SCHOOOOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER!
Okay, so technically your little monsters have been off for a while now – but they’ve still got plenty of time before they make their way back to the classrooms for the next year up. Maybe your babies aren’t even that ‘baby’ anymore and they’re about to venture into ‘big school’ – or maybe they’re going one step further and ditching school completely for the big bad world. In which case, it’s time to get ready to wave goodbye and prepare for the big move to college… or work… or an apprenticeship… or university. And you can look forward to peace and quiet again. But hey, that’s not until September – and you’ve got a good four weeks or GINI

so before then. So let’s not wish the summer away. That being said, you might not read this until you return from holiday as, after all, it’s that time of the year. Maybe you’ve just done the depressing walk of misery off the plane that brought you back from sunny Spain to the rainy terminal of Manchester airport, and now you’re picking up the array of post that’s collected by your door. You spot a copy of Your Local Link magazine and think ‘yes, that’s going to cheer me up’ and sit down with it and a cup of black coffee (the milk’s gone off and you forgot to buy more). Now you’re reading this thinking ‘how on earth do they know that’s what MIM
I’m doing?!’ We’re clever like that, you see. On the flip side, you might be about to head off on your jollies now… in which case, we don’t want to talk to you and we’re no longer friends. Obviously that’s not true and we still love you, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a tiiiiiiny bit jealous. Not too jealous though. It can’t be denied that our beautiful city is just that: beautiful. It’s definitely not the worst place to come back to after sunning yourself up on the continent, nor is it the worst place to find yourself spending summer if a holiday is completely off the cards. Oh – before we leave you to enjoy the
sunshine and screaming children, we thought we’d share a good news story. Some of you may remember seeing advertisements for a pair of stolen longhaired chihuahuas, Dinky and Doris. Krystal and Claire B were particularly upset to see their owners so distraught – and a major online campaign commenced to return them to their rightful home. Since their original theft in March, it seemed less and less likely that they’d be found alive. Well guess what. They have. Just goes to show that you should never give up and that nothing’s impossible. On that note – see you in September!

ADOLESCENT MUSIC FESTIVAL.
20-21. TIME TRAVEL. We’ve ventured into the little village of Osbaldwick for this month’s Time Travel, and we realised it’s pretty old. Actually, it’s really old. Like it used to be called Osboldewic. So it even had the word ‘old’ in it. No more spoilers though – turn to pages 20-21 to find out more
Summer is all about being outdoors – and wherever you go you’ll find a local garden party or festival. But if you’re looking for a music festival that’s perfect for the whole family – and with more acts, stalls, bars and food than you can think of – then this is the one for you. Get it in your diary peeps: 10th August at York Racecourse.
COLUMNS 14-15. KRYSTAL’S GEMS. This month, Krystal’s reflecting on the turmoil she put her body through in her early twenties – and the pain she’s now experiencing trying to undo all that damage.
10-11. YORK LIFE. Life is full of ‘good intentions’. That good intention to cook in bulk to save money, or buy reduced groceries to avoid waste. But nothing ever really goes to plan, does it? What’s that word… procrastination? Rachel shares all on pages 10-1.
52. HOWARD. He’s spent lots of time with his mum recently, and discovered boxes full of childhood memories while cleaning his mum’s attic. You’ll never guess what he found.
18-19. WALKING WITH THE WANDERER. It’s time to step out to the East Riding of Yorkshire, because our Wanderer is taking you on a trek through Market Weighton and the two villages of Londesborough and Goodmanham.
26-35. YORK AGAINST CANCER. This incredible local organisation is our chosen charity for 2019, and we’re super proud of this. Check out this bumper edition full of the latest news and how to get involved.

AND LIFE IN GENERAL There’s nothing like a letter from the accountant in Acomb to spur me into action.
quite right. For my fridge is small and quite sleek on the outside, and a shrine to disorder on the inside.
Fortunately, one arrived this week. “Please let me have all the paperwork for your next tax calculation as soon as possible,” it said.
The main thing it represents is all kinds of good intentions that will remain eternally unfulfilled.
Well, that did it. It was just the prompt I needed to start excavating my fridge. I remember this syndrome very well from the bad old days of University Revision Week. This always brought on a sudden desire to clean the insides of cupboards, sort out clothes for the charity shop, and generally do all those domestic things that unaccountably start to seem both urgent and interesting. Happily, the accountant’s letter also coincided with one of those “August is a slow news month” reports claiming that your entire personality is embodied in your refrigerator (and I mean this symbolically, not as in “storing your annoying partner in the freezer”). I’m just as keen on a bit of selfabsorption as I am on procrastination, so this is an ideal moment to tackle said domestic appliance. Having done so, I can say quite categorically that the news report is
10
Let’s take the good intention to use leftovers. I don’t mean the ones you do actually use, like a cold roast joint. I mean the really important ones that you absolutely can’t bring yourself to throw away at the time: the small bit of pasta and pesto that will be ideal for lunch tomorrow. Or the remainder of a tin of tuna, which will be useful for a sandwich. The last centimetre of a bag of salad. All of which you then either don’t quite fancy, or don’t eat because you’re nowhere near your fridge and its second-hand pasta and pesto at lunchtime. The tuna, for its part, will be discovered in a state of decrepitude some significant time later, lurking in a dish with a saucer as a lid. It may take a degree in Archaeology to work out what it was. Then there’s the good intention only to eat fresh and healthy things, otherwise known as lugging a lot of root vegetables back from the market on a Saturday morning. Only nobody except

me likes root vegetables, and even I struggle to eat an entire cauliflower at one sitting. This leads to the further good intention to make soup, which in turn leads to a decaying cauliflower being discovered in the salad tray a month later. Then, of course, there’s the good intention to save money. Hence the collection of out-of-date Yellow Stickered items that can rest there for a while, making me feel all virtuous, before being thrown away. Good intentions, however, don’t account for the four half-finished bottles of tomato ketchup, three jars of opened mayonnaise and an entire bottle-bank’s
worth of ancient soy sauce, chutney, various types of mustard, gherkins, fish sauce (a teaspoon was used once, a year ago, in a failed attempt to follow a recipe), and Heinz Salad Cream (actually, it’s worth excavating a fridge to find that).

excitement following a trip to the greengrocer in Bishopthorpe Road. This intention is now represented by a large bag of frozen oranges. Somehow, the idea of standing over a hot pan of marmalade for hours in August is more than somewhat less than appealing. Then there’s the whole idea of “batch cooking”. This is the polite term for accidentally making too much chilli/ bolognese sauce/curry, bagging it up, and sticking it in the freezer. This would be fine, if you remembered to label it. It’s not so fine, though, when you promise your family spaghetti bolognese, and it turns out to be pasta with curry.
And I have no idea where a four-pack of low-fat yoghurts appeared from. As they expired three weeks ago, though, I can only imagine the bin will enjoy them. Sadly, the freezer is no better. However, it does have the advantage of the chaos being largely out of sight and therefore out of mind. Therein, though, lies the problem. Because a freezer makes it so easy for people like me to hold on to their hopeless good intentions more or less forever. There was, for instance, the good intention to make my own marmalade back in January in a fit of domestic
That, however, might be slightly more appealing than the endless small remainders of bread and stray peas that somehow slither underneath everything else. Happily, though, there’s always a solution to the Freezer Problem if you’re a really stupid person (i.e. me). And that’s to accidentally unplug the freezer, thereby rendering its entire contents unfrozen in one single night. Which leaves you with no alternative but to throw everything away. Which in turn leaves you with a nice empty freezer that you can store things in again, until they in turn are thrown away too. You know it makes sense.

