You’re probably going to feel as though you’re suffering from déjà vu when we tell you this, but you’re not: we’ve moved offices again. Well, when we say moved offices, the sales team have had to swap places with the creative team as they’ve expanded, and we thought we’d better give the lovely new salespeople a chair to sit on instead of a shelf. So, we all packed our belongings into spotted handkerchiefs on sticks and made our way across the drive. So far the only casualty has been Howard’s Battlestar Galactica mousemat which has mysteriously disappeared. If anyone in Haxby finds it, you may be
interested to know that Howard is offering a reward of large amounts of biscuits and tea. It’s a dog’s life In between moving offices and welcoming new members of staff, we’ve become something of a home for four-legged friends. However, we don’t reckon we’ll be offering a professional dog-sitting service any time soon. It all started when Sarah’s mum’s dog came to stay, which was lovely for a bout five minutes until he ended up being barred from the sales office for disorderly conduct. If barking really loudly and putting the sales team off their calls wasn’t enough, he was rubbish at taking messages. You should try reading his paw-writing.
The canine capers continued when Tracy brought in Tank, a lovely, friendly little thing. Well, he is as long as no other dogs are around. Our customers may well have met Poppy, Gini’s dog, as she makes regular visits to the office due to being permanently attached to Gini’s other half, Mick (though not literally physically attached – Mick is just a regular bloke, not some sort of weird dog/man hybrid). Naturally, Poppy has a sense of ownership over the Your Local Link office, being top dog and all that. You can imagine what happened next. War zone Let’s just say that ‘When Poppy met Tank’ wasn’t exactly like ‘When Harry met Sally’. Fur bristled, the air was filled

with the sound of yapping and Gary and Matt took refuge underneath their desks until Kelly and Mim had sorted the pooches out. Thankfully no actual fighting took place, though Sarah still has to assure Dave that the doggies have gone before he’ll set foot in the sales office. Needless to say, we’ve not had any dogs in the office for a while… So, if you need anyone to dog-sit, please feel free to ask someone else. We’re going to stick to advertising.
Until next mont h!

Stage magic
Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no valley low enough… to keep you from seeing this show. That’s because you’ll want to experience the finest sounds ever to come out of the city of Detroit, where the Motown label began, that you’ll literally move a mountain to win tickets for The Magic of Motown. Strutting onto the stage at The Grand Opera House on 21st June, The Magic of Motown features songs from The Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops and many more. A live band and all-star cast will transport you back to the hay-day of Motown
classics. Find out more at www.grandoperahouseyork.org.uk
We have two pairs of tickets to give away, so to sign, seal and deliver them, all you have to do is answer this question: In which American city did the Motown label start? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Magic of Motown Competition’ to the address on page five, or via email to info@yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 14th June, so don’t delay. Terms and conditions apply. Good luck!
Your significant other There’s more theatrical fun with our second ticket giveaway. York Light Opera Company presents The Boy Friend at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre (18th-22nd June). The musical takes place in a finishing School on the French Riviera. Polly, an English heiress, falls in love with Tony, a delivery boy. Conscious of her father’s warning to beware of boys dating her for her family’s money, Polly pretends to be a secretary. Find out more at www.yorklight.com To be in with a chance of winning one of three pairs of tickets for the show on Wednesday 19th June all you need do is answer this easy question: What is the character Tony’s job? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘The Boy Friend Competition’ to the address on page five, or via email to info@yourlocallink. co.uk The competition ends on 11th June, so don’t delay. june HOTLIST.... What to do in June
Make your own ice lollies
Remember the magic of making your own lollies as a child? Our Gini used to hunt for used ice cream sticks to make hers (don’t worry, she scrubbed them first), and though there are lots of lolly moulds available now we think the plastic beaker method is the most fun. Fill your beaker with your favourite flavour drink, pop a clean lolly stick in and stand upright in the freezer for a few hours. Pop your lolly out of the beaker (you might need scissors here, so be careful) and voila! A delicious and inexpensive
10
treat. You can even experiment with yoghurt, fizzy pop and, for the grown-ups, something a little stronger. If you want to create a lolly with two flavours, just fill your beaker halfway, freeze it, then add a different flavour and freeze again. To quote a famous toy manufacturer, the possibilities are endless.* *Actually, they’re limited to the amount of edible liquids available, but let’s not be pedantic…
Get on your bike You might have noticed that our cover has a wheely great theme (sorry…) and it’s not just because we’re getting excited about the Tour de France coming through York next year. Get your bike out of the shed if you haven’t already, as this month you’ll definitely need your wheels. Bike to School Week takes place from 10th-14th June, and the Cycle Show will hit the Knavesmire from 22nd-23rd June, bringing a fantastic parade through the city and some excellent entertainment. And that’s not all – the Park and Pedal scheme and the free cycle routes from City of York Council will provide free travel options for cyclists. We’re the spokes-people (sorry) for all you need to know about bike fun this month, so hold onto your handlebars (really sorry. We’ll stop now) and head to our spread on page 30 to find out more.

Venture down the rabbit hole
We’re all a bit in love with the Alice in Wonderland books and films in the office, so we can’t wait for the evening at Beningbrough Hall taking place on 8th June – particularly as we’ll get to play croquet on the lawn with the Queen of Hearts. So, we’ve dedicated our Gardening Guide to Alice – now you can make your yard into a Wonderland. Enjoy! Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk
Rock Against Cancer We’re thoroughly excited about the York Rocks Against Cancer concert that’s coming up at the Grand Opera House on 15th June, not only because it promises to be a fantastic night out, but because it’ll raise money for an excellent local cause. Featuring performances from local bands The Guvnors, York Turnpike Trust and The Supermodels – and Edna’s Hat, a band made up of Emmerdale stars – the event will please fans of rock, pop and R&B alike while raising dosh for York Against Cancer. We suggest you start practising your best air guitar moves now… Visit www.atgtickets.com/ york or call 0844 8713020. Psst! Once more unto
the beach
It happens every year. Usually around the time that woman in the Special K ad puts on a red swimsuit and starts eyeing up waiters. That’s when I realise it’s time to do the same (buy a swimsuit that is, not eye up waiters). I look forward to swimwear shopping with the same optimism that a dog looks forward to a visit to the vet’s. I’ve hated swimsuits since my mum made me wear a hand knitted one when I was eight. And as time goes on, I hate them even more. There is literally nowhere to hide in a swimsuit. All those figure faults you’ve managed to hide in your
12
industrial strength magic underwear are suddenly out on display. And there’s nothing like seeing your winter white limbs in the full length mirror in BHS to take self loathing to a whole new level. Miracles don’t happen I’ll admit swimwear has come a long way since those hand knitted days. You can get all sorts of clever ruching and secret panels and low cut legs and optical illusion stripes that are designed to turn you into Elle Macpherson – or at least stop small children screaming in fright
when you drop your sarong at the poolside. Having been through most of these options, all I can say is – yeah, right. So, after many years of failed swimwear shopping, I’ve devised my own tips which I hope will help save you some misery… • Don’t put your trust in a miracle suit. We’re not talking loaves and fishes miracles here. As far as I can see, the only miracle is that you don’t give yourself an internal injury trying to squeeze them on.
In association with ALI G PIZZA House 11a Tower Street, York Tel: 01904 654654
• On no account buy a skirted swimsuit, unless you’re opting for the ‘Middle Aged Woman In Crisis’ Look. In which case, go the whole hog and team it with a swimming hat covered in rubber flowers. • Yes, black is slimming. It also screams, ‘Look at me, I’m fat and trying to look slim’. • White is another no-no. Get a white swimsuit wet and you’ll be showing off more than your cellulite, let me tell you. • Unlikely as it may seem, a better option is an all over pattern. It distracts the eye, like camouflage. Or, as my husband said unkindly when I showed him my new patterned swimsuit, ‘Well, if it worked for the Seventh Armoured Tank Division…’

All those excess inches have to go somewhere. And a spare tyre around the neck is not a good look.
Donna...
There’s no better barometer on what’s hot and what’s not than our Donna. Here, she shares her thoughts on what’s in or out in her own unique style!
Hot… lendal bridge closure A hot topic, that is, not that I think it’s a great idea (we’ll just have to wait and see on that one). But never mind closing it to cars – when are they going to close it to gigantic parties of tourists who clog it up with their cameras when you’re racing to catch your train?
Not… chuggers Aka, those people in t-shirts who accost you in the street to get you to sign up to a direct debit charity donation. One, I’m not in the habit of giving my bank details to random strangers. And two, I’m certainly not giving them to rude random strangers.

Your life is mostly focused on ‘out with the old, in with the new’ right now. This is natural cycle, and although you won’t always feel in control, you will sense that new and better times are coming. Indeed, you might say they are long overdue, but you have not really created any space in your life for anything ‘new’. The 17th is a most auspicious date for receiving good news and getting a green light on new schemes and ideas, both in business and the home. The 20th may see you spending more money than usual on a specific project. Travel aspects linked to reunions become very relevant around the 24th/25th. Concern for the younger people may be understandable, but youngsters will absolutely demand their God-given right to make their own mistakes! Arguments with utility companies should be pursued with determination.

