EDITOR’S LETTER
It’s looking like a bloomin’ marvellous month in York. The daffodils have begun to sprout around the city walls, trees are coated in blossom, and hedges are returning to their glorious greens. Spring is a time for fresh starts. So this month, I’m concentrating on clearing out all of the rubbish I’ve amassed over the winter season. We’ve got a place at home that we call the c**p cupboard. Or ‘stuff’ cupboard for any younger readers who might be reading. Inside the cupboard, there’s a six-man tent, two Christmas trees, a bag of clothes for charity, a box of memories and some pieces of wood that I thought I might need one day. I also cringe to mention the substantial collection of snapped coat hangers that I simply didn’t know whether to recycle, break up for landfill
or try and fix. And this is just the stuff in there that I can see. There is so much more under the surface. The reason for the clear out is that we’re starting to plan a renovation at home. It's currently in the talking stage - we've taken time to look at how we use the space, how we want to live, and what we need to do to make it all as easy as possible. And of course, the first place to start is Your Local Link, with the huge range of quality tradespeople, interior design inspiration and property news - I’m sure we’ll be away in no time. Whatever you need this spring, you’ll find something on these pages. Take care, Krystal and the YLL Team x

YORK LIFE
York Stage is set to bring another brilliant movie musical to the Grand Opera House, York, for the first time ever this April. The true story of the Calendar Girls that launched a global phenomenon is now a beautifully poignant musical written by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow. When the death of a much-loved husband prompts a group of ordinary women in a small Yorkshire
Women's Institute to do things a little differently for their annual fundraising calendar. Little do they know how much of an impact their daring behaviours will have. Blasting away all preconceptions of what it is to be in a women's institute, they decide to do an artistic, nude calendar to raise money for charity. Upturning preconceptions is a dangerous business though and none of
them expects the emotional and personal ramifications, but gradually the making of the fabulous and funny calendar allows each woman to bloom. Be prepared to laugh and cry through a truly memorable evening filled with unforgettable songs proving that there is no such thing as an ordinary woman.

Boys play with new toys while girls get fed up with boys playing with new toys and decide to play a few games of their own! Sometimes this isn’t going to be a problem, but there are flashpoints
around the 3rd and 4th and again around the 18th and 19th. Some domestic remodelling going on with home improvements and DIY schemes. Girls are insistent that this work be done, boys not very enthusiastic… which, of course,
is going to wind the girls up even further. A word here to all concerned – if someone wants something done so badly, perhaps they should have a go at doing it themselves? On a different tack, April is a good month for self-employed people,

April always lifts Taurean spirits, and as the month progresses you’ll be filled with a new sense of purpose and focus. A bit like your Arian neighbour, many Bulls will be committing time and money to home improvement schemes, which should be seen not just as an investment, but also as a necessity. Established relationships seem solid enough, but younger Taureans are vulnerable to the vagaries of romance.
ST
MAY - 20TH JUN
In many respects, April looks like a bit of a messy month… Too many things on your mind, and little or no power to change your circumstances at this time. No choice then, other than to go with the flow and take things as they come – which is, of course, easier said than done! If you find yourself looking forward to a future event that fills you with fear, back off! It hasn’t happened yet and it might not happen at all!
21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
A rather curious month for the crabs! Things work out to your satisfaction, but not at all in the way you might expect them to. So, there are surprises in April, and nothing goes exactly as planned… I suppose the moral here is to stay loose with your planning, secure in the knowledge that you’re going to get what you want, but not in the way you might expect to get it.

