YORK LIFE
Why hello there! Another month, another egg-cellent issue of Your Local Link. And can you believe that it’s April already?! We’re into the second quarter of 2019; and the most cracking one so far: it’s Easter! And you know what that means? Santa. Only yolking of course – chocolate! It’s not just about Easter eggs though – so we decided to share a little poem with you to get you into that April spirit, and pop some spring into your steps. Welcome to April – the month has begun, Just watch out for tricks on day number one, You’ll have to be fooled before 12 – that’s the rule, But tricks after that show it’s them that’s the fool;
Then on the 7th it’s World Health Day, And Easter bank hols are just two weeks away; Any excuse to eat chocolate galore, And no school or work for a day – maybe more; So keep your copy of Link close at hand,
For it’s full of events so your month won’t be bland, From Easter Egg Hunts at Castle Howard, To Burton Agnes Hall’s Easter Trail, we’ve heard; That York is best place to spend your springtime, With food and activities that are simply sublime.
Have a wonderful Easter break – we’ll see you next month! The Your Local Link team SARAH

What’s inside COVER STORY:
COLUMNS:
EASTER AT YORK’S CHOCOLATE STORY.
16-17. KRYSTAL’S GEMS. The grass is always greener on the other side. That’s what they say, right? So if you’ve lived in one place all your life (or the majority at least), then it’s very easy to slate it and believe there’s more to life in another city. However, as a proud York resident born and bred, Krystal’s keen to defend her hometown.
Here are two words that go together like cheese and biscuits. Or fish and chips. Or Ant and Dec. Chocolate. And Easter. We’ve never had a better excuse to gorge on the decadent cocoa-y goodness than Easter (apart from a certain Advent of course, but we can’t talk about that C-word until at least October), and York’s Chocolate Story have lots of goings-on to celebrate this springtime spectacular. Features:
22-23. TIME TRAVEL. We’re investigating a part of York that no longer exists in any shape or form… probably because it’s a slightly darker part of its history. Discover everything there is to know about Bagnio – otherwise known as the Turkish Bath House.
18-19. TREASURE HUNT. We’re Fulfilling our Treasure-Hunting duties this month by taking you to Fulford – where you can spot a couple of famous names and one or two iconic features!
10-11. YORK LIFE. Rachel Ragg’s gone all political on us – she’s talking yellow stickers. You know, the ones that you get on fresh food in the supermarket when they’re about to go out of date. Sometimes you’ll get a right bargain like a beautiful bunch of flowers… other times you’ll just collect a bunch of tat.
Our shiny website, www.yourlocallink.co.uk, is filled with original content that you won’t find in the magazine. This month, check out…

YORK LIFE
AND LIFE IN GENERAL
It would be fair to say that I have never been what you might call political. Greenham Common, the Miners’ Strike and sanctions against South Africa passed me by. My only brush with politics when I was a student came in the form of a righton friend who refused to buy a large box of stolen Kit-Kats in a pub. Not because they were stolen, but because they were made by Nestlé (who had apparently committed some kind of crime, though I’m still not quite sure exactly what it was).
movement was in the old Co-op petrol station shop on Tadcaster Road some time ago. Seeking fresh food for a guinea pig, I suddenly spotted a bag of peppers for mere pennies one Sunday evening. Well, who could resist?
It never occurred to me that Gilet Jaune consumables were fit for humans too until I found myself in M&S Simply Food on Lawrence Street. I was seeking a last-minute convenience supper - again on a Sunday night - when my beady eye was caught by a bag of mango slices on However, my Inner Politico has finally their use-by date for next to nothing. And been awakened. By the Gilets Jaunes. I know there are news reports of unpleasant there was no point at all buying a full-price goings-on over the Channel - but this is all, Chicken Jalfrezi when they were offering an expiring Count On Us ravioli for next obviously, Fake News. Because the real to nothing. Gilets Jaunes are here in Yorkshire. And I am going to be barging my way to the From that moment, I was a fully signed-up head of the queue, thank you very much. member of the Gilet Jaune Movement. Never mind all this ‘setting cars on fire’ nonsense that the media are reporting. Everyone knows that the real Gilets Jaunes are those miraculous Yellow Stickers that appear at the end of the day in supermarkets. My first encounter with the Gilet Jaune
10
And once you know about the Gilet Jaunes, there’s no going back. Planning to hold a dinner party? Some Yellow-Stickered Chicken Teddies will do nicely. Followed by Lime-Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise. Disgusting? Not at all: it’s reduced from
£5 to 35p, so it will be particularly tasty. Preferably if served with Yellow-Stickered custard. You need to eat a lot of this in one sitting, so it goes to waist rather than waste. Waste is, of course, the one potential hazard of Gilet Jaune membership. I am thinking here of the bargainful 30p cauliflower I bought in the Pavement branch of M&S, which did eventually turn into soup (albeit through neglect, unfortunately). It’s probably just as well I didn’t follow my instincts and buy two. This is, of course, why we have freezers. My own freezer is a shrine to Yellow Stickerdom. Bread-related items feature particularly strongly. Never mind the fact that I don’t like Yum-Yums (whatever they are): they were Yellow Stickered, so deserve to be frozen for six months before being thrown away. It is strange that things previously deemed beyond the pale suddenly become attractive once they have a Gilet Jaune slapped on them. Would I normally buy Co-op washing powder? No I jolly well wouldn’t. Or I wouldn’t have done, until said Co-op was taken over by someone else, and started selling it off for 21p per box. Whereupon it became so covetable that I suddenly needed 10 boxes. In fact, it’s amazing how many unconscionable things start to look attractive once they start sporting a Gilet Jaune. Veganism - not something I would otherwise contemplate - becomes strangely alluring once there’s a Yellow Sticker slapped on a tofu, aubergine and cranberry jelly soufflé (troufflé?) Plus I suddenly realised how much I loved
COLUMNIST
Rachel Ragg
my children once the Valentine’s Day chocolate heart lollipops were Yellow Stickered (were £2; then 25p). It’s not just food, either. Take fake Christmas trees. A crime against pine-trees - but once they are Yellow Stickered, I’ll have three of them, thank you (one to use, and two more just in case). Clothes, too, become must-have items once they are bearing the Gilet Jaune. Never mind the fact that they will end up as unworn items in the St Leonard’s Hospice Shop on Scarcroft Road: the fact remains that they were absolute bargains, so it doesn’t matter if nobody ever actually wore them (or even removed the Gilet Jaune from them). The only bothersome thing about the Gilet Jaune movement, though, is why it isn’t tailored entirely to my needs. Why is Chanel scent never Yellow Stickered? Why doesn’t Bang Hair start offering YellowStickered Haircuts at the end of the day? Come to think of it, maybe they’ll start once they’ve read this. So if you see a lone female lurking around Low Petergate clad in a yellow reflective jacket, you’ll know why.

