KEEP ROLLING
I saw the news and I heard people talking, but nothing prepared me for The Fear I got in the pit of my stomach when I saw the post apocalyptic scene at the local supermarket. No. Toilet. Roll. I have two and a half rolls at home. This isn’t when I’d usually restock, I leave it right down until the last one, because I’m not big on forward planning. Not when it comes to toilet roll. So, dear Reader, I see this barren metal desert, where the loo rolls should be, and I start doing the maths. Two and half rolls should last my partner
and I one week. But will it? What if one of us gets a tummy bug? What if I get a cold? WHAT IF SELFISOLATION IS ENFORCED AND I DIDN’T BUY ANY? WHAT ON THIS GODFORSAKEN EARTH WILL WE WIPE OUR ARS*S WITH?
The panic has got me good now. As soon as I get home I call my boyfriend, Pete, into the kitchen to make the announcement: “Asda has run out of toilet roll.” I stare at him, waiting for his solution. He laughs at me and walks back out of the kitchen. The thing is, Pete hasn’t seen the empty aisle. He hasn’t felt The Fear. He’s
EDITOR’S LET TER probably just seen it on the news and found it funny. He also doesn’t tend to need toilet roll as often as I do.
do run out of toilet roll, there’s always this wad of paper you’re holding right now.
So, with gritted teeth, I sleep on it. The next day Pete goes to the supermarket and, can you believe it; they’ve restocked. He grabs a nine pack. Nine will see us through. “Yes,” I think. The stockpiling wave washes over me and I know that we are prepared for whatever may come.
Sending resilience and optimism your way,
We’ve still got lives to live, people to see, events to attend and local businesses to support, and many of them are on these fine pages. Let’s keep washing our hands, and if you

Despite April being a “birthday” month for many of you, it looks like there are going to be times when it’s a bit of a slog. Routines are annoyingly predictable and there is a mood of frustration and impatience, which makes you want to break those old routines and do something wildly different. Between the 3rd and 10th you may get the chance to do
exactly that, so make the most of it! Partners and spouses act like a bit of a hand brake on a fast car; they’re nervous of any change to the status quo and, in lots of little ways, seek to slow you down. Without being patronising you need to talk to them – quietly and encouragingly – and firmly point out that while the status quo may be okay for them,
it’s no longer good enough for you. Some compromises need to be found, and can be found; otherwise you’ll be looking for a new motor with a more co-operative braking system. I don’t think there are going to be any kind of major arguments here, but there will certainly be some awkward, and potentially tense, conversations!
Travel aspects are strong for the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th – especially so if there are some important reunions on the horizon. The 20th or 21st is a “green light” period on the work scene, and you can look forward to some special celebrations on the 29th or 30th.

TH
APR - 20TH MAY
It might be grey and wet outside but your spirit is telling you that spring is here, and your emotions respond to this in a very positive way. A little bit of impulsiveness between the 4th and the 9th does you no harm, and overall there should be a bit of a boost to your social life. Finances aren’t brilliant, but they’re a darn sight better than they have been in the past!
ST
MAY - 20TH JUN
Younger members of the sign have loads of fun with anything and everything that has “new” stamped on it, which includes friends, jobs, and even romances! Older folks look for a quieter lifestyle, hanging on to old habits and traditions. Regardless of age, expect some changes to domestic routines between the 10th and the 15th, and again around the 21st.
ST
JUN - 22ND JUL
RD
April brings a very positive boost of energy and the urge to “spring clean” in just about every department of your life will be irresistible. As such, this is a month in which a lot of junk gets jettisoned, leaving you feeling a whole lot tidier and considerably lighter… this might even apply to diets and exercise regimes, so enjoy – if you can!
JUL - 22ND AUG
With the advent of the spring there is the acquisition of some clarity, both mental and emotional, and this in itself will go a long way in clearing obstacles from your pathway; providing you with a brighter and more positive vision of your own future. You get a firm grasp on what the really important things in your life are, and respond accordingly.

AUG - 22ND SEP
A bright and breezy month with a specific high point linked in with all the nines – the 9th, the 19th and the 29th. You may be tempted to push the boat out a bit, especially on the aforementioned dates, but why not? If there’s an element of fun and excitement in the air, you’ve worked for it – and you flaming well deserve it. So, don’t hold back!
Libra
23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
A moody start to the month caused by a sense of restriction. There are so many things you’d like to do, but commitments and duties tie you down. Something shifts mid-month when a friend or close ally shows you a way out, but you’ll have to be brave enough to break the egg that makes the omelette. If this leads to some family conflict, you must fight for your freedom.

OCT - 21ST NOV
Watch out for some disappointment when someone breaks a promise or betrays a confidence. You could fly into a justifiable rage, but far better to bide your time and reassess your options, for as one door closes, another surely opens. Some fairly strong feelings of domestic claustrophobia, so execute a change of routine. Take a bit more leisure time, and confront any problems you might be having in connection with sleep and diet. On a brighter note there is some encouragement from lovers and partners, and you can look forward to an important reunion between the 4th and the 13th.

JAN - 18TH FEB
DIY and home improvement schemes are on this month’s agenda, but you’ll still be itching for more major changes in your domestic lifestyle. Overseas interests become quite important and there’s a part of you that wants to go and find your own desert island. Partners and spouses find it hard to be sympathetic, because they don’t really know how you feel.

FEB - 20TH MAR
There could be some changes in financial priorities, which could easily tie in with changes to job routines. April is an optimistic month where money is concerned, but (a) you do need to work at getting back something that’s owed to you and; (b) resist the temptation to “lend” anyone a sum of money, no matter how small. This could easily lead to a compromised friendship. ,