I’ve got to do a 50/50 split here! Younger members of the sign who’ve got targets and ambitions should be very pleased with the progress made in careers and finance, but older Lions whose get-up-and-go has got-up-andgone will settle for a quiet time, and if the world is going to hell in a hand cart, well, let’s have another beer. A calming period in emotional relationships, which is particularly reassuring if there have been a few undercurrents of tension over the last month or so. A very busy and profitable period, but probably not until after the 16th or 17th. There is a repetitive scenario that causes frustration when a lover or partner seems hell-bent on doing their own thing without taking you into consideration. Some very high highs and one rather low low… The highs come when you find yourself getting attention from someone you thought hadn’t noticed you. Quite a social and easy-going month, with the accent on family matters and especially family reunions. Could be a little bit of travel, especially at weekends, but more probably in the

JAN - 18TH FEB
Well, I suspect that some decisions have been made since I last wrote this column, and I reckon that you’re reasonably confident that they have been the right ones, and so they have been, but only for the time being! You have put yourself in a holding pattern that provides stability and security, but looking 12 or 18 months up the road you know that there are big changes ahead, giving you a lot to look forward to.
PISCES 19
TH
FEB - 20TH MAR
If (and I do only say if ) there are any health concerns this month, then no matter how trifling, get ‘em sorted out post-haste. Pisceans are great at putting things off, but many a mickle maketh a muckle, and you need to monitor your energy levels. While these words might apply more to older members of the sign, even the youngsters are going to get knackered if they try burning the candle at both ends.
We don’t think twice about having our car or boiler serviced on a regular basis. We know by doing this we have the assurance that things will keep working as they should and spot any problems that might need fixing. The same applies to your legal affairs, whether that be your personal matters such as your Will or your business affairs, for example ensuring that you meet the latest HR and employment law requirements. A yearly check will help you know you are compliant as well as identifying any issues you may want to address in the year ahead. But isn’t it expensive to do that? Just like servicing your car, it is always cheaper to be proactive than reactive. It also allows you the time to make any necessary changes when it best suits your business. Did you know of the changes that are coming in April 2022? From 1st April 2022 • The National Minimum Wage and the National Living Wage rate increases. From 3rd April 2022 • Statutory Maternity Pay increases from £151.97 to £156.66 per week. • There are similar changes to Statutory Paternity Pay, Statutory Shared Parental Pay, Statutory Adoption Pay and Statutory Parental Bereavement Pay. From 6th April 2022 • Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) increases from £96.35 to £99.35 per week. • A week's pay (used to calculate statutory redundancy) increases from £544 to £571. • The maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal increases from £89,493 to £93,878. Keeping up to date is vital, but also very simple. Just join Hethertons’ Business Support Unit Newswire at www.hethertons.co.uk/ our-services/services-forbusinesses. YORK LIFE
AnEaster message by Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York Someone once said that Jesus changed the world at 3 mph. What they meant was, he walked everywhere. And as he walked, he talked and healed and encouraged and blessed. When we walk we inhabit the world differently. We take time to appreciate the smaller things, to be kind, to be patient and to live life simply. We see, hear and feel things differently. Rebecca Solnit, an American writer, puts it this way: “The mind, the body and the world are aligned, as though they were three characters finally in conversation together, three notes suddenly making a chord.” The very first Christians were accused of turning the world upside down, but actually what they did was to turn it the right way up. We are used to living in an upside down world where
things are unjust, where we don’t look after our planet, where there is poverty - even in our wealthy country, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We urgently need to learn how to tread lightly on the earth and to live in greater harmony with our world and with each other. Perhaps we all need to slow down to God’s pace and change the world at 3mph! We all know what happened to the Hare. The message of Easter is that Jesus doesn’t turn the world upside down, he turns it up the right way. By his death and rising to new life, we too can share in new beginnings and look to the future with hope for a better world. Embracing Justice is the Church of England’s theme for Lent 2022. It invites us to examine our own lives truthfully, to see the world more deeply and to pray. Find out more by visiting your local church.