Want to know more? Go to www.yourlocallink.co.uk to read extended versions of this month’s horoscopes!
Horoscopes 21ST MAR - 19TH APR Totally unexpected surprises on or around your birthday put a smile on your face, which leaves you in a good mood for most of the month. Last minute journeys lead to important family reunions, and there should be some satisfyingly good news on the work front. Romance and relationships go through a very harmonious period, and if oil needs to be poured over troubled waters then the oil can is in your hand. This is a healing period, and as such, not only can old emotional wounds be healed, but if there have been health problems or concerns then you should now find yourself on
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY With the advent of spring your moods and levels of energy increase significantly, and you’ll be busy doing things you’ve put off all winter. Work projects auger well and there could be career moves afoot for ambitious people who like a challenge. Travel plans being made late in the month, and there will be in depth conversations about long term finances.
12
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
A busy period on the social scene, and this should bring opportunities to meet new people who will make your evenings more exciting and make the days seem brighter. There is an obvious romantic connotation here, but it goes further than that: parties, business networking, and who you know being more important than what you can do!

the mend – with a lot more positive energy to spare. The 3rd, 4th and 5th are great days for putting some old ideas into action for the first time, and possibly for becoming a bit more independent in your working life. Hobbies could earn you money, and part-time jobs lead to something more rewarding. At the other end of the month, around the 28th, 29th or 30th, there is a possibility that you might become just a little bit accident prone, so mind how you go. Check anything and everything to do with insurance and make sure cars are in working order.
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL Ladies of the sign might have a problem with ex-partners who are looking for some payback, while gentlemen of the sign will be far too busy in pursuit of career ambitions to notice what is going on around them. Both the guys and the girls need to pull back a bit, find some objectivity, and if something needs to be put right to balance a score, now is the time to do it.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
A mood of nostalgia hits people of a certain age, but it’s no good dwelling on the past when you should be considering your future – both the short and the long term. Having said that, you can learn much from past mistakes, and something occurs between the 17th and 21st that makes these words of mine make a lot more sense!

ARIES
A STROLOGIST
April should be a good money-making month, but I reckon you’re going to be working hard to get it, and there is some risk of stretching yourself a bit too far if you insist on burning the candle at both ends. Sound and sensible advice from a very close friend will not sound good in your ears, but you’d be a bit of a twerp if you ignored it completely.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
In some ways, quite a thoughtful month in which you’ll be inclined to judge people more by their actions than their words. Some disappointment around the 11th is compensated for around the 19th or 20th, and it will be a clear case of the opening door being more advantageous than the one that closed.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV A lover or partner (or someone who would like you to see them in this light) will be going out of their way to please and impress, but you are a Scorpio, and it wouldn’t be the first time you looked a gift horse in the mouth. Nevertheless, a promise will be made around the 12th or 13th and if you choose to put the promise to the test, you won’t be disappointed. 22ND NOV
SAGITTARIUS - 21ST DEC
All domestic and family matters are at the top of your agenda at this time and there may well be some big changes within family dynamics. You look back with sadness over losses and disappointments, but this releases you to find fresh confidence and vitality when you look
forwards. Property sales could be relevant, leading to greater financial security. 22ND DEC
CAPRICORN - 19TH JAN
Quite a lot of stress on the work scene, but take a few big breaths and measure your energy, and you should be able to keep your head above water. Lots of love and care coming from lovers and partners, and if there are areas of friction, it’ll be on the subject of money – not so much where it’s coming from, but how it’s being spent.

