FIND YOUR BRAVE This year as part of Children’s Mental Health Week, 3-9 February, Children’s charity Place2Be are encouraging you to Find Your Brave.
It wasn’t long until I got a last minute invite to a big night out in Liverpool and the quickest and easiest way to get there would be by driving.
I can count on two hands the amount of times I’ve been truly Brave. Some of those times might not have seemed brave to others, but to me, they redefined how I saw myself.
I got in my car, set up the sat nav and took a big gulp. The time to tackle the Big Girl Roundabouts had come… Sweaty hands and knotty stomach aside, I got over them with minimal drama.
Take York’s outer ring road for example. I managed to avoid crossing the Big Girl Roundabouts for weeks after I passed my driving test. I was the sort of driver who would happily go ten miles out of my own way to avoid a road I didn’t like the look of.
It turns out the Big Girl Roundabouts aren’t as treacherous as they once seemed. I cross them every day now on my commute and it’s like second nature to me. That was where I Found My Brave
in 2014. This year, Brave looks different. I’m going to Find My Brave by establishing more personal and professional boundaries, focussing on taking care of myself and trying to use my talents for good. This is a Brave month for Your Local Link, too. We’ve brought you more of what you asked for in our most recent survey and we’re including some new surprises too. All while moving office for the first time in a decade! *Gulp*

Music to your ears
You know when you’re chatting to someone and the subject of music comes up? The general response when asking them what genre they listen to is: “oh, I like a bit of everything”. That’s all well and good. I mean, I love ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ by the Spice Girls; but I equally love ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ by Guns N’ Roses. Go figure. One of my biggest passions in life is music: specifically 90s R&B, 80s and 90s funk and soul, new jack swing, acid jazz, and 90s hip hop. I worship the band Mint Condition (you won’t have heard of them); Will Downing (you might have heard of him), and Michael Jackson (I hope you’ve heard of him). Now I fully appreciate that my taste isn’t mainstream and I probably shouldn’t expect to find anyone that’s heard of these artists. But here’s the thing: it’s popular once you hit Manchester. The further south you go, the more people are listening to it. I’ve seen Mint Condition twice at the Jazz Café in London. Will Downing is playing in London, Manchester and Birmingham in March (obviously I’m going to all three venues). There are even weekly old school soul and R&B nights down south. Some occasionally crop up in Leeds. But that’s if you’re lucky. BAD FOR THE SOUL Living in York, there’s a very specific music scene. We’re gifted with some of the most
12
talented local performers – some would say more than most other cities – so our theatres are often filled to the brim with musicals. Pubs are overflowing with acoustic and rock soloists and bands. Bars such as the Stone Roses whet the appetites of York’s large indie music fan base. Then you’ve got Latino music in Las Iguanas and Bobo Lobo. Chart and pop music in most other bars and clubs. Rock and metal music in the Artful Dodger. Soul and R&B music nights in… oh wait, nowhere. And no, not Northern Soul. That’s something different. It got me thinking: there’s a gap in this market. Our city’s capable of a lot more when it comes to music. So what’s next for York? We’ve got the fantastic community stadium in development at Vangarde, which already offers a new cinema; and the exciting York Festival will be a first for us. Not only that, but there are plenty of rumours going around about the potential expanding of existing venues. But what could they offer? YORK BARBICAN Cllr Dave Taylor recently stated that our city lacks music venues, and that many people travel further afield to experience what they really want. And he believes a solution to this could be to expand the capacity of York Barbican. By going from its existing capacity of 1,700 to 2,000, larger acts would be able to play in York.
“A lot of young people and probably many older people as well, very often travel to neighbouring cities in order to access larger concerts,” says Taylor. “If the venue could be increased by 300, it means that York could attract much larger acts to play.” On the flip side, the Barbican’s capacity would still be significantly less than competing venues in surrounding cities, such as Leeds. Would an increase diversify the acts we host, or just give us bigger names? Probably the latter. My kind of legends, such as the Isley Brothers and George Benson, are already playing at Leeds First Direct Arena. But also playing in Leeds this year are Diana Ross, Stormzy, Barry Manilow and Snoop Dogg. They’re far too ‘celeb’ for little old York. FIBBERS Fibbers has moved around more times than I’ve had hot dinners (maybe an exaggeration); and for now, it’s gone completely. However, because York can’t function without having Fibbers in its life, there are new talks about it reopening in a surprise new venue. And the current speculation, at the time
COLUMNIST
Claire Pulpher
of writing, is that this could be Stonebow – where it famously resided from 1992-2014. While Fibbers might not have anywhere near the required capacity to play host to big-name R&B musicians, it’s certainly had its diverse music nights; with DJs playing tracks of different genres into the night. Not only that, but Fibbers has also been known to present indie/rock bands and artists such as Stereophonics, Kasabian and Shed Seven. We also recently lost The Duchess – another similar venue. So, have I convinced you yet that we’re in need of adding some spice to the York music scene? If I had an unlimited bank account, or the knowledge to start a business like this, then I’d lease a venue and open my own soul/funk/R&B bar tomorrow. Alternatively, if any existing venues want to let me and my music collection in for a night then I’d be more than happy to broaden our city’s horizons on my tod. What are your views on York’s entertainment? Is there anything you’d particularly like to see? Email me at claire.pulpher@yourlocallink.co.uk or give me a call on 01904 735216 – I’d love to hear from you.

Possibly quite a confusing month with different situations demanding your attention at different times. One of the big bug-bears right now is your level of discontent in connection with careers, and many of you will be looking for change in this area. New jobs, part-time hours, early retirement options, pension pots,
etc. all come under scrutiny at this time. This could be a bit scary, but it’s better than sitting there and doing nothing; hoping things will get better when you full well know that they won’t. One thing you’ve got going for you is the degree of love and support you’re getting from within the family. But even here you’ll be
feeling slightly pressured when you realise that lovers and partners have their own agendas: are they really on your side, or is there a subtle degree of subliminal manipulation going on? Older male members of the sign may need to be a bit more determined and ruthless when it comes to diet and exercise regimes, and while
this could also apply to females, I reckon it’s the guys who are most at risk. Something to do with insurance, especially travel insurance, could become significant in the last few days of the month. Shop around and don’t just go for the first deal you find.