YORK LIFE I hate waiting. I’m absolutely not impatient, I just hate waiting. And yes, there’s a difference. But at the moment, life seems to be a pretty big waiting game. Waiting for my house sale to complete. Waiting to collect my new car. Waiting for the bus because my car isn’t ready yet. Waiting to find out if I get coronavirus. Waiting for an idea to come to me for my column, but it didn’t, so I’m writing about waiting. Because I couldn’t wait any longer. Sigh. I mean, I don’t think I’m alone in having such a strong dislike for the process of watching the clock tick by. In fact, I don’t know anyone who specifically enjoys sitting around watching paint dry. But it’s bothering me enough at the moment for it to warrant being the centerpiece of my column.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE I hear this phrase often. Maybe because everyone knows I’m so impatient disinterested in waiting, and they’re all trying to inspire me into embracing the passing of time. Ain’t gonna happen. I’m one of those people that can’t sit still – ask anyone who knows me and you’ll find out that I have enough plans on a weekly basis to fill eight days. I perform in musicals that require regular rehearsals, attend weekly dance
classes, spend time with my two-yearold son, visit friends and family, take care of the standard daily ‘admin’ required of a 30-something year old, and even attempt to fit in the odd night out here and there. To add to the mix, I’ve also just signed for a new mortgage on a house and bought a new car. So I clearly manage my hatred of waiting by spending money I don’t have. Then guess what? I wait for payday. Yawn. Don’t get me wrong – I do appreciate the value in waiting patiently. We all love having a little countdown on our phones telling us how many days are left before our long-awaited holiday to Italy (although, ironically, I’d wait a few more months for that at the moment); and there’s nothing quite like the feeling of embracing a loved one that you haven’t seen in a really long time (just wash your hands afterwards). Additionally, time actually passes pretty quickly doesn’t it? We all get so hyped up about things – such as Christmas – and it always feels so far away… but then bam. Been and gone before you know it. Feels long now, but in the blink of an eye I’ll be curled up on the sofa of my new property, looking out the window at my new car, coughing into my elbow quarantined with coronavirus while zombies ravage the streets. Maybe not the last bit.
DON’T WISH IT AWAY One thing I have to constantly remind myself is that every day is a gift. I know, impeccably cheesy. But true. I’m often extremely guilty of being so impatient desperate for my eagerly awaited events to take place that I forget about the days in between. For example, I’m really looking forward to seeing the sensational Will Downing in concert, and I’m counting down the days. But thinking about the dulcet tones of Mr Downing doesn’t mean I should give my meal out with my friend on Saturday less attention. We’re all guilty of things like this. When coronavirus gets us all we’ll regret the lack of attention we gave our colleagues because we were too busy longing for the weekend. We’re all waiting for something here in York. Whether that’s the arrival of the new LNER Community Stadium (seriously WHEN?); the new York Festival with Lionel Richie, Westlife and Madness (seriously TAKE ME THERE); or for York City to get back into the Football League

(just… seriously…), time often keeps us on our toes. So, now that I’ve confessed to being impatient hard-of-waiting, it’s your turn. I wanna know what you’re looking forward to this year. Got a big birthday coming up? Seeing a relative you haven’t seen in FOREVER? Or are you just as excited as me for things like York Festival? JOIN THE CLUB
SING THE SAME TUNE
Fancy yourself as a bit of a Michael Ball or Katherine Jenkins? Maybe you’ve got a vibrato as smooth as honey, or maybe you just enjoy belting a tune out into your hairbrush at home – the Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company are having a refresh, and invite you to join them. Aside from adding operettas to their Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, the team are wanting to widen their membership by openly inviting anyone to sign up. This means they won’t be holding auditions for chorus members – so don’t worry about having to forgo a daunting X Factor-style induction. The group meets every Monday from 7.30-9.30pm at Huntington Methodist Church, and will perform a concert version of HMS Pinafore on Saturday 30th May. Audience members will be able to come and sing along. •If you’d like to have a go for yourself, get in touch by emailing info@jorvikgsc. co.uk.
GUIDING LIGHT
A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH When it comes to clubs for the younger readers, there are often plenty of choices. From football to youth groups, there’s always something to keep the children and teenagers of York busy. But there’s one group that you might not have thought about. B Company, part of the Yorkshire (North and West) Army Cadet Force, are based on Burton Stone Lane in Clifton, with additional branches in Strensall, Acomb, and Fulford. Youngsters, both boys and girls, can join as cadets once they’re in Year 8 and are aged 12 – and can stay until their 18th birthday. Being a cadet means training twice a week and learning a great deal of vital skills – as well as contributing to local communities. Training nights are free and most of the uniform is offered on loan – plus, cadets are able to take their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh for just £23. If that wasn’t enough, cadets are also able to undertake BTECs and ILM qualifications, in subjects ranging from Leadership and Team Skills, to Effective Team Member Skills. •For more information, visit www.armycadets.com.
HAVE A BALL
Did you have a brilliant time Guiding or Scouting when you were younger? Maybe you didn’t go but have little ones that do – and quite like the concept for yourself? Well, a little-known fact is that an 18+ Guiding group exists in the form of the Trefoil Guild – and you could be a part of it. With over 20,000 members in more than 1,100 Trefoil Guilds throughout the UK, you’re sure to meet likeminded people wanting to share in the thrill of adventure and personal development. As the Trefoil Guild is a branch of Girlguiding, you can make the Guide Promise to help other people (although this isn’t compulsory); and you might even find yourself going on to share your skills and lead other groups, such as Rainbows, Brownies or Guides. And there’s a group near you – at the Thanet Road Bowling Club in Acomb – where members meet on the second Thursday of every month (apart from August when they go on an outing, and December for their Christmas dinner). •So if Guiding sounds like something you’d like to get involved in, then contact
When it comes to ball-related social activities, there are plenty to opt for. From tennis to football; ten-pin bowling to golf – you might think you’ve heard of them all. But what about pétanque? Similar to that of lawn bowls, the aim of the game in pétanque is to get your balls – known as boules – closer to the target ball, or ‘jack’, than your opponent. Originally formed in France in the early 1900s, the name pétanque comes from the expression pès tancats – meaning ‘feet fixed’. This is because one of the key rules involves throwing your boule while standing inside a circle. So, now you’ve got the gist you’re probably wondering how you can have a go yourself, right? Well have no fear – because a pétanque club exists in York! Held at Huntington Sports and Social Club every Thursday afternoon at 2.30pm (weather permitting), the small group play for fun and are always welcoming of new members – young and old; first-timers and experienced. •The new season starts on 23rd April and you don’t need to bring any special clothing

TimeTravel THIS MONTH: THE NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS RAILWAY
We’ve got an extra special edition of Time Travel for you this month ladies and gents, because we want you to get involved. And while we always encourage your letters and phone calls (or ‘tweets’ and ‘likes’ if you’re a digi-Linker), this month’s call to action actually goes one step further and comes from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway themselves. Eager to find out more? Read on…
STEP BACK IN TIME The North Yorkshire Moors Railway exists today as a stunning and integral part of Yorkshire’s beautiful heritage, and we’re very fortunate that we live on the doorsteps of some of the most breathtaking views in England. But did you know how it all began? Unsurprisingly, the recorded history of this iconic attraction dates back to 1832, when the Whitby and Pickering Railway was built in a bid to save the whaling and shipbuilding town of Whitby from national decline. The line went through many changes over the

years, becoming the York and North Midland Railway from 1845-1854; the North Eastern Railway from 1854-1923; London and North Eastern Railway from 1923-1948; and finally British Railways from 1948-1965. Back in June of 1967, a bunch of locals decided to found the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Preservation Society in a bid to continue the operation of the Grosmont and Pickering line. They took it upon themselves to carry out maintenance on the line (with permission, of course); and would host ‘Steam Galas’, where steam trains were permitted to run exclusively for the society’s members. Before long, the society’s members transformed it into a charity so no one could take over the railway for personal gain, and the group expanded rapidly. The founders of the NYMR were confident that the right amount of voluntary help would be enough to succeed in their mission, and they certainly weren’t short of help – today
Makers of the deal
there are more than 550 volunteers on board. Day to day operation requires the work of both paid and voluntary staff, and the visitors, of course, help to preserve one of the world’s greatest railway experiences. It’s not just about the brilliant train journeys either; these days the NYMR offers everything from special dining services to photography workshops – and even weddings!
FUTURE PROOF It’s a massive thanks to the hundreds of volunteers and workers that stopped at nothing to make sure the incredible North Yorkshire Moors Railway is what it is today. But there’s so much more to be discovered about its past – and that’s where you come in. The NYMR are looking to fill in the gaps in its history with the help of the Oral History Project, which is part of Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey. This exciting £10 million initiative is being set up by the NYMR themselves, and will be funded by the National Lottery Heritage Trust, Department for

