Dear reader, You are currently looking at our biggest magazine since February 2020. We’ve compiled 80 glorious pages of York business, food, drink, events, gardens, homes, trades and a bumper charity feature with York Against Cancer. It was the perfect month for us to get back to where we started from as it’s, what we like to call in the office, a ‘five-weeker.’ The weeks add up in such a way that we get five of them between our print deadlines. Time was in abundance, possibilities endless. It was going to be easy. So easy. Of course, it never is. Whilst I felt very much ahead of schedule and raring to go, my poor partner came down with Covid - the sort that puts you in bed for a week - so it’s isolation time, and I’m writing this from my living room. I’ve also had a bereavement in the family this week. Jacky, my mum’s best friend and my most trusted

confidante, passed away. We’d just been on the phone last week, tentatively organising her funeral, making plans to get her back home and catching up on gossip; there was plenty more of that to come. We thought we had months, a tiny part of me hoped that we might get Christmas. Sadly, time doesn’t always have the same idea. With this in mind, I want you to run into August head first. See everything you can, do everything you can, tell your loved ones how important they are. I hope the mag inspires you, too. It could be volunteering for YAC, publishing a book like Kate Staves on P53, or making memories with your family at the next big event. It’s all yours for the taking. Krystal and The YLL Team x

STAMFORD BRIDGE, KEXBY AND THE RIVER DERWENT

The chief feature of this easy and almost totally flat route is the usually tranquil river Derwent, the banks of which are followed for about four of the seven miles. Route finding is simple, and the paths good. Cattle may be grazing in the riverside fields north of Kexby. The walk will be impassable when the river is in flood.

Directions 1 Starting at the entrance to the car park in Stamford Bridge, take the signed footpath on the right (on the left if exiting the car park) going over the flood bank and down towards the riverside as directed by a yellow arrow. Go through a gate and continue beside the river towards the viaduct. After the viaduct, keep right by the river to go over a ditch on a plank bridge on the edge of grassy meadows. After a metal gate, the path goes slightly left away from the river. The way ahead is then obvious, first on a stoned track then along the right edge of fields. Beyond this, the path goes between a hedge and a wooded area, crosses a stream on a concrete bridge, passes through conifer trees and then skirts a large garden on the right. Eventually, it ends at a kissing gate giving access to a road on the edge of Low Catton. 2 Turn right here to immediately go left around a bend into Low Catton (to visit the church take the path to the right at the bend). Pass the Gold Cup pub on the right and continue through the village. Keep on the quiet road until it turns sharply left. Here take the signed bridleway ahead on the right.

3 Follow this across an open field on a dirt track. Where the track goes sharp right, continue ahead with a hedge to the left. Keep going as the track becomes grassy, passing through further gates with a hedge and soon, a pig farm to the left. Keep ahead at a further gate, now with a hedge on the right, to reach the main road. 4 Go right on the pavement soon coming to the bridge over the river. Immediately over the bridge, look for a signed footpath on the right by the East Riding sign. Take this path, initially through tall vegetation, dropping down to the riverside. For the next three miles, the route follows the river on the right passing through a series of metal gates, some guarding bridges over ditches. About halfway along this stretch, there’s a stone bridge over a ditch in a hollow with a step over metal rails. When the houses of Stamford Bridge become visible across the river on the right the route passes through an area of rougher vegetation. Soon after this, there’s another stone-built bridge after which there’s a fenced path as the viaduct is again approached.

MEMORIALS

Getting there The recommended starting point is Stamford Bridge. The village is eight miles east of York on the A166. The main car park is immediately on the right after crossing the river bridge. The walk can also be started from Kexby where there’s limited parking off the main road to the right by the old bridge. Bus no. 10 from the railway station and city centre runs to Stamford Bridge every 30 minutes (less frequently on Sunday). Alight at the square. Buses 45, 46, X46 and X47 stop at Kexby Bridge.

Refreshments There are several options in the centre of Stamford Bridge including two pubs, a wine bar and a café. Low Catton has the Gold Cup pub.