19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
I won’t accuse you of looking smug, but there are certainly some high degrees of self-satisfaction making their presence felt throughout February, as a number of different things seem to fall into place without very much effort at all on your part. So, don’t rock the boat, just go with the flow, and relax as your previous months and years of patience begin to be rewarded.
ST
MAR - 19TH APR
Some wide mood swings during February – nothing happens quickly enough for you and your impatience works against you. There’s a dash of romance around the 14th but it won’t be enough to create a novel. Other folk may wonder what’s bugging you and you’ll be hard-pressed to tell them exactly – and that’s why ‘old Aries sings the blues’!
TH
APR - 20TH MAY
The dog days of midwinter are always a trial for Taureans, and rather than being loverbull you’re more likely to be irritabull and irrascabull. So get a grip, take a broad view of where your life is and where it’s going, and rejoice in your many blessings. Okay, finances may be a bit awkward after over-bending the plastic – but help is on the way.
ST
MAY - 20TH JUN
Relatively speaking this should be quite a calm and tranquil month, so don’t let minor niggles and irritations get blown out of proportion. You may be feeling some domestic claustrophobia during the last couple of weeks, so make a point of getting out a bit more: a midwinter visit to the seaside could bring some welcome fresh air, even if it’s freezing!

JUN - 22ND JUL
You should be feeling calm and confident, but there are some niggling worries about some of your recent decisions. Have they been right? Or wrong? The only way to find out is to let the dice roll and see what happens next. Something will happen around the 19th or 20th, which should give you the answers you need.

A busy month workwise, but also a fairly profitable one. A major decision concerns future financial investments, and you’ll be weighing up a number of pros and cons. You will need to advise a close friend or business partner on their financial priorities, and for this you will need a dispassionate state of mind and a cool head. Buy or sell? Sell!

OCT - 21ST NOV
Quite a sexy month for those in the mood for love, and even if that mood escapes you, there’s still a nice feeling of companionship and camaraderie in emotional relationships. This gives you some breathing space to review the broader aspects of your life and to consider your overall direction. Good job prospects around the 10th/15th with a minor cash boost on the 27th.

If you’re looking for sunshine and bright lights you might have to settle for something a little less dramatic, but this gives you time to work out why you are no longer certain about which direction to take in 2020. There is guidance and good advice from within the family, but for it to be effective, you do need to listen to what’s being said to you – even if you don’t agree with all of it.

NOV DEC
There may be a few major issues demanding your attention but this is not the time to try and deal with them all at once – a ‘one step at a time’ approach is more advantageous. And be cautious when it comes to making compromises. Other people need to meet you halfway, so give them some space to realise this for themselves.

22ND DEC - 19TH JAN
Things might not be absolutely perfect on the work scene, but they could be a darned sight worse – so keep your head down and slog away as best you can. If a partner is being critical of your work ethic, do remember that they’ve got your best interests at heart. If you’re ‘management’, you need to communicate more; and if you’re one of the ‘workers’ you must demand clarity.
SEPT - 22ND OCT
Quite an eventful and exciting month in affairs of the heart, and if you’re looking for evidence of someone’s commitment and affection the signs should be clear to see. On a deeper level, however, it’s your own levels of commitment that may become something of an issue, and if not in your own eyes, then certainly in those of a lover or partner.

JOIN THE CLUB MIC DROP
It’s no secret that York is pretty big on the music scene, and boasts a hefty share of musical talent. In fact, we reckon you – yes you – might be harbouring some musical skills of your own. Among the many hotspots in York where you can enjoy regular live music, are a healthy handful of open mic nights – where YOU take to the stage! Whether you play guitar, write poetry, tell jokes, sing, or something else; this is your chance to express yourself and share your love with an audience. Plus, you can watch everyone else’s performances and be part of a supportive crowd. Maybe you don’t fancy performing but want to check out the local talent? Maybe you were a dab hand at school, or you still own a set of watercolours – or perhaps you’ve never tried it, but always fancied yourself as a bit of a Van Gogh. Just without cutting the cutting-your-ear-off bit. Phil Reynolds hosts a variety of classes, workshops, one-to-ones and even residential weekends from his studio in Fulford. Budding artists can participate in anything from life drawing to six-week block sessions covering a variety of media. There are even drop-in classes specialising specifically in drawing; and bi-annual residential weekends in locations such as the Dales and Staithes. •If you’d like to try putting pen, pencil, paintbrush or something else to paper, then visit www.philreynoldsfineart.co.uk for more information.

TimeTravel Love history? So do we. Our Time Travel experts have got the lowdown on some of York’s most notorious people and places. For this month’s Time Travel we’re going way back to the year 1556, when Thomas and Jane Middleton gave birth to a baby girl that we know today as Margaret Clitherow. Margaret’s story is of religion, self-sacrifice and bravery, and is a truly harrowing tale to have once befallen on our beloved city of York. After marrying her wealthy and prosperous butcher husband John Clitherow, Margaret made a drastic decision to convert to Catholicism in the year 1574. In our current world, this would be no big deal. Today, we’re fortunate enough to be part of a country that’s supportive, open, and accepting of all different kinds of religions, beliefs and preferences. But poor Margaret lived in the 1500s, and this was a time where the Jesuits, etc. Act of 1584 was active. This Act forced all Roman Catholic priests out of the country within 40 days, or they’d be punished for high treason – unless they swore an oath to obey the Queen within those 40 days. Anyone who knew of their presence, and didn’t let the authorities know, would be fined, imprisoned, or even executed. This is where Margaret Clitherow’s
legendary tale began. She defied the law and risked her life by hiding priests in two chambers – one in the Shambles where she lived, and one in a property that she rented further away. Mass continued to be celebrated, and some of her priests were killed for their beliefs. And get this. Goodie Two-Shoes Clitherow over here prayed for the same thing to happen to her. Sources suggest that she actually went on pilgrimages praying to one day become a martyr. It wasn’t exactly The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to begin with, but the happy ending to Margaret Clitherow’s story was somewhat delayed. Like all good secrets, the truth always surfaces. Margaret’s chambers were eventually discovered when a scared young boy gave away the location during a raid in 1586. Margaret faced her trial at the beautiful Guildhall. And while we’re not entirely sure why – although it seemed she was trying to stop her children and servants from having to testify – Margaret refused trial by jury and thus headed straight for execution. And not just any execution. She was sentenced to be

