Events, Food and Drink

Dear reader, We’re now in the last real month of summer and there is plenty of fun still to be had in York this month. The much-loved York Maze is now open for all to enjoy and here at the YLL office, a couple of us lucky folk got the chance to view it all from the heights of a helicopter (cue Mission Impossible music). This month, we’re also celebrating the wins of York businesses both big and small…from the city’s fabulous National Railway Museum to the successful start-up, YorkFacePaint. If you’re looking for a fresh start for the new term, want to take on a new career or

are looking to up-skill, York Learning are also preparing for their big career fair next month (turn to P. 22) It’s also that time of year again when we catch up with York Against Cancer to find out what they’ve been up to and how you might be able to get involved. Make sure you make use of outdoor spaces in the final weeks of summer too. Whether you’re relaxing in the garden, walking, or having a boogie in Rowntree Park (turn to P. 42 to find out more) we hope August brings you plenty of sunshine and great memories. Enjoy! The YLL Team x

HOROSCOPES Leo 23

RD

LEO 23

RD

JUL - 22ND AUG

A fun time for the boys and an annoying time for the girls. This is probably because the boys are having fun while the girls are not! Either way, the accent is on leisure and pleasure, and social aspects are very bright and interesting, especially for Leos in their late teens and twenties. Older Leos enjoy more modest, but much more meaningful delights. Nostalgic anniversaries arrive towards the month’s end.

the last minute, go with the flow of this because they’ll be changed to your long-term advantage, even if you don’t see it in that light at the time. Whether you act on them immediately or not, I don’t know, but you will be making some very important decisions in the third week of the month which will affect your long-term future security and stability.

LIBRA 23

ASTROLOGIST

SEPT - 22ND OCT

This may be a month for reviewing the value of a few friendships and associations. You seem to be in more than one give-and-take association wherein you do all the giving and someone else does all the taking. No tantrums or huge arguments here, but just the birth of some quiet resolve which suggests you’re going to be about the business of redressing these imbalances.

SCORPIO 23

RD

OCT - 21ST NOV

There are some dangers here affecting younger members of the sign who may be inclined to act just a little bit too impulsively and go marching into situations where angels fear to tread. Good advice for all Scorpios is to enjoy what is on offer but don’t look for more than what you’re getting. A measured approach to all choices and decisions serves you best, both in business and in affairs of the heart.

SAGITTARIUS 22

ND

NOV - 21ST DEC

A bit of a boost to your social life with unexpected invitations to engagement parties and weddings. If a family member is coming to you for advice, advise them as an objective friend and not as a mother/father/auntie/uncle, etc. It’s quite a good money month, especially if you find yourself on the

receiving end of some refund or the payment of an old debt.

CAPRICORN 22

ND

DEC - 19TH JAN

In many respects quite a lovely month for the majority of Capricorns. There is a feeling of positive progress being made on the work scene, with praise from bosses and some extra cash in your pay packet. Also a thoroughly brilliant family reunion (probably mid-month) with someone you haven’t seen for ages, and in more ways than one, August is party time so enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

AQUARIUS 20

TH

JAN - 18TH FEB

If you find yourself getting a little tired of carrying the can for other people’s clangers, this would be a good time to dig in your heels and make it clear that you’re not going to be doing this anymore. August slips by relatively uneventfully,

PISCES 19

TH

FEB - 20TH MAR

A lovely month for building new friendships and emotional relationships and it seems to me that there will be a member of the opposite sex going out of their way to please you in any way they can. I hope you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth or let old wounds and scars get in the way of accepting what is on offer at this time. While there is some safety in solitude there is a lot more fun to be had in numbers.

ARIES 21

ST

MAR - 19TH APRIL

Okay, it’s August and the season of the summer holidays, so no wonder there are some strong travel aspects in your profile. However, where you go may not be nearly as important as who you go there with and what you do while you’re away. This is a month for making spontaneous emotional decisions, but just because they may be spontaneous doesn’t mean that they will not be important.

TAURUS 20

TH

APR - 20TH MAY

There should be enough going on in August to ignite your enthusiasm and

imagination. More than one reunion in the middle of the month, both involving some degree of travel. Relationships which have stood the test of time should be rock solid, but new relationships have a few ups and downs in the process of finding their groove. Work routines are fairly predictable: no financial threats but no major gains either.

GEMINI 21

ST

YORK LIFE

but you’ll be looking at calendars and diaries and counting down the days to a very special date later in the year which will represent a major change in the pattern of your life.

MAY - 20TH JUNE

Many members of the sign will find August to be a laid-back and restful month – which is really bad news if you’re looking for some excitement and adventure, but really good news if you’re not! Some people will find it easy to cherish the simple things in life, while others, perhaps the younger generation, will be champing at the bit with frustration and impatience.

