YORK LIFE
Congratulations! Well done, 10,000,000th reader! You have won a cruise to the South Pole. Pack shorts, as that place is pretty warm. Obviously that isn't true, and as much as we would like to give everyone in York a free cruise – to a pole of their choice – the above statement is merely our loose involvement in this year's April Fools Day. Did you enjoy it? No, of course you didn't. Because April Fool pranks are only for cruel people who like being mean. You big meanies. That is why we've steered clear of pranks for our April issue, focussing instead on all the brilliant things that happen in York – even the ones that take place before noon on the 1st of the month. We have yet another jam-packed issue, celebrating York, its
deans garden centre
people (you), and a whole month of glorious goings-on.
May we interest you in our Time Travel article, in which we delve into the history of the Merchant Adventurers' Hall? How about soaking up some controversy in the form of our opinionated columnists? And hey, how would you like to be fully informed in a variety of areas thanks to our experts? Or, y'know, you could merely sit back with a coffee, enter our new competitions, and randomly pick a few awesome events to attend in our bumper events, theatre and gig section. Either way, you'll have a great month, and won't be mean to anyone. Please. We're really delicate.

Spring might have not yet sprung, but we have some summer plans for you already. That is because on 9th June, held at York Racecourse, Macmillan Cancer Support will host the third annual Hopes & Dreams Ball. Guests to the glittering night will experience an Oscars-like arrival, a drinks reception with entertainment, a scrumptious dinner with a live band, a silent and live auction, a wishing tree raffle, a casino, a chocolate fountain and nibbles, more music, and a DJ right until 1.30am. Find out more about this great night by calling 07733 833710.
Most famous film ever? Come on, it has to be The Wizard of Oz. We're pretty sure that if aliens landed on earth for the first time tomorrow, they'd still be able to belt out a few lines from Over the Rainbow. This month the magic of Oz is coming to York, as Pick Me Up Theatre perform the stage version of the 1939 movie at The Grand Opera House, 27th April-5th May. Prepare to follow Dorothy as she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Lion, and takes a wondrous trip along a road of a certain colour and material. Find out more at www.pickmeuptheatre.com
The brilliant news is that we have two tickets available for one lucky winner, and entering is as easy as answering this:
The great news is that we have three pairs of tickets up for grabs. For a chance of winning a pair, simply answer this question:
Where will the Hopes & Dreams Ball be held?
What is the name of the main character who ventures into Oz?

YORK LIFE
and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG
Ah me, I think, staring out of the window at the pelting rain. I could go outside, get cold and wet and buy some soup vegetables for lunch from one of those nice fruit ’n’ veg stalls in the market. Or I could stay inside with a hot water bottle and enjoy the avocado that has been awating my attention for the past couple of days.
their avocados being too hard or over-ripe. Avocado Anxiety is a sub-syndrome of a larger, distressing condition known as First World Problems. Apparently it often goes together with another ailment called “Prosecco
Now I know that First World Problems have been scientifically validated, I have to acknowledge the fact that my life is essentially a string of them. I am going to the Minster this evening, but the shoes I was going to wear (which match my outfit) are comprehensively unsuitable for foul weather. Wellies really need to be worn with trousers (which I don’t possess), and can I really go to the Minster in wellies anyway? Isn’t that a bit like being an Englishman on a beach without a tie? I know I should be thinking about really pressing problems, such as insuring my house contents, but I’m afraid that ruminations about footwear have to take priority.
The avocado, needless to say, wins. But what horror is this? “Ripe and ready to eat”, it says on the little sticker. But it is neither ripe nor ready to eat. It is hard and unappealing. In fact, it is completely inedible. And all of a sudden I am overwhelmed by the terrible affliction that I now know is Avocado Anxiety. I know that this is a real condition because researchers commissioned by HTC, working with a behavioural psychologist from Goldsmiths, University of London, discovered that one in three people aged 18-70 worried about
Panic”. I thought this meant “fear of being served Prosecco rather than Champagne”, which would be completely understandable. In fact, though, it means “fear of

If it’s not footwear, it’s even more serious matters. They mostly seem to fall into the category of “Stuff That I Want To Buy But Can’t”. Like why does Neal’s Yard on Low Petergate no longer sell Citrus

Hand Softener? When did Lakeland stop making its little Sellotape dispensers? Where has M&S put the cheese aisle now? Why did Betty’s decide to make their Chocolate & Orange Little Rascals “seasonal items” only? Either that, or it’s the plethora of choice. I am thinking of the Barnitt’s lightbulb department here, which can send me into an spiral of indecision lasting so long that it involves sitting in King’s Square Nero with a pain au chocolat (Heaven forbid they run out. Yet another First World Problem). And, of course, Love Cheese. This is a treasure trove of First World Problems such as sometimes only being able to buy whole Epoisses rather than small pieces, and occasionally having to buy Haxby Bakery granary bread instead of their white cob. Just imagine the agony that would go into choosing what colour Aga to buy - not to mention the deliberations involved in whether to use Farrow and Ball’s Ammonite or Purbeck Stone on the kitchen walls. Of course, I ought to be turning a deep shade of red (F&B’s Incarnadine or Radicchio? Hard to decide) when I realise that I spend time thinking about the squashiness of avocados. It is surely very wrong to be distressed by having to make do with a Longley Farm hazelnut yoghurt when you really wanted a gooseberry one. But on the other hand, worrying about whether Mannions might have sold out of meringues is infinitely preferable to living in a war-zone or being homeless or fretting about my family’s safety or trying to fathom catastrophic world events. Every day that I can wonder why my dishwasher isn’t washing things properly or feel put out because I missed the Parcelforce collection at Micklegate Post Office is a day on which nothing truly bad has happened. And however unripe my avocados might be, for that I am immensely grateful. ADVERTIS EM EN T

