There’s something about the month of March that makes people go a bit loco – maybe it’s the arrival of spring, or perhaps it’s because some of us have only just finished the last portion of frozen turkey curry leftover from Christmas and we feel like celebrating. Whatever the cause, Mad March seems to have come early to the Your Local Link office. Poor Rach got the shock of her life to discover that she’d managed to get all the way to work without wearing a skirt. What made it worse was that she didn’t notice until lunchtime. Luckily she had a long cardigan on…
So, remember we signed up to take part in a 10K run? We were going to train every day and be size four models by now? Yeah, it hasn’t quite happened like that. We started with such good intentions – you’ll remember Helen returning to the office battered and bruised after her ordeal – but the weather kind of got in the way. Or at least, that’s what we told ourselves. We can’t possibly be expected to set foot outside when there’s over an inch of snow on the ground, or the wind is blowing at over two miles an hour. Nah, much better to stay in where it’s safe. And while we’re here, we might as well have a cuppa and a biscuit. We’ll start properly next month. Anyway, we have bought our sportswear, so we’re halfway there already.
That wasn’t the only weird thing that’s happened, though. A lovely reader entered one of our competitions by post – and included a negative of a photo of a man in swimming trunks next to two other blokes in suits. We returned it, though we were incredibly tempted to develop it and do some super sleuth detective work to discover who was in the picture.
MAD MARCH As it’s Mad March, we’ve been sharing our favourite bad jokes in the office. Here’s our favourite... Why did the scarecrow win the noble peace prize? Because he was outstanding in his field

march HOTLIST....
What to do in March
Be saintly March is home to two very special saints days – Saint David’s Day on 1st March, and St Patrick’s Day on 17th March. They’re both great days to celebrate with your children – in ways that don’t have to involve getting your stomach pumped.
Show mum you care
Where would we be without our mums? As teenagers we might not have spoken to them in the nicest possible way (there are still some doors in our childhood homes with cracks in from repeated door slamming), so now we’re all grown up its time to show them just how much we care. Head to the Food and Drink section to find the perfect place to take your ma for a slap up meal, and see the Family section for some ideas on how to treat her on a budget. Hey, it’s the thought that counts.
Bring home the bacon We reckon Bacon Connoisseur’s Week (taking place from 18th-24th March) is the perfect excuse to eat a bacon butty every morning. The week encourages consumers to buy quality bacon – head to your local butchers to see what they have to offer!
Go on tour
We’re thrilled at the news that the Grand Départ of the Tour de France is due to pass through Yor k in 2014 – head to our idiot’s guide in the sport column!
St David is the patron saint of Wales, where people still celebrate the day by wearing daffodils and leeks, and making Cawl – a traditional Welsh soup, including salted bacon or beef, potatoes, swedes and other seasonal vegetables. Visit www.wales.com and type St David’s Day into the search bar for some great children’s activities, such as making your own 3D dragon or Welsh bunting. You may associate St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with heavy drinking sessions, but there are lots of traditional ways to celebrate the festival with children – why not have a craft session inspired by the symbols of the day, such as the shamrock and the colour green? You could also use the opportunity to teach your children about the history of Ireland.

read a book The Literature Festival will take place once again from 19th-24th March, and we’re getting ready to delve into the pages of a good book. Famous writers such as Carol Ann Duffy, Will Self and Simon Armitage will appear and there will be plenty of workshops and readings that cover a wide range of genres. Check out our interview with Tony Hawks – the man who hitch hiked around Ireland with a fridge – in the Culture Column. n For more information on the festival, visit www.yorkliteraturefestival.co.uk

The best of friends? A complete stranger telephoned me the other day. ‘Hi, Donna, how are you?’ the chummy voice on the other end of the line said. A bit ticked off that you’ve called me right in the middle of Pointless, since you ask. ‘Who wants to know?’ I replied. Turned out it was a bloke called Mark, who actually wanted to find out if I’d been mis-sold PPI. But the way he was talking, I thought he might be a long lost brother or a best mate I’d forgotten about. Why do people feel the need to be so over-familiar these days? I wouldn’t call myself unfriendly – even though I am from London, a city with fractionally less warmth than the polar ice cap – but I don’t particularly want to be BFFs with every cold caller who
12
randomly dials my number. Call centres do it all the time. ‘Now Mrs Hay, can I call you Donna?’ ‘No.’ ‘Ok, then, Donna, just to let you know that for training purposes I will be repeating your name throughout
“I don’t particularly want to be BFFs with every cold caller who randomly dials my number.” this phone call, because it may dupe you into thinking I actually care about your problem and will do something about it, rather than just fobbing you off with some excuse.’
Social network You can’t get away from it on the internet, either. ‘Hi Donna, welcome back,’ the shopping sites say when I sign in. Or sometimes they’ll send me a poignant email saying, ‘Donna, where have you been? We’ve missed you!’ As if the entire sales force has been seriously concerned about my welfare, instead of just sending out a computer generated appeal for me to buy more kitchen gadgets online. I actually blame Facebook. Thanks to them, now we all have to be ‘friends’ and ‘like’ each other, instead
false friends ‘Hey, welcome to the gang!’ says my new broadband provider. ‘If you want to read all the boring legal stuff, look on our website – yawn!’ Thanks, I will. Because to be honest, I’m a bit worried about entering into a contract with someone who sounds like an excitable teenager on a Red Bull binge. ‘Well, this is embarrassing, folks,’ says Firefox when it fails to browse. Really, is it? I don’t think so. Until the Firefox Internet Browser has walked out of a pub toilet trailing a piece of toilet paper from its heel and with its skirt tucked into its pants, I really don’t think it’s plumbed the depths of embarrassing. Annoying, yes. Embarrassing – not really. ‘What’s on your mind, Donna?’ a website asked me the other day. As I’d just spent the best part of half an hour trying to find a phone number so I could talk to a real person, what was on my mind was borderline unprintable. And it was far from friendly.

Donna...
There’s no better barometer on what’s hot and what’s not than our Donna. Here, she shares her thoughts on what’s in or out in her own unique style!
Hot… home cooking. The recent ‘horsemeat in the ready meals’ scandal has made us all get out the cookery books again (not to mention creating millions of comic opportunities about lowering our Shergar levels, etc). Because if you really want to know what you’re eating, you have to make it yourself.
Not… currys/pc world. I went in there to buy a new laptop last week, and stood for 30 minutes, waiting for someone to serve me. In the end I gave up and left. The next day I went in with my husband, and within five minutes the men in purple shirts were swarming all over him. Women have credit cards too, you know!

Starsign of the month... Pisces (19th February - 20th March)
here’s a few famous faces you share your sign with
by James Christie n For details of private readings phone 07884 107100 or 01423 339770 Email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk
A complex and complicated month in which you will have to be all things to all people, frequently spending too much time sorting out their problems for them as well as having to deal with your own agendas. On more than one occasion you’ll find you need to be in two places at once, which is, of course, impossible, and therefore without meaning to, you’re going to end up upsetting someone. If a friendship or a relationship seems to wobble a bit in March, take solace from the fact that this won’t be your fault and you mustn’t allow yourself to take the blame for someone else’s over-expectations. You’ll feel angry and disappointed around 5th March when an old problem you thought you’d sorted out ages ago, flares up again because of a third party’s stupidity or their basic lack of understanding. Some legal or bureaucratic energies coalesce around 10th March, and if some sort of official papers need to be signed, then sign your name with a confident flourish. An overland journey in the latter ten days of the month might not take you across water to exotic locations, but it will get you out of your usual environment and provide some degree of diversion.

(21st March - 19th April)
(20th April - 20th May)
(21st May - 20th June)
(21st June - 22nd July)
This month seems to be broken into two halves, the first fortnight seeing you preoccupied with emotional and romantic issues, while the latter couple of weeks sees you concentrating on careers, finances and more practical matters.
Travel plans become relevant between 10th and 17th March and there is quite a nostalgic buzz to some of your travels. You should be in the centre of things socially, but there may be a tendency for other people to expect too much from you at this time.
Changes of jobs for some, while there will be changes of job titles and work routines for others. This is a good time to embrace the concept of change and even if things sometimes seem a little scary, there is some very positive energy around you.
Through no fault of your own, plans may have to be changed at the last minute. Self recrimination is unjustified if a third party has dropped you in it. A set-back may cause some disappointment but at the same time it will harden your resolve to succeed.
14
(23rd July - 23rd August) This looks like being a very cosy and romantic few weeks, but be warned against taking things for granted or being complacent. What goes up like a rocket usually comes down with a bump, and there is probably someone close to you who is not being quite as open and honest with you as you might expect.
VIRGO (24th August - 22nd September) Even though you may get involved in some emotional horse trading (you scratch my itch and I’ll scratch yours) this is a time to keep a clear head and put greater faith in some pragmatic objectivity rather than instinct or intuition.
Libra (23rd September - 22nd October) Health checks and medical examinations may be relevant at this time, but rather than this being a dark scenario it is a period in which a number of worries and concerns are sorted out with successful results. This is a very positive period for anyone involved in the arts.
Scorpio (23rd October - 21st November) This month we need to look at Scorpio from two different perspectives! Ladies of the sign will enjoy being in control of their
emotions and will dictate the terms of their relationships. Gentlemen, on the other hand, won’t have much time for romance as they apply themselves to the art of making money!
the best of york
LEO
Sagittarius (22nd November - 21st December) There are strong travel opportunities between 10th and 17th March, and overall this should be a month for letting your hair down and enjoying some quality time with a lover or partner. You may need to keep an eye on your expenditure.
Capricorn (22nd December - 19th January) This should be a bright and cheerful month with lots of travel and social opportunities creating a welcome break from work routines. This positive mood could be spoiled, however, if you are going to allow yourself to worry about things over which you have no control.
Aquarius (20th January - 18th February) Whether you want to be or not, you’re in charge, you’re in control, and other people will be waiting to take their lead from you. Your organisational ability will serve you well, and while other people have no problem seeing the big picture, it is you who will have to deal with all the little details.

All of the repertoire is in French so an interest in or know ledge of French would also be a plus. The group is friendly and informal and meets on Wednesday evenings near Clifton Green. n Call or text Mark on 07522 954 158.