CANCER 21

ST

JUN - 22ND JULY

Anything to do with property is high profile this month and there will be some big chunks of money invested in your comfort and long-term desires. On a different note, there is not a lot of physical energy with you at this time, so pace yourself and take events in your stride. Parent and child relationships still represent an area of tension, especially if you’re dealing with teens and young adults.

Getting there

BE TWEEN HARROGATE AND RIPON This walk traverses the undulating countryside between Harrogate and Ripon, much of it managed by the Mountgarret Estate. Mainly crossing farmland with a few stretches of woodland, it visits Burton Leonard, Brearton and a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve.

Directions 1. From the parking area, take the path running alongside the churchyard wall (if coming from the bus stop turn left immediately beyond the church). Go over the stile into the next field keeping near the left edge and continue through the hedge gap into further field heading towards the wood ahead. Cross the stile and continue with the wood on your right. At another stile go right of the hedge to reach the track. Go left on the track. Now continue on the track initially with the hedge on the left, then through the dogleg, after which the hedge is to the right. 2. Soon after the track bends right at the ‘No Public Access’ sign on right, go left off-track up to the right edge of the field. After about 150 metres, at the three-way sign, go right up the steps into the wood. Follow a clear path uphill through the trees and keep the hedge left with the field right to meet the narrow road by houses. Turn left and follow the road into Burton Leonard. Turn right at the green, heading to the post office. 3. Turn right (signed Copgrove/Knaresborough) with the Royal Oak pub on the right. Continue on the road beyond the houses for 100 metres but where the road bends left go right on the tarmac lane. Ignore the right turn by the triangular green keeping ahead. Where the tarmac ends, head

off the track on the parallel path into the nature reserve. Remain on the narrow path through the trees and the gate on your left. Stay with the path downhill, turning right at the back of the house to the gate giving access back onto the track. Turn left to the bridge beside the ford and continue ahead up the concrete track. 4. At the T junction, turn left. Now continue on an obvious track passing through the gates and pasture, then between the hedges before eventually reaching a tarmac lane with the stream on the left. 5. Turn right on the tarmac. Where the tarmac lane goes sharp right keep ahead on a signed bridleway. Continue into the woodland on a narrower path. Keep on the path downhill under the power lines. 6. At the junction where the wood ends, turn right through the gate into a long grassy field. Initially keep close to the hedge on the left then follow the direction of the power lines. Nearing the field end, go slightly left to a gap between the hedge and wooden fence to join the enclosed rough track. Continue on track which soon becomes a hedged tarmac lane. Remain with this for over a kilometre until the track joins from the right. Here, go left over stile opposite and walk diagonally across the field aiming to cross the stile near the buildings.

Time:

The walk can be started from South Stainley (recommended), Burton Leonard, or Brearton. South Stainley is 23 miles from York via the A59, B6165 and A61. Turn off the latter road at the pub and go down the narrow lane to find a small parking area by the church (donation requested). Public transport to South Stainley from York is by train to Harrogate then the frequent no.36 bus to The Inn, South Stainley. Another public transport option is the infrequent no.22 bus from York rail station to Burton Leonard (this service does not operate on a Sunday).

Is this walk for me? The walk is fairly long with a few ups and downs, but no steep gradients. There are a few stiles to cross and several fields where grazing cattle or horses may be encountered. Much of the walk is on hard surfaces but there are several potentially muddy stretches. Most of the route is easy to follow with good signage. However, there are several points where care is needed to stay on track – see underlined sections in the directions.

What to see The main attraction is the traditional and unspoilt countryside through which the walk passes. Burton Leonard with its green and array of different houses is one of the area’s most attractive villages. Burton Leonard Lime Quarries nature reserve has a mix of habitats including limestone grassland with the locally rare burnet rose and autumn gentian.

Refreshments As well as The Inn near the start, there’s the Royal Oak in Burton Leonard (closed Monday and Tuesday) and The Malt Shovel at Brearton. The shop in Burton Leonard offers takeaway sandwiches and drinks (closed Saturday from 1pm and on Sunday).

8. In 150 metres, where the road bends sharp left, turn right onto the concrete track (bridleway sign). Ignore the left turn after 400 metres curving uphill with the wood on the right. Keep left at the next junction continuing to follow the lane as it bends left downhill. Eventually, the lane crosses the bridge and runs close to the stream, reaching the edge of South Stainley and the parking area (if returning to the bus stop remain on the lane to the main road; if starting from Burton Leonard turn right beside the churchyard wall to continue.)

7. Turn left and follow the road right into Brearton, walking down the village street. Opposite the pub, take the narrow lane right (Lilly Gate Lane). Where this bends sharp right go left over a stile to walk down the left edge of the field. At the corner, climb the stile to find a further stile a few metres on the left beyond the hedge corner. Walk along the right edge of the next field but nearing the end, veer left to the stile 30 metres to the left of the corner. Go ahead (right of tree), then keep in the same direction walking alongside the hedge left to reach the gate. Turn right.