Quite an easy-going month for most of you – those who wish to preserve the status quo. Krystal’s gems
In defence of staying in your hometown Being mean about your hometown mates’ lives is petty and I’m bored of it... It’s cool to slag off your home town, isn’t it? I know this because I’ve heard it in person from many friends and seen endless jokes on social media. As someone who is very much still living in their own hometown, and stumbled upon several offensive tweets about it this week, I feel inclined to defend my decision. When I’ve listened to people rant, the general consensus seems to be that by moving away, you’ve singlehandedly made yourself morally and intellectually better than anyone who happened to
“I left my hometown, once, for a whole year in my teens. It was comfortably the worst year of my life.”

stay. You’ve got dreams, you’re a real thinker, the people in your hometown are sooooo narrow minded. I left my hometown, once, for a whole year in my teens. It was comfortably the worst year of my life. People might assume that it was amazing: sunshine, swimming pools and learning to speak Spanish. My fondest memory was actually the one where I helped my parents pack up the van to come back to England for good. I remember a heady mix of relief, anticipation, and a fully charged MP3 player for the road. This gave me a grasp of what’s it’s like to leave your hometown and puts me in good stead to say that it didn’t make me better at anything other than conversational Spanish. I also gained a deep rooted resentment towards people who are mean about immigrants or those who unwittingly encourage their kids to be. I reckon that if you pay close attention
to home haters, you can pop them into one of these four categories. Home haters were: A) Kept on too tight of a leash by their parents when they were growing up. B) Painfully intelligent/talented and had to go to a city that could provide opportunities that wouldn’t waste their talents. C) People who have a complex about being ‘interesting’. D) Some people just had genuinely bad times and it’s *totally fine* to want to leave that behind.
and with far less effort. I’m jealous, too.
All of the above reasons are okay and valid. Where you are is your prerogative. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with moving away from your home town, but slating the people who are happy where they are suggests that it might well be the mover-away-er that’s not happy, instead of the people back home. Because we know deep down that they’re the real winners. If life is about being happy, and satisfied they got there far before any of us did
So, leave the home bodies alone, we’re doing absolutely fine. We actually live in your boring hometown, which is currently being pitched as the new-super-interesting-town to someone else’s hometown mates. York is absolutely perfect and anyone who thinks any less is a fool.
I’ve thought a lot about moving to other big cities, and why I would consider doing it. The main answer would be because a lot of my mates have done it, and it seems like a good thing to do, if only once. The trouble with this method is that it could also be applied to, in no particular order: smoking weed, shoplifting and skiving off work. If we drill it down: it’s not actually a good reason to do anything, is it?
I’ll probably explore the world, once a year, two weeks at a time, from a hotel I’ve saved up six months for. And I think I’m okay with that.

We’re Ful of beans to be going to such a wonderFul village. Welcome to Fulford.
Treasure Hunt
Here we go – we’re going to start near the end of Main Street, on the road opposite The Bay Horse pub. Stand so you’re facing The Bay Horse, and turn to your left. Start walking down Main Street. You’ll spot Fulford Cycles on your left. • What iconic piece of art can you see above the shop? • What traditionally British service box will you find on the grass verge? • As you approach the corner, what shop will you find – and what do they sell?
3
Keep walking down Main Street until you spot an island in the road, after a block of flats. Cross here to the other side of Main Street and continue walking in the same direction you were previously.
2 Continue down Main Street, crossing roads as you go.
• What’s the name of the hotel on your right? • A famous composer and musician used to live there – who was it?
4
Continue walking until you reach the pedestrian crossing. Cross here to continue on Main Street – wait for the green man! • What’s the name of the church on the right hand side? • As you walk down, you’ll spot Adams House. What’s the number on the door?
Cheeky Chicken Cottage 18
• What day of the week is The Plough’s quiz night?
When you reach the end of the pavement, turn right onto Broadway. Walk down until you reach the collection of shops.
5
• What’s the name of the gift shop? • Which charity has a shop next to the Co-op?
Continue walking down Broadway until you reach The Link. As this street shares its name with us, we’re going to turn right down here! Keep walking straight down the path through Grants Avenue and eventually turn right onto Heslington Lane.

• You’ll spot a left turn further ahead onto Fulfordgate. Don’t go that way as it’s a dead end – but what sits at the end of it?
7
Keep walking down Heslington Lane and cross the road at the zebra. Continue to your right down Heslington Lane. • You’ll spot a road leading left called School Lane. What does it lead to?
8
Cross the road and continue as you were. You’re back at the pedestrian crossing – turn left back onto Main Street. Enjoy the fresh air! • What’s the name of the café in the fish and chip shop? • As you keep walking past The Bay Horse, you’ll see a residential road to your left – which Hollywood actress does it share its name with (give or take a letter)? You’re back to where you started! Well done – you can now either cross the road at the island to return to the side you started on, or wait for a No. 7 bus to take you to the Designer Outlet for a spot of shopping. Or maybe pop into The Bay Horse for some lunch?