“Who are you... …who who, who who?” sang The Who. They had a point though – do you know who you truly are? A good way to get an idea of where we come from is to look into the past and research our family history. City of York & District Family History Society hold meetings at The Folk Hall, New Earswick, on the first Wednesday of every month, and they invite budding genealogists to pop along and have a chat over coffee. The society also runs a study centre on James Street, open to everyone on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for researching family history. There is always a dedicated volunteer on hand to help and advise. n Visit www.yorkfamilyhistory.org.uk

A groovy gift Generation Groove had an extra excuse to boogie after raising £500 for Homeless Charity SASH recently. The group, who have been playing for over ten years, perform a wide range of music at various venues in York, and donated the money they raised from their Christmas Concert. SASH work to prevent 16-24 year olds from becoming homeless by offering them shelter in volunteers’ homes. Their network of ‘hosts’ provides emergency Nightstop accommodation, including an evening meal and breakfast for troubled young people. Generation Groove’s bass guitarist Dave Wilson says: “We wanted to support a charity that was helping young people in York. SASH fitted the bill perfectly – we were pleased to be able to help.”

Star pupils York students are a clever bunch – especially, it seems, those who attend York College. Seven of the college’s bright sparks are hoping to head to either Oxford or Cambridge to continue their studies later this year, after receiving offers from the cities’ prestigious universities. Hopefully on course to Cambridge are Dan Kozelko, Jade Cuttle, Oscar Powell and Peter Bock. Eager to be off to Oxford are Emily Freeman, Harriet Gray and Josh Meikle. Miggy Biller, Head of Division for
Maths and co-ordinator of Oxbridge applications at York College, says everyone at York College will continue to support them to ensure they attain their required grades. “Out of the seven successful candidates, six are A Level students and one (Emily) is a vocational student. They have all done extremely well to be selected.” The college has grown to be the largest provider of students to university in the region, with around 900 students sending in UCAS applications this year.
The city of York certainly has a lot to boast about – the walls, the Minster, and now, its contributions to oral hygiene. The ‘Brush DJ’ smart phone app, developed by Ben Underwood from Clifton, has been awarded the ‘Best Dental Innovation Award’, judged by leading figures in the oral healthcare industry. The app uses a timer to play two minutes of music taken at random from the user’s device, aiming to make the mundane task of brushing more fun, and has already been downloaded in 150 countries. Users can also set reminders to prompt brushing, change toothbrushes and book dental appointments. Ben says the award has made his hard work worthwhile, calling it a “great honour.”

Green-fingered giving Staff at Dean’s Garden Centre on Stockton Lane can give themselves a pat on the back after raising a massive £19,787.53 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Customers and staff helped to raise the funds, which, together with a £3000 donation from the centre’s business partners, made it their biggest charity contribution yet. The folks at Deans ask staff to nominate a charity to fundraise for each year, and the team did so in 2012 by hosting a range of events such as a jubilee party and a brass band concert. Dean’s Garden Centre has chosen York Against Cancer to support in 2013. You can do your bit by contributing to the charity pots around the store, or throwing a few pennies in their wishing well. Look out for upcoming fundraising events! n Visit www.deansgardencentre.co.uk.

All bets are off Writer and comedian Tony Hawks, who will appear at the York Literature Festival, stopped by for a chat about being mistaken for a skateboarder and hitch hiking around Ireland with a fridge. While Tony thought it was rather odd to see someone trying to get a lift with a fridge while in Ireland, his Irish friends didn’t think anything of it – and his English friend insisted that it wasn’t possible. Hence the bet for Tony to cover the circumference of the country, electrical coolbox in tow, in the space of one calendar month. “Bets have been a source of inspiration for my work,” says Tony, who had never written a book before penning Round Ireland With A Fridge. “The trip around Ireland was an uplifting experience. I thought it would be interesting but lonely, but in fact everyone got on board and celebrated what I was doing. It was an exercise in silliness really, which is something the Irish do best.”
Don’t worry, be happy Tony says that the journey made quite an impact on his life. “The trip forced me to stop worrying. If you’re hitch hiking, you’ll drive yourself insane if you worry about getting somewhere for a certain time. I figured, if I’m stuck here waiting for a lift, I might as well smile. I learnt a lot while I was writing the book, when I had to analyse
24
things. It definitely changed things in a positive way for me.”
Anyone for tennis? Another bet of Tony’s required a trip to Moldova (to challenge the national football team to a game of tennis, naturally), which led to the beginning of something very worthwhile. Tony decided to set up the Moldovan Child Care Centre, which provides care for children with disabilities, as a result of the poverty that he saw during his trip. “I visit every year and stay with the family who run things,” says Tony, who donates proceeds from the sale of his book Playing the Moldovans at Tennis to the centre. “I think it’s important to make a difference in a small way,” says Tony. “I felt like it was only fair to give something back to the place I was writing about.”
Axe to grind If you’re still wondering why we haven’t discussed the best grinding or half pipe technique, that’s because this isn’t the skateboarder Tony Hawk. The comedic Tony Hawks even has a section on his
website that is dedicated to emails he has received from misguided fans, complete with Tony’s “mischievous” replies. “There was a period when I was getting three or four emails a day. One of the most common things that made me laugh was people telling me “You’re my biggest fan.” I’d reply and say “I’m not you’re biggest fan, I don’t even know who you are.” I used to give them ridiculous skating advice like breathing in and leaning to the left a bit more.” n Tony will appear at the York Literature Festival at City Screen on 20th March to present a screening of the film version of Round Ireland With A Fridge from 8pm, followed by a question and answer session. Back to nature If you are eager to see the first buds of spring and the stirrings of nature as winter ends, then perhaps a trip to the museum will serve. Although the Yorkshire Museum is better known for displaying animals of a more extinct persuasion, from 7th March visitors will be able to see things a little differently. Until 6th May, the ‘Mark Hearld: A First Book of Nature’ exhibition will display the beautiful illustrations of Mark Hearld and the animal and nature drawings he completed for the massively successful ‘A First Book of Nature’ by Nicola Davies. The display will be complemented with taxidermy from the Yorkshire Museum’s collection and a variety of illustrations, prints, drawings and ceramics from York Art Gallery’s collections. n Visit www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk

Working in conjunction with Pilot and Slunglow theatre companies, the next production to involve the community will be Blood and Chocolate. This new show will use the city as a backdrop to tell a story inspired by the workers of the chocolate factories during the First World War. The panel show Glass is brilliant. It’s like a wall that you can look through. But staring through the same old uPVC panes all day can be pretty boring – would you prefer to take a look at some glass that was truly artfully created? Such a thing is possible at York Minster, where their domed exhibition The Orb displays panels of medieval glass that have been freshly restored to their former glory. It seems quite a few of us have been intrigued to see the
panels, prior to them being reinstalled in the restored Great East Window, as the Minster recently announced a surge in visitors in the final quarter of 2012. No doubt The Orb, entrance to which is included in the cost of your ticket, has been a contributing factor to the cathedral’s business. Plus The Orb also looks a bit like a space ship, which we’re sure has helped as well. n Visit www.yorkminster.org

Curtains up! The York Theatre Royal is a landmark building in the centre of the city. Who could miss the blend of gothic arches of the original 18th century theatre, with the modern hexagonal café and bar? Now it seems that there are changes afoot as the theatre recently announced they are well on the way to securing a grant from the Arts Council for yet more improvements. Planned developments include enclosing and glazing the colonnade that currently only serves as a place for commuters to shelter from the rain. This will double the amount of public space within the building, and will also improve access to the auditorium itself. The work will be a part of the Reinvigorate York project, which also sees refurbishment to the Art Gallery, Exhibition Square and St Leonards Place, creating a central cultural hub for the city. The development is set to take place during 2015 with lots of planning and design consultations to happen before that. Let’s just hope they run all this past everyone’s favourite dame first – he’s in charge, isn’t he? n Visit www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk/news

son of York
After the confirmation that a skeleton found beneath a car park in Leicester is in fact that of King Richard III, we take a look at the life of the last Yorkist king, his involvement with the city and what the future might hold for his final resting place.
August 1485. Richard was killed in battle and Henry Tudor took the throne as Henry VI.
Richard III: A life in facts. • Born 2nd October 1452. Spent much of his childhood at Middleham Castle in Wensleydale.
• Richard’s body was buried in Greyfriars church in Leicester. A body of evidence. Mike Bennet, who created the Richard III Museum in Monkgate Bar, explains why Richard should be brought back to York.
• Richard’s father, The Duke of York, died at the Battle of Wakefield. His older brother was crowned King Edward IV. • Edward IV died in 1483 leaving Richard as Protector of the Realm and guardian of Edward’s sons. Later that year the Lords decided Edward’s children are illegitimate and crowned Richard. • The princes later went missing, leading to the ‘princes in the tower’ mystery. • Richard's son Edward was created Prince of Wales in York Minster in September 1483.