Getting there
This walk explores the countryside south of Harrogate. The route crosses Crimple Valley to Follifoot then skirts Rudding Park to return to the start with a walk along the valley through woodland and fields.
Directions
1 From the southbound platform go up the steps and left over the railway bridge. In about 50 metres, take the signed bridleway left between gardens. Continue keeping left of allotments on a paved path. Go ahead over a track with a playing field left. Where the track meets a tarmac lane in the trees go right on the lane (ignore alley right) with back gardens right. At T junction turn left downhill, still on the tarmac.
4 Follow the track downhill and through a tunnel under the road. Immediately beyond turn right (ignore cycle route left) up-slope. Follow the track as it goes sharply left to the gate. Go through on a newly signed footpath with stream/pond right. Continue as signed going over a crossing track. After about 750 metres, take a narrower path heading up slope with a wooden fence to the right to a kissing gate.
5 Go through and turn left along the field edge. At the corner, turn right but soon head left through 2 At the bottom of the hill, go through a metal a gap with a bench to the right, go downhill with gate (ignore bridleway left) bearing right on a a hedge to the left. At the bottom of the field go rough track. Follow the track as it swings left down right then curve left with the track over a stream to to the gate in the valley bottom. Go through and continue ahead between hedges. At the metal gate, over stream keeping on the track uphill alongside go sharp left still on track with gardens right. Keep hedge left to a gate. Cross straight over the field on track as it swings right onto tarmac. Just beyond to a wooden gate. Continue over the bridge and funeral business buildings, where tarmac goes right follow track right, initially near the railway. Keep with climb the easily missed stone stile to follow a narrow the rough track as it bears left then heads sharp left path beside a wall, then between fences. Soon after uphill onto a gravelled surface. At the Y fork keep the path turns sharp left, go right (not ahead) down left to reach a road. a narrow alley to emerge on Follifoot’s main street. 3 Turn left on the pavement and continue alongside Turn left to the T junction in front of the gateway. a road for 800 metres passing Follifoot Hall and 6 Turn right but in 150 metres, at the far end of the a business park left. Refreshments
The walk passes two pubs, the Harewood Arms in Follifoot and the Travellers Rest on Crimple Lane (open daily except Monday). Is this walk for me?
There are lots of stiles, some of them tricky to climb. Paths are generally good but there is one very uneven section and several potentially muddy stretches. The route is undulating but with no steep or long climbs. There is some roadside walking but only one section (Direction Point 7) with no pavement. to reach a busy road. Cross with care and go over a stile opposite. Walk downhill with a wall left for 40 metres to track. Keep ahead following the track as signed with a wall left. Stay on track alongside a wall until it ends at a crossing track. Here, go ahead, still with the wall on a grass path. Continue over a stile and cross a drive keeping by the wall to a stone stile giving access to a road. Turn right on the verge. At the traffic light controlled bridge, cross over and continue on the left uphill. Just round the bend take Crimple Lane left signed ‘Travellers Rest’.
7 Follow the lane passing a pub. Continue ahead between hedges ignoring the cycle track right. Where the track ends, go over an unusual wooden stile/barrier by a gate and follow the path right to arrive at a gate/stile. Go straight across a field on an obvious path. Leave over a further stile

SPORT
YORK
Resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson, pays tribute to the late Billy McEwan. Since the last time I wrote this column, the sad news of Billy McEwan passing away reached us and so it feels only right that I start this month's column about him. For me, and many fans my age feel like he was one of the first managers that really made us sit up and take pride in supporting York City. When he came to the club we were on a real downward spiral and funnily enough, it felt like we were heading to exactly where we are right now playing regional football. Who knew that would happen all these years later…! I don’t think it has ever been mentioned enough that not only was he a great manager and got fans excited again playing some great football during his time here, but he really turned the club around in fortunes and made others take us seriously again. He dragged us from being relegation fodder to challenging to get into the football league once again. We all know how it ended for Billy at the club and he came close to succeeding before suffering defeat in the play-off semi-final against a
Morecambe team who have cemented themselves into the football league pyramid since. Thanks to Billy, we became a freescoring side who brought us to the attention of Clayton Donaldson who lit Bootham Crescent up every week, he also brought through Andy Bishop and Joe O’Neill who many also forget about in that season. Together, they scored over 50 goals between them in that first season. He improved these players, gave them a chance and also helped carve them football league careers with the likes of others he brought into the club like the midfield behemoth Emmanuel Panther, Martyn Woolford and of course Richard Brodie among others. All I can say is thank you Billy and I am sure many other fans will in doing what you did. It’s no surprise that in these recent years when we have been as bad as we have been that I see on Twitter other fans saying ‘Bring back Billy McEwan! He’ll give them a rocket!’ And I bet he would too! Thank you, Billy, for the good times and for allowing me to reminisce some good