Dangers of DIY Wills Clare Presley - Private Client Specialist
The road to a valid Will can be full of potholes and the implications and costs of getting it wrong can be disastrous, at a fraught and emotional time. Here are some of the things that can go wrong:
forward will even be used in Goathland Station’s upcoming interactive exhibition ‘In Fog and Falling Snow’, expected in 2021. If you don’t know anyone but fancy volunteering anyway, the team are also looking for helpers who can transcribe the recordings. We heard from Jennifer Halmshaw; Trust Board Member, Chair of Education and Education Champion for the Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey project. She says: “We’re looking for participants who worked on this remote rural railway – or whose family did – to take part in recorded interviews, so we can share their memories and showcase life on the railway more than 50 years ago! We’ll be holding interviews at Pickering Station, or, for those unable to get to
us, we’re more than happy to arrange home visits.”
OVER TO YOU So, while you’re used to our Time Travel articles being us telling you about history, this month is a little different. We’re asking you to tell us about history – and to help the NYMR create an archive of memories that will educate and inspire others for years to come. If you want to share your story from working on the Whitby-Pickering railway pre-1965, or you know someone who does, then contact the Oral History Project on 01751 473799 and then go through the extension 248; or, alternatively, email learning@nymr. co.uk.
•Correct execution There are strict legal formalities to follow in order for a Will to be valid. I have even seen Wills that have not been signed! •Unintended tax consequences I always say ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’, and that would relate well to a lot of people’s knowledge of tax. Badly drafted Wills can result in double taxation or loss of available reliefs. •Care home fees There is a simple way of safe-guarding a half share in a house for your children without falling foul of deprivation of asset rules. Without these provisions in place a jointly owned house could pass automatically to the surviving joint owner, and there is nothing that can then be done to safe-guard at this stage. •Second marriages and more complex family arrangements Some people wrongly believe that when a couple make Wills at the same time that the survivor has to follow what is in the Will, which is not true. The survivor could disinherit family by remarriage or changing their Will. •Failed gifts due to changes in assets Some (mainly homemade) Wills make gifts of specific assets that could leave unintended consequences. E.g. making a gift of a house to somebody and then not owning one when they die. •Unmarried partners There is no such thing in law as common-law spouse. It is extremely important to take advice when you have an unmarried partner. •Beneficiaries dying before you Many homemade Wills do not consider what might happen if the intended beneficiary died before them. If people died in an order that wasn’t expected then you could end up with an intestacy and unintended family members benefitting. The language used in Wills is crucially important and this is often not appreciated by the DIY testator. My experience and knowledge means I will listen to your priorities and circumstances and advise on the best options for you, giving you peace of mind. WANDERER WALKING WITH THE
OUT AND ABOUT FROM POCKLINGTON
This walk starts from Pocklington. Climbing a ridge of the Wolds north east of the town it wends its way to Millington where there are refreshment opportunities. The route then ascends to pick up the Wolds Way long distance path from which there are fine views to Millington and the vale beyond. The return to Pocklington is either mainly along a quiet road or through the attractive grounds of the Madhyamaka Buddhist Centre. This is a relatively easy route apart from a steep climb from Millington to the Wolds Way. Navigation should be straightforward as all the route is well waymarked. Some paths, especially on the outward stretch near the golf course and again through the fields approaching Millington, can be muddy.
Directions
1 From the bus station go right at the mini roundabout into Railway Street. Go over the zebra crossing at the end into Market Place (church to the left). Continue down Market Place passing the Co-op to the left but just beyond The Feathers go right down Union Street. Where Union Street meets a road coming in from the left continue ahead (grassy area and beck on the left at first). About 125 metres along the road look out for Target Lane on the left highlighted by a footpath trail sign opposite.
2 Turn left following the clear path initially with a grassy area to the left. Cross a road and continue uphill on a stony path eventually reaching a transmitter mast. Keep ahead here going to the left of the wire-fenced area with views down to the left. Follow the path into the wood going left at a fork to arrive at the edge of a golf course on the right. For the next 400 metres the route roughly follows the edge of the golf course on a path dipping in and out of the trees. When a car-wide track is met turn left down it as indicated by the footpath sign. Keep on the track as it twists downhill passing an intensive unit on the right to reach a road.
3 Turn right on the road watching out for fast moving traffic. After about 500 metres, where the road bends
22
slightly right, go over a stile on the right to follow a signed footpath diagonally across pasture to a bridge over a beck. Follow the fenced path on the other side, then go through a gate with a fence to the right to continue to another gate leading to a driveway. Go right down the drive but in 75 metres look out for a footpath sign on the left pointing up a muddy bank.
4 At the top of the bank follow the field edge to the right then go left in the corner to keep the trees to the right. The route now continues along the edge of this and the next field, keeping the open ground to the left and trees/shrubs to the right. Eventually the trees/ shrubs end by a metal gate where you go ahead on an obvious car-wide track. Where the track joins a tarmac road go right. Follow the road towards Millington turning right at a junction by the village sign (to visit the church keep ahead). 5 Just after the street goes left and starts to go uphill go right taking a signed footpath heading downhill on a track. Go through a gate and with a house to the left take the path ahead (indicated by a very large ornamental arrow!) going down a fenced boardwalk into the valley bottom. Cross the beck and continue, at first on the boardwalk but soon climbing steeply up the shoulder of the hill, aiming to the right of a prominent gate/fence ahead. At the fence do not cross but go
Getting there
Distance:

