Welcome to

YORK

As we enjoy the last of the summer sun, York is looking splendid as always. You’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful city in the whole country at this time of year. Simply taking a stroll around the city walls is a gorgeous way to spend an afternoon – and there are plenty of lovely cafes and restaurants to keep you topped up with tea and cake. Of course, it’s not only the stunning views that make York a must-visit city – there are loads of ways to keep entertained. From the Viking Heroes exhibition at Jorvik Viking Centre, which features ‘celebrities’

of the age of the Norsemen such as Eric Bloodaxe; to the excellent York Book Fair which will include fantastically rare editions; there is bound to be something to interest you. Food fans in particular are in luck, as the York Food and Drink Festival takes over the city between 20th-29th September. Wannabe scientists will be pleased too, as this year the events explore the relationship between science and the food we eat. Worried about all those extra

calories? Fear not – just bring your bike the week before to burn some off in advance. The York Festival of Cycling, taking place at Rowntree Park from 14th15th September, will feature have a go sessions – you can even try riding a penny farthing! As you’ve probably guessed, there’s far too much going on here to list all the great events – take a look at the Events section of the magazine to find out more.

Film guide HAWKING. if you were asked to name a famous living scientist, you’d probably say this name. hawking tells the amazing tale of physicist stephen hawking, detailing his childhood as an underachieving school boy, through to his life as a genius phd student and subsequent diagnosis with motor neuron disease. professor hawking himself narrates the film, as well as co-writing the story, resulting in what may be an extremely personal and frank look into the life of the world’s most famous genius. RIDDICK. This is the third film to bring us vin diesel’s titular futurist criminal psychopath who can see in the dark. riddick follows the character’s exploits on a planet filled with nasty alien monsters and a group of mercenaries sent to kill him. This unfortunate set of circumstances would be enough to make most people feel quite sad. riddick, however, seems quite content to methodically hunt down all of the mercenaries himself, while chopping up cgi monsters left, right and centre. There will be lots of violence and quite a bit of coarse language. AUSTENLAND. in this romantic comedy, keri russell plays a woman who is so in love with colin Firth’s portrayal of mr darcy in pride and prejudice that she travels to austenland – a resort where Jane austen fans can

live out their deepest fantasies. There she meets a host of eligible regency bachelors, including Flight of the conchord’s brett mackenzie and battlestar galactica’s James callis. if you’re a fan of muttonchopped men slowly walking out of a lake then you’ll love this. howard tried the same in haxby pond. made the ducks angry. R.I.P.D. if you think films about the undead are only about soppy vampires with sparkly skin, think again. r.i.p.d. (rest in peace department) follows freshly dead cop ryan reynolds who, through some quirk of sci-fi trickery, is resurrected to join a special team of similarly deceased police officers. Jeff bridges becomes his zombie mentor as the duo attempt to hunt down the man who killed

reynolds in the first place. expect car chases, excited shouts of “get down!” and Jeff bridges mumbling all his lines through his tash. RUSH. For this ron howarddirected film about the world of Formula one racing, we’re taken back to the 1970s and the true-life rivalry of england’s James hunt and austria’s niki Lauda. The story follows the two drivers differing personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error. The avenger’s chris hemsworth stars, alongside olivia wilde, natalie dormer and daniel brühl.