times. Moving back into the present, it has also seen many of us start to look up the table again. I hope that the good fortunes do continue. We have managed to win 6 games in a row, the first time since the 2017/18 season. John Askey, whatever happens come the end of this season, must stay beyond the summer and be given chance to build his side with us. What we have seen has been nothing short of Credit: Billy McEwan by Dashwortly miraculous in the turnaround on Wikimedia Commons that we have seen from the players that were here under Steve Watson as well as still concerned at the lack of defensive adding the necessary quality to bolster cover but it really does feel like a team those who remain. effort that you trust whoever comes in The biggest mention has to go to Mitch will do a job and put a shift in. When Hancox who has been a revelation was the last time we said that? since being moved up the pitch into Another big mention to the unbeaten a midfield position. The energy, and Ladies side too who continue to simply most importantly, the goals he has been score goals for fun at the moment. It scoring sum up this team so well. Let's feels that there is huge optimism around hope the performances continue. I am all the teams at the moment. Keep it up!

RECORD NUMBER OF NEW BUSINESSES I N N O R T H Y O R KS H I R E John Korchak, Operations Director at Inform Direct The latest figures show that the number of businesses in North Yorkshire reached a record high during 2021, with 7614 companies formed. In York, there were 1328 companies formed in 2021, while Harrogate had 1217 new companies registered.
While the figures sound impressive, it’s worth noting that 6384 businesses were also dissolved in the same time frame. The statistics come from the Inform Direct Review of Company Formations using data from Companies House and the Office for National Statistics.
John Korchak, Operations Director at Inform Direct, said: “It is excellent news to see so many new businesses being started in North Yorkshire, a trend which has propelled the county to a new record number of resident companies.”

How to Transform Your Retirement We can all agree, that tax is just… taxing. See what we did there? No? Anyways, moving on. We’re going to let you in on some pretty shocking news. Yep, you still have to pay tax on your income from your pension after you’ve retired. Why – who knows? You get taxed on countless of things throughout your working life, so why should you get taxed again, when you’ve stopped working. It just baffles our minds. Imagine you’ve grafted a nine to five, five days a week. You’ve put aside and invested enough money to fund and fulfil your desired retirement. And when the time has finally come for you to put your feet up, a huge chunk of that cash is taken before you’ve even managed to put your pj’s on. And some people think that’s alright? Retirement is supposed to be your chance to live the life you’ve always wanted. Your chance to do the things you never could before. In the end, you want to ensure you can live your desired future lifestyle. You don’t want any additional stress – through a huge tax bill on your front doorstep. Yeah, approaching a new chapter in your life is scary, and change can be uncomfortable. But we can all agree that it shouldn’t be like that. Having a financial plan provides you with answers to your queries, a sense of hope and security. Before her passing, Julie Wilson put her expert knowledge into her new book ‘Tax Free Retirement’. This book simply explains how tax in retirement works and the things you need to think about. It’ll also help you pay less tax, keep more cash, and completely transform your retirement. Oh yeah - Julie also predicted the National Insurance Hike, so I wonder what else she’s predicted… We know that managing your finances effectively leads to increased wellbeing and a better quality of life. And that’s exactly what we help our clients achieve. Hopefully this book can help you get one step closer. Having everything completely under control and knowing that you do is priceless. If you’d like a FREE copy, use the cut out on this page, give us a call at 01904 661140 or email us at office@pen-life.co.uk. We hope this guide helps you take the initiative. during cooking. The induction hob also has another trick up its sleeve though - it only starts cooking if the pan is present. Once the pan is removed (or if the hob is activated by accident) no heating will take place and it will turn itself off. Most also feature a child lock if you have an “inquisitive” youngster at home.
Hygiene
Cost
The cleanliness of a hob is down to two things, getting dirt out of all the nooks and crannies, and preventing spills from getting welded onto the surface of the hob in the first place. The worst-case scenario is gas, where you have not only indentations and welds on the surface of the hob itself but also multiple parts to the burner itself, all of this makes it very difficult to keep clean. In the case of the older style ceramic hobs, they are much easier to clean due to having a flat glass surface but if something you are cooking boils over it will stick to the glass due to the extreme heat. The difference with an induction hob here is that the glass remains cool so spills can be easily wiped up without fear of burning the cloth or your hand.
If you've ever looked at the relative costs of these cooktops you will know that induction is a chunk more expensive, especially when compared with gas. Gas is a firm favourite of chefs but on the flip side, the UK government is actively looking to phase out fossil fuels and there are professional chefs like Michel Roux Jnr changing over to induction. To understand the real lifetime cost of a hob, you need to look at the running costs every time you use them and further, look at the efficiency of the products. With gas you can end up heating up your room as much as your pan, with an induction hob you just heat the pan and this results in a pan of water boiling in roughly half the time a ceramic would take and significantly quicker than gas. Herbert Todd & Son Monks Cross Drive, Monks Cross, York, YO32 9QZ 01904 628676 www.htodd.co.uk
Safety In terms of the relative safety of these hobs, it’s obvious that given we know the glass remains cool with induction, it will also be much safer if touched accidentally or during a clean-up