PREPARE FOR A KNOCK-OUT Remember It’s a Knockout? Your answer will probably depend on your age, and indeed your fondness for TV shows of days gone by. Well, regardless of if you’re now remembering the calamitous contests and that one time the Royal family gave it a go, or if you’re now tugging at your mum’s arm and asking what the heck it is, we know of one popular event that needs you. Dunnington Fayre, that ever-popular family fun day taking place on 28th July, are looking for teams to compete in an It’s a Knockout-style competition. Teams of ten are needed to make it happen, so the organisers of the event are looking to businesses who might be interested in a team-building, get wet, get messy challenge to build morale and comradery. And, y’know, get bashed about and make total fools of themselves. n Up for that? If so, sign your team up by the end of April by visiting www.dunningtonfayre.org.uk and finding the Contact Us page.
BRING THE HIGHLANDS TO YORK If you’re looking for a fun new activity to improve both your health and your social circle, look to Scotland. However, before you pack your bags and book your train tickets northwards, you only have to go as far as English Martyrs’ Church Hall on Dalton Terrace. Phew. That is because York Scottish Dance Club meet there on Monday evenings, 7.30 to 10pm, for a whole load of dancing fun, and you’ll be happy to hear that neither a partner, nor experience, is necessary. n To find out more, email ruthpotter@live.co.uk
Swish Home Improvements is the north east’s fastest growing home improvement company. We boast a proven track record in a range of installations from bespoke driveways to conservatories and everything in between.
JOINING THE FIGHT It is estimated that there are now more than 850,000 people in the UK living with some form of dementia, with almost 3000 of those right here in York. Dementia can destroy lives, both for the person living with it, and for their family and friends. Fortunately the country’s largest dementiafighting charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK, are now looking to found a brand new fund raising group in our noble city. They are looking for a range of different volunteers, who could bring a wealth of different skills to the table: be it those with personal experience of dementia, or just enthusiastic people who are keen to join the fight. n If you feel you have something to offer, contact Claire Priestwood on 07799 902428, or by emailing claire.priestwood@ alzheimersresearchuk.org
TOUCH AND GO Rugby time! Grab your boots, join the scrum, and prepare to get muddy... ladies. That is because Touch Rugby for women is returning to York, following a really successful course that took place during the previous summer. Starting in April, the four-week course will see women master the art of Touch Rugby, while also getting fit, learning a new sport, and making a barrel-load of new friends. n If you would like to know more about what the course involves, email lumckay@outlook.com
GOING POSTAL If you have an interest in stamps, beyond requiring one to send a thank you letter to Great Aunt June for you annual Christmas socks, you are not alone. The York Philatelic Society will this year be celebrating their 70th anniversary, and as well as holding a special buffet on 26th June, the society are keen to bolster their ranks with new members. They meet every second Tuesday of the month for get-togethers for talks, social meetings, and special events. n They have an array of interesting displays planned in this anniversary year, so to find out more, call 411455.
We are fully qualified and insured for your peace of mind. With over 17 years of experience in the Home Improvement industry, rest assured that your home improvements are in good hands. No matter how big the task is.

ARIES
21ST MAR 19TH APR L to R: Elton John, Kourtney Kardashian, Robert Donwey Jr., Victoria Beckham
Birthday celebrations will bring surprise gifts, at least one of which could be described as a love token. A bright cheerful mood permeates throughout the month, apart from a temporary 48 hour dip around the 18th, when a friend or colleague puts you in a position of heavily divided loyalties. You’ll have to spend some time sorting out someone else’s mess, but don’t expect too much thanks for your efforts. Social aspects see you getting out and about a bit more than usual, with interesting travel
aspects at weekends; you may be spending a little extra money to impress someone, but no harm done here. Female members of the sign should be aware of the fact that their flirtatious teasing could be taken seriously, while gentlemen Arians need to be realistic in their romantic ambitions. A red tape-y involvement around the 24th/25th when you find yourself having to deal with petty minded bureaucrats.
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
but only if you give them the chance! This is a time to look forwards, not backwards, and learn from experience
April always brings a feeling of restlessness; it’s time to be doing something, going somewhere, starting something new! If you can achieve any of this, then you’re fine and flying high, but if not, you’ll find yourself becoming grumpy and frustrated when even the tiniest thing fails to fall into place. There is a need to adjust to new family realities.
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUNE A brighter and more harmonious month in family matters and affairs of the heart. There seems to be a willingness to compromise, and
partners pull together towards common goals. New job prospects for some, new work routines for others, and this is not a time to be any kind of shy shrinking violet! If you’re offered more responsibility, reach out and grab it with both hands.
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL If you are given the opportunity to turn back the clock, and try igniting some old lost flame from your past, see this not as an opportunity, but a temptation that needs to be avoided. The person who broke your heart once could quite easily do it twice –

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
A strong month for building relationships, although time spent apart will be just as important as time spent together. A confident mood where jobs and careers are concerned, but don’t take on more than you can cope with, and do not allow career ambitions to get in the way of your emotional agendas. A necessary journey comes at an awkward time.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT Some reward in the wind relative to the patience you have shown over the last few years. Good things do not land in your lap like Mannah from Heaven, but there is now a subtle shift in the pattern of your luck, and doors do begin to creak open in your favour. Unexpected meetings during the last week of the month create some new sexual excitement!
LIBRA 23RD SEP - 22ND OCT An exciting month where relationships are concerned, and if someone is propositioning you with

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV Some family dissent in mother/son relationships which cannot be easily resolved without major compromise – but what constitutes a compromise? Finances are a bit “up and down” at this time, caused by unexpected expense. Some necessary changes of plans around the 21st/23rd are an inconvenience, but could also be a blessing in disguise.
SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV-21ST DEC It doesn’t come quickly or easily, but you will nevertheless be successful in finding new pathways and targets for the mid and long term future. A boost to your self confidence (and motivation) occurs between the 7th and the 11th which encourages you to do something you have been putting off for far too long. This brings some deep feelings of inner satisfaction!
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN

some weird and wonderful new idea, be brave and say “yes”! Finances are improving, but someone else is making a lot of effort to make this so. Ladies in particular will get some hard materialist evidence of a partner’s commitment.
AQUARIUS 20TH JAN - 18TH FEB Sudden travel aspects could be exciting – but just as equally, they could be a real pain! Still, when you gotta go, and all that… On a deep mental level, you’ll be surveying the next few years of your life, and will arrive at a number of disturbing conclusions. However, this is NOT a good time to be impulsive, and you should bide your time before making any major changes.
PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR If someone is pushing you into making some kind of emotional choice, it may be because they’ve waited far too long for you to do exactly that! You may resent the pressure, but the only way to remove it is to actually make a decision of a “yes” or “no” nature, then things are done and dusted one way or another, and everyone will know where they stand.

