Oh, The Weather Outside Is Frightful B

ut York at Christmas time is absolutely bloomin’ fab. And you’ve got plenty of places to go - so many in fact that we’ve had to put together one humongous events diary to keep you busy over the festive season. And a map to help you find them all. You’re welcome. Our historic city of York is certainly beautiful all year round. But when the early nights draw in and the Christmas markets open their doors, you really are treated to the stunning spectacles our humble streets have in store. York’s famous for its pantomimes. This year, head over to the Grand Opera House for an evening with the stars -

including Liberty X’s Michelle Heaton and the magical Martin Daniels - and the tale of Cinderella as you’ve never seen it before. Or, for something completely different, there’s the York Theatre Royal pantomime, The Grand Old Dame of York. It’s fair to say that its fans aren’t just local residents either - far from it in fact. People travel from all over to see our legendary dame, Berwick Kaler. And this year, his 40th on the job, will be his last. Make sure you get your tickets so you don’t miss out on this hilarious ‘rubbish’ (his words, not ours). But seriously, don’t expect a plot. Or good acting. Basically it’s just chaos on stage.

Shopping p.27

And if you’re looking for some traditional Christmas spirit, again, you’re spoilt for choice. From festive events at the National Trust’s stunning houses to Christmas at Castle Howard, Yorkshire really is the place to see this magical season come to life. And let’s not forget our world-famous Minster, where you can experience the story of Christmas and how the day came to be. So, there’s only one thing left to say. Get you gloves on, wrap that scarf around your neck, pull on the fluffy hat and step outside. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