Horoscopes 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG August can be a doldrummy month for most of the Zodiac, but Leo-born folk are the exception to the rule! Not only is there a lot happening on the social scene, the romantic vibe that raised its head in July becomes significantly stronger, and this could be a period of great joy and celebration, especially between the 19th and 22nd when someone who has traditionally said “no” to you now starts saying “yes” – or at least “maybe”! There’s more good news insofar as this vibrant energy crosses over into the working
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
You will be presented with an unusual business opportunity. Your initial reaction will be to say “no”, but maybe you should think it through, because in the mid and long term, it could be of serious benefit. Someone else’s problems dominate your emotions and thoughts during the middle of the month, and while you can be sympathetic, that’s about the strength of it.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
While all the indications are favourable, don’t rush in where angels fear to tread – and if someone is offering you something wonderful, make sure they can deliver before you say yes. This is equally applicable in the boardroom as well as the bedroom! The 7th or 8th brings you some exciting news, and there will probably be an important reunion on the 19th or thereabouts.

domain of your life, and there are new job opportunities on the horizon for those who are seeking them - and unexpected promotions (albeit with more responsibility) for those who’d almost given up hope of getting further up the ladder of success. Finances may well remain static at this time, but there is the birth of new hope and optimism when you view your mid- and long-term future prospects.
NOV SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV SAGITTARIUS 22ND - 21ST DEC
There is no fool like an old fool, and you’d be foolish indeed to try and win the stars when you haven’t even got to the moon! Apply this analogy to romantic and sexual situations, and you might see where I’m coming from! Other people don’t help by giving you mixed signals, so issue a challenge and insist that they be honest with you. If they’re not, cut your losses and walk away.
This should be a gentle and relatively uneventful month, which will suit most members of the sign. However it won’t go down well with those who are looking for a bit of fun and excitement, and who will act very impulsively during the third week if they’re not getting it. No harm done here, even though certain people will be baffled and exasperated by your attitude.

LEO
A STROLOGIST
Quite a bright money month with a bit of extra cash coming in from more than just a single source. Work patterns are more or less routine, and there is the threat of a bit of boredom creeping in before month’s end. Romantic outlook is encouraging, especially between the 15th and 24th – and providing you’re in a position to accept what’s on offer. 20TH JAN
AQUARIUS - 18TH FEB
Ladies of the sign will be enjoying greater social activity and probably making a couple of new influential friends, especially if one of those friends turns out to be “a friend in need”. Gentlemen should enjoy playing with new toys and finding the confidence to kick down a few obstacles that have stood in their way for much too long.
PISCES
19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
Someone from your past could cause a problem in your present, but only if you give them the opportunity – so don’t! Some anger and frustration between the 7th and 14th pushes you into making important decisions between the 15th and 22nd, which will be subtly influential in changing the direction of your life. Small ways at first, leading to bigger things later on.
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
In a reversal of fortune, a colleague, boss or workmate now starts messing you about – and you might have to take drastic action to nip a problem in the bud. Niggling health issues may also concern you at this time, especially if you’re under any kind of stress.
A half decent holiday (even if you’ve just had one!) could do you the world of good.
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
Work projects could be a bit soggy and boggy – and not for the first time this year, you’ll be looking for fresh inspiration. Finances reasonably okay on the condition you exercise more self-discipline. Expect quite a big bill mid-month! Quite a flat month socially, which just goes to show you need to get out more! Parents may have to take a strong position in connection with children and their discipline – or lack of it! Not a lot of support from partners, so you’re on your own! YORK LIFE
The Damage Limitation years Weigh yourself often, learn to cook and cut back on sugar. These are some of the activities a twenty-something should undertake in order to live a healthy life, according to a slightly dated New York Times article I read recently. Your late twenties, I assume, are reserved for undoing the damage of your early twenties. I’ve done plenty of Damage. Very fun, very worthwhile Damage but now it’s time to reign it in and pay my dues. Damage Limitation, it turns out, is a huge pain. Staying in on week nights - a pain! Not having pudding every day the worst pain! Working out regularly - a surprisingly worthy pain! Avoiding nicotine - a necessary pain. Staying hydrated - pain.
Money matters Financially, the Damage has been the biggest, and the hardest to resolve. The car on finance was a stinger, so was the overdraft, and the loan, and er, the credit card. Stingers all round. Practising the art of being fiscally responsible is a
muscle that must be worked every day - like a six pack if you’ve got one, which I don’t. Debt is awful and stressful, and my life has improved tenfold for eliminating most of it. Unlearning those habits is hard work though. Apparently buying new knickers instead of washing them is gross, wasteful and a fast track to an overdraft. I know this now, and I’m over it.
COLUMNIST
Krystal’s gems like this: Saturday, lots of beer and then a takeaway. Sunday, relax and try not to think about the Damage too much. Monday, eat a salad, go to the gym and drink two litres of water. Balance! I’ve achieved balance. I might write a book: Exactly What You Need To Do Today, To Undo Yesterday. Someone slap a trademark on that #bestseller.
Health and healing
Getting serious
Having a complete utter disinterest in calories and what happens when you eat too many of them, is a recipe that only The Damage Limitation years can tackle. I don’t want to talk about weight too much. I think we’re going in a positive direction by not zoning in on it all the time. But health-wise, like the physical amount of fat I have on my body, is not a healthy amount. Late nights and too much drinking on the weekends aren’t healthy either. I’m trying to undo said weekends, one week at a time. It goes
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not rushing to throw away my youth and dive head first into a world of consequence and responsibility. I’m just saying that when you take stuff seriously, you’re never stunned by the consequences after. If I know something might upset my mum, like say, setting off the fire alarm with my electronic cigarette at 12am, I would probably make a conscious effort to keep my window open in future. Hindsight is 20/20. I’ve stopped making promises I cannot keep, and I’m starting to deal with the fact that not every
decision I make is going to be a good one - but as long as I’m ready to face the music, it will all be fine.
Closing the circle I also went around amassing ‘friends’ through my late teens and early twenties. When it came to friends, my mum always stressed that I had ‘far too many’ and it genuinely seemed to bother her. I didn’t get it. I went around trying to keep in touch with as many people as was physically possible. Shock horror, it was exhausting and not-at-allfulfilling and as usual mum was right. You cannot have that many friends and give them the attention they deserve, or get the attention you need. It just doesn’t work. No one can be a good friend to 30 people. The beauty of the Damage Limitation years is that although nobody can say they are fun, nobody can say that they aren’t worthy. And while I stumble through, trying to be the best repentant version of myself that I can be, I hope I get the chance to do a little bit more Damage along the way, too.

JOIN THE CLUB EVERYBODY NEEDS GOOD NEIGHBOURS Being a neighbour doesn’t just mean living next door to someone – and you don’t have to live next door to someone to be neighbourly. York Neighbours know that, and their volunteers exercise their duties as good neighbours by supporting people over the age of 65. There are three ways that York Neighbours volunteers can help: by lending a hand with one-off practical jobs, such as changing a lightbulb; by making regular phone calls to people that don’t have any family or friends to talk to; or by going on both individual and group outings. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, then good news – York Neighbours are on the lookout for volunteers! It doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female – as long as you’re over 18 and are keen to help your ‘neighbours’ then you’re more than welcome. And don’t worry if you have a busy lifestyle – York Neighbours volunteers aren’t required to make a regular or minimum time commitment. So no matter what you offer, you’ll always be making a valuable contribution. n Fancy lending a hand? Visit www.yorkneighbours. org.uk to find out more, or call 891627.