Now is a good time for buying and selling, but exercise caution where long term plans and investments are concerned. When times are hard, bank from the stash in your sock – in other words, don’t trust the high street, avoid stocks and shares like the plague, and don’t let other people know what (or how much) you’ve got!
It’s time for major clear outs and tidy ups around your house, your workplace and your mind. You need to think and act clearly to make any major progress. This means dealing with various problems and issues one at a time rather than trying to put everything right all at once.
Now is a hedonistic period in which business and pleasure combine nicely and you’ll find yourself getting most (although not entirely all) of what you’re looking for out of life. Enjoy it while you can because times like these do not last forever. Work at bringing some joy into someone else’s life, for this brings joy into your own.
You face the responsibility of resolving awkward situations in problematic relationships. Keeping things light and casual can alleviate tense scenarios. This is hindered by someone who doesn’t want ‘light and casual’, but something heavy and committed. As a last resort, you can always turn tail and run!.

(23rd September - 22nd October)
(23rd October - 21st November) Both travel aspects and the concept of new things being born are high in your chart. Go with the flow and have a little more faith in your powers of instinct. Romantic energies are favourable for finding a new relationship or greater depth of meaning in an existing union.
Sagittarius
(22nd November - 21st December) Responsibilities may clash with personal desires at this time. The easy pathway is to do what you feel is right, while the right pathway is to do what you want to do! Concern for other people’s welfare may be justified, but not to the extent of altering your entire lifestyle to fit in with their needs.
Capricorn
(22nd December - 19th January) Some minor financial gains take some of the pressure off your monthly budget, but don’t take this for granted, because it is capable of cutting both ways. Someone close to you probably feels quite guilty about not being as supportive as you need them to be, but the truth is, they’re doing their best.
Aquarius
(20th January - 18th February) Ambitious Aquarians will get the best out of the next few weeks, not only in the arena of jobs and careers, but also in relationships. Ladies excel at networking and mixing business
with pleasure, but gentlemen will find it more constructive to work on solitary projects.

Scorpio
Pisces
(19th February - 20th March) The concept of movement is very strong in your stars, but note that while this could be physical movement in the sense of holidays, it could also indicate a changing of opinions and priorities. Sadly, this may be time to move away from old friendships and associations that are past their sell by date.
Aries
(21st March - 19th April) You may be surprised when your nearest and dearest makes a major U-turn in upcoming plans. This means that your own plans must change – and probably for the better, if it makes something you really want come one step closer. This is a time to actually use some of your talents and investments.
TAURUS
(20th April- 20th May) Other people might find it hard to understand you, either because they can’t, or they won’t! Proceed with a degree of independence but also with a degree of caution. Build carefully, and remember that while Rome wasn’t built in a day, even now there are parts of it that are still standing.

Royal jubilee One particularly loyal usherette recently celebrated 40 years’ service at York Theatre Royal. Rita Ridgeon started working in the theatre’s catering department in 1973 before being promoted to Catering Manager and eventually moving into ushering in 1991. The move was only intended as temporary to see if she liked it, but trooper Rita kept the position for a further 22 years. Rita’s years of service have given her some very memorable experiences, including being pulled onstage by pantomime dame Berwick Kaler and being forced to declare: “I believe in fairies.” Rita’s hard work has not gone unnoticed, and she was given the honour of having a rowing boat named after her for the production of Gerald Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals. Asked what was so great about her job, Rita says that she loves meeting people. “I’ve been here so long that taking the theatre away from me would be like taking my arm off. As long as I’m able bodied and can do the job, I want to be part of it,” says Rita. That’s dedication!

Have a heart
A student has lent his artistic talents to participants in this year’s Heart of York charity bike ride. Joe Farmer, a Product Design student at York St John University, won the British Heart Foundation competition to design a t-shirt to be worn by riders taking part in the race later this year. The event will take cyclists aged 14 and up on a 22 or 40-mile route through the North Yorkshire countryside on 1st September. Joe will also have the honour of leading the bike ride, wearing a Tour de France-inspired yellow version of his t-shirt, alongside two friends. Well done Joe! n To register for the race, visit www.bhf.org.uk/heartofyorkbikeride
Moving on up The folks at York St John certainly do have a lot to shout about this month. Not only does the university produce award-winning t-shirt designers, it’s also skyrocketed in a recent student survey. York St John has risen from 58th to 9th place in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, making it the first university built after 1992 to make the top ten. The survey took into account the views of 12,000 undergraduate students, who voted on categories such as tuition, social life and library services. n Visit www.yorksj.ac.uk

From soap to stage We chat to Tony Audenshaw, AKA Bob Hope from Emmerdale, about running marathons, life in the Dales and his upcoming role as Compere at the York Rocks Against Cancer concert. You’ll probably know him as Bob – the cheeky joker from the Dales – but on 15th June, Tony Audenshaw will play himself when compering the York Rocks Against Cancer concert at the Grand Opera House. The event will raise funds for York Against Cancer, a local charity that helps people who have been affected by the disease, and will feature some of Tony’s fellow cast members from Emmerdale as well as some top local bands.
Treading the boards Tony will feel right at home on stage, having had a pretty varied performing career. He’s entertained at theme parks and in schools, and he even belts out a tune as lead singer of local band White Van Man. Nowadays, though, Tony is more often spotted on screen, having become an integral cast member on Emmerdale since joining in 2000. So, is Tony like Bob in real life? “The writers get to know you, so they
22
do make your characters similar sometimes,” says Tony. “I’m a bit of a joker like Bob, and I’m pretty positive, so I think that they’ve
written that into the character a bit. I’m nowhere near as nice or as funny as him though!” Tony jokes, adding he doesn’t often get
recognised in the street. “I don’t have Bob’s ludicrous hair style in real life, so people don’t always twig!”
Tony says that the cast have a great time on set. “One particular time that stands out was when myself, Stan Richards (who played Seth) and James Hooton (who plays Sam Dingle) were in the Woolpack, having an in-depth discussion about Seth’s male chicken. Obviously we were using a different word to describe it, and we could barely speak for laughing.” Tony says that the on-screen chemistry is fantastic, but sometimes the actors get a bit carried away. “Usually I can control the giggles, but when you can’t it’s both the best and the worst feeling in the world. The crew don’t find it funny because they just want to do their job and go home, so you get these stern faces looking at you which sometimes just makes it worse. Then the director comes on and tells us off, and that fans the flames to make it worse still…
Running man Tony’s no stranger to fundraising – though he insists he “doesn’t do very much”, we think that running a marathon pretty much every year since 1996 is no mean feat. “I fundraise for leukaemia lymphoma research through my marathons,” says Tony. “The first marathon I

did was particularly hard, but it’s all about persevering and building up your mileage. Once a week you have to go so far that you make yourself feel sick,” He adds. Tony admits that it’s “a bit grim,” but he promises the training gets easier. “After the first one I said never again, but it’s definitely addictive.” Tony also contributes weekly to the Marathon Talk Podcast. “I offer advice and let people know what I’ve been up to.” And we reckon Tony’s advice is worth listening to – his personal best is three hours for a marathon. “I’m not really focused on speed any more,” Tony admits. “It’s hard to get really fit when you’re drinking beer and eating crisps, and I don’t want to give those up again really!” We think you’ve earned it, Tony. Tony ends our chat by saying quite humbly how pleased he is to be part of the Emmerdale cast. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet some great people, make a difference for charities and be seen as a celebrity, which is a rather strange thing.” The York Rocks Against Cancer concert will take place at the Grand Opera House on 15th June from 7.30pm. Arthouse cinema City Screen will re-open this month after a major refurbishment project. Work began on the cinema in May with the architectural talents of Panter Hudspith, who won a Civic Trust Award in 2001. The £300,000 investment has seen the cinema taking on the style of the Yorkshire Herald printworks, with new seats installed in every screen and a newly designed Riverside Café Bar.

The works were part of a larger project to upgrade the Picturehouse company’s cinemas nationwide. Time for chocolate
Students from York College’s Performing Arts department auditioned in their hundreds recently for the upcoming local play Blood and Chocolate, taking place in October. The performance will take viewers around the streets of York, telling the story of York’s chocolate factories during the Great War. But there’s no need to wait until October; we can get a taster of the event this month at a play by the Blood and Chocolate project from 25th-29th June. Clocking In: Life in the Chocolate City will take place from 7-8pm and 8.30-9.30pm each night at the York Cocoa House, taking visitors through York’s chocolate factories and revealing the hidden stories of York’s chocolate past. The evenings will take chocoholics and historians alike through the factory process, from the production line to the boardroom. Visitors will be greeted with a complimentary hot chocolate, so indulge your sweet tooth! n Call 635755.

Who’s your hero? As part of a new series, we look at who inspires some of our business gurus. Next up, Alison Birkinshaw, Principal of York College. In choosing a business hero I wanted to recognise the power of education in creating opportunities for individuals and the role education plays in supporting someone to build their own business from scratch. Born and raised in Yorkshire, Chef James Martin left school with few qualifications, having struggled with dyslexia. With support through college education and in particular learning on the job, he achieved success. James now owns a multi-million pound restaurant and retail business as well being as an author and TV presenter. He’s an excellent example of someone who embarked on a vocational course and was encouraged to use his enterprise skills. This is an ideal that we at York College instil in all our students, and it’s great when they return to us and we can see that this is starting to happen. n Visit www.yorkcollege.ac.uk or call 770400.

