YORK LIFE

HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING?!? Hey guys. To be honest we're all in a bit of a tizzy at YLL HQ after we put the finishing touches to this issue. Once we typed the word FEBRUARY on the front cover we all went quiet. Surely it can't be February already? We distinctly remember it being Christmas Day yesterday, and the thought of Valentines Day and the month ending three days earlier than most, was a far and distant fantasy. Like living on Mars. Or a pill you can take that gives you super powers. But it's here already, which only proves that time is ticking away. Which depressed us, no end. Still, at least February is always a fun month, especially if you happen to live or work within the boundaries of Ye Olde Citie of Yorke. February is, thankfully, about a lot more than being unhappy about being single, or by crumbling under the pressure of The Perfect Valentines Date (which isn't

possible, trust us). Yep, Feb rocks. First up, you're not truly a Yorkie unless you associate the second month of the year with rampaging Vikings. The Jorvik Viking Festival is, of course, returning to the city with oodles of Norse goodness, from historical talks and lectures, to axe-swinging, ale-downing, beardgrooming fun on the streets. Oh, and we've got the full deets later in the mag. As well as that, you should make way over to the NRM this month to see an actual spaceship. Tim Peake's Soyuz capsule – the real one that brought him back from the space station – will be on display, along with lots of related cosmic fun games. So from gruff Vikings, all the way to earth orbit, York's doing pretty well for itself this month. Have a good 'un!

Guys and Dolls... and you Guys and Dolls is a musical romantic comedy involving the unlikeliest of Manhattan pairings: a high-rolling gambler and a puritanical missionary, and a showgirl dreaming of the straight-and-narrow, with a crap game manager who is anything but. Based on the short stories of Damon Runyon, York Light are bringing the classic show to the York Theatre Royal, 7th-17th March, for a riotous run. n To find out more, visit www.yorklight.com The great news is that we have a pair of tickets up for grabs, good for the show on the evening of 12th March. For a chance of winning, just answer this question: Whose short stories is Guys and Dolls based upon? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘York Light Competition’ to the address on page six, or via email to competitions@yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 28th February so don’t delay. YORK LIFE

and life in general

AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG

Ah, school. The happiest days of our lives. And, obviously, the years in which we learn all the really useful stuff that prepares us for adult life. There’s nothing like having teenagers hurtling towards GCSE and beyond to make you reflect on all said useful things you learnt at school. Take chain-stitch, for example. How could I possibly have made it to adulthood, had I not learnt to chain-stitch a felt parrot onto a peg-bag? This particular activity occupied what felt like about three years when I was eight

or so. I am sure my parents felt their school fee money was being very well spent. And then there was being taught to play Little Donkey on the recorder by a teacher whose own particular musical talent consisted of conducting loudly via her nose. Comes in handy every Christmas. In fact, I will try busking outside Betty’s next December in the hope that people pay me to go away. Let’s not forget the art of climbing up and down a rope, and learning to tie your apron strings in a neat bow behind your back before lunch (the teacher on duty checked every one of us before we were allowed in to the dining room). This is a skill I have often called upon in the intervening years. All very useful things for young Junior School ladies to learn, no doubt. But life became even more useful once we made it to the Senior School and no longer had to wear aprons to eat our Spotted Dick.

Yes: everything I would ever need in adulthood was on offer then. Take allotropy. My definition of this particular… thing is still word perfect, and I still haven’t a clue what it meant. However, it did gain me two whole percent in a Chemistry exam. Because the Chemistry teacher was nice, when he wasn’t hitting us with a metre-stick, he gave me an extra mark for spelling my own name correctly, too. Yes, I did achieve three percent in Chemistry. How about the Ablative Absolute? And the Tenor Clef? Both absolutely vital, if you ask me. Along with Gustavus Adolphus’ participation in the Ingrian War (1610-1617. I know you were wondering). Not to mention the French subjunctive and how to ask the way to Calatrava in Spanish. While we’re on the subject of languages, I still know how to say “there is no-one on

the ferry” in Italian. Frightfully helpful when you’re trying to order Zuppa Della Casa in Little Italy on Goodramgate.

In fact, nobody ever seemed to realise that the only Maths I would ever need to know would involve working out whether tweed skirts in the Clarkson’s post-Christmas sales are good value or not. Of course, if we leave aside apron bow-tying, the fact is that the very best things we learn at school are the ones that are genuinely no practical use to us at all in real life. Memorising entire books of Virgil and passages of Shakespeare; hours spent copying out Betjeman poems in the library (having faked an excuse note for Games); becoming so excited by Disraeli that you actually wade through Coningsby: so they probably won’t get you a job, but life would be so much poorer without them. That said, I might be richer if I’d been able to apply the Law of Cosines and become an engineer or Something Really Useful. And that’s not to mention the friendships that have endured almost 50 years, or the ability to Make Conversation, or the compulsion to do voluntary work of some kind, or the habit of always using a fountain pen (even if my, um, flamboyant handwriting now bears little resemblance to the neat cursive script in which we were taught repeatedly to write out “Cobbler, cobbler, mend my shoe…”. As you will have noticed, we were also taught not to split infinitives). School? Deo Gratias. That’s Latin. Or at least I think it is.

