ASK THE EXPERT

Hair and Beauty Q&A

Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she reveals all about Botox. What is it? Botulin Toxin is a purified protein extracted from Botulinum bacteria used for anti-ageing treatments. It is administered as an injection, commonly used in the upper part of the face to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. It can also be used to reduce excessive sweating from the armpits. How does it work? The collagen in our skin eventually wears away as we age due to overactive muscle movements. The reduction in collagen can cause the skin to crease and produce undesirable effects such as crow’s feet, frown lines and lines on the forehead, which can be very ageing. Botulin works by relaxing these muscles which causes the skin to relax as well. Lines and wrinkles are smoothed out or disappear all

together. The Botulin protein only produces its effects on the muscles it is administered to therefore there will be no effects on other parts of the body. How is the treatment administered? Botulin is injected in very small doses in numerous areas, using a fine needle. There is usually very mild to moderate pain experienced with this treatment, which should subside very quickly. The wanted effects should

appear within a few days to a week of treatment and can last for three to five months, therefore it is desirable to go for repeat treatments every three to five months to maintain the desired effects. Treatment for excessive sweating can last for up to 12 months. All treatments are carried out by fully qualified and experienced doctors. Are there any side effects? Post treatment there is no scarring and no recovery time, therefore

you can continue with your usual day-to-day activities as normal. In the rarest of occasions the protein may have effect on other muscles nearby and cause weakness of these muscles. However, this is a very uncommon side-effect which is only temporary, lasting a few weeks at the most. It is possible there maybe very slight bruising at the site of injection, otherwise usually no visible signs at all. Offering a variety of Murad products, and with treatments ranging from facials and non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. n Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.

Save us a place on the top table After the thank you cards have been sent and you’re settled into married life, you might be stuck as to what to do with those giant loveheart centrepieces that made such an impact at your wedding. Sure, you can use one as a garden ornament, but the other 14 are just cluttering up your garage – along with the bridesmaids dresses, church candles and lanterns. So what should you do with all of the excess accessories after the big day? Thanks to The Hospitium, you can put them to good use and get some cash back, too. On 19th January from 11am-3pm, the venue will host a wedding table top sale, benefitting both newlyweds and brides- and grooms-to-be. Stall holders can book a six foot table for £15, and browsing is 50p per person. n Email Jenn.Cork@ymt.org.uk or call 687671.

DON’T HAVE A DENTURE CRISIS THIS CHRISTMAS!

Urban exploration She’s been a good girl recently, so we sent sales whizz Mim off to try out Urban Image Hair and Spa. I went into the salon on Holgate Road and was met by Jen the Spa Manager. She was lovely and took me to the champagne nail bar where I had a Opi Gel nail treatment – along with a glass of fizz! The atmosphere in the salon was great and having all the staff chatting away to their clients made it really bubbly. I then went downstairs to a tranquil beauty room where Jen took me through a questionnaire to make sure my facial was specifically designed to my skin. I was totally pampered and very chilled out during this process and as well as the moisturising facial I had the pressure points on my feet and also my head massaged. I’ve already booked to go again! n Visit the competitions page to for a chance of winning a free visit yourself. To book your appointment, call 633660.

new year, Start …Cycling. 2014 sees the Tour de France, the most watched sporting event in the world, come to Yorkshire in July. The second day of The Grand Depart will be winding its way through York and the city will celebrate with a massive cultural festival. A great time to pump the pedals and don a yellow jersey. …Running. If you’ve been inspired by our very own Helen and Rach’s marathon success then 2014 is year to get going. The Leeds Half Marathon takes place in May, and the 10K returns in July. York’s very own version of the 10K follows soon after in August. …Writing. Your Local Link columnist Donna has a new book, The Nightingale Nurses, which has recently been released. We’ve all be inspired by her to pen our own magnum opus and so should you. If you’ve ever fancied being a novelist then 2014 is the year to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and get writing.