MARKET WEIGHTON EXPLORER: PARKLAND, TWO VILLAGES AND A DISUSED RAILWAY
This is an easy circular walk of just under seven miles. Starting from Market Weighton it heads north into parkland to reach Londesborough. Circling the attractive village it then uses tracks to reach the ancient village of Goodmanham. The easy return to Market Weighton is on the Hudson Way, the trackbed of an old railway line.
Directions
1 From the centre of Market Weighton (the Griffin pub if alighting from the bus) walk back along the main street in the direction of York (York Road). Soon after passing the Market Weighton Business Centre on your left look out for a footpath on the right “Yorkshire Wolds Way”. Take this path across the field following the direction of the telegraph poles to a wooden footbridge. Cross and head along the right edge of the next field. Continue on the edge of several more fields, crossing more footbridges, to reach a main road. 2 Cross straight over the busy road and continue on the Wolds Way through a gate towards Towthorpe Grange. Go between cottages and farm buildings, and keep on the same direction to follow the path across a field. Cross a small bridge and continue, still in the same direction, to a gate ahead passing through a kissing gate to its right. Continue following the path as it bends round along the edge of the field with trees and bushes to the right. Eventually you emerge onto a tarmac lane where you turn left. 3 About 150 metres along the lane turn right off the road at the Wolds Way sign going through large iron gates. Follow the clear path across parkland to reach a path junction. To visit Londesborough village keep left (straight on) here. To shorten the walk and omit Londesborough turn right and follow the directions from point 5 (below).
18
Distance:
4 Keeping on go through a kissing gate and follow the gravel path uphill through trees to reach a tarmac lane. Go straight on (not sharp left) soon turning left at a crossroads by a seat. This takes you round the back of the village turning left at a T junction and then left again at Low Street to pass the church on your right. Eventually, having circled the village, you turn right to re-join the Wolds Way retracing your steps on the gravel path to the junction where you kept left earlier (point 3 above). 5 At the junction now go left (if not visiting Londesborough village turn right). At the bottom of the hill go through a gate then keep right at a path fork. The clear path then passes through a gate, over a bridge and through another gate to continue, still in the parkland, to go half-left uphill. It then joins a hard surface track which you take to the right until a sharp right bend where you go straight ahead following the Wolds Way sign to emerge onto the main road. 6 Cross the road into the picnic site opposite to follow the Wolds Way along the edge of a large field turning left at the corner. Keep on the signed Wolds Way ignoring footpaths off to left then right going under the disused railway at a bridge. Keep left as the track climbs to the road in Goodmanham village with the church on the right.
Getting there Market Weighton is 20 miles from York just off the A1079. There’s plenty of parking in the town. X46/X47 buses run regularly from York to Market Weighton. Alight at the Market Place (The Griffin).
Refreshments There are numerous options in Market Weighton. There’s a pub and a tea room The Fiddle Drill (closed Mon & Tue) in Goodmanham.
What to see As well as several fine buildings in the main street and the church Market Weighton has an unusual feature, a life size wooden statue of Giant Bradley, who at 7 feet 9 inches is claimed to be Britain’s tallest ever man. Londesborough is a pleasant estate village. The parkland with a lake and fine trees traversed going to and from the village once surrounded a historic house now demolished. Goodmanham is an ancient village with a historic church. It is said to be the site of a temple to Woden, overthrown in 627 when King Edwin of Northumbria converted to Christianity. The old railway track leading back to Market Weighton (the Hudson Way) passes St Helen’s Well and is a good spot to see a range of wildflowers, birds and butterflies.

8 It’s now a straightforward walk back to Market Weighton along the old trackbed. Pass St Helen’s Well then houses become visible as you near the town. Eventually the Hudson Way comes out into an open grassy area. Here keep to the left side, soon bordering a playground. There are several ways back to the main street but to avoid the road at the end of the grassy area there’s a passage way near the playground which leads to the church. You can circle this on either side to get back to the main street. If returning to York by bus, going right will take you to the Market Place bus stop.

7 To visit the pub turn right but otherwise go left here passing the Fiddle Drill tea room but soon turning right at the road junction still following the Wolds Way. The quiet road climbs then dips before turning left downhill. At the bottom of the hill take the track off the road onto the disused railway line (Hudson Way) going right signposted to Market Weighton.

YORK LIFE
iT meTravel Come with us as we journey backwards through the mists of time. No pushing at the back. THIS MONTH: OSBALDWICK Like many of York’s satellite villages, Osbaldwick is experiencing some changes. Tucked behind the mammoth B&Q store, and being encroached upon by both Tang Hall and the new Derwenthorpe development, it’s easy to see why Osbaldwick is often overlooked. So let’s look at it. Unlike the neighbouring housing estates now snuggling up, the original village of
Osbaldwick is old. Mentioned in the Domesday Book as Osboldewic, it can be assumed that the village was named for an Anglo-Saxon Earl of Northumbria, Osbold. So yeah… old. MAKES SENSE Also unlike many of the other smaller
20
villages of York that have been slowly enveloped by the growing city, it’s very clear to see why Osbaldwick exists where it does. What would have originally been a small collection of farmhouses working the fields on that side of the city walls, the village was well placed near to the main road out of York and right by a stream, Osbaldwick Beck. Prior to the Norman Conquest of 1066, Osbaldwick was under the direct control of the church. However, following the ‘regime change’ the position of Prebend of Osbaldwick was established, essentially creating a Lord of the Manor – a position that exists to this very day. SAY YOUR PRAYERS As the population of the village started to grow, a parish church was required. St Thomas’ was constructed at some point in the 12th century and features some standout elements. Some of the
church’s original windows are still in place and St Thomas’ is also the resting place of a special woman. Responsible for establishing the congregation upon which The Bar Convent is based, Mary Ward was a catholic nun, teacher and nurse from Yorkshire who lived during very dangerous times for Catholics. With Papal protection she toured Europe, opening schools for girls and free hospitals for the poor. After a lifetime of missionary work, she returned to Yorkshire and established a convent at Heworth where she died during the Siege of York in 1645. Worried that her body would be desecrated if buried within the city walls, her followers took her to quiet Osbaldwick where the church records state, “the vicar was honest enough to be bribed”. Nice. There she was buried and remains to this day, recently enjoying full recognition by the Holy See in 1909 and a mention by Pope
CHEERS The Derwent Arms, Osbaldwick’s local drinking establishment, dates back to 1823. Originally The Black Bull, the tavern boasted stables, accommodation, and even a wash house. It was the perfect place to stay for weary travellers heading into York. The name was later changed to pay homage to the Derwent Valley Light Railway that passed through the village – today still partially existing as the Sustrans National Cycle Route 66. Speaking of which… The Derwent Valley Light Railway was a short-lived passenger service that called at Osbaldwick between 1913 and 1926. Connecting to the main line by the Rowntree Factory, the track ran to Cliffe Common near Selby and became known as the Blackberry Line, as passengers would take daytrips out to
pick blackberries on the common. The line remained in operation until 1981, primarily to transport freight. However, a small section was reopened near to Osbaldwick in 1993 as part of the Yorkshire Museum of Farming at nearby Murton.

FILLING IN THE GAPS As York continues to grow and prosper, the gaps between the city and its smaller village cousins will continue to shrink. Already Osbaldwick is considered ‘a neighbourhood’ of York, rather than an independent township, and it’s easy to find yourself in the village without ever realising. However, by peeling back a few layers of history and pouring over some glorious old maps, it’s possible to rediscover some hidden delights.
DO YOU KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT YORK THAT WE DON’T? We’d love to hear about it!

CORN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT?
We can – because we’ve got an amazing prize for you. And we’re not lion. Geddit – we’re not lying? Sorry, we’ll stop. This year, York Maze have carved their 15 acre field of maize plants into the shape of a lion, mandrill, warthog and meerkat to celebrate 25 years of The Lion King. The animals cover an area the size of a whopping eight whole Wembley football pitches – making them over 100 times their real size. Of course, this isn’t just a creative tribute to the Disney classic that we all know and love – it’s still a huge maze that families can explore and get lost in. And for one lucky reader, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. That’s right, we’ve got a family ticket for York Maze to give away – so you too can have an a-maize-ing time. To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is answer this simple question: Which Disney film is York Maze celebrating? a) The Jungle Book b) Tarzan c) The Lion King Send your answer (along with your name, address and contact number) on a postcard marked ‘York Maze competition’ to the address on page 6, or via email to competitions@ yourlocallink.co.uk. The competition ends on 16th August, so don’t delay. Good luck!