21ST JAN - 18TH FEB

Envy and jealousy are not normal Aquarian traits, so if you are feeling these emotions from time to time, it won’t be without good cause. You’ll be pleased by someone else’s success, but there is a part of you that says “that should be me up there, and they wouldn’t be where they are today if I hadn’t been there to help them along the way.” Don’t beat yourself up over this, because after all, you’re only human!

These are quiet thoughts that you will keep to yourself, which is just as well, because others would not really understand how you were feeling…or why! Job-wise, it’s a case of “same old, same old”, but the good news here is that you’re safe and secure. Relationships with partners could do with a bit of a boost, and you’re not going to achieve that just by sitting in front of the telly.

GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN

Interaction with fire signs, notably people born in Leo, might have a role to play this month, and anyone interested in animals or animal welfare will have a very busy and committed month. In emotional situations, other people will want (and expect) you to follow their advice, but take pause for thought here, and heed your own inner voice of wisdom.

11th hour journeys lead to unexpected reunions with family and friends, and February is a month filled with a high degree of social activity. Career minded members of the sign will be looking ahead to certain dates on the calendar, both this year and next, rubbing their hands in anticipation. Some domestic tension around the 15th concerning finances.

A tough month for many Taureans as you come to realise that some of your plans and expectations must be changed if they are ever to be achieved. There is strong support and good advice from lovers and partners, but your impatience could lead you into making grand gestures, which slow things down rather than speeding them up.

Don’t worry too much if this month gets off to a slow start because once past the 11th or 12th the pace picks up very quickly and you’ll not have enough hours in the day to do all of the things you need to do. Some new job routines may be thrust upon you around the 15th and this may mean putting emotional priorities on the back burner for a while.

LEO 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG Pleasantly, and possibly to your own surprise, romantic and sexual agendas have priority at this time, and February could be a lovely month for affairs of the heart – and especially for those tentatively embarking on new emotional relationships. Social aspects could become quite intense, especially in the second half of the month when work seems to be less important.

romantic aspects of your life which are in ascendence. Some of you may be nervous about new relationships, but there is an air of excitement, especially between the 11th and the 16th, when you’ll be spending on your appearance and enjoying late nights.

SCORPIO 24TH OCT- 222ND NOV You’ll be considering a number of emotional issues this month and there are questions being asked. How serious is serious? How much commitment is needed to secure something desirable? How sincere is someone else being, both with their words and actions? Finding the answers might be scary, but it should also be exciting and a lot of fun.

Quite a busy month on the work scene, and although you’ll be feeling tired and unenthusiastic, you will appreciate your improving bank balance. A gentle word of warning here… please don’t forget the significance of the 14th!

when what you want to do is run! Unfortunately the reins of power are in other hands, and you’ll have to follow their lead, whether you like it or not. Of course, you won’t like it, and this will bring the slightly devious and schemey side of your nature to the surface. Ooops!

With one exception, eg. the health of an older relative, February looks like being a very positive month with the accent firmly on family matters and domestic routines. Travel aspects will be discussed and planned, and all forms of communication are extremely important. 22ND DEC - 20TH JAN

YORK LIFE Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: THE JUDGES’ LODGINGS Ever had a drink, or indeed spent a night, at the hotel and bar on Lendal called The Judges' Lodgings? Chances are you have, especially on a warm summer's evening when that beer garden out front is totally inviting. However, have you ever wondered if the titular judges mind you supping a bev in their front yard, or why in fact such a grand building is nestled there, set back from a street lined with shops and bakeries? If so, read on you glorious wonderer...

some time after 1550, making it, and the connected burial ground, a prime city-centre location for development. Enter Dr Clifton Wintringham. Dr Cliff was one of the leading physicians of the early 18th century, tending to the health of the likes of the Earl of Carlisle, the owner of Castle Howard. The good doctor required some fine lodgings within

JUDGING BY THE EVIDENCE To peel back the history of what today is a very popular pub, we must first start, as we often do in dear old York, with a church. Occupying land between Lendal and Blake Street was once St Wilfred's, a church so old it predated the Norman Conquest of 1066. That ancient structure was demolished

the city and so, between 1711 and 1726, the house was constructed on the site of St Wilfred's burial

ground. At the time of building it was reported that dozens and dozens of burials were discovered and, likely, completely ignored by the builders as they sank their foundations.

JUDGE NOT The new house, with stone-carved fruit and depictions of Greek gods above the door, clearly caused a stir locally. Writer Francis Drake commented in 1736 that it was “one of the best built houses in the city”. Also, John Cossins, an early map-maker, included a drawing of the house in his 1727 New and Exact Plan of the City of York, to show off the city's trend toward fashionable architecture. On that note, the architect is unknown, but it is thought to be the work of Lord Burlington who designed the Assembly Rooms just behind the house.

In 1746 Dr Wintringham was made the Physician of York County Hospital and enjoyed great success as a medical author and for the detailed meteorological records he kept; convinced that climate and health were linked. He died just two years later, survived by his son, Clifton Junior, who would go on to be the personal physician to King George III. Ooo...