FIVE ALIVE (OR DEAD!)
Welcome to The York Dungeon. A place where history comes alive in the most gruesome, terrifying, and immersive way. With 10 individual shows and a themed bar where you can recover afterwards, The York Dungeon is a fantastic attraction that’s not to be missed. And with a bit of luck you won’t have to miss it – because we’ve got FIVE annual passes to give away! That’s right – FIVE! Maybe you’ll want to experience the treatment of the Black Death? Or perhaps you’d like to see exactly how people used to be tortured?

Easter wouldn’t be Easter without chocolate. Whether you like yours in the form of a big egg, small egg, or bunny (or just straight out of the wrapper because why mess about?), there’s no better place to go than York’s Chocolate Story. You’ll learn how the humble cocoa bean transforms into our favourite delicious treats, as well as creating your very own chocolate! If you’ve never been before, then now’s the perfect time to rectify that – and if you have then hey, it’s Easter. Go again. In fact, we’re going to help with that: we’ve got a family ticket – that admits

l e v a r T e Tim Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE BAGNIO
You know us… we’d never bad mouth dear old York. However, sometimes we look to the past, see what York once possessed, and feel a bit envious of our ancestors. One such local attraction that is now lost to history was the Bagnio, or Turkish Bath House, off Coney Street. It sounded pretty cool, and not just because the term ‘Bagnio’ meant ‘oriental brothel’. We wouldn’t blame you if you’d never heard of this building, demolished in 1924. No trace of it exists, and even the lanes and alleyways that led to it have been erased by subsequent development. However, if you’ve ever eaten at Bill’s restaurant on Coney Street and walked through the main entrance, you’ve retraced the steps of the ‘great unwashed’ from centuries ago, as this marks the exact location of Leopard’s Passage. So called as it passed alongside the Leopard Public House (Jessops, today), the lane led to the Bagnio, a baroque building created in 1691. It stood on land
22
immediately behind where Dusk sits today, and offered, as the London Gazette that year reported, “… all persons who desire the same may sweat and bath; and be cup’d (if they please) after the German fashion… paying 5s a piece.” Bargain! Cupping means massage, by the way.
HOT STUFF Unlike the Roman style of bath house (which York also once famously possessed), Turkish Baths in the 17th century placed the emphasis on hot water over steam, and customers could submerge themselves in private and communal bathing pools. Other innocent services were offered, such as oil treatments, but Bagnios were generally considered seedy places, frequented by prostitutes.
printed copies of the York Courant newspaper from here, the first steps to cementing Coney Street’s importance in York’s media history – the Yorkshire Herald and later the Evening Press would also be produced there.
Despite the attention the Baths would have received because of this, the building itself didn’t service the pleasurable desires of York for very long. In 1730 it became home to St Peter’s School – yes, THE St Peter’s School, the fourth oldest school in the world. In the early 18th century the school had only 20 pupils and had found itself on hard times, shifting from home to home. At least they could teach the kids swimming there. The school moved to another building in 1735, allowing Alexander Staples to move his printing business in. They
LITERARY IMPORTANCE Anne Ward took over the building in 1759, becoming owner of the York Courant and increasing the paper’s circulation. She also used her printing presses for other purposes, and it was here that ‘the’ York novel, Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy, was first printed. Copies were made within the Bagnio and then taken to No. 35 Stonegate (the one with the old Bible still hanging outside) to be sold. Despite finding use in other ways, one of the baths was still in operation until 1818, meaning a steady flow of customers were making use of the
YORK LIFE
Because it occupied very desirable land behind the busy commercial thoroughfare of Coney Street, The Bagnio was demolished in 1924. Other than Bill’s door marking the Coney Street entrance, the glass-roof section of The Drawing Board, next to Dusk, marks the New Street entrance. Listen carefully, once the drunks have staggered off late at night, and you can still hear the hiss of steam and the call of the prostitutes. Not really.
facilities during the printing press era. Following its closure, the Bath House building spent most of the 19th century empty and crumbling, then home to Ward’s Organ Builders. Clearly 200 years of heavy and varied use was beginning to take its toll on the structure, and as photographed in 1910, it was run down and falling apart.
Still, it’s nice to know that, for all their mystique and secrets lost to history, our ancestors of this city loved to have a bit of fun while relaxing with friends at night. Just like us. Aww…

Local
Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.
It’s hard to believe that April represents the end of the regular season for York City. It feels like only two minutes ago I drove to Chorley for the first game of the season with a naïve arrogance at playing a club where I could literally park a mere 10 yards from the turnstiles. Let alone in a town arguably most famous for a fictional radio station whose advertising taglines, created by Peter Kay, are not suitable for printing in this magazine. Needless to say, some 90+ depressing minutes later, the Minstermen succumbed to a 1-0 defeat. Since then, Chorley have been top of the table for most of the season and York City have underwhelmed for a second successive campaign. At the time of writing the playoffs seem a bridge too far. Manager Steve Watson certainly seems to be making inroads at the club with a mini revival, leading to him deservedly winning February’s Manager of the Month award.
watching them race into a 1-0 lead and backing them throughout. The guy sat in front of me shouted “unlucky Rovers” at every opportunity, which was credible when a shot narrowly missed the target – but lost a bit of its significance when another shot cleared the stand and a player committed one of the worst foul throws I had ever seen. The supporter got a bit too giddy as the game drifted towards the end, as he boastfully said to his pal: “This is brilliant, I can’t remember the last time we won a game in a row”. Unfortunately he then spat out his Irn-Bru when Berwick scrambled home an 88th minute equaliser. In a bit of a Scottish football frenzy I found myself watching Hibs against Celtic in a pub, when I heard the most bizarre put-down of Scott Sinclair missing an early chance when someone shouted at the big screen: “he can only score with Rosie”. This was all in the week when Brendan Rodgers walked out on Celtic to become Leicester City manager, which the Scottish papers were imaginatively calling ‘Brexit’.