Five minutes with…
A force to be reckoned with York’s oldest charity The Wilberforce Trust has recently taken on a new Chief Executive. We grab five minutes with Philippa Crowther as she details how things are looking bright for the sight-loss charity. doing something worthwhile for the community.”
“Our tenants are the most important thing to us,” explains Philippa while describing her new role within the charity. “It’s my job to make sure they are all supported, safe and – more importantly – happy.” With the charity offering accommodation services for people with visual impairment in York and Tadcaster, as well as the charity offering independent living services in people’s homes, it seems Phillippa will be kept very busy. Philippa explains that The Wilberforce Trust began life as The Yorkshire School for the Blind in King's Manor in 1843. It then became the Home for the Blind and then later the Wilberforce Trust. “I’m very happy to be here,” she says. “The Wilberforce Trust is an amazing place, staffed by some amazing people. We’ve been operating for more than 150 years now, with the Trust evolving over the decades to meet the varying challenges that every charity faces – especially in today’s financial climate.”
28
But The Wilberforce Trust doesn’t just offer accommodation to people with sight problems. “There is so much more that the Trust does,” says Philippa, “including services that are open to everyone. Our Living and Learning Zone, a purpose-built community facility, is like a mini college. There are music nights, family support groups, art classes and a variety of courses staffed by experienced tutors. We even offer eye tests!”
The sharpest tool in the box The Trust’s focus is to support their visually impaired tenants to maximise their independence as much as possible. What kind of experience is Philippa bringing the role? “I’ve worked in health care provision for
27 years, in community services, hospitals and as Group Operations Director at Nuffield Health. I’ve a toolbox of skills from various positions, but I’ve always wanted to give something back. This role is the best of both worlds for me; a great career move with plenty to get my teeth stuck into, while
So what does the future hold for The Wilberforce Trust? “We’re planning for the future all the time. Because we are a charity that helps accommodate people of all ages, we need to be sensitive to how different age groups differ. But we have solid foundations to work from and I’m certain that the Trust will be around for at least another 150 years.” n Visit www.wilberforcetrust.org.uk

He tells us about the hottest news in the world of sport in words we can understand, and makes it funny too! Thank you, Dan Tait – here is his column… Bite-sized
Farewell Fergie
I am writing this column in the closing stages of the football season. York City are officially safe from relegation, and Premier League players are now safe from the jaws of Luis Suarez (well, for ten games at least). Of course people were going to make the joke that Suarez just wanted to ‘taste’ Champions League success when he sunk those big nashers into Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, yet some went the whole hog (no pun intended) and designed a specific Suarez menu, featuring a starter of Julio Caesar salad, a main course of Shaun Wright fillets and dessert of juicy Jaaskelainen...
Retirement seems to be the big thing at the minute, with Sir Alex Ferguson bowing out of Manchester United after 27 years. At 71, you can’t really argue with his decision, and from a personal point of view I feel now at least everyone else has a chance (though they reckon with all the time added on, Alex Ferguson won’t actually retire until October). Of course the news spread across social media like wildfire and some Americans got confused – one person responded that the Black Eyed Peas would never be the same again! An all-time great he may be, but I still remember Tony Barass heading the third at Old Trafford during York City’s 3-0 win in 1995 like it was yesterday. No amount of Fergie time could stop Alan Little’s barmy army conquering the Red Devils that night.
Snooker loopy Luis Suarez is one of those players who gets column inches just by existing, much like Jose Mourinho who may just be heading back to these shores. I noticed recently Ronnie O’Sullivan complained that snooker doesn’t have these sorts of characters, and wished that it there were people like Eric Cantona in the sport. Can you just imagine that? The Frenchman missing the black for a 147 and then kung fu kicking a pensioner in the crowd? To be fair I think Ronnie meant snooker needs more entertainers, which is ironic given he is snooker’s biggest draw yet seems to toy with retirement more than Frank Sinatra.

with DAN TAIT
Off the bat In my last column I was bemoaning the poor start to the new cricket season Yorkshire had endured. I am happy to report the boys have since adjusted to life back in the top flight much better, with some stunning performances and results. Back-toback victories against Durham and then Derbyshire where Joe Root (236) and Johnny Bairstow (186) scored memorable innings have got the team back on track. As ever in cricket, when you have local talent playing at the top of their game they get picked for their country, but hopefully Yorkshire will adjust well as the inevitable happens when Root, Bairstow and Bresnan team up with England for the impending test series. You can see how the team get on without them on 5th June when Yorkshire take on Nottinghamshire at Scarborough for a four day county championship fixture, before they line up back at Headingley on 21st June against Surrey.
LOCAL SPORT REPORT
Local sports success Here at Your Local Link we are always happy to hear success stories of local sports clubs, and this month we’d like to congratulate Wheldrake Junior Football Club who run teams of youngsters between the ages of seven and 16. The club based at Broad Highway in Wheldrake has seen victory on the pitch across all age groups with the under 10s, under 12s and under 16s all coming top of their respective leagues. The under 12s side, pictured, have now gained promotion to the top tier, which will begin in September. Club chairman and under 12s manager Richard Dickinson told us that it was no mean feat. “The Selby league is tough – teams have much bigger catchment areas – but our boys overcame adversity with talent and determination to succeed.” Not only do Wheldrake JFC have a winning mentality on the pitch, they were also awarded the 2012 East Riding County FA Charter Standard Club of the Year. This award is the result of a great deal of hard work from the combined efforts of managers, coaching staff and parents who all muck in to keep the club maintaining their many successes. The plaudits just kept coming for the club next season, as the current under 12s also hold a FA Respect Fair Play Award. n Anyone interested in joining the club should visit www.wjfc.co.uk

Mirror, signal…erm? How long ago was your driving test? According to research carried out by the AA, an estimated 17 million motorists think that if they were to be tested again they would fail. It seems that many drivers admit to having at least one area of driving that they have no confidence with, with parallel parking being voted the most difficult manoeuvre in our part of the country. The poll also revealed that around 250,000 motorists weren’t sure what the national speed limit was. Oh dear – we think we might start hang gliding to work.
Aarghh! It’s your parent’s anniversary and you’ve forgotten! Better get in touch with them. Question is do you call, text, email, tweet, Facebook them, pin something pretty on their Pinterest board or challenge them to beat your Angry Birds score? It’s true there are lots of ways to communicate these days, and thanks to those little slabs of glass and silicon in our pockets we can do it anywhere. But not in the car! A study published in the Traffic Injury Prevention journal states that texting
The car fit for a King (to be) What gadgets does your motor possess? Sat nav? MP3 player? Cup holder? We bet you think you’re pretty high-tech boasting all those extras, but how about a poisonous gas detector? That’s exactly what a new BMW comes equipped with, and it’s set to ferry Prince Charles and Camilla around. Not only can the car sniff out bad gas (tee hee) it is also bullet proof, has its own oxygen supply and the engine can be started via a remote, in case a bomb has been fitted to explode when the ignition starts. All this, for only £300,000. Charles should be able to afford that though – his mum is on all the money.

Think yourselves lucky If you get pretty annoyed at the morning drive through the city, or at the stop-start slog of the school run, spare a thought for our cultural brethren. Oxford; city of learning and spires (but not the most desirable place in the UK to live – that’s still us according to search engine Bing), has recently topped a list of the most congested non-motorway traffic in the country, carried out by a GPS tracking company. It seems that during the morning rush hour Oxford, along with Birmingham and many parts
of London, comes to a standstill with clogged roads, hooting horns and foppish students throwing their long scarves over their shoulders and tutting. If we were them, we’d quit and enrol in one of York’s fine universities. At least they’d get to lectures on time. Psst! Find out about the Park and Pedal scheme, which lets you dodge the traffic by cycling part of the way to work, on page 33.
maintenance Tips Long love – long life. Here are some tips on prolonging the life of your motor and keeping repairs at bay. • The honeymoon period. In the first few months of ownership it is important to be careful with your new pride and joy. Try to keep the speed under 55mph and always accelerate gently. • Bone idle. Never allow your car to be idle for too long. Sitting on the drive for extended periods can affect the car’s oil pressure, leading to further damage in the future.

Hair and Beauty Q&A
Meet our newest beauty expert, Nikki Winterburn from Mirror Mirror! She’ll be on hand every month to answer your hair and beauty questions. This month, she tackles how to get gorgeous summer hair.

I want a change for the summer months – what sort of hairstyle should I go for? Anything goes! Long, short and mid-length styles are all en vogue at the moment. The key to making your hair look on trend and beach ready is to keep it tousled and messy for the ultimate in boho chic. Accessorising your hair is a great idea too – why not add a few feathers to stand out from the crowd?
What is the best leave-in conditioner to use? All the ones I’ve tried leave my hair feeling lank and heavy! Uniq One is amazing. It contains silk as its main ingredient which makes your hair feel really smooth, and is applied to wet hair right to the cuticle but leaves it feeling light. It provides great volume too. The best part is that it only costs £12! We swear by it at Mirror Mirror!

T-Birds The Great Gatsby film has taken the world of fashion by storm – we’re all mad for 1920s style at the moment. A flapper dress might be a bit much for the office, though, so we’re following the trend with T-Bar shoes instead. If the sun decides to put his hat on they’ll keep our feet cool, while looking stylish – and there are styles available with a range of heel heights, so whether you’re a fan of flats, kittens or skyscrapers, there’ll be a shoe for you. We love these dainty T-Bar flat shoes from Miss Selfridge. Swoon. £25, Miss Selfridge, Coppergate (in TopShop) or Monks Cross, www.missselfridge.com
Hot... Time for tea Summertime equals pretty dresses in our eyes, and we reckon there’s no prettier style than the tea dress. It’s flattering on most shapes, and there’s a wonderful array of prints to choose from, too. Plus, tea dresses are really versatile: you can dress them up with heels and accessories for a night out, or wear them with flats for a cute daytime look. What’s not to love? We adore this lace number from New Look.