GADGET OF THE MONTH

It’s full steam ahead for the National Railway Museum of York! Earlier last month, Tripadvisor announced the top ten winners of its 2022 Travellers' Choice ‘Best of the Best’ Things to Do Awards, which included the National Railway Museum of York. Eighth on the list, York's famous attraction honours railroad inventions from the past, present, and future with locomotives, a spectacular collection of engineering wonders, and other fantastic displays. In addition to undiscovered gems, these awards highlight all the must-do activities in the UK. The Travellers'

Choice Awards are the best source for tried-and-tested experiences and with the summer travel season in full swing, this award-winning title will likely encourage many more visitors. “We’re absolutely thrilled to have been recognised by Tripadvisor as one of the top 10 attractions to visit within the UK and Channel Islands. These rankings are based on real-life, first-hand reviews of people who have visited our museum and rated us highly so it’s great to know that people really enjoy their visits to us.” Judith McNicol, Director of

Currently on sale for £98.99 from www.vonhaus.com Here’s the latest scoop at the YLL office. This month, we are ice cream OBSESSED. Maybe it’s the hot weather, or maybe it's just our collective sweet tooth, either way, there is one particular gadget that’s got us excited for the sunny month of August… and that is the VonShef Ice Cream Maker. Let your imagination for flavour run wild and whip up the ice cream of dreams in under an hour, straight from the comfort of your own home. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous this clever contraption is designed to create other tasty treats from gelato, sorbet, sundaes and frozen yoghurt too. The VonShef’s compact design makes it easy to operate and store, and the built-in compressor allows you to freeze your ice cream efficiently. Better still, when you’ve finished whipping up your sweet treats, the removable bowl and stainless steel exterior are super easy to clean with minimal fuss. The generous size of the maker means that it's fit to feed family and friends (or you can work your way through a tub yourself - we won’t judge!) And, if you’re looking for inspiration, it also comes with a few handy recipes to get you started.

the National Railway Museum, states. Although this nomination will hopefully draw more tourists to discover the wonderful city and rich history of York, there is much to be said about the hard work of the team behind this popular attraction. Nichol continues, “This award is testament to the hard work and dedication of all our colleagues who go above and beyond to ensure the museum delivers a truly memorable and enjoyable day out for all of our visitors.” The National Railway Museum has been a York treasure since its official opening in 1975 and with its 50th anniversary on the horizon, we’d like to wish them many more years of continued success. Congratulations team!

SPORT

YORK

COLUMNIST

We hear from our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson. It has been a whirlwind of a month for York City as they enter a new era. I think many City fans would agree that a dark cloud has been lifted from over the LNER Community Stadium. The hybrid partnership of sporting businessman, Glen Henderson and the York City Supporters Trust feels like a real breath of fresh air. They are already getting to work to make sure our club is the best that it can be. All I can say is that all is feeling positive with fans all pulling in the same direction - the sort of momentum that can make a club a force to be reckoned with - and hopefully, that takes us into a new season back in the National League, full of belief that we can cause an upset. As well as the takeover, we have seen fixtures released as we kick off the new season at home to Woking with a squad that feels like it has been well put together by the manager, John Askey, and hopefully improved the areas that lacked in the season just gone. There has been a raft of new signings since I last wrote this column but some of the standouts that we have seen in pre-season have been Manny Duku and Alex Hurst. They have caused teams lots of problems and look like they will be two creative assets and

Please see website for opening times

20 20

goal scorers. Duku and Hurst will certainly add to some of the key players that we have managed to keep hold of for this coming season, with the likes of Maz Kouyhar who just puts you at ease every time he is on the ball. There will be competition all over the pitch with the coming season and the five youth players being offered pro deals. It all feels like we are going in a great direction but as always, I’m sure I am not alone in having a feeling of scepticism too. We support York City after all and we have to be on our toes! Sticking with football too, it has not only been the men that have started up well but the Ladies too. They have begun pre-season themselves and they too have been strengthening their squad and getting their foundations sorted for their new season. With this new era hopefully, we will see more games for them played at the LNER Community Stadium. We have all seen yet again the success of women’s football with

the current Euro 2022 campaign being played right here on our doorstep and its rise continues. It feels right that they have the chance to play there too over the coming season and years ahead. Switching to rugby league, York City Knights are still challenging at the top end of the Championship. During the last few years that the Knights have been in the division, they have certainly managed to make a name for themselves and hold their own.

Simon Pattinson

Hopefully, they can continue to stay within reach as they continue to push for the dream promotion of having the chance to play in the Super League. Who would have thought that there would be so much positivity surrounding our sporting teams in the city! It almost feels like both clubs now have owners who believe in the real potential the fans have always seen to seriously grow into clubs we can be proud of and see them challenge higher up the leagues. Fingers crossed!