JUDGE DREAD So where are all the judges who, y'know, lodged here? Well, before we get to them, there is one interesting side note. The next resident of the house on Lendal was one Dr Dealtry, a chap you can visit today as a monument in York Minster. Dealtry occupied the house until 1773 and was most noted for refusing to remove the old headstones from the former burial ground which had been used to line

And so, in 1806, the house was bought by the County of York to act as lodgings for the Judges of the Assizes Court. Held at the Castle, where the Crown Court resides today, the Assizes were held every quarter and dealt with the most serious of crimes committed in the city and the county. The house was purchased to offer not only grand accommodation for the visiting judges, but also space for them to entertain.

JUDGEMENT DAY

The now renamed Judges' Lodgings were completely refurnished (we're guessing the tombstones were ripped out) and a Mr and Mrs Kilvington were installed as resident housekeepers, living in the smaller wing to the south-east. The uppermost floor was used for the visiting Judges' own servants, while the bigwigs themselves enjoyed grandiose suites with private chamber pot rooms. Cases were heard and fates decided by day, while at night the judges would drink and dine, attended to by a body of hard-working staff. Quite like the building of today, in many ways.

YORK LIFE

the kitchen floor – inscriptions facing up! Dr Dealtry was quoted as saying “to familiarise ourselves with the emblems of death is the most powerful means of humbling human pride.” Bet he was fun at parties.

The Assizes Courts were abolished in the 1970s, but the Judges' Lodgings had ended their tenure as actual lodgings for judges long before that. For many years empty, a small archaeological dig in the house in the 1980s revealed that, as well as cutting through the crammed medieval burial ground, the 18th century builders had also smashed right though a far older structure; a Roman building. The site – and this may have been the reason for that ancient pre-Norman church existing here at all – was once occupied by one the interval towers of the Roman defensive wall of Eboracum. Something to think about the next time you're huddled under a heater clutching your pint in the beer garden.

Dear

Dear Daphne, SECOND SHIFT Like my husband, I work full time. The trouble is, not one member of my family helps out around the house. My husband will deal with fixing things that break and the occasional dish wash - but other than that I’m coming home to a house full of work after I’ve already worked all day. My two kids who are both in their teens conveniently have homework any time I ask for help. I’m tired and I’m frustrated but have I left it too late?

Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.

Dear Daphne MONEY TALKS My partner and I (of 3 years) recently combined our finances and opened a joint bank account. We live together and split rent and utilities so it seemed like a good idea. The trouble is, I’m finding it increasingly frustrating to see her spending money on frivolous non essentials. I earn a little bit more, and sometimes she spends more than she’s putting in on personal items. How can I make her stop without causing an argument?

Striving for equality is still a daily battle for many women like yourself. How do you break out of the confines of history and into 2018? You need to get your partner to set an example to your children - with two of you showing a united front it should make for an easier battle. If your family are less than willing, go on strike. Don’t do anything they wouldn’t and see their reactions as the house falls into disarray. Worst case scenario, they don’t notice and it drives you crackers. Best case scenario it sparks a conversation between your family members when they wonder why there’s no clean pants magically appearing in their drawers anymore. I’m there in spirit!

0002 0003 0004

It doesn’t seem like you actually wanted to combine finances, because you still see your ‘joint’ income as your money, and her money. On the other hand - its not actually fair for her to splash your joint cash on non necessary luxury items without consulting you first. Perhaps a gentle conversation about running splurge items past you, and vice versa, it is your shared money and it affects you too. To save argument I would refrain from reminding her that you earn more - it shouldn’t be part of the issue if you truly wanted to pool your resources in the first place and move forward together. Happy spending!

and sad retaliations. I wasn’t a witty teenager, I certainly did myself no favours.

Facebook memories & the stuff I’d rather forget

GIG OF THE MONTH

BUZZ: You have memories with Joe Bloggs and 7 others to look back on today… My phone is telling me that Facebook has got some memories it would like to share with me.

NORTHERN RADAR PRESENTS...

BILLY LOCKET WHERE: The Basement WHEN: 6th February 2018, 8pm INFO: Pre 2015 Lockett was supporting big acts such as Lana Del Rey and KT Tunstall before personal tragedy struck. He returns with a new style and plethora of emotionally intelligent songs.

Memory Lane doesn’t usually scare me, so I dive right in and get scrolling. Mostly, the memories are good - that time when I fell over in front of my boyfriend before we got together, pictures with old school friends. I grimace at pouty selfies and chuckle at private jokes from days gone by.