Many of you reading this will regularly cook on a gas hob at home or maybe an electric ceramic hob, each have their own idiosyncrasies, so let’s have a look at these vs the modern induction electric hob. To make it easy we can break the differences down into the three broad headings of cleanliness, safety and cost.

Become a Borrower! A new lending library is launching in York Ok, hands up if you’ve bought a tool before only to discover that you might never use it again, and now it’s taking up valuable space in your home. Many of the items we buy and store in our houses get used a couple of times a year and are expensive to initially purchase. That’s where the lending library comes in at The Recycle Project, York. They’re launching a new project, called The Borrowers, to coincide with their first birthday at the start of April. It’s will allow people to borrow the things that they need, and return them once they’re done. We’re talking about power tools, gardening machinery, camping gear for your annual holiday or even a baby gate if you’ve got family coming to stay. It’s all part of their ethos to encourage a circular economy, reducing waste and putting items back into the community where they’re needed. People can sign up to become Borrowers,
and pay a monthly subscription fee of £22.50 and borrow everything they need, or pay-as-you-go for individual items. Items can be booked out for a week or even longer, provided no one has booked in afterwards. There’s set to be several collection and drop-off points across York, with the main hub being at The Recycle Project’s HQ on Yorvale Business Park, off James Street. Brad Mulhearn, CEO, has a simple explanation for how the idea came about: “Our mission is to get as many items back into the community as we can, and we are always looking for ways to promote a circular economy, that’s what it’s all about - it’s our ethos. We are currently recycling 20 tonnes a month.” And for those of you wishing you hadn’t purchased that foldable workbench that takes up a tonne of space in the garage, why not get in touch with the guys at The Recycle Project? They’re always looking to grow their collection in the lending library.

Sunshine and showers provide the perfect growing environment for all plants, including the ones that you might not want in your garden. It’s best to get to annual weeds before they set seed, so get to work hand pulling them as soon as they raise their heads.
New hot tub showroom for York A luxury indoor and outdoor living shop selling hot tubs, garden rooms and pools has opened just north of York. The Farmhouse Living Shop, on the A64 between York and Malton, has undergone an impressive transformation into a high-end showroom and focuses on hot tubs ranging from £5,000 to £30,000. Owner, Lisa Fletcher, says that the
initial focus will be on selling hot tubs but has big plans to expand the range of stock on offer to shoppers as the business grows. The showroom is open Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm and 10am-4pm on Sundays. To make an appointment, call 01904 468096 or simply turn up at The Farmhouse Living Shop, Malton Road, York, YO32 9TW.
Sow seed
Whether it’s fruit and veg or flowers, April is a busy month for planting. Hardy annuals such as pot marigolds and native wildflowers can go into the ground this month. Tomatoes, chillies, cucumbers and courgettes can be sown in pots, and potatoes can be planted.
Make your grass greener
Lawns that need patching are best fixed while the weather is still damp and cool. Cut out the damaged turf, lightly fork the existing soil and sprinkle with compost or topsoil. Scatter the grass seed and cover it with more topsoil or compost before giving it a good water.