BUSINESS

MAKING STEPS TO SUCCESS City of York Council and York Learning are hosting their second postpandemic jobs fair, following the success of the first in March 2022. This spring, York Learning hosted 60 different employers and this time around, are expecting up to 80. The York Jobs Fair will take place on Wednesday the 21st of September at the York Railway Institute on Queens Street, where doors will open at 10am. Employers are currently falling over themselves to fill posts with the right people and the best opportunity of landing yourself a new job is talking directly to an employer. Whether you’re looking for a new job, or just inspiration there is plenty to gain from visiting a jobs fair and its a great chance to meet your potential new colleagues and sell them your skills and qualities…you may even be offered an interview then and there! When York Learning asked what employers were looking for, they found that enthusiasm was favoured more than experience. Also, where jobs required

22

training, many employers also offered it. Digital skills, maths, and English are key to job success too and York Learning can even help you get free qualifications (subject to certain criteria) as well as advise on Apprenticeship opportunities. If you’re not working and you need extra support, you can talk to York Learning at the fair about their free employability projects. They can also arrange a careers appointment for you, if you’re unemployed, working, and wanting to change jobs or to find out about training options. So, if you’re looking for a job, or to get information and guidance about qualifications and next steps, come on down! This is the biggest jobs fair in York, with lots of exciting roles.

Face painting was never originally on the cards for Alex Johnson, but after a decade of hard work and practicing special painting techniques, Alex’s flair for creativity, vision and intricate set of skills brought her to form her very own professional side-hustle, FacePaintYork, in 2016. From painting the faces of kids, big kids, mums-to-be, mischievous grandparents and even Brian- fromthe office, FacePaintYork knows no bounds. Be it a family party, a corporate event, a baby-bump painting, a wedding glitter bar or festival painting, Alex’s services undoubtedly bring joy, sparkle and brightness to the city of York. Despite a delayed and unsettling period of uncertainty brought about by Covid, Alex’s wish to take FacePaintYork from side-hustle to fulltime gig was granted in the latter half of 2021, when York Council provided a voucher scheme for local small businesses affected by Covid. After qualifying for the scheme, Alex was offered £1000 and with the support of local business, Mint Sauce Media was able to invest in the company’s growth with a new website and rebrand. Reflecting on her successful year in business, Alex says, “I feel incredibly lucky to have had support and encouragement from so many avenues. Not only friends and

family who were unfailingly in my corner, but from more surprising directions. The City of York Council and their partners, brilliant local suppliers, incredible independent venues who saw the potential to boost their own stories by adding FacePaintYork to their happy occasions.” A year after the trials and tribulations of the pandemic and FacePaintYork is growing strong. Alex continues to pour passion into her project, adding new skills and exciting elements to the business. Alex states, “I’ve gone from the shattered post-Covid shell of my business to super-sonic in less than a year. And if anything I just cherished the opportunity to say thank you.” She continues, “I look forward to bringing colour, sparkle and joy to the city (and beyond) for many years to come.” For more information, visit facepaintyork.com.

LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD

Animals are amazing and there is much to be said about the benefits of having a pet. Before you pick up your new, furry little friend it’s really important to think about pet-proofing your home, however. Here are a few things to consider: Recce those rooms Keep your eyes peeled for any unsafe gaps that your pet could get stuck in and block them up. It also might be an idea to get some safety cupboard locks to prevent any problems. Make sure you also keep doors closed and

invest in baby gates for dogs too. Hide your things! Young animals can be especially mischievous. Although encouraging play is healthy, it is highly advised that you store away any important belongings so they don’t end up getting broken…or chewed! To eat, or not to eat? Make sure you do your research before bringing your pet home, as to what they can and can’t eat. It’s also very important to think about any plants you have around the house

as certain ones can be dangerous for your furry friend. Finally, keep all cleaning and medicinal products out of reach too. Give them time No matter how melt-worthy those puppy dog, play-with-me-eyes can be, it is important to allow your new pet space and time to get settled. Think about creating an area for your animal, or a particular room so they have a familiar setting where they feel safe and secure.

Time to update your fridge freezer? Temperatures are rising and making life difficult for fridge freezers that have to work much harder to keep your food cool. If yours is struggling, then fear not because we have loads of stock at Herbert Todd. With same-day delivery if you call in or call up before 11am, we are also currently offering free delivery on ALL fridge freezers, even American-style ones. We have fridges starting at just £139 with free local drop-off and installation from only £25. Check out the latest energy-efficient models at our Monks Cross store or on our website. Herb heroes It is no secret that a large proportion of our primary foods are entirely pollinated by bees. These busy little helpers have been providing us with plenty of fruits, herbs and vegetables for millions of years. However, if there is one thing we know by now, it's that honey and bumble bee populations are declining rapidly. Whilst we may not be able to singlehandedly prevent this from happening, there are little things we can do when it comes to encouraging bees to flourish in outdoor spaces, including growing bee-friendly plants. According to scientific research, gardens are essential sources of nectar and on average, 85% of nectar in cities is produced in gardens. Herbs are particularly amazing for bees and they’re great for when you want to level up your culinary skills too. Whilst there are plenty of herb plants out there that are easy to maintain, here are three beefriendly herbs we think you should try growing