’You do things to make people think you’re cool and now everyone has realised you’re not.’ ‘Besides your closest friends, nobody likes you, even some people who you think are friends don’t like you.’ These are the safe-to-publish comments, there was much, much worse (lots of swear words, some very inappropriate comments abut how my parents should have never had me). I can feel my cheeks burning as I stare at my phone, embarrassed for 16 year old Krystal, with her bad spelling

I scroll to a status with 118 comments and my stomach turns. Something I hadn’t thought about for six years comes back into focus and suddenly I “IT’S feel intensely sad. Someone had got onto my account and left a joke status when I was at sixth form. On this

WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE NOW, BUT YOU SUCK”

I hadn’t remembered sixth form like this. I’d told myself that I was naughty and didn’t care about learning, but actually, I got so badly bullied that I just couldn’t bare to go anymore. Somewhere along the line my mind has edited out the bad memories, and replaced them with cooler, less upsetting versions of what happened. I’m actually good friends with some of the people who were involved, I’ve bought them pints on nights out, chatted candidly about our lives. I didn’t remember the things they said when I was young and I’ve never felt hostility to them in recent years. But this got me thinking, how many more supposedly ‘good’ times am I going to have blasted apart by the cringe inducing accuracy of the Facebook Memories feature? It’s like I put a filter on all of the horrible things that happened to me and now, clear as day, they’re coming back - not how I wanted to remember. This isn’t an uncommon phenomena: Eye witness testimonies are notoriously unreliable. We change the narratives of our own lives, albeit not intentionally. Ed Young, A British Science Journalist explained in

can be an uncomfortable experience to re-live what were potentially some of the worst months of your life on social media.

I’ve clearly re-written many of my own.

P.S. to those mates who I’d forgotten about - it’s water under the bridge now, but you suck and I hope you don’t let your future kids treat other people the way you did.

It’s nice to look back on memories, I get the romance of photo albums and journals. But when you’ve altered past experiences in your mind to heal, it

FINANCIAL PLANNING IN COLOUR

BUSINESS

ASK THE EXPERT...

There’s a common misconception about financial planning: it’s all about getting a better return on your investment, and also that it’s about this ISA instead of that IS; this pension instead of that pension; this fund instead of that fund. But these things are only the tools we use to help people get what they want. Proper financial planning is a process of helping clients get, and maintain, the lifestyle they choose without fear of running out of money, whatever happens. Precious time is slipping away. Can you believe Freddie Mercury died 26 years ago? Or that the twin towers terrorist attack happened over 16 years ago? Life isn’t a rehearsal. You need to do the things you want to do and get the things you want to get NOW.

The fact is...

We know that clients aren’t interested in graphs and spreadsheets, fact and figures. Sure, we have to understand where you are now to work out what we need to do to get you to where you want to go, but that is not where our value lies. Our clients are interested in financial security and the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you can get and maintain your chosen lifestyle., and that you can do the things you want to do for you, and your family, without fear or worry. Most financial planning is done in black and white, but we consider ourselves as alternative financial planners. Because we do financial planning in colour.

Injection of colour

If you want us to bring some colour into your financial future, just give us a call on 01904 819786 and we’ll see if we can help you. An initial chat to see if we can work together is entirely at our expense, so you have nothing to lose.

SPORT REPORT

with Dan Tait The halfway point of the football season, and York City’s first in regionalised football, appeared to be nothing short of a disaster. Not just defeats to high flying neighbours Harrogate Town and promotion favourites Salford City, but dismal displays against Boston and Blyth, left supporters wondering how low can the club sink as the Minstermen dropped to midtable in the National League North, or as I like to call it: the abyss. However, such is football; a few wins and you have that unwarranted feeling of optimism again. Three on the spin at time of writing (North Ferriby twice and Darlington) and suddenly a successful campaign

Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.

culminating in promotion back to the National League, or as I like to call it; the abyss premier, is being widely talked about. In a strange way, the season is turning out to be excellent proof of supporting your club through thick and thin. I guess it's always been this way, from being a school boy in York and being one of a handful of city fans, in amongst countless Man United supporters; a term I use loosely as a friend wearing a Red Devil’s shirt with Beckham on the back, calling round to see I was coming out to play footie, just as the 1999 Champions League was about to kick off.

SNAP I like to take one photo of each ground to act as (hopefully) a unique memento from the club’s short time at this level, though at the minute it just looks like a collection of shots from local parks. Darlington away has to be my least favourite visited

this season, peering on a hill on what felt like the coldest day of the year. I googled it the day before, though Darling Buds of May was my predicted search, and thought it (Blackwell Meadows) looked like a shed, before noticing the stand itself was indeed called “The Tin Shed End”.

I contemplated buying a cup of tea to pour over my feet but settled for the warmth of Jon Parkin’s penalty winner, which felt particularly sweet given every time in the first half York’s talisman was offside, the Darlo fans chanted that his belly was offside.

WE ARE DUST in their defence of the urn. They were showing reruns by the time I tuned in. A 4-0 defeat to the condescending Aussies was bad enough, but Jimmy Anderson, fresh from having a drink poured over his head by Ben Duckett, said he didn’t think “the tour was a disaster”.

KHAAAAN! Finally, Amir Khan has announced his boxing comeback, signing a three-fight deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom promotions. Three fights feels a bit optimistic in my opinion given his length of absence from the ring, and main preparation being surrounded by Z list celebrities in Australia where

he hardly proved himself as a real hardman. As I pointed out last month, he has a bit of a glass chin, which my mum thought was literal. She beat that one over Christmas by stating that she wouldn’t want to live in a Bungalow unless it had an upstairs.