Stop …Moaning. Sounds harsh, we know. But if there is something in your life that really bugs you – something you can’t help but moan and complain about such as your job, relationships or pastimes – try to make a change in 2014. By next December you’ll be happier and have only the weather to grumble about. …Going on Facebook. Here’s a fact for you: there is an estimated 17 billion Earth-sized planets in our galaxy alone, any number of which could harbour life. With that in mind, why would anyone care what you had for lunch? There is an entire universe out there beyond the dim glow of your phone and your Facebook app. Check it out, it’s far more interesting than arguing with strangers or stalking your ex. …Doing that. We could go on and on about smoking, drinking, caffeine, sugar and all the other things we put inside us that are bad… but we’re not. If you enjoy something to excess just think about what resolutions you might be making this time next year – or the year after. If you’ve been putting off quitting something, do it right now.

RICHARD III (19th-30th November)

AN EVENING OF BURLESQUE (30th November)

DICK WHITTINGTON (20th-30th December)

York Theatre Royal and Nottingham Playhouse present this production which explores the parallels between the devious Richard, who is full of paranoia, humour and irresistible charm, and our modern world of political monsters.

CINDERELLA (7th-31st December) Children and adults alike will be swept along by the magic and mystery of Cinderella. You’ll be whisked off your feet as you whirl through a world of firesides and chandeliers. TongueTied Theatre and Telling Tales come together to transport you into Cinderella’s very own ballroom in the De Grey Rooms.

ALADDIN AND THE TWANKEYS (12th December-1st February) If you’ve not seen a York Theatre Royal panto before, book now and find out why they receive consistently high praise from national television and press coverage. No matter where you hail from, you’ll be warmly welcomed and hooked for life! This year Berwick Kaler returns in the role of the Dame to whisk the audience away upon a magic carpet for a lamp, genie and joke filled adventure.

102

Sashaying Royal Academy-trained burlesque bombshells slip into exotic character as smoothly as they slip out of the most exotic couture costumes ever to grace the stage. Prepare for evocative Arabian Nights, fabulous fan dancing fantasies and foxy 1940s sirens. It’s the slickest, wickedly wittiest, most delightfully choreographed cabaret spectacular of the year.

SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (13th December-5th January) Emmerdale star Adele Silva stars as The Wicked Queen, with Hollyoaks’ Marcus Patrick as the Huntsman and Any Dream Will Do’s Rob McVeigh playing the Prince. Hairspray star Lauren Hood appears as Snow White and pantomime regular Aiden J Harvey makes a welcome return to York as Muddles, as does popular Dame, Phil Randall.

A spectacular all new production of the classic story starring CBeebies favourite presenter Alex Winters as Dick Whittington, Dancing on Ice finalist Chloe Madeley as Alice Fitzwarren, Coronation Street heartthrob Danny Young as the hilarious Idle Jack, and London’s Burning and Bad Girls star Kim Taylforth as Queen Rat.

JOSEPH ROWNTREE THEATRE To book: 623568

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK (7th-14th December) With gags galore, big music and dance numbers and traditional slapstick, Rowntree Players are once again promising a brand new rollicking romp of a panto! Jack’s family are caught without power one summer, but – thanks to the idea of Jack’s little brother – the sails of the windmill will once again turn after everyone goes on a strict diet of beans.

FRIARGATE THEATRE To book: 613000

MEASURE FOR MEASURE (5th-8th December) 1913 Vienna is the setting for York Shakespeare Project’s production of Measure For Measure. The multicultural city seethes with innovation and revolution while the politicians glance nervously at the Balkans, a powder keg waiting to explode.

UP STAGE THEATRE, MONKGATE To book: 674675

GIVING UP THE GHOST (29th-30th November) Once Seen Theatre Company present the story of the grey lady.

A survey has revealed that a third of British women would rather have a box of chocolates than a kiss, so getting the lady in your life some chocolate is a pretty safe bet. But with such a vast array of options available now, it’s difficult to know which ones to choose. Fear not – we have expert advice on hand so that you won’t be in the dog house this Christmas.

About

last night… As Christmas party season comes into full swing, the inevitable office dinner and drinks do looms on the horizon. These parties tend to have the same sort of people attending each year, so check out our list of Christmas party characters and work out which one you are. The Organiser: This is the person who tirelessly organised the

whole evening, including booking the venue and sorting out the food. They tend to be a tad stressed on the night itself and are prone to barking at anyone who doesn’t seem to be enjoying themselves enough.