An apple tree has been planted in York Museum Gardens to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Mayor of York and young city leaders joined the Sherriff of York Councillor Ashley Mason JP to plant the Ribston Pippin tree in the Edible Wood. The tree is a renowned Yorkshire variety raised in the early 18th Century at Ribston Hall in Knaresborough. It was chosen to recognise the productive and fruitful reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It has been planted as part of The Queen’s
Green Canopy planting initiative, which invites people from across the UK to 'Plant a tree for the Jubilee.' The tree was provided courtesy of fruit tree specialists RV Roger Nursery of Pickering. Steve Williams, Garden Manager at York Museums Trust, said: “We’re thrilled to dedicate an area of the York Museum Gardens to celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The initiative is about planting sustainably, which is a really important part of what we do in the Gardens."

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft Sometimes it seems lettuce is losing out to other leafy salads. When I began growing, it was just about the only leafy salad vegetable gardeners cultivated. Salad leaves like rocket, mizuna or lamb’s lettuce were almost unheard of – rocket wasn’t for eating, it was either something that went to the moon or was let off on Guy Fawkes Night.
Now, these and other leafy salad crops fill supermarket salad bags. Often, if gardeners grow lettuce at all, it’s the cutand-come-again type to be jumbled with other leaves in a mixed salad. You might be thinking that I’m not a fan of rocket and its other leafy relatives. Far from it: I like and grow a wide range of mixed salad leaves. For m, though, these are late autumn, winter and spring crops, best grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Growing leaf salad in summer, especially outdoors, isn’t easy. Rocket, for example, tends to ‘rocket’ in warm weather, throwing up a seed head at the expense of leaves. What’s more, those leaves are often shot through with holes caused by flea beetle. Lettuce, on the other hand, is generally less bothered by warmer weather and pests. That’s not to say that
it's trouble-free. Slugs will munch the outer leaves, and various insect pests will infest the plants. If not harvested promptly or in very hot weather, lettuce will also run to seed. On the whole, though, lettuce will produce better quality and more plentiful leaves in summer conditions than crops such as rocket and its friends. In fact, it’s all too easy to have a glut of lettuce. If you sow or plant lots at one time the result will be loads ready all at once. Unless you eat prodigious quantities or resort to the not to be recommended lettuce soup, there’ll be many left over, which will quickly deteriorate or run to seed. The key to growing lettuce, therefore, is to sow or plant little and often. Late March or early April is the time to get started. You could risk sowing directly in the soil but a safer option is to sow seeds in a pot or tray under cover and plant out in a month or so when the plants have established. Another option is to buy a few seedlings from a garden centre. That’ll give a head start. To keep
the supply going, make further sowings or plantings at roughly three-week intervals. If using plants, the last planting can be in mid-August. This should give a harvest into October. There are hundreds of lettuce varieties usually grouped into four main types. Three of these, iceberg (crisphead), cos (romaine), or soft-leaved (butterhead), are usually harvested as entire heads. The other category, ‘leaf lettuce’ can be cropped over several weeks with a few leaves removed at each picking. These are useful if you don’t want a lot of leaves at one time. Popular varieties include the green Salad Bowl or the red fringed Lollo Rosso. For me, these are a bit floppy and lacking in bite. In the main, I grow heading types. Cos are probably my favourites. These tend to hold in good condition longer than butterheads and are less tricky to grow than icebergs. If I had to recommend one cos variety it would be the longestablished Little Gem or a similar newer variety such as Maureen or the red-leaved Little Leprechaun.