YOUR GADGETS

IT’S LETTERS ON PLASTIC Number plates; what is yours? If right now you’re reeling off a string of seemingly random letters and numbers, you’re clearly not in that ‘special’ group of people who own a personalised registration plate. If you’re hoping to get one, and have an idea about what you’re after, prepare to fork out the big bucks, especially if it has a number 1 in it. Here are the Top 5 most expensive number plates ever sold in Britain: 5, S1. Sold at auction in 2008 for £404,000, S1 is now valued at almost £1 million. What? 4, F1. Originally purchased for £440,000, the evocative F1 plate currently resides on the front of a Bugatti Veyron. Fair enough. 3, G1. Estimated to now be worth twice what the current owner paid for it, which was £500,000 in 2011, G1 would be perfect for a Graham or a Garry, or indeed a Gabrielle or Gini. 2, X1. Sold at auction in 2012 for £502,000, nobody knows what car the X1 plate currently adorns. Perhaps it is Professor Charles Xavier’s car from the X-Men. Dunno. 1, 25 0. Yeah, it’s a weird one at the top spot, but 25 0 is the most expensive plate sold in Blighty, fetching £518,000 at auction.

THIEVES’ FAVOURITES

THIS GUY IS A TOTAL CYCLE-PATH We’ll be honest – we’re not sure is this is real or staged, but... get on YouTube and search for ‘Bike fires at scooter, with fireworks’ and you’ll be treated to what we think is an Italian video of a cyclist getting bike rage. Filmed from a POV chest cam, the cyclist gets cut up by two people on a scooter, before hurling abuse and harsh Italian words at each other. Then we see the cyclist load something into a tube on his bike, before it erupts and fireworks blast the scooter. This continues for a minute or so, with the cyclist laughing and reloading his fireworks cannon, before the scooter stops and the two people flee on foot. Again, this could be staged, but it gave those of us who cycle in the office some food for thought. So watch it, petrol heads.

Worryingly, more than 85,000 cars were reported as stolen in 2017 – that is a 30% rise since 2013. Apparently, one cause for this increase in stolen motors is the rise in ‘relay theft’ whereby thieves use radio waves to unlock cars that are of the modern key-less variety. PetrolPrices.com, a fuel price comparison site, has compiled a list of the cars that were most likely to be stolen last year, which begs the question: is yours on the list? Leading the pack of those most prized by cheeky tea leaves is the Audi A3, followed closely by the A4. After that, the BMW 730D was highly sought after, most probably by crims stealing the cars to order to be quickly sold on. If you have a keyless car, experts suggest that you use a steering lock to combat these new kinds of crimes. Hopefully, you therefore won’t be included in car theft stats for this year.

NATIONAL POTHOLE INITIATIVE ANNOUNCED IN YORK The government is pledging £46 million toward repairing and filling potholes across the country, as well as more than £150 million to reward councils who do a good job at keeping their roads in tiptop condition... such as York. The announcement was made by Transport Minister Jesse Norman during a recent move to York, to see how we record and deal with our own potholes. York is currently trialling a system where bin lorries and buses are fitted with cameras which scan the road they pass over, detecting potholes. This means they can be repaired quicker and reduce the number of costly incidents potholes can cause, both for motorists and the council, who often have to fork out to pay for damages. This sounds great, and good to know that York is leading the charge. Let’s hope some of that reward money finds it’s way here, eh?

Yet the hundreds of Norse-derived terms that

44 46

we use on a daily basis in English are amongst the most significant ‘artefacts’ the Vikings left behind. This talk by Sara Pons-Sanz of Cardiff University and the Gersum Project will explore the influence of Old Norse on the English language, the evidence that we have for the identification of Norse-derived terms and the cultural and sociolinguistic information that they provide.

FRI 16TH | 10:00 | YORK EXPLORE | ADULT £6.50 CONC. £5.50 Think you know the story of 1066? Think again…. Joanna Courtney’s ‘Queens of the Conquest’ series explores the lives of Edyth of Mercia, Elizaveta of Kiev and Mathilda of Flanders in their own quests to promote their homeland, support their husbands and, ultimately, to become Queen of England. Explore the events leading up to the end of AngloSaxon England from a female perspective with Joanna at this special and intriguing talk. MACBETH, THE NORTH, AND 1066 WITH JUSTIN HILL ------------------------------------------------------------FRI 16TH | 15:30 | YORK EXPLORE | ADULT £6.50 CONC. £5.50 The events of 1066 are often seen through the prism of what happened in the south of England.

However, the events that lead to the Norman Conquest happen here, in the north, in the struggle between the real-life historical figures of Duncan, Macbeth and Earl Siward. In an illustrated talk, bestselling author Justin Hill recounts this little-known story, which is just as bloody and compelling as the Shakespearean play.

