February is such an amazing month that it sort of feels like a new beginning, allowing us all to put the problems and difficulties of January behind us. Roll on fab February! Residents of York know that February is the month when our Norse ancestors return to the city to retake it for their own. Fortunately the returning Viking hordes are less interested in slaughtering us all, and more concerned with fun and education. The Jorvik Viking Festival will be stocked with talks, walks, stalls, activities, battle re-enactments, and beard competitions. Seriously.

The Rotarians are presenting a concert by Kaminari UK, a York-based Taiko group, showcasing their dynamic blend of music and movement to raise cash for good local causes. The fast-paced, athletic performance will benefit York Against Cancer, as well as other charities that the Rotary Club supports, such as Refugee Action York and Door 84 Youth Club. The ground around Burton Agnes Hall is pretty gorgeous this month Prepare to be enchanted by a spectacular display of snowdrops, which blanket the historic woodland walk around the stately home. The annual Snowdrop Spectacular see hundreds of thousands of hardy snowdrops push through the cold winter ground to create a magnificent ‘white carpet’ across the woodland, running from 10th February until 4th March. Later, the Courtyard cafe awaits visitors returning from a walk, offering delicious, locally roasted Fairtrade coffees and speciality teas, home-baked treats and warming meals created with local and home-grown produce. The Garden Shop and Gift Shop offer the new season’s stock for a perfect gift or treat, and visitors may also like to add to their own collection of snowdrops by choosing a Burton Agnes-propagated plant ready for spring blooming. nVisit

to some of the York Literature Festival’s events A wide variety of authors, artists, book readings, talks and events will be taking place across various venues in York, as the York Literature Festival returns to the city, 15th-26th March. The 2018 programme starts with a special joint-launch event celebrating York Writers. The York Centre for Writing will launch alongside the 2018 festival with a public event taking place at York St John University, and this year’s programme contains a specific strand of events looking at History and Historical Fiction. Whether it is the creative accounts of historical events portrayed by popular historians, or the occupation of “history’s gaps” and untold narratives by the novelist, there is a variety of events to consider. n Visit www.yorkliteraturefestival.co.uk

The NRM is delighted to be hosting astronaut Tim Peake’s iconic spacecraft which transported him to and from the International Space Station two years ago. The Soyuz TMA19M capsule, complete with equipped interior and re-entry char marks, will be on public display until 8th March, allowing visitors to see the famous capsule in person. If that wasn’t enough, the museum will be hosting a series of Soyuz talks and activities discussing the historic piece of engineering that safely brought Tim Peake back to Earth. Fronted by lead singer Jordan Brown, previously of New Law, the five piece describe themselves as ‘five mates having a good time’. You would believe them, with their uncoordinated aesthetic and laid back stage presence, but their sound is much more serious than that, think indie rock laced with deep grove and hard hitting choruses.