What to see The normally sedate river and its wildlife is the main attraction. Birds spotted when the route was checked include kingfisher, reed warbler, egret and yellowhammer. Stamford Bridge is a busy village mainly famous for the eleventh-century battle. The now redundant railway viaduct is a popular walking and cycle route and affords good views over the river and surrounding countryside. Straggling Low Catton village has an ancient church in a secluded spot near the river.

THE RECYCLE PROJECT Meet the team turning waste into opportunity in York. An eco-conscious team in York have started a new not-for-profit business to reduce waste and enable the local community to do the same. The Recycle Project, which opened its first store at Yorvale Business Park in Layerthorpe last month, intercepts furniture and household items headed for landfill. The team then sell the items and run community workshops from the profit. The aim is to provide a safe, inclusive space to learn new skills and meet new friends whilst reducing waste along the way. The project started in 2020 during the pandemic, but has been a long time coming, explains CEO Bradley Mulhearn: “It started with the bike shop (Recycle York), we started recycling bikes ten years ago, and through that and being in contact with household waste sites, it progressed from there. We were looking to open a premise last year but with lockdown, we put it on hold. We have been collecting items and turning them around already, but we waited until June - until things opened up properly - to open these premises here. “We currently go to around 20

SHORT STORY Introducing York Wordsmiths… The local group formed over ten years ago through an evening class taught by Pat Borthwick but continued long after the lessons finished. Now the group meet for tea and cake, and more recently over Zoom, to set writing tasks and critique each others’ work. Each month we’ll be sharing a short story or poem by one of their writers.

The job comes with a flock of fifty sheep, but there are certain responsibilities. For a start, there’s a ten-month training package thrown into the deal. Chasing wayward sheep is definitely frowned on. They have to be mustered. And talking of sheep, they’re not the brightest of God’s animals. Only just having the edge on

headless chickens. I’ve learnt that with quick bursts of speed you can soon round them up and nudge them towards the pen. Play my cards right and I could be on herding duties in a few months. But there's always one. Only this morning I had to pursue a lamb that had broken away from the flock. And then a strange thing happened. For a moment time stood still. There I was, lying in the warmth of the farm kitchen, on my blanket next to the Aga. The family all seated round the table and a mouth-watering aroma of gravy. And mint sauce. Seconds later I’m back in the field and driving the flock through the gate. What’s that all about? The job does come with some perks. Two good meals a day and a bijou residence thrown in for good measure. A stylish clapboard kennel, that wouldn't look out of place in New England. A bit draughty but keeps out the rain. And you can keep an eye on the flock from a sheltered distance. There's none of that shepherds watching their flocks by night stuff these days. And no wolves either.

We get a steady stream of visitors to the farm, labourers and farmworkers. But, since Health and Safety got in on the act I've had to suppress the temptation to have a go at their ankles. Come August, it’s open season for cyclists. They represent a totally different challenge. First, it's crucial to remain out of sight. Then, position yourself in readiness to sprint at any second. As the hapless cyclist pedals past, you launch yourself out of the blocks. Timing is crucial at this stage. Bark too soon and he’ll accelerate away. Bark as you pull alongside and this has the effect of unsettling the cyclist. Placing your open jaws in the ideal position. For a judicious nip. Shame that stretching Lycra is nowhere near as satisfying as the sound of ripping trousers. But hang on a moment. Is that a rambler approaching the stile? I trot over and sit next to it, lulling her into a false sense of security. She places a foot on the step and hooks the other leg over. A plump bottom presents itself. I know I shouldn't. But old habits die hard.

This month, our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson, is happy with the new signings. It's been a busy month as preparations for the brand new season at the new stadium get underway this summer, with a host of new signings coming to the club. The most notable of those in that time is the welcome return of Clayton Donaldson. For me, he's a player who, I know I'm not alone in saying, was a proper favourite of mine during my time supporting the club. I know that many of the older fans will remember some of our true greats of this club, from the likes of John Byrne and the ultimate Keith Walwyn, but during these years that I have been going, he was certainly a player that excited you from the moment he joined the club. He was electrifying, with pace to burn and a real joy to watch, getting everyone off their seats and most importantly: he scored goals. Since he left the club, he's played for some great league clubs and scored goals everywhere he's been. To welcome him back where his career started is something that I think has excited a lot of fans. Of course, there are definitely some reservations about the signing as you look at his age. He