TREASURE HUNT
1.
We start by the main entrance from the city (not the one by the huge car park further along Leeman Road). Enter (it’s free), say hello to the nice people on the welcome desk, and... • Walk straight ahead, passing by the shop and the entrance to The Great Hall. Just before you enter Station Hall, name the first (very old) steam engine you meet.
3.
Turn left and head up the small wooden steps onto the raised platform, lined with old Royal carriages. • What once covered Queen Elizabeth’s saloon during the Second World War?
4.
Passing the restaurant on your left, cross the platform to where all the

The furthest train to the right should be a blue British Rail electric locomotive. • Speaking of which, from what decade was this type of train used? • Moving down the platform, what kind of food was more readily available after the introduction of the railways? • Once you get to the end of the row of trains and carriages... what did Franklins once sell?
5.
Right, leave Station Hall via the way you entered, and head for the subway that takes you through to The Great Hall. As you alight on the other side... • Which Countess offers an exquisite new dining experience?

Enter The Great Hall and turn immediately to the left. • The Dominion of where? • Hugging the wall to the left, find the name of the person British Rail approached to design their livery.

Walk toward the turntable in the middle of the hall. Start walking around it, clockwise. • What is the name of train number 92220? • Where was the replica of Stephenson’s Rocket made? • In which year was train number 1008 built? • Until which year did the 4-Sub Electric Motor Coach run?

But in which year? • Finally, the locomotive attached to the car, the Mallard, was the fastest steam loco in the world. How fast did it go?

REVIEW: David Lloyd club Ever energetic, I laced up my trainers and bounced over to David Lloyd Club to give you guys the lowdown. Like a child in a sweet shop I dive through my itinerary for the afternoon. A one to one tennis session with racquet manager, Adam Harvey, starts with me pelting the glass window (cringey). But Adam doesn’t flinch and with his expert guidance I’m soon hitting a tennis ball the way I ought to be. Kudos to him because until today, I hadn’t used a racket for the best part of a decade. Graciously pulling together each aspect of fitness into a health club is no mean feat, but it feels like a smooth operation at David Lloyd, York. Whatever is on the agenda, whether it’s playing tennis, relaxing in the sauna and pool, working out, getting your head down (there’s actually a room for people to study and do work) or grabbing a bite to eat, you really can do it all.
David Lloyd has teams of all ages and expertise, with regular tennis sessions. Members can also book out the courts for their own games.
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS GYMTIMIDATION HERE IT FEELS LIKE MY AREA TOO. My PT session starts with a go on the Boditrax machine and a revelation - I’m 32 according to my metabolic rate. Not just for freaking out about your metabolic age, the machine tells you and your PT where you need to focus on and the information helps your PT tailor a workout for you. Alex who’s kindly looking after me for the next hour, isn’t discouraged. He takes me through a balanced workout including lunges, squats, circuits and even a trip into what I like to refer to as ‘the big boy
24
area’ AKA weights, but there’s no such thing as gymtimidation here - it feels like my area too. The David Lloyd club mentality is a force to be reckoned with, staff are invested in members and want to see them do well. There’s been no shortage of encouragement and praise to psych me up throughout the day. After two hours of exercise, refuelling is on the agenda: The D’licious menu is a hybrid of health kicks and hearty meals to suit all moods and dietary requirements. Not wanting to spoil my super healthy day I choose a warm goats cheese and avocado salad - it’s colourful, tasty, satisfying and less than 600 calories. If swimming is your jam then there’s an indoor and outdoor heated pool - I head straight to the
The day comes to a close in the changing rooms - which are huge by the way. Dark mahogany wood covers the lockers, while stretches of mirror sprawl between them, hairdryers at every station and red leather seating dotted around makes it feel super luxurious. There’s also a play pen - this is a family club make no mistake about it. Kids are

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE MERCHANT ADVENTURERS’ HALL If you've ever waited for a bus on Piccadilly and peered over the wall to see an odd looking timber building, you might have had a few questions. Grand, unusual, and sitting low down right by the Rover Foss, the Merchant Adventurers' Hall was once one of the most important buildings in York and today is know for... well, never stopping being what it was originally intended to be. Which is rare. Today the best place to see the hall, which started to be built in 1357, is from the aforementioned Piccadilly. However, that is relatively modern view, as the raised street over the Foss didn't exist until the turn of the 20th century. To get an authentic view of the hall, enter via the tunnel off Fossgate; the original entrance. Oh, and to be truly authentic, you should be a wealthy 14th century person with a purse full of coin and a portfolio of overseas trading interests.
Drat, so close.
THE CLUBHOUSE Constructed on the site of an old Norman manor house, the hall was paid for by a wealthy group of men and woman who formed The Guild of Our Lord Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Originally the intention was purely religious and charitable, with the undercroft being used as a hospital for the sick, and almhouses for the poor. However, the upper floors were used for the members to conduct their business, and as so many of them were merchants and traders, they set up a trading guild by 1430. A royal charter was granted by King Henry VI and the company changed their name to The Ministry of Mercers. You can see see the charter in the hall today. It is from this point on that the importance of the guild, and their hall, sky-rocketed. Any goods
coming into the city to sell went through the guild, and the members themselves became very influential, travelling throughout the country, and internationally, to keep their moneymaking interests active. What is so rare about the hall is that many of the original records of these adventures still exist, giving us an insight into the type of people that the 'Merchant Adventurers' were.
LOST HORSES? One such character immortalised by expense records was John Lillyng. The surviving documents show that John might not have been the most honest of traders, making several trips to London, seemingly on behalf of the guild, and charging all his expenses to them. Apparently John needed 40 shillings for “wyne and dyners” for a group of lawyers and clerks, and further payments which appear to be bribes for members of the royal
court. On one journey he also sought reimbursement for wine and cakes and, strangely, two lost horses. As you do. The guild continued to go from strength, and the hall saw enlargements and alterations. A brick chapel was added – supposedly the first brick building in the city since Roman times – and also meeting rooms and an annex. As well as controlling trade in York, they also took care of their own, providing money and care to the widows and children of deceased members.
CLOSE SHAVE However, as with all organisations who purported to do God's work, they had to justify their existence at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Had their religious origins and Christian work seemed too much for Henry VIII's tastes, they would have lost everything – including