this summer: Wild marjoram Similar to oregano, wild marjoram is a delicious herb that is great in pasta dishes, on pizza and in greek-style salads. It blooms continuously throughout summer and those early autumn months. The herbs' characteristic pink flowers are especially loved by all kinds of pollinating insects too! Lemon balm A herb with the best kind of zest, lemon balm, also known as ‘bee balm’, is a solid favourite. It grows well in most soils, including dry and hot conditions and makes an excellent addition to a citrusy cheesecake or a refreshing summer sorbet. Chives These onionflavoured leaves are so versatile and they’re pretty easy to grow too. For this herb to attract bees, the chives need to flower first. When it comes to cooking, this tasty plant is great on omelettes and potato salads or for flavouring soups.

A bloomin’ lovely idea Bouquets are a lovely way to brighten up a room and add an air of sophistication to your home. Made all the more special when they’ve come from your very own garden, creating and arranging a bouquet can be a satisfying activity- and one that doesn’t have to be tasking either! But where to start? We asked the talented florists at Dutch Nurseries for their top tips on how to best enjoy the bounty of your blooms this summer: Prepare your stems by stripping all the foliage that will be under water level. Foliage below the water line aids bacteria growth and shortens vase life. Always cut your stems at an angle - this ensures a larger surface area of the stem to maximise water absorption. Always use a clean vase that has been washed in soap and water. If not cleaned properly between uses, any residual bacteria will shorten vase life. Replenish water daily- this is key to prolonging the life of your blooms. Also where you can, use flower food sachets as the sugary formula will feed your blooms. Keep your designs out of direct sunlight, heat or drafts. Extra heat will

rot the stems, producing more bacteria and shortening vase life significantly. Create a tape grid or use chicken wire at the neck of your vase. This will help space your blooms giving your arrangements structure. Layer the elements of your design strategically to create interest, start with your greenery to create a base shape, adding in your focal blooms then the minor elements to fill negative spaces. YOUR HOME & GARDEN

EXPERT

If asked to choose between growing a sour or sweet cherry I’d always go for the former. It’s not maverick taste buds that drive this preference but the practicalities of cultivation. Producing a worthwhile crop of sweet cherries in a garden is difficult. Free-standing, sweet cherries often grow vigorously making tall trees that are difficult to pick. Fan training against a wall or fence is a better option but growth can still be unruly and hard to contain. Whether grown as a tree or fan, netting is essential if most of the crop isn’t to be taken by birds. And, even if birds can be fended off, there are other problems. Sweet cherry blossom is prone to spring frost damage while blackfly aphis often disfigures and stunts new growth. To top it all, any fruit that does survive often splits as it ripens. Sour cherries aren’t immune to some of these problems but, on the whole, are much easier to grow and far more likely to provide a worthwhile harvest. Fresh sour cherries seldom feature in shops so, in case you’ve never encountered them, a sour or ‘acid’ cherry is one generally considered

too astringent to eat uncooked. In the UK the variety of sour cherry grown is nearly always Morello. Compared to most sweet cherries this is a far more compact and easily managed tree. It lends itself to fan-training and, unlike a sweet cherry, will grow and fruit well in situations where there’s not much sunshine. What’s more, while the cherries may be sour they turn a glossy and tempting deep burgundy, almost black, colour when fully ripe. In the York area, this is usually early August. I’ve several Morello cherries. These are trained in a rough fan shape using a basic post and wire framework in front of solid fences. This setup means the fruit can be protected against bird theft by draping old net curtains over the trees secured to the wires by clothes pegs. Standard garden netting could also be used for protection but in my experience, probably because it makes the ripening cherries more visible, this just incites birds to greater efforts at plunder. Although most Morello trees are fan trained, its compact habit means it is about the only cherry suitable for

container growing. It is also self-fertile, that is it doesn’t need a pollinating ‘friend’ of a different cherry variety to set fruit. Pruning, which should be carried out in summer as with all stone fruit, is relatively straightforward. Further, and sometimes contradictory advice is available online, but the key point to remember is that fruition often occurs on short young shoots produced the previous summer. On my established fantrained trees this means pruning, which I carry out after picking, mainly entails cutting back old shoots that have fruited leaving the younger ones to carry cherries next season. As well as being the easiest cherry to grow, the Morello has multiple culinary uses. It retains flavour better than sweet cherries when cooked for dessert

Tony Chalcraft and makes the best of all cherry jams. It can also be used for savoury purposes or even to make a liqueur (traditionally, kirsch was distilled from Morello cherries). And, of course, there’s a cherry pie or, better still as far as I’m concerned, Morello cherry clafoutis.

