ALFRESCO LIVING

In recent years, outdoor living and entertaining has become ever more popular, whether its for hosting family gatherings, entertaining guests, or simply enjoying meals in the fresh air.

outdoor areas that make hosting outside a breeze.

One excellent way to achieve this is by incorporating an outdoor kitchen into your back garden or patio. An outdoor kitchen be more likely to create something really special.

While larger gardens offer more flexibility, those with limited space can still be transformed into a stunning oasis with the addition of an outdoor kitchen. A small garden should never be viewed as a limitation when it comes to creating a glorious outdoor space!

Large Or Small

Whether your space is large or small it doesn’t really matter too much. In smaller areas its how the space is configured that counts, so even a tiny kitchen will lend a sense of convenience and pragmatism. In larger areas, as much as humans love open space, we also really enjoy human scale design, so either way an outdoor kitchen is a great way to break free from the confines of indoor walls and make the most of your outdoor environment.

The key components are a heat source for cooking, work surface, serving surface, some storage, ideally a water source for hand washing and some low energy lighting. How rustic or luxurious you go with it is up to you.

The first thing to consider though is the kitchen layout, which might be a little different to whatever you have indoors if potentially you’ll be catering for more sociable events with larger-than-usual numbers of people. You might want want to be able to see the faces of your guests in between turning the sausages or stirring the pot, in which case you might want to be facing out towards them. Alternatively you might prefer to keep the hot stuff off to the side or the back against a wall or fence, away from excitable children. In this instance a peninsula style arrangement might give you the best of both worlds, both socialising and safety, so consider your priorities before deciding on what you think looks nicest.

A well-thought-out layout will enable you to make the most of your outdoor kitchen, regardless of the available space.

You want easy access to all necessary items to ensure smooth workflow during food preparation and cooking, so storage for ingredients, utensils and serve ware close at hand is essential. Consider factors like the proximity of the grill to the prep area, adequate counter space for food prep, and the placement of a sink to give you the greatest convenience possible. Compact kitchen islands or L-shaped configurations can provide ample countertop area for food preparation while maximizing floor space for movement. Also when it comes to pizza ovens, these don’t have to be monolithic brick structuresyou might prefer a compact one that sits on the countertop!

MULTI-FUNCTION PIECES

Incorporating features that serve multiple purposes is always a good idea, for example, installing a bar counter with integrated storage shelves underneath would be ideal. Or it might be more beneficial to build in seating around a dining table. Similarly, integrating a built-in fire pit or fireplace can create a cosy ambience, extending the usability of the space into the cooler evenings. By incorporating versatile elements, you can ensure that your outdoor kitchen caters to a wide range of activities and provides year-round enjoyment.

We all know how much better we feel when we are connected to the nature, and that the best design tends to seamlessly integrate with natural surroundings. By designing your outdoor kitchen in harmony with both your property and the landscape, you can create a cohesive and inviting aesthetic. Incorporating appropriately natural and ideally local materials is the best way to do this. Natural elements like stone, wood, and of course greenery will always trump man-made shop bought furnishings wherever possible, of course, and will only enhance your connection with nature whilst enjoying those delicious meals. Another thing to consider is how transient or permanent you want your kitchen and dining area to be, before committing to any custom designs or bespoke in-builds.

Folding tables and chairs can be stored away when not in use, freeing up valuable space. .

If you are keen on the sleek, modern look then you might prefer to construct a clean lined kitchen one using an eco-concrete. Or if delightfully ramshackle and rustic is more suited to you then you’ll likely prefer timber. Either way you can also maximise vertical space with shelves, hooks hanging racks to maximise storage capacity for your utensils, cookware, and other kitchen essentials, without occupying valuable floor area.

Green Fingers

Vertical space does not need to be saved only for storage however, it can be great for gardening too. Incorporating vertical planters or trellises allows you to liven up your design with greenery using a minimal footprint. Utilise walls, fences, or even the sides of your outdoor kitchen structure to create vertical greenery. Not only does this add beauty and freshness to your space, but if you opt to grow herbs here it also provides easy access to fresh ingredients for your outdoor cooking endeavours!

During the peak summer months, shade becomes essential for a comfortable outdoor kitchen experience. However, in a small garden, installing large shade structures can take up valuable space and overpower the area. If your garden is still young and the trees and plants are still yet to be able to provide any shade then consider pretty parasols or shade sails to provide protection from the sun while maintaining an open and airy feel in your outdoor area.

Inspiring Lighting

Thoughtful lighting design can transform any garden into a cosy and inviting space after dark. Strong overhead light sources will feel overpowering and uncomfortable so instead consider softer options such as festoon string lights, wall-mounted sconces, or LED strip lights under counters. You could even celebrate a special tree with a colourful uplighter wash, and create a little bit of magic along a winding footpath with twinkly lights in the ground - whether they’re simple candles of jars or solar powered orbs. It is definitely worth remembering to add in some safety lighting for any late night lemon chopping for cocktail shaking, and being certain your meat is thoroughly cooked through on that barbecue before feasting. With careful planning and creative design ideas, you can transform your garden into a delightful spot that serves as an extension of your living space, offering countless opportunities for enhancing your lifestyle and encouraging you to spend more time outdoors.