the hall. Fortunately the guild played down their religious elements and focussed on their importance to York's economy, surviving the chop. Things improved under the reign of Henry's daughter, as Elizabeth I granted the guild the charter to change their name to The Company of Merchant Adventurers – which still exists to this day. By the start of the 16th century the guild's importance had started to dwindle. However, that didn't stop the wealthy members from continuing to improve their fancy hall, and it was at this time that the Fossgate gatehouse was originally built, lining up the entrance tunnel with the hall's main entrance. Also, from this point on, the guild seemed to continue furnishing the hall with items saved from other York Buildings – many of

which were about to be demolished. Many of the stained glass windows were originally housed elsewhere, the green wood panels of the Governor's stall were from the Assizes Courts, and the chimney piece in the Governor's Parlour was from a nearby, now demolished, house.
STILL GAME The Company of Merchant Adventurers is still very much active today, making the hall the largest wood frame building in the world that is used for its original purpose. Although no trading takes place there any more (with the exception of the gift shop and cafe) it is still used for the company's purposes of charitable and social events. You can visit it and see this wonderful old stuff, and you don't have to own several plantations in Virginia. Which is nice.

I’m furious, I really thought we would take the next step soon and can’t believe he would rather live with his mates than me after us being serious for so long. I want to ask him to move in with me but I’m scared I won’t like the answer.

You say you’ve casually talked about moving in, but have you talktalked? Sit him down and discuss the fact that you had hoped you would move in together soon - make it clear what you want. He might rather live with you, but you don’t know until you ask, and the answer is something you’re going to have to accept either way. On the one hand he might want a year of living with the boys before he settles down - which isn’t a crime, although you need to decide if you’re happy to wait around for him. Or it could be something he might do if you guys didn’t end up moving in together. Either way, a clear conversation is what’s needed to resolve this. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know.

and happy. The trouble is, whenever they get back from my mother in law’s they seem to have dicky tummies. I’m sure she’s piling them with dairy products and not telling me. I don’t want to be ungrateful for her having them but she can’t keep on feeding them stuff behind my back, especially when they feel poorly afterwards. I’ve asked the kids what they eat at grandma’s house to make sure I’m not being paranoid and they have mentioned stuff like ice cream and Sunday dinners both things that can be vegan, but I have my suspicions. How do I approach it? You’re going to have to ask grandma very nicely without pointing the finger of blame. You could maybe broach it casually in the sense that you’re worried the kids might have an allergy so you’re watching what they’re eating, and if she could keep a note of what she’s feeding them that would be fab. With any luck you’ll find that the dicky tummies mysteriously disappear. On the other hand, they are your kids and it’s totally up to you how you

bring them up - she should respect that and you might need to draft in a little help from your partner to back you up if it comes down to it.
INHERITANCE SPAT My grandma left me more money in her will then my siblings and cousins. This wouldn’t have been a problem but my aunt and uncle were present at the reading of the will and told everyone. They are now suggesting that I should share it equally. The trouble is, I spent a lot more time with my grandparents than anyone else did and I feel that grandma left me more money because we were much closer. Should I respect her wishes or cave in to my family’s demands? RESPECT YOUR GRANDMA’S WISHES and screw anyone else who says otherwise. I’m well aware that you have to live with your family through this decision but I’m shocked and appalled that they even considered going against their grandma’s will for their own financial gain. Money does horrible things to people and this is a prime example of it. You need to get some team members on your side who understand that this isn’t your decision, you didn’t ask to be given what you’ve been given and it’s utterly disrespectful to go against dead family member’s wishes. What a horrid bunch, and what a horrid time to act up like this. Feel free to remind them that there’s a clear reason you’ve been given this money and it’s quite frankly, because you spent more time with your grandma than they did.

WHAT RAPID WHALE MINI BOAT. Ah, a life on the ocean waves, eh? If your busy executive lifestyle means you have very little time to get to the yacht shop and pick yourself out a sixty-footer, this could come in handy. The Rapid Whale Mini Boat is a teeny boat designed for one... that you build yourself. Powered by an electric motor, and made from plywood, the Rapid Whale will certainly cause a few heads to turn as you cruise through the regatta, captain’s hat on at a jaunty angle. You old sea dog, you. £1000 from www.rapidwhale.com

SPORTREPORT
Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence. Sometimes I sit down to write this column and think literally nothing has happened in the previous month, or perhaps it feels like that because supporting York City is like Groundhog Day. However, this time so much has happened and not just from a sporting point of view. In the US, president Donald Trump was widely criticised for suggesting that teachers should be armed whereas here in the UK there was outrage when KFC ran out of chicken. One news channel quoted a woman as being “angry and upset”! This was all happening just before the “Beast from the East” which rightly in perspective caused more panic and worry than the prospect of Kentucky Fried Chips. On the plus side of the snow falling, seeing my daughter speed down a hill on a sled eclipsed anything I had seen on the Winter Olympics. The only vague interest I had was in the curling, which my mum comments “Is hardly hard that curling you just throw that thing down and

sweep the ice” Given the amount of sweeping and cleaning she does at my sister’s house, I wondered whether her comment might be because she is eyeing up the 2022 games despite the fact she will be in her late 50s.
WINNER, WINNER One benefit of the recent arctic conditions was that York City had a game postponed meaning at least one weekend this season wasn’t ruined. I just don’t get the Minstermen as only a week after
a morale boosting victory over league leaders Salford City, they capitulated 4-1 at the mighty Curzon Ashton; another midtable, part-time team who on this occasion had already played a midweek game whilst full-time city had a free week to prepare. It didn’t impress me, nor did it manager Martin Gray, who angrily reacted by publicly condemning the performance, not matching the high standards he demands, before concluding that he himself was a “winner”. Admirable words from the gaffer but as an ex Sunderland and Darlington midfield it did make me think I am not sure winner means the same thing in the North East as it does in Yorkshire. Ultimately Martin Gray will be defined by the clubs attempts to get in, and then progress through the end of season play-offs. Objective one of ending the regular campaign of regionalised football in the play-off positions will be largely determined