TIME WELL SPENT

If the new year as spurred you on to try something new, why not hold off on that bungee jump for a couple of months? Instead, try something that will be a lot more rewarding, doesn't involve flying to new Zealand, and won't require a change of pants. Beningbrough Hall, that stately wonder looked after by The National Trust just north of the city, is looking for dedicated new volunteers. If you fancy something different, while making some new friends, you should give 'em a shot. As well as all the usual voluntary jobs you'd expect from a big old stately home, they also need someone who is social media savvy. I'd do it, but I'd end up tweeting endless photos of my lunches and getting into arguments about Donald Trump. Still, if you're a bit more professional, call 472027 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/beningbrough.

Dark mornings, chilly days, sore bums from slipping on ice... oh, what a joy the British winter is. However, did you know that not everywhere on earth is like this at this time of year, and that right now some lucky so-and-sos are sunning themselves on beaches and sipping cocktails on the decks of cruise ships? If the thought of planning a getaway to somewhere sunny is a little daunting, let these experts handle it all. Recently opened in Fulford is Savannah Travel, staffed with travel agents with a combined experience in the industry of over 35 years. The dedicated, friendly team can help with planning every aspect of your holiday, and offer 24/7 support while you're away. Which is nice to know. With their help, you should have your feet up in a hammock in no time. Visit www.savannahtravel.co.uk or call 623444. Meet the team at a Holiday Travel Show they are hosting on 24th February at St Oswald’s Church Hall, Fulford. Hear from tour operators and cruise lines to get inspired for your next adventure. Call ‘em for more info.

GET CAUGHT IN THIS WEB Okay, so you've had a month to recover, both physically and financially, after Christmas. So when is the first kids' birthday party gonna hit? If you're already panicking because little Billy's is in March, and lovely Annabelle's is in early May, chill out will you? I have it on good authority that the Web Adventure Park on Wigginton Road offer stress-free birthday party packages – ones that even mums and dads will enjoy. With a range which offers something for every child, their parties include the original Bugtastic (free play) party, Animal Petting, Make a Bear, High Ropes and Crafty Parties, as well as the new Laser Parties with exclusive use of Creepy Crawlies! Oh my God... LASER Parties?!? Damn the kids, I'm booking one for myself. Mind you, book quickly - this month the parties are even better value as they’re offering a free four week Creepy Crawlies pass for the birthday child when you book before the end of February. Working on that smile Are you a denture wearer? If so, depending on where you had your dentures fitted, you might have noticed that from time to time they can be uncomfortable – hurt, even. Also, many types of dentures can completely alter the shape of the wearer’s face, giving them a premature aged look which is the last thing that anyone wants. But, thankfully, it really doesn’t have to be that way. Smile Denture Clinic, based in Haxby, take an entirely more personal approach to designing and fitting dentures. For a start, they use the very latest in technology to ensure the perfect fit, coupled with years of experience in the dentistry field to make sure the dentures will stand the test of time. Secondly – and most importantly – the friendly team of the clinic actually take the time to listen to the needs of their customers to make sure they get exactly what they want. HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU

ASK THE EXPERT

SHAPE OF YOU This month resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, talks about a how you can achieve a contoured body shape with a little help from the Body-Jet System. When it comes to bodies, many conversations go something like this: “I wish I could take the fat I have here, and put it there”. Whether it be from tummy to bum or chin to breast, with the Body-Jet system it’s now totally possible.

T H E B O D Y- J E T S Y S T E M Here at Skin Doctor, we use a unique liposuction treatment that uses gentle water jets to remove fat from the body. The pressure of a fine, fan-shaped water-jet is adjusted to the connective-tissue structures in order to detach the fat cells which are then removed immediately. It causes much less trauma than the conventional method and post op, clients can anticipate less pain and bruising.

LOCAL ANAESTHETIC No need to go under. Body-Jet liposuction is performed under local anaesthetic. This reduces the time you need to be with us and avoids recovery from a general anaesthetic and overnight hospital fees.

T R E AT M E N T A R E A S Virtually any area of the body can be treated with liposuction. Popular areas include: Tummy, thighs, arms, knees, chin, neck, and chest for males.

The system is comfortably used in cases of large volume areas and very fine detail liposuction.

CONTOURING The fat taken during the procedure, known as autologus fat, can actually be transferred elsewhere for body contouring, it works as a natural filling substance, with no risk of allergic reactions. Many people use the fat for breast enlargement or reconstruction, buttock shaping, wound treatment and facial rejuvenation.

THE LOW DOWN • Treatment time: 2-4 hours • Visible results: Reduce fat, contours and can shape the buttock, breasts etc. • Results duration: permanent • Price: from £3000 SKIN DOCTOR CLINICS, Offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly caring service. YOUR HOME & GARDEN

keeping warm in the bathroom We hear from Mel Collier of JDL... A question I get asked regularly regards heating in a bathroom and what is the best thing to use: radiator, towel rail or underfloor. The answer is relatively simple, and depends on the size of the space you are trying to heat and how warm the ambient temperature of the room is when there is no heating on. RADIATOR For us in the UK, this is still the most common form of heating and is tried and tested when it comes to providing heat on demand. The problem with standard radiators is they take up a lot of wall space and the cheaper versions do not hold up well in a humid environment like a bathroom and will, over time, rust. TOWEL RAIL Towel rails are the heating source we use most in a bathroom environment but they do have their limitations. If you have a particularly cold room, a towel rail as your only heat source will not be enough. Also, as soon as you place a towel over the rail, the heat goes into the towel and not the room, which limits it further. There are a couple of ways to get around this; the first would be to go for a taller rail which would still leave some of it exposed if you put towels on it. The second would be to go for