Sew it yourself The Great British Sewing Bee may have left our TV screens, but its legacy lives on in the Your Local Link office. We’ve been trying to get to grips with our sewing machines, and have nearly gone cross-eyed from threading needles. We’ve got a way to go yet – Nic ended up getting the French seams on her skirt the wrong way around and having to unpick the lot – but it is fun and really worthwhile. We can’t wait for September to roll around so that we can enrol on a sewing course at York College and really get to grips with making our own clothes. See you there!

Screw up the scrunchie According to some fashion magazines which will remain nameless, scrunchies are ‘in’*. This fact fills us with horror. You may have erased scrunchies from your memory due to the trauma of them, so let us explain. Scrunchies are those hideous bobble type things that don’t work properly, so when you try to use one to tie up your hair half of it ends up around your face. They’re basically a loose bobble with too much material. Ahh, you remember now. Shuddering? Yep, so did we. Please don’t take us back to the 1980s, fashion world – not like this. *We should point out that the magazine in question was as horrified as we were by The Return of the Scrunchie. Which appropriately sounds like a horror film.
Peeping beauty Haircuts that cover your eyes – why? They’re impractical to the point of being downright dangerous and make you look a bit pretentious, really. When a sweeping fringe becomes a curtain in front of your face, go to your hairdresser and get it sorted, pronto.
White Glo Traveller’s Pack I went away for the weekend recently and this was a welcome addition to my toiletries bag. I loved that I could keep my toothbrush and paste together in one handy bag. The toothpaste leaves a lovely fresh mouth feeling, even my daughter Brooke commented on my minty breath! It really does have a nice taste. I also received a comment after using it for a few days that I had lovely white teeth. There is now a sticker on my toothpaste with a ‘Keep Off’ sign – no way am I sharing! n RRP: £2.29 Morrisons, Foss Island Me Tarzan, you Jane. We cheaters instant spray tan in a can After my last fake tan faux pas (triangular brown tea stains. Everywhere.) I was a little apprehensive to try out another spray tan, but there was no need for nerves! The first thing I noticed is that it smells absolutely great – think cocktails on the beach with lots of coconut and suncream (though please be aware it doesn’t provide SPF protection!). When applied the product itself came out fairly dark, which was handy because I could see exactly where it was going. The company recommend that you don’t actually need to rub the product in, but having visions of more triangular patches I hastily helped the colour to distribute evenly with a bit of a rub. Which worked! Hallelujah! It smells great, makes my skin feel soft and moisturised, and I’ve now got a healthy, even, golden glow. Success! n £6.99 Superdrug, Market Street or Goodramgate www.superdrug.com

Anyone for Thought you knew everything about Wimbledon? The tennis season is kicking off on 24th June, and we’ve rounded up some fun facts about the event that are sure to impress down the pub. Andre Agassi refused to play between 1988 and 1990 because of the ‘stuffy’ dress code.
Each year spectators consume 28,000kg of strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream – that’s a lot of calories!
200 centre court seats were destroyed in World War II, and took a whopping nine years to restore.
Wooden rackets have not been used since 1987. Like many things, the bulky items were better off left in the 1980s.
White balls were replaced by yellow ones in 1986 after umpires decided they were ‘too difficult’ to see.
The youngest player to ever win was Austrian Mita Klima, who was 13 years old in 1907.
Wimbledon always starts on the sixth Monday before the first Monday of August. We couldn’t figure it out either!
The first event took place in 1877 as a men’s singles. Women’s singles didn’t begin until seven years later.
Venus Williams showed off her girl power by successfully campaigning to make male and female winners’ prize money equal in 2007.

Getting to the point You’ll have probably heard us waxing lyrical about how acupuncture can help a wide range of problems from migranes to lower back pain, so you won’t be surprised to learn that we’re thrilled the Northern College of Acupuncture teaching clinic will be open on Saturdays from July. Richard Blackwell, Principal of the college, says that one of the reasons for the decision to open on Saturdays is due to a rise in student numbers. “The Saturday opening will help our students with their practice in clinic, and it’s also a great opportunity for people who find weekday appointments difficult,” says Richard. If you’d like to know more about whether acupuncture can help you, the practitioners will be happy to talk to you in confidence either in person or over the telephone. n Visit www.chinese-medicne.co.uk or call 343305.

Why I give blood
Our very own Katie Thompson explains why she gives away the red stuff… Quite honestly, before I began giving blood, the idea of a needle in my arm was about as appealing as a weeklong hangover. It wasn’t until I was 17 and had a dream about it that I thought I would give it a go. When I turned up, all the nurses were nice as pie – not the bloodsucking zombies I had feared – and the pain was nothing more than a scratch. I’m O negative, which apparently makes me super special (they tell me…) because only seven per cent of UK residents have that type, but it can be given to all blood groups if a patient’s type isn’t immediately known. As such I often get emails asking me to donate, but I’m happy to, because it’s an hour of my time that could save somebody’s life. And of course, there are the free biscuits!

Go depot! Ah, summer… at last it’s here! Right, time to relegate all those winter woollies, jumpers, shoes and thermal underwear. But what to do with it all? Sure, you could bury them in the garden and hope that a scarf tree grows by next September – or you could wake up to yourself and get some cash while helping people in need. The Clothes Depot on the A59 accepts bags of unwanted clean clothes and will actually pay you for them – 50p per kilogram, in fact. The clothes then go to places like Africa and Eastern Europe to be put to good use, while you can spend the your new dosh on a fancy pair of shorts or a teeny weeny bikini. You are legends.
save the day Set the date for the big day? Now all you need to do is tell all your friends and family. Here are top tips on making (and timing) the perfect save the date and invitation cards. • Save the date invitations are typically sent out eight to ten months prior to the wedding. This is so people can arrange accommodation, transport, child care if required, and the all-important outfit. • They should be the first introduction for your guests to the theme and colours of the wedding and, if you are making them yourself, reflect the level of care and detail being put into the day. • Invitations should usually be sent around six to eight weeks before, and contain all the information the guests will need to get to the venue. Including an order of the day and menu choices are also very helpful, as well as a link to a wedding website if you have one. • Make sure there is an easy means of RSVP-ing, be it an email address or a postal address. If postal, include an RSVP slip and a stamped addressed envelope. Because you’re nice like that.

Lean, mean,
cleaning machine
That’s you, that is. Or it will be if you follow the Betta Living’s Clean Yourself Lean Exercise Guide. Apparently we Britons spend eight hours each week cleaning our homes – time and effort that could be channelled into losing weight and staying trim. Betta Living has devised a series of exercises based upon the average kind of chores you perform while cleaning, including The Hoover Lunge, Window Wiping Squats and the Scrub Up Press Up, which involves scrubbing the bathroom floor while doing a press up. It all seems to
make sense, although when Howard had a go in the office, he got into a bit of tangle. n Visit www.bettaliving.co.uk

Heavenly skin If something is good enough for Nicky Hambleton-Jones, presenter of TV’s Ten Years Younger, then it’s good enough for us. You’ll remember us telling you last month about the new hair removal lasering service from Marcelle at Heavenly Nails & Beauty, and it seems that the machine that she uses has got the stamp of approval from Nicky herself. “It’s good for removing hair, and can be used for small areas on the face or larger areas like the back and shoulders,” says Nicky. “The beauty is that this is a quick and simple treatment with very little discomfort and the results are long lasting, too.” So, how does it work? The machine uses IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, offering virtually pain-free, quick and long lasting results. It’s suitable for all areas, and isn’t limited to hair removal – which Marcelle says has had even more dramatic results than she expected. The Pulsar machine can treat a range of skin conditions, as such as acne, thread veins and rosacea. Marcelle will be welcoming people into her home on the first Monday and Tuesday of every month to help legs across York become fuzz-free – places fill up fast, so book in while you can!
Great offers! Of course, Marcelle will still be available to come to your home to preen you to perfection, providing a range of treatments including tanning, waxing, facials and reflexology to get you set for summer. As the weather warms up it’s time to get those tootsies out, and luckily Marcelle is offering Rock Chick toes for £15, or a manicure and pedicure combo for £30. Lush!

Sizzle safely
A fond farewell
The weather in Britain may be as fickle as Katie Price’s marriages, but there’s no excuse not to protect yourself when things hot up. Did you know you could still become sunburnt on a cloudy day? Us neither. Here are our tips to keep you safe in the sun. Timing is everything The sun’s UV rays are at their highest between 10am and 4pm, so avoid scheduling outdoor activities between these hours. If you do need to venture out at that time, make the most of the shade. Slap on the right stuff Your suncream should be high factor – remember the formula. If your skin burns in ten minutes, then SPF 30 will keep you protected for 300. Check to make sure it protects from both UVA and UVB rays, and make sure it’s waterproof if you plan to go swimming. Apply generously about 20 minutes before going outside and reapply regularly. Dress for the occasion Light, layered clothing works best in the sun, providing around SPF 5. Sun hats should have a three-inch brim all the way around to protect ears and eyes. Shades aren’t just there to make you look cool either – choose sunglasses with UV protection to prevent cataracts. Drink up In hot weather it’s best to drink water frequently in moderate amounts. Avoid sugary drinks if you can, and consider electrolyte-rich sports drinks if you’re planning on heavy exercise.

Be skin cancer aware this summer
Be skin cancer aware this summer – the Habia Skills Academy is asking everyone to remember ABCDE as part of their Skin Cancer Awareness campaign. Remember to go to the doctor if you notice any of the following: Asymmetry. Normal moles or freckles are completely symmetrical.
Border. A mole or spot with blurry and/or jagged edges.
Diameter If it is larger than ¼ inch or 6mm, it needs to be examined by a doctor.
Colour. A mole that is more than one hue.
Elevation. Elevation means the mole is raised above the surface and has an uneven surface.