Miles
Time:
3 1/2 Hours
Start from Pocklington bus station. Pocklington is 15 miles from York accessed via the A1079 Hull Road. There’s ample parking in the town although the central streets have parking limited to two hours. Some limited roadside parking may be available on Kilnwick Road near the point the walk leaves and re-enters the town. Pocklington is accessible by frequent bus taking 45-50 minutes: bus 45/46 runs from York Station Road to Pocklington every hour while bus X46/X47 runs hourly from the Railway Station.
Refreshments En route there’s the Gait Inn and delightful Ramblers’ Rest tea room (closed Tuesday and Wednesday) both in Millington main street. Another option nearer the finish is the World Peace Café in the grounds of the Madhyamaka Buddhist Centre.
What to see Pocklington has a range of independent shops in the Market Place and surrounding streets. All Saints Church, known locally as the Cathedral of the Wolds, is a grade one listed building dating from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. Millington is a quiet farming village. It also has a grade one listed church, St Margaret’s, notable features of which include a twelfth century nave and Norman doorway. The Madhyamaka Buddhist Centre occupies the buildings and grounds of Kilnwick Percy Hall. Much of the house has been demolished but the grand entrance remains. slightly right uphill keeping it to the left. The route now continues with a fence on the left climbing uphill. After a kissing gate the fence ends at a redundant stile where you go straight on aiming toward the prominent signpost ahead marking a footpath junction.
6 At the footpath junction turn right onto the Wolds Way. Follow the obvious path with a hedge/fence and views down to Millington on the right. After about 600 metres at the end of the field follow the Wolds Way sharp left for 100 metres before turning right, as indicated by a prominent sign, across a large open field. At the corner of the wood turn right alongside it, still following the Wolds Way. Keep the woodland to the left and
of which a stile gives access to the main drive bordered by metal fencing. Follow the drive away from the hall to the road. At the road turn right and in about 125 metres come to a prominent footpath sign on the left.
7 After about 400 metres at the top of
across the golf course. The path isn’t visible underfoot but is well marked by signs. If in doubt keep straight aiming for the right-hand edge of trees visible ahead. On reaching the trees keep them to the left soon following an attractive path with a line of trees to its right and wide views to the left. Where the path meets a junction continue ahead (left) going downhill on steps between gardens. On reaching a road cross it and continue down to reach another road. Here turn right but in 50 metres go left down another road. Follow this to the left to take an alleyway on the right (between nos. 14 & 15). At the next road turn left to arrive at the main (Kilnwick) road. Follow this right passing Target Lane to retrace your steps to the bus station via the Market Place.
8 Both routes now merge and head
a drive to the left marked by a prominent parish noticeboard there’s a choice of routes. Option one, for the quickest return to Pocklington is to continue ahead on the road for a further 500 metres following it as it takes a series of gradual bends to the left, until a footpath sign is encountered on the right pointing the way across the golf course (continue at Point 8 below). For a more interesting option through the grounds of the Madhyamaka Buddhist Centre (see directions 7a below).
7a To visit the Buddhist Centre go down the drive marked by the noticeboard. Pass Madhyamaka signs continuing ahead with the walled garden off to the left. Soon a white building appears and you come to a courtyard area at the far left corner corner, where you’ll find the World Peace Café. Exit the courtyard to the right keeping the buildings of the main hall to the left to arrive in front of the hall’s impressive entrance. Here, go across the grass away from the hall to a metal gate beyond which steps give access to the parkland. It’s possible to walk across the park to the lake but an easier route is to veer right to pass besides a wooded area at the edge

YORK LIFE
Local Over the past month, every time I’ve sat down to write this column, York City’s chances of automatic promotion have fluctuated – so who knows what state the National League North table will be looking like by the time you’re reading this. All I know is that, due to the bad weather, Kings Lynn have to play 15 games in about four days. So maybe York can take advantage of the inevitable dropped points from our friends in Norfolk and finally make it to, well – not the promised land, but the highest division in non-League football. I recently saw the National League described as a list of places you don’t want to have to go for meetings: Hartlepool, Aldershot, and Barrow to name but three. I would take that, given my frustration at seeing a club I grew up watching in the equivalent of League One face the likes of Blyth Spartans and Curzon Ashton for the past three seasons. Recently I went to Kidderminster to watch the Minstermen grind out a 1-0 victory where their fans took defeat in good grace saying: “How are you top of the League? You’re only good at kicking it really high in the air”. To be fair, when

SPECIALSPE OF it’s in the air it’s not near our goal; and when you’re 1-0 up that’s a good thing. Aside from Dan Maguire’s opportunist strike, my favourite part of the game was a York fan winding up our former striker Ashley Chambers – telling him to “get a haircut”, with Chambers sporting a zero trim. It was the funniest thing I’d heard in the month. But then I read a Tweet online from someone who, when they get bored, likes to ring up Best Western
BOXING Onto boxing now and Deontay Wilder’s fight with Tyson Fury saw Fury win a convincing rematch, knocking out the American who was perplexed throughout the contest. Good to see Wilder take defeat in grace as good as the Kidderminster Harriers’ supporters saying that he lost because his costume was too heavy and it affected his legs. That’s up there with David Haye’s big toe as the worst ever excuses, particularly in a sport as tough as boxing. Hopefully we’ll see a Battle of Britain with Anthony Joshua later in the year. Joshua, who didn’t look right in his first fight with Andy Ruiz Jr, commented straight after his defeat saying: “This is Andy’s night, the better man won”. Perhaps Wilder should take a leaf out of that book if he does insist on a third fight with Fury, which I can only see going the same way.

Hotels so that when they say ‘Hello, Best Western’ he can respond with ‘Magnificent Seven’ and then hang up. That win was well received, but little over two weeks later some York City players were started on in the car park after a 4-1 home loss to Hereford. While it was a bad defeat, some perspective is needed. Not just because the team remained top of the table, which after the past two campaigns is a needed

MOTORING NEWS WOMAN DRIVERS While there may have previously been negative connotations around the term ‘women drivers’, Autocar are celebrating ladies of the automotive industry with their Great Women in the British Car Industry initiative. The event, held in central London on 4th June 2020, will unveil the top 100 women in the industry; from categories including Aftersales and Workshop, Marketing, Sales, People Development, Manufacturing and more. Last year’s winner was Emma King, senior in Purchasing, who has been leading the way for Ford and their $11bn investment in electric vehicles.
Rachael Prasher, Managing Director at Haymarket Automotive, heads up the judging panel. She says: “We’re all so proud to be entering the fifth year of our initiative to shine a light on the best and brightest women in the UK’s automotive industry. “Over the past five years, I’ve been delighted to see a huge increase in the number of opportunities, which has in turn allowed women to excel further across all key industry sectors. This year we’re excited to once again recognise the female leaders who are making waves in the industry, and we look forward to getting to know the wealth of talent from this year’s nominations.” To find out more about the event, visit www.autocar.co.uk.

GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOMTOM Testing the TomTom Go Premium. Our tech columnist, Claire Pulpher, recently bought a new car. And what does every keen 21st century motorist have to have on their dashboard? That’s right – a satnav. It’s all well and good using Google Maps on your phone, but when it comes to a navigation system that will get you from A to B in the safest, easiest and most effective form, a purpose-built satnav is the way to go. The TomTom Go Premium is TomTom’s most advanced satnav to date, with features including (but definitely not limited to): • Wi-Fi® updates for both world maps and software.
• Last Mile Navigation and Find My Car – so you can continue your navigation on foot through your smartphone when a car won’t get you there. • Trip Planning with TomTom MyDrive and Road Trips. Here’s what Claire had to say about it: “Anyone who knows me will be well aware that my sense of direction is absolutely abysmal – I need all the help I can get! I’ve struggled using mobile devices in the past as they’re not always reliable, but straight away I felt like I could put my faith in the TomTom. “The five-inch screen meant that I could pick up on where I was headed with just a quick glance, and it was so easy to use. I often visit places I’ve never been before, so the MyDrive planner was so useful. I dread to think about the kind of traffic I could have been stuck in had I not had the Go Premium to help me!” Features exclusive to the Go Premium include live TomTom Services via a built-in SIM; Trip Statistics, which tells you all about your driving patterns; and personalised routes. •£299.99 from www.tomtom.com