• During his visits to York the king would lodge at the Augustinian Priory on Lendal, where the Post Office stands today. He often chaired meetings of The Council of the North in St. Mary’s Abbey

"The evidence is overwhelming that Richard wanted to be buried at York Minster. There is no evidence that he desired to be buried anywhere else. The king met the Dean and Chapter of the Minster to discuss the building of a chantry (where prayers are said for the souls of the dead). This had already started to be built by the time of Richard's death in 1485. It is difficult to find an explanation for

“Richard was a great benefactor to York Minster and he also had the top floor of Monk Bar (which now houses the Richard III Museum) built in 1484. There is no real reason why he would want to be buried at Leicester, having no real connection with the place, other than, of course, being killed near it!” Find out more about Richard and his time in York by visiting the museum. A special exhibition allows you to put Richard on trial for the supposed murder of the princes in the tower, letting you decide if you think Richard was guilty or not. Check out www.richardiiimuseum.co.uk A much-loved monarch Contary to the belief that he was an evil king, Richard was clearly very much loved by the citizens of York. Only a day after his death at the Battle of Bosworth, the Mayor of York’s Sergeant of The Mace announced: “King Richard, late mercifully reigning over us, was through great treason piteously slain and murdered, to the great heaviness of this city.” This was a risky thing for a city to

declare, especially when the victor of the battle was currently being declared king. This statement of loyalty to Richard was a clear indicator that he was extremely well-liked in the city and that the people of York thought of him as ‘their’ king. So regardless of what Shakespeare said, it seemed Richard was, at least in York, one of the good guys. Homecoming? Get to London in an hour and ten? Yep, it could happen. It has recently been announced that York will benefit by the proposed High Speed 2 rail system, currently under development by the government. If the project, which will see more than 300 miles of new track laid, goes ahead, York commuters will be able to travel to London in just one hour and ten minutes, and Birmingham in just an hour. James Alexander, Leader of City of York Council, is fully behind the proposed new system, enthusing that, “York will become an even greater hub for tourism and business.
Not really a surprise The Cities Outlook for 2013, a report produced by the Centre for Cities, has found that York remains one of the top performing cities in the UK. Out of the 64 cities analysed, dear old Eboracum ranked sixth with employment figures, a fantastic increase on last year. York was also ranked in the top five cities with the lowest JSA claimant count and the only city in the north of England to rank in the top ten for low levels of residents with no formal qualifications. But it’s brilliant and I’m really enjoying myself.”
“Every day is different,” says Jordan, 18, as he described his role at one of the biggest chocolate providers in the world. “There could be breakdowns with the machinery or project work that needs completing. It’s great to get hands on and develop my skills.” Jordan is currently mid-way through his four year apprenticeship, spending his time on-site at the
32
Jordan’s engineering apprenticeship consists of two years of mechanical training, followed by two years on electrical systems. During that time he will not only acquire invaluable experience as a technician, earning an actual wage, but also gain highly regarded qualifications. “I can’t express how much I would recommend taking the apprenticeship route to get into work. Nestlé has an incredible programme – probably one of the best in the country. I’m often at meetings and conferences about apprenticeships and compared with other leading companies Nestlé’s programme is up at the top.” So what does the future hold for Jordan once he completes his apprenticeship? “I’ll be 20 when I finish and I’ll already have four years of experience and all the qualifications I’ll need. It won’t take long until I’m running things around here!” n Find out more about Nestlé apprenticeships at www.nestlecareers.co.uk
Apprenti-boost Nestlé isn’t the only employer to offer fantastic apprenticeship opportunities. City of York Council has happily announced that the Leeds City Region Partnership, which York is a part of, has successfully secured £4.6m to support apprenticeships in the region. York will become home to one of eight ‘Apprenticeship Hubs’ where small businesses will be helped and encouraged to employ young people as apprentices. Council Leader James Alexander is delighted with the news. “Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to gain access to a wide range of professions,” says James, “but everyone benefits as every £1 invested in apprenticeships generates £18 back to the economy.” n Businesses who would like to discuss taking on apprentices can find out more at www. yorkmeansbusiness.com or call 07769 640241.
Council move You might have heard (or indeed seen) that the brand spanking new City of York Council offices on Station Rise are just about ready to open their doors to customers. The old offices on St. Leonard’s Place have now closed and until all departments are relocated to the new purpose built offices, there may be some disruption to normal reception services. During the moving period the Parking Services department will be located in Library Square, along with Council Tax and Housing. The ground floor of York Explore Library, right next door, will temporarily house Planning, Waste and Recycling and other useful services. However, whatever your enquiry, the number to call is still 551550.
All aboard the Partnership Partners Group, the York PR and marketing communications agency, have a lot to shout about this year. Not only will the company celebrate their 25th year of business but they have also recently won four high profile internet clients. Partners have built websites for Trustspan Timber Engineering based at Murton, and Silvery Tweed Cereals, a processing business in Berwick-upon Tweed. They have also worked on creating a brand identity for Fortitude Environmental, a specialist waste treatment company in Leeds, and are redeveloping a website for racehorse training yard Foulrice Park Racing. We don’t know that much about sport – the closest we get to exercise is the daily boxing over the biscuit tin at elevenses – but luckily we know a bloke who does. He tells us about the hottest news in the world of sport in words we can understand, and makes it funny too! Thank you, Dan Tait – here is his column… Ball boy gate Did you hear about Chelsea’s Eden Hazard booting possibly the oldest looking ball boy ever? Naturally, in the same situation Fernando Torres would have tried to kick him and miss, and given the boy was around work experience age he was lucky Ashley Cole didn’t shoot him with an air rifle. It was a far cry from when I was a ball boy for York City, which I was on four occasions (resulting in four wins, I might add). I never lay on top of the ball to time waste, but that was mainly because I could barely move, sporting the one-size-fits-all attire that made a little lad like me to look like I was wearing Rick Waller’s jogging gear, or like I was Tom Hanks at the end of the film Big. Ball boys at Bootham Crescent have become trendier in recent years, and no doubt the ones at York City’s March home games will look more the part than I did. That’s entertainment One of the biggest sporting events on the calendar so far has been the Super Bowl in America, which lasted some four hours and boasted half time entertainment from the reformed Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé. Some people have suggested that our FA Cup could learn a lot from the added entertainment value. It’s an argument that becomes a bit irrelevant when you see our equivalent reformed pop acts are the likes of Atomic Kitten and Steps. I think we would all prefer miming in this situation.
Pete Goddrick is one of those rare breeds of people; an unsung hero who puts in the hours for the benefit of others. Some 51 years he has been involved in boxing in York one way or another, the only remaining original member of the York City Boxing Club. He currently heads up the newly refurbished York Masters Boxing gym at Layerthorpe, which has recently had a revamp, and trains semi professional boxers. The gym represents the European Boxing Federation (EBF) that gives the opportunity of boxing competitively for everybody, and there is a positive atmosphere present in the gym that serves people from all different disciplines and backgrounds, something that Pete Goddrick is proud of. We think he deserves a medal.
Dummies’ guide to: The Tour de France will come to York in 2014 – but just how does it all work? The TdF is a multiple stage bicycle race that covers about 3200 kilometres, has 21 race days and two rest days. There are usually between 20 and 22 teams that take part, with nine riders in each team. Riders are judged by the time they take throughout the race, though there can be time deductions for finishing well in a daily stage or passing a certain checkpoint first. It’s even possible to win the whole thing without actually winning a stage – this has happened six times. Yep, confusing.
The race was dreamt up by Géo Lefèvre, journalist for L’Auto magazine, in the early 20th century as a way to promote sales of the mag. On 1st July 1903, 60 bikers set out from Montgeron for the six stage race, and only 21 made it to the end. Our Gini isn’t planning any bike-related promotions of this mag though, thank God. Want to enter? You’ll need to be an international U.C.I. road racing licence holder and to be selected by a team that has been invited to attend. Try to get yourself into a U.C.I. ProTour team. Failing that, City of York Council is looking for cycling leaders – check out our Join the Club section for details!

Gadgets are the future, and what is more futuristic than getting technology to do all the hard work for you? We take a look at some fancy kit that will drag your home into the 21st century. Scholl X-Pop Massager: Of course, we are all waiting for the day when they invent a robot with special Swedish massaging skills. Until that day we will have to settle for the X-Pop Massager – which, according to Nic, is just as good. This cool-looking cushion straps to your office chair and gently kneads and warms your lower back. Nic found it extremely relaxing as the vibrations shook away all her daily stresses. The rest of us found it extremely funny hearing the massager groan as Nic shifted in her chair. It sounded like trumps. £29.99 www.boots.com Gadget rating 8/10. Smartbel: Annoying, isn’t it? Someone’s at the door, ringing the bell, and you’re at the other end of the back garden. The Smartbel is doorbell with a difference. It connects to your home’s WiFi network and sends a message to your phone alerting you to the visitor, no matter where you are. In fact, thanks to the Smartbel’s built-in camera and microphone, you can even chat to the person at your door from the other side of the world. To tell them you’re out. £129.99 www.smartbel.co.uk Gadget rating 8/10.

Three-way Object Locator: We’ve all heard of the key finder – that handy gadget that attaches to your keys and beeps when you lose them. These days we have so much more stuff that tends to get lost, be it our phones, mp3 players or wallet. The Threeway Object locator saves you having to search for everything, as it includes three colour-coordinated receivers which will make different sounds when you press the appropriate button on the transmitter. Handy for first-time parents as well. Tee hee. £14.95 www.gadgets.co.uk Gadget rating 9/10.
Rootmetrics. Find out if your mobile network operator has good signal in any particular area, and upload the results to the main website, benefitting others. Zapper. Find out what other apps and functions are draining your phone’s battery and shut them down by zapping them. Minesweeper. The classic PC game that we have all wasted hours of work time on now gets a shiny new makeover. Vine. Create short, looping videos for your family and friends to see, in a fun and simple way. Upload the results quickly to Facebook and Twitter. The Video Cookbook. Access hundreds of easy to follow recipes and cooking advice, on this app made by food industry professionals.

iRobot Roomba 770 Vacuum Cleaner. Welcome to the future. It’s finally here, a time when robots do all the household chores and service our every need. The Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner crawls about your living room carpet, guided by sensors, and sucks up all the bits and bobs. We found that Robert (which is what we named ours) gave a very thorough clean to the office carpets, no doubt aided by the steadily pace the robot takes, allowing more dust to be collected. Included with the vacuum cleaner is a remote control, allowing you take control of the robot, just in case it misses the odd patch of biscuit crumbs. Also included is a charging dock, which, amazingly, the robot will find all by itself when the battery is low. Check out Howard’s column in the Family section to see what his toddler daughter made of it. £449.99 www.irobot.com Gadget rating 9/10.
Brush Robot. Of course, not all household robots cost hundreds of pounds and are filled with hi-tech cleverness. The Brush Robot, part of the Science Museum’s fun range of toys, is a great way for kids to learn the basics of robots as they build their own mechanical cleaning pal. The included motor vibrates and the robot waddles along atop a brush. £12.99 Available from Anti-Gravity, Colliergate. Gadget Rating 7/10.