by April’s fixtures with the final two home games. These are the Yorkshire derby against high fliers Harrogate Town on April 7th before Leamington come to Bootham Crescent on April 21st. It’s hard to imagine that April will see the end of the season but hopefully York City can work their way to another three fixtures in May and secure an immediate return to the National League.
UBER SILLY Of course, it’s not just York City where things are frustrating. Arsenal supporters are seeing their club fall down the pecking order of England’s elite sides, though I did see a rather amusing checklist on twitter going through their team that read; Finished manager: check, weak defence: check, dodgy keeper: Cech! Whilst they are on a downward spiral, it pales insignificant to West Brom who are rock bottom of the Premier League, but worse than that they have had the negative publicity from a team training camp in Spain where four players stole a taxi. Obviously, a combined wage of over £200,000 per week wasn’t enough to catch an Uber, but with the vehicle including old pro Gareth Barry you can see why they were caught when he no doubt stopped to put his seat belt on and turn on the indicators. Finally, VAR in football is proving to be a real nightmare. Football has survived for hundreds of years on dodgy refereeing displays. Now it appears we now must wait for someone to check video footage to make the same bad decisions as the man in the middle. The amount they are checking it just feels like a mate on a night out who must check in with his girlfriend every five minutes.

Motoring
news PUT IT IN THE BOOT
ACCIDENTS DOWN, TECH UP According to info released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, road traffic accidents on British roads are down by 10% since 2012. Apparently new technology is to thank, as now more than 60% of cars on the roads have some kind of driving and safety assistance. They also released data showing that an increase of safety devices on cars could save more than 5000 lives by 2030 and prevent more than 25,000 accidents. It’s great news that as time goes on a greater number of the cars on the road will be safer. However, it seems like the only unsafe element of the car is the fleshy blob at the wheel. We wonder when the robots will decide to remove that. ROBOT REVOLUTION!
It’s now just over a year since the crackdown came into effect on mobile phone use while driving. Despite the number of people being caught using their phone at the wheel, something that will land you an instant £200 fine and six points on your license, is down, many people are still at it. Idiots. Recently police across England and Wales carried out a huge operation to monitor the roads, looking specifically for drivers talking and texting on their phone. One officer in Bournemouth reported stopping four motorists in the first 15 minutes of his watch. Our advice isn’t about not risking the fine and points, but rather not risking the lives of the people around you and your own. Put it in the boot. Temptation over.
ECHO... ECHO... ECHO...
Amazon’s Echo smart speaker, which can take voice commands to play music, order a taxi, turn on the lights, and tell you what else that woman in that thing has also been in, is now compatible with new Ford cars. Working closely with Ford, Amazon has programmed a command whereby you can switch on your car’s engine with a simple phrase... from anywhere on the planet. We can imagine it being handy on a cold morning, being able to start the engine from the kitchen to warm up the car an all, but turning it on while sitting on a beach 7000 miles away is... weird, right? Still, if it’ll impress the neighbours, let’s do it!
GADGETGUIDE GOOGLE CLIPS. If you love recording important and fun moments, but hate being stuck behind the camera, this new gadget from Google could help. Clips is small camera that has been designed to be set up and left to capture the action of a scene. It then decides which moments were worth saving and sends them to your phone. Like a little robot photographer. n Available for pre-order at www.store.google.com SKYROAM SOLIS. If you’ve ever travelled abroad and used your mobile internet data on your phone, you might have returned home to find ma-hoo-sive bill. Roaming charges are crazy in some countries, which is why the Skyroam Solis offers mobile internet in any country in the world, for a smaller pre-pay amount than your network provider. It also works as a portable battery for your phone. Two birds. n £136.99 from www.skyroam.com/solis BOSE SOUNDWEAR COMPANION. These are speakers that you wear. I need more storage!
WORLD CUP FEVER Is it too early to start making predictions for the World Cup? The only thing we can bank on for certain is that there will be an incredible, and some might say, unfounded optimism in our national side getting through to the final. Every time a cup competition comes round we, and I include myself in this, imagine that our team will reach the top tiers of success. We laugh in the face of the statisticians and the nay-sayers because we know that the great escape is always possible, that the collective will of a nation is enough to deliver the win, that all we have to do is believe!
We hear from Mel Collier of JDL…
I love the euphoria that accompanies our group stage matches, the fantastical theories of the amateur Until a couple of years ago I didn’t pundits, the sweep of national pride, understand the need for storage in a vuvuzela blowing and flag waving that bathroom. Although high on my clients make it very hard not to get caught lists of wants and needs, I had no storage up in. Is this our year, could this be in my own bathroom and so didn’t the return to the glory of over 50 really see the point. That was until I embarked upon my own bathroom years ago that we are all waiting for? renovation – now I wonder how I did without it and would recommend it Let’s hope so! to anyone!
WATCH IT ON THE BEST KIT Here’s to a successful world cup for the boys in Russia, at the very least it will give us all something other than the weather to talk about for a few weeks!
Storage comes in many forms, from a cabinet on the wall to a run of units comprising basin cabinets and cupboards either side, and everything in between. No matter how small your bathroom is, there is always something you can utilise; but please take this word of warning…
BUY CHEAP, BUY TWICE… Bathroom units are made in such a manner that they can withstand prolonged periods of heat, steam and water and, because of this, they are not cheap. If you want your units to last as long as your sanitaryware you need to look at a reputable manufacturer who specialises in making units for a bathroom environment. Please do not be taken in by cheaper alternatives because in a couple of years you’ll end up with blown cabinets and chipped laminate. You’ll end up having to buy them all over again which works out to be a false economy.
3D WORLD Here at JDL I can point you in the right direction and make
Herbert Todd’s are currently giving away football shirt vouchers with selected Samsung televisions and have great deals on large screens for the World Cup. There’s Buy Now - Pay Later and Rental options to make the latest kit more affordable than ever. Please call in for a demonstration.
sure cabinets are going to fit in by producing a 3D drawing of what they will actually look like. We can look at colours, handles and worktops to make your bathroom individual to you, and by enlisting the help of our preferred suppliers we can show you the cabinets in the showroom prior to making your final decision, so you know exactly what you are getting. Finally, they are fitted by one of our specialist team and the clutter of toilet rolls, cleaner, spare toothpaste and shampoo is hidden away from sight and, like me, you’ll wonder how you ever did without!