pressed to death – but this threat didn’t persuade Margaret to change her ways. Protestants visited her, asking her to confess that she was pregnant, but she continued on with her punishment. On the 25th March 1586, Margaret’s punishment came to be, as she was pressed under 7-8 hundredweight. She was said to have arrived at her execution with a smile and an air of calmness, knowing that she was dying for her Catholic faith. Some even believed Margaret may have been mad, given her remarkable ability to accept the situation with such positivity. Her last words were said to have been: “Jesu! Have mercy on me!” And Margaret continued to pass on her thoughts and wishes after her death, through the gifts she handed over to her husband and daughter. Husband John received Margaret’s hat, which acknowledged his authority; and daughter Anne was given her stockings and shoes – a metaphor said to encourage Anne to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Margaret’s story continued long after her death. Despite being buried secretly in waste, in the hope that she’d never be
found, a group of Catholics found her, embalmed her, and gave her the burial she deserved. But secrecy seemed to be a common theme for Mrs Clitherow, as her eventual burial place was so carefully guarded that no one is now said to know where she lays. That being said, a relic, thought to be Margaret’s hand, resides at The Bar Convent on Blossom Street. Now, we promised you a happy ending. For Catholicism everywhere,

Documentation was minimal. We know there’s a lot of conflicting information about the facts surrounding Margaret Clitherow, so we’ve kept our story quite simple. Are you a keen historian? Do you know some facts that we’ve missed? Get in touch at the address on page 8, or email us at info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Or join the discussion online at www. yourlocallink.co.uk.
Margaret’s death was not in vain. She was beatified, meaning her entrance to Heaven was recognised for others to pray to, by Pope Pias XI in 1929. She was then canonised, or declared a saint, in 1970 by Pope Paul VI as one of the Four Martyrs of England and Wales. St Margaret’s Shrine, said to be situated opposite her house, resides at 35-36 Shambles. Schools all over the country, including Manchester, London and Middlesbrough, are named after Margaret Clitherow; and her name even spread to Ohio, USA at the St Margaret of York Catholic Church. So here’s your happy ending: Remember how we said that Margaret would set off on pilgrimages to pray that she would one day become a martyr? Well Margaret, your prayers were answered. Now, we do have to state that the 1500s were a long time ago. There was no internet.

BOSTON SPA, THE RIVER WHARFE AND AROUND
This walk of about seven miles circles the large and very salubrious village of Boston Spa. Starting in its main street it drops to the river Wharfe, following it downstream and passing the converted spa buildings. Heading into the countryside it goes under an old railway viaduct to follow the line of an old Roman road (Rudgate) into farmland. A pleasant trundle across fields leads to the village of Clifford with its grand Catholic church. Saving the best to last, the final stretch returns to the river. Climbing over tree hung Jackdaw Crag the route comes to the impressive weir before finishing in the village’s main street with its fine magnesian limestone buildings. Care should be taken where the path runs close to the river especially near Jackdaw Crag and the weir. If the river is high some sections of the riverside may be impassable. Apart from this, except for the track at Point 3 in the Directions, the route is relatively free of serious mud and water.
Directions
1 Start on Boston Spa High Street at the junction with Bridge Road near the prominent former hotel building now housing a Costcutter supermarket (if travelling by bus, alight just beyond Costcutter and turn back in the direction of travel to the junction). Go down Bridge Road and take the signed path to the right leading to the river. Continue ahead following the river downstream with houses up above to the right soon passing the old spa bath buildings. Follow the river to a kissing gate into a field. 2 Continue, crossing a bridge over a tributary beck, then coming to another kissing gate with a wooded bank to the right. Climb steps and at the top, with the river down to the left, proceed on a narrow fenced path to another gate. Pass under the arch of the disused railway and keep by the river in the field beyond eventually coming to stile.
Makers of the deal

Distance:
3 Climb and turn right (do not go over the stile opposite) going into the trees (if the way here is flooded do not cross the first stile but go along the field boundary until a collapsed fence gives access to the path beyond the flooded area). Continue on the tree fringed narrow path which widens into a track (numerous puddles here after wet weather). After about 800 metres the track reaches a main road. 4 Cross the road and go up the minor road opposite. In about 300 metres at a crossroads turn right down Watson’s Lane. Where the lane splits keep ahead between properties to climb steps over a short wall. Go ahead on a grass path to a kissing gate then keep alongside the stream to a wooden stile. Over this turn right up a track but in 20 metres turn left alongside a wooden fence. Follow the path as it swings right and left along the field boundary and, as signed, into bushes to another kissing gate.
Getting there By car Boston Spa is about 15 miles from York via Tadcaster using the A64 and the A659. Access by public transport from York is tricky. One option is to take the frequent Coastliner buses to Tadcaster to connect with the infrequent 77 bus that runs through Boston Spa. An alternative is to travel on bus 412, which runs roughly every two hours, to Wetherby and then take bus 7 departing Wetherby every 30 minutes. If driving park considerately on the roadside in Boston Spa as the public car park is limited to two hour stays.
Refreshments There’s a good selection of bars and cafés in Boston Spa’s main street. In the field beyond keep right to the corner but ignore the gate and turn left down the hedge to a gate by a footpath sign. Go through this and follow the wooden fence on the right to another gate.
5 Turn right here on track but in ten metres turn left on another track with a hedge to the left. Follow the track as it bends left through a barrier but ten metres beyond this turn right on a path between fields. Keep ahead as the path becomes hedged and fenced swinging slightly left then widening to a track with gardens on the right before reaching a road. Turn right here following the road as it bends left and right passing a ‘Welcome to Clifford’ sign. Continue ahead as road narrows to T junction.
7 Cross straight over the main road to go down Leys Lane. Follow the hedged tarmac lane but at a no through road sign turn right, still on tarmac down to a dip. Take the bridleway signed ‘Deepdale’ down a small valley with
8 You now continue on a path high above the river to the left (take care, steep drop in places) soon with houses, including a large new development set back from the path, away to the right. Eventually, with the weir prominent to the left, the path drops down to a junction with a bridleway on the right (the weir can be approached by paths to the left). Go up the bridleway (Holgate Lane) in the gully to emerge by the church at the main road (High Street) where you turn left back to the starting point.

a stream on the right. Approaching the river, cross the footbridge over the stream and go steeply uphill. Keep on up steps ignoring a path to the right.