SPORT
Local So another pre-season is nearly over and the real stuff begins soon enough. As always as a York City supporter I’m suckered into believing this will be a good campaign – hopefully ending with promotion clinched on the last day against Gloucester City and in front of a packed crowd at the new community stadium. However, this time it does feel a little different with Steve Watson building on the momentum gained at the end of last season with some astute signings. In my head, after 2018-19, I was thinking we probably needed a top keeper, strong leader at centre back, a creative midfielder and a prolific, proven goal-scorer. Not asking for much. And thinking that if Watson could get a couple of those from my wish list over the line then the Minstermen wouldn’t be too short of a good side. However, Watson looks from the outside to have delivered all of them over the course of about one week with new signings: Jameson, McNulty, Bond and Maguire, filling those aforementioned positions not to mention a few others for good measure. I have been hoodwinked before though, as have many fans of York City. I remember going to a pre-season game in 2011 when midfielder Michael Potts came on as substitute. The person sat next to me said: “this guy is absolutely class” to which I said: “have you seen him play before or something?” – before he
24
confirmed “no, just what I have read”. Whilst Potts wasn’t a bad player, I don’t think he will get a statue built after the 20-odd appearances he made before leaving for Guiseley. Also, if we used this type of logic, then Cherno Samba really would have been the world’s best player as predicted in Championship Manager 97-98. When in reality, he finished his career in the Norwegian Second Division. In the case of Steve McNulty – he’s a player much more familiar having faced City numerous times over the years. He’s also demonstrated the full fickle nature of fans, having previously received dogs abuse regarding his weight from the terraces of Bootham Crescent – to now being heralded as the saviour and the leader we have been looking for. As Andy Ruiz proved in boxing, looks can be deceiving, and hopefully big Steve is celebrating his sixth non-league promotion in April, 2020. August home games come thick and fast as City take on Farsley Celtic (Tuesday 6th), Brackley Town (Saturday 10th), Leamington (Saturday 17th) and Gateshead (Monday 26th). Of course the football feel good factor is coming hot off the back of the Women’s World Cup where Phil Neville’s lionesses fell just short at the Semi-Final stage, losing 2-1 to eventual winners, USA. In all honesty I didn’t see too many games
COLUMNIST
Dan Tait
of the tournament - but when I did, I found it refreshing to see players not rolling around, timewasting or feigning injury every two minutes like in the men’s game. Even more impressive after the England – Cameroon game, one I did see the full 90 of, where Cameroon seemed to take every decision against them out on the England team and threatened to not play the second half. That stance was outrageous, particularly as their moans were over VAR off-side decisions, which are either off-side or not, not opinion based. Someone has done a really good spoof of Celine Dion singing “Near, VAR, wherever you are” that I am sure won’t be a top download in Cameroon. Of course it wouldn’t have been England losing in a major tournament without missing a penalty as Captain Steph Houghton had one saved, which could have been a crucial equaliser and potential game changer. This was one I didn’t see,
but having seen someone on Twitter liken it to Diana Ross’ in 1994, I get the idea it wasn’t supremely taken. Good to see Rafa Benitez finally find a club that matches his ambitions having openly criticised Newcastle United for not backing him in the transfer market. After reliable sources said he may or not be signing a new contract on Tyneside, he has rocked up with a £10 million per season contract at Chinese club Dalian Yifang. Marko Arnautovi has done similar to West Ham, just six months after signing a new four year, £60,000 per week deal saying the club are stopping him achieving his dreams of winning big trophies in China. Given he grew up in Austria in the 1990s, I fail to see how he had dreams of winning the Chinese Football League Championship as no one had heard of it until three years ago when they started pumping loads of money into it. I would much rather he and Rafa were just honest and said “I want to get paid to the extent that if I dropped a £50 note it literally wouldn’t be worth bending down to pick it up”.

It’s Running Men! Hallelujah It’s Running Men! A unique York charity fun run marked its tenth birthday with a record entry when it took to the streets. R U Taking The P...?, the males-only 5K, attracted 526 men and boys to Bishopthorpe Road, beating its previous record by more than 100. Just under 400 took part in 2018. The runners, many of them fathers and sons, were taking part to increase awareness of prostate cancer, and to fundraise towards research and the work of York Against Cancer. Addressing them before the race, Professor Norman Maitland of the University of York thanked them for ten years of support for his research. He said that as he was retiring, future funds would assist the work of his close colleague Dr Fiona Frame at Hull University. He told them that he himself was diagnosed with prostate problems last year. “Nobody is immune,” he said. He praised the runners for raising more
than £150,000 in the decade since the race was founded by Brian Hughes of Knavesmire Harriers. Brian, who was inspired by the loss of a friend to prostate cancer, said he was overwhelmed by the response to this year’s race. “It’s wonderful,” he said. The race was won by Rob Ward, a member of Knavesmire Harriers and one of the directors of the weekly Knavesmire parkrun, who crossed the line in just under 18 minutes. He and a group from the York Beer Runners, a casual social running club, headed a field where many attended in fancy dress – including Simon Starkey, a regular participant who this year tackled the course in an inflatable triceratops costume. “I got it for £50 from eBay!” said Simon, who has previously run dressed as Chewbacca from Star Wars, and as a T-Rex. Phil Burton, Rich Parkinson and Lol Parkinson, nine, were dressed as

Romans for the race – which saw Lol beat Phil and Rich to the finish line. “It’s always a good fun run,” said Phil. Barry Dean took part dressed as Spiderman, cheered on by his daughter Polly, three. “I do a lot of charity runs, and I think this one is fantastic, raising awareness of prostate cancer,” he said. Other runners included Richard Romaniak and son Reuben, eight; York Against Cancer Chairman Ian Yeowart; charity founder Professor Steve Leveson with his dog, Rusty; and Jeremy Fothergill – who dressed as a squirrel for the occasion. The race was followed by a vibrant street party held by traders in Bishopthorpe Road.

We Like To Move It, Move It! Did you know York Against Cancer funds free exercise sessions to help people living with cancer return to fitness? Five free sessions of exercise are available through iCANmove, a scheme funded by York Against Cancer and operated by City of York Council and GLL – the company that runs the local authority’s gym services. Under the programme, people living with and beyond cancer are entitled to the five free sessions of exercise to help them return to fitness. After
these free sessions they can make a voluntary contribution – generally between £3 and £5. iCANmove takes place at Roko, Clifton Moor; Energise, Acomb; and in Rowntree Park – where Nordic walking is part of the programme. Instructors Jason Feavers, Jason Minto and Karen Heldt are qualified to prescribe exercise for people with health conditions, such as cancer, and Jason Feavers says the benefits are not just physical. “When people first come along, it’s

The University of York’s largest college has voted to make York Against Cancer its official charity partner for the next three years. Halifax College, which has 1,000 resident students and many more living off campus, chose to support YAC after inviting bids from local and national charities. Students will now fundraise for York Against Cancer by organising events, as well as offering practical volunteering help at charity functions – and the charity will raise awareness of its services among university students and staff. Mary Taylor Lewis of the Halifax College Students Association said YAC had been chosen because of the impact it made on the York

community through initiatives such as its respite homes and the transport it offered to get cancer patients to and from treatment. “We’re really looking forward to working with them,” she says. Cath Dickinson, Assistant Head of Halifax College, says: “We’re very excited and proud to support this wonderful local charity who are very good at finding practical ways to support people affected by cancer.” Julie Russell, YAC General Manager, said the partnership was exciting news for the charity. “The students’ fundraising will make a real difference to people in their university city and we’re really grateful that they want to help us,” she says.