SAFE AS HOUSES New Solicitor joins Ware Kay Residential Property Team, Ware & Kay Solicitors has welcomed Catherine Edge to its growing Residential Property Team in York. Catherine specialises in all aspects of residential property and expertly assists clients who wish to buy and sell both freehold and leasehold property. She also has extensive experience of buying and selling at auction, purchasing buy-to-lets, landlord and tenant work, transfers of equity, mortgage transactions and property registrations. Originally from near Beverley in East Yorkshire, Catherine arrives at Ware & Kay with over 10 years’ experience. She completed the legal practice course at the York College of Law in 2005 before qualifying as a Solicitor in 2009. Catherine is highly experienced and extremely well-regarded. Ware & Kay’s Director David Hyams says: “We are delighted to welcome
Catherine to the team as we continue to expand. Her extensive experience combined with her local knowledge will ensure she fits in well with our focus on developing strong interpersonal relationships with our clients and contacts”. The firm has a strong client base, which is growing all the time and I look forward to being a key part of the team.”
By David Binelli, owner of Alterations Express, Fossgate and Sew n’ Sew’s, Newgate Market Small businesses are the life, blood and backbone of York and its city centre so if we, the public, and other organisations don’t use our local small, independent businesses - whether it’s a café, a ghost tour, a pie shop, or in my case: clothes and curtain alterations then these hugely important enterprises will disappear. Many, if not most of the small ventures in York’s city centre, make very little profit and rely on passing trade from a bustling mix of people from all walks of life. Repeat business from regular customers visiting the city or town centre is also vital. With the recent storms, wet and windy weather and now the coronavirus, our local shopkeepers are almost on their knees, pulling their hair out and won-
dering what catastrophe is to hit next. A meteor landing on the Minster, or maybe a plague of locusts flying down Coney Street? I wouldn’t rule anything out just yet. So you see, it’s so important that local people and organisations continue to use their local shops - otherwise they will simply cease to be. And believe me, it won’t take long for them to close. Imagine the Shambles, High and Low Petergate, Fossgate and many more wonderful streets in York, with most, if not all, of their doors and windows boarded up with no-one wanting to take on a new lease. Doesn’t bear thinking about does it? So… Use Us Or Lose Us…Forever. Are you a small business? If you’re interested in being part of David’s new movement, Use Us Or Lose Us, drop him an email: david@binelli.co.uk.

We’re sending huge congratulations to the brilliant team at PenLife Associates for raising a phenomenal £10,450 for local charity, Dementia Forward. All 29 employees at the York-based PenLife Associates, Independent Chartered Financial Planners, did their fair share to hit the impressive £5,000 target for their 2019 chosen charity – to then be matched with another £5,000 from Directors Julie Wilson and Andrew Richardson. To raise the funds, colleagues held bake sales, charity poker games, lunch clubs, and more – with some even surviving the physically taxing Tough Mudder challenge. Julie says: “One of Dementia Forward’s aims is to ‘knit’ dementia support into the everyday lives of the local community, so that people can continue to live well in their own communities. We’re thrilled that our donation will help the charity to do this, and make life more enjoyable for those affected – and their carers.” Andrew adds: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients, who have very kindly donated to
this fantastic charity. We really couldn’t have done it without their help.” Fiona Andrews from Dementia Forward says: “PenLife have been absolutely fantastic. From day one they’ve put their hearts and souls into fundraising, and we cannot thank them enough for the huge amount they’ve raised. We would love all local firms to follow PenLife’s lead and support a local charity – the funds raised make such a difference.” Great job, PenLife!

ASK THE EXPERT...
Top Rated Once Again! The Times 2020 Guide to the UK’s Top Rated Financial Advisers (in conjunction with VouchedFor) has been published, and we’re more than proud to announce that four of our advisers made the cut!
Julie Wilson, straight-talking Yorkshire financial planner
Asif Sadullah, Ricardo Da Silva and John Walker also made the list in 2019, but this year they are also joined by Deborah Jacobs! Financial planning is the best job in the world. Most consumers – and sadly far too many advisers – don’t know what real financial planning is. There’s a world of difference between the old floggers of pensions and ISAs, and professional financial planning that takes care of clients and helps them live their best lives. The best fund is not going to change your life. But proper financial planning most definitely will. Here at PenLife we are way more interested in our clients’ lives than we are their money. Proper financial planning doesn’t depend on the sale of a financial product. These are merely tools to help get the job done. We could never advise clients on their money under we have a deep and rich understanding of their needs, their goals, their hopes and fears and their dreams. There are three distinct parts to a professional financial planner’s job: 1. Life Planning We are genuinely interested in our clients and their story. We need to know them really well to do our job properly. We need to know where they are now in their life, and how they got there. What sort of life they have now and what sort of life they want to have in the future. 2. Financial Planning We have to tell people the truth about money. We need to be honest about what needs to happen for them to get and keep the life they say they want. 3. Financial Advice This is the third and least important part of our job. It involves finding the right product or investment, if one is necessary, to get the job done.
link We’re not just a magazine! WE’RE A MEDIA MACHINE
Your money is there to serve your life, not the other way around. And done properly, financial planning is the most rewarding job in the world. A job that allows clients to get and keep the ideal life they want. And that’s why our advisers skip to work in the morning and dance home again at night.

LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD
The world has either gone, or is going, mad. Words failed me when news hit that the most proactive response we appear to have as a nation when faced with a possible viral epidemic was to head down the shops and buy a load of bog paper. I suppose this activity may be covered by the broader brush of the British ‘stiff upper lip’ but, as life-saving or life-prolonging measures go, I feel we’ve probably fallen a little short of anything even remotely likely to be successful. “Well, what would you suggest?” I hear you ask. After all, as I often tell our team, it’s very easy to point out problems – but it’s solutions we want. Unfortunately, mutating airborne viruses are not my strong suit. But, as I understand it, COVID-19 isn’t particularly dangerous to most people. That being said, it appears to be very contagious – particularly if you’re prone to slobbering all over each other in public. As you can probably tell by now, I’m trying to make light of the potentially serious events unfolding around the world. Currently business goes on as usual for us, but I hope everyone reading this is, and continues to be, in good health.
Nestled in a low carbon community, this gorgeous family home has style and substance. There are five double bedrooms, a garage plus off-street parking for three cars, and a generous rear garden, too.
As always, if you can’t leave the house for whatever reason, you can shop with us by phone, email, online chat or on our website at www. htodd.co.uk. We love the spacious living accommodation and open plan dining kitchen. Dinner parties, family meals and baking Saturdays will be a doddle with three built-in ovens, a warming drawer and dishwasher all included in the kitchen of dreams.
Actually, you know what it might be better to buy during a breaking epidemic than toilet paper? Kitchen appliances! At least then, when it’s all over, you will have something good to show for it.

