Our projects take a different direction each year. Last year’s project, A 1000 Flowers, part of the City wide Bloom! festival, was broadly craft-based in terms of the making techniques involved, so this year’s project will have more of a focus upon drawing. The Place Where I live The Place Where I Live will involve participants drawing, painting, designing, writing or perhaps doodling or sewing “maps”. The maps can be real or imaginary. They can describe the physical place where people live…. or perhaps the places where they conceivably could… or would like to live….. We will be working with Partners such as York Minster, to supply images to inspire and motivate participants…..

Dressmaking
What is it? Santa’s Socks is York Learning’s Community Craft project, now in it’s seventh year. We ask members of the local community to sew, applique, knit or crochet Christmas stockings that are then filled with sweets and distributed through York Food banks, IDAS and other local York Homeless charities. Last year, we collected and filled over 700 stockings!
How can I get involved? Make a stocking no more than 35cm long and 20cm wide otherwise they become too big to fill! You can find lots of templates online but please make sure they are safe - make sure buttons or embellishments are securely attached and don’t use staples. If making stockings isn’t your thing, please donate Stocking Fillers! Sweets that are pre-wrapped and in date (not homemade) and stationary are ideal... anything that will fit inside a stocking. Find out more at www.yorklearning.org.uk or call Claire on 07990 774420.
Stockings and donations need to be dropped off at West Offices or your local library by Friday 29 November.

In the meantime why not read what some of our current learners have to say about their learning experience with us at level 2, 3 and 4. York Learning made my journey to start a new career easy. There’s support whenever you need it and the teaching is much more personable than I’ve ever experienced. So glad I’m doing this through them and very grateful they exist!! Charly, Level 3
The overall depth and quality of the course is excellent. The tutors are warm, supportive and yet at the same time challenging which is exactly the right combination as they have guided us in developing the skills to become counsellors. Roger, Level 4 38
www.yortime.org.uk
The course is well paced and the teacher was very approachable. The lessons at level 2 were managed well and easy to understand. The reading material reflected the level and every topic was covered thoroughly before we moved on to the next. The price of the course was fair and made affordable by allowing people to pay in instalments Cathy, Level 2

Explore your libraries of the future – 2034 and beyond... Earlier this year, Explore won the City of York contract to provide Libraries and Archives for York for another 15 years. We are so very happy to be able to build on our successes of the last five years. Our vision for the future places “learning and opportunities for everyone” at the heart of all we do. Libraries in the 21st century are innovative, creative spaces, enabling everyone in the community to come together, to experiment and share, to learn something new and to celebrate difference. These are the values of Explore Libraries and Archives and we would love you to be part of the success. How can you get involved?

Further information about our courses and services Cost of our courses All of our courses are individually priced due to several factors: • varying course hours; • the numbers that can attend; • and/or specialist facilities or venues. For many of the courses you will see three prices: • first is the full price that most people will pay • second is for those who are claiming the state pension • third is for those claiming universal credit, although entitlement to universal credit is not an automatic justification for a reduced fee due to the nature of how it is calculated. Please ring on 01904 554277 for clarification and support or go to yorklearning.org.uk/ policies and look at the fee policies under ‘Booking Your Course’. You are required to produce evidence of entitlement to a reduced fee within two weeks of enrolment. If you fail to do this we may cancel your place.
Can I spread the cost of the course fee? Spread the cost of any course over £120 via direct debit with four payments spread over 4 months. We are occasionally able to set up payment schedules over a longer period of time, but this cannot extend beyond the end date of a course.
60
Please note that once a direct debit is started you cannot cancel it without confirming with us that this is ok. Cancelling without permission will result in us invoicing you for the full amount. It is important to understand that direct debit is not a method of paying for part of the course – just a way of spreading the full cost of the course over a number of months.
Can I get any help with course costs? We understand that for some people the cost of an adult learning class can be a barrier to attendance. At times we might be able to help with course costs including; travel, books, materials or if appropriate, childcare. Please ring 554277 to see if you’re eligible for support.
Examination fees All exam and registration fees are included in the cost of a course unless stated otherwise. However, if you complete a course and are unsuccessful in your final exam we will ask you to pay an additional fee to re-sit the exam.
Refunds A full refund will be given under the following circumstances: • The course time or date changes after you’ve signed up and you can no longer attend. • The course closes because there are insufficient numbers on the course. • You signed up over the phone or via our online booking system and change your mind
within 14 days of the booking. Please note this does not apply if the course starts within the 14 day period or if the course has already started when you book. We only offer a refund outside of these reasons in exceptional circumstances. Once a course has started we cannot offer any refunds as the fee helps to pay for the course itself. All refunds offered in exceptional circumstances will be subject to a ÂŁ15 administration fee.
Supporting you to sign up for the right course If you are unsure whether a course is suitable or not, please contact us and we can either advise you over the phone or arrange for a one-to-one appointment. Where there are several different levels of a course it is best to contact us to discuss which level would suit you. Some of our courses, including English, maths and some computer courses, require you to take an assessment prior to starting the course. This is to ensure you are on the correct course.
Booking a place on a York Learning course Some of our courses fill up very quickly. This is because our policy is to offer current students, who have attended for the previous term, priority booking. We also offer 24-hour advance priority booking to learners who sign up for our newsletter (see page 4 for details).
Equal opportunities York Learning welcomes learners from all backgrounds and is committed to providing the best possible experience for everyone. We aim to provide a safe, comfortable and non-threatening environment that is free from discrimination. Our goal is to support everyone to achieve their potential and to enjoy their programme. We will not tolerate behaviour that discriminates, intimidates or disrupts other learners and will take appropriate action to ensure this does not occur.