THEY’VE GOT YOUR BACK! York Against Cancer has joined forces with a leading skin expert to spread an important sun safety message. The charity has launched its first I’ve Got Your Back summer campaign to encourage people to look after their nearest and dearest. YAC is calling on people to check each other’s backs and other areas that individuals can’t easily see for themselves, to tell them of any suspicious looking moles or marks, and to
encourage them to visit their GPs with any concerns. The drive has been backed by Dr Andy Muinonen-Martin, Consultant Dermatologist at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Consultant Dermatologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. “I think this is a fantastic idea from York Against Cancer,” says Dr Martin. “This is the time of year when the sun comes out and people dress more
lightly, and if you see any unusual moles or patches of skin it’s important to get them checked out. “Regularly checking your own skin and helping others with difficultto-see areas such as backs is key to catching cancer early, which we know saves lives. Once-monthly skin checks are ideal.” Julie Russell, YAC’s General Manager, said the charity had long emphasised sun safety. It had funded high-tech equipment to help Vale of York GPs detect potential skin cancers, and it conducted an annual campaign giving thousands of free sunhats to local school children. “We see the ‘I’ve Got Your Back’ campaign as a natural progression of the work that we do each year, and we hope our message encourages people to look after each other in the sun,” she says.

Interview with Heather Atkinson Hello. Who are you?
My name is Heather Atkinson.
And what do you do?
I’m Office Manager at York Against Cancer.
Tell us about your role at the charity.
I do the accounts and oversee the office, which is a busy place with a small, tight-knit workforce and a team of volunteers – who look after our activities from running our daily minibus taking patients to Leeds for radiotherapy, to running our gift and card shops. With the accounts it’s often really heart-warming to see how generous people are being to us and to read about why they have given us our support. When we have busy times, for example with our public events, I put my usual job to one side and we all work together to make the charity’s work a success.
What’s the most challenging part of the job? Keeping on top of everything when we get busy – but that’s the nature of the job and I love it.
And the best?
It’s seeing the difference that our work is making to the lives of people who may be going through some difficult times. Most of us have been touched by cancer at one time or another and it’s great to take some of the anxiety away.
How did you get involved with the charity?
Six and a half years ago I was working for Thomas Cook and was ready for a change after 13 years with them. I wanted to do something totally different so when I saw a job advertised with York Against Cancer it really appealed. I felt I would be doing something very worthwhile.
Would you recommend it as a place to work and volunteer?
Of course I would! Cancer is a serious matter but this is a very fun place to work and you come across some lovely people.
Anything interesting coming up?
It’s going to be amazing when we move from our current base in Huntington to purpose-built offices at the stadium in Monks Cross. It’s very exciting to think that we will be in such a vibrant area with lots of different groups of people that we can reach

out to and tell about our work. It will also give us the chance to present a smart and professional new face to the world, which can only increase public confidence in what we do.
Come On In, Carolyn!
York Against Cancer (YAC) relies on the help of a dedicated band of volunteers to ensure it can deliver its services. And many have personal reasons to give their time to the charity. One example is mum-of-two Carolyn Ashley, 48, whose stay at York Against Cancer’s luxury respite apartment in Whitby made her want to get involved. The charity has two coastal
properties, one in Whitby and the other in Filey, offering free short breaks to people living with cancer. Carolyn had been looking forward to spending a few days in Whitby after undergoing breast cancer treatment, and she loved her time there. “It was so relaxing. There was so much space – I sat on a bar stool in the lovely big kitchen and just told everybody else what to do,” she
jokes. “I went with my husband, my sons and two friends who had helped us out while I was having my treatment. We walked, we ate fish and chips and we pottered around. “One afternoon I was just sitting and looking through the guest book in the apartment and saw just how much it means to everybody. I thought how fabulous it was and said to myself, ‘I need to give something back’”. Back home, primary school teacher Carolyn contacted the charity’s office to enquire about opportunities, and was offered the chance of a shift at their shop in the foyer of York Hospital. “I enjoyed being in the shop, but the best bit is not so much about the shop – it’s about the people who come and talk to you while they’re visiting, going to and from their appointments, or waiting for the hospital bus to take them home,” she said. “Spending the time to talk to them is wonderful – I love that side of it.” Would you like to join Carolyn on the charity’s list of helpers? As well

Mike’s Story As told by Your Local Link writer, Claire Brooks. What should have been a simple CT scan back in the summer of 2017 came back with the shocking news that none of us expected: my father, Mike Pulpher, had advanced lung cancer. It had spread to multiple areas and could never be cured. The hospital meetings that followed continued to be peppered with bad news – they’d also found an aneurysm that couldn’t be treated because of the cancer, and my father’s life was expected to last just six more months. It was so unlikely that he’d meet his unborn grandchild that I took him in to a scan so he could at least see my baby moving. While no cure existed, treatment was available to help ease the pain and delay the side effects. A couple of these treatments included gamma knife for the tumours in his brain, and daily radiotherapy for the pain in his sternum. The problem was that my mother worked, and neither my father nor I could drive. This was the first time York Against
Cancer came to our rescue: their minibus service swung by to pick my dad up every day, and then came to the other side of York to get me so I could accompany him. Bearing in mind that the minibus was full of people heading for unpleasant treatment, the atmosphere was always upbeat. The drivers were responsible for this by being jovial, smiling, laughing and joking with everyone; and taking the time to get to know each passenger. Unbelievably, the treatment helped to shrink my father’s brain tumours right down, and reduce pain in his sternum. And that’s not all – York Against Cancer also provided my parents with their last ever break away together by sending them to a beautiful holiday home in Filey. They offer anyone being treated for cancer in York Hospital, and their loved ones, a three or four night break in either Filey or Whitby. It’s these things that really make a huge difference to people going through the daily struggles of what truly is an awful disease. My father met his grandson, Miles.
He laughed every day and went out for meals with us, even though, on paper, he should have been struggling to even breathe. Mike was in his 18th month of advanced lung cancer when he died on the 28th December 2018. And it was the aneurysm that ruptured and took his life too soon – not the cancer. His positive attitude, fantastic sense of humour, and selflessness – teamed with the incredible support from York Against Cancer – helped him fight the disease that couldn’t be fought. Terminal cancer isn’t a death sentence. It’s a test of strength, yes, but one that can be fought with friendship, kindness and love. And by helping my dad, York Against Cancer also helped my
mum and I. The work they do really is invaluable, and I will do everything I can to support them in an effort to give back what they gave me.
York Against Cancer’s free minibus takes people daily from York to Leeds for radiotherapy, and its respite properties offer free short breaks to cancer patients and their families. Find out more on the care and support section of their website at www.yorkagainstcancer. org.uk, or call 01904 764466.

Everything in life starts from nothing. A simple idea can hatch into an international retail chain, and a few notes scribbled on a piece of paper can turn into a number one hit single. York Against Cancer, the local charity that’s raised over £15 million since its launch in 1987, started in a very similar way. It’s thanks to three men that we have access to the wonderful work of York Against Cancer: Professor Steve Leveson, surgeon John Craven, and Dr Colin Garner. When surgeon Professor Leveson, whose background was in cancer research, decided to use his knowledge to help improve the lives of cancer patients in York, he joined forces with fellow surgeon John and university researcher Dr Garner. Public funding in the 80s wasn’t easy to get, much like today, so our trio worked hard to raise money – even approaching big names such as Dame Judi Dench, who agreed to be Patron, and previous Mayor of York Jack
Birch, who became the charity’s first Chairman. Eventually the first £60,000 target was hit and York Against Cancer was born. In 1989, the charity appointed its first specialist oncology nurse in a bid to improve chemotherapy care, and more nurses continued to be appointed following this. In 1997, after ten years of hard work and determination, a £100,000 public fundraising appeal saw the dream of a cancer care centre within York Hospital become reality. The Cancer Care Centre, run by funded staff, offers an array of support to cancer patients. It’s not just about providing information – the Centre also offers wellbeing, therapy and support initiatives such as hair loss help, art, and Look Good, Feel Better sessions. The year 2007 saw the launch of York Against Cancer’s fantastic minibus service, providing patients with
complimentary transport to and from their radiotherapy treatment at St James’ Hospital in Leeds. A replacement minibus was funded in 2014/5, providing longevity for the service. While all this was happening, wheelchairs were being bought for York Hospital car park; a family support worker, health care assistants and administrators were funded for the Cancer Care Centre; and the York Against Cancer shop opened inside York Hospital. For the charity’s silver anniversary, a luxury respite apartment in Whitby was introduced – offering free short breaks to cancer patients and their families. This initiative was so popular that in their 30th year, York Against Cancer opened a second respite property – this time in Filey.
Another incredible development for the charity was the launch of a £700,000 mobile chemotherapy unit, providing patients in north-east Yorkshire the opportunity to have treatment much closer to home. This innovative addition to York Against Cancer’s existing services was the first of its kind in Yorkshire. It’s fair to say that York Against Cancer have gone from strength to strength over the years – as they’ve helped to restore strength in those that need it the most. Here at Your Local Link, we’d like to thank everyone that plays a part in the running of the charity – whether staff or volunteers. The work that they undertake on a daily basis is both inspirational and life changing.