Perfect Ponds THERE’S A NEW SHOP IN TOWN… …And it’s a treasure trove of industrial chic pieces for the home.
Want to build a pond but don’t know where to start? In the first of a 2 part series Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to build your perfect pond. LOCATION AND SIZE
An exciting new retailer has opened in Stamford Bridge offering an eclectic mix of unique and quirky, vintage and industrial style furniture, lighting, home accessories and gifts. Eclectic17 opened up on Main Street in February and is proving to be a big hit with furniture and homeware shoppers. People are travelling from areas all over Yorkshire to come and purchase their next statement pieces. Owner, Louise Daddy, has worked tirelessly for the past six months to bring together a collection of extraordinary furniture and home accessories, everything is handpicked with beautiful homes in mind. The whole shop has been designed from scratch and features homeware and furniture inspired by different places and cultures. Louise wanted to bring something different to the home furnishing market while making sure that there is something for everyone. Head along to see for yourself what a sterling job she’s done. n Eclectic17, 11 Main St, Stamford Bridge, York YO41 1AE You can also follow Elclectic17 on Facebook and Twitter for competitions and offers. Find them by searching @eclectic17uk
Avoid overhanging trees and boggy ground. Aim for the pond to get around 4-6 hours of sun a day. Mark it out with a hosepipe or rope so that you are happy with the size and position.
CHOOSE THE TYPE OF LINER Will it be a preformed, rigid pond or a flat sheet flexible liner? Rigid ponds are very tough and have no folds/creases but there are limited shapes and depths available. Flexible liners can be moulded to the exact shape and depth you want but can be punctured. If you choose a Rigid Pond, buy it first, then stand it in place and mark out the shape on the ground (using sand) before you start to dig. You can back fill with sand if you make it too big. If you choose a Flexible Liner dig the hole first. When you’re done measure the hole you've dug, then work out the size of the liner you'll need: use an online calculator or call a local supplier.
Enjoy your pond!

Rhododendrons For anyone who gardens on acid soil, Rhododendrons are some of the most prized ornamental shrubs. Profuse trusses of bell-shaped flowers in a wide variety of bold colours and the generally evergreen foliage, give year round form and texture to the garden. They range in size from giant tree sized forms that reach 30m in their native habitat, to tiny low growing alpine varieties. Rhododendrons require moisture retentive, but well drained, acidic soil with plenty of organic matter and a pH of between 5 and 6. If you are not sure of your pH, testing kits are available.
GROWING Even if you’re not blessed with acidic soil there are still a couple of ways to grow Rhododendrons and other acid loving plants like Pieris and Gaultheria in your garden. The first and most simple way is to use pots and
42
containers filled with special ericaceous compost. This is a peat based compost that contains no lime and has a pH of around 5.5. The only drawback to pots is if you live in a hard water area and water with tap water, lime builds up in the compost making the plants yellow and sickly with a lack of vigour (chlorotic), but even this can be got around by either collecting and using rain water or applying a specific fertiliser that feeds the plant and counteracts the lime. Another problem growing Rhododendrons in pots is bud drop. Flower buds form in midsummer, and should compost in the pot dry out, even for a short period of time, the stress will cause the buds to fail and not develop correctly and fall prematurely. Over the last few years many new hybrids of Rhododendron yakushimanum have been bred; these are known as Yak hybrids, they all are floriferous, compact, slow growing and very hardy hybrids that come in a wide range of colours and are ideal
for containers. Some of the most popular are ‘Fred Peste’, ‘Golden Torch’ and ‘Percy Wiseman’. The second way is by building a raised bed. Railway sleepers are ideal for this as brick or stone built beds that are mortared in contain a lot of lime in the mortar, but again this can be got around by lining the sides with polythene. The bed is then filled using the lime free ericaceous compost; this has fewer drawbacks but could take up a lot of space and is quite expensive.
FLOWERING Rhododendrons usually start flowering in February, with Rhododendron praecox being one of the first. It requires a sheltered site, as the rosy purple flowers are slightly susceptible to damaging frosts, but the real show starts in late April and builds to a stunning climax of colour in early June, though some varieties, notably ‘Polar Bear’, flower during July and early August. Rhododendrons can be planted all year round, provided that the soil is not frozen or water logged, but the optimum time is September when the ground is still warm but moist.
Spring planting can be equally effective but requires very regular watering throughout the summer months to ensure successful establishment. A good thick organic mulch on the soil surface after planting helps conserve moisture.
This fundraising appeal really ‘took off’ While we’re on the subject of Dean’s Garden Centre, we have to congratulate them for raising a huge amount of money last year for their chosen charity, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Staff and customers, at both the York and Scarborough sites, helped to raise a whopping £26,000 in 2017, from a range of fun events. The money will go to the flying ambulance charity to help them keep their fleet of choppers in the air to keep us all safe – no matter where in Yorkshire we are. Well done to all at Deans!

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.
Q.
Two friends asked me to identify this nice plant. They said it had big heart shaped leaves that changed colour in autumn. So Chris…over to you!
ensure you give it enough space, grow it along a wall, and let it wrap its tendrils on trellis or wires to give it support, prune to keep within its allotted space because this climber is very vigorous.
Vitis Coignetiae is a deciduous climber that likes humus rich, neutral to alkaline soil. It will grow in sun or partial shade, is very hardy, and is grown for its architectural foliage and brilliant autumn colour. This spectacular plant challenges the Russian Vine for vigour and easily beats it for beauty. The young shoots are covered with loose grey down and the huge leathery, three to five lobed, heartshaped leaves 30cm in diameter are beautiful. The sunken veins create a rough texture on the upper surface, the underneath of the leaves is thick, rusty brown felt that feels like suede. The flowers are insignificant green in colour, borne in summer, followed by small, black, inedible grapes with a purple bloom appearing in autumn – they don’t even make wine! Admire instead the spectacular autumn colour creating a cloak of scarlet, mahogany and orange, bathed in autumn sunshine it is truly magnificent. When planting,
Ferns are the first plants that would be on my list. Of all non-flowering perennials, ferns are easily the most garden worthy. Offering an exciting variety of shapes and heights for use as specimen plants or in bold groupings. Most of the following ferns are of medium to large size, and will thrive given humus rich soil, moisture and shade. Asplenium Scolopendrium, Hart’s Tongue Fern, easily recognised by its long leathery, strap-shaped evergreen fronds and marked beneath with stripes of brown spores. Athyruim Red Beauty has a silvery leaf with red stems, herbaceous and very pretty, is good for the front of a border. Dryopteris Erthrosora Red shield fern is one of the most colourful of hardy ferns. Its coppery red young fronds in spring and summer contrast with the shiny, dark green over wintering mature fronds. Polystichum Setiferum Soft Shield Fern is a graceful and beautiful fern which develops a large, loose shuttlecock of evergreen, finely divided, dark green fronds. It