New support centre opening this autumn! In a matter of months, York Against Cancer’s brand-new support centre is due to open. Situated at the York Community Stadium in Huntington, the Leveson Centre will offer a wide range of holistic support services to complement clinical cancer treatments provided at York Hospital and help patients from across North and East Yorkshire navigate their way through their cancer diagnosis and recovery. The Leveson Centre has thoughtfully been named after one of the charity's founders, Professor Steve Leveson, a retired Consultant Surgeon, who, with two colleagues started York Against Cancer 35 years ago. Together with his wife, Pat, Leveson has supported the charity ever since. Renowned for his genuine compassion and skills as a surgeon, researcher and educator, Leveson has touched the lives of thousands of people across North and East Yorkshire. The new space will provide a friendly, welcoming environment for patients, friends and families to receive support or just to drop in for a cup of coffee and a chat. Visitors will be able to access information, advice and professional help as well as access a weekly and monthly timetable of activities. Services include benefits and financial advice, 'Look Good, Feel Better’ workshops, complementary therapy,

psychological support and counselling, will writing, and wellbeing activities. Exclusively funded through generous donations and legacies received by York Against Cancer, the charity is working closely in partnership with the York and Scarborough Hospital Trust to ensure they create a space that will positively impact the region’s level of cancer support services for years to come. To support the ongoing costs of the Centre as well as their other services, York Against Cancer are running a fundraising campaign alongside the launch of the new Leveson Centre. These services include the Mobile Chemotherapy Unit, launched in 2017; the minibus service which takes patients from York and the surrounding areas for treatment at St James' Hospital in Leeds; a respite home in Filey; as well as a world-leading cancer research programme at the University of York. Further updates on the Leveson Centre services, volunteering opportunities, and job vacancies will be announced over the next few months as the development progresses. To support the charity in continuing its fantastic services for years to come, you can donate to their Just Giving page. Visit https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/ YorkAgainstCancer.

Transport that you can trust In order to ease the daily pressures for cancer patients, York Against Cancer are providing a free minibus service for those in York that need to travel to St. James’s Hospital in Leeds for radiotherapy. As there is no direct public link to this hospital, this exclusive minibus service helps patients who might find it difficult to organise the journey themselves. The offer of a lift means reduced stress, no fuel or parking costs, and less reliance on family and friends. For those who must undergo

cancer treatment, the camaraderie on board the minibus is also of invaluable comfort. The staff at York Against Cancer have found that people travelling on the minibus often make friends, share experiences and support one another, and sometimes, these groups continue to meet once treatment has finished. Operating this fantastic service are two friendly, experienced drivers, getting patients to Leeds safely and back home later the same day.

Patient, Christine says, “Neil and Gary were so nice – they picked me up at the door and dropped me back at home after treatment. They made it a pleasure – absolutely excellent! I cannot fault it and I was so grateful. Thank you so much!” If you – or someone you know – need help getting to Leeds for

radiotherapy, give York Against Cancer a call. One of their friendly team will arrange everything for you and even consult with the booking office at St. James’s Hospital to reschedule appointments so they coincide with other passengers using the service.

Funding for the future

An interview with Ian Surgenor Why is York Against Cancer your charity of choice? I lost both my stepmother and grandfather to bowel cancer and these losses hit me hard - to the point where I felt I had to do something. York Against Cancer is a small, local charity that punches so far above its weight. The services they provide such as the respite holiday home, free minibus for radiotherapy patients, and the mobile chemotherapy unit bringing chemotherapy to people in rural areas – are just phenomenal. I think it’s so important we raise awareness of the work they do helping local people affected by cancer.

Hello. Who are you? My name is Ian Surgenor. What is your role at the charity? I’m a volunteer and fundraiser, mostly arranging live music concerts and shows. I organise York Rocks Against Cancer – which took place on Saturday 23rd July at York Barbican – featuring cast members of Emmerdale, Skylights, Sister Madly and many more local singers and bands. I’ve also organised York Swings Against Cancer, York Brass Against Cancer, York Musicals Against Cancer, and York Country Against Cancer. So far, these events have raised over £70,000 for the charity.

Research has always been at the heart of York Against Cancer’s work. The Jack Birch Unit (JBU) based in the Department of Biology at the University of York is the flagship research unit of York Against Cancer. The goal of the Jack Birch Unit is to make a difference to the lives of people by reducing the incidence of cancer or providing better treatments. York Against Cancer has made a five-year £1.3 million commitment to the JBU, helping Professor Jenny Southgate and her team in a range of projects that are expected to better understand the causes of bladder cancer and lead to improved treatments. The unit collaborates with cancer research scientists and clinicians across the world. Professor Southgate and her team publish their work in scientific journals and are often called on to share findings at international seminars and conferences. Funding this life-saving research is only made possible thanks to the incredible community of supporters and donors across York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire. Learn more about the research undertaken at the Jack Birch Unit here -www.york.ac.uk/biology/ jack-birch-unit.