is 37 now, and I am sure he won't be that same player we all remember him as, but on the upside, it seems his fitness is in great condition and will be a powerful addition to the frontline. Alongside him, other recent signings Kurt Willoughby and Jason Gilchrist make for an exciting attack with no excuse for getting those much-needed goals we have lacked in recent times. As exciting as it is to have these signings and the chance of finally being able to go to the football again, I think it will certainly be strange to be going up to the LNER for the first time for many fans next season. It's important that the club gets off to a good start in this coming season, and with a rise in the price of tickets, I think some fans may have to think twice about games they get to in the coming season. There has been great support so far with the season tickets, but it feels that they may have missed a trick in offering various incentives for some who may not be able to afford the increased prices for the new season. In other City-related news, it was a great evening at Haxby Sports Bar with my predecessor Dan Tait and the rest of the Hospital Ball team putting on a fine night with former City player Richard Brodie. WHEELY GOOD NEWS You know those fun-looking e-scooters you've seen dotted across the city centre? We're getting to keep them for a while longer. That's because City of York Council has agreed to extend the e-scooter trial in York for a further six months as part of the Department for Transport’s (DfT) micro-mobility trial with TIER Mobility. This extension will provide extra time for all trial areas to reach expected capacity of e-scooters as restrictions continue to ease. In addition, the extended period will allow for the DfT to gather additional data to inform future legislation. Since the service went live in York, around 10,000 unique riders have made almost 40,000 trips around the city using a TIER e-scooter or e-bike, covering over 140,000 miles. The six-month extension of the trial is also accompanied by an expansion of the maximum number of e-scooters now permitted in the city, following the

successful take-up of the service. The maximum number has been raised from 700 to 1,000 to ensure growing demand for the service is met, covering more than 45 parking areas across York. Charity Special It’s been a difficult 18 months for everyone, and charities have been hit especially hard. This month we are catching up with the York-based charity York Against Cancer. The charity is well known in York and across North and East

Yorkshire for supporting local cancer patients and their families. The charity provides practical help to patients along with some ‘nice to have’ extras. The charity was born in 1987 and has since raised over £15 million for cancer

care, research and education. Throughout the pandemic they have not stopped; adapting services to fit with ever-changing government guidelines whilst helping as many local people as possible.

Being diagnosed with cancer at any time causes an enormous amount of stress for patients and loved ones and they will have a lot to deal with both emotionally and practically. Getting from York to Leeds for daily radiotherapy can feel like too much to organise and even with a group of friends and family to help, coordinating this can be a nightmare. York Against Cancer provide a minibus service that takes patients to Leeds - Monday to Friday - and they will pick patients up from their own doorstep. The YAC team have found that people travelling on the minibus make friends and share

experiences which leads to supporting one another. Often, these groups continue to meet after their treatments have finished. YAC’s new home at the LNER Community Stadium York Against Cancer has ambitious plans to expand, and relocating to a larger office space is just the beginning. Julie Russell, Charity Manager said: “It is a massive step forward that will put us in front of a brand-new audience and give us a springboard into the future. “We’ll have great visibility that we hope will bring us new customers, supporters, fundraisers and volunteers, and we’ll be able to get the word out that we are the go-to place for people to turn to when they most need help.” The York-based charity provides practical help and support for

patients and their families living with cancer in York and North Yorkshire. The support includes vital research and education to prevent and cure cancer in the future as well as funding services at the Cancer Care Centre at York Hospital, a minibus service to St. James’s Hospital and two seaside holiday homes in Whitby and Filey for patients and their families to take a break. The new office space at the LNER Community Stadium was the perfect fit for York Against Cancer – Yorkbased, community-focused and working alongside other charities and businesses with a shared ethos and focus on health and wellness.