6 Turn left passing the Catholic Church and then ignore the road signed ‘Boston Spa’. Where the road bends left at War Memorial turn right onto Willow Lane. You now continue on this lane which becomes Clifford Moor Road for nearly a mile leaving Clifford, passing a school and entering the outskirts of Boston Spa to reach a crossroads with the main road.

YORK LIFE
Local February. The so-called month of love – if you call a lastminute.com rush to Clintons proof of love. I mean, nothing is more romantic than that 29p sticker on the back of a piece of card. And before my wife reads this (pretty sure that novelty wore off in 2010), I don’t need one particular day to tell her how great she is. Onto more pressing matters and I think the only thing York City supporters would love in Feb is a storming run back to the top of the Conference North League Table. To be honest, depending on how the team did at Kings Lynn Town in mid-January (this column written prior to that crunch game), they may have achieved that. But if not, they may even just settle for a date to say goodbye to long-time love, Bootham Crescent, after recent confusion over the official moving date. So who knows – perhaps February will see the last ever game at York City’s spiritual home. On one hand I will be gutted to see that eventual farewell fixture; a place that holds so many fantastic memories (a few stinkers over the years too). But then again, my nostalgic memories of the place can be somewhat diminished when holding shut a toilet door at half-time as the latch broke in the late 90s, or the fact that we must be the only club in the land whose corporate boxes face the car park instead of the pitch. In recent times you could argue that’s been a blessing. The
move itself is certainly something that splits supporters, but giving it a decent send off is one that people are keen to be united on. Hoping for ex-players – legends – to be an integral part of the send-off. But, at the time of writing, the only thing suggested has been music and face painting. Over Christmas I went to Bradford Park Avenue – a team who had won just 12 points all season. Part of me thought ‘they can’t be that bad’, but when two players genuinely looked like they couldn’t kick it in a straight line I don’t think Steve Watson could have ever felt threatened. Well, not as much as my two friends and I did trying to find an open public house on Boxing Day. We eventually found one, but realised two steps into the establishment that it was one of those ‘you-only-go-in-if-you-know-somebody’ sort of pubs. Fortunately, I think even the regulars must have thought it was shut over Christmas as we managed to drink our pints quicker than Usain Bolt jogs 100m before getting out of there. Steve Watson will be hoping the Minstermen have a run similar to the start of the season as the campaign hits a significant period. Had to laugh when he said he wants to loan out reserve Goalkeeper Ryan Whitley to ensure he doesn’t stagnate on the bench, but when asked if an Academy keeper would then be promoted to the bench he said defender Joe Tait has offered to don the
gloves if first choice Peter Jaimeson got injured. Onto boxing now and after mentioning the city’s leading lights, Cam Shaw, Michael Fafera and George Davey, all seem to have made early inroads to making 2020 as successful as 2019. Shaw fights back at the Magna Centre in Rotherham on 7th March, the day after Fafera boxes at Elland Road Pavillion Suite, whilst Davey is believed to be close to announcing his next opponent. Dinner Date for Daniel A tribute dinner will be held to celebrate the professional football career of former York City centre-back Daniel Parslow. Already in the top ten of alltime appearance-makers for the club, Daniel was also a fan favourite – but had to retire due to a head injury. Daniel’s fundraising committee have now announced a tribute dinner to be held at York Racecourse on the evening of Thursday 26th March 2020. Many of Daniel’s former playing colleagues are expected to attend and recount stories about playing with him, and of course, the incredible ‘Wembley twice in one week’ in 2012. The main sponsor for the dinner will be He Loves and She Loves, and every guest will receive a complimentary 12-month membership as a gift, worth £39. This will entitle guests to a He Loves or She Loves York Card, which unlocks

huge savings in a wide range of local stores, restaurants and a long list of York businesses. The ticket price also includes a welcome drink, three course meal and a chance to re-live some amazing memories, including archive footage to be shown on the night. Tickets are priced at £50 each and can be purchased directly from the organisers. For details, or ticket queries, please email parslowdinner@gmail.com. The dinner is one of a series of events during Daniel’s Benefit Year. Daniel is extremely grateful to the Brain Injury charity ‘Headway’, who have been extremely supportive since Daniel’s career-ending injury. He will be making a donation to Headway from the proceeds of his benefit year in recognition of the fantastic work they do to help anyone who has experienced a brain injury.