Fortunately there is a friend of the mag who can help calm us all down, and she’ll be able to do the same for you. Last year a total of 10.8 million working days were lost due to work related stress; a figure Angie Doig-Thorne is helping to reduce.

PET TALK in association with MINSTER VETS
Q. My cat keeps getting fleas,
more visible on your pet and in the home.
should I keep him indoors all the time?
It may take several months to remove the flea infestation from your home so continue to regularly administer flea preparations, and do so all year round.
Although keeping your cat indoors may reduce the chance of him getting more fleas, it won’t necessarily eradicate fleas in the house. Treatment every four weeks of a veterinary prescribed flea preparation will eventually eradicate the infestation. There is no product out on the market that provides a complete barrier against fleas. The fleas you see are only five per cent of the problem, unfortunately the other 95% is hidden in the home. Regular washing of your pet’s bedding above 60˚C will kill flea eggs, larvae and pupae and regular hoovering will help remove some of this too. Even if you have laminate flooring the eggs will drop into the spaces between the floorboards, so it’s still as important to hoover laminate flooring as carpet. You may need a household insecticidal spray from your veterinary practice which will kill the eggs and larvae in your home. Also, ensure that you move furniture when you are cleaning as fleas like shady areas. Some products may cause hyper-excitability which cause fleas to become
Q. My three-year-old male dog is spraying in the house, is there a reason for this? Is there anything I can do to prevent it? Urine marking is a normal behaviour for male and female dogs, we just need to modify this behaviour in such a way as to encourage behaviour that is acceptable to owners.
as it can make the problem worse, and can cause the dog to become fearful of you, which could lead to other issues. Praise your dog for elimination in the appropriate place and ignore elimination that happens inside in the same way as you would for a puppy. Avoid using strong smelling cleaning products on the area. Use whichever product you would use in your washing machine to clean the area, as it is less likely to make him re-mark the spot. Test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first.
I would advise that you seek veterinary attention first to eliminate medical issues that can cause frequent urination. If your dog hasn’t been castrated, your vet may advise that this be done, as dogs that are neutered are less likely to mark their territory. Additionally, we need to consider any changes happening in the household at the time i.e. new furniture, the arrival of a baby, the introduction of another animal or other causes of anxiety which a vet could discuss with you. Don’t punish your dog for this behaviour

Have a home? These cutie-pies need one. Magnum Handsome Magnum would make the perfect companion as a lone pet for families with older children. This domestic short hair is quite shy at first, so now he is looking for an understanding and caring home in which he can settle. Berwick Beautiful Berwick is no pantomime dame but will certainly make a loving companion to any family. This ginger and white moggy can live with owners of all ages and other pets, and may be a little shy at times but has a kind and sweet nature. n If you’re interested in finding out more about these adorable moggies, or any of the cats at York Cats Protection, call 760356.
Bilbo Ladies’ man Bilbo needs a lot of love to come out of his shell, but when he does he has a great personality. Bilbo would be best suited for a household with teenagers aged 16 and up or all adults, and owners would benefit from experience with large breed dogs. Henry Lively Henry is a beautiful Beagle cross-breed who came to the RSPCA after his owners began working longer hours. Henry is still quite young and so would benefit from the training of a loving family.

Dad pit
Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. As a boy he assumed he would grow up to be better than everyone else. But at 31 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.
The remake of Godzilla was both weird and frightening.
This month I finally had my baby. Well, my wife had the baby – I don’t have the relevant parts despite what you may have read on the back of a few toilet doors. I shall spare you the details of the birth, emphasising instead that all involved are healthy and happy. We spent our babymoon with my wife mostly in bed with our new little boy while I was out in the garden building our daughter her new sand pit. It was a present from her little brother – who, it appears, already has his own bank and Amazon accounts. I’m considering asking him for a loan. Anyway, you might think this column
52
would be about being a daddy to two children for the first time and all the wonderfully adorable things they do. It isn’t. It’s about sand pits. Winter is (not) coming While the wife has been occupied by a milk-hungry babe, I’ve been keeping child number one entertained by showing her my mad sand castle skills. First I built a replica of Winterfell from Game of Thrones. My daughter smashed it down. I then carefully moulded a model of Sauron’s tower from Lord of the Rings. Unimpressed, she kicked that down as well. So I buried her.
It started as a joke, as I piled the sand on top of her. Then she realised she couldn’t move and started to complain, threatening to tell Mama. Meanwhile I completed my own sandy version of Camelot, completely undisturbed. It had a drawbridge and everything. It was a great afternoon and definitely the highlight of the past few weeks. A helping sand Hopefully it will be a nice summer with plenty of opportunity to get outside. That way my daughter can spend as much time in the sand pit as possible. It shall become her third
parent and teach her all she needs to know (should she be planning a career as an architect of castles. Brown, gritty castles). So if you are looking for something to keep you own children amused this summer I heartily recommend getting them a sand pit. If you are concerned about how to fill it remember that Scarborough beach is just a 45 minute drive away and most family car boots can support several tonnes of weight.* *No, there’s no disclaimer. You should actually go and do this.

And another thing…
Disillusionment. Yay!
Apart from wife who provided me with a son and heir, this month I have been mostly thankful to Henry VIII. Thanks to Henry, and his
disillusionment of the monasteries, I’ve been able to take my toddler daughter to the Museum Gardens and explore the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. It has become a firm favourite, incredibly outranking Rowntree’s Park in daughter desirability for a place to play. Instead of going on the swings and slides, she climbs the crumbling stones of the cathedral and hops over medieval stone coffins. Some may find this slightly morbid, but as long as she’s happy she could use the Wailing Wall as a chalk board for all I care.
Playground, revisited
Duck, duck, goose. Sit in a circle with some friends. One person is nominated as ‘on’ and must walk around the outside of the circle, tapping the players on the head while declaring them a ‘duck’. They move around the circle, continuing to say “duck,” until they pat a player on the head and call them “goose”. At which point the ‘goose’ must leap up from the circle and attempt to catch the ‘on’ person, who sets off around the circle. If that person manages to make all the way around to the now empty spot in the circle, they sit and the ‘goose’ must take their place as ‘on’. If the ‘goose’ catches the other person, they may sit back down and the game resumes as before.

York Older People’s Assembly has launched the ninth annual York 50+ Festival and the organisers are looking for volunteers to take part. The festival will take place from 28th September-6th October, celebrating older age and working to ‘accentuate the positive’ of being over 50. The team are now looking for mature volunteers to come forward with any ideas for events and stalls, embracing creativity, diversity and social inclusion from groups and individuals. Last year’s event was a roaring success with 110 events enjoyed by more than 5,400 participants, and the organisers want to offer the same enjoyment this year for York residents across the age range. The deadline for entering an event is 20th July. n Visit www.yorkassembly.org.uk/festival or call 488870.

The Island helps young people who are experiencing a difficult transition in their lives by linking them with a volunteer mentor, who will meet with them on a weekly basis to offer support and increase the young person’s self esteem and confidence. n If you would be interested in raising funds for the ‘friends of’ group or becoming a mentor, call Nigel or Jenni on 628449.

Cimbiotic
relationship We chat to musical prodigy Ed Cotton about how receiving guitar tutelage from Cimbio Music was a real boost for him. “I started lessons at Cimbio Music when I was 12,” explains Ed, now 15 and fast becoming a mainstay of the York busking scene. “I’d had guitar lessons at school, but I really didn’t enjoy it very much. I asked in a music store for any guitar tutors and they recommended Ivor Fox of Cimbio Music. I’m certainly glad that they did.” It seems that Ivor is not your average guitar teacher. “He’s certainly an eccentric character. Ivor is friendly and outgoing. I really enjoyed my lessons with him.” For two years every Sunday Ed met Ivor at his house, to learn, play and jam together in a relaxed environment. What Ed learnt has been invaluable for his chosen career path. “I want to work in music, there’s no doubt about that. Ivor has helped develop my confidence – something that is really important if you want to play live on the streets of York.”
Paddling for heroes
Every weekend Ed ventures out into York and finds himself a spot to perform – you’ve probably seen (and heard) him several times already. “Busking in York is a lovely thing to do. The other performers are all really friendly and it’s nice to be able to play to an audience – and make a bit of cash as well!” So does Ed Recommend Cimbio Music to other budding rock stars? “I certainly do. I think it helped me that I already had a bit of musical knowledge before starting lessons – it meant Ivor and I could concentrate on having fun and playing. But he can teach anyone, regardless of experience. If you are really committed to playing the guitar, Ivor is your man.” n Call 627868.