Local Sports So with York City just maybe heading in the right direction with Steve Watson at the helm and a new stadium on the horizon, the York City Knights are continuing their excellent season in the Betfred Championship. And hotly-tipped York boxer Michael Fafera recently won his third straight fight at Elland Road. It’s also good to see a few York schools representing the city with pride at county level. Starting with the Year 10 Boys Rugby team at Manor CE Academy, who were beaten finalists in 2017-18 Yorkshire Schools Rugby Union Cup, before tasting more success in this year’s Yorkshire Cup where they beat Hall Cross, Doncaster 50-0 in the first round. They came from behind to beat St John Fishers, Harrogate 28-24 in the last 16 before avenging a loss in the previous year to overcome Rodillian Academy
in the Quarter Finals – then coming up short in the Semi-Finals 31-17 to Ilkley Grammar School. Historically, Manor CE Academy haven’t had great success in the competition. So, this represented a fantastic achievement from the team who, off the back of this success, now have three players featuring in the North Yorkshire Development squad. At All Saints RC School, their Year 8 Basketballers have become the Champions of North Yorkshire after a fantastic unbeaten run in the finals – beating St Aidens 48-22, St Francis Xavier 34-20 and Ryedale 32-20. Coach Dave Gibson said it was a huge team performance and massive achievement, particularly considering they train in a small gym.
I thought York City supporters had it tough until I recently took in the Scottish League Two fixture between Albion Rovers and Berwick Rangers. A huge fixture in Coatbridge, a place my wife once described to me as the ‘Selby of Scotland’, between the country’s worst two teams (neither had won since November). HYPERACTIVE First there were cars. Then there were supercars. Now, there are hypercars. And they’re absolutely ridiculous. March saw the annual Geneva International Motor Show, and one of the big things to come out of it was Bugatti’s La Voiture Noire – a one-off creation designed to celebrate Bugatti’s 110th anniversary. This absolutely stunning piece of kit boasts an 8.0 litre W16 midengine generating an insane 1,500hp, and it’s been sold to a collector for, wait for it: Eleven. Million. Euros. Voiture Noire the world’s most expensive new car ever sold. While that’s an eyewatering amount of money that most of us can only dream of spending on an automobile, other people have gone one better. Or should that be 50,000,000 times better. That’s right – just last year a Ferrari 250 GTO sold for a whopping $70,000,000. If cars were celebrities, this one would be Michael Schumacher. It won the 1964 Tour de France, and then finished fourth in the 1963 Le Mans 24-Hour.
And get this – it’s never been crashed. So it’s rather precious to say the least. The Geneva International Motor Show first started in 1905, and is famous for revealing supercars to the many petrolheads that attend each year. Held in Geneva, Switzerland, people travel from all over the world to see the displays and exhibitions. Interested in seeing it for yourself next year? The Mended Drum, a pub in Huby, north of the City of York, has cause for celebration after being awarded CAMRA’s (Campaign for Real Ale) Pub of the Year for York and North Yorkshire 2019. This success story started with a small village pub that had been left derelict for years up until the Mended Drum opened in 2011. Managers Ricki and Lisa Brown have worked hard to provide regulars and visitors alike with a broad selection of gins, ales, one-off beers and a locally sourced menu for hungry guests to enjoy. The pub regularly puts on music acts, festivals and special events,

Cheers to that! always going the extra mile for those who set foot inside. CAMRA were particularly impressed with the pub’s warm and welcoming atmosphere and strong community ethos, raising money for local causes and becoming a meeting point for many village groups hosting resident pool and dominoes teams. The presentation of the Award will take place at the Mended Drum on 20th July by Christopher Tregellis, York CAMRA Chairman.n For more information call 01347 810264 or visit www.themendeddrum.com

LO C A L HEROES I’m often asked how Herbert Todd’s as a medium-sized independent electrical retailer can compete against the big online resellers. The short answer is by giving customers what they want – but what does that mean in the real world for me as the owner and buyer, or for you as the customer or potential customer? First and foremost I believe we have to be competitive on price, and this constant battle forms the major part of my job role. I have to ensure we’re getting the best deals from all our suppliers. You may wonder why the likes of NEFF, SMEG, Bosch, AEG, Hoover and all would want to give me a crack at the whip compared with the large online retailers and the answer is because we can give them a platform that the World Wide Web can’t. We can allow customers to get hands-on with their products and test them for themselves. The better-quality manufacturers value this customer interaction very highly and reward their better dealers for the service they offer. In turn this allows us to price match most of the products we sell against the national competition. But pricing is only the first part of the story. To be truly different to the big guys we not only need to be highly competitive with our pricing day-in-dayout, but we also need to back that up with the levels of customer service most larger companies can only dream of. We have more staff than most purely retailing products (or box shifting as some nationals would call it) – but that’s because I don’t just want us to be stood behind the tills the whole day. My staff want to interact with shoppers to