We love special cars in movies, those that are like characers in their own right. But what happens to film cars after the cameras stop rolling? Here are a few of our favourites.
KITT. Before David Hasslehoff ran along beaches in slow motion with Pamela Anderson, he starred in a TV show which featured bumpers of a different kind. Knight Rider, which was part sci-fi, part modern take on The Lone Ranger, wowed audiences in the early 1980s, mostly due to the talking, jumping, zooming super car, KITT (or Knight Industries Two Thousand). The car, which was a modified Pontiac Trans Am, sold on eBay in 2008 for £14,000 but lacked some of the features from the show. Such as the artificially intelligent computer complete with English accent. We wish TV was real life.
Batmobile. Na-na na-na na-na na-na Batman! Before Christian Bale’s caped crusader battled crime in a big black tank, Batsie rode in something a little more pedestrian. The original batmobile, driven by Adam West in the tongue-in-cheek TV series of the 1960s, was recently sold at auction for a staggering £2.6 million. George Barris, who in 1966 paid just one dollar for the car he would modify into the sleek black hero wagon, is said to be rejoicing after the sale. The car, which is still road legal, features lasers, a Batphone and a Bat-ering ram. The winning bidder was Rick Champagne, a car collector from Arizona. Let’s hope that as he drives it home, it doesn’t get a flat bat-tery.

DeLorean. How do you travel through time? Easy, you stick a flux capacitor in an Irish sports car and then accelerate to 88mph. Then kiss your mum. We all learnt that from the 1985 film Back to the Future, in which Michael J. Fox travelled back in time to the 1950s. The car he did it in had a less than exciting life after production finished, being parked at the old props section of Universal Studios for years. In fact, a local homeless man even slept in the car for a while. It was acquired by the Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s Foundation in 2011 and raised £400,000 at auction.

fine for the filmmakers for blocking the flow of traffic. When the car was brought back for the sequel, Ghostbusters 2, the black smoke that spilled from the battered vehicle was actually real. After being restored to its former glory, Ecto-1 was sold on eBay in 2009 for £30,000.
Car maintenance tips:
dealing with scratches
• Using 2000-grit sandpaper gently sand in the direction of the scratch, applying light to medium pressure. Rinse with water every few seconds. • Apply a rubbing compound to the scratch - there are lots of different brands available. Make sure you get enough to cover the entire area of the scratch. Apply it liberally, as if you are painting it on. • While it is switched off, use a buffer to spread the compound smoothly

around the scratch. • Switch the buffer on to the lowest setting and gently move it around the scratch. Never use the edge of the buffer – make sure the whole surface of the pad is in contact with the car. • Increasing the speed of the buffer, move it from side to side along the length of the scratch until the area you sanded is less dull. • Wash the whole area then apply a coat of wax. All done. If you don’t feel confident enough there are mechanics on these pages who can help!

• Wash and dry the area around the scratch thoroughly. Dirt can actually cause more damage during the repair.

Mother’s Day gifts should be all about celebrating the wonderful woman who has given you so much and there is no better way to show your appreciation than with a bit of pampering. Our expert from Kuki is here to help! Q. As a son I’m really not confident what

treatment my mum would prefer, but she has tonnes of lotions so I know beauty treatments are of interest! A. Not all women want to get undressed for a massage, and alternative treatments may not appeal to everyone. However, the majority of women will take care of their facial skin with cleansers and moisturisers, so a customised Dermalogica facial is an ideal choice. The therapist will decide the perfect face treatment on the day using the latest face mapping technology to analyse your mum’s skin. Any son would be flavour of the month with this, but if you’re really not sure buy a gift voucher for your mum to choose her own treatment.
and jokes about having something done. I know she really would like to have an antiageing treatment but I don’t want to suggest anything permanent or too expensive, or offend her. A. There is a variety of anti-ageing packages and non-surgical procedures available. A great treatment is an ‘Agera Skin Peel’ and it doesn’t suggest anti-aging in the title so shouldn’t offend! It is a unique treatment that significantly stimulates the fibroblasts deep within the skin to produce new collagen and elastin. After one session your mum‘s skin will look clearer, smoother and brighter and she’ll thank you for it.
would like to buy a reasonably priced treat too. A. For an immediately noticeable look your mum can show off, choose a simple file and nail polish. If like most mums she leads a hectic life, than Shellac nails are a great alternative. Shellac combines the ease of polish with the permanence of gels. It was developed and tested to withstand daily wear with no chipping, and they last around 14 days! For personal and professional advice contact KUKI HAIR & BEAUTY SPA 01904 659007. mess it up: Messy ballerina buns, low ponytails and tousled locks – the type that actually don’t take you an hour in front of the mirror to achieve – are in. Hurrah! Any trend that does us a favour by letting us have an extra 15 minutes in bed, and still be fashionable, is a trend worth fighting for in our book. Long live the messy do.
torn on the platform: We’ve always been in two minds about platform shoes. Yes, they do add extra inches to our height, and yes, they do so without leaving our feet cut to shreds. However, we have discovered a down side – they make our legs look fat. Without a slimline heel, something wrong happens to the width of our calves. And anyway, we’re not in the 1970s any more.
candy sweet: How do you dress your phone? Let’s face it – they are glued to our hands for about 95% of our waking hours, so they need to look good. Cases have become ever more extravagant, and we’re big fans of designs by one local lass. Francesca McCarthy, owner of DollyMix&CandyKiss, makes phone covers and accessories that are just gorgeous. Seriously, you couldn’t get any more girly. Bejeweled and beglittered, the cases are customized to your specifications, and examples on the website include personal touches such as the Barbie logo and a mini Eiffel Tower, amidst pink pearls and flowers. We adore them! Head to her website to take a look for yourself: www.dollymixandcandykiss.co.uk

take a dip: We suspected that the dip dye trend wouldn’t last long – it just looks like you’ve forgotten to do your roots. Though unluckily for our Nic, she’d just about grown her roots to a length where she could get away with the ‘it’s dip dyed’ excuse, and now it’s gone out of fashion. Better get to the hairdressers…
There’s no feeling like finding a gem of a jacket or a perfect pair of trousers, when all you have to do is give up something you no longer want anyway. It almost feels like cheating. That’s why we’re so chuffed that the lovely folk at Lush on Coney Street are holding York’s Big Clothes Swap on 19th March from 6.30-7.30pm. It works as a swapping boutique, where keen fashionistas can take clothes they’re fallen out of love with to the store during the week before the event in exchange for tokens. Then, you can have a rummage through the racks on the evening to find some lovely new-to-you items. Entry costs £2, with all proceeds going to charity. Two lucky readers will win free entry plus two tokens each – to enter answ er the following question: What is the name of the event? SImply email your answer to info@yourlocallink.co.uk or post it to the address on page five, to reach us by 12th March.

Nail art special
Dark Arts nail art: This kit has everything you need to create dazzling effects on your talons: a range of varnishes, clever tools such as dotting sticks and tiny tweezers, pretty gems, and instructions on different designs. To get your nails looking as good as the ones as the photo takes a fair bit of preparation, but we reckon it’s the perfect way to spend a girly night in. Plus, if you’re completely useless with a pot of polish, you can cheat with the nail wraps! This kit makes a gorgeous gift too. n £25 Front Cover Cosmetics www.frontcovercosmetics.com MUA Fur Effect Nails: Furry nails? Yep, you heard right. All you have to do is paint your nails with clear varnish, then dip them into this powdery stuff while they’re still wet. It takes a few attempts to get your whole nail covered, but there are videos that talk you through it on YouTube. The end result is brightly coloured fluffy nails (no surprises there), and the coverage is good – we were particularly surprised with the staying power, though we don’t recommend plunging your hands into a washing up bowl while wearing it. We think this is a great trend for young nailistas. n £3 Superdrug www.superdrug.com

“You’ve got to want to quit.” 13th March is No Smoking Day. We asked our financial femme fatal Helen, an ex-smoker herself, how she managed to kick the habit. “I had a reason to stop. I’d decided to run in the Race 4 Life and so needed to improve my fitness. I joined an NHS group, and by working with the counsellors worked out what my routine of smoking was. I discovered that for me it was all about having something to do with my hands, so we worked at giving me something else to fiddle with and to break the associations I had with smoking. It took just three weeks to quit. I completed Race 4 Life, and even went on to do the following two! Above all, I think to be able to do it you’ve got to really want to quit.” Helen, like a lot of us in the office, is now in training for the Jane Tomlinson 10K in the summer. n For help and advice with quitting, visit www.smokefree.nhs.uk

On yer bike! York is all about the saddle this month… Don’t mess with him, he’s a cycle-path This month you’ll see a few more bikes on the roads, whizzing to and from schools. That’s because Sutrans, the charity that encourages people to travel by foot, bike or public transport, have launched The Big Pedal – a whole month of cycling fun and challenges. To get set, here are some top cycle safety tips courtesy of iTravel York. • Cycle at a steady pace about one metre away from the kerb. • Be predictable and confident on the road so that all road users are aware of you. • Be heard. Use your bell to let other road users and pedestrians know that you're approaching. • Make eye contact with other road users at junctions and crossings. Make sure that they've seen you. n Find out more about cycling safety at www.itravelyork.info
Going for the century Children’s charity Action Medical Research are looking for people to join their popular York 100 bike ride this summer. On 18th August cyclists will have a choice of two routes; the Classic of around 68 miles, and the Champion at a whopping 102 miles. Both take in some stunning Yorkshire scenery including the Wolds and the Howardian Hills and the brave pedalers will be raising money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. n Visit www.action.org.uk/york100
Free-cycle If you love your bike, but the thought of cycling around the city is a little daunting, then never fear – City of York Council is here. The Active Living team are offering free cycling training sessions for adult beginners and those wanting to get back in the saddle. The next class will take place on 13th March at Dunnington Sports Club on Common Road. There are two levels of training: one for beginners who have never learned to ride and another for people who want to improve their cycling skills. n To find out more call 553377.