The new on-site shop is open daily 10am – 4.30pm Tuesday to Saturday, located next to the entrance of the Better Leisure Centre, Kathryn Avenue, Huntington, York, YO32 9AF. The shop sells a range of designer cards for all occasions as well as quirky gifts and lifestyle accessories. The shop is managed by wonderful volunteers and 100% of profits are

re-invested back into York Against Cancer to fund lifesaving research, care and support for local people affected by cancer. The York Against Cancer retail store is now online at www. yorkagainstcancer.org.uk/shop.

Back to the start Everything in life starts from nothing. A simple idea can hatch into an international retail chain, and a few notes scribbled on a piece of paper can turn into a number one hit single. York Against Cancer, the local charity that’s raised over £15 million since its launch in 1987, started in a very similar way. It’s thanks to three men that we have access to the wonderful work of York Against Cancer: Professor Steve Leveson, surgeon John Craven, and Dr Colin Garner. When surgeon Professor Leveson, whose background was in cancer research, decided to use his knowledge to help improve the lives of cancer patients in York, he joined forces with fellow surgeon John and university researcher Dr Garner. Public funding in the 80s wasn’t easy to get, much like today, so our trio worked hard to raise money – even approaching big names such as Dame Judi Dench, who agreed to be Patron, and previous Mayor of York Jack Birch, who became the charity’s first Chairman. Eventually the first £60,000 target was hit and York Against Cancer was born.

In 1989, the charity appointed its first specialist oncology nurse in a bid to improve chemotherapy care, and more nurses continued to be appointed following this. In 1997, after ten years of hard work and determination, a £100,000 public fundraising appeal saw the dream of a cancer care centre within York Hospital become reality. The Cancer Care Centre, run by funded staff, offers an array of support to cancer patients. It’s not just about providing information – the Centre also offers wellbeing, therapy and support initiatives such as hair loss help, art, and Look Good, Feel Better sessions. The year 2007 saw the launch of York Against Cancer’s fantastic minibus service, providing patients with complimentary transport to and from their radiotherapy treatment at St James’ Hospital in Leeds. A replacement minibus was funded in 2014/5, providing longevity for the service. While all this was happening, wheelchairs were being bought for

York Hospital car park; a family support worker, health care assistants and administrators were funded for the Cancer Care Centre; and the York Against Cancer shop opened inside York Hospital. For the charity’s silver anniversary, a luxury respite apartment in Whitby was introduced – offering free short breaks to cancer patients and their families. This initiative was so popular that in their 30th year, York Against Cancer opened a second respite property – this time in Filey. Another incredible development for the charity was the launch of a £700,000 mobile chemotherapy unit,

providing patients in north-east Yorkshire the opportunity to have treatment much closer to home. This innovative addition to York Against Cancer’s existing services was the first of its kind in Yorkshire. It’s fair to say that York Against Cancer have gone from strength to strength over the years – as they’ve helped to restore strength in those that need it the most. INDUCTION COOKING – IS IT TIME TO CHANGE YOUR HOB? Many of you reading this will regularly cook on a gas hob at home or maybe an electric ceramic hob, each have their own idiosyncrasies, so let’s have a look at these vs the modern induction electric hob. To make it easy we can break the differences down into the three broad headings of cleanliness, safety and cost.

HYGIENE The cleanliness of a hob is down to two things, getting dirt out of all the nooks and crannies, and preventing spills from getting welded onto the surface of the hob in the first place. The worst-case scenario is gas, where you have not only indentations and welds on the surface of the hob itself but also multiple parts to the burner itself, all of this makes it very difficult to keep clean. In the case of the older style ceramic hobs, they are much easier to clean due to having a flat glass surface but if something you are cooking boils over it will stick to the glass due to the extreme heat. The difference with an induction hob here is that the glass remains cool so spills can be easily wiped up without fear of burning the cloth or your hand.

SAFETY In terms of the relative safety of these hobs, it’s obvious that given we know the glass remains cool with induction, it will also be much safer if touched accidentally or during a clean-up during cooking. The induction hob also has another trick up its sleeve though - it only starts cooking if the pan is present. Once the pan is removed (or if the hob is activated by accident) no heating will take place and it will turn itself off. Most also feature a child lock if you have an “inquisitive” youngster at home.