60

a rail that incorporates some kind of flat panel element as these radiate more heat. The third is to choose a coloured rail over a chrome one as, because of the manufacturing process, chrome rails emit around 20% less heat than their coloured counterparts. UNDERFLOOR HEATING With underfloor heating you have a choice of a wet system or an electric system. The wet system links to your heating source (boiler etc.) and the electric system works as a matting which goes beneath your floor covering. Underfloor heating gives you a luxurious feel in a bathroom as you step out of your bath or shower on to a lovely warm floor, but for the full benefit, it needs to be in a bigger space, and the electric version can be expensive to run. Because at JDL we are electrical engineers as well as plumbers and gas engineers, we can advise you on the best means of heating your room when we come to do your survey. If you give us a call you’ll always have our Which? Trusted Trader guarantee which means we will offer you the solution that is right for you as a consumer.

ALWAYS OPEN No, we're not 'doing a Tesco' and leaving the doors to Herbert Todd & Son wide open throughout the night... I'm talking about our website. Although only a few years ago you might have laughed at the thought of doing some shopping past midnight, these days people are sitting in bed and whipping their fingers across their phone screens to bag a few bargains before drifting off. In my opinion, you've not lived until you've bought a cooker while sipping hot coco in your slippers. Head over to www.htodd.co.uk and try it for yourself, wink wink. Meanwhile, in the world of sunshine and bird song, we've recently started to offer Saturday delivery on our products. This is something that customers have been requesting for a while, so we listened, and started to do it. Early reactions seem very positive, and it makes total sense to deliver something on Saturday as there is far more chance you'll be in, simplifying the delivery process for you. And remember, as well as delivering your new purchase,

depending on what it is, we can also install it. Just ask when ordering. THE OTHER WAY... So apart from that great start to the year, and our customers continued happiness with our Internet Price Guarantee (thanks to all those who have been passing on their gratitude), I have unfortunately been suffering from this stinking round of flu that seems to have struck absolutely everyone. Still, time in bed reminded me to remind you all that, despite our fancy click 'n' buy website, and our new home at Monks Cross, Herbert Todd & Son still offer a rental service on many appliances. Our payment plans are highly competitive, and we offer 'round the clock support to all our customers, quickly replacing or repairing anything that breaks down. Renting is a great way to get your hands on the latest in kitchen, cleaning, and audio-visual technology right now, so give us a call to discuss your needs. Apart from that, hope all is well and enjoy February! Matt x

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

Despite what you might have heard, you can do a lot in the garden during February. If the weather is mild now is a good time to get set for the spring-time sowing and planting. February is the best time to buy your plants and summer flowering bulbs for a nice, bright show of colour later in the season. Bulbs and tubers such as Gladioli and Dahlias can be started in pots, as long as they are in a frost free place such as a greenhouse or cold frame. Also, sweet peas can be sown and placed in a cold frame. If the soil is still workable, now is an ideal time to dig your borders and prepare seed beds for the spring. Turn over the soil to improve aeration and drainage. Plus, covering the soil with clear polythene or cloches is an ideal way to warm it before sowing, but if the conditions are poor try adding some gravel or grit to improve the drainage, giving your plants the best possible start for the year.

BUGS If you are hoping to grow anything in the greenhouse make sure it is completely free from any signs of pests and disease. White fly and red spider mite may be on plants that have been over-wintered, and if you spot them, throw out the whole plant and start again. Sterilising your

greenhouse is an ideal way to begin, cleaning the glazing and framework along with any old pots or seed trays which you plan to use when spring kicks in. Towards the back end of February the main job for the garden is pruning. Cut back any perennials and ornamental grasses, thereby encouraging new growth later on, along with summer flowering deciduous shrubs such as Buddleia. Deadheading winter bedding and removing old leaves is also a good idea now before the plants start to fill out next month. And it'll make you garden look neater.

DIGGING DEEP

your garden that are either in the wrong place or have grown too big. You can prepare the new site by digging in some compost and bonemeal to help aid root development, and then water it in well, firming in the soil around the shrub. If you do find yourself trapped inside because of the icy weather, why not check your gardening equipment and give them a good clean and maintenance? You could oil and sharpen secateurs, clean spades and forks, and tidy away any debris littering your shed. It may also be a good time to service the lawnmower. So with all this in mind, wrap up warm and get out into the garden to make a difference and look forward to the season ahead. Oh, and don’t forget to feed the birds and make sure they have a constant supply of fresh water when the weather is cold!

If the weather stays nice continue to plant shrubs, trees, deciduous hedging and roses. Hopefully the ground won't be frozen, so you can also move any shrubs that you may have in

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask

CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES

If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Q.