MOTORING NEWS GADGET GUIDE PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT For many of us, driving a car is something we take for granted. But some of you may be about to take your theory test – or you might know someone who is. And it’s daunting! With a requirement of 43 out of 50 correct answers in the multiple choice part of the test, there’s little room for error – so revising is imperative. So if you’re after something a bit different, local publishing company Global Games International Ltd has created theory test card game, Full Licence: Pass the Test. The box contains 55 colourful cards full of questions, manoeuvres and road signs; which are a great way to explore your existing knowledge, or challenge someone you know who’s about to sit their test. This month, our Mogul’s got three top tips for start-ups. 1. Track your technique. There are plenty of different ways to advertise and market yourself and your products or services. And a lot of the time, it’s a case of good old trial and error. But don’t waste your time and money – make sure you record the data before, during and after each marketing venture so
you know whether it worked – or didn’t work – and why. 2. Variety is the spice of life. Don’t stick to one or two methods of marketing. Sure, have a strong social media presence – but don’t underestimate your potential print audience. Advertising in the local newspaper? Great, but will the Gen X residents read it? 3. Start early. While it may seem like ‘tempting fate’ to start marketing your business before your product or service is officially ready, it’s sensible to bring it to your audience’s attention as soon as possible. Wait until you’re ready and you’ll waste time building traction. Get it in the public eye early and your timing will be immaculate.
If you’d like some more top marketing tips and tricks then get in touch with us at info@yourlocallink.co.uk, or give us a call on 01904 767881.
TIME TO CLEAR THINGS UP... What does financial planning actually mean? Finding the best life assurance plan? Creating complex tax planning solutions? Passing wealth on to future generations? Avoiding unforeseen catastrophes? It all sounds a bit overwhelming to say the least.
BUSINESS
ASK THE EXPERT...
Julie Wilson, straight-talking Yorkshire financial planner
There are a lot of misconceptions around what financial advisers actually do, and we don’t want you missing out on saving a load of money just because you don’t know exactly what financial planners can do for you. •You think you can do your own financial planning? Okay, there are a few things that you should try doing yourself, like making a pizza or putting up a shelf. But doing your own financial planning? Maybe not. You’re likely to get lower returns, suffer higher taxes and miss out on opportunities. Financial planners are qualified to make sure you get the most from your money. •You think all financial planners are the same? Financial advisers can be independent or tied to a company. Consumer champion “Which?” has conducted research that showed you’re likely to get more comprehensive advice from an independent financial planner or a financial planner of chartered status, as they have to comply with very high standards of ethics and client care. •You think all financial advisers can advise on all areas of finance? While a financial adviser will have a general understanding of most financial areas, financial planning is a complex subject. Look for specialists in the area that you are seeking advice in. •You think the cheapest financial adviser is the best value? People don’t buy things because they are the cheapest. Otherwise no one would have Rolls Royces. •You think all financial planners are qualified to the same level? From 2013, all financial advisers must be qualified to the “diploma level”. Many of our financial planners have gone beyond this minimum requirement, with four of our advisers being “Chartered”- the gold standard in financial planning. If you’re still questioning whether you need a financial planner, we’ve got some reasons why: •You don’t have the knowledge or time to look after your own affairs but you still want to make the most of your money •You have a substantial sum to invest •You want to give money to someone without giving too much to the tax man •You are planning retirement and want to make the most of it •You want to transfer a pension from one scheme to another •You want to transfer your final salary to a personal pension arrangement •You want your money to last as long as you do •You want to draw money from your pension tax efficiently •You’re concerned about inheritance tax •You want to get and maintain the lifestyle you choose – no matter what happens. Do you fit this criteria? It might be worth having a chat with one of our straight-talking financial planners. If you want to learn more about why you need a financial adviser, simply request our guide by calling 01904 819788 or visiting www.financialadviceguide.co.uk 3 Tudor Court, Opus Avenue, York Business Park, York, YO26 6RS Tel: 01904 819788 Fax: 01904 466206 Email: office@pen-life.co.uk www.pen-life.co.uk Statement: Registered in England No: 2390548. Who should you trust to get the best price for yourC house when you come to sell? This month, I thought I’d share with you some thoughts on how to ensure you choose the right agent when you decide to sell your house. Almost all agencies use marketing materials which read something like this, ‘We’ll get you the best price for your home’. But how do you work out who can really deliver on that promise?

Well firstly, look for feedback from recent customers for that CO agency. One of the best places you can check out reviews is at the UK’s best independent review platform, Trustpilot.com. Another way is to have a look at their social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter and see what existing customers have to say. But how do you know who will get you the best price?
Email: apdesignseervices@btinternet.com
The average price achieved by UK estate agents is 97.2% of the asking price, so can your chosen estate agent live up to this? So here’s the summary: 1. Can your choice of agent PROVE that they are the best as referenced by previous customer feedback. 2. Can they PROVE that they’ll get you the best price, or do they just say so? It’s not always an easy decision to make, but there are definitely things you can do to help you decide. The UK’s No.1 Agent Since July 2015
Managed by Jonathan and Elly, and their team of local property experts, EweMove York delivers exceptional service, first class marketing and proven results to clients who value a personal, tailored approach.

LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD
Put a SPRING in your step
BE AWARE: COMPARE
I was amazed again this month by the cavalier way that utility companies dole out overinflated pricing to anyone that hasn’t renegotiated at the end of a contract period. Being a Yorkshireman, I like to try and find value for money in all things I buy. And my personal buying habits are, I think, aligned closely with my customers’ – quality brands at the best prices, products with pedigree or flair (or both), and a great overall ownership experience. Utility companies, in my experience, seem to come at the problem from a rather different angle. The aim of the game is not to garner any sort of brand loyalty at all – in fact, there appears to be a very active mechanism to penalise anyone that doesn’t change suppliers regularly! With my “consumer advice” hat on, I would advise anyone that has not had a look at the wider electric and gas market in the last year to check what’s available via an online comparison website. The chances are that if your contract has come to an end with your supplier they will have put you on their “variable” rate. It might be variable by name but invariably it’s more expensive, and really only benefits the
supplier. While you’re there it’d also be worth checking your telephone and broadband deals, as there are potentially hundreds of pounds to be saved each year.
February might be a dreary month, but with spring just around the corner there’s plenty of prep to be done in the garden. We spoke to local gardener Spencer Ellis who shared some dos and don’ts of February gardening. Stay off the lawn! “If the ground is waterlogged, frozen or has snow on it - avoid walking there. Some people still have a little wander round, but you could be walking on soil where bulbs are, and foot steps compacting snow on the grass can lead to dead patches.
I suppose in the utilities market it’s hard to differentiate yourself and add any real value to the supply chain, but I’d be very happy to stick with any supplier who proactively made sure they weren’t overpriced for what they were selling me. We check prices every day for the products we sell because I don’t think we’d sell anything if we were overpriced compared to our national competitors. I have no idea why the utility companies can’t do the same.
Trim your wisteria “I often hear complaints about people’s wisteria not flowering. Wisterias need pruning twice – once in August and once again in January/February. Shorten the new growths back to two or three buds. The pruning will help to encourage flowering.”
A very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to you all – and please don’t forget our Herbert Todd Kitchens Open Day on Saturday 8th February at our Monks Cross store, where we officially launch our new kitchen range. There will be free professionally cooked food for all (between 10am and 3pm) and the first 10 Your Local Link customers who ask will also get a free AEG goodie bag!
Prep your patios “What happenS throughout winter is that you get a build up of algae and moss on your paths, walkways, furniture and walls. If there’s only a light infestation, we can spray it with an algaecide and then let the spring rain wash your paths, stonework and fences clean. Heavy duty jobs will need a power wash and sweep, too.”
Tend your shrubs “If the weather is favourable, what you can do now is plant shrubs. Bare rooted shrubs (which are dug up in dormant season for planting) tend to be half the price of a potted shrub. They’re ideal for planting towards the end of February, beginning of March, when the ground should be warming up.”
If you could do with some help in the garden, call Spencer Ellis Gardening on 07931 245985 for a free no obligation quote.