bedroom, which boasts a further ensuite and large storage cupboards. In a final bid to make this the ultimate dream home, there is also a large dressing room on the top floor (or home office, or play area, or second snug, or massive storage space). PEAT-FREE GARDENING You may be aware of the everincreasing topic on using peat-free compost. For decades, peat-based composts have been used as growing media for plants, but due to the concern of how harvesting peat can damage the environment, gardeners are now on the search for peat-free alternatives.
What is peat? Peat is a natural product made of partially decayed organic matter, mainly from plant material that accumulates in wetland habitats. Peat forms at about 1mm per year, which means the peat that’s being harvested now has taken thousands of years to accumulate! Peat bogs in the UK are being depleted faster than they can replenish. They are home to a number of plants, wildlife and insects and peat bogs also produce and store carbon. Once a peat bog is harvested, the carbon is released into the air, which contributes to global warming. What can be done to change this? To protect the ever-increasing depletion
of peat bogs, the first step – as with anything – is to raise awareness. Previously, peat-free composts were overlooked by gardeners as an inferior product. But over the past few years, as awareness has increased, there are now a number of peat-free products available on the market. That, combined with the Government’s pledge to be completely peat-free by 2030, means there is no better time than for gardeners to start using peatfree alternatives. Peat-free composts are made from a variety of different waste products such as wood, coir, wool and, of course, composted materials.
‘environmentally friendly’, but it may still include peat. •Check the packaging to see if the product is recommended for certain plant groups, such as seed growing or ericaceous plants. •Follow the advice on the packaging as some peat-free products have specific watering and feed advice to that of peat-based composts. Here at Dean’s Garden Centre, we stock a good range of peat-free alternatives for your gardening needs.
What to look out for when buying peatfree products •Ensure the packaging states ‘peat-free’. Some packaging may use wording such as ‘organic’ or

S T O O R RED Red fruit and vegetables are all the rage, partly because red colouring is linked to the disease protecting antioxidants lycopene and anthocyanins. When it comes to vegetables, few are redder than most types of beetroot. Given their health benefits it’s a surprise beetroot aren’t in the repertoire of more vegetable gardeners. Of course, not everyone is a fan of a vegetable that’s sometimes regarded as only fit to be pickled. It’s also true that beetroot can rapidly go from delectable to diabolical if left too long in the ground. Perhaps some of those who don’t grow it have been permanently scarred by eating tough and ‘earthy’ flavoured beetroot that had grown to the size of footballs. The secret of tasty and well-textured beetroot is to avoid plants becoming over large and woody. This
means treating them as a ‘successional’ crop, where several sowings are made to produce a succession of modest-sized roots. I usually sow the first beetroot outside no earlier than mid-April. It’s important not to start too soon. Beetroot are one of those crops susceptible to ‘bolting’ (producing a seed head rather than an edible-sized root) if exposed to a bout of cold weather. Fortunately, some varieties have been developed that are boltresistant. Being a cautious gardener I always use one of these, usually the well-known Boltardy, for all sowings before the middle of May. Beetroot sown in mid-April should have sweet golf ball-sized roots for harvest by the end of June. If roots are pulled selectively some can be left to grow larger. Do not to allow any to exceed tennis ball-size however! This is where disappointment can set in unless the roots are intended for processing. With most varieties, flavour and texture diminish with size. This is especially noticeable when beetroot is eaten uncooked in salad. Even cooked, most types are better as ‘baby’ beet. To avoid a glut of over-sized beetroot I make several further sowings through
EXPERT
late spring and early summer. The last sowing is usually just after midsummer’s day. These roots will be edible from mid-September and can be used through the autumn. Some gardeners like to lift and store beetroot for the winter but I prefer to leave them in the ground. It’s usually possible to continue to pull quality fresh beetroot until December. One reason to harvest beetroot before winter sets in is nibbling by rodents. Other occasional problems to watch for are birds pecking seedlings and blackfly distorting young leaves. More important is avoiding a forest of crowded seedlings stunted by competition. It’s often not realised most varieties of beetroot are ‘multigerm’, that is each seed has the potential to produce several seedlings. As a result, unless you sow very sparingly, it’s almost always necessary to ‘thin out’ so that
Tony Chalcraft seedlings are spaced at least several centimetres apart. I should also add that, although for me beetroot are the ‘red roots’, not all varieties are this colour. Pink, yellow and orange types are available. There are also some oddities. A few varieties, for example Barbietola di Choggia, have concentric red and white circles in the flesh. Others have cylindrical, rather than round roots, resembling a fat red carrot. For me though, such varieties are occasional novelties. I find the standard round red roots to be the easiest to grow and, provided they’re harvested young, the tastiest for eating.

Got a gardening question?
Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
BROWN NURSERIES
If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Q. I have some hydrangeas in my garden. Could you please advise me how and when to prune these please? A. There are two main types of hydrangea: macrophylla and paniculate. The macrophylla varieties are bushy shrubs with many cultivars bearing summer flowers. Some have domed heads of mainly sterile flowers: “hortensias or mop head” hydrangeas. Others have flatheads with large sterile flowers on the outside and smaller fertile flowers at the centre: “lacecaps.” Flowers are born on the previous season's wood, often satisfactorily with little attention, however regular pruning nearly always enhances flowering. Leave the old flower heads on over winter to protect new shoots beneath, and then prune in mid-spring. On established plants cut back weak, thin shoots and one or two of the oldest
stems to the base of the plant. Prune the previous year’s flowering branches by up to 12”/30cm to a pair of fat buds. These will produce flowering shoots. Hydrangea paniculate is an upright shrub with large panicles of flowers in late summer on the current season’s growth. Prune in early spring before the plants start to actively grow. Pruning is not essential, however, plants flower much better if pruned back annually to a woody framework, to as low as 18”/45cm. In spring of subsequent years cut all growth back to the lowest pair of buds above the framework. Neglected plants usually respond well if cut back hard to recreate a low framework.
Q. Can you advise re-laying a new lawn and how to grow one successfully? A. New lawns can be created by sowing seed or by laying turf. There are pros and cons to each method, but there is no doubt that seeding a lawn is a lot cheaper! To make this possible, the secret is proper preparation of the ground. Time spent on initial prep will pay off later. There is no point trying to put to lawn, land which is unsuitable for grass. For instance, grass will never grow in deep shade. There is lawn seed intended for partial shade and this will work very well in these areas. Start by clearing the ground of all existing vegetation,
Chris Brown
and once this has been done, dig down to a spades depth, and leave to dry for a couple of days. This will allow the soil to crumble when you start to rake the soil level, removing any stones also. Now that the soil has been dug and broken down, it needs to be consolidated to give a level surface, raking any loose soil into any depressions that have appeared. Repeat the process in the opposite direction. You can sow the seed. A rough guide for sowing seed is 30-40 grams per square metre, 1-1.5 ounces per square yard. Once sown, rake lightly in, and the seed will start to germinate after about 14 days. Here’s hoping you have a nice lawn to mow this summer! X

NO MORE ROLLING BALLS. Do you find your ball of wool rolls around everywhere? Fear not – pop it into a plastic bag and loosely fasten the top. Problem solved. START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON. If you’re about to start a new ball of wool then stop the problem of rolling balls from ever happening at all – by pulling the wool from the middle. You’ll get a whole lot, but you’ll knit through it quickly; and your ball won’t be going anywhere. PLAN AHEAD. Worrying that you might not have enough wool to do an extra row? Plan ahead by working out how much wool you need for two rows, fold that in half and tie a knot in it. If you reach that knot before you finish your first row then you know you won’t have enough for a second. Smart. DO YOUR BIT. While the process of knitting is a relaxing and enjoyable pastime for you, the end results can often benefit others. Whether you decide to set up a stall or small business to sell your products, you can also help many charities – from knitting baby clothes for the Special Care Baby Unit at York Hospital to taking part in The Big Knit for Help the Aged, knitting ‘hats’ for Innocent smoothies.