COST Finally onto the cost-effectiveness. If you've ever looked at the relative costs of these cooktops you will know that induction is a chunk more expensive, especially when compared with gas. Gas is also a firm favourite of chefs but on the flip side, the UK government are actively looking to phase out fossil fuels

and you also have professional chefs like Michel Roux Jnr changing over to induction. To understand the real lifetime cost of a hob, you need to also look at the running costs every time you use them and further, look at the efficiency of the products. The worst-case here is again gas where you end up heating up your room as much as your pan, with an induction hob you just heat the pan and this results in a pan of water boiling in roughly half the time a ceramic would

In an ideal world, your compost bin will be in a sunny spot on soil. If you want to put your compost bin on concrete, layer the bottom with paper and twigs.

Add the right ingredients

Most things go, from vegetable and fruit peelings to teabags, cereal boxes and eggshells. Avoid cooked food and any type of meat or fish.

Mix it up

You’re looking to have a mix of half greens and half browns in your compost bin. Greens include raw food waste and grass cuttings while browns include wood chips, twigs and newspaper.

Have a little patience

You won’t be seeing any compost for at least nine months, so now all you need to do is let nature take its course. You can keep on adding greens and browns to the top of the pile, though.

Once your compost has turned into a crumbly, dark material, resembling moist soil, it’s ready.

This mini suburban adventure is perfect for energetic little ones. Pass calm water, take on the dirt bike track and tackle a climbing boulder. This is a lovely route for kids that are using balance bikes. There will need to be careful roadside supervision while you travel from Rawcliffe Lake to Rawcliffe Park. Start at Rawcliffe Lake, which can be accessed from Oakdale Road. It’s a great fishing spot with plenty of ducks and geese pecking at your toes to be fed!

Head towards Rawcliffee Pavilion, then go down St. Mark’s Grove all the way to Shipton Road. You’ll get to Rawcliffe country park after a 20-minute walk. The country park has a climbing boulder and pump tracks. Look out for the routes shown with one dot - these are the beginner level tracks (there are two). At the end of the path, you’ll end up on Rawcliffe Ings and the River Ouse, head over to the grassy bank for a picnic before looping back round to Rawcliffe Lake.

Dreams in a jar A York mum is celebrating after publishing her first-ever children’s book last month called Dreams in a Jar. Kate Staves, who lives in Holgate, says the pandemic pushed her into making her dream a reality: “When the pandemic happened I decided I was going to make my dream of publishing a children's book a reality no matter what, it really put everything in perspective and gave me the push I needed to make it happen!” The book, Dreams in a Jar, is a picture book about a little girl who travels through the world of dreams, collecting trinkets and souvenirs to keep forever in a special jar under her bed. It’s beautifully illustrated by Karen Bunting. Kate, 33, enjoyed a career in mental health before starting her family. She can be spotted around York browsing bookshops with her two daughters and dining out as much as possible.

A mental health provider in York has moved all of its services for young people to a new site in Strensall. For the first time, all of The Retreat’s therapy and assessment services for children and young people will be provided in a dedicated site: The Retreat at Charles Court. We found out more in time for its opening... What is The Retreat? We are a mental health provider, passionate about supporting people of all ages to live well. We’ve been providing mental health services for over 200 years. We offer expert therapy, assessment and support, providing tailored care which is personalised, effective and evidence-based.

What services does The Retreat offer? If you are worried about a child or young person’s mental health or wellbeing, The Retreat at Charles Court can help. We provide a range of services for children and young people ages 2-17 years and their families or carers. We can help with: •Autism Assessments •Sensory Integration Assessments •Anxiety •Depression or low mood •Traumatic experiences •Relationship difficulties •Bereavement •Eating difficulties •Confidence or self-esteem issues •Stress •Panic attacks •Sleeping difficulties • Any issue related to wellbeing

The Retreat also provides mental health and neurodevelopmental services for adults (18+) from our sites on Heslington Road York, Manchester and through our online offering. Who will I see? Café 21 There's a new restaurant in town and you'll find it tucked away behind the designer clothes and sparkling makeup counters on the second floor of Fenwicks, Coppergate.