How did you get involved with the charity? I met York Against Cancer CEO, Julie Russell, about ten years ago through a mutual friend and we instantly hit it off. She could see I had the energy and passion to organise fundraising events. We have a fantastic working relationship where I keep her updated on the planning and preparation but need minimal input from the office team.

Any other news? Myself and a group of local musicians and fundraisers - The YAC Collective - recently released a charity single called ‘You Lined Up All The Stars’ which was released on Friday 8th July 2022 and every penny made from the sales of CD/DVD goes to York Against Cancer. Nothing is more enjoyable than the thrill of a water park or pool, especially in the warmer summer months. As much as cruising down a lazy river in Costa del Sol or swimming in the Mediterranean sounds bob on, you don’t have to catch a flight to get your dose of waterpark fun. If you fancy a paddle about, some fun activities, or even just a chilled swim with the family, there are some great places on our doorstep here in Yorkshire for you to try this summer:

magic and funny props. The optional Wizard Wand Kits will go down a treat too, helping the young Witches and Wizards to practise their magic alongside the Wizard himself. This isn’t a spooky tour either, just pure magic and laughter for all of the family! The Wizard Walk of York takes place during the summer holidays and is ideally suited to children aged 5 –10 years. Tours run regularly throughout the week and private bookings are also available for groups, including schools and birthday parties. feral cat because she has had her left ear tipped, however BK is most definitely a domesticated cat who is just desperate to be loved. Bee's Knees would like a more rural home so she can continue to enjoy the thrills of the great outdoors. She's a super, little cat who really deserves a proper loving home, something she has never had. If you can offer this adorable duo a new home, please contact York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 or via www.cats.org/york.

Well, here she is...the Bee's Knees! This young lady was sneaking in through someone's cat flap, stealing their cat's dinner and generally making use of the facilities on offer! Bee’s Knees was very shy when she first arrived at the Centre, but these days it doesn't take much effort to get her little purr factory fired up and if you're lucky she will sneak out of her bed and prance around being a lovely cat! At some point, someone must have thought she was a

Brunswick Organic Nursery has been growing in Bishopthorpe for over 30 years. It was created to provide meaningful work opportunities on the land for people with learning difficulties. Workers tend the land and harvest the crops, but these days, we’re not just about the carrots and peas! Workers create and organise all kinds of things and this year, David had the idea to run a photography contest. David’s photography contest is open to everyone. David says, “I was trying to think of ways to raise money for Brunswick and I had the idea of running a photography competition. It’s going alright! I am very, very good at judging the photos. Different people from Brunswick help me to judge each time. You should enter because if you win you get a picture in a frame.”

It costs £3 to enter and the winners receive a piece of original art based on their winning photograph. They have some exceptional artists at Brunswick and the prize will be a true original. There are two more opportunities to win this year. The deadline to submit your pictures on the theme of ‘Plants’ is 31st August. The last contest of the year will run from 1st October, with a 30th November deadline, where the theme for that one will be ‘Buildings’. The winner of the last contest won an interpretation of their cat photograph by a Brunswick artist. David says, “I picked that one because that is a nice photo. Andrea did a good job!” Visit www.brunswickyork.org.uk to submit your entries.

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

Salsa in the city!

There are various forms of salsa dancing, but have you ever heard of Salsa Caleña? If you enjoy a good boogie, you want to learn something different and you’re looking for a way to stay fit, Sita Carr-Hill is your go-to gal. Having spent eight years in Columbia, Sita immersed herself in a world of salsa with plenty of expert dance training. Returning home to York as the pandemic hit, Sita has since been sharing her love of Salsa Caleña in the beautiful setting of Rowntree Park, come rain or shine. Salsa Caleña is an excellent form of exercise as it requires a lot of fast and endless footwork. This dance style works every muscle and increases joint and bone strength, but most importantly, ensures a lot of fun whilst doing so. Drawing on the unique nature of this class, Sita comments, “Salsa Caleña is a style of salsa still widely discovered due to the difficulties Colombians have faced in travelling. There are actually very few Salsa Caleña teachers in the UK!”

Asides from its physical health benefits, salsa along with other forms of dancing is great for the mind too. Sita continues, “Scientifically speaking dancing releases a cocktail of endorphins and hormones such as dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. Your body and mind will thank you, trust me!” In addition to salsa, another of Sita’s classes, ’Mama’s Got Moves’ was another idea born during the pandemic. This class focuses on mother and child bonding as well as connecting with other mums who may be feeling isolated. Classes cover many dance styles, including merengue, cha-chacha, pop and much more. Helping to spread happiness and inspire confidence, Sita’s unique classes are fun, friendly and inclusive for all. So, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned dancer, it's time to get your groove on! Visit www.mamasgotmoves.com for more information.