WINTER GARDENS Dependant on the weather, much can be achieved in the garden this month – and if mild spells persist, now is a good time to prepare for spring sowing and planting. However, if the weather turns and we find ourselves in the grip of an Arctic winter some jobs may be restricted.
CAN YOU DIG IT? If the soil is still workable, now is a good time to dig borders and prepare seed beds for the spring, by turning over the soil to improve aeration and drainage. Covering the soil with clear polythene or cloches is an ideal way to warm the soil before sowing, and if soil conditions are poor try adding some gravel or grit to improve the drainage – giving your plants the best benefits for growth. February is also the best time to buy in your plug plants and summer flowering bulbs for a great show of colour later in the season. Bulbs and tubers such as Gladioli and Dahlias can be started off in pots, as long as they are in a frost-free place such as a greenhouse or cold frame. Sweet peas can be sown and placed in a cold frame – those sown late autumn can be potted on.
DON’T LET THE BUGS BITE If you’re planning on growing anything in the greenhouse for the new season, make sure your greenhouse is free from any signs of pests and diseases such as white fly or red spider mite, which may be on plants that have been over-wintered. If this is the
case then throw them out and start afresh. Sterilising your greenhouse is an ideal way to start, by cleaning the glazing and framework along with any old pots or seed trays that can be re-used later in the spring. Towards the back end of the month, the main job for the garden is pruning. Cut back any perennials and ornamental grasses to encourage new growth later on, along with summer flowering deciduous shrubs such as Buddleia. Deadheading winter bedding and removing old leaves is also beneficial and makes the garden look tidier. If the weather conditions do remain favourable continue to plant shrubs, trees, deciduous hedging and roses. If the ground is not frozen and workable, you can also move any shrubs that you may have in your garden that are either in the wrong place or have grown too big for the area they are in. Don’t forget to prepare the new site by adding some compost and bonemeal to help aid root development and water in well, firming in the
soil around the shrub. Also, remember to feed the birds and make sure they have a constant supply of fresh water when the weather is cold. If you do find yourself confined indoors and unable to work in the garden why not check your gardening equipment and give them a good clean and maintenance. Why not oil and sharpen secateurs, clean spades and forks, and tidy away any debris littering your sheds. It may also be a good time to service the lawnmower. So with all this in mind, try to mind the cold weather – wrap up warm and get out into the garden, make a difference, and look forward to the season ahead.

EXPERT
Tony Chalcraft As a child I was lucky enough to eat lots of peppery watercress. My family didn’t really ‘do’ salad other than a few leaves of limp lettuce and slices of de-pipped tomatoes, so watercress was almost exotica. The reason we ate it, usually as a sandwich between two
pieces of chewy white bread, was that it was grown locally. Not far away was a watercress farm. By running spring-fed water from the local bourne (stream) through concrete, growing ‘beds’ watercress could be produced almost all year round. You can, of course, buy watercress fairly readily. You can also try and grow it but, and I speak from experience, this isn’t easy. I’ve never grown a decent crop. The problem, as the name implies, is that it needs water – lots of it – ideally flowing. There is, however, a salad plant very similar to watercress that doesn’t need water to grow. This is land cress (Barbarea verna), sometimes also called American cress. I now use this as a watercress ‘substitute’.
Although in taste and texture it might be considered a little more rugged than the finest watercress, it has advantages when it comes to cultivation. One of these, other than being quite happy to grow without water, is hardiness. Land cress is one of the few salad plants able to survive and crop outside through the winter. In fact, land cress is best grown for winter use only. Sown when the weather is warm and the days long it tends, like many other leafy salads such as rocket, to bolt (prematurely run to seed) rather than produce leaves. Because of this I sow, either directly outside or in modules for later planting out, in late July or early August. This gives just enough time for the plants to produce picking-sized leaves from October. Depending on the weather, further pickings can then be had through the winter, especially from early February when lengthening days induce renewed growth. It’s only in spring, usually midApril, that land cress runs out of steam. Once yellow flower heads appear, quality leaf production ends. At this point, unless you want a rash of self-
sown seedlings, plants are best dug up and consigned to the compost heap. Cultivation-wise there are several other pluses for land cress. Few diseases or pests trouble it. Apart from occasional fungal blemishes from spring and wood pigeons that strip the plants in frosty weather, I’ve never had any problems. Although easy to grow in the open it can be cultivated under cover. It will also thrive in pots or containers providing these have some depth. There’s also much to recommend land cress when it comes to the eating. Like its watery cousin it contains enough vitamins and minerals, especially iron and calcium, to qualify as a superfood. While at its most nutritious if eaten raw, it also makes a very tasty soup and can be cooked and used in quiches, tarts, etc. It always surprises me that land cress isn’t more widely cultivated. I’ll be enjoying it for several more months. You could be eating it next winter too. Packets of seeds are readily available online. They’ll cost you considerably less than a single bundle of watercress bought in the supermarket.