demonstrate what great products are out there and what they can do for you, without any obligation to buy! Further to that, I want to make sure we have the power to deliver your product when you want it (and not charge for that service) and the resources to sort out any post-delivery niggles, should there be any. I hope we have something for everyone – from great value everyday-priced appliances to integrated ovens; to OLED and QLED 4K televisions, you can pick up thousands of products on the same day from our warehouse at the back of the showroom at Monks Cross. Or, you can take advantage of our free local delivery with expert installation options on everything we sell, including built in appliances. Whatever you want, feel research online first. But give us a try before you buy – we’d love to see you in store soon. So, how do we compete? By looking after our customers; providing new technology, appliances and televisions at the right price; and with oldfashioned great customer service! Simples!
House about that? By Callum Willis York’s housing market has had some good news from HouseSimple who recently released stats showing an increase in property market listings since January. Despite all that’s happening with Brexit and the potential to affect banks offering mortgages, homeowners around the U.K are defying Brexit by keeping the housing market moving, especially here in York. According to recent stats from HouseSimple, York has seen the third biggest percentage increase of properties on the market in the U.K since the start of the year. With a 50.6% increase, York sits just behind Huddersfield and High Wycombe. The research places York above places such as Oxford, Aberdeen and Lancaster. Sam Mitchel, CEO of HouseSimple, said: “We are seeing a great deal of defiance from sellers, most noticeably in areas where regional economies are strong and affordability is not such an issue, such as Yorkshire and the North West. It’s certainly a great achievement for York!

It’s been said that different colours can influence your emotions in different ways. For example, shades of red and orange are meant to be bright, warm and eye-catching – while blue and green are fresh, calming and relaxing. We generally take colour schemes into consideration when we decorate our homes, but your outdoor space can be planned in the same way. Getting creative with colour isn’t only fun and rewarding but can also be good for mental health, so why not explore your creative side? Whether you’re wanting an area to relax in, or a vibrant space in which to entertain, choose colour schemes to suit the mood you are looking for. Do this by combining plants and garden accessories to create a garden that’s not just appealing to the eye, but also a haven for your health and wellbeing.
When planning your garden, consider all aspects – from the colour of your fences, walls and pots, to ornaments, garden furniture and other features. Think about how they combine with your favourite plants and flowers. For a warm and vibrant area to entertain in, choose colours containing red, yellow and orange. These are all colours that bring out warmth and energy. Place plants in blocks around a patio and match them with furniture in similar colours. You’ll produce a cheerful and welcoming place to socialise outside with family and friends. In contrast, you could also create an area that’s peaceful and relaxing by using cool colours such as blue, purple and green – and maybe add some white or silver hues for a calm and tranquil effect. Colour can be used in so many ways: from influencing your
perception of space, to drawing your attention away from eyesores, or brightening a shaded area. For example, if you have a long, narrow garden then placing bright red plants at the bottom can make them appear closer than they really are. All the while, planting blue flowers will look further away – giving the impression that the space is larger! Vibrant colours like red and yellow can attract your attention and draw the eye away from unsightly views that you’d rather ignore, while bright whites and gold can dazzle and brighten a shady spot. Obviously there’s more to choosing plants than just their colour – such as shape, size, suitability to your soil, site and season. But, at the end of the day, colour choice is a personal decision – and if you like it then that’s all that should matter!

Thirdly, do not sow if the soil is sodden. If it cakes your boots when walked on it’s too wet. Seeds sown in sticky conditions are at risk of rot, especially early in the season. Having said this, seeds need some moisture to germinate. In summer, if it is very dry and no rain is forecast, water may be needed. The best way to apply this is to dribble water into the bottom of the drills (shallow soil grooves into which most seeds are best sown) from the spout of a watering can. This is far more effective than sprinkling water wildly overhead, much of which will just evaporate. SOIL STRUCTURE
There’s really only two ways of starting most vegetable crops – either planting or sowing. Like many gardeners, wherever possible, I prefer planting. The majority of the crops I grow are grown from seed, but started in pots or trays – usually in a greenhouse. Mollycoddled in their first few weeks, the young plants are only put in the ground outside when big enough to better withstand perils such as slugs or unseasonal weather. THE SOW MUST GO ON The main crops I sow directly into the soil are carrots, parsnips, beetroot and peas. The first three are generally difficult to plant as they resent root disturbance. Even if transplant trauma
f
38
is minimised crops can be disappointing with growth sometimes stunted and roots forked and twisted at harvest. Peas are less fussy about transplanting but you need an awful lot of pea plants for a worthwhile crop. For me, growing so many is too laborious – so I prefer to direct sow.
the ground before early April. It’s sometimes advised to sow parsnips outside in late February – ignore any such advice, it’s a recipe for disaster! Except for a few peas, risked at the very end of March if the weather is kind, I delay outdoor sowings of parsnips and other crops until the middle of April.
Sowing directly into the soil can be tricky. There’s quite a lot that can go wrong, but there are some simple steps that can be taken to minimise problems.
DEPTH
TEMPERATURE First and foremost, don’t sow too soon. The soil temperature different crops need to germinate varies but it’s rarely warm enough to sow anything in
Second, do not over cover seed. A good rule of thumb is that seeds should be buried to no more than three times their size. Any deeper and they may not have the energy reserves to struggle to the surface. Some seeds, for example lettuce and celery/celeriac, need light to germinate and are especially vulnerable to sowing too deeply.
Fourthly, don’t over-prepare the soil. Although seeds won’t germinate in rough cloddy ground, don’t go for perfection and make the soil very crumbly. That ‘fine tilth’ beloved of old gardeners can be overdone. Very fine soil is vulnerable to slumping after rain, sometimes forming a hard crust, or ‘cap’, as it dries – which small seeds find difficult to penetrate. There are other things to consider when sowing outdoors, for example not sowing too thickly or, in my case, fending off scuffing cats or mining moles; but getting temperature, depth, moisture and soil structure right are four keys to success.