No, they are not a group training to climb Mount Everest, nor have they lost their skis – they’re Nordic Walking. Nordic Walking is a craze that is sweeping the nation, and it’s no surprise. Now’s your chance to get involved in the City of York Council’s programme of Health Walks and Guided Rides. The York Health Walks scheme, part of the national Walking for Health programme, requires Volunteer Walk Leaders to take the people of York (well, not all of them all at once) on gentle walks, suitable for all ages and abilities. Meanwhile, Volunteer Ride Supporters lead cycle rides around the city during spring, summer and autumn, for people who are new to cycling or need to brush up their skills. Full training and support is provided for both roles, and the commitment required from volunteers is flexible. The good life
Check it out
Plenty of us feel a bit bloated every now and again, or lose our appetite – but did you know that if you notice these symptoms, they could be a sign of ovarian cancer? Doctors in the Vale of York are urging women to get clued up on the symptoms as part of the ‘Be Clear on Ovarian Cancer’ campaign. The illness is the fifth most common cancer that affects women, and is more common in ladies over the age of 50 who have been through the menopause. Dr Joan Meakins, GP at Rawcliffe Surgery, Clifton, is a spokesperson for the campaign. She says that it’s vital to catch the disease early. “If ovarian cancer is diagnosed early, the outcome for many patients is good. However, it can be difficult to spot, as symptoms are similar to other, more common conditions. Contrary to popular belief, a smear test for cervical cancer will not detect ovarian cancer either. It's really
important to recognise the symptoms, and get to know your own body. If these symptoms are not normal for you, a visit to your doctor could save your life.” n Call the Communications Team for Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group on 0300 303 8394.
The symptoms: If you suffer from bloating a lot of the time (most days, for longer than three weeks), see your GP as soon as possible. You should also make an appointment if you have the following symptoms: 3 Pelvic and abdominal (lower stomach) pain 3 Needing to pee urgently or more often 3 Struggling to eat and feeling full quickly

Local couple Brydie and Dez Ward loved the Herbal Life plan so much they decided to spread the word! Herbal Life was set up in 1980 by Mark Hughes, who wanted to create healthy, nutritious products for a weight loss plan that would get great results in a safe way. Now, in 2013, it’s a global network. There’s a huge range on offer, including products for sporty types – footballer Messi is a big fan – and weight loss meal replacement shakes. “The most important point is that the shakes are packed with 23 vitamins and minerals, so they’re like a super healthy meal in a glass,” says Dez. “The focus is on the nutrition, so weight loss is just a byproduct.” Brydie says, “We also offer support to customers, and can come to your home to help with weigh-ins and offer advice and tips, as we’ve been there ourselves and know how it all works.” n For more details, call 07725 148863 or visit www.h-life.co.uk

The Fab Follicle Four Great names in the hair world have joined together in the fight against hair loss. Brothers Gary and Ben Auker founded the successful York Laser Clinic two years ago. This year, they both decided to take the clinic to a higher level by inviting father and son duo David and Ross Charles to join them. Trichologist David Charles has 40 years’ experience in the hair industry. After training in Paris with Doctor Gerard Choquet, he was invited to join the most elite team of Microscopists in dermo-trichology. Meanwhile, son Ross is owner of Ross Charles Hairdressing in York. Well known for his creative work, after treatment he is able to cut and style hair to get the best results. “A good haircut is the icing on the cake,” says Ross. Combined, the team have many years of experience and understanding of different causes of hair loss; they work together using their skills to assess a bespoke course of treatment for sufferers using a laser and topical treatments. This means that now, patients have a far better chance of saving existing hair or growing new hair, because of the options offered to them based on their individual needs. The results can be remarkable. After a free consultation, they offer a choice of payment methods, making laser hair loss therapy affordable. n Call Mr David Charles 07775 567110. The Hospitium, the beautiful medieval building amidst the pretty surroundings of the Museum Gardens, is always a popular venue for brides and grooms to be. But it seems that York’s betrothed are a little superstitious, as tradionally the least popular dates are Friday 13th of September and December, and Saturday 13th in April and July – with couples fearful of what may be an unlucky day to get married. York Museum Trust, who operate the Hospitium, have decided to act against superstition and are offering a fantastic deal on these dates. For just £1313.13 the building can be yours on these days, a massive saving for this incredible venue. Will this be your lucky day? n Call 687671

Darn, just as we’d finally perfected our sugarcraft peonies, along comes a new trend for naked cakes. The un-iced, unfussy wedding cakes are basically just three sponges stacked on top of each other, dredged with a little icing sugar and garnished with fresh fruit and flowers. They fit perfectly with the new rustic style, and they’re also great for brides on a budget. But the icing is the best bit!
It’s time to ban the bunting, people! This year’s smartest venues are strung with colourful paper pom poms, like those 1970s Christmas decorations your nan used to put up in her living room. It was cute while it lasted, but if we see one more mismatched cup and saucer on a bridal table setting, we will actually scream. Vintage literally is old hat. The smart boho brides are going for rustic luxe instead, with outdoor barn venues, simple flowers, naked cakes (see opposite) and even fancy wellies for wet days. Give them a break, brides! They love you, they’re there for you, they even wore a pink bunny costume for your hen night. Don’t put them through the further humiliation of dressing them in identical pink taffeta. These days smart brides are allowing their bridesmaid to choose their own dress in a particular colour theme, or picking a style of dress and letting the bridesmaids choose their own colour. With bridesmaids often paying for their own dresses these days, it makes sense to let them have something they can wear afterwards.
Who wants to do a quiz about the bride and groom? We’ve come to celebrate your wedding, not take part in an episode of Pointless. PET TALK in association with MINSTER VETS
Q. Should I be giving my
Q. Would you recommend making our own food mix
horse joint supplements?
for our dog from meat and vegetables? What are the basic ingredients that we’d need to include?
Joint supplements contain substances which occur naturally in the body that can aid in cartilage production as well as help improve mobility and flexibility. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of joint disease, causing restricted movement and joint pain which can result in lameness. A visit to your vet should be arranged if you see signs of stiffness or lameness so that an examination can be carried out and the underlying cause determined. Joint supplements can then be a beneficial part of treatment. Studies have shown that joint supplements can increase the range of joint motion and increase stride length, and therefore improve performance. By offering symptomatic relief to horses and alleviating symptoms of degenerative disease, welfare is also improved. If you have an aged horse showing stiffness, a horse in regular competition or hard training or one that has had previous injury or surgery, then joint supplementation should definitely be considered. However, it is essential to remember that these are often only an aid to treatment and veterinary advice should be sought first to diagnose the primary problem.
Pet owners are more likely to treat their animals and will develop their own feeding routine in line with their pet’s likes and dislikes. Some people may be swayed to home diets due to intolerances that their pet may have, however I would advise you to speak to your vet as there are lots of specific requirements that need to be considered, such as animals that are growing, weight control and pets that are senior. A variety of meat, vegetables, cereals and so on should be used with home cooked meals along with suitable supplements for the specific needs of the pet. Some animals need specific nutrients in their diets for day-to-day living, and removing them from their food may result in illness. However, too much of certain additives can also cause illness. Most commercially prepared foods are made for each life stage, and your vet may be able to offer a range of prescription diets that may also suit your pet’s needs, and in the long term may be cheaper that making a home diet.
Q. Is it normal for my kitten to have a lump after her first lot of jabs? It¹s about the size of a hazelnut.
For a garden full of life and colour...
It can be quite normal for any kitten or puppy to get a reactive lump after having an injection. I would advise you speak to your vet so that they are aware of this. If any vomiting or diarrhea develops then I would advise an appointment with your vet.

See what we thought about the

Robots suck
robot had stopped, Ava declared, “Wobot a girl.” I pointed out that it wasn’t a good idea to reinforce gender stereotypes.
If you’ve already seen the Gadget Guide this month, you’ll know that we were sent a robotic vacuum cleaner to test. I was extremely excited about this, having spent most of my childhood dreaming about hanging out with the Terminator. In the dream, we were friends and I’d get him to go to school for me, taking tests in my place. If anyone challenged him about this he would, appropriately, terminate them. So it was with enthusiasm bubbling over that I took the robot vacuum cleaner home – mostly to see what my two year old daughter made of it.
My replacement After the robot had dutifully cleaned the entire downstairs, it toddled back to its charging station, eerily plugging itself in. It waited there, blank black eye staring at me like Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I worried that it might be plotting to terminate me at some point, replace me and seduce my wife. But Ava was less concerned. She lay down next to it, saying, “I stwoke the wobot,” which she did before giving it a kiss. Later that night, I’m sure I heard her call it “New daddy.”
Future proof I wanted to introduce her to the future – to the start of an age when robots will do all the housework. And also to show my wife that she can be replaced. Tee hee. Unfortunately, I misjudged the initial meeting, practically throwing the robot at her screaming, “Look Ava, Look! A robot!” The churning of the machine’s brushes and the beeps of its simple mechanical mind terrified her, and she ran behind my wife crying, “No wobot! Wobot back in box!” Wife was not pleased. So we (wife) decided the robot should go to sleep for a while, and I put it on charge in the hallway
in the gadget guide.
so Ava could get used to its presence. The very next day her first words, which devastated my unconscious mind at half six in the morning, were a demand to “See wobot. See wobot now.” So I set it going on the living room carpet with Ava watching, albeit cautiously, from behind the door. Once the room had been sucked clean and the
Will technology like this be common place when Ava is older? Will the robot that she brings home to her children (probably with less terrifying enthusiasm) be able to cook the dinner and do the dishes, as well as hoover up? Will Ava be having full blown philosophical debates with her cyborg friends in 30 years’ time? I asked the vacuum cleaner what it thought about existentialism. It answered, “EMPTY DUST COMPARTMENT.” Deep.

On 23rd and 24th March the NRM will host Robots Live! Not satisfied with a robot that can do the hoovering, I wanted to modify it to Robot Wars standards. Growing up, I loved the BBC show where radio controlled monsters did battle and, in my continuing struggle to come up with interesting TV show pitches, I wondered what it be like if such a robot was to take on a teething toddler. I planned to add a home-made flame thrower to the robot vacuum cleaner, using a can of Lynx deodorant and an oven lighter. I’d then give Ava the oven gloves and told her there was chocolate inside the robot. And also that it said she was stupid. My plan was to let them duke it out on the drive and charge the neighbours to watch. My wife said no. Gutted. I’ll just go to the show instead. Visit www.nrm.org.uk
Playground, revisited Hopscotch: The first player tosses a stone into the first square. They must hop into each square until they get to the end and then turn around and hop back. They must miss out the square that the stone is in, hopping over it. The stone is then thrown into the next square. If their stone does not land on the next consecutive square, or if they make a mistake while hopping, they are out. The winner is the first person to successfully complete all ten turns. Not just for the girls, hopscotch is enjoyed around the world.