They hope to raise enough to sponsor a room in a new personal recovery unit at Catterick. Drop in, get informed
Time to talk To mark National Carers Week, an awareness campaign that raises the profile of carers from 10th-16th June, we look at the importance of preparing for care provision. It’s a conversation that we might want to put off, but discussing how we’re going to provide care for our parents when they’re elderly is important and doesn’t have to be as difficult as we might imagine. Ann-Marie Roche from Home Instead says that the 40-70 rule is a good one to follow. “When most people reach the age of 40 their parents are around 70,” explains Ann-Marie, “which is a good time to start talking about what your parents might need or want in the future in terms of care. It’s best to talk before any issues might set in.” The following tips from the folks at Home Instead will help to get conversation flowing. • Ask for your parents’ opinion and what they think would be a good solution. • Address any issues sooner rather than later. For
58
instance if you notice that your parent is starting to have problems seeing when driving at night time, speak to them about it before a problem arises. • Remember that you’re talking to an adult. Avoid patronising speech as this can seem disrespectful and make your parents feel defensive. Think about how you would want your children to speak to you about it in the same situation. • Try to find solutions that will enable your parents to remain independent for as long as possible. • Above all, ask for help. There are many care providers who can talk to you and your loved ones about the different options that are available. See Ann-Marie’s column on how to go about choosing the right care provider on page 57.
If you have questions relating to your housing choices in later life, City of York Council will have the answer. The council has recently announced that they are now offering even more drop-in sessions for older residents, their carers and family members. There will be two such sessions in June, the first on 7th at Alex Lyon House, 5th Avenue, Tang Hall, 1-2.30pm, and also on the 21st at Auden House, Cemetery Road, 10am-12noon. They offer one-to-one advice for older people, providing easy access to guidance and options for anyone who has questions about their housing situation. n Visit www.york.gov.uk

Dualit 4 Slice Citrus Yellow Toaster, Barnitts on Colliergate £135.00
Citrus punch Oranges and lemons were hot last month – you’ll remember we were shouting about fruit prints – and they’re back in June with a bang. This time, though, we’re all about citrus colours. Lemon, lime and orange are perhaps the most summery colours of all, and we reckon no home is complete without a splash of citrus this month. This orange Kenwood kettle encapsulates the trend perfectly. We’re in love.
Eclectic chic Yes, we did make this phrase up. Since we moved offices again, we’ve got the decorating bug. The square shelving system in the new home of the creative team used to be filled with lots of the sales team’s filing, so now it was empty it was a prime candidate for a makeover. The creatives (being the inventive souls that they are) got to work collecting lots of samples of wallpaper and ornaments from charity shops to begin the Eclectic Chic transformation. We’re planning on continuing with some dolls’ house-style set-ups too. What would you put in yours? Let us know by getting in touch using the contact details on page five or talk to us on Facebook or Twitter.

Not...
On the sofa Bargain sofabeds always seem like a good idea at first. “Yes, this is good,” you think. “I can kill two birds with one stone – it shall be used both for sitting and sleeping, hurrah!” And that’s all well and good, if you don’t really want to sit on it for longer than five minutes, and you don’t expect your guests to sleep. Ever heard of the phrase ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’? That’s what you’re looking at here.
Pillow talk We love big squishy cushions (no jokes now Kelly) – they’re really comfy. However, when you’re trying to get one of these things onto a chair that’s the size of a postage stamp, you’re going to run into problems. No matter how squishable the cushion, if it’s too big it’s going to end up on the floor.

Going Holme
Keep up to date on the latest design trends & property news
By the year 2030 you could have a few new neighbours, as it is estimated that 40,000 more people will be living in York. Because of this City of York Council has undertaken a massive project of house building, including the creation of a new village on the A64 called Holme Hill. 18,000 new homes are planned for construction, mostly in the planned new village but also near Clifton Moor and around Copmanthorpe and Monks Cross. The proposed plans are somewhat controversial, with York Outer MP Julian Sturdy opposing the move, partly because of the allocation of Green belt land for development. n Keep up to date on the plans at www.york.gov.uk

Dummies’ guide to:
built-in appliances Electrical expert Matt Todd makes it easy to understand the latest technology. retailer. Also, integrated appliances are by their nature more expensive, but that is simply because they are built to last longer.
When is a washing machine not a washing machine? Answer: when it looks like a cupboard! Like the stealth plane of the appliance world the integrated, built-in or ‘behind the door’ product disguises itself to blend in with its surroundings and if you have replaced your kitchen in the last ten years you will undoubtedly have been offered one or more of these products. Designed to fit seamlessly with your kitchen they look great, offer
flexibility a freestanding product cannot and make your kitchen feel more spacious. Whether buying for a new kitchen or replacing products in your old kitchen there are a few things to bear in mind. To replace an existing appliance when it goes wrong there will usually be a few options to choose from so it’s always worth asking the advice of your kitchen supplier or local independent
By going for a built-in cooker, you can get a sleek look for your appliances, at a height that will make for less back strain. Cutting edge kitchen designs adopt a similar approach with dishwashers, lifting them up to make accessing the bottom draw a breeze. And that’s not all: cookers can appear from your worktop, as can extractor fans, and drawers can be dishwashers or fridges to add a real touch of flair. The range of integrated products has never been better with ovens, hobs, hoods, washers, dishwashers, coffee machines and wine coolers all proving popular. You can even get your own built in beer tap; that surely is luxury!

Conservatory comfort
To make the most of your conservatory, it needs to be an ambient temperature all year round. Make your conservatory work for you with an insulated conservatory ceiling from Hobgate.
Save up to
80%
of heat loss in the winter and keep cool in the summer!
72
Part of the appeal of having a conservatory is being able to bring the outside in during the summer months – but do you ever find that your garden room tends to be on the stifling side? This may have been an accepted downside of having a conservatory in days gone by, as the standard polycarbonate roof system used in many conservatories doesn’t insulate well even when expensive blinds are fitted. However, now there’s no need to put up with poor insulation thanks to a clever bit of engineering that will allow you to use your conservatory in comfort all year round. The insulated conservatory ceiling, fitted by the expert team from Hobgate Insulated
Conservatory Ceilings, will save you money on heating and air conditioning bills, while also making your conservatory feel like a proper, usable room in your home. Using the most thermally effective insulation, the team will fit SuperQuilt© − which comes with a lifetime guarantee − to the existing interior roof structure, and finish with plastering and optional decorating and lighting. The system allows you to save up to an incredible 80% of heat loss in the winter, and prevent uncomfortable heat build-up in the summer. Your conservatory really can feel like a part of your home and a room that you can use all year round without breaking the bank.
Customer testimonial Norman from Co Durham, pictured, is certainly a happy customer. “Having an insulated ceiling fitted into my conservatory this spring has made such a difference, I can’t believe it!” says Norman. “It now feels like a real room and part of the house, and everyone enjoys going in there. I can’t recommend the fitters from Hobgate enough. They turned up when they said they would, they were polite and helpful, and left my conservatory clean and tidy before they left. I wish I’d done this years ago!” Take Norman’s advice – don’t delay in putting your conservatory to good use throughout the year. Perfect Ponds Graham from Pond Planet offers top tips on making the most of your pond and looking after the fish who call it home.
June brings around warmer water temperatures, longer days and increased sunlight which can lead to serious algae problems. Pond keepers can suffer from green water algae or blanket weed. These can persist throughout the summer if not controlled properly. UVC clarifiers are the most effective way to control green water. These devices work alongside a pump and filter to remove green water algae from ponds. A good tip is to make sure you replace your UV bulb at the start of each season to keep your UVC working effectively. Blanket weed is best controlled with a suitable treatment. Ask at your nearest water garden outlet for the most effective treatments. At this time of year fish will start to feed more actively as the water warms up. Only add feed that will be consumed within five minutes to avoid surplus food polluting the pond. It is important to monitor water parameters as feeding is increased. Weekly water tests should be performed for Ammonia, pH, Nitrite and Nitrate throughout the summer. n For advice, call Pond Planet on 01347 811897.

BOO! Want to grow some plants in your garden, but can’t be bothered to wait for them to grow? You’re probably too busy tweeting on you iPad and shouting “buy, sell, buy!” down the phone, you modern person, you. You should consider filling your garden with bamboo. Part of the grass family, bamboo comes in hundreds of varieties and colours, with some species growing up 35 inches each day. EACH DAY! We did the maths (it hurt) and worked out that in just two days, you would have grown a plant the same height as our dear writer Nicolette. Impressive. Although we doubt bamboo loves grammar as much as Nic does.
Home tweet home It’s nice to pop off home at the end of a busy day – get into the warmth and to the loving embrace of your chicks. If you’re a bird. See which of these you can spot this month… Strawberries. June is a great month to check your crop of strawbs as by the time June rocks up many of the fruits will be big and ripe enough to harvest. Keep an eye out for the tiddlers with a few weeks growth left in them, and be prepared to remove any rotting or diseased berries. Hopefully by the time of Wimbledon you’ll have enough strawberries to enjoy watching Andy Murray lose.
Badgers. Gini hates badgers as they give her cows TB. However, they are a beautiful creature to observe in the wild. When the warm weather sets in during June they tend to come out of their sets more often. Look for pad prints, scratch marks, and fur left behind on fences. Creatures of habit, badgers will usually return to a place they’ve been before, so be patient and they’ll be back.