Q.
I’ve noticed my lawn has patches of yellow grass, and birds are pecking at it – leaving it looking a mess! Please could you give me some advice on how to fix the problem? This is most likely to be chafer damage. There are about five different types of chafer beetle – the grubs of these beetles are soft-bodied, white, C-shaped larvae and up to 40mm long. They also have a well-developed brown head and three pairs of thoracic legs – similar to the legs you would see on a caterpillar. The chafer grub feeds on roots, corms, tubers, fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants; but they also attack lawns, and this is what I think is happening in this case. Affected plants wilt, and eventually die, when the main roots become severed by chafer – which is what the yellow patches are. The birds are pecking as they like to try and eat the cockchafer grub, but often cause a mess pulling up patches of grass in doing so. Females lay eggs in summer and larvae hatch a few weeks later. Then they feed
underground on the roots until they’re ready to pupate, which is within a year for smaller varieties of chafe – but can take up to five years for the larger cockchafer. Infested lawns benefit from heavy rolling in the late spring to kill pupae and emerging adults, as well as adequate feeding and watering of the lawn. This will help to keep the grass as healthy as possible and encourage new growth. In worst cases you may benefit from reseeding the lawn in the spring to fill in the larger patches that have been created. With less chemicals on the market there are no longer sprays that treat the problem, however there is a natural alternative, called nematodes, for cock chafer beetle. The official name is ‘Steinernema carpocapsae’ and this is one of the best things available now, but only when the soil is wet and warm with a minimum temperature of 14C. It’s also strongly advised that you refrain from using chemicals for other things in the garden if you choose to do this, as the nematodes can be affected by pesticides like any other insect.

TRIPPIN’ My favourite school trip was the time we visited Creswell Crags. Thanks for asking. To the uninformed, Creswell Crags is essentially a bunch of caves near Worksop in which prehistoric people used to live. It was awesome. We explored the caves, looked at cave paintings, skimmed stones across the lake, and laughed at Karl Roberts when he pooed himself. We were eight. I mention it because recently I took my kids to Eureka, the children’s science museum in Halifax. It was also somewhere I visited on a school trip, around the age of ten, and I can confirm that, 27 years later, I still hate it.
MUSEUM OF ‘STUFF’ Now, I’m not about bad mouth one of Yorkshire’s great attractions (despite being located in the West Riding – by far the worst of all the Ridings). To be honest, Eureka is actually pretty good, and offers plenty of fun for all. It’s just that, for whatever reason, none of us enjoyed it all that much, due to a clash of ages, interests, or aversion to stimulus overload. Again, to the uninformed, Eureka is a museum that teaches kids everything from how sound waves work, to how a toilet flushes. There are also random sections which seem to have been included to fill a bit of space, like the ‘desert’ and the Yorkshire-themed mechanics garage. Altogether it is a bit random. SIGNS First, I didn’t like it because after just five minutes in there I felt like my brain had shut down. There are signs EVERYWHERE, from little ones telling you what light is, to big ones informing me where to park a buggy, what not to touch, what to touch, and how to escape. To a delicate flower like me,

Howard Mosley is a father of four, keen cyclist and professional marketer. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words. it was all too much, especially when added to the constant background buzz of children shouting, screaming, and demanding to go to the toilet. Then, my kids didn’t seem to be too bothered for a plethora of different reasons. My eldest daughter, eight, didn’t like the fact that there was ‘science’ everywhere. She’s not keen on science, as it tends to disprove the existence of unicorns, magic, and Odin (who is her favourite god at the moment). My eldest son, five, wasn’t massively enamoured either, because the science wasn’t specific enough. He had hoped there would have been a section called ‘Answers to Ezra’s Astonishing Questions’, where he’d discover exactly what he wanted to know that day. Instead, I had to answer the likes of ‘where is a dolphin’s penis?’ and ‘does the planet Jupiter hate us?’. HEAD-CASE Middle boy-child, three, was somewhat miffed by the presence of glass cases and safety barriers. Yes, that mechanised skeleton demonstrating the motion of the joints might be very accurate, but if Gatsby can’t yank at it, it becomes yet another thing that annoys him. Tiny little fists were slammed against glass and metal as the pint-sized nutter huffed and puffed at the outrage of it all. How dare the museum staff want to keep their