I have some hybrid tea roses in the garden of the house I have just moved into. Could you please offer some advice about pruning and caring for them? Hybrid teas are usually sold as one year old plants. They must be pruned hard on planting, cutting stems about 4-6 inches from the ground. They need no further formative pruning or training after their full growing season. For established plants, remove as necessary any dead, diseased, or damaged growth during the growing and flowering season, and any suckers. Dead-head regularly to encourage a continual show of flowers. The dormant season, from November to March, is the best time to do the annual pruning. This consists of removing all unproductive and unhealthy shoots, and shortening what remains. Only strong, healthy growth is retained to supply vigorous shoots in the flowering season. Most large-flowered bush roses are naturally upright, and this often leads to over crowded stems in the centre of the bush. By selectively shortening stems to healthy, outward-pointing buds, a wellshaped and open-centrened bush can be formed, allowing free air circulation and reducing the risk of disease. First remove dead or diseased wood, and any stumps left from previous years' pruning that did not produce worthwhile shoots. Cut away thin shoots

of less than a pencil's thickness. They are unlikely to flower and will be the first to get blackspot. Remove branches that cross in the centre of the bush. Finally, shorten the remaining stems to approximately 10-12 inches from the ground. The exact height will have to vary from stem to stem, as it is impossible to keep cutting to exactly the same point. Cut to a suitable, preferably outward-facing, bud 2-3 inches above last year's cut. But when the stem in question has three to four 'steps' in it, then cut well back into the older wood, if possible to a strong basal shoot. This should give you a strong, healthy rose for years to come!

Q.

I have never grown gooseberries before, but I would like some advice with to how grow and prune them, please. Gooseberries are most often bought as one year old rooted cuttings, although older plants are sometimes available. The aim is to produce a bush 1.2 to 2 metres (4-6ft) tall, with a strong frame-work of 8-12 main branches on a short leg. Branches should be well-spaced, and the centre as open as possible. The bush should take the shape of a goblet, to aid air circulation and make picking easier. Choose a strong specimen with at least three good shoots and plants in autumn or winter, staking initially in

exposed sites as the new growth is fragile. Do not grow gooseberries in frost pockets as the early spring flowers are liable to be frost-damaged. A sheltered but airy site, shaded for part of the day, is ideal. As with red currants, die-back may be a problem. If it reaches the main stem, the bush must be uprooted and burnt. Otherwise, cut affected growth back to the completely healthy wood, if possible to a replacement shoot. Prune in winter or just as buds are beginning to burst in early spring. First year pruning: prune back each shoot by three-quarters to an outward-facing bud. Prune to an upward facing bud on a cultivar with pendent branches. Second year pruning: Select eight to ten wellspaced strong shoots and shorten the renaming shoots to four buds, and remove any that are crossing.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN

THE INS AND OUTS OF FEBRUARY VEG GROWING TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS. Although the days are lengthening, February is often the coldest month of the year. There may be snowdrops and aconites in bloom, and winter vegetables to harvest such as sprouts or leeks, but it’s generally far too early to think of sowing or planting many crops outside. Only at the very end of the month, and then only if the weather has warmed up and the forecast suggests it is set to stay that way, do I consider any outdoor planting. The earliest crops planted outside are usually shallots and Jerusalem artichokes, both of which are very hardy. It is sometimes said that shallots should be planted even earlier in December (old garden lore

has it that they should be planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest), but this doesn’t seem to offer any advantage, so I prefer to wait until the closing days of winter.

SOW WHAT? I’m fortunate in having greenhouses and polytunnels so nearly all my other February sowing and planting is inside. It’s around Valentine’s Day when I usually make the first sowings of the year. Some of these are for early crops that will be planted outside when the weather warms up, such as broad beans. Others are for tender crops that need an early start like tomatoes and peppers. These need extra warmth, meaning a small greenhouse has to be heated – costly and environmentally not ideal, it is only something to consider if you grow a lot of tender veg. All the other February inside sowing and planting is for crops to be harvested in late spring or very early summer. New potatoes are one of the most rewarding veg to grow

in this way. I grow in the greenhouse border but you could use a large pot or, rather more expensively, a potato growing kit. Rocket is the variety I use. It may not be the tastiest, but planted late February it will provide harvestable tubers by mid-May.

GREEN FINGERS I like my greens so cabbage and calabrese (broccoli) are two other crops I always grow under cover from a February start. It’s important to choose a quick maturing type. The varieties I use are the pointed headed cabbage Greyhound and the compact calabrese Kabuki. Carrots, radish, spinach and various leaf salads, are amongst the other crops I also grow under cover from February. Some, like radish and salad leaves, will be ready within six to eight weeks. Even the slower carrots usually reach edible size by the end of May.

Of course, I’ve plenty of under cover growing area, but you don’t need a lot of space to grow a few early crops. Nor do you have to grow in soil. Spinach and salad leaves will be fine in growbags. Most of the others, including the potatoes as already mentioned, should be happy in largish pots or containers filled with good compost. Growing this way also means crops can be shuffled around as required to make best use of space and moved outside completely when the weather warms up. What’s more, once the crops are harvested, the pots, containers or growbags can be reused.

ALL THE BEST!