make everything in your garden lovely with dean’s garden centre
FOCUS ON:
English roses
The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down.
English roses are a series of roses that have been developed over the last 40 years by David Austin. They have been bred to combine the fullness of the blooms and sweet perfume of old fashioned roses with the repeat flowering and brighter colouring of the modern hybrid tea and floribunda roses. Most varieties will begin to flower in June and will continue to bloom until November if the weather is mild. English Roses are generally more disease resistant than hybrid tea and floribunda roses due to the extensive breeding programme.
Recommended varieties Constance Spry: The original English rose, and still one of the best when grown as a climber, allowing it to achieve its potential of around 3m (10ft). It produces large, rose pink, deeply cupped fragrant blooms in huge quantities.
Location and care English roses are remarkably adaptable and can be used in a mixed border with other shrubs and perennials, looking particularly good when under planted with blue or pink herbaceous Geraniums like ‘Johnsons Blue’ or ‘Wargrave Pink’, Alchemilla mollis or Nepeta. They look equally at home in a traditional rose bed, while some of the more vigorous varieties such as ‘A Shropshire Lad’, ‘Constance Spry’ and ‘Gertrude Jekyll’, can be used as short climbers if trained and left unpruned.
Scarborough Fair: A healthy, tough and reliable repeat flowering rose with pure soft pink flowers and a musky old rose scent. It forms a compact bush growing to around 75cm (2’6”).
As with all roses, they are heavy feeders and benefit from an annual mulch and feed of a specialised rose fertiliser. Although most varieties exhibit good

disease resistance, a periodic spray with a combined insecticide and fungicide would be of benefit. Pruning is usually done between late January and early March depending on the area. On all plants, remove any weak, dead or diseased growth. The remaining growth can then be pruned back by between a third and a half.
Graham Thomas: This award winning variety produces medium sized cup shape flowers of pure yellow with a rich classic tea scent. Can be grown as a bush or trained as a climber. Munstead Wood: Another multiple award winning variety. The large blooms are light crimson in bud then open to a deep, rich velvety crimson while the outer petals remain lighter in colour and have a strong old rose fragrance. A bushy habit growing to approximately 1m (3ft) high.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…
Cream of the crop
A bowl of ripe juicy strawberries has to be an iconic feature of British summertime. They are easy to grow, require little space and give good returns on the initial investment. Strawberries also grow well in grow-bags and window boxes. If you want to indulge throughout the summer months, or just want to pick some fruit for the odd bowl, there are varieties to suit your needs. Strawberry varieties fall into four categories; early, mid season, late and perpetual. Selecting a combination of plants will give you continuous crops throughout the summer. If you just want a few ready to pick at the height of summer, opt for a mid-season variety. How to grow Strawberries are a relatively short-term crop, producing good yields for about three years, but that is no excuse for poor soil preparation. Choose a site in full sun, and prepare the bed and cover the surface with a good layer of well-rotted manure. Fork this through, incorporating it well into the top soil. Prior to planting, rake over the Brunswick offer surface of the bed to produce a small range a decent tilth (a gardener’s of carefully word for nutrient-rich soil) and plant at 30cm (12”) apart with selected organic 60cm (24”) spacing between strawberry plants the rows. Plant up using a for sale in pots.
82
trowel, making sure the roots are fully extended downwards and the crown of each plant is just clear of the surface. Firm the soil around each plant and water in well to settle the soil around the roots. It makes good sense to mulch strawberry beds, not only to reduce water evaporation but to prevent weed seeds germinating and to protect fruit from sitting on damp soil. Woven ground cover fabric does the best job as it allows water to seep through, but it does not look aesthetically pleasing! If you are not bothered by such things, it should be positioned and pegged down, before planting through cross slits made 30cm apart. Alternatively, straw or hay can be applied once fruits begin to form to keep moisture and soil off the crop. Aftercare Weeds are a big problem for shallow rooting strawberry plants as they dislike root disturbance, so if you are not using a mulch, hand weed carefully as they emerge. From June onwards plants will begin to produce runners which can be left and trained to root, forming a continuous matted row, or removed to encourage bigger berries and reduce the likelihood of disease. After fruiting has finished remove all the dead foliage and apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould. If growing through plastic apply a liquid feed in spring.

They will happily share their invaluable knowledge with you, during the class ‘Growing Vegetables All Year Round’ on 22nd June, and the intricacies of how to ‘Grow, Use and Cook Soft Fruit’ on 20th July. Got a gardening question? Our resident green-fingered guru CHRIS BROWN can help
Q. Q.
Can you please recommend some trailing plants for my hanging basket and pots? In the past I have never had much success at growing these. First, you should start by buying a good hanging basket compost, because it will have more plant food in it. Also, add a slow release fertilizer which should last four to five months. Four weeks after you have planted your container, add a high potash feed like a tomato feed. A few good plants to use in both baskets and pots, and which should give you a riot of colour all summer, include: Fuschias | Geraniums | Diasia | Nemesia | Trailing lobelia Nepeta Helichrysum Brachycome | Million bells | Surfinia Begonias | Petunias | Marigolds
I have some camellias in my garden and when the flowers open they are often brown and mushy, and some of the buds fall off. How can I stop this? Camellias flower from late winter to early spring and frost is a problem for this plant. When in the wild it will grow in deciduous forests, so shade is important. Also,
ericaceous compost will give you good leaf colour. When you plant a camellia it should not be planted in an east-facing situation as the morning sun will thaw the frost on the buds of the camellia and burn the flowers inside. It’s a good idea to plant camellias in pots as you can then move them to a more sheltered place.
Q.
The fruit on my tomato plants have a brown ring around the bottom of them where the flower was. What is this, and how can I stop it from happening? This is calcium deficiency, also known as blossom end rot. It’s caused by a water shortage when the plant is growing rapidly, so it’s important to water your plant regularly and feed it fortnightly with a high potash tomato feed. It’s also a good idea to have good ventilation in the greenhouse to stop disease spreading onto your tomato plants. If pollination is a problem, try tapping the truss (the branch of yellow flowers) with your finger. This will give you a good crop of decent size fruit. Regular watering will also prevent your tomatoes from splitting.

Gardening isn’t just for boring adults growing dull flowers – there are plenty of fun things to do with plants, including…leaf rubbings! WHAT YOU NEED: Different sizes and shapes of tree leaves such as maple, oak, hackberry, mulberry, or ginkgo, coloured paper and wax crayons. HOW TO: Take one of your leaves and place it onto a clean, dry surface. Pick up a piece of coloured paper and rest on top of the leaf. Hold the paper down firmly and colour over the leaf using the side of the crayon. Make sure you colour the whole of the leaf, and hold the paper down hard to bring out all of its veins. Repeat the process again by moving different leaves into different positions under the paper. Use different, darker colours to make a beautiful work of art!

Around two thirds of us suffer from ‘Asparagus Wee’, where our urine smells particularly strong after eating the veg. This is because of the metabolism of the sulphurous compound Mercaptan. This same compound is found in rotten eggs, onions, garlic and skunks’ scent!
A different delight If someone suggested that you should go to the Barbakan, you’d probably assume they were mis-spelling the name of the giant concert and sports venue on Paragon Street. But the chances are that they are urging you to go to The Barbakan Café and Restaurant on Walmgate. The friendly, family-run eatery is causing quite a stir at the moment, as they offer a delicious menu of truly unique Eastern European and Polish food. Call in for a cup of coffee, some homemade pastries and plenty of options for lunch. If you’re looking for something away from the boring old mainstream, then The Barbakan is definitely for you. n Call 672474.
Prince Regent The sun is shining, the weekend draws near and you long to have a meal with friends and family to celebrate the summer. Do you roll out and dust off the barbeque? You could do, but we’re all off to the Regency Restaurant on Barbican Road for a slap-up Chinese banquet instead. That’s because not only does the Regency offer a full sit-in menu of the finest oriental cuisine, but they also boast a delicious range of take-away food, all served up from the recently refurbished premises that sit a stone’s throw from Walmgate Bar. n Call 659976.

Get a
grilling She’s been a good girl recently, so we packed our dear Kelly off to sample the delights of The Grill Room at The Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa.
Our drinks order was immediately taken at the bar and we were presented with the Sunday Lunch menu. What a choice! The starters include Whitby crab with cucumber caviar, squash velouté and pork cheek. Andy went for the pork, while I chose wild mushroom risotto. Andy’s pork was lusciously tender and wonderfully complimented by the red cabbage and sweet potato. My risotto was crammed with different kinds of mushrooms and really tasty. We didn’t talk to each other during the starters. It was a nice break for me! I was really looking forward to my meal at The Grill Room as I’d heard some fantastic things about it. As you’d expect from the restaurant of a five-star hotel, my boyfriend Andy and I received an extremely warm welcome when we arrived.

What’s your beef? For the main course we both opted for the Sunday classic of roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, potatoes and root vegetables – we couldn’t resist it. We’re glad we didn’t, because it was cooked to absolute perfection.
The tatties were nice and crispy on the outside, while remaining fluffy on the inside. The veg was lovely – particularly the parsnips – and the Yorkshires went down an absolute treat with the superb gravy (of which we had a jug each – top marks, Grill Room). The beef itself was pink in the middle, just how we like it, and served as a nice hearty portion of two large slices – clearly this place doesn’t scrimp on size. We both really enjoyed our main course – it filled us up to the point that when the waiter returned to take our dessert order we had to say no. I regretted that later though, as the menu contains yummy-looking vanilla panna cotta, chocolate delice, mascarpone tart and a selection of cheeses.
The price is right We both really enjoyed our lunch at The Grill Room and were happily surprised at the price. The current Sunday Lunch menu is only £19.95 for two courses, or £24.95 for three. Add that to the terrific and attentive service we received and the elegant décor of the dining area, and The Grill Room really is the perfect place for a special Sunday lunch. Andy loved it too; so much so that he was licking the plate clean before I’d started my potatoes. I honestly can’t take him anywhere, but if I had to take him somewhere, it would be back to the Grill Room at The Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa. n Visit www.cedarcourtgrand.co.uk or call 380038.