Got a gardening question?
Ask CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES
If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk or call Chris on 766266. Q. I have some dogwood plants in my garden. Could you give me some advice of when I should prune them please? Many deciduous shrubs are grown mainly for their coloured stems, but when left to get larger they can produce beautiful flowers, fruit and different coloured foliage. To achieve this, allow them to develop unpruned. Restrict the spread if necessary, by cutting out one in four old shoots each year. This will also encourage new growth from the base. Neglected plants can be renovated by cutting out old wood at the centre of the bush. When cultivars are grown for their stem effect, allow the bush to grow unpruned in the first year after planting. Then cut all stems back to 5cm (2”) from the ground. In subsequent years, cut all stems back to two of the previous year’s growth. Here are some examples of dogwood: CORNUS ALBA SIBIRICA. This dogwood is one of the best in cultivation for its red stems. CORNUS SANGUENEA ‘WINTER BEAUTY’. This dogwood produces fiery

orangeyellow stems at the base, shading to pink and red at the tips,. Its leaves turn goldenyellow in autumn.
DRYOPTERIS ERYTHROSORA. One of the most colourful of hardy ferns. In spring and summer its coppery red fronds contrast with the shiny dark green winter fronds. DRYOPTERIS WALLICHIANA. The erect fronds of this lovely fern form a big, semi-evergreen shuttlecock with dark scaly stalks. Its fronds grow taller when rich soil and shelter are provided.
CORNUS STOLONIFERA ‘FLAVIRAMEA’. The greenish yellow winter shoots of this dogwood are brighter in the winter sun, if regularly pruned. CORNUS ALBA ‘KESSELRINGI’. Produces dark purple stems late into winter. Q. Can you recommend some ferns for a damp shady site in a garden? Of all the non-flowering perennials, ferns are easily the most garden-worthy, offering an exciting variety of shapes
Chris Brown
and heights for use as specimen plants or in bold groupings. Most of the following ferns are of medium to large size and will thrive given humus (rich soil), moisture and shade. ASLENIUM SCHOLOPENDRIUM. This bold fern is easily recognised by its long leathery, evergreen fronds, marked beneath with stripes of brown spores. ANTHURIUM ‘RED BEAUTY’. You’ll find finely divided, herbaceous leaves on this fern, that are thin and metal grey with purpled red veins. ASLPENIUM ADIANTUM-NIGREM.
OSMUNDA REGALIS ROYAL FERN. An impressive fern forming a bold clump of multiple fronds that often colour richly in autumn before dying back. It produces spikes of red-brown spores in summer. POLYSTICHUM POLYBLEPHARUM. The distinctive shuttlecock of pricklettoothed, much divided fronds is covered at first with golden hairs. It’s particularly effective when planted with other ferns. Planting any fern in damp shaded areas will brighten any garden. These plants always shine. Chris x

Moorlands Nature Reserve is home to fairy toadstools, tree carvings and a beautiful big pond. That’s why we’re going to find four tips and tricks to help make life a little easier, with a different theme, every month. For February we’ve gathered some of the best parenting hacks to help you in sticky situations.
Applying sticky tape over the speakers of your child’s toys to make them quieter. Some toys have different volume levels. But some don’t. And those that don’t can absolutely drive. You. Mad. Pop some tape over the top and muffle that music.
Stick a plastic hook onto the back of your baby’s high chair to hang up their bibs. You know the ones – the little wall hooks that you stick up to hang picture frames on. Well, they make perfect bib hooks too. Ideal for easy mealtime access.
Cut a sticker in half and put one half in each shoe – so your little one learns which one is which. Learning the difference between left and right isn’t easy – and many adults still look at their hands for a clue (psst… your left hand makes an L shape). So this clever hack will help your child understand which way around they’re supposed to go.
Wrap sticky tape around your hand to pick up bits of glitter and sequins, etc. We’ve all done the tape-around-the-hand trick to help de-lint ourselves when covered in fluff – but did you know this trick works just as well when trying to pick up your little one’s sparkles?

Set sail!
Competition to find potential young sailors from the North of England Ocean Youth Trust North is appealing for schools, colleges and youth work agencies in the North of England to nominate deserving young people, aged 12-19, to win a place on a North Sea Adventure Challenge. No previous sailing experience is required and all equipment will be provided. Steve Lennon, Managing Director, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for young people to experience Adventure Under Sail. If you know someone who loves adventure and deserves to have a fantastic time then please nominate them to join our crews this summer.” OYT North takes young people away from their everyday routine and inspires them to make positive changes to their lives. Over 500 young people
each year come on the sail training yacht, James Cook, including schools, colleges, youth groups, groups with special educational needs, visual and hearing impairment and young carers. To nominate a young person send an email to office@oytnorth.org.uk stating in 200 words or less why they deserve a place, before 31st March 2020. **Nominations must come from a school, college, community or youth work organisation. Individuals are welcome to book a voyage directly with OYT North.

HAVE A HOME? THESE CUTIE PIES NEED ONE. JADE Meet Jade: a lovely little lady who enjoys running around and having fun. She’s not too keen on being left alone for long periods of time, so she’ll need someone active who’ll be able to spend plenty of time with her. Jade loves to learn new things, and will make a brilliant companion for her new family. Could that be you?
GOVERNOR Poor Governor needs a foster home as soon as possible, as living in the Centre is making him very depressed. He currently needs an adult-only and pet-free home to help improve his mental state and physical condition; as vets have done many checks that have resulted in full health. He’s a friendly, loveable dog with a heart of gold, and just needs someone to let him in and love him back.
Visit www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk or call 654949 SID Sid’s feeling rather sorry for himself, so he might be hiding when you come and visit him. After being abandoned by his owner someone took him in – but then they had to move and so poor Sid’s ended up in the Centre. Can you offer this gentle giant the love and reassurance that he needs?
NATHAN This lovely eight-year-old gentleman is rather shy, and doesn’t like being in the cattery environment. He’s desperate to be back in a quiet, loving home with plenty of TLC – is there someone out there who can offer him this?

A-OCAY! Since 2002, the Older Citizens Advocacy York (OCAY) charity has been working tirelessly to give people over the age of 50 the chance to be heard. It provides a free and independent advocacy service so that older people are able to share their views on subjects that affect them; and gives them a voice to discuss issues that may be of concern. However, fantastic services and charities such as OCAY can’t continue without the wonderful help and support of their volunteers – and OCAY will be looking for new recruits at its
volunteering open day on Thursday 6th February. If you’ve ever considered volunteering, and would like to help to support older people, then why not pop into the Priory Street Centre between 1.30-3pm and find out what roles are available? Refreshments will be available and you’ll be able to have a good chinwag with the team. To find out more, call 01904 676200.