Here in the Your Local Link offices, we’ve also grabbed a slice of the fundraising action. With York Against Cancer as our chosen charity for 2019, we thought we’d kick off the summer with a Great British Bake Off event – and we certainly uncovered some culinary connoisseurs. And some culinary con artists… just look at the pizza cake for example. We definitely did not grab a ‘pizza’ that
action (sorry Charlotte!). And not only did we enjoy a delicious day full of sweet treats, we raised a tasty £107.62 for York Against Cancer. Win-win all round (except for Charlotte, who took home the ‘Epic Fail’ award).

WHAT’S THE POINT? While racking up points would be a good thing if you were playing a game of Tetris, collecting points on your driving licence is far from it. So, to help keep yours clean, we’ve put together the full 12 offences that carry points – and how many. Don’t forget that clocking up 12 or more points within three years can land you with a driving ban of up to six months – or more. Of course, safe driving is imperative regardless, so always take care on the roads.
1. Failing to stop after an accident or failing to report an accident – 5 to 10 points 2. Careless and inconsiderate driving – 3 to 9 points 3. Driving without insurance – 6 to 8 points 4. Using a hand held mobile phone when driving – 6 points 5. Failing to identify the driver of a vehicle – 6 points 6. Driving when disqualified – 6 points 7. Speeding – 3 to 6 points or 3 points fixed penalty
8. Driving after refusal or revocation of licence on medical grounds – 3 to 6 points 9. Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence – 3 to 6 points 10. Failure to have proper control of the vehicle or full view of the road and traffic ahead – 3 points 11. Using a vehicle in a dangerous condition – 3 points in each case 12. Traffic light offences – 3 points Tim Alcock, from www.leasevan.co.uk, says: “Safety should be every vehicle owner’s priority when driving. Motorists should be acutely aware that breaking the law while behind the wheel doesn’t just mean paying a fine and forgetting about it. “It will land them with penalty points on their licence, which could ultimately lead to a ban from driving and potentially affect your job.” So remember to stay calm and collected when driving – but enjoy the ride, too.
USB DESKTOP LED CLOCK FAN - £14.99 from www. thegiftandgadgetstore.com Okay, so there is absolutely no part of that product title that doesn’t scream ‘completely necessary office gadget’. Firstly, if you’ve got a gizmo on your desk that isn’t USB powered, then who really are you? No colleague of ours, that’s for sure. Secondly, if you don’t have a clock in your peripheral vision everywhere you go, then you’re also failing at life. Of course, said clock never gets looked at because our computer screens and phones are where we default our gaze to when pondering the time. But we all must have that opportunity to do the unnecessary maths of working out what hour we’re actually on, following the clocks going forward or back, seeing as we can’t figure out how/be bothered to change it. Obviously if it’s not LED then it’s not going on your desk. If it’s not some intense technology that’s been abbreviated to three letters then it’s just not up to scratch. Hence why it also has to be USB powered. Finally, it’s August. It’s hot. Most of us are in offices, watching the golden rays hit the solid glass windows, causing unbearable heat to ooze through and slowly cook us all like burgers on a barbie. Therefore having a fan in front of you is obviously genius – clock or no clock. So get your USB Desktop LED Clock Fan today and totally change your work life as you know it.

Rai l TRAIL THE SENSORY APPEAL
Poppleton Community Railway Nursery will be holding its Heritage Open Day on Saturday 7th September between 10am and 4pm. Not only will the Nursery railway museum be open to the public, but there will also be a model railway – and their restored diesel engine will run on the narrow gauge railway. You’ll be able to pick up a huge variety of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, herbs and alpines; plus you can explore the specialist cacti collection – where some will be for sale. You’ll also have the chance to treat yourself to a slice of homemade cake and a tea or coffee – and have a nosy through a selection of books, crafts and bric-a-brac. n Don’t forget – the Poppleton Community Railway Nursery is also open on the Saturday mornings 14th, 21st and 28th September from 10am-1pm for plant sales, and 10am-3.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year.
Plants can benefit us in many ways, especially when it comes to the senses and virtually every plant will stimulate one or more of these. From their multitude of colours, aromatic scents, tactile appeal, flavours or just their calming natural movement, we can immerse ourselves in a complete sensory experience and this can be beneficial to adults and children alike. Research has shown how gardening and contact with plants can help with both our physical and mental health – and creating a multi-sensory environment can cause a direct response both consciously and unconsciously. These results can include affecting our mood, relieving stress, evoking memories and alleviating boredom – all through our senses.
SIGHT Colour plays a big part when it comes to garden design, and also for visual stimulation. Bright colours like red, orange and yellow can help create a colourful, vibrant area; perfect for entertaining or for families to play in. In contrast, they can be used to make a calming, tranquil space to sit and relax by using colours such as blue, mauve and green. Colour can also be used in other ways when added to the garden – such as coloured gravels, stone and furniture. Even wooden structures, fences and sheds, which can be painted using coloured wood paint.
also some edible flowers – such as Nasturtiums, Hibiscus and Pansy? A veritable feast of tasty plants straight from your garden!
SOUND SMELL Scents given off by flowers have a purpose to attract insects for pollination, and some plants have aromatic foliage that deter insects from eating them. However, the more pleasant aromas can be enjoyed by us too. Plants such as lavender, rosemary, mint and scented-leaf geraniums give off beautiful scents on warm days. Touch When choosing your plants, try and get a good mixture of textures too. Foliage varies between different plants and can be anything from smooth, such as the soft, silky leaves of Lamb’s Ear (Stachys byzantine); to the rough, peeling bark of paper birch (Betula papyrifera).
TASTE There are many options when it comes to edible plants, and the obvious choices would be fruit bushes and trees, vegetables, fresh salad leaves, and culinary herbs. Did you know there are

There are many pleasant sounds that we can hear in the garden, such as the gentle rustling of leaves in a breeze, the buzzing of bees collecting pollen from blooming flowers, or the calming sound of trickling water from a garden pond or water feature. Some plants to consider for ‘sound’ would be ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Stipa and Cortaderia (Pampas Grass), that can all make lovely rustling sounds when stirred by a breeze. So whether you want to create a stimulating garden or a relaxing space, getting outside and gardening can provide exercise; create a sense of achievement; and contribute to a happier and healthier lifestyle.