Find your new picture of health with ease Starting a wellness journey can seem daunting. Local Health Coach, Nikki Eve Wallis, shares three simple ways to help you feel healthier. The little things add up It takes 66 days on average to form a new habit. That’s why I always encourage my clients to take small, sustainable steps which they can do consistently, as they’re more likely to find something that’s a) doable for them and b) impacts their wellbeing. Remember, what works for someone else might not work for you. It may be upping your water, eating more veg, a daily walk, or going to bed earlier. Focus on one or two things and when you’ve nailed those, move on to something else. Soon you’ll have a host of new healthy practices that feel like second nature. Focus on the good One trap we can fall into is only looking at the negatives and what we perceive we can’t have in our new lifestyle. Switching the focus to what you can add means you’re

likely to enjoy each stage, and reach your goals more easily. Think about the recipes you can try or the new people you might meet at a fitness or cooking class. Look at the big picture Wellness isn’t just about what’s on our plate or the exercise we do. Our feelings of health and happiness are also tied to our job, relationships, social life, and more. Write down three areas where you’re satisfied and three where you feel you need a bit of finetuning. Celebrate where you feel great and make an action plan with small steps that you can maintain to help you find balance in the other areas. For more details on Health Coaching, email Nikki at hello@ nikkieve.com or visit www.nikkieve.com.

TRAVEL EXPERT

Kerry Lakey

IT’S A PARTY IN THE USA This month, Kerry Lakey from Savannah Travel, gives us the low down on the USA. Like many, we have been on our summer break and for myself and my colleague, Diane, the destination of choice was the USA. For myself, my destination was New York, a delayed trip from when the borders were closed and despite having been several times, I had never experienced summer in the city or the famous summer celebrations, such as Independence Day on July the 4th. I took a direct flight from Heathrow over to New York’s JFK airport, I was pleasantly surprised with security and check-in at both airports and our flights both ways ran to schedule. It had been nearly 10 years since my last visit and on that occasion, it was a very chilly February, this time was very

48

different. Temperatures were above 30 degrees each day and evenings remained warm. This was perfect for being out exploring. We took the subway from 42nd Street station and within an hour we were at the beach in Coney Island where we were able to spend a few hours relaxing with the cooling sea breeze. We also took a quick ride on the The Wonder Wheel with great views out to sea in one direction and the skyline of Manhattan to the other. We spent an entire morning exploring the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum and also a trip to my favourite viewpoint in the city, Top of the Rock - we timed our visit so we would be there just before the sun went down!

Diane’s trip was also to the East Coast but to Boston and the beaches and the mountains of Maine. Whilst I opted for a direct flight to the USA, Diane chose to fly Aer Lingus via Dublin, meaning customs were cleared during the short layover in Dublin. On arrival in Boston, baggage was collected without hassle and they were out of the airport in minutes. A journey with very little stress or queuing, and one I would consider for travelling to the USA in the future. To start discussing your trip across the pond whether, for a short break or a little longer exploring more, get in touch. We would love to speak to you!

A dedication to the Yorkie pud

Breast Cancer Now, the UK’s first extensive breast cancer charity, is back with its annual flagship Afternoon Tea fundraiser event in a bid to raise funds for world-class breast research and life-changing support. Every year, around 55,000 women and in rare cases, around 370 men in the UK have their lives turned upside down by a breast cancer diagnosis. So, whether it’s a picnic in the park or a little garden gathering, you’ll be helping to raise vital funds towards the world-class research taken out by Breast Cancer Now and of course, provide life-changing support and hope for the future…plus, who doesn’t love a bit of cake!? To join in, sign up for your fundraising kit at breastcancernow.org/cuppa.

August the 1st isn’t just your average start-of-the-month kind of day. Oh, no. It is no other than Yorkshire Day. Yes, a day to celebrate the wonderful county we call home and have a ‘reyt’ good time in doing so. What would Yorkshire Day be without a celebration of one of the most Yorkshire things going - the humble Yorkshire pud? It’s true, the Yorkie pud has been a matter of family pride for generations, especially in this county. But where did this delightful delicacy come from and who is the brainchild behind it? Well, believe it or not, the Yorkshire pudding was called a ‘dripping pudding’ back in the day. And by back in the day, we’re talking back in the 1700s. According to Yorkshire pudding legend, meat would traditionally have been roasted on a spit over an open fire with the juices dripping down onto the batter puddings below to add flavour to the puds. However, a decade later it was

cookery writer, Hannah Glasse, who gave Yorkshire puddings their name (cheers, Hannah!) and adapted the traditional recipe in her book ‘The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy’. This original recipe has since been cherished and can even be found on a wall mural, in the beautiful town of Malton. Indeed, Yorkshire puds have become a proper British staple and today, they are adored around the world. We’ve seen many pioneering pudding projects over the decades, including that time Yorkshire legend, Simon Thackeray decided to create a boat race where contestants would take to the waters in a giant Yorkshire pudding boat of their own (yes, this was a thing!). With the pure success and historic love of this food, the Yorkshire pudding is a true symbol of honour and one that we hope we’ll eat with pride for generations to come. Happy Yorkshire Day, one n’all!