The Flirt: You know what we mean; every office party has one. This

is the person who, when removed from their work station and given a glass of cheap plonk, suddenly becomes lecherously interested in everyone else there. Watch out for any of your colleagues sitting too close to you and any ‘accidental’ touching of thighs. Seriously, run.

The Peak-too-sooner: This is the person who seems so

incredibly excited by the whole thing that they will have a few too many drinks before the party starts and begin dancing in the mini bus on the way there. Their enthusiasm tends to burn out quickly though, and you will see them slumped fast asleep under the buffet table at 9.30pm.

MILK OR DARK? So, what sort of chocolate should you go for? Sophie Jewett from York Cocoa House says that ladies tend to prefer milk, whereas gents are usually fans of dark chocolate. “It's a bit of a generalisation, but there's something around the comforting effects of milk chocolate that women find most attractive,” says Sophie. “My key for choosing chocolate flavours is to look at the other things the lady enjoys; if they tend to enjoy white wine and sweet things it's safe to choose milk chocolate, but if they prefer full bodied red wines and strong flavoured cheeses I would choose dark chocolate.” PERFECT PACKAGING Sophie adds that looks are everything when it comes to chocolates. “Whatever it is make sure it looks exciting. We eat with our eyes long before we have tasted the chocolate, so a lot of the anticipation is about opening an exciting box of chocolates and smelling the lovely rich scent before you eat them.” AIM TO IMPRESS If you really want to give your gift the wow factor, Fran Guppy from Guppy’s Chocolates suggests going for truffles. “Chocolate truffles are always a good gift for a special occasion as they are quite luxurious and decadent,” says Fran. “Also, chocolate connoisseurs will really appreciate single origin chocolate, especially chocolate from a really good quality cocoa bean like a Criollo bean,” Fran adds. Want to add a bottle of wine to your gift? “Go for a red wine that doesn’t contain too much tannin so that it will complement the chocolate,” advises Fran.

Thanks to our lovely advertisers for their tips! Visit www.yorkcocoahouse.co.uk & www.guppyschocolates.co.uk If you’re buying for a few chocoholics in your family, head to York’s Chocolate Story on 5th December for a ten per cent discount when you spend more than £25 in store. What’s more, you can sample the festive delights at the shop, as well as chocolate mulled wine. Yum! Visit www.yorkschocolatestory.com or call 0845 498 9411.

The No-show: This is the person who, for the past couple of months at least, has shown great interest and enthusiasm for the party… then never shows up. They might have even had a hand in planning the shindig before making an excuse about getting themselves there. At least a bit of entertainment will come from hearing their excuse the next day. “Oh, traffic was terrible. And there was snow. And a yeti.”

The Crier: Every party has at least one of these, and they’re as

unwelcome as a gate-crashing rhino. For whatever reason one of your colleagues will suddenly find themselves overcome with emotion about a detail of their personal life and you will end the night with a damp shoulder and funny looks from everyone else which say “What’s up wither her?” or even worse “What have you done?”

The Uninvited: Speaking of gate-crashers, rest assured that one of

your work mates will have invited their partner or best friend to tag along. Sit back and watch the disgust on the face of The Organiser as they eat pre-paid food and drink from every bottle of wine going. As this person doesn’t have to deal with any embarrassing repercussions the next day in the office, they tend to make an absolute boob of themselves. n Do you know of any other usual party types? Let us know, along with any humorous stories, at www.facebook.com/locallinkyork

BUON NATALE! The festive season is a great time to catch up with friends old and new over a meal, and if you’re anything like us you’ll end up as stuffed as the turkey by the time the big day rolls around. But sometimes we can somewhat lose our lust for pigs in blankets if we overindulge before 25th December. Fear not, there’s no need to pass up on delicious food with your friends – we’ve got just the thing! Caffe Dell Opera 3, a new restaurant on King Street, will serve up a delectable selection of Italian fare that’s cooked by a chef to the stars! Edmar Gervasio was flown in by the team from Milan, where he had cooked for Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armarni. Their traditional three course Italian Christmas menu features a range of options including duck, slow cooked beef and fresh fish – and of course, for you die-hard fans there’s a gorgeous turkey option complete with pigs in blanket, too. n Visit www.caffedellopera3.co.uk or call 634584.