HAVE A HOME? THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE. BARNEY This handsome young man joined the centre when his previous owner didn’t have enough time for him anymore. He loves people and other dogs, and enjoys going on long and interesting walks – so a new home with an active lifestyle would be ideal. He doesn’t like to be left alone, so his new owners will need to be around most of the time. SCRUFF Just look at this cute little guy! His needs weren’t being met in his previous home, so he came to the centre. Due to legal reasons he’s been there for a while, waiting for his life to begin – and the staff have absolutely loved having him. Despite needing a muzzle on walks due to the fact he’s not too good with other animals, Scruff is lovely boy who deserves a wonderful new home.
Visit www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk or call 654949 MIVVI & CHUPPA-CHUP These two beautiful sisters haven’t had it easy – and they absolutely deserve a new life and a new family! They previously lived in awful conditions and suffered serious neglect – arriving at the centre with cat flu, crawling with fleas, and looking very sorry for themselves. Chuppa-Chup is feeling better now – but the poor lady had very sore and inflamed eyes when she was brought in. She’s a confident lady and enjoys seeing people! Her lovely sister Mivvi is a little more reserved, but once her confidence picks up she enjoys being fussed over too. And while she has a cleft lip, it doesn’t cause her any problems – she certainly eats well! If you’d like to discuss adopting them, get in touch on 01904 760356 or visit www.york.cats.org.uk.

Achilles Tendon Problems Resident sport and exercise expert, Dr Dane Vishnubala, goes over the available treatments for Achilles tendon problems. Many people, both active and inactive get Achilles problems. We see a range of these problems in the clinic. This article looks at potential treatment options.
What Achilles problems do we commonly see?
The Achilles is a tendon, tendons join muscles to bones. The Achilles tendon joins the calf muscle to the heel bone. This strong tendon can take lots of force going through it. However, sometimes due to trauma or inactivity, this tendon becomes weaker. This can cause it to be swollen or painful and is known as a tendinopathy. Sometimes the tendon may have small tears, rarely it can tear completely. In the clinic, we see a lot of tendinopathies, they can be very disabling for many of our patients. Pain is a strong indicator of Achilles problems, whether walking or running. However patients will benefit from more movement or exercise.
Treatments
There are many ways to treat Achilles tendinopathy. Treatment can only start following a correct diagnosis, which can be confirmed with an ultrasound scan. One of our specialist doctors or
physios will talk about your injury and examine you. We can then provide a range of treatment options to help tackle the problem.
Managing Activity
Our team will review your current activity affecting the Achilles. The clinic software enables patients to log their present activities and we can co-ordinate to ensure your optimum treatment.
Loading Exercises
Our physio team will show you key exercises to strengthen your Achilles. Our state-of-the-art rehab space provides a great setting to go through these exercises with you.
Injections
Injections can be useful in many joint problems. If the ultrasound shows inflammation and fluid surrounding the achilles, then various types of injections could prove very effective alongside exercise. We always weigh up the risks
Reviewing Biomechanics
Our team can examine your lower leg, your running style and how you move, using hi-tech video analysis. We then can suggest activity changes, consider orthotics or other stress reducing treatments.
Shockwave
We are one of the very few clinics in York with a Shockwave machine. Research shows that Shockwave,

Eat Well to Relieve Exam Stress
For thousands of children and teenagers the Easter holidays are the last break before exam season starts. This can be a stressful time for many youngsters. To help manage exam nerves and stress encourage your kids to eat foods rich in nutrients that support energy levels, memory, concentration, and nerves. Magnesium is known as our ‘anti stress’ mineral as it plays an important part in energy production and relaxation. Eat green vegetables. A handful of nuts and raisins makes a great snack when revising for exams.
- Yo r k ’s I n d e p e n d e n t P r i v a t e G P C l i n i c -
The B-vitamins work closely with magnesium in the body, and are vital for dealing with stress and supporting memory and concentration. Unfortunately, the refined foods that most teens love like white bread, pasta and rice are low in B-vitamins, so swap to the wholegrain versions whenever possible. Other good sources include sweet potatoes, mushrooms, green leafy vegetables, avocado, eggs, dairy products, poultry, fish, nuts. Need to seeand a Doctor?

Events Hotlist TO YOUR ART’S CONTENT Don’t miss Harland Miller’s largest exhibition to date.
Harland Miller: York, So Good They Named It Once is a combination of both Miller’s best-known works and brand new paintings that have been created especially for this exhibition. From his renowned Penguin Book Covers, inspired by dust jackets of volumes from the ‘50s and ‘60s, to the Pelican Bad Weather Paintings, which focus on the whole of Yorkshire’s culture and geography; you’ll discover over 30 different works across three galleries. Miller himself grew up in Yorkshire in the 1970s, and cites this as the key to his artistic development. The exhibition is currently on, and will run until the 31st May. For more information, please visit www. yorkartgallery.org.uk.

EASTER AT THE MINSTER Celebrate Easter in our beautiful Minster.
Easter is fast approaching, and where better to spend it than York Minster? There are always lots of wonderful events taking place there, but you won’t want to miss these seasonal specials: Silence in the Minster, Thursdays in March, 7pm. Experience the calming healing power of silent meditation and silence for what could quite possibly be the first ever time in the surroundings of the Minster. Whether you choose to sit in the silence and absorb the stillness of the building, or walk around quietly, you’re sure to find peace at York Minster. Good Friday, 10th April, 10am-6pm. Don’t miss this glorious day as York Minster is brought to life with seasonal worship and music. Good Friday is traditionally a day of fasting and penitence as Christians remember the day Jesus died on the cross – and therefore all are welcome to join in acts of worship, to pray alone, or to simply wander around. Services will be led through the day. Easter Sunday, 12th April, 8am-5pm. Easter Day is a hugely important date in the Christian calendar, as it celebrates Jesus rising from the dead. Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, will lead a Solemn Eucharist of Easter Day, with music sung by the York Minster Choir. For more information on events at York Minster, visit www.yorkminster.org.
Let’s face it – we all enjoy a spot of clothes shopping. Unfortunately, most of us can’t afford to go out and buy an entire new wardrobe when we feel like it – and even if we could, we’d then have a job on getting rid of all our old stuff. Well, what if we told you that you could get a whole new wardrobe AND get rid of your old stuff that you no longer want AND be donating to charity all at the same time? Can’t be done? It flippin’ can. And it will – courtesy of the Clothes Swap happening at Spark in York on Sunday 5th April, 12-4pm. A ticket will set you back £5, and all you have to do is drop your clothes off at one of two locations (min. three items, max. 10) in exchange for tokens, which you can then use to choose brand new items on the day. And if you fancy more items than you have

It’s Vienna Festival Ballet’s 40th anniversary this year, and they’re celebrating by bringing their show, Sleeping Beauty, to the Grand Opera House on Saturday 2nd May. through incredible choreography, lavish costumes and gloriously handcrafted scenery – to tell the story we all know and love. Poor Princess Aurora is left cursed when wicked fairy Carabosse casts a spell that she will prick her finger and die at the age of 16. The Lilac Fairy changes it so that she instead sleeps for 100 years unless she’s woken by the kiss of a handsome prince – but will that day ever come? You’ll have to book your tickets to find out – visit www.atgtickets.com/york or call 0844 781 3024 for more information.