LIGHTBULB MOMENT Need some inspiration on how to keep yourself entertained this month? The York Festival of Ideas, taking place from 13th-29th June, will provide shedloads. York is a city that is rich in heritage, discovery and an overriding sense of curiosity – in short, a city where ideas spring to life and flourish and where collaboration is celebrated. It’s no wonder, then, that the York Festival of Ideas has flourished since it launched in 2011, and this year’s festival will feature partnerships with a range of national organisations including BBC Radio 3, The British Library, Granta Magazine, The Institute for Engineering and Technology and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The programme will feature over 120 events – most of which are free – as well as an excellent roster of speakers and performers including Seamus Heaney, Melvyn Bragg, Heidi Thomas and Lord Sainsbury. Plenty to keep your grey matter ticking over, whatever your interests. The 2013 theme is ‘North and South’, bringing together a range of world-class speakers, exhibitions, performances and interactive experiences for all ages and recognising York’s status as capital of the north. You don’t need any specialist knowledge to attend any event – just bring an enquiring mind and prepare to be stimulated and inspired! n Tickets are available at www.yorkfestivalofideas.com Call 324778.

A trip to the moon. If you fancy letting off a bit of steam after all that intelligent debate, get your music-loving self to the Apollo Festival on 29th June at York Sports Club, Clifton Park. Be a part of something special and attend the first ever Apollo Festival! The line-up of local bands is pretty impressive, including We Could Be Astronauts, Littlemores, Andy Doonan and David Ward-MacLean. Aside from the awesome music the emphasis is very much on family-friendly fun, with bungee trampolines, slides, face painting, a fairground and lots of other entertaining attractions. All the proceeds from the Apollo Festival will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which helps children diagnosed with different forms of cancer. A worthy cause and a great local venue will certainly make the Apollo Festival one to watch out for year after year. n Visit www.apollofestival.co.uk
A military tattoo We’re staying at the racecourse for our next firm fave, and this is one you won’t have to ‘ink’ about. Ink for Heroes is a tattoo convention to raise funds for veterans’ charity Help for Heroes. Whether you are known in certain circles as Painted Pete, or indeed never even considered getting a tattoo, there will be something for you at Ink for Heroes on 22nd-23rd June. Not only is it a great chance to see some truly incredible art and the artists who create it, there will also be stalls, live entertainment, activities and competitions for the kids – all in aid of injured soldiers and their families. During the course of the weekend there will be a charity auction and plenty of trade stands for clothes, shoes and accessories. There will also be demonstrations of body modification, which we thought was to do with getting bionic arms and eyes. We’ll be there to see if that is true. n Visit www.inkforheroes.co.uk
Cop a load… Fun in the sun is promised with aplomb at York’s longest running carnival. On 6th July the south of York will come alive at the Copmanthorpe Carnival, and this year will be more ferocious than ever. The theme is all about Vikings, and festival goers will be able to wander about a recreated Viking village, step back in time and learn Viking craft and sword combat. You might need a sword to fight your way to the main stage, as bands like One Night Only and Elliot Minor are bound to draw a crowd. There will also be performances by York Breakdance, The Dance Factory and Limelight Dance Group – as well as many more yet to be confirmed. If raging Norsemen and top class bands aren’t your thing, how about something else? There will be fairground rides, a birds of prey display, donkey rides, a bungee run and a giant assault course. Sounds like it will be quite a day. n Visit www.copmanthorpe.org.uk/carnival

Variety is the spice of life We chat to Julie Harrison, co-producer of The Centenary Follies, on how the company plan to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Joseph Rowntree Players, one of York’s most established amateur theatre groups. That’s entertainment
“It was a spur of the moment suggestion that I made to the committee when we were deciding how to celebrate the centenary,” says Julie on the decision to produce a variety show. “Barry Benson quickly jumped up and thought it was a great idea and thanked me for saying I would do it – I swear to this day I never said I would, but here I am!” She jokes. It was after looking into the history of the Players that Julie found that a variety show was more appropriate than she’d realised. “I’d had no idea, but funnily enough I found that the Rowntree Players used to put on similar shows years ago, before they started doing the annual pantomime, so we’re reviving a tradition!”
A helping hand Luckily, Julie had some helpful friends on hand to assist with digging into the archives of the Rowntree Players. “Sir Donald Barron, who was CEO of Rowntrees in the 1950s, was invaluable to the project. He was a founder of the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, a charity that we’ll be collecting for after the shows. He was also Chair at the Rowntree Players whilst he was at the factory, and got really involved with the productions, playing several roles including Pickering in Pygmalion. He was a huge help.” Julie also had help from another veteran of the Rowntree Players, Peter Walls, who

sadly passed away in May. “Peter was a member for a great many years and a big name in the Rowntree Players, and really helped us with getting photographs and memorabilia for our souvenir programme and the display we’ve put together,” says Julie. “The show is dedicated to all members past and present, but especially to Peter and his memory.”
Julie explains that the show will feature a range of entertainment including dance, magic and comedy, and songs from the past 100 years. “It’s really diverse – we’ll go from stuff from Pygmalion to In the Navy by the Village People, with a medley of war songs in between, and songs by more modern artists like Michael Bublé thrown in there too. It gives everyone a chance to shine, which is fantastic,” says Julie. She adds that the people who set up the Rowntree Players wanted to develop the workers’ confidence so that they could eventually be able to become Charge Hands and Managers. “I guess we’re doing what Joseph and Seebohm wanted all along – to give people confidence and to entertain the people of York!” The Centenary Follies will run from 14th-15th June. Visit www.rowntreeplayers.co.uk or call 07816 935160.
Model family Julie says that the Rowntree family provided a great company to work for. “You have to admire the Rowntree family as they really did believe in all people being spoken to in the same way and being offered the same opportunities in life. A lot of my family worked at the factory, and they all commented on how approachable and fair management were.” It seems that opportunities are still provided at the Rowntree Players today, as working as a Stage Manager at age 17 helped Julie herself to go on to forge a professional career in the industry, working in stage management in Bromley, Harrogate and at York Theatre Royal. “One of our present members, Leanne Hope, will be doing this as her last show before going on to the Northern Royal Ballet, and we’ve got other members who are at drama and dance school at the moment, so it’s a great springboard for a performing career,” says Julie.
They started at Joseph Rowntree Players… Giles Shaw, Marketing Manager at Rowntree, went on from the Players to become an MP in Margaret Thatcher’s government - and was very good at writing lyrics and changing song lyrics for the Follies shows. In the first Pantomime in 1980 Janet McTeer played Robin Hood, and by 1985 was in professional theatre, TV and films after having trained at RADA. Janet won a Golden Globe for the film ‘Tumbleweeds’.
History corner Worried about the lack of education of the new starters at the factory, Joseph Rowntree and his son Seebohm built a school which is now part of Nuffield Hospital and was the dining block for Rowntree in later years. The pair also wanted to encourage confidence in their workers, and so set up the Cocoa Works Dramatic Group, as it was then known. The group performed for the first time in 1912 with ‘Sweet Lavender’ by Pinero at the De Grey Rooms. Following productions were put on in the dining block of the factory. The Joseph Rowntree Theatre opened in November 1935, and the Cocoa Dramatic Works became known as the Rowntree Players. Over the years, the society began to take members who were not workers at the factory, so the acting base grew. In 1954 the society performed their first May-time Follies, a lighthearted revue show, which ran most years until 1980, when the annual pantomime started.
Pip Leckenby, who began performing and helping with the players from a young age, is now the scenic designer at the Stephen Joseph Theatre at Scarborough.

A fantastic opportunity to see Shakespeare’s Globe opening a new version of the first part of The Wars of the Roses here in York before they take the production to London. The plays which make up Shakespeare’s Henry VI create a world without ideology; a savage time, when the heroes are not kings, but formidable women, such as Joan of Arc, or rebels, such as Jack Cade.

people into brain-dead zombies, Brad Pitt tours the globe trying to reduce the spread of the infection. Keep your eyes peeled for scenes set in New York City – they were actually filmed in Glasgow! It was apparently cheaper to film there (plus there were already a bunch of zombies knocking about – tee hee).
After Earth. Summer is definitely upon us. We know this because the cinemas are awash with high-budget, high-octane sci-fi flicks, beginning with After Earth. Will Smith plays a man stuck on an alien world with his son (played by real-life son Jaden Smith) and together they must stay alive while besieged by wild beasts and scary creatures. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (Director of Sixth Sense and Unbreakable – and a load of rubbish films since then) this promises to get the summer off to a thrilling start. We doubt very much Will Smith will be releasing a rap song to accompany this. Phew, dodged that bullet.

This Is the End. A bevvy of
private rehearsals, footage of secret gigs and all the banter the band has to offer. Designer diva Rachel is about ready to explode with excitement about this.
Man of Steel. This month’s obligatory super hero movie features the one who literary put the ‘super’ in ‘super hero’. Superman is given a shiny new retelling in Man of Steel, directed by the guy that made Spartans sexy in 300, Zack Snyder. Taking up the red cape and pants this time round is British actor Henry Cavill who you
might remember from The Tudors TV show. The story sees dear old Clark ‘fooling nobody with those glasses’ Kent being called in to deal with an alien invasion – from members of his own race. Quick, to the phone booth!
World War Z. All the girls in the Your Local Link office really like Brad Pitt, while all the boys really like zombies. That is why we’re all looking forward to World War Z (it’s a pun if you say ‘Z’ like an American – ‘Zee’) as it combines these two things with aplomb. After a virus turns millions of
hot young movie stars play themselves in this humorous look at the end of the world. While at a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Emma Watson - and lots of other familiar faces – find themselves in the middle of the apocalypse. As can happen. From the look of the trailer this promises to be a tongue-firmlyin cheek romp, with lots of banter and laughs from the actors playing themselves… sort of. We’re planning our own End of World film in which Nic tries to take over the world with her super command of grammar. We need funding so please make cheques payable to Your Local Link.