You’ll remember that in our January issue we announced that we’ll be publishing our favourite stories from the competition we ran last year as an ebook – well, it’s ready! The collection features 14 terrific tales by you, the people of York, that evoke all manner of reactions – from funny to scary, and intriguing to touching, the stories cover a wide spectrum of genres and topics. There are surprising twists galore, too! We see York at different stages through its history – from medieval times through to the
future – and follow a variety of both loveable and loathsome characters. The stories are all beautifully illustrated by local artist Tony Brook, and have Harry Gration’s seal of approval. Proceeds from the sale of the anthology will go to wonderful local charity S.N.A.P.P.Y., who provide activities and play provision for children and young people with special needs. You do the mathS It’s World Maths Day on 6th March. If that statement is enough to spread fear and confusion down your child’s spine, worry not – these numbers look pretty good. Leading education provider Kumon fully support the global initiative, in which children across the world come together to focus on the importance of maths and to increase the speed of their mental arithmetic. The Kumon Centre in Fulford celebrated its 10th year of offering local children support with their maths and English studies. Noses are red… We can’t wait for Red Nose Day, taking place on 15th March. Check out these fun ways to raise funds.
Mum’s the word
Mothering Sunday might have its origins in visiting your ‘mother’ church, but these days we prefer to have a bit more fun with the old gal. Here are some ideas that won’t cost a mother’s ransom. B&B. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Breakfast in bed is the classic way to show your mum you love her, and it doesn’t have to be a slap up, full English affair. A couple of toasted croissants and coffee will always solicit a smile. No dosh? Don’t worry – simply get creative. You’re mum will love something hand-made, particularly if it tugs at her heart strings. Techheads could make a DVD slideshow of photos of themselves and siblings throughout the years, or what about a photo collage?
Tea for two. How about a lovely jaunt into town for elevenses? A pot of tea and a few cakes will see dear mum happy and very proud of her little munchkin (you). Usually a lot cheaper than going out for afternoon tea, elevenses can be combined with an amble about the city.
Musical laughter The University of York is doing its bit for Comic Relief this month by inviting members of the public to an afternoon of music on Red Nose Day. In the run up to Easter, we become egg-sperts and look at different ways to decorate eggs. Painting bunnies and chicks? Pah, we’re more adventurous than that. Egg-xactly. Thread wrapped. Paint the egg a bold pastel colour and then, with a very light coating of PVA glue, wrap a length of contrasting thread around.

Glitter. Dip the egg in glue, sprinkle on glitter or sand, then paint in a bright colour. Alternatively, cover the whole surface in coloured glitter glue. Collage eggs. Collect images of Easter, or even postage stamps from the cards you receive, and stick them onto painted eggs. Dab on some PVA and leave to dry.
Weed a storwy We all love a good story. Excitement, adventure, mystery – and that’s just from Spot’s New Ball. It’s no surprise then that babies love stories too, especially when read to them by their mummy or daddy. Susan Stern, a voice coach working at the York Theatre Royal, knows this to be true and also that being read to can be massively important for language development. Starting in March, you and your under 12 month old baby are invited to join the Parent and Baby Book Club at the theatre, where together, through play and stories, your child will develop a love of reading. The club takes place on 14th, 21st and 28th of March, at 10.30am.

this is
science!
To celebrate National Science and Engineering Week (15th24th March) we don our lab coats and get experimenting. Here are some you can try at home. Bear in mind, you might need to live in a cathedral for the first one, or at least have high ceilings. Actually, best to go outside. Coke and Mentos Fountain. Open a two litre bottle of Diet Coke. Using a cardboard tube as a funnel, drop in an entire pocket of Mentos mints. Now stand back. A fountain of foam will erupt from the bottle, sometimes as high as 16 feet! This is because of a process called nucleation, where the carbon dioxide in the Coke is attracted to the Mentos. That creates so much pressure that the drink goes flying. Plastic Milk. Heat a cup of milk on the hob, but don’t let it boil. Pour the hot milk into a bowl and add four teaspoons of white vinegar. Stir the mixture for about a minute and then stain through a sieve. Left behind in the sieve should be a few lumpy blobs. When cool press the blobs together into any shape you want and leave to
harden for a few days. You’ve just made casein, which occurs when the protein in milk meets the acid in vinegar. Lava Lamp. Fill an empty plastic bottle about a fifth of the way up with water. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it’s almost full. Wait a few minutes for the water and oil to separate. Add a few drops of food colouring. This will sink to colour the water at the bottom. Drop half an Alka-Seltzer tablet into the mixture. This will also sink and start to fizz, pushing up the coloured water through the oil – just a like a real lava lamp. This works because of intermolecular polarity (a good term to use at parties) meaning that oil and water molecules don’t get on and never mix.

Full steam ahead Public transport users may find themselves getting around York and its surrounding villages a lot quicker in future, after a meeting was held last month to discuss the potential re-opening of Haxby Railway Station. The meeting, which took place at Wigginton Recreation Hall, was the first in a campaign run by Railfuture Yorkshire, a group who aim to promote better railway services and transport links for passengers and freight. The campaign was not the first of its kind for Haxby, following initial plans in 2010 which were abandoned after a withdrawal of funds. Railfuture hope to see the £7.4m plans go ahead, and say the station would “Bring some relief to Haxby’s heavily congested road network.”

Children these days, eh? You’d be forgiven for thinking all they want to do is get on the X Factor – there’s more to stage presence than just belting out ballads, kids! It’s a notion that concerned performer and teacher Rosanna Johnson, so much so she established Charcoal Children’s Physical Theatre Workshops. She believes that the body has enormous expressive capabilities, which can be lost if we only pay attention to the words when performing. Rosanna offers performance workshops for children that are unlike any others, placing emphasis on physicality, collaboration and having lots of fun. There is also a crafty aspect, with life drawing creating a hands-on approach that inspires children to take an active interest in performance art, as a spectator, director, performer and artist. The winners, who were al aged five to 14, included Daniel Saywell who helped run art exhibitions, Ben Robinson who organised an after school table tennis club and Ruth Hindle who operates a book club. Transform your conservatory with a Guardian Roof The Guardian Warm Roof System is the biggest revelation to hit the home improvement market in the last ten years. You can now change your old conservatory roof for a new Guardian Roof and effectively turn your old conservatory into a new extension that can be used all year round. The complete changeover takes around three to four days with very minimal disruption to your household. The Roof System is designed to replace the existing glass or polycarbonate roof of a conservatory while retaining the original windows, doors, frames and walls. At the same time providing substantial energy cost savings. Fully tested and approved to all thermal and structural standards, the Guardian system is a high performance insulated roof system comprising of a pre-engineered lightweight frame, two layers of rigid insulation board, internal insulated plasterboard, exterior grade plywood, vapour membrane and a choice of external tile finishes.

Guardian roof conversion would be exempt if it was at ground level, does not exceed 30m2 floor area, be thermally separated from the building it is attached to, have an independent heating system from the main building and have glazing that meets Part N in the critical zones. However, Building Control approval should always be sought. But, with Guardian systems being LABC certified, this process should proceed without complication. The Guardian Warm Roof Conversion System is fully compliant for use in a conventional situation such as an extension and has been fully approved by LABC for use as a full replacement conservatory roof. With Building Control approval, Guardian high performance insulated roof conversions may allow the removal of the wall between the house and the conservatory, offering the flexibility to extend and enlarge an existing kitchen, living room or bedroom. what’s hot
and what’s not
We’ve got the lowdown on what the well-dressed home is wearing...
Hot...
chalk it up: Seeing as we’re easily bored, we reckon blackboard paint is the way forward. That way, we can create a pretty new picture whenever we feel like it, or just use it to gently remind our families to buy milk in large neon lettering. Our Howard has a patch of his living room painted with blackboard paint, and littl’un Ava loves it. Her favourite thing to draw is ‘pengins’. Awww. We reckon we might end up doodling something similar, but just without the ‘pen’ bit. £5.95 Wilkinsons www.wilkinsonplus.com
68
Brick by brick: Nowt says chic like a bit of exposed brickwork, especially with a splash of cream paint or a classy design (we’re thinking oldfashioned signs like the Bile Beans one on Lord Mayor’s Walk rather than full on neon grafitti – though maybe not the phrase ‘Bile Beans’ now we come to think of it…) . Much as we’d love to rip the plaster off all of our walls, we reckon it might make the place a bit on the chilly side. A feature wall should be enough to make an impact. If the thought of scraping all the
plaster off fills you with dread, get a professional in – check out our classified section for a bunch of local plasterers who will be only too happy to help! Big spots: No more do we want piddly little spots – now nothing less than a polkadot on steroids will do. We love the boldness of this trend, and it looks especially good in kitchens – we adore it on crockery and accessories. This drinks tray from The Range encapsulates the trend perfectly.
Go Gallic: We’re channelling Marie Antoinette this month with our choice of furniture. The crisp white paint and the ornately carved design of the antique French style is perfect to freshen up your home in time for spring. We especially adore the look on dressing tables, with cute little drawers and large oval mirrors creating an instantly feminine feel in any boudoir. Oui, oui.

Not...
Nights in fright satin: Speaking of boudoirs, one look that makes us feel more ‘non non’ than ‘oui oui’ is the satin bed sheet. You might think that satin sheets screams romance. If you do, then please see a doctor as soon as possible and tell them you’re suffering from an affliction that leaves you with the tastes of the 1970s. Nic’s boyfriend once surprised her with some brand new satin sheets in leopard print. She thought they were wonderfully kitsch, for about five minutes, and by the morning when she awoke with the pillowcase attached to her cheek she had decided she hated them.
Pod people: We love the 1960s look, but we draw the line at hanging chairs. They might be okay for modeltypes, but we can just imagine the structural damage to the ceiling if we sat in one after a particularly biscuit-heavy day. We’ll stick to polka dots, thanks.