RASPBERRY PRUNING
– Summer or Winter? berries to ground level. These ‘fruited’ canes are spent and will not carry quality berries next cropping season. Leaving them just clutters the row and risks the spread of disease.
Raspberries are one of the easiest berries to grow in the garden, but often one of the most maltreated. It’s not that they ask a lot. Apart from occasional weeding and a good dousing of water when dry, they don’t require much attention. Some support to keep the rather spindly plants (canes) upright is helpful. Pests, diseases and mineral deficiencies can occur but aren’t too damaging, unless the canes have been in the ground a long time. Birds may like to share a few berries, but raspberries aren’t a favourite fruit so the bother of netting isn’t usually required. The only real necessity if you want plentiful fruit is annual pruning. This is often forgotten and is the reason raspberries can become straggly and unfruitful. In all but one respect pruning is drastically straightforward. There’s none of that fussy faffing as with some other fruits. Simply cut down all old canes that have produced
The slight complication, and the issue that sometimes causes confusion, is that there are two types of raspberry with different cropping seasons and, consequently, different pruning needs and times. Most raspberries fruit in summer. These are the traditional types (technically ‘floricane’), growing new canes alongside the cropping ones that’ll produce berries the following year. The others are the autumn croppers. These don’t have old and new canes growing together – instead, the fruit is borne on canes all made in the same season (technically ‘primocane’). Telling these two apart shouldn’t normally be difficult. If you planted the canes you’ll hopefully know the variety and season! However, if you’ve ‘inherited’ unpruned and neglected raspberries, for example on an old allotment, it can be hard to tell which is which. In these circumstances, rather than rushing in with the loppers, it’s best to leave the plants for a year to see when they fruit. Those that bear berries before the end of July will almost certainly be summer fruiters, whereas those that crop later will most probably be autumn types. Summer fruiting raspberries should be
EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft
pruned as soon as the last berries have been picked. This will usually be from early August. It is only the fruited canes that need to be removed, not the new ones that have grown since spring. Fruited canes are easy to distinguish as they’ll have berry plugs at the tops and a brown and hard ‘woody’ stem near the ground. The new canes, in contrast, will be mostly green at the base, suppler and with no trace of picked fruit on their tops. These must be left to crop otherwise there’ll be no crop next summer! Only new canes that are very crowded or damaged, or are unruly and growing out of line, should be removed. For autumn fruiting raspberries, which only begin cropping from August onwards, the usual pruning time is February. The process is different: distinguishing between fruited and un-fruited canes is unnecessary. Autumn fruiters bear berries on first year growth. That is, the canes grow and crop all in one season. As all the canes will have fruited and new ones will appear next spring, everything can be safely cut down – simply chop them all off at ground level. This may seem brutal and can be daunting the first time you do it but rest assured, by late summer new canes will have been thrown up a metre or more tall.

G O T A GA R D E N I N G QUESTION?
Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266.
WE HAVE A RABBIT PROBLEM IN OUR GARDEN! COULD YOU PLEASE RECOMMEND SOME PLANTS THAT ARE NOT AFFECTED BY RABBITS? It’s probably true to say that rabbits are the most serious source of plant damage and loss in the garden, especially in country areas. Rabbits can eat their way through
a bed or border faster than any slug or snail. Here are some perennials that rabbits don’t usually seem interested in: • Agapanthus, which flowers in late summer and early autumn with either blue or white flowers. • Alchemilla Mollis is an adaptable, reliable plant that has mounds of downy, scalloped and lobed grey-green leaves, topped with yellowish green flowers in summer. It will selfseed around your garden. • Asters will flower from late summer into autumn in a variety of colours. • Astilbe, also known as ostrich plume, has arching sprays of red, pink or white flowers in summer and autumn. Young leaves are usually pink in colour. • Bergenia has a low mound of leathery, evergreen leaves and produces pink or white flowers in early spring – and is excellent for ground cover. •Hellebores – some evergreen and some semi-evergreen, bear nodding, saucer-

shaped flowers in a range of colours from late winter to spring. • Daffodils, most forms, will not be touched by rabbits. They are best planted in clusters. • Paeonies are old fashioned but reliable, and make a wonderful cottage garden feel in early summer. • Trollius is an early perennial that forms loose clumps of lemon, yellow or orange flowers in spring, and prefers heavy soils. Other perennials that you could use to rabbit proof your garden are aconitum, anemone, aquilegia, convallaria, crocosmia, kniphofia, pulmonaria or sedum.
MY HYDRANGEA HAS A WHITE COTTON-LOOKING SUBSTANCE ON ITS STEMS, AND THE UNDERSIDE OF ITS LEAVES. COULD YOU HELP TO EXPLAIN TO WHAT IT IS PLEASE? This is hydrangea scale. This pest is most visible during late spring and early summer when the female deposits eggs amongst a mass of white waxy fibres on the stems and foliage of host plants.
BROWN NURSERIES
Chris Brown
Hydrangea is the most frequently attacked plant, however this scale insect also occurs on prunus and acers. The egg masses are oval in shape and up to 5-6mm long. The mature scale is brownish-yellow in colour, but drops off when the insect dies, leaving the egg mass as the most obvious sign of infestation. Eggs hatch in mid-summer and the flat, oval, pale yellow scale nymphs live on the underside of leaves next to leaf veins during the rest of the summer. They move onto the bark in the autumn and overwinter as immature nymphs. They are a sap feeding insect that has one generation a year. Heavy infestations reduce the plant’s vigour and result in shoots dying back. Spray with a systemic chemical containing deltamethrin or insecticidal soap in midsummer. Hope this helps.

YOUR FAMILY
The Painting
I’ve been spending more time with my mum recently. Since she retired we hang out more, and I’ve been making regular trips down to Doncaster to see her. We’re like mates, now; mates who have a shared interest in nice restaurants and wandering around English Heritage sites (she’s a member – I have to pay). It’s been nice, and I feel like I’m finally getting to know her. She’s actually quite a laugh, and we playfully bicker about politics, the way I parent, the way I dress (“like a toddler, Howard!”), and the fact that I want to start charging her technical support: conversations between us don’t start with, “Hello love. How are you?” but rather, “Right, this phone. When I swipe up, it goes wrong…”
JOBS FOR THE BOY But regardless of the fun as I’ve had with my mum, and all the great food we’ve noshed, there’s always a job for me to do when returning home. Last weekend it was to venture into the attic to clear out some space and fix a broken light. The task itself was relatively easy. Unlike the attic I’d possessed in my own house these past few years, my mum’s wasn’t filled with mould and ‘dead things’. Instead I found several neatly ordered and stacked boxes, several of them marked ‘Howard’.
52
“There,” she said, poking her head above the trapdoor. “That stuff. I want all that stuff shifted.” “My stuff?” I asked. “Yes. All that crap.” And so began a rummage through my childhood. For it seems, unbeknownst to the rest of the family, my late father was one hell of a hoarder. He had kept everything. All the toys and old books that I had wanted to throw away, he had boxed up and stored in the attic. I found broken He-Man action figures from 1984, broken Thundercats action figures from 1988, and broken Ghostbusters 2 action figures from 1990. Several boxes were dedicated entirely to my long-lived, and horrendously expensive interest in The Games Workshop. Jesus, those guys know how to scam nerds.
THE PATH BY THE POND I could write several columns about what exactly I found in those boxes, and the insight into my childhood they offered, but not today. This month I want to focus on The Painting. While sifting through all the memorysoaked gems up there, I came across several wrapped pictures. Also saved by my dad, these once adorned the walls of the house before my parents – with
COLUMNIST the help of my older sister – developed taste. Hulking great portraits of strange woman washing clothes, tapestries picked up on their travels around the world, and one sickeningly ornate gold-framed landscape depicting a lane running by a pond. “Aw!” I called from above. “I remember this! The painting from the fireplace! This was on the wall from me being born until the mid-nineties, wasn’t it?” “Mmm,” replied mum. “Sling it.” Keeping it from the ‘to sling’ pile, I looked at the oil painting I’d not seen in over 20 years. It was painfully familiar, like seeing an old friend after years apart. It had hung above the mantelpiece in the living room for the entirety of my childhood and I remembered how I’d stare up at it and image where that path led. I climbed out of the attic, bringing it and a pretty pristine Stay Puft Marshmallow Man toy I’m thinking about putting on eBay.
OH THE IRONY I asked if I could keep it, to put in my new flat. The excuse I gave was one of

millennial irony, saying an old and garish thing like that will ‘look cool’ amongst all my smart tech and plain white walls. “A conversation piece,” I explained. “For when I have sexy ladies round.” (I have even less of a filter around my mum). The truth is, I just wanted it. It was something from my past, from the house in which I grew up, that I wanted to inherit. I don’t have ‘old things’, like photos of family from decades past, or furniture passed down from generation to generation, because I’m not really a fan of owning stuff. But this painting, which is as familiar and comforting to me as those old photos might be to you, I wanted. So there it now hangs, behind my desk, above an intentionally colour-matching plant. Skype me and you’ll see it. However… one thing the attic clearout brought to mind was that my mum isn’t going to be around forever. I’m glad I’m spending more time with her, but I wondered if the next time I was up clearing out her attic would be because she’d passed away. Then I thought: awesome, the job is half done. So I’m quids in.