Your Local Link's editor, Krystal Starkey, headed down there to put Café 21's Sunday dinner offering to the test. Café 21 didn’t have an ideal start, opening for just two months in November 2020, before lockdown was imposed once again. But you wouldn’t know that walking in today. The immaculately presented team wear sleek grey waistcoats, smile warmly as we enter the café and know their stuff when it comes to the menu. There’s a gentle chatter as we head to our table, a group of women are enjoying a leisurely lunch over wine,

the staff milling about, and as I sit down on a millennial pink curved sofa, no less, I get to take in my surroundings. This is a professional job. Muted neutrals and flashes of wood blend with metallic tones, a bouquet of glass bulbs hang over our circular table, it's very Instagram-worthy. Once I’ve taken in the view, I’m presented with the Sunday menu. A fusion of traditional English and Italian inspired food give this Sunday menu a fresh feel. I opt for the Tuscan style Porchetta with Fennel and Apple Salad. This baby is cooked low and slow, at 75 degrees overnight. To serve, it's then blasted at 300 degrees to crisp up the fat. The apple and fennel salad provides a welcome acidity in place of the usual apple sauce while the juicy, herb stuffed pork sits neatly inside a

crisp, salty crackling. It's hearty and full of flavour - exactly what I want from my Sunday dinner. My guest goes for a traditional roast rump of beef. It arrives in pink, silky slices with a lashing of gravy for good measure. I try the beef, and it's as tender as it looks. As the sides start to arrive, I notice that each element has been made with more care and attention than I'm used to. The cauliflower cheese is broken down into small pieces to create a smooth consistency with a crisp top. A carrot and swede mash is drenched in chicken stock butter, while the greens come in the form of cabbage and peas. Crisp roasties and parsnips complete the generous offering. For dessert, I call on my second (pudding) stomach and go wholeheartedly for the whisky

marmalade sponge with vanilla custard. The waiter explains that the chef always likes to include a proper traditional pudding on the changing Sunday lunch menu. This dessert has haunted me for two days since eating it. The tangy marmalade soaked sponge with rich whisky undertones is surrounded by a creamy but light vanilla custard. It's the stuff of old English dreams.

The verdict

Contemporary, elegant and indulgent. Be sure to turn up hungry. The portions are generous, and the sides neverending. Each one so delicious, that you won't be able to stop eating. Café 21 is open from morning until early evening every day. Visit cafe21york.co.uk for more information.

Each month we sample some of the finest products that Yorkshire has to offer. This month we’ve travelled from the Howardian Hills to Bedale. The Castle Howard Gin £39.99 from www. castlehoward.co.uk. Castle Howard has teamed up with Sloemotion Distillery to create a classic gin flavoured with locally foraged botanicals. The juniper led, dry spirit features aromatic extracts of coriander, orange peel and cardamon with its sweet-sour note coming from crab apples on the estate and a citrus hit of Lemon Balm harvested from the formal gardens. “The ethos and values that inspired Sloemotion struck a chord with us here at Castle Howard,” says Nicholas Howard. “Joff Curtoys, Founder of Sloemotion Distillery (with a background in ecology and conservation) sits on our Conservation Advisory Board, and their work using botanicals sourced from their local surroundings at Green Farm resonated with our wish to develop high quality, sustainable products from the estate here.”

These flavoursome Spanish-style pork burgers are made from 97% pork, seasoned with paprika and are dairy and gluten-free. We served them on a toasted brioche with garlic mayo, caramelised onions and crisp lettuce. The verdict? A tasty alternative to beef burgers to spice up your BBQ offering.

Method 1. Grate the courgette with a coarse grater, pop onto a clean t-towel and squeeze out the excess water 2. Place the flour, halloumi, sweetcorn and courgette in a large bowl and mix together 3. Whisk the milk, egg and Tracklements Sweet Pepper Relish 4. Mix the wet ingredients with the dry and season 5. Heat a little oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat 6. Cook the fritters in batches spooning as many tablespoons of the tablespoons of the batter into the pan 7. Fry to golden brown and then flip over to cook the other side 8. Serve in a bun topped with the relish or with a selection of salads and use the relish as a dip.