will thrive on a shady bank or ditch. Matteuccia Struthiopteris is another choice. The bold, upright fronds of this fern, arching like the plumes of an ostrich, led to its common name of Ostrich Feather Fern or Ostrich Fern. The outer fresh green fronds of this deciduous fern are sterile, hiding the inner, dark brown fertile fronds. Plants that are good for inter-planting with ferns, and also like shade: Ajuga – purple reddish or variegated mats of foliage with blue flowers in spring. Bergenia – has large, rounded, glossy leaves, often reddening in autumn with pink flowers in spring. Hostas really work well, with a vast amount of different coloured leaves. Astilbe have large frothy, conical plumes of red, pink and white flowers that rise above robust clumps of much divided, bright green handsome leaves in early summer and prefers a moist soil. Good luck!

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
BEATING PLASMODIOPHORA BRASSICAE TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.
Gardeners growing on plots that have been used for vegetables for many years, especially long-established allotments, often suffer from Plasmodiophora Brassicae. In case you’re alarmed, it’s not some dreadful disease afflicting old gardeners but, a soil dwelling fungus, more commonly known as club root, which affects most members of the brassica genus. Brassicas, often called the ‘cabbage family’, include Brussel sprouts, cauliflowers, broccoli and kale as well as cabbage. You may also be surprised to learn that quite a few other crops, for example turnip and radish, are also brassicas. If you had club root you’ll know the tell-tale signs. Affected plants struggle to grow and in severe cases die. Digging the plants will reveal swollen and distorted ‘clubbed’
roots. Some brassicas, particularly cauliflowers, are very susceptible. Others, notably kale and swedes, are not much troubled. Levels of club root may vary across the plot meaning some areas are relatively free of the disease whereas other parts are heavily infested. Wet conditions and acid soil increase the likelihood of attack, whereas an alkaline soil decreases it.
LIME TIME Because alkaline conditions inhibit club root the traditional remedy has been to apply lime. This certainly helps, but is not always successful, especially when growing prone brassicas such as cauliflower. There are no chemical control methods available to gardeners to combat club root so, in addition to liming, organic growers like me also rely on ‘rotation’: that’s moving crops every year so that there’s at least a three year interval before they return to the same piece of ground. Liming and rotation have generally worked well for me in keeping club root at bay, but like many gardeners I’ve still had sporadic outbreaks. In
the last ten years or so new club root resistant varieties of some brassica crops have become available. Because I’m never certain whether club root will strike, I’ve been keen to try these out. Those I’ve grown so far are: Brussel sprout – ‘Crispus’ Cabbage – ‘Kilaton’ Calabrese (broccoli) – ‘Monclano’ Cauliflower –‘Clapton’ Red cabbage ‘Lodero’ All these have grown well for me without a trace of club root, even on parts of the plot where I’ve previously had problems. Clapton, in particular, has revolutionised cauliflower cultivation. I’ve always found cauliflowers difficult, possibly because of low levels of club root weakening the plants. Clapton has changed this. Over the last few of years I’ve grown more quality cauliflowers than in the last twenty.
THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL The only downside to the new club root resistant varieties is that the seed tends to be expensive in comparison to non-resistant brassica types. What’s more, the number of seeds in a packet is limited: 30 seems to be the quantity widely offered. Probably because of the expensive seed, I’ve not yet seen
club root resistant varieties available for sale as plants in garden centres. Growing your own from seed seems to be the only option. Club root will always be a menace but, through liming, rotation and, most of all with the use of new resistant varieties, Plasmodiophora Brassicae is easier to beat than ever.

An ethos to be reckoned with... Lamel Beeches Care Home is a beautiful building, parts of which are over a hundred years old. It provides residence for 41 older people, located on a quiet street near the University of York. Care Home Manager, Rachel Barber, describes Lamel Beeches as ‘not just a home, but a community’ and there’s plenty of evidence to back her up too. Activities are frequent, often and thoughtful. From weekly Choir visits, Little Green Rascals activity vists, tea and coffee club with University of York students, Poetry readings from the York Poetry Society, Song box - a pilot scheme where families are encouraged to come in with their own children to listen to music and socialise with residents, animal visits, performances from the Harlequin Choir, and music workshops with MEG from the University of York. Resident Maureen and her daughter Julie offer two key factors they love about the residential and nursing
50
home: “the staff are extremely caring” and “we really like the ethos of the place”. This resonates with Rachel’s description of the home: “A dynamic lively place with extremely caring staff.” “It’s great that people are not just hearing it from us that we are really caring - I’ve seen evidence of that many times but it’s nice to be supported by residents saying that too.” Rachel adds. The not for profit home scored good across the board with CQC, but Rachel is sure they’re ready for ‘outstanding’ grades, with the right encouragement and guidance. The home has no closed hours and friends and families are encouraged to visit whenever they feel like it. Rachel is keen for people looking to move to a care home to come and see for themselves. They can arrange to spend time at Lamel Beeches before making a decision –by calling to arrange an appointment for staff to show them round. “People are much more likely to settle in quickly if they’ve made that choice themselves. I want people to choose, and think actually, this is the place I feel most comfortable.” Amenities are no object and the home has no shortage of facilities: dining room, hairdressing area, lounge, landscaped gardens, library, and keeping up with the times Wifi in communal areas. Community engagement and quality time are key.
Rachel is keen to encourage one to one chats between staff and residents and welcomes groups or volunteers who would like to get involved to get in touch. n Lamel Beeches is owned by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, a charity that specialises in the provision of housing and care. To enquire about looking around the home, call 01904 416904 or email marketing@jrht.org.uk www.jrht.org.uk/community/lamel-beeches-york