HEALTH & BEAUTY FOR YOU
Returning to Exercise Our new sport and exercise expert Dr Dane Vishnubala is talking about knowing your body when exercising – and ways to try and prevent injury. 2. What you can do and what should you do… The conundrum Remember: if you haven’t exercised in a while its likely your muscles, tendons and bones may not be able to cope – and this can lead to inflammation and overuse injuries, or excessive soreness. While some DOMs (Delayed Onset of Muscle soreness) is okay, excessive soreness generally has more risks than benefits. If it’s been a long time, start slow, aim to do 50-60% of what you think you’re truly capable of doing, and work from there. The aim should be building habits and techniques. Consistency is half the battle!
We should all take good care of our physical and mental health – and returning to, or starting exercise is a fantastic way to do this. However, with exercise can sometimes come injuries! Doing as much as you can isn’t always the right thing – reducing the risk of injury by managing what you do, and how quickly you increase it, is as much an art as it is a science. Here are my key tips to reducing your injury risk:
1. The warm up is important! The warm up helps to increase muscle temperature; lubricate joints and move them through their full range of movement, which is different to stretching! In a gym setting, the cross trainer or rower are ideal ways to warm up. Aim to progress your warm up over 5-10min, start easy, and finish not far off your workout speed or difficulty.
3. Know your starting point? Progress slowly
Once you know what you can do then how do you progress? Ideally your total work from one week to the next shouldn’t rise by more than 5-10%. Simply put: if you’re a runner, then whatever your total mileage is for the week you ideally wouldn’t increase in the following week by more than 5-10%. The greater the increase, the greater the potential risk for injury.
We Are Ramsay Our resolution is Our expert consultants are committed to offering excellent care as soon as you need it; that’s why they dedicate time to offer complimentary advice, with no obligation, so you can be sure before making a decision.

EXPERT
you
Dr Dane Vishnubala 4. Don’t underestimate variety. Overly repetitive tasks can strain tendons and cause overuse issues. Having variety in your workouts, where possible, to reduce repetition, can be helpful. Varying your programme of exercise can be really good at working different components of fitness, from cardiovascular (heart and lungs) to strength and balance.
5.Stuck in a ‘gainz’ rut? Consider periodisation.
Many coaches give their athletes 6-12 week programme blocks and then change their focus for the next block. We call this approach ‘periodisation’, and there are many ways to do it. However good your programme of exercise is, doing the same thing with progressions will only get you so far. YSM offers return-to-fitness clinics, sports massage, physiotherapy appointments and much more. Unwanted body hair is a common plight for many of us. Decades have been spent trying to find a solution that isn’t painful (waxing), time consuming (threading), or rash-inducing (shaving). And when laser hair removal came along, it was painful too. The good news is that laser technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the past five years. Saima from Bonita Laser Salon on Clifton Moor uses a particularly sophisticated machine on her clients - the All White Laser 3 (AW3), which is said to be totally pain and discomfort free. We were dying to find out just how good it was, so we sent Tina from Your Local Link to try it… Here’s what she learnt: It’s not painful anymore! Tina said: “It felt just like having an ice cube rolled over my face. There was no pain, and it actually felt quite relaxing.” That’s all thanks to the advanced Crystal Freeze™ innovation to numb the treatment area. You can get on with your day Saima explained that there’s no downtime from having laser hair removal and there’s rarely even redness after treatment, although she does recommend avoiding makeup on the area you’ve had treated for 24 hours.
Repetition, repetition, repetition! Yes, you will see immediate results, but the hair growth cycle has four phases and you will need multiple sessions for the laser hair removal to be fully permanent. Saima is keen to make sure that her customers know how many sessions they will need.

York’s known for many things: Guy Fawkes… Dame Judi Dench… Purpleman. But arguably the most famous thing about York is our association with the Vikings. The city was renamed Jorvik following the Viking invasion on 1st November 866 AD, and continued to be ruled by the Vikings for one hundred years. Today, you can discover the lives of the Vikings at the JORVIK Viking Centre – and this special festival takes that experience one step further. From costume competitions to the best beard competition; city tours to workshops; mead tasting to live music; and of course, the stunning Battle Spectacular in the Land of Darkness – you absolutely don’t want to miss out on this incredible festival from the 15th-23rd February. For more information, visit www.jorvikvikingfestival.co.uk.
If you enjoy exploring antiques and collectables, then this brand new ‘boutique-sized’ version of the popular York Racecourse Antique Home & Vintage Fair is for you. Held at the Pocklington Arts Centre on Saturday 8th February, you’ll be able to pick up all sorts of vintage antiques from around 100 specialist dealers. Events Manager Kim Edwards explains why a Saturday show was created: “The Sunday Racecourse fairs attract hundreds of visitors from across the region. We want to provide a new Saturday shopping experience that, whilst small on size, will provide all the choice and value associated with our fair in York.” For more information, visit www.antiquefairyork.com.
The stunning York Ice Trail is coming back for 2020.

A year of good food The culinary whizzes at The Cookery School at the Grand, York are celebrating a fruitful first year in business this month. Since they opened in February 2019, head chef Andrew Dixon and the team have taught enthusiastic foodies how to make modern British classics, bread, pastry, beef wellingtons, east Asian food and much more in their state-of-the-art MasterChef-inspired kitchen. Young would-be chefs haven’t missed out either, with parent and child classes from just £45 per pair. The Cookery School also does birthday parties and celebrations, can cater to all dietary requirements, and keeps all trainee chefs topped up with snacks throughout the cooking sessions. Everything you cook can be enjoyed onsite in the dining room (which is gorgeous), and there’s always

plenty of food left over to take home for the family, too. Your Local Link Editor, Krystal Starkey, has been before and loved it: “Andrew really knows his stuff (he’s owned a three rosette restaurant before his current teaching gig), and talked us through all of the reasons why we do what we do during cooking,” she says. “A lot of the rules he taught us in the class applied to far more than just dishes we were cooking on the day. I now know the role of acid in setting a posset, and that oil needs to be over 170 degrees to fry, otherwise food will absorb the fat - not cook in it. The whole day was more than just a cooking class, it was an experience, with lots of lovely surprises - including cream teas, wine and a canvas bag to take all of my recipes home in.”
If you would like to treat yourself or a loved one to an extraordinary cooking experience, visit www.thegrandyork. co.uk/cookery-school/ for more information.