expensive exhibits intact! And that leaves recently turned one year old Fox. Although he seemed to enjoy himself while we were there, when I asked him in the car if he’d had fun, he just stared at me in silence, slowly dribbling. When I asked again, he gargled and pointed at a banana. I gave him the banana and asked once more, but he just ignored me, ate the fruit, then fell asleep. Clearly proof he hated Eureka. SOR-RIGHT Despite all that, I do recommend Eureka. SHOCK TWIST. It’s alright, but only if you can handle all the sensory input, the noise, the disproving of magic, the lack of dolphin penis/ planetary emotion information, and glass cases. If you can, get you and yours along to Halifax. It’s basically the only thing in Halifax worth visiting. But… if you sound more like me and my kids, get them off to Creswell Crags for a fun day out looking at bones, flints, and holes in the ground. A school kid might poo themselves, too!

WISH UPON THE STARS
And that’s exactly what you could be doing if you get tickets to The Best of York Music Festival this 26th May – rubbing shoulders with the stars of the York music scene. The Ambulance Wish Foundation are holding the festival for a second year, following the success of their 2018 event – and you won’t want to miss it. The festival will boast two stages – one main and one acoustic – as well as food stalls; an outside bar; fairground rides and plenty of family fun. This year will showcase main stage talent from Kelly Ann Bolland, The 5.15s, The Honours, and Flatcap Carnival to name a few; as well as We Shall Be Dreamers and Philomena on the acoustic stage. The Ambulance Wish Foundation
originally started in the Netherlands in 2006, and began life as a UK charity a whole 10 years later. As well as helping to make wishes comes true for people with terminal illnesses, they also strive to provide ambulances exclusively for children. And speaking of children’s ambulances, they’re also running a super special competition to help design one. All you have to do is create a group of friendly characters that could be used to decorate the ambulance – the winner will receive four VIP tickets to The Best of York Music Festival, and their entry will be on display. There will also be a £20 book token up for grabs for the runner up!
CAN YOU HELP? The Best of York Music Festival is in need of a corporate sponsor! If you’d like to get your company involved with supporting this incredible charity, and fantastic event, then please contact Serina at ambulancewishfoundation@gmail.com.

JUST FRIENDS Dear Daphne, I have a great guy friend that I’ve known since secondary school. We’ve always been close but I’ve never been attracted to him. He recently asked me if I would like to go on a date with him. It took me by surprise and I wasn’t very tactful in my rejection, I just laughed it off and asked if he was joking. He wasn’t. We haven’t spoken for a few days now - which is unusual, and I’m missing his company as a mate and don’t want him to feel like this changes our friendship. I’m not angry at him, I’m just really sad cause I’ve obviously hurt his feelings and I’m afraid I’ve ruined a friendship that I valued. I don’t know what to say to him to make things better. Should I just let him be or should I reassure him we can still be friends? Don’t dwell over your initial reaction because there’s nothing you can do about it now. Instead look at what you can do moving forward. Giving your friend a
46
little bit of time to stew isn’t a bad thing, they will be feeling a little bit disappointed and embarrassed. When they’ve had some time to process the rejection, consider sending them a message explaining that you don’t want them to feel embarrassed and explain how much you value their friendship. It’s worth keeping in mind that this isn’t explicitly your fault or something that you personally need to make right. Neither of you can help how you feel right now. Maturity and communication on both sides should enable you to get through it and remain friends. With a bit of luck it will become something you joke about in several years. Time heals all wounds!
MONEY MONEY MONEY Dear Daphne, My friend recently won a five figure sum on a scratch card. We’ve previously joked about the fact that if one of us won, we would give the other one a couple of grand to soften the blow. It’s been over a month and I can see that my friend has no intention of giving me anything like we’d always talked about. I could’ve done with it for repairs for my car but don’t know if I can say anything. Ahh buddy, hypothetical money makes people say that they would do all sorts of things that they wouldn’t actually do. Because it’s not real. I’m afraid you can’t expect that money, because you didn’t win it, it’s not yours. Put any ideas you guys had before your friend actually won into the bin and move on. Sorry!

EGGS-CELLENT! INTO THE WOODS
IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY, YOU’RE SURE OF AN ABSOLUTELY CRACKING CONCERT. Forest Live is a major outdoor live music series held every summer by Forestry Commission England. This year, it takes place in seven beautiful woodland arenas across the country – over 1.75 million people have attended a forest gig in the last eighteen years. With everything required for a great night out, including good food and drink, the concerts are renowned for their informal and relaxed atmosphere set to a spectacular forest backdrop. Monies raised from ticket sales help to sustainably look after the nation’s forests, for people to enjoy them and for wildlife to thrive. In this region, Forest Live 2019 takes place in Dalby Forest, near Pickering, and this year’s headline acts are: Paul Weller on Friday 28th June and Jess Glynne on Saturday 29th June. n For more information, and to book, visit www. forestryengland.uk/music or call 03000 680400.