Mantique Roadshow If you lust after items from a by-gone era and long to fill your home with objet d’art, read on – antiques are getting a lot more playful recently. A growing trend for ‘mantiques’ is seeing collectors show particular interest in objects and curiosities that were originally designed to entertain chaps. Vintage cricket kits, writing desks with secret compartments,
beautifully crafted Victorian boys’ toys and even British fighter jet ejector seats – all are currently in big demand. The themes are of adventure and discovery, drawing upon the tradition of young rich lords touring the world prior to taking up their position as landed gentry. So how about a stuffed giraffe for the hallway?
The home office No, not a branch of the government, or a chance to work from home, but rather the place your next home might be. Dems da rules Renting? Your landlord probably gave you a set of rules, including what can be decorated and when to pay your rent. But having cooking resisted to 30 minutes only, and additional fees of £15 if dishes were not done? Sounds ridiculous, but that’s exactly what potential tenant Laura Evelyn was told when viewing a house – and given a list of 29 other harsh rules. Laura, from London, tweeted the list, which included having to ask the landlord for permission to have friends over and showering for no more than 15 minutes in the morning. Needless to say, Laura didn’t jump at the opportunity to move in.

Plus, it also makes for a very funky wall hanging… k A softer side Remove stubborn dried-on food from pots and pans with this easy tip. Simply fill with water and place a fabric softener sheet inside, allowing to soak overnight – the food will wipe right away. k Cutting-edge Save yourself hours of bother by using a tin opener to slide along and unseal that tricky plastic packaging.

Dummies’ guide to:

Electrical expert Matt Todd makes it easy to understand the latest technology. The simple fact is that as manufacturers strive to make their televisions thinner and thinner the sound has become a bit thin as well. With smaller loudspeakers comes a real lack of any bass and very little mid-range, which can mean a very lacklustre performance. The answer, simply put, is to add extra speakers to your TV, and fortunately there are now a host of neat and cost effective answers. First up, a product made by Q Acoustics. They make a speaker that literally bolts to the back of your flat screen TV. There are no unsightly wires and it sounds great thanks to a revolutionary design of flat subwoofer. The QTV is child’s play to use as it plugs straight into the headphone output of your TV, and you can use your TV remote to control it.
Secondly, there are many and various soundbars to choose from. They nearly all have a separate subwoofer to beef up the bass noise and the better ones have a wireless link between sound bar and sub so there’s no need for a cable strung out across the room. If you match up the soundbar make with that of your TV you can use one remote to operate both. Of course, for those who want to really recreate that cinema experience at home you will need more speakers – but you can hide the cables or even the speakers themselves with in-wall and in-ceiling speakers now more affordable than ever. There’s a sound solution for everyone so get down to your local electrical store and hear what you are missing out on!

Creating Co-operative Communities need you, as their next produce sharing event is set for 2nd March, this time with an emphasis on sharing seeds. Interested in encouraging more locally grown food, CCC believe in a better use of resources and in promoting a lower carbon community. All are welcome along, from 10.30-11.30am. n Call 760659.

Jane Thurlow of York Organic Gardeners Association will be there to offer advice on growing fruit and vegetables. Installing specially designed panels on the walls in The Quarter will allow crops to grow, some ornamental, others edible and all available for public consumption. Makes sense. United Response, the nationwide charity that helps people with mental illnesses, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, are hoping to give their Huntington Road care home a touchy-feely new makeover. Dean Theaker of United Response is planning to create a sensory garden – a safe haven of interesting and simulating plants and objects – for the benefit of their autistic residents. He is asking for people to donate whatever they can to make the project become a reality – from spades and topsoil, to stimulating ornaments and decorations to hang from trees. n If you have something to give, call Dean on 07876 502274.
Garden Watch – March
Reclaim your garden this month –there’s a lot to see. Plants. Snowdrops. The first sign of life after the cold winter, snowdrops can sometimes appear as early as New Year’s Day. They truly come into their own in March however, with the flowers themselves popping up in white glory. Animals. Song thrush. Song thrushes begin to get noisy at this of year, with the males boasting loudly about how great they are to their prospective mates.
This particular species of garden bird is interesting as it can mimic other sounds, be they animal or human. If you hear what sounds like a telephone ringing at the top of a tree, it’s probably a song thrush. Growing Orchids If you fancy growing your own beautiful orchids then you should get to Askham Bryan College on 19th March. A practical talk entitled “Growing Orchids” will be given by Ray Creek, focusing on growing, feeding and pruning. n Call 707208.

make everything in your garden lovely with dean’s garden centre
FOCUS ON:
Patio fruit & veg
The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down. Over the last couple of years there has been a resurgence in the popularity of growing your own fruit and vegetables. By growing your own you can ensure a constant supply of fresh, tasty fruit and vegetables, and save money at the same time. You don’t need a lot of space. Staggering the sowing and planting of small batches two weeks apart ensures a regular supply, without a glut of produce all at once. Growing any of the plants below is an incredibly satisfying and rewarding experience and much easier than you may think. Varieties for limited space: Beetroot: Sow in March with 10cm (4in) spacing. The young leaves can be cooked in the same way as spinach, or in salads. Follow these with quick-growing crops of late summer salads. Carrots: Seeds can be sown from early March and small finger carrots will be ready to harvest in around eight weeks. Salad leaves: Sow from February aiming for 5cm (2in) between plants. Rocket, coriander, lettuce, chicory and spinach are tasty choices. Pick by pinching off the top few leaves, leaving a stump to re-sprout for followon crops.
Radish: Again, sown in small quantities from early March. Early sowings take around six weeks to be ready for picking, later sown batches can be harvested in as little as three weeks. Lettuces: Mini lettuces, such as Little Gem and Tom Thumb, spaced at 15cm (6in) can be planted out from March. Salad onions: Sow from February onwards, and thin out the seedlings as they grow. Pull when they get big enough. Early sown batches take around ten weeks to reach maturity, and later batches take six weeks. Spinach: Sow from February aiming for 10cm (4in) between plants. Tomatoes and peppers: These classic Mediterranean fruits look amazing in containers. They will grow fairly well outdoors – tomatoes especially – on a sunny patio or other warm sheltered site. They can be planted outdoors from early June onwards. Potatoes: Easily grow in large pots filled with compost, and are ready for harvesting around ten weeks after planting. Again by staggering planting you can ensure continuity of supply.
For the slightly larger patios, many varieties of top fruit are now grafted onto dwarf rootstocks to control their size while still giving good crops of fruit, making them ideal for container growing. Family apple trees are a great idea, consisting of three different varieties grafted on to one trunk, so allowing three different varieties in the space where traditionally only one variety was possible. Gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and blueberries can all be grown in pots, and strawberries are great in hanging baskets. Lots of varieties of herbs including parsley, mint, rosemary, sage, chives and oregano can easily be grown in pots on the patio or balcony.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…
Tomayto, tomarto
The most popular home grown crop, without a doubt, has to be the tomato. Most of us have enough space to grow a couple of plants and the smell and taste of a freshly picked tomato is one of life’s simple pleasures. John Atkinson at Brunswick has skilfully perfected the craft, and has been awarded the top prize in the prestigious Soil Association Organic Awards for the highly coveted variety ‘Brandywine’. The right conditions Tomato plants are very tender and delicate and need the right conditions if they are to grow into healthy productive plants. Early crops can be achieved with a heated glasshouse where a temperature of 15˚C can be maintained. If you have an unheated glasshouse, hold off until the weather warms up. Even then, you will need to keep an eye on night time temperatures and provide extra protection when necessary. Select a plant that is suited to the conditions it will be grown in. Some varieties have been bred for the glasshouse and others have been bred specifically to grow outside. Disease is an important factor if you are growing organically, so look out for varieties that offer good resistance.
Fertiliser and watering John grows his tomatoes in polytunnels, planted directly into soil that has been well prepared with the addition of farmyard manure. As this is not an option for most gardeners, a growbag is the best alternative. Feed once a week with an organic liquid fertiliser when the plants start to flower. Water regularly as tomatoes are thirsty plants and can dry out quickly on hot days. Irregular watering can cause fruit to rot or split prematurely.
JOBS FOR MARCH 3 Chit seed potatoes 3 Direct sow broad beans or into
9cm pots to plant out later 3 Sow glasshouse crops such
as peppers, aubergines and cucumbers 3 Plant Jerusalem artichoke tubers 3 Lift any remaining leeks and
Indoor and glasshouse: Sakura f1: An indoor cherry variety with excellent taste and colour. Diplom f1: Another one for the glasshouse with good size fruit and good disease resistance. Yellow Submarine: Yellow cocktail tomato with tasty small fruits. For growing outdoors: Koralik is ideal for growing in pots and has good blight tolerance. Gardeners Delight: Still the most popular tomato plant and has the flexibility to be grown outside or under glass.
If you don’t have a glasshouse, why not let Brunswick do the hard part? Pop by in late spring or early summer and buy a plant that’s ready to pot up and grow on.

Stately beauty Confucius, the Chinese philosopher, compared the pleasure of seeing good friends to entering a room full of fragrant orchids. It is that sense of beauty and tranquillity that the team at Burton Agnes Hall, near Driffield, are hoping to foster during the Orchid Festival. On the weekend of 2nd-3rd March, the Elizabethan Great Hall will be filled with some of nature's most intriguing flowers. There will be magnificent displays of vibrantly coloured and gently fragrant flowers as well as expert advice available should you fancy growing your own at home. Visitors can also buy plants from the widest selection in the area, and other orchid related goods, from stalls around the hall. n Visit www.burtonagnes.com
A new bloom
Aside from chucking our winter coats to the back of our wardrobes (for probably no longer than about a week), we think the best thing about springtime is the new bloom of flowers to feast our eyes on. Luckily for us, Kelk Garden Club in Driffield will showcase a fine range of floral delights at the Spring Plant Fair on 24th March. If you think you know your fuchsias from your freesias, pop along to the Driffield Showground in East Yorkshire from 9.30am3.30pm. Admission is free for little ones and there’ll also be something for canine fans with the R.S.P.C.A Fun Dog Show. n Call 01262 488530.