Give us a home... HAVE A HOME?
THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE. A care home in Nether Poppleton is helping its residents to publish their own life storybooks. The books will be professionally produced at York's oldest printer, Quacks The Printer, established in 1703. Susie Carman, lifestyle manager, has spent hours interviewing residents and their friends and families and gathering images from throughout their lives. She says that working together on the books has helped to maintain connections between families throughout the lockdowns and has allowed staff to really understand the people they care for. One of the first residents to receive his finished publication was John Boorman, aged 85, who grew up in south London. In John’s book, he tells the tale of his school playground being bombed by a German warplane and later on in his life, meeting his wife Rose in Stafford whilst on national service. John said: “Putting this book together has made me remember my wife and all of the happy times
Matthew Bannerman, carer, and Phyllis Mayhew, 96, with her life story. we shared together. I love the book. It means a lot to me that someone has taken the trouble to write about my life.” Home manager Shane Talbot said: "Creating life storybooks has helped everyone at Ebor Court to understand more about our residents at every stage of their lives and to see the child, teenager and young adult behind every resident.” Ebor Court is a purpose-built luxury care home operated by Ideal Carehomes. It is rated good by the Care Quality Commission.

SHERB, 8yrs, Male Sherb has come from a home where he has been part of the family since he was just a wee kitten. He was living with other cats previously, but after a separation and relocating, the dynamic changed and disputes between his feline companions became more frequent. It was clear that they no longer enjoyed each other's company. At the moment Sherb is still a little bit frightened at all the new sights and sounds of the centre but given time, he’ll be a lovely companion for the right family. Sherb likes lots of attention and enjoys being out in the garden, so he would suit a home where he will be the only cat with a nice green space to stretch his paws in! LIMBERG, 1yr, Male This rather handsome young man was living in a flat along with his owner and their young child. Unfortunately, as he couldn’t access any outdoor space he was finding life a bit chaotic and when he couldn’t find somewhere to hide, he became really worried and upset with the situation. Since he has come to the Adoption Centre, he has been really sweet, he is quite a chatty boy, and as soon as he spots us near his pen he will approach the gate and start ‘talking’ to us. We think that in a quieter home where he can do his own thing and have some time outdoors to explore and burn off some energy, he should be a much more settled cat and become a wonderful companion. If you could give one of these cutie pies a home, contact York Cats Protection Adoption Centre on 01904 760356 or via www.cats.org.uk/york

A place to grow Consultation for a new children’s activity centre in York
A public consultation is ongoing over plans for a new purpose-built children’s activity centre for York-based charity, The Island. A dedicated hub is proposed for its 8-acre site off New Lane in Huntington which would allow the charity to help even more children achieve their potential. The site is owned by The Island, a charity that provides mentoring and support for vulnerable children in the city. The charity is currently based at a facility on Shipton Road but wants to relocate its work to a fit-for-purpose facility. The draft proposals have been designed with the involvement of young people including mentees in dedicated workshop sessions. They are landscape-based with sports facilities, gardening, woodland walks and outdoor play space. There will be a single sympathetically designed building within the site. Flexible space for activities and outdoor recreational space will allow The Island to offer a wide range of activities to help young people learn and grow. The vast majority of the site will be kept as landscaped space with an outdoor
gym, parkland, meadows, sensory garden and growing areas for the children to enjoy. The new building will feature facilities such as a café, recording studio as well as therapy, tutoring and health advisory rooms. The award-winning architect Vincent & Brown, along with Re-form Landscape Architects, have designed the facility following a series of workshops with young children who helped to develop the plans to ensure that the proposals can offer as many benefits as possible for future generations. York-based O’Neill Associates are acting as planning consultants and Aspect4 as Project Manager and Cost Consultants. A public exhibition took place in February at the site and people can still view and comment on the plans at: www. theislandyork.org/ consultation. The Island, formed in 2007, has supported over 3,000 young people in York and includes
support for young children to adulthood. This work has however been constrained by the lack of space and resources, outside recreational space and incomegenerating opportunities, so a new dedicated facility will allow the charity to increase its support for vulnerable young people. The Island hope to work with other local charities and community groups to make the best use of the new facilities.
Nigel Poulton MBE, CEO of The Island said, “We have been greatly encouraged by the feedback over our exciting plans for a dedicated facility at New Lane. A purpose-built children’s activity centre would help us in our aim to provide a safe, inspirational environment for children, young people and those who support them, ensuring that no young person is left behind.”