NEEDLE AND THREAD From jewellery to embroidery.
Fancy having a go at making your own necklace? What about embroidering? The Viking Loom on Wigginton Road are holding a Workshop Day on Saturday 9th May, offering two exciting sessions for you to try for yourself. First of all, Romy Cordingley will be presenting her Jewellery Making class. These workshops will teach you how to put on a clasp and make your beads secure – so you can then choose your own beads and make a bracelet or necklace. Additionally to this will be a Freehand Machine Embroidery workshop with Fran Brammer. You’ll learn how to draw, infill, and create texture and embellish on calico; as well as discovering how to create applique pieces with embroidery. There will be some machines to use, but it’s even better if you can bring your own. The workshops will run from 10.30am until 4pm, and cost £5. For more information, visit www.vikingloom.co.uk.
FEEL GOOD
At the York Health, Healing and Wellbeing Festival. This fantastic festival is sure to get you feeling good – and will be arriving at York Racecourse on the 18th and 19th April. The Rock Choir will be on hand to entertain you on the Sunday, and guest speaker, leading Spiritual Facilitator and Healer Daisy Foss, will be taking healing sessions throughout the weekend. Daisy will also give a talk on each day. Entrance is just £5 with a concessions option at £4, and accompanied children under 15 get in for free. The York Health, Healing and Wellbeing Festival is the largest of six shows around the country, and is sure to be a great day out. - RECIPE -
This lemon and thyme cake, put together by local baker, Nicola O’Keeffe from O’crumbs, is easy to follow and delivers delicious results - just be sure to make the lemon curd the day before.
A jazzy new gastro pub has opened in the heart of York. The Old House is located down Low Petergate in one of the oldest, original buildings around. Just a two-minute walk from the historic York Shambles and the incredible York Minster. Chef Chris Harrison has years of experience in the industry, working in award-winning and Michelin starred restaurants across the country: “The Old House York came about after
the success of The Old House Hull. After gaining national press and multiple awards we felt confident in taking our accessible restaurant concept to another major city. The building on Low Petergate is everything we look for in a building and perfectly harmonises with our Old House brand. We offer a casual and relaxed restaurant experience without compromise on quality. Seasonal and local produce is used across the menu with our own unique and innovative twists. This is the whole ethos of our Shoot The Bull group.”
- RECIPE -
Beignets INGREDIENTS 2 x 1/4 teaspoon dried yeast 340ml water 90g caster sugar 1tsp salt 2 eggs 240ml evaporated milk 50g melted butter 905g plain flour To serve Toffee Sauce Vanilla ice cream
Recipe courtesy of The Old House, York.
Method 1. In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients and mix well until a smooth dough is achieved. 2. Cover and rest in a fridge for at least two hours! Leaving room for the dough to rise. 3. Roll chunks of the dough on a floured surface to 4/5mm thick, roughly cut into 2-inch squares.

Lemon & thyme cake
4. Deep fry at 180c, keep turning and moving the beignets as they puff up into little pillows, fry until golden brown all over, drain and cool for 1 minute, dust with a good coating of icing sugar(add a touch of cinnamon powder to the icing sugar for a delicious finish). 5. Serve with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients for cake 225g softened unsalted butter 225g golden caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 4 eggs 2 teaspoons baking powder Zest and juice of one lemon 1 tablespoon milk ½ tablespoon chopped thyme leaves
Ingredients for filling Lemon curd 2 unwaxed lemons 100g golden caster sugar 50g unsalted butter 2 eggs plus 1egg yolk Buttercream 150g softened unsalted butter 200g icing sugar 3 tablespoons lemon juice
METHOD Make the lemon curd the day before 1. Place a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water, making sure the water is not touching the bottom of the bowl. Zest the lemon, squeeze the juice and add to the butter and sugar in the heatproof bowl 2. Stir the mixture every now and then until the butter has melted 3. In a separate bowl lightly whisk the eggs and egg yolk and stir them into the lemon mixture 4. Whisk all the ingredients until combined then leave to cook for 10 to 13 minutes, stirring every now and again. The mixture should become creamy and thick enough to coat the back of the spoon 5. Remove the bowl from the heat and leave to cool, stirring occasionally. 6. Once cooled spoon into a sterilised jar ( this quantity should make one 250g jar) and keep in the fridge N.B to sterilise the jar, wash in hot soppy water or put through hot cycle in dishwasher. Then place onto a baking tray and warm through in an oven for 10 -15 mins at temp. 160c/140c fan/gas 3
For the cake 1. Prepare the tin first. Line the bottom of the tins with baking paper and grease the sides 2. Preheat the oven to 180C/160 Fan/gas mark 4 Cream the butter until soft and then add the sugar and continue to cream together until pale in colour. 3. Zest the lemon and add to the mixture with the thyme leaves 4. Lightly beat the eggs in a jug and to prevent the eggs curdling add a tablespoon of flour into the creamed butter and sugar and then add the beaten eggs gradually, a teaspoon at a time. 5. Once the eggs have been incorporated add the flour and baking powder. Do not over mix 6. Add the lemon juice and milk and gently stir in 7. Spoon into the tins and bake for approx. 20 minutes. When they have risen, light in colour and gently spring back when touched with a finger remove to cool from the oven 8. After about 10 -15 mins remove from the tin to finish cooling on a cooling rack
Ingredients for the topping 170g icing sugar 30ml water ½ lemon juice
For the filling Beat the softened butter and gradually add the icing sugar until creamy. Only then add the lemon juice and mix again For the topping In a large bowl mix the water with the icing sugar and lemon juice and leave aside Cake assembly 1. Tip Place one cake onto a cooling rack with a baking tray underneath (You will see why in no. 3). Spread a layer of the chilled lemon curd onto this layer leaving about a 2cm border. 2. I find it easier to then turn the top layer upside down so the side you want on the top is actually on the bottom then spread the butter cream on that. It is easier to do it this way rather than trying to spread buttercream onto the lemon curd. Then place this on top of the bottom layer. 3. Finally spoon the icing over the cake and leave to drizzle down the sides, which is why the baking tray is underneath! Final decoration You can add some sprinkles of lemon zest and more thyme leaves and then leave the icing to set Cut a slice and enjoy!