H O WA R D’ S C O LU M N
OUT OF OFFICE Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. I'm not here right now. As my wife has just given birth to yet another baby (we'd be in trouble if we were Chinese) I've taken a bit of time off to focus on the fam, and also make a good first impression on the new wee fellow. Might wear a tie. Anyway, in my absence I decided to write this month's column in advance, detailing some recent thoughts I'd had about parenting; namely, the birth of our first child and how I dealt with it. You see, women have nine months to get used to the idea of becoming a parent, while I only had the time it took for someone to hand me my newborn baby. Sitting there by the birthing pool way back in late 2010, watching my in labour in the water, I regretted not investing a larger variety of my feelings during the pregnancy. I've always had the tenancy to believe that time is not really a thing, and that although
52
I'm told that something will be happening very soon, and that the thing is a definite certainty, I never believe it.
SHOWER SURPRISE And so, as I stood in the shower nine months before, after my wife excitedly slammed her hands against the shower screen and blurted out, “I'm pregnant, Howard!” (having just secretly piddled on a pregnancy test while I lathered, rinsed, repeated) I didn't really believe that I was going to be a father. How could I? The only thing on my agenda for that day at work was 'Look busy.' For her, the following eight and a half months involved planning, thinking,
dreaming, writing, meditating, excitedly jumping on the spot while holding hands with a friend, and basically mentally preparing for the forthcoming huge change. All that, while also growing an entire other person inside of her. Meanwhile I nodded along, talked with her the best way I could, said that everything sounded great, and painted the spare bedroom and sort of purply-pink. All these acts of parental-preparation were done robotically; as if I was acting in a play about a chubby idiot who had gotten his wife pregnant. Imagine a Richard Curtis film, but written after Richard Curtis had had a stroke and dictated the dialogue to a chimp.
“I WAS ACTING IN A PLAY ABOUT A CHUBBY IDIOT WHO HAD GOTTEN HIS WIFE PREGNANT.”
NEW PERSON So there I was, in October 2010, being handed my new daughter. My daughter. The time in the birthing pool room had tickled down the temporal plug hole quickly from my perspective.
TRANSITION I immediately took off my damp t-shirt and prepared to take hold of her for the first time. This was one of the things I'd be told about; skin to skin contact with the baby as soon as possible. While my wife
YOUR FAMILY
So my wife's final push, which revealed the creamy pale form of a tiny person, just happened. Like sneezes just happen. Like when a bird hits your living room window. But this bird was my daughter, and the window was the pool. But the window gently received the bird. And the bird gasped and was oddly beautiful despite being weirdly gross. This is an awful metaphor. I'd gone from Howard (you know, Howard? That guy we know) to Ava's daddy (you know, Ava? That lovely little girl with the strawberry blond hair. Her dad) in an instant.
manoeuvred herself in the pool to expel the placenta (something else I'd been told about, and something I really wanted to get a look at as a friend told me it resembled a dead facehugger from Alien), I took possession of our little girl, holding her wet, quickly-turning-pink body to my bare chest. I think It was my mother-in-law who took a photo of this moment; a picture that has often been shown off with the unspoken implication of 'look how loving and natural a father Howard is.' But every time I look at it I can still her my own voice in my head screaming “ARGH WHATS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IM SCARED!” So loving, so natural. But I held her, held her close. She squirmed and wriggled a bit, and did that unfocussed blank stare that newborns do... but she didn’t cry. I could feel her intense warmth burning into me, the gentle pressure of her oh-so-tiny fingers on my skin, and the smell of her head. Aaaaaaaand... CLICK I was someone’s dad. I enjoyed the sensation so much that I’ve since done it three more times.

Risande shine! We hear from York Yoga Studio about the many benefits of their morning sessions. When you think of practising yoga, you might picture coming to an evening class, after you have finished work, making your yoga practice the last thing you do in your busy day. This can be a wonderful time to come to your mat. To just unwind after a stressful day, getting out of your head and back into your body, can be the perfect antidote to an over-busy life. But maybe there’s a way to put the brakes on your runaway lifestyle BEFORE it gets to the point where you need an antidote. Many of us don’t have the luxury of coming to a morning class, but if you do, even once a week, it can make a huge difference to your entire day.
and mindful way. Yoga energises your circulation, strengthens your muscles and heightens your senses. When we become aware of the vitality of our bodies, and experience the connection between our bodies and our minds, we are motivated to make healthy choices the rest of the day. These choices give us power and when we feel more powerful, we are more powerful. Building physical strength and balance gives us confidence and composure. So when offered a donut at mid morning, maybe we’ll take it and maybe we won’t, but we will have set ourselves up to make the healthy choice by deliberately taking care of ourselves in a positive way.

For starters, it feels good after the long night of physical rest for your body to stretch and to move in a deliberate
54
And of course, how we approach our morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. If you can spend some time focusing on your breath, cultivating mindfulness and tuning into an awareness of the world around you, this may change your whole mindset. How many of us wake up with our heads already buzzing with half formed thoughts and anxieties about what lies in the hours ahead? Imagine how the rest of your day might go if the first thing you accomplish is to slow down your
breathing, quietening the mental chatter and stilling your mind, body and spirit. If you go into the challenges of your day already calm and composed, it will be much easier for you to hold onto that sense of inner peace. This is the benefit that a morning practice that includes meditation can bring to your day. Of course, many of us aren’t able to come to a morning class, and here at York Yoga Studio we are committed to offering a wide range of times and styles so that you can find a class that is perfect for you, whether you seek decompression at the end of the day, or the perfect way to start it. Yoga is more than just the physical practice – it is a discipline for the mind and the body, informing our actions, our attitudes, our relationship with others and with ourselves. It teaches us to rein in our anxious and critical thoughts, and to take joy in the present moment. It is a wonderful way to both set forth and to close on the adventure of your day! n Visit www. yorkyogastudio.co.uk