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
Do you suffer from back pain or chronic pain? Or are you looking for joint replacement rehabilitation? TRTrehab Studio, based in the outskirts of York, is a place like no other. It prides itself on being a place where you can forget about your pain, sometimes for the first time in ages. The studio specialises in back pain, chronic pain, joint replacement rehabilitation and strokes. The team help people recover through physical therapy, functional training, mindset coaching and massage. And there are lots of happy customers who can attest:
"Following an operation on my spine in 2011 which was only partially successful, my back deteriorated. In the absence of support from NHS, I sought advice from TRTrehab. They provided me with rehabilitation strategies, and over a period of time, my quality of life has been restored." Roger, New Earswick "My therapist was very caring, with great skills that I found very useful. I can certainly recommend her to all my friends. One of the best results I got was relief from pain and stress." Margaret, York Book your free consultation today, visit trtrehab.co.uk or call 01904 404 729.

ITALIAN INSPIRATION
Kerry Lakey
This month, our resident travel expert, Kerry Lakey, shares some of Italy’s best kept secrets. Thanks to a fantastic climate, enviable gastronomy and wines, stunning scenery and cities rich in heritage and architecture, Italy has long been a favourite for British travellers. Whilst many head to the popular cities of Venice and Rome, the picturesque Lake Garda or the cliff-top towns of the Amalfi coast this month, we are exploring some lesser-known areas perfect for your summer break. Possibly one of the best kept secrets when it comes to the Italian lakes is Lake Orta. Located in the north of Italy, a stay at the Hotel San Rocco, a 17th-century former monastery, places you on the lakefront in Orta San Giulio. The town really is a hidden gem with its pastel-coloured buildings and picturesque cobbled streets that are home to craft shops and lively cafés where you can enjoy
a cappuccino or aperitivo. If you are looking to discover more about the history of the area visit the UNESCOprotected Orta Sacro Monte, visit a collection of centuries-old chapels overlooking the lake. Take a short break in Bologna, the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region and one of Italy’s most elegant and exciting cities. Food lovers should take a tour of the city a sample local specialities of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Bolognese ragu, and mortadella. For car enthusiasts, the Ferrari Museum is within easy access of the city. Or, if you prefer a real Italian experience, spend an afternoon with a local family at the food market before a home cooking class with a local expert. Away from the large cruise liners

sailing the Italian coastline is the beautiful S.S La Venezia, this elegant cruise ship holds just 126 guests sailing from Venice. Explore the peaceful canals unique to Burano, Mazzorbo and Torcello before calling at Chioggia—a charming southern port loved by fishermen, artists and anyone looking for unique gifts or souvenirs. No two holidays in Italy are the same, so whether you want to do a short break, a tailor-made multicentre or a cruise, get in touch to discuss your requirements and leave the rest to us and our trusted suppliers. What’s new?
CORRECTION – Natur Boutique London Cinnamon And Black Pepper Tea In our previous issue we stated, about this tea, that “Ingredients helping to boost the body’s metabolism and insulin resistance makes this a fantastic drink for weight loss, too.”. The
brand would like to point out that they make no health claims about the product or its ingredients. They also comment “Please see pack for health contradictions”.
Tracklements Soured Plum and Black Pepper Chutney £3.50 from www.tracklements.co.uk Inspired by Umeboshi, a traditional Japanese pickle, Tracklements Soured Plum and Black Pepper Chutney delivers a sweet and spicy flavour with notes of ginger and garlic. It’s vegan, gluten-free, and plays nicely with mature cheddar, as a dip for pakoras and even compliments meats like duck and venison. Benefit Water £1.29 from www.thebenefitbrand.com Love a fizzy drink? This range of caffeine, sugar and sweetener free sparkling waters all contain magnesium and vitamins B3, B6, B9, B12, all of which contribute to normal psychological function. We absolutely loved ENERGY: Sparkling Mango & Coconut. The sweet, tropical tasting pop is a real thirst quencher. Two Bees Honey £5.99 for 250g from twobees.buzz The Two Bees honey experts have travelled the globe to track down top-notch farmers and beekeepers and work with them to deliver delicious, single-source natural honey. We tried them all at YLL HQ and chose the Mexican Orange Blossom Pure Honey as our favourite. This fragrant honey has a soft citrus aroma followed by a rich orange flavour and floral accents. Yum!