Bright Beginnings Day Nursery in Rawcliffe Drive have celebrated winning several awards and accreditation since they opened in 1998 – such as the Millie’s Mark Award for outstanding first aid provision – and they’re celebrating again as they’ve just been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. The nursery, run by owner Christine Henderson, offers care for up to 33 children aged between 15 months and five years. “We have been overwhelmed by the
support of our parents and children and we are all absolutely ecstatic,” says Christine. “We have always recognised how hard our amazing team works and it is wonderful to have that officially acknowledged by Ofsted.” “We are very proud of our wonderful children, without whom this success would not be possible.” And the families of the children that attend Bright Beginnings have plenty of compliments to back up the grading – in fact, their glowing comments were well

received by the inspector. The report stated: “parental feedback is highly complimentary, and parents are immensely proud of their children’s progress, which they credit to the staff”.
HOSPITAL BUS IS A FIRST This brand new Park & Ride service travelling from Rawcliffe Bar to York Hospitalis set to make some excellent improvements for patients, visitors and staff. The service has been launched in a bid to ease the levels of congestion around York Hospital, and with each bus that runs every 20 minutes up to 75 cars are expected to be taken off the busy roads. Brian Golding, Director of Estates and Facilities at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, says: “We know that parking at York Hospital can be difficult

at peak times, especially for our own staff, many of whom struggle to find a parking space on site. “We have listened to this feedback and I am delighted that we are able to offer a partnership solution which will help reduce congestion around York Hospital by providing a viable alternative to parking at the hospital.” The York Hospital service will run from 6am-8.20pm, Monday to Friday and tickets will cost £3.20 for an adult return – with reduced fares for NHS staff holding valid ID.

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
MOLE REMOVAL Resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, talks us through the mole removal process, which is much simpler than you may have first thought.
Dr Saleena Zimri
For some people, moles are seen as nothing more than a beauty mark or a minor inconvenience, but unfortunately for others, they can be a self-esteem issue that knocks confidence levels down. Just like spots, moles are extremely common and vary in all shapes and sizes, but there is no shame in being embarrassed - or not embarrassedby these skin marks. Removing moles is easier, quicker and more successful than ever before. HOW IS MOLE REMOVAL DONE? Firstly, the mole and area around the mole is cleaned, then numbed with a local anaesthetic. This makes sure the area is clean for the procedure, so no unwanted germs are involved and the mole can be removed without any pain. The mole is then excised (cut out) using a scalpel. Once the mole is removed, the area is cauterised or stitched. The procedure is then finished and you are able to see the results.
EXPERT
HOW MUCH DOES THE PROCEDURE COST? The procedure is £250, and the results are permanent.
DOES MOLE REMOVAL TAKE LONG? The whole procedure is very quick and easy, from arriving for your treatment and leaving after it’s done, you shouldn’t be more than one hour. However it can vary depending on the size of the mole or if you are wanting more than one mole removed.
DOES IT HURT? Some people find the local anaesthetic injections can be uncomfortable, but once this is done the local anaesthetic prevents any pain being felt during the procedure. Your daily routines can be continued as normal. You may experience some soreness once the anaesthetic wears off, but this can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
Offering a wide variety of ZO and SkinCeuticals products, and with treatments ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practise and expertise with a friendly, caring service. EVENTS // FOOD & DRINK
Events Hotlist FLUORESCENT ADOLESCENT This summer festival is like no other.
One of the best things about the warm weather of summer (or rain – this is England after all) is heading down to a huge field for live music, street food and attractions. It’s festival season, and York’s Adolescent Festival on the 10th August is definitely one to put in your diary. As well as enjoying some of the best live talent that York has to offer on the Home Brew stage – such as Honours, The Receivers and Flat Cap Carnival – you’ll enjoy some of the best tribute bands in the UK. Love The Stone Roses? Total Stone Roses will be there. A Gallagher brothers fan? The Oasis Experience are going to hit the stage. Among them will be The Take That Experience, Viva La Coldplay, Queen the Bohemians, Bootleg Blondie, and ELO Again. Of course, you can also tickle those tastebuds with some of the finest street food in the north. To find out more, check the event out on Facebook @AdolescentYork.
Want to experience the best of the best events this month? Go to these.
RALLY AROUND GET… SET… GOGH!
Get outdoors for an action-packed day.
Scampston Hall is always a stunning place to visit if you’re looking for something to do. But visiting on the 31st August and 1st September means you’ll be treated to the Yorkshire Traction Engine Rally. This event for the whole family has more things to do than you can shake a stick at – such as steam engines and classic cars; tractor pulling and vintage motorcycles; and military vehicle displays. And it’s not just about the vehicles! You can also enjoy an old time and modern funfair; rural crafts marquee with demos; stage shows with live music – the list goes on. Want to find out more? Visit www.outdoorshows. co.uk or call 01751 200839 – and don’t forget to enter our competition to win a family ticket on page 23.
HIGH FLYERS
You won’t want to miss this one.
It’s touched visitors in Naples, Italy; Brussels, Belgium – and now Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is making magic in the stunning venue of St Mary’s in York for its UK premiere. This unique exhibition allows you to ‘step into the paintings’ through the art of modern technology. State-of-the-art projectors display a full 360 degree experience, while music and animations tantalise your senses. Whether you choose to sit or stand to watch the show, and whether you’re familiar with Van Gogh’s works or you just know him as the guy that chopped his ear off, this immersive show will impress, touch, and inspire you. Visit www.vangoghexpo.co.uk to find out more.
SHAKE IT UP
A-MAIZE-ING GRAINS
How sweet the sound.
It’s the time of year when nature kicks in and gives us some brilliant events – and York Maze is one of these. York Maze is open now until 2nd September – and it’s way more than just a maze. You’ll be treated to more than 20 – yes, TWENTY – rides, attractions and shows. And the names of these attractions absolutely give us for a run for our money. They’ve taken puns to a whole new level. You can enjoy the House of Even More Cornfusion; Utter Cornage; KerNoel’s House Party; Cobstacle Course; Volcorno Climb… the list goes on. And you won’t have to scrape kernels off the floor if you get peckish – there are two eateries for you to enjoy. The Kernel’s Kitchen offer everything from burgers to bacon sandwiches; and The Kernel’s Coffee Shop’s the place to go if you fancy a baguette or panini. Don’t forget – we’re giving away a family ticket to York Maze to one lucky reader! Be sure to enter it on page 23, and find out more about the attraction at www. yorkmaze.co.uk.

Here’s one for the big and little kids. We all know that the incredible Shakespeare Rose Theatre is back (yay!), offering four fantastic Shakespeare classics: The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and Henry V. But did you know that there’s also a special show available for your little ones called Billy Shakes: Wonderboy? Well there is – and it’s a brilliantly interactive and engaging show for children and grown-ups aged 4+. From live music to puppetry, and a wonderful bout of storytelling, Billy Shakes is an excellent way to introduce children to the world of Shakespeare.

Just wanted to let you know that even though this month's issue of The Link has only just come out, we have already had a fantastic response. We have had a large amount of enquiries from potential care staff and the quality so far has been really good. It has been a vast improvement on other local publications that I have previously used. Thank you so much for all your help and advice regarding the ads and for your very fast and efficient service. It has been really appreciated and I will definitely be placing ads with you in the future.
