful and the maple cabinets in the two distinct areas are finished in Designer White and Portobello.

COMFORTABLE LUXURY Restful colors and textures abound in the master suite. At the far end, a sunlight seating area provides a space for reading or coffee in the morning overlooking the pool and lanai. The main portion of the room is enhanced by a ceiling of one-by-six foot tongue and groove inserts stained in Weathered Teak to continue the West Indies feel. Mixed metals in the lighting choices and draw pulls on the flanking nightstands add shine to the room. Blue, light taupe, and white are used to bring a calming feel for optimum rest.

THOUGHTFUL DESIGN The home also features two separate master baths, each offering unique design schemes. Her bath is a retreat in calming white with large format Carrara Pure tiles on the floors and a tranquil asymmetrical tub by Kohler takes center stage. Large planters and the painted chevron detail adds visual interest to the tone on tone space. Maple cabinetry in Designer White is combined with Natural Walnut to continue the spa-like feel of the room. The modern, open feel of the bathroom embraces an abundance of natural light through ample windows.