Who ate all the pies? It’s British Pie Week from 4th-10th March this month – celebrate by satisfying your crusty craving with this delicious steak and ale pie, topped off with a blue cheese crown. Method: Brown the meat in stages in a casserole dish with a little oil. Remove meat and then brown the onions and mushrooms. Add meat and flour and stir for one minute. Gradually add the ale and simmer. Cover and cook for two hours. Roll the pastry to the thickness of a 20p piece. Sprinkle the blue cheese over one side, fold and roll out again. Heat the oven to 200°C. Tip the steak mix into four individual pie dishes. Top with the pastry, trim the edges, brush with a beaten egg and poke a hole in the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Ingredients: 3 500g braising or stewing steak 3 Olive oil 3 Two sliced onions 3 250g halved or quartered mushrooms 3 One tbsp seasoned plain flour 3 350ml dark ale or stout 3 350g puff pastry 3 50g crumbled Stilton cheese 3 One egg, beaten
Number-crunching Talking of pie, did you also know that it’s National Pi Day on 14th March? You’ll probably remember the figure (the one that starts 3.14) from school, but did you ever love it as much as Ukranian Pi enthusiast Andrey Larionov? He’s working on a mosaic based on 100,000 of the irrational number’s infinite digits. He’s not the only fan: students in Washington created a Pi rap, a parody of Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ (In The Digits!) The mind boggles…

Some mothers do ‘ave ‘em Take the old gal out for lunch on Mothers’ Day. After all, she did carry you in her tummy for nine months. These are good places to treat her:
Mum’s the word:
Fun Mothers’ Day facts Get your mum under starter’s orders, as York Racecourse is geeing up for a Mothers’ Day to remember. She’ll be chomping at the bit to get down to the Knavesmire to enjoy a three course carvery lunch. What’s more every mum will be presented with a complimentary raceday ticket. Nay? Yep, it’s true. n Call 638971. So Mum is spending the 10th in Australia with your brother, or is with your sister who is a missionary in Somalia – never mind, cheer up. When she does manage to drag herself to York to see you, take her to The Dean Court Hotel on 28th March. They are hosting a special evening of Laurent Perrier tasting, where you and mumsie can sample the very finest in champers and wines. n Call 625082.

If your mum is a bold bird who flies in the face of tradition, maybe you should look for an alternative Mothers’ Day meal. Find their advert in the magazine, cut out the coupon and enjoy 20% off your bill. Your mum will be proud of your shrewdness. n Call 692268. Enjoy fine Italian dining in gorgeous surroundings, but book early – mothers tend to flock to this place come that special Sunday. n Call 622737.

Mothering Sunday:
A day with two origins
What are you celebrating – Mothering Sunday or Mothers’ Day? Believe it or not they are two separate holidays, with two very different beginnings. We look at the history of both. Mothering Sunday This religious festival started in Europe during the 16th century when people would return to their ‘mother’ churches – the main church or cathedral of the area. Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone ‘a-mothering’, and for servants of the Victorian gentry, this was often the only day their whole family had off together. Although many people still attend church on Mothering Sunday, the celebration has been largely superseded by…
Discover a jewel of a pub...
... just 20 mins from York
Mothers’ day The celebration that many of us will recognise today was started in 1908 by an American woman called Anna Jarvis. She held a memorial for her own mother and then petitioned to have the day declared a national holiday, for people to honour their own mothers. However, by 1914 Anna herself had already become annoyed at how commercialised the holiday had become with greeting card companies quickly jumping on the band wagon. Don’t believe us? Check out her quote opposite. As with a lot of popular American holidays, Mothers’ Day quickly spread around the world as a day to give thanks to mothers and maternal figures.

Long flared lover We chat to the incredibly lovely (seriously, nicest guy ever) Jimmy Osmond, who will be visiting York as part of the Boogie Nights tour.
What was it about Boogie Nights that made you want to return? I was in the play in 2004, so I thought it would be pretty much the same this time around, but this is more of a concert version, which is pretty cool. It’s the music that made me want to do it again. People of all age groups have come to the show, and the music gets them all rocking out. I’ve never seen such a reaction for a musical. The cool thing about it is that the show isn’t about any one artist. People just come out of there boogying. I’m excited to return to York, I love the history. I’ve been before when I was performing in the musical Chicago. I’ve been to Betty’s, and done the ghost tour, but I just love walking the streets, it’s really cool. How did your brothers get involved? They approached me actually! Jay loved the show and when he found out I was going to be in it again, he asked if he could join in. Then Merrill said “Well, I wanna play too!” The producers were really cool about it and just booked bigger places! Our role is playing some dodgy guys named The Osmonds. We’re playing in the club where Roddy, the main character, wants to try out to be the opening act. It’s pretty cool playing yourself. You’re still credited as being the youngest singer to reach number one in the UK – what was it like being on stage so young? I started at the age of three and never stopped, though I probably should have done! I didn’t know that I held
90
that record until fairly recently, when my daughter was flicking through The Guinness Book of Records and said “Daddy, is that you?” It was cool to find out that way. We never had any gold records on the wall or anything like that at our house while we were growing up. I think our parents were worried we’d end up being idiots. It was very much a team effort, so nothing was taken personally, which saved us and kept us grounded. What’s refreshing is that the cast of Boogie Nights are all really humble and lovely, I’m making some good friends. What are your most treasured memories of your time in the band? When I look back at all of the cool stuff I was allowed to do, and that I didn’t deserve – I was just a rubbish kid who came along – I think how on earth did I manage to do that? I just made the most of whatever was on my plate at the time. My family have a saying – tragedy plus time equals humour. It’s the difficult times that I cherish the most, like when we were stuck in an airport prison because we didn’t have our visas, or when we were all so ill that we threw up on the front row. There were some crazy times. I cry big tears of laughter with my brothers when we talk about it. It’s the times that are hard to get through that make you who you are. n Jimmy will appear in Boogie Nights at York Barbican on 24th March, starting at 7.30pm. A Murderous
Makeover Prebook tickets for Easter holidays and
save £6

After six months, a £2 million re-build and the donning of many thinking caps, York Dungeon will relaunch with a brand new look on 29th March. We were invited for a behind the scenes sneak preview. It’s been a long wet winter for York Dungeon – the Ouse just wouldn’t leave the poor building alone. However, instead of sitting feeling soggy and sorry for themselves, staff have worked tirelessly to create a brand new experience for visitors to enjoy when the attraction opens its doors once again this month. Chilling changes So, what can you expect? Well the sets and scripts have been given a makeover, as have the characters themselves, to make the whole experience more authentic. The old scars and boils are gone, with make up from MAC Make Up Pro and Sam Norman, Make Up Artist from film Pirates of the Caribbean. Meanwhile, a new wardrobe has been created that more accurately reflects the fashions of the time – consultants included a team from West End producer Bill Kenwright, who has worked on productions such as Scrooge. Professional writers have been working on the scripts to make them more theatrical and witty (potential lines for Dick Turpin include “Your carriage awaits me” and “Some faces just stop traffic”), and builders have been busy creating new room layouts. Rebecca Hamilton, Marketing Director for the Dungeons, says that the changes have been made in response to feedback from guests. “We know from extensive research and feedback that our guests love actors, laughter and performance, so we’ve really concentrated on polishing that for our re-opening. Visitors can expect something really quite different and very special.” Swapping floods for Fawkes But what if it floods again? Well, they’ve thought of that – as you’d expect them to after 700 cubic metres of water had to be pumped out of the building after the first flood, and floods two and three reached about 150 cubic metres. Laura Strangeway, Marketing Executive at the York Dungeon, says that the new flood defences, comprising a pump system and changes to the walls and floor levels, have already been tested by the good old British weather – and they’re working well. “The builders have been great, and seeing the scenery go up has been like watching magic at work,” says Laura. “The scenery and props that we’ve got are fantastic – we’ve had to grubby them up a bit though! It’s been a huge job to overhaul the building after being four and a half feet under water.” Laura adds that the Dungeon was a strange place to be without visitors. “When all of the noises had stopped, and there were no more screams or sound effects, it was really eerie,” says Laura. “The smells lingered for about three months too, which was weird!” The launch of the new look York Dungeon will see the fresh characters roam the streets of the city in a parade, and there’s lots to look forward to this year – a ‘Summer of Stink’, plus Halloween events and birthday packages. The Woman in Black (25th February – 2nd March)
Check out our review online!
Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, The Woman in Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. The formula delivers an evening of unremitting drama, transporting the audience into a terrifying and ghostly world. In the show a lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep...

desire, reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur, the stakes rise faster than anyone could have anticipated. We’re hoping for something as visceral as Boyle’s most famous film, Trainspotting.
Jack the Giant Slayer.
Oz: The Great and Powerful. Prequels are very popular these days. We’ve had rubbish ones for Star Wars and recently a confusing one for Alien. But The Wizard of Oz? Seriously? Seems so, as James Franco plays Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician who is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he’s hit the jackpot; fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes, however, when he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and

Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Mmm, but will there be songs? We’ll wait and see…
Trance. Hot from directing the opening ceremony to last year’s London Olympics, Danny Boyle returns to the medium for which he was famous, with a brand new film. Trance follows a fine art auctioneer (James McAvoy) who gets mixed up with a criminal gang and joins forces with a hypnotherapist to recover a lost painting. As boundaries between

Speaking of Trainspotting, Ewan McGregor has come on leaps and bounds. Gone are his heroin-addict portraying days as now he’s mostly concerned with giants. A spin on the fairy-tale Jack and the Beanstalk, this Bryan Singer-directed fantasy sees a long-standing peace between men and giants threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess. The film also stars Warwick Davis and Ian McShane.
Robot & Frank. Continuing our obsession with robots in this month’s mag, here’s a film about a robot and an old man. Who, together, commit crimes! Set in the near future, the story centres on aging exconvict Frank (Frank Langella), whose
son buys him a robot companion (voiced by Peter Sarsgaard), which is programmed to be Frank’s butler. Frank, however, has other plans for his mechanical mate. Susan Sarandon and Liv Tyler join the cast for a film which takes a look into a technology-filled future which refreshingly lacks any dystopia or moral undercurrent. We might try to pull a scam with our new robot vacuum cleaner (see Gadget Guide) but doubt it will be as much fun as this film.
The Croods. A prehistoric comedy animation that follows the world’s first family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime. When their cave is destroyed, Grug (Nicolas Cage) must travel across a spectacular landscape with his family, voiced by actors including Catherine Keener and Emma Stone, to discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures. They encounter Guy (Ryan Reynolds) a prehistoric genius who has some pretty revolutionary ideas. Such as fire. Get him.
